<3 that Coco Solid track. Produced by the guy responsible for this mid-aughts Kiwi kitchen-sink cult classic. JF, did you hear her track w/Tim Paris from late last year, Rain?

(re: 2014 stuff, still catching up w/2013, but Nicki Minaj's "Boss Ass Bitch" remix ruled January)

etc, Monday, 3 February 2014 08:30 (ten years ago) link

Hadn't heard either of those, but they're both great. I mainly know her from Parallel Dance Ensemble.

Is that Minaj thing a straight up remake of the PTAF song? I haven't listened to it, but I noticed they get a "featured" credit.

I don't feel like I've heard a lot of new music this year. I could name you maybe only 3 or 5 key releases from 2014 that stick out in my mind, but it's nearly April already so what's going on? It usually starts hotting up from now one surely?

1 pONO 3v3Ry+h1n G!!!1 (dog latin), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 15:36 (ten years ago) link

you're asking that just after multiple people have posted substantial lists?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 15:50 (ten years ago) link

It's not exactly the longest thread in ILM history. I can only see three lists in the whole thing. Could have sworn this thread was much longer by this time last year. Maybe not.

It is an unusually short faves of the year thread for this time of year but I haven't been trying hard to hear new things so far this year, so I'm not going to jump to any conclusions about 2014 based on that.

So far this year I've liked the Real Estate and Sun Kil Moon albums. I'll probably pick up the new Tune Yards this week - hoping that will make the short list.

o. nate, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 13:57 (ten years ago) link

Against Me! easily my fave album of the year thus far, though I really like the new ones from Emm Gryner and Toni Braxton/Babyface. A bunch more that sound promising one/two listens in that I need to spend more time with.

Tracks-wise, here's how my iTunes playlist of fave songs from the year looks right now:

Beyonce ft. Jay-Z – “Drunk in Love”
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings – “Retreat!”
Bruce Springsteen – “Frankie Fell in Love”
Against Me! – “Transgender Dysphoria Blues”
Toni Braxton – “I Wish”
Disclosure ft. Mary J. Blige – “F for You”
GRL – “Show Me What You Got”
Betty Who – “Heartbreak Dream”
Emm Gryner – “Excess Baggage”
Beatrice Eli – “Girls”
How to Dress Well – “Repeat Pleasure”
Sky Ferreira – “I Blame Myself”

Phantogram's "Fall in Love" is the big one for me so far...

otterface (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 15 May 2014 19:04 (ten years ago) link

Either a weak year so far, or I'm getting old. Noteworthy in my world:

Warpaint - Warpaint
Francis Harris - Minutes of Sleep
St. Vincent - St. Vincent
Darius - Romance EP
Phantogram - Voices
Todd Terje - It's Album Time
Tycho - Awake
The Colourist - The Colourist

Singles (not above):

Holly Herndon - "Chorus"
Indiana - "Solo Dancing"
Iamamiwhoami - "Fountain"
Ivan Dorn - "Dancing Penguin"
Gazelle Twin - "Belly of the Beast"
A Sunny Day in Glasgow - "In Love With Useless"
Kiesza - "Hideaway"
...and irritatingly, Clean Bandit - "Rather Be" & The Presets - "Goodbye Future"

I'm usually months behind on the tracks front (still catching up to 2013). High hopes for the forthcoming Roisin Murphy, GusGus, Gazelle Twin, Grimes, Hundred Waters, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, and Xeno & Oaklander.

My favorite tracks of the year lean indie/ambient/electronic--here's a Spotify mix: http://t.co/Mm28dvzdik

On the indie/rock/songwriter side I've heard a lot of great tracks and good albums but none have hit me in a truly special way. My favorite albums of the year so far are much more on the ambient/instrumental side:

Rebekka Karijord: Music for Film and Theater
Fennesz: Becs
Koen Holtkamp: Motion
Porya Hatami: Shallow

It is my fave Tzadik release this year and there have been some great ones. It is Kang's interpretations of tunes from Zorn's monumental Book Of Angels series and it is beautiful. If you liked The Narrow Garden no reason why you won't love this. Kang is such a great arranger he makes these fuckers sparkle, some really gorgeous stuff on here.

Mordy, Sunday, 6 July 2014 20:07 (nine years ago) link

i will check this out post-haste in that case. Not familiar with that much of Zorn's stuff, so I hope that doesn't matter too much.

3kDk (dog latin), Monday, 7 July 2014 08:21 (nine years ago) link

i don't think it matters. i've been curious for a while about the extent to which the book of angels releases come directly from zorn's compositions and to what extent the artists/composers on the albums can improvise/rewrite pieces. each of book of angels release tho is so different from one another that i don't think you need to have heard any others to appreciate this one (tho there are plenty of other amazing ones that are worth checking out). also iirc zorn is starting the 3rd volume in the series soon? 1. masada, 2. book of angels, 3. ?

Really feeling that new Dimitri From Paris mix, although the house disc is far better than the disco mix. What is the Bottin like? I loved "No Static" from a few years ago but everything I've heard since has been nowhere near as good.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 23:35 (nine years ago) link

Funny, I vastly prefer the disco mix - which, BTW, is great for working out, too.

Torn Hawk - Through Force of Will
Caribou - Can't Do Without You
Fhloston Paradigm - The Phoenix
Quiltland - s/t
OOIOO - Gamel

Sébastien Tellier - L'Aventura

More stuff in my 2014 tracks and albums lists, should ppl be scouting for talent.

Two Aussie takes on post-punk, one grown-up sounding and one bratty, completely taking over my listening lately.

Total Control - Typical System (the grown up one)
Ausmuteants - Amusements

One of them probably destined for favorite album of the year. 2nd one is much less stupid-sounding than reviews had led me to believe, kind of transcends its lyrics in a big way. I was looking for a thread but couldn't find one, but curious if there's a big Aussie scene that sounds like this, or if it's just random.

convinced that these two are minor classics. esp laurence crane. did you check out the taku sugimoto record? it's my fav of the year so far, you'd def like it judging by your list

missingNO, Friday, 15 August 2014 22:55 (nine years ago) link

nice, haven't given it a proper listen yet.. wasn't too moved by Live in Saritote (kamura/sugimoto) from last year, and my appetite for these beuger/frey-like, sort of tenuously played sound worlds is not so strong. though the recordings are very nice, with a lot of room sound.

the edwards/sanders/tibury disk on fataka really shook things up for me.

What's this like, Moka? I've delved into Graham Lambkin's back catalogue but I don't know much about Lescaleet

― 3kDk (dog latin)

If you enjoyed the Lambkin/Lescaleet release you know what to expect. It's only three tracks long, the first song is a deconstructed, melancholic piano ballad (so, similar to Stars of the Lid or the Breadwinner collaboration with Lambkin), the second one is a drone/tape piece and the last one is between drone and noise music.

If you never heard him before I'd recommend starting with The Pilgrim instead of this one, but this one is definitely one of the top 5 albums I've heard of him for me.

The suggested artists on Spotify is confusing though:

Connan Mockasin, Fuck Buttons, Broadcast, Actress

yeah, that sounds good! another italian thing i'm kind of enjoying atm is the clap! clap! album 'tayi bebba' which is basically samples of various african recordings over footwork beats. might sound like a clunky concept but it's pretty engaging music. there's definitely the whole issue of cultural appropriation to be wrestled with though

Anyone else knocked out by 'No Deal' by Melanie De Biasio? Surprised no mention yet on ILM. If you like any of the following, do seek it out.
- Spririt Of Eden or Mark Hollis (not as in exact soundalikes but as in, if you put it on after one of these, you wouldn't be dramatically altering the mood)
- albums that sound good on your bourgeois stereo and make you want to turn the lights down and listen all the way through

Total Freedom - "10,000 Screaming Faggots" & Rinse FM Podcast -- this year he's become my favourite American musician, ah, ever
Untold - "Echo In The Valley" -- freed from beats! I hope he sticks with this amazing new direction
Alessandro Cortini - "Sonno" -- have you heard this? it is a 303 + delay pedal and is recorded entirely in hotel rooms and it actually sounds exactly like the feeling of being on tour
Shabazz Palaces - "Lese Majesty" -- and their clothes and photo shoots have been the best there is actually nothing bad to say about these guys
Run The Jewels - "2" -- usually only listen to alpha-male hip-hop to grab tracks for mixes for when friends are over and want to listen to normal party music but this record melted my heart
Xiu Xiu - "Red Guts: Angel Classroom" -- ummm this is actually the best latter-day Xiu Xiu record and one of the best engineered/mixed records I've ever heard and made me a #1 fan of John Congleton
Against Me! - "Transgender Dysphoria Blues"
Fatima - "Yellow Memories"
Mika Levi - "Under The Skin OST"
Hank - "Showers Of Happiness"
Pharmakon - "Bestial Burden"

Also been listening a lot to Bing And Ruth "Tomorrow Was The Golden Age", Hauschka "Abandoned Cities", Drumm/Lescalleet "The Abyss", and A Winged Victory For The Sullen "Atomos" but that's more of me trying to better understand the Erased Tapes aesthetic & missing Stars Of The Lid.

neneh cherry blank project (unbelievable rhythmic accomplishment imo)
gerard way hesitant alien (album is deceptively slight, after a few listens the songs expanded considerably, it is also maybe the one of four records on this list that engages with queerness and mental illness)
javiera mena otra era (i listened to this while walking at night in the very very cold and it made me feel like the world was unpeeling into vhs-quality warmth and sunlight ymmv)
dj quik the midnight life

lee ann womack the way i'm livin' (probably the best narrative album of 2014, whole thing deepens incredibly as you listen to it)
driver friendly unimagined bridges (austin emo band that released my favorite album of 2012, this one is almost as good, gleaming guitar tones as therapy)
the hotelier home like noplace is there (everyone thinks this is the emo album of the year and they're not wrong)

BRONCHO - Just Enough Hip to Be Woman (picked this up after reading about it on a Johnny Fever thread - catchy, Cars-influenced, indie rock)
DJ Quik - The Midnight Life (thematically seems a little less edgy than Book of David - more laidback - Quik is brilliant as ever)
Parquet Courts - Sunbathing Animal (initially felt a bit monochromatic to me, but it's been growing on me, an interesting evolution from their previous album)
Real Estate - Atlas (just solid songwriting and a lovely, meticulous recording - I'm a sucker for this sort of mopey, pretty, guitar crap)
Sun Kil Moon - Benji (hella uneven, but some striking highlights)
Triptykon - Melana Chasmata (a huge slab of dark abrasive sludgey riffs- love it)
TUNE-YARDS - Nikki Nack (I prefer this to whokill - an embarrassment of hooks)
The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream (ah, the '80s - reminds me of my youth - the solos are often the best parts)
Witch Mountain - Mobile of Angels (solid '70s throwback stoner-doom band with a captivating singer)

heard the temples vs beyond the wizards sleeve album yet ?

i hadn't heard the source album until i got the deluxe today.
as per usual with these albums when indie bands get in a dance orientated crew to redo a whole album, i always end up preferring the remixed version : auteurs vs mu-siq, chapterhouse vs global comms, kora vs cabaret voltaire, tivoli vs cabaret voltaire etc.

that said, the original album does sounds like something that could become a playlister.

Shiina Ringo's Hi Izuru Tokoro (English title: Sunny) is a B or B-.

Has some great cuts on it, especially the handful of jazzy songs with very bright horn sections, all in the first half of the album, that I think are new for this release. Still, the total album doesn't work well as an album, which isn't surprising considering it collects various singles, a bunch of them commissioned theme music of one sort or another. (Sanmon Gossip was better at this, though I think this new one is better taken on a song by song basis.)

Not on Spotify and not on youtube (as far as I've been able to determine), but it's around.

oh shoot, you're right, i didn't hear it til this year. i think that nenad markovic record is considered an LP, not that it matters, i just noticed b/c i was refraining from starting to list a million EPs.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 18 November 2014 06:10 (nine years ago) link

i'm gonna go out on a limb here and call mark e's album "underrated" b/c i didn't notice anyone talking about it despite mark e being a pretty big deal. it took a while to sink in, but aside from 'being hiding' which breaks the spell, i think it's pretty excellent.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 18 November 2014 06:12 (nine years ago) link

also i forgot that suzanne kraft album and the torn hawk, love thsoe. gonna check out the stuff i don't recognize on your list lamp b/c i dig most of it.

I heard Estelle's "Make Her Say (Beat It Up)" when it came out last spring, but in the last few days I've been playing it a whole lot and it's turned into one of my favorite tracks of the year. It's crazy how much song is packed into 2:38 but I don't think I'd want it to be any longer than it is. Completely perfect.

I made a Spotify mix of my favorite tracks of the year.

The mix is a little over two hours; I tried to make a cohesive mix to be listened to from beginning to end, rather than ranked. It seems unfair to try to rank something like the New Pornographers’ ebullient hooks against, say, Porya Hatami’s serene ambient.

1. Steve Moore: Logotone (actually from late 2013)
2. Spoon: Rent I Pay
3. The New Pornographers: War on the East Coast
4. Temples: Shelter Song
5. Ryan Teague: Remote Outliers
6. White Rainbow: Killswitch
7. Actress: Rule
8. Angel Olsen: Unfucktheworld
9. The New Mendicants: Sarasota
10. The War on Drugs: Red Eye
11. Hospitality: Last Words
12. Marissa Nadler: Firecrakers
13. Rebekka Karijord: Madrigal
14. A Winged Victory for the Sullen: Atomos VII
15. Sharon Van Etten: Your Love is Killing Me
16. Porya Hatami: After the Rain
17. Majical Cloudz: Your Eyes
18. Future Islands: Seasons (Waiting on You)
19. Wye Oak: Before
20. Fennesz: Bécs
21. Koen Holtkamp: Between Visible Things
22. Beck: Waking Light
23. Woods: Moving to the Left
24. The Growlers: Big Toe
25. Hamilton Leithauser: I Retired
26. Karen Gwyer: You Big
27. Hundred Waters: Murmurs
28. Orcas: Sela

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 7 December 2014 21:49 (nine years ago) link

The Koen Holtkamp album is very good! Came out in the late spring I think, plus a bonus disc of previously vinyl-only stuff.

And re Karen Gwyer - she did two EPs this year, both better than her album from last year.

Anyone who likes the ambient stuff in my list, do check Porya Hatami. He made three albums this year, all good.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 7 December 2014 22:34 (nine years ago) link

seandalai: there was a ltd vinyl only koen holtkamp album (motion) that came out this year, but also a comp (motion: connected works) that included both that and also just about all his other solo stuff as well, with the exclusion of the first album (field rituals)

ha xp

Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 11 December 2014 18:06 (nine years ago) link

I came across her via a column in Drowned in Sound, and I've basically never seen any other reference to her anywhere. The album is on Spotify.

She is from Finland (or was it Norway?). I might be mistaken but I believe her earlier material is more songwriter-oriented. This album is all piano, strings, voice. It can seem very "small" and fragmented on first listen but also there is some mystery to it. I kept coming back to it all year because I felt like I hadn't fully unlocked everything. It became more and more compelling as I listened to it. I'm hesitant to draw comparisons but, very broadly speaking, if you are a fan of Julia Holter or Juliana Barwick, you'll probably find something to enjoy in this album. She doesn't exactly sound like those artists but she is similarly abstract.
