Of course they're only as "skinny" as the sizing and proportions allow -- I am decidedly not thin and I love my size 10s or 12s in the short length. Also they are under $100 (around $70 retail) and often on sale for around $30.

I have been living in wide-legged jeans since about Januar but I really don't like flares or boot cut jeans. The wide-leg ones I have kind of look similar to the above only a little less tight in the thighs. I guess they're kind of like sailor pants. Maybe.

TIGHT. I buy jeans inappropriately tight as in TOTALLY stuffed into the legs, and wear them around the house a little. Every single time, I think "Wo, am I really still this size? Yowch!" and every time, within 4-5 wearings I need to wet them to shrink them back up.

Well, the Levis that I like are around 1-2% spandex (or whatever), depending on the color. So maybe that's part of the effect. But I still think you have to take advantage of the bias stretch of cotton twill and go for it.

revolve always has denim on sale, too, but it can be difficult to find anything above a 27w.

i'm kind of scared of revolve, after looking at a dress you posted i clicked through to summer tops, and they were all so expensive. i just can't bring myself to spend even $90 on a top, let alone $300, which was probably the average price. i'm not sure when/if i'll get over this, but i guess it's probably for the best, really...

the jeans that are on sale tend to be drastically discounted, though. i'd say it's worth a look, esp as you're pretty slim - you'll probably have more luck with the sizes than i do.

laurel are you quite tall? i find that skinny jeans just don't work on me at all because i have super short legs, big thighs AND big hips, so i just look dumpy in them.

erica you'd probably look super hot in skinnies, esp those ones posted at the top. i still can't figure out what sort of jeans i should get. i have these awesome grey cotton pants i bought years ago for like $15 in australia and i love them: they're really fitted through the leg, with a really narrow bootcut, and they are the perfect length! didn't have to take up the hems! but the seams on the inner thighs are finally wearing through so must find a replacement.

My go-to jeans are G-Star Raw in cigarette (super skinny) cut.

I love, love, love them now even though I only thought I was buying them because they were cheap. They are a mix of super-dark black and blue in kind of a stripe (I don't know how this is "raw" but it is). Also they were aspirational -- I bought them one size small as they were a bargain.

My only advice on jeans is to buy them as tight and as dark as possible. Then never put them in the dryer, ever.

Well, you don't have to wear capris. I do prefer the skinny jeans short-ish, just around the ankle bone, but that's just me.

Wear them in a thinner material, you just need to try the texture, some jeans are made thicker than others and are hotter. I mean I could go into extreme detail about how every shape can wear those skinny jeans/capris look if you know how to do it but basically wear jeans in the summer but make sure the material isn't one thats too heavy. You'll know, trust.

I ain't worn jeans in over two years, I think? I might never wear them again. This is just me, but I don't think that jeans are very flattering on fifty-something year-old guys. Pair them with sneakers and it gets truly blecch. I want to look dignified in my old age, ffs.

ok you guys, i bought the jbrand jeans. i was meeting my mom at nordstrom anyway, so figured i would try them on which would immediately stop all my longing because they looked so stupid. but they didn't, i really like them.

only trouble is-- they're way more low rise than i'm used to (this is partly because i have a natural urkel waist so everything feels too low rise to me), and i have a tiny bit of muffin top hanging over. they are tight (and very dark), so i don't know if that will improve as it stretches out over the next few wears? i never ever wear tops that bare the midriff, either, so think it shouldn't matter because it will be completely covered. but if it does, please tell me and i will go get my $200 back, that would be OK.

Guys, my company's CEO sent out an email on Friday saying we can all wear jeans through Labor Day. Woo! And I was about to buy some summer work pants. jeans and $$$ saved.

A.P.C. are true to size. They will shrink if you wash in hot water and machine-dry, so I'd rinse in cool water when you need to clean the garment.

The seat and yoke of most jeans are constructed via using chainstitching to make double-interlock flat seams. This means is that jeans in their native state will give a little in the seat(butt)/lower back. With a pair of A.P.C.s that will last at least 10 years, you should try to find the most snug fit possible because they will "stretch" (ie, due to seam construction as opposed to fabrication components). I would go for the 29 (with effort) and if that's too uncomfortable try the 30. Raw denim is very coarse and stiff at first, it will begin softening immediately with wear.

Many US companies began "vanity sizing" in the 80s, convincing people that they wore a smaller size than what the garment measures out to be (eg, a size 27" garment measures to a true 29"). Some brands (like Levi's) resisted this trend for over a decade until they saw their sales decrease because those brands "didn't fit" the consumer. European and Asian companies do not vanity size which may explain the variance.

Vanity sizing is the worst - size small became size large pretty quickly as everyone stopped exercising and started eating like shit. It's crazy, buy a size small from 1980 and it fits like ... a small. You need to get an XXSmall to get an actual small these days.

To learn more about vanity sizing, take a tape measure and your favorite jeans and measure the waist and compare to the stated size.

the thing is, jeans don't sit on my waist. the waist is the narrowest part, by definition, right? even the highest cut jeans go just about to my belly button and then the waist is 2-3 inches above that.

Am I the only one who intensely dislikes this habit with women's jeans to have the hem swallow the shoe entirely? It bugs me even without total swallowing, like when jeans are worn with heels and the back hem drops almost to where the heel meets the ground.

Honestly I think the safest way to wear wide-legged pants is with flats. I can imagine lots of good versions of pants with heels but there's always the risk crossing the line into what Nabisco is talking about. If you're not sure or you're chubby and happy about it or etc, safest is go to with nice pointy low shoes that will peep out but not make you look like you're disguising another 4 inches of height under there.

Also I have several times caught a heel in deep trouser cuffs, once resulting in my falling down the PATH stairs at Grove Street. No thanks! Not after last time!

I took the advice on this thread and bought my last two pairs of Levis as tight as possible and I'm not sure it is the right decision. One pair fits around the waste but is a bit tight around the thighs, so much so that when I walk up the subway stairs I feel very conscious of working against the stiffness of the material. The other pair fits throughout the leg but is a bit tight around the stomach. When i come home I have to undo the top button so that I can be comfortable. Did I follow your advice too literally?

Uh. Denim is a twill. It stretches "on the bias" that is, around your round parts (as do many other woven fabrics to some degree, the gradual stretch and fiber "memory" is just a quality of cotton in general). Which is pretty much everywhere, since jeans are constructed as flat items but have to go on non-flat bodies. You don't have to know anything about fabric! :D

Mary, I'm wearing a new pair of jeans right now that I bought on...last Thurs? One week and about 4 wearings later, they are still a little too tight but still stretching gradually. Personally, that's the tightness I want over the life of the jeans. If they stretch too much now, they'll be baggy in three months. The first few wearings are def not comfortable!

styling details such as abrasions, blasting, whiskering, webbing, tacking... all are designed to specs. on the low-end, production facilities have prefab samples for examples, but on the mid- to high-end, you bring your specs at the design stage and need to be signed off on during the sample approval process.

for vintage/worn looks, absolutely... collection pieces are analyzed for their wearing. i have routinely wear tested many samples and then gave them back to the designer for analysis. i've also had a pair of original vintages borrowed for inspiration. I never accepted money for this, but then again, I was approved on buying trips to R&D competitor's garments, most of which were returned to me.

Bought what are technically my most expensive pair of jeans ever today - got some Glory jeans originally $160 at 60% off. They are your standard dark blue utility jean, but the denim is very heavy and rigid compared to other jeans I've owned. we aren't so far from those. if the cycle of fashion repeats 70-80s move from slim hip-hugger flares to high waisted pleated tapered poufy jeans repeats, skinny jeans having almost finished their run surely means you'll see someone wearing those without irony any day now.

A lot of things come and go without ever breaking the "without irony" barrier. I'll be happy if these pants have their day among the tragically hip and then go away for another 15 years.

The girls are already wearing the shorts version of those jeans: high-waisted and pleated and possibly with cuffs, worn with oxford shoes of some kind probably mousy brown -- very "studenty". As soon as fall hits I'm sure the long versions will make the scene.

i am aware of fashion's cyclical nature, and i am aware that girls are wearing high waisted pleated shorts, BUT

Many US companies began "vanity sizing" in the 80s, convincing people that they wore a smaller size than what the garment measures out to be (eg, a size 27" garment measures to a true 29"). I want to buy some APC jeans but unfortunately nowhere sells them here so I can't try them on. this wouldn't ordinarily be an issue except... I recently bought some 32" waist zara jeans that fit nice however I picked up some 32" cos cords and though I can get them shut they're unbearably tight.

should I just go with the 32" in the APC knowing that I'll size down a bit as we come out of winter and they'll stretch out a bit?

wish there was a "waistline Vs. actual waistline" infographic which took in zara and cos though I suspect cos' trousers are true to size.

anyone have any tips for sealing in jean color? I bought these AE flares on ebay and while they're surprisingly bitchin in color and form they are a saturated dark wash and I find my hands blue after wearing them for an hour or two. I really don't want them to fade.

uniqlo denim are probably the best value jeans out there, in partic. if you are seeking japanese selvage denim.

you are describing "crocking" where the dye isn't set properly and causes bleedage. a quick rinse in (very) cold water should get most of the dye to bleed out but should not damage the richness of the denim. the key to keeping the dye set is to avoid washing/drying. neither cotton nor indigo are very colorfast so minimize the time in the wash/dryer to avoid fading.

actually found somewhere in town that does APC today and tried on the 32. were fine (but black) so going to cop some indigo online

w/ my last pair of colour-bleedy jeans i took the internet's advice and put them on a short cold wash, inside out, no detergent but half a cup of white vinegar, then hung them to dry indoors. it seemed to work - the colour's still dark and doesn't rub off on white bags any more.

ehhh, this is gray territory as everybody's idea of "fit" is not the same, some people enjoy an ultra skin tight girdle effect, others like to sag around their knees. APC use unsanforized denim that is "true to size" (ie, not ShrinkToFit), although there was a trend a few years ago to really undersize which would make for people squeezing into the smallest jeans possible, but that's a separate sport. I've owned about 10 pairs of APCs and they've all fit in the comfortable range of the size spectrum. YMMV.

My size 36 APC New Standards measured 38" unworn and stretched rapidly to where they were downright baggy (if I'd known more then, I would have gotten a 35). Online shop measurements generally back that up - add two inches to tagged size to get the unworn waist. (and the denim is sanforized)

That's why I figure matching the actual waist size of some comfortable jeans to the actual waist of some APCs minus an inch or two (so that it would ultimately stretch to equal the other jeans, since the APCs won't be constantly washed like most people's Gap/etc. jeans) is the safest route.

I am so fucking fed up with jeans. I just bought a pair that fit like a glove in the store and the first time after being washed but after a couple hours they're too loose and bagging out in places.

So upthread, someone mentioned about apc's lasting 10 years or whatever. Do people wear these (or other expensive, high quality jeans) to do yard work or otherwise live an active outdoor lifestyle? Or are they primarily just worn as urban casual wear?

I can't afford expensive, high quality jeans (bitter) so I just get Tommy Hilfiger skinny jeans at Macy's. Honestly, they have been the fitting jeans I have ever owned. That isn't saying much though.

I have a really bad relationship with jeans. At a year old I was given my dad's old, vintage baby pair of Levi's that my mother later cut (mutilated and killed) and turned into shorts. UGH! Would love that pair now for my little girl. Also, because it was the first and last time I was ever in and owned a cool pair of jeans.

At 7 my grandmother bought me a pair with a huge parrot embroidered all the way down the right pant leg and had a matching vest with parrot. Then at 9 I had a pair of Del Rio Jeans, ugh! Made in Del Rio, TX and they had a huge faux leather tag stitched on the back that broadcasted I was proudly wearing poorly designed jeans made in the armpit of Texas. They were snug at the waist with really wide legs that never tapered, just BIG all the way down. I got made fun of when I wore them to school on the day we didn't have to wear uniforms.

Wore 501's most of my adult life. Sad story, me and jeans. Always wanted a nice, selvedge pair that fit perfectly and yes, that were mega pricey. Oh, before Macy's, bought my jeans at Target! How's that for fuckin sad :(

I basically have two kinds of jeans, my work jeans which are all cowboy cut wranglers, and then my everyday jeans which are ralph lauren Double R L and marc jacobs wranglers, both are my favorite jeans, were raw denim, but have worn well. I'd like to buy a few more pairs of the marc Jacobs wranglers but ebay is the only option now.

I don't know anything about nice jeans. Best I do are maybe a $40 Levis, but I usually go for wranglers. But I've been intrigued by the legends of durability that surround raw denim.

I find myself struggling with anything that isn't a v slim or skinny fit, as my legs are sparrow-like. It's really annoying especially when trousers have way too much fabric at the ankle/foot. So been trying to get stuff tailored a bit lately, it's tricky enough tho.

holy eff i tried on like 30 pairs of jeans this afternoon in epic jeans trying-on session. there's a store near my place called jeans jeans jeans and they are rad there but you need stamina. funnily enough i ended up buying the first pair of jeans i tried on. sigh/lol. i tried on so many butt-flattening, love-handle making jeans, argh. anyway, the jeans i got are Nudie jeans, "tube kelly", and they are rad. unisex jeans for me all the way.

seriously i almost cried after about 30 min. never try on jeans when you have pms btw. i forgot.

these jeans are not losing their shape, so far so good, and i've worn them several times with lots of walking and dancing and sitting down, yknow, the stretch-'em-out activities. i hate jeans that stretch out after one or two wears; they are so over for me.

You would be crazy to wash raw denim for at least 6 months, maybe a light hand washing. Quality jeans will grow into their shape the more you wear them without washing, especially if you buy the right fit. Although I have a friend who is serious about jeans and bought a very pricey pair of japanese jeans and climbed into the bathtub filled with hot water with them on. He said they are the best fitting jeans he owns now.

yeah if something horribly dirty befalls me while i'm wearing these jeans i will prob just jump in a lake with them on or something

you should always soak your raw denim for 30 minutes or so in cold water (no soap) and then hang-dry them. this will remove the starch, open up the denim a bit and get any shrinkage out of the way. if they're well-dyed jeans you should hardly notice any loss of color, though they will lose that crispy shiny look.

then you can go ahead and do what jacob is saying.

those jeans aren't stretching because they're not 100% cotton (they're a stretch blend w/ 2% elastic polyester)

i actually disagree w/ jacob, after like 10 years of collecting fancy fancy jeans (up to like $400) i've eventually realized that no matter how you wash and wear them (within reason) you will eventually get denim-nerd fades and creases. the key is to keep putting wear on the jeans. i know people who've worn non-fancy diesel jeans for five or six years and have machine-washed and dried them monthly, and they look more or less like the hot jeans on denim forums. similarly i know people who've ended up w/ that look after a year, machine washing and drying every month, but they rode their bike a couple miles every day in their jeans.

the one thing that jacob's approach actually does well is that it gets the fades and creases in before you go through that awkward medium-blue "mom jeans" color.

but mark my words, the craze for super-dark denim and is dying and i bet you just like terminally unhip shit like crazy pattern shirts and sweaters are suddenly trendy the mom jean denim color (not the fit) will be back soon.

robyn in your case it doesn't matter since your jeans are a stretch blend, so soak or no soak they're not going to change shape.

that has to do w/ the color and fading, not the shape

the thinking is that moving in your jeans causes the cotton fibers to bend and flex which weakens the bond between dye and fabric. similarly parts of the jeans rub up against things which also weakens the bond.

indigo is quite water soluble, so the parts that have been weakened by wear will fade faster. denim heads do the "wash every six months" thing w/ the idea that parts that get a lot of wear (like around the knees and pockets) will develop cool creasing patterns as they fade.

the problem with that thinking is that if you're not actually moving around a ton in your jeans, the effect of the wear will be minimized. i've seen great results from jacob's method and i've seen pretty weak ones. it seems to have to do w/ a lot of variables ... i've seen people beat the fuck out of their jeans and not wash for a year and get terrible fades because whatever they did put wear much more evenly on the jeans. in my case, i had jeans that i wore dancing for a long time and rarely washed and they didn't turn out so good because i think sweating through the jeans kinda put wear on the entire fabric.

on the other hand my gf has some crappy j crew dark denim jeans that got great fades, but that has to do w/ the fact that she wears them ass-tight and spends a lot of time kneeling to help middle school students and running around after them.

so yeah, long story short is ... i don't know.

i suppose you will not be too surprised to learn that there are big forums pretty much devoted to your jeans and how often to wash them

TBH though despite all the hoopla about fading and whatnot, the reasons not to wash your jeans often are:

1) as long as you're not pooping your pants, pants develop odors much more slowly than shirts, and jeans in general are a pretty loose breathable cotton weave so that helps w/ odor too.

2) jeans are rugged wear so they tend to actually look better when they're more beat up than when they're clean and pressed

3) if you like having jeans dark it will keep them dark much longer

like i said i think dark jeans are overexposed and i'm getting more and more into natural shades of jeans

so like, this is what denim heads are trying to do

but what i'm saying is i think as much fun as it is trying to get your jeans to look like that, i'd rather have something more natural like this (that's what i mean by mom jeans color)

Yeah unless you have denim that is dyed with natural indigo the no washing is sort of pointless, I think. The reason I don't wash mine is like valid said, to get the creases and wear before the bottom legs start fading as well. But really I love my jeans just as much before the creases start setting in, I sort of like the process. I've never tried Nudie or many of the designer jeans that say they are raw denim because I don't believe them. My favorites were a pair of dead stock Big E's I used to own that I think we're from the 50's. I bought them in the early 90's before the denim craze came around to the states. Wish I hadn't sold them. I also had a pair of Evisu that I washed and dried and eventually they looked awful, I guess like Mom jeans, so I've never dried my jeans now and rarely wash them.

Man, people are super serious about jeans! I wear them more than any other item of clothing so it's time to invest instead of just repeatedly buying $50 once they inevitably start to sag and lighten too much. So I guess you'd recommend buying them on the tight side?

My friend who got me into jeans in the 90's even buys vintage hand soap and using a wash board on his really expensive vintage Levis and other japanese jeans. There was a line of replica Levis in the early 2000's that I really liked. I don't really keep up with jeans like I used to but they lasted longer than any other denim I had. The problem I always have is the holes that form on the but near the back pocket or a hole in the pocket from my wallet. If the denim is very thick like real raw denim or old Levis this rarely happens.

If you're buying 100% cotton jeans that aren't pre-shrunk you want to buy them tight otherwise they will stretch out and not have a nice form a year from now. even slightly shrunk raw denim with loosen up after wearing.

e if you like how a pair of jeans fits, buy one size smaller in the waist because it'll stretch an inch in the waist

if one size smaller is too tight anywhere but the waist you need a different cut (otherwise even at the bigger size it's going to end up disproportionate - you will either have comfortable waist and too tight everything else or baggy waist and everything else ok)

if they're stretch blend (not 100 percent) they won't really stretch so just buy your size

unwashed unshrunk jeans (unsanforized) are "shrink to fit" so you buy one or two sizes bigger and then rinse because they'll shrink an inch or more

then as you wear them, they stretch and you when they're too stretched you wash again.

no, the fibers contract when they dry. hot water will shrink fabrics if it's as hot as the air in your dryer but in general i don't think that's true for most washers (even on hot)

like boiled wool is shrunk but it's literally boiled for hours.

evaporation also shrinks jeans, which is why they'll shrink even if they dry on a line, but the faster you set them the more they'll shrink.

tbh though i don't think clothing shrinkage is well understood at the molecular level

i think it really depends on what shirt you're wearing. and what kind of pants/jeans. tucking in or not tucking in. high-waisted or low-waisted. will belt make a weird line in yr shirt or what. i have different belts for different purposes. i do know that a lot of women don't wear belts though. but i just feel it pulls the look together. even if the belt is worn outside, as an accessory rather than a utilitarian device.

you have two options stevie: you can get spendy and buy the 1947 501s which are slim fit or you can forego shrink to fit and just get 511s. you might be tempted to buy your regular size and shrink those but you'll get something awkward that won't be as flattering as buying a slim cut in the first place.

Got a pair of madewells rail straight in dark blue wash on sale; not terrible but not great--stretched out quite a bit (2% elastane) and gapes at the waist.

With women's jeans, Levi's seem to offer each cut and color for like 2 seasons or something. Like, they have not made the 531 Low Skinny since the season when I first bought two pairs of them, which is a crying shame. I did just check ebay, which seems like it might be fruitful eventually.
