Andrew Bujalski, voice of our generation ?

I saw Mutual Appreciation and I thought the "naturalness" of the acting was good, the script was ok, but especially good in the parts where it revealed nuance of the characters speech and their predicaments. The cinematography was OK ( I cant believe it cost 50,000 to make), the shots themselves I found uninspiring, but in the same way that "talky films" usually don't focus that much on astounding visuals, so its to be expected. I thought some parts were really funny, others kinda boring, but overall and speaking generally I was satisfied.Trumps alot of American independent films out there right now.Haven't seen Funny Ha Ha, is it better or worse? The one thing I didnt expect was the rabid critical acclaim this movie gets, '"voice of our generation", comparisons to Cassavetes, Godard, like this guy is the second coming.Just because you shoot in 16mm black and white, live in Brooklyn, and have a somewhat intelligent script does not earn you comparisons to the masters.Yes he is good, no he is not the new Cassavettes or Godard. Discuss.

He's OK, and nothing more. Funny Ha Ha is a little better just cuz the lead actress is kind of amazing.

Thanks Morbius, I will check Funny Ha Ha.

oscar, Saturday, 24 March 2007 22:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought Funny Ha Ha was considerably worse. The story felt a lot more contrived, is all, whereas Mutual Appreciation left me a little breathless with its slice-of-lifeness.

And to be honest I think a lot of the acclaim is justified. I can't recall a work of art that so accurately captured the tone and tenor of the conversations (and even to some extent the relationships) of me and my peers.

well, that last point makes me glad of my middle age. My favorite actor in his films is Bujalski himself, as sort of a creep.

Funny Ha Ha is artlessly perfect. See it.

I saw Mutual Appreciation last night and am now a confirmed fan. I was on the fence after Funny Ha Ha (good but not great) but I thought this one was excellent. that makes a run of nicely assured American indie stuff I've seen recently - Puffy Chair and Old Joy also good.

Armond White asks, "has Hollywood’s philosophical decline succumbed to the artistic wasteland of mumblecore?" (in a review of The Nines)

No, Armond, Hollywood has descended to the artistic wasteland of "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry." I'll take Mumblecore over crap-core anyday.

i think he has an eye for that, no? i don't think he's an especially sympathetic character, whereas you were meant to love the guy in the black and white one and meant to feel sorry for bujalski in the first one.

The final seconds are superlatively freaky.

hate it when i accidentally read dorkish bits like this in a review, which will subsequently colour my watching the movie.

anyone seen yet?

Going into Computer Chess, I thought it was the least commercial thing I could possibly do, and then if you measure in terms of box office it's splitting hairs because you're not talking about big numbers in any case, but it did as well commercially as anything I've done. So, mostly we're talking just about sort of external elements. In the case of Results, first and foremost there are actors' names and faces on the poster that people recognize. There are semi-familiar romantic-comedy elements. But I really don't know. I think I always trick myself into thinking that everybody's going to walk along with us on this journey and understand what I'm trying to do, and then I read the reviews and I go, "Oh, yes, of course, I forgot." I forgot that at a certain point I kind of stopped looking at the playbook and did this other thing because I thought it would be fun. Not everyone wants to go off the path.

Better than Results, more confident about its milieu, although rather too crowded with incident.

Support the Girls kinda ran out of steam for me in the last half hour, but up until the point where Regina Hall leaves the film for a decent chunk of the third act, I was loving it (I wondered if the film either needed a stronger resolution, or if it should have just dispensed with the whole idea of resolution). Give Hall more lead roles!

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Monday, 10 June 2019 19:51 (four years ago) link

My wife's reaction iirc was that it should be required viewing for anybody in a management position.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 June 2019 20:12 (four years ago) link

Yeah the climactic sequence in the restaurant was the weakest part, but the film had garnered enough goodwill with me by that point that I can ride with it. (Also hugely not a fan of ending with the 'cathartic scream from rooftop or other scenic vantage point' thing, cant believe ppl are still doing that with a straight face, might as well end on a freezeframe of characters high fiving and yelling the title of the movie, but w/e, its a nitpick.) Hall deserved an Oscar nom.
