As the years go by I find more and more that the motto on the family coat-of-arms, "If you lived here, you'd be home by now", fails to reflect the full nuance and complexity of my ideals. Therefore I have resolved to adopt a personal motto. Preferably something muscular and memorable. Something with pith, verve and thrust. Something, in short, that is short.

I have been toying with a number of candidates:

"Though the pen be mighty, I carry a cosh."
"All for honor and duty-free."
"Pray there are pigs in heaven."
"Apes can climb, but snakes still look down on them."
"Where there is sleep, there is hope."

I am curious if any of you have personal or family mottos.

I loved the idea of the coat of arms where the lion is impaled on the unicorn's horn. But rather than Americanising it with Jerry Springer (who, lets face it, is already a distant memory (and thank gawd)), why not have a monkey with sword for a penis, flying out of the unicorn's bum, a snake swallowing the sword, and a cocker-spaniel humping the lion's leg. Just imagine the lovely colours we could work into this uplifting image. Do you think we need to work a goat into this scheme?
