"June n July" and The Spells' "The Age of Backwards" were both bubbling under. Excuse 17 earned several votes, but "The Drop Dead Look" was easily the most popular of their seven tracks that earned votes.

I had CTD @ #2. Wouldn't have thought to do it prior to the poll, but I did my tracks list first and saw I had shortlisted practically the whole thing.

THR #2, DMO #1? /wishful thinking

no first place votes for call the doctor is kinda insane (esp w/ 3 #1s for the freaking woods)

Just listened to The Woods again yesterday, and the mastering doesn't bug me as much anymore. Also, probably their best collection of songs, and by far their most unhinged performances.

For awhile DMR & THR were neck and neck for #1, but then the former got like 5 individual #1's in row, which sealed that one.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:10 (ten years ago) link

Also stoked to see the hot rock so high. Definitely their most critically underappreciated record in its day, and to me their crowning achievement.

31 Points (12 Votes)

After that, there's a precipitous drop off in points, with entries for the debut coming next, then Heavens To Betsy, the two Corin albums, Cadallaca, and Wild Flag.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:22 (ten years ago) link

Aw, I should've voted for albums. I don't know if it would've made a difference in the end, but AHOTBO would've been my #1.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:22 (ten years ago) link

THR was the only one of their post-S/T records to miss the P&J top 10, and if Wikipedia is to be believed, THR sold substantially less than each of their post-CTD albums.

Seems like THR was a backlash moment in some cases. I remember a review in Alternative Press in which the album got whatever the middle rating was on the scale they were using at the time, with the writer making points about how it wasn't anything they hadn't done as good or better before, and how it seemed like they were putting more effort into side projects then they should. THR was my intro to the band (bought it a few weeks after release) and I just couldn't get my head around how anyone could perceive it as a lackluster release.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:28 (ten years ago) link

I was super excited to hear it, as I was already in love with Dig Me Out, and I bought THR on release day. It exceeded my expectations, and my expectations were that they'd introduce more tension, drama, and mystery into their now-established formula, and that they'd also fuck with that formula.

I always suspected the haters just wanted DMO II.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:52 (ten years ago) link

THR was definitely not as universally loved as Dig Me Out or Call The Doctor.

X-post...Dig Me Out 2 would be great. I'm one of those fans.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:55 (ten years ago) link

If anything, the problem with The Hot Rock was the sequencing. After the alltime opener, it got a little tough going. Picked up on side 2, where DMO and CTD stumbled.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:57 (ten years ago) link

The Hot Rock was the only album (besides the first) that missed the top 10 of Pazz & Jop, and was also their lowest selling album (besides the first). and it's always been by far my favorite, so it's gratifying to see that it's got a lot of support here.

some dude, Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:57 (ten years ago) link

I'm gonna do the "Worst/Least Loved Songs" run now, and I'll fire up the Tracks Rollout tomorrow.

As the points totals reveal, I didn't get alot of takers on this part of the ballot. I'm including this # of them to illustrate a point later to be revealed in the regular tracks list.

On with the show:

I opted out of this poll primarily because I couldn't think of 5 missteps in their catalog that were major enough to really merit inclusion in a "worst" poll.

I really like Was it a Lie and Combat Rock. I didn't end up voting for worst songs. Would have probably just filled my list with songs from the first album.

"Entertain" my pick for worst. Presaged Carrie Brownstein's NPR column career.

Disappointed that All Hands missed the top five. I was very close to putting it as my number two behind Dig Me Out but ended up putting The Hot Rock ahead of it too.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 April 2014 21:47 (ten years ago) link

i had to hear the story behind "was it a lie?" before i could genuinely appreciate it. i always thought AHOTB was their most self-consciously feminist album, but after re-listening to the earlier stuff it might just be that they're more...idk, didactic? than they were before. still love it tho.

I wonder how much of "Combat Rock"'s hate stems not from the politics but from Carrie's cutsey speak-singing accent.

Ah, that's right, I remember now. I did a worst ballot for the Kinks and the Who, but not for the Stones. A few Who songs made both lists, too.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 24 April 2014 22:56 (ten years ago) link

i put who songs on all my worst ballots!

jk, i couldn't imagine putting together a worst ballot for sk, nothing they did ever really annoyed me or continues to annoy me the way say 'long live rock' does, definitely could've predicted a few of those cuts would make it though really hectoring bush era protest songs are something i can forgive very easily, we all lived thru that hell. worst songs are pretty common though and there's always at least one or two cuts i'm a little outraged to see make it.

Kinda hoping there's a Worst Songs side poll for Dylan, and then I kinda want to poll Elton's worst against Dylan's.

Inside Lewellyn Sinclair (cryptosicko), Thursday, 24 April 2014 23:11 (ten years ago) link

I couldn't be bothered to isolate Dylan songs I might hate, because I usually just skip them. Something about Elton's most terrible songs is that many of them weren't ignorable.

horseshoe, Thursday, 24 April 2014 23:30 (ten years ago) link

re: #1 Must Have i guess people like their lyrics murky and ambiguous or not didactic or whatever, but how can you not warm to this:

And for all the ladies out there I wish
We could write more than the next marketing bid
Culture is what we make it yes it is
Now is the time, now is the time
Now is the time to invent, invent, invent
Invent, invent, invent

i just straight up say that to people sometimes. i mean, i don't repeat "invent" six times. but maybe i should.

Was kinda surprised to see "combat rock" so high on the worst. It was on my ballot but chosen as a representative of the multiple songs on one beat I find interminable, and given the nod for being their first song to clear 4:30.

i didn't know about the cadallaca album before this! thank you poll! corin should sing all the songs.

horseshoe, Thursday, 24 April 2014 23:44 (ten years ago) link

My top 5 worst consisted of the two cheesiest "corin has fun" songs in their songbook imo (one made the poll), two somewhat arbitrary selections representing what I don't like from the last two albums soundwise (one made the poll), and the song about how y2k ain't no thing.

da croupier, Thursday, 24 April 2014 23:45 (ten years ago) link

corin tucker's one of two times i've been starstruck and dorky over a celebrity. the first was i working in the shoebox at wuxtry and playing everything falls apart and grant hart literally stuck his head in the door and i went 'grant hart!' like it was an episode of happy days. w/ corin it was basically a replay of the tig notaro story about taylor dayne, almost word for word, except i didn't keep running into her. i think sleater-kinney was my last favorite band, in the sense of yr favorite band meaning something.

man i can't believe you ppl put 'god is a number' on the worst list, that song rocks.

Corin, in a fun webchat from 2000:

Detroit, Michigan: This record seems to be quite a bit more overtly political and perphaps feminist than your previous albums. What is your reaction to the attacks against the so-called feminist agenda by men and women alike recently?

Sleater Kinney: *Corin) I, personally, have really reconnected with my political anger this year, and have felt more inspired than I have in a long time. I've felt disturbed by the mysoginist and sexist things that happened in 1999. By having the privilidge {sic} of an audience, if I can in any way inspire people to change things, I want to.

Re-listening to the album really brings back the memories timecapsule-style. It was a really ugly time, Woodstock '99 only being the crowning acheivement of alot of really odious events and posturing going around. I remember seeing a big report on "Dateline" that fall about how this, I think it was a lesbian student alliance/outreach group from Columbia University was having an event in Central Park that was crashed by this large group of guys who ending up assaulting (both physically and sexually) the attendees. There were camcorders in the crowd, a bunch of footage was captured, and the scary thing was it was all so random--it was't premeditated, the men just showed up and went to town on these young women. I also seem to recall that--despite the evidence--their punishments were fairly light--some fines, perhaps a little community service.

You listen to the album and it's a ticket back to this time before it was so easy to get a hold of thinkpieces, back when instant journalism was in its infancy. You have this time where it felt like some great positive change had occurred, but suddenly <BOOM>, we're back in the stone ages again.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 25 April 2014 03:49 (ten years ago) link

Lie is the track that most gets across that frustration to me IMO, where some of the others on that album feel more about "what do I do with the privilege of an audience" in a more detached way

da croupier, Friday, 25 April 2014 03:58 (ten years ago) link

i think the reason i did't vote in this poll was that i couldn't bear to get sad about how sleater-kinney doesn't exist anymore right now

From Onion AV Club -- one of my favorite music crit paragraphs:

"Sleater-Kinney
Album: One Beat
Label: Kill Rock Stars
When the haze from the dry ice and flashpots finally lifts, and the boy bands, girl singers, and tortured tattoo exhibits that shifted so many units at the turn of the millennium are revealed as the 1910 Fruitgum Company of their day, history will have to rewrite itself in a fashion that focuses on the music that mattered. With each album, Sleater-Kinney continues to assure its place in that yet-to-be-written canon by turning out music of such potency that, by comparison, most other bands don't seem to be trying. "

didn't vote for either "leave you behind" or "good things" and went riff-heavy on my ballot. listening to them again they're great, so i'm not sure if i made the right choice. but on the other hand i just don't connect with their slower stuff anymore, tho at one point i know i must have. rollercoaster is great and i regret not voting for that as well. i never did find the right way to connect with the woods, though there were a few standouts for me -- probably i should pay more attention to it.

anyway, my main point is just to double check i listened to glass tambourine again and its still dire.

Interesting that they went with a new version for the video. Judging by the release date, I guess it was the last thing they recorded.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 26 April 2014 20:34 (nine years ago) link

yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh finally catching up with this for a minute! Hard to add much but the Woods tracks appearing so far make me feel bad about shortchanging that record in my ballot, I fucking loved it when it came out. Maybe I just overplayed the thing.

Cut "What's Mine Is Yours" last-minute from my ballot - I do think it's one of the strongest cuts on the album but somehow when it came voting time, the big awesome guitar solo breakdown thing seemed like dead weight rather than an epic move for texture and space on their most Zep-ish LP.

"Rollercoaster" is awesome, love how busy and thundering and pounding it gets, with the ooh-ooh rockin' rollercoaster stuff gliding up through the mix. Would have made my ballot probably except, as with a lot of Woods tracks, it sounded way shittier and noisier and distorted on headphones from Spotify than it ever did on LP or in concert.

"Modern Girl" ditto actually - listening to the video version, as rough as it is, it sounds like such a Sleater-Kinney song and the moments that always had the most heart (the chorus, the "I DIDN'T BUY NOTHIN'!") come through that much clearer. Also I always loved the donut line.

lol @ the "It's Enough" screenshot. Early on, I was thrown by the sax on it -- riot grrrl with horns? So not punk! But really adds some texture to your usual awesome Corin wailing.

"Ironclad" and "Youth Decay" were the two RAWK ones from All Hands that I was choosing between, went with the former probably because it's a little more top-to-bottom awesome.

my ballot was prejudiced towards the barn-burners (i put "the fox" high in my ballot for the giddiness of "i'll go / i'll go / and there's NO LOOKING BACK!"), but "the size of our love" was so important to me at one point. re-listening evokes a total sense-memory of when i first heard it (first year of college, sitting on the grass outside the library, achingly and fruitlessly in love).

"sympathy" was also on my ballot; i love the combo of corin's concrete despair and and carrie's imagistic strut.

listening through s/t now, which is better than i remembered. its weird how raw the lyrics are. i tend to think of them as a more refined, sort of oblique band even, lyrically, and then you have lyrics like: "Sold out, do, do you wanna it / On a magazine cover? / Take it, it's my body / Take it, I want money / Diamonds are a girl's best friend"

Love "A Real Man", just narrowly missed my ballot. And yeah, it meant a lot to me. The s/t bangs pretty hard, and while there are some lowlights I think it's less spotty than a few of their albums. first track i heard from one beat, i can remember driving around in the country outside of athens listening to wuog when it was still on the air and this just coming on out of nowhere and rocking my fucking world. easily my fave s-k in that pop anthem mode. RIGHTEOUS.

i'm not sure i'll ever get used to it. i'm all 'good for her!' and happy she's getting paid and it beats blogging for npr but even if i'm just watching portlandia (nevermind stuff like the amex commercial) every now and then my head will go 'wtf that's carrie brownstein'. i'm going thru a similar thing now w/ that fucking apple commercial w/ 'gigantic' - i lolled heartily the first time, i was happy that kim in particular was gettting paid, i rolled my eyes at the idea of outrage over an indie song in a commercial at this late a date, and yet now more and more frequently a part of me that is getting louder and louder thinks 'there is something about this specifically that is very weird and very wrong'.

balls, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 10:53 (nine years ago) link

With the "Gigantic" ad, I mostly thought of my high school friends in 1989 who gave me shit for going to see squaresville corporate rock sellouts the Who on their cash-grab reunion tour, while insisting their faves the Pixies (who I dug too) would never fall into any of those sellouty rock-star traps.

OOOOH TOO LOW for "Call the Doctor" -- I had it at #2, and it's my #2 by a large margin. I'd never heard anything like it before -- not with lyrics about socialization, the weird vocal interplay, the vibrato in the lead singer's voice -- and then the explosion during the bridge -- Corin wailing, Carrie screaming -- made me an instant fan. So powerful.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 17:47 (nine years ago) link

When I was getting into them I really didn't like the Call the Doctor album that much at all, the only song that stuck was the title track. The whole album has grown on me a lot but that song in particular has become one of my favourite songs of theirs. Such a brilliant opener.

My #1, and no question about it. The subtle "oooohs" in the chorus (and as I still remember from one of his posts, josh blog noting how even the clapping is so focused and determined), Corin cranking up the insane desperation in her typically awesome vocals, the way she whispers before exploding at the end, this song always makes me tear up and always gets me on the knife's edge of living.

I'd like to take a moment before presenting the Top 5 to point out that at one time or another each of these songs was #1, and it wasn't until the last ballots that anything was set.

I remember popping this into the CD player for the first time and saying, "OK, can you guys top Dig Me Out like I'm unfairly expected you to?" Was very pleased to immediately hear a resounding YES in the form of this song.

yeah we used to have indie rock karaoke here then dude moved to idaho and it just became regular karaoke (actually i guess new guy does have some bikini kill but still it's mainly sorority girls and divorcees alternating between queen and reba). you can ask casino about it. guy was back in town last xmas so there was a one-off show, i closed w/ rem's 'find the river' and pavement's 'here', both right in my wheelhouse.

oh shit! if anyone gets these, please report back with how they sound

compassionate sports, electronic father (reddening), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 01:40 (nine years ago) link

The Chainsaw-era tracks sounds less tinny (presumably a problem from the original mastering), and the early KRS stuff has a skosh more presence. I don't know what they could do to the 2000-up stuff, unless it's possible to do The Woods: Naked and have de-Friedman'd mix.

I Don't Wanna Ice Bucket With You (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 04:09 (nine years ago) link

If that "Entertain" sample is any indication, it sounds pretty much the same, I think.

Hakeem Olajuwon Howard (Leee), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 16:51 (nine years ago) link

Yeah always thought these albums sounded fine.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 20:10 (nine years ago) link

Well, what can you really do to 'remaster' something from the last 15 or so years? I can see the need to spruce up the Chainsaw albums, as they probably didn't get the attention they needed at the time, and of course getting everything back out on vinyl should a big deal for people whom that would be a big deal.

I Don't Wanna Ice Bucket With You (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 22:40 (nine years ago) link

one headphone listen to s/t and CTD flac and they sound so alive; and i noticed some tiny subtle little guitar parts that i hadn't noticed before. haven't delved into the rest yet

Tom Waits for no one (outdoor_miner), Friday, 5 September 2014 13:47 (nine years ago) link

having fun listening and trying to suss differences haven't done any a/b yet. i don't have engineer ears by any means; using a nice nad amp and a pair of sony mdr-7506 phones. ctd tunes seem to have more "bite". definitely a better mix in my mind when checking closely. just now digging into DMO and i think Janet's sound (noticing the snare esp) has more midrange (maybe it's in my mind). but it's def. a improvement overall. subtle for sure and for fans listening very closely. i reckon as i go on differences will be less obvious but who the hell knows. curious to get to the woods and see if i am able to stand more volume. typically listen to that one on the quiet side since it's SO frikken loudly mastered on the original. the originals do sound "fine" but the best band of the 1990's/early lost decayed (decade) deserves special treatment, wot

i saw that yesterday and it amused me how dramatically different their ranking was from ILM's

some dude, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 12:48 (nine years ago) link

all of the albums are good with a slight decline circa All Hands on the Bad One and, perhaps, its predecessor, which has at least been overrated here, while One Beat and perhaps Call the Doctor are underrated.

i wholeheartedly reject the judgment of any poll that puts "pompeii" in the BOTTOM FIVE of all s-k songs, below even "write me back fucker."

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:20 (nine years ago) link

UPDATE: Shortly after this list was published, two new Sleater-Kinney songs were discovered to have been released as a bonus 12-inch single with the vinyl edition of No Cities to Love. The list has been since updated to include them.

"omg new songs, hurry figure out how they stack against songs you've known for 15 years" is some clickhole logic

campreverb, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 20:13 (nine years ago) link

campreverb, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 20:59 (nine years ago) link

They were. I bought a CD at that show because their set was so good. Recordings didn't live up to the show, but there were some good tunes.
