Kacey Musgraves - 2013 Anticipation

I never thought I'd be posting new thread in a ILM country anticipation thread. I was listening to an NPR podcast, where Ann Powers was discussing this single released by country singer Kacey Musgraves, called "Merry Go 'Round".

Maybe the album will turn out shit but this single will rank in my top 20 for 2013 for sure.

it actually did pretty well in the Pazz & Jop 2012 singles. i was the first person to post it on ILM! but yeah, looking forward to the album! she was great on Fallon a couple weeks back.

i remember the first time i heard "Merry Go Round," the local country station was doing a 'hey it's 10pm let's throw a new song out there and see what they think' thing and i was like damn well this is different

Album is really, really good. I've got a long Spin review of that and Ashley Monroe's album (which I might like even more) running this week -- My two favorite albums of 2013 so far. (At least I think it's running this week -- deadline was last Thursday, and I already got the edit back.)

also did you all know she co-wrote "mama's broken heart", the best song on miranda lambert's last album

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

first impression: her VOICE. it's interesting cuz she's so detached - not in the blank sense, she's fully emotionally involved in her situations, but almost dispassionate, almost snotty. it's not a vocal stance i've heard much in country, it almost reminds me of...aimee mann or someone? it really works.

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

Good album. "Blowin' Smoke" is a good safe choice for a second single; it'll sound good coming out of truck radios. But what's stopping her people from shipping a few promos of "Follow Your Arrow" to some non-country formats, I wonder. Maybe chucking a cheap lyric video on Youtube while they're at it.

that standard of writing is basically "listened once, initial thoughts that i dumped on ilx"

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 22 March 2013 17:40 (eleven years ago) link

His country writing is fraught. His last couple: Ashley Monroe: "how rare it is for a major-label Nashville hopeful to put this much care into every song" (nonsense). Pickler: "American Idol haunts this artistic breakthrough, a sense that she'll always sing what she's told no matter how many composition credits she bags" (so what?). The reviews argue that the songs and their performances are triumphs anyway; I question the assumptions that their Nashville and AI backgrounds would make us wary.

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:39 (eleven years ago) link

"keep it to yourself" is so empathetic (like, she ends up in an unfulfilling booty call two songs later) that it's just ice cold

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:39 (eleven years ago) link

instagrammy video for "merry go round" is interesting too, b/c that's def a route through which i can see her crossing over

"blowin' smoke" is so well constructed, like the first verse is such a red herring - you think it's going to be about kelly who escapes the small town but no it's about the waitresses who sneered at her but got stuck there forever (but pretty non-judgmental too)

"stupid" is just awesome. STUPID LOVE IS STUPID DON'T KNOW WHY WE ALWAYS DO IT. she's so over everything and i love it

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:42 (eleven years ago) link

"Step Off" is a perfect little throwaway, quieter than Taylor Swift's "Mean."

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:42 (eleven years ago) link

apparently "i miss you" lifts the tune from some radiohead song? w/vs she certainly improved it

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:42 (eleven years ago) link

"Step Off" is a perfect little throwaway, quieter than Taylor Swift's "Mean."

kacey's over-everything attitude comes into its own there, like you really believe that it doesn't affect her even though she's troubled herself to write a whole song about it (whereas taylor - deliberately - gives the game away in the middle eight)

also helps "follow your arrow", like the line about kissing girls isn't there to Make A Point (well it is, but her delivery ensures it's not signposted heavy-handedly), it's there because duhhh

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:44 (eleven years ago) link

this is my 2nd fav album of the year, anyway

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:45 (eleven years ago) link

I was driving around DC listening to the local country station when I heard "Blowin' Smoke" for the first time. I had no idea who it was by, but made a note to find out. The next day or so I randomly came across two reviews of Musgraves, so I made a note to buy the album when I got home. Then when I played the album and heard "Blowin' Smoke" I though, huh, that's really how this is supposed to work, right? Hear a song on the radio, read a couple of reviews, get rewarded with a great record.

Been enjoying this album. In Merry Go 'Round, I first heard the "Mary two doors down" line as "Mary Tudor's down" and thought she might really be reaching with a 16th century reference in there.

Bobby McFerrin, Quantum Physicist (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 11 April 2013 05:28 (eleven years ago) link

this album is great! the opener, "Silver Lining", is killing me: the chorus' melody is the catchiest thing I've heard all year. I love the sound of her voice.

is there any feeling that the album's going to be a hit? it seems pretty low key for that. like it reminds me as a really well crafted take on the alt.country tunes I jammed in the 90s; & we know how that was received by Nashville.

Euler, Friday, 12 April 2013 13:40 (eleven years ago) link

Great concert! Such a beautiful voice. Not to mention beautiful looks omg I was stunned. BUT THE SETLIST WAS TOO SHORT! No "Dandelion" :( :( It felt like that boring opener guy was on for longer.

can they still be bought?

i'm jealous of everyone who got to see this show. she's opening on kenny chesney's tour but idk how i feel about going to a giant arena show primarily for an opening act.

the more i think abt it the more "follow your arrow" seems like it is destined to be a live/fan favorite that nonetheless will probably not quite work on the radio. glad she is pushing for it tho. i think "keep it to yourself" would be a gorgeous fall/wintertime radio single.

teddy dominatrix (dyl), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 00:41 (eleven years ago) link

uberweiss you shoulda said hi! i was going to moot some sort of pub drinks beforehand but i had to be elsewhere and sadly missed the opening guy. thought her set was surprisingly long given the album's only 35mins - only songs she didn't play were "dandelion" and "i miss you" (hmm, the most lovelorn ballads), but she played two older songs and the lambert/weezer covers instead.

voice much less diffident than on record - "keep it to yourself" was kind of revelatory, prob my highlight, totally slanted towards the empathetic side, maybe even the subtext that she herself is thinking the same things (and of course ultimately even more ice cold for it).

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 08:11 (eleven years ago) link

and yeah the setlist wasn't actually short, just in that i wanted it to go on and on.

"i'm ashamed of bush... don't ruin my career" was lol

It's all available for free download on her soundcloud at 128 kbps and only three tracks have been released as an EP on iTunes, so I don't know what's going on there.

i was curious about these too. they seem to be extraordinarily rare. the most recent one, self-titled (from 2007, when she was 18) was apparently sold here. but now it is sold out, and, as the site notes, "WHEN THEY'RE GONE, THERE WILL BE NO MORE OF THIS CD... EVER!" however, if you would like to buy a copy, there is one on amazon for $370 rn lol. anyway, apparently the album has a few miranda lambert co-writes on it.

as for the others, idk where they were actually sold. buuut i do see them (+ the 2007 one) on this weird probably-sketchy site called soundsbox?? the preview clips appear to be legitimate... but idk whether to trust the site. it seems to be along the same vein as that alltunes/allofmp3 site from last decade, which sold mp3s for dirt cheap prices and was/is way illegal.

It's time to tip our hats to Miranda Lambert, who with Musgraves, Ashley Monroe, and Pistol Annies albums heads a cottage industry that's produced three of the year's best albums.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:32 (ten years ago) link

seems like women country music artists are just miles ahead of men these days. probably there's a thread about this somewhere. I wonder if it's that the audience for country music these days is heavily women (I think that's true?); because then male singers & songwriters are expected to address different concerns to that audience than women are; & in particular women can give more attention to observation and less on causing things to happen.

seems like women country music artists are just miles ahead of men these days

I'd say that the same holds true in rock and pop as well, but, yes, I agree with you, women dominate the list of interesting artists in country.

When Sleater-Kinney were at their peak, I remember thinking that women with guitars was the future. I just didn't expect it to be in Nashville.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 9 May 2013 03:18 (ten years ago) link

I think maybe the innately conservative nature of country music makes it easier to make your mark whenever you deviate from the norm. Of course, it doesn't always work out (looking at you, Brad), but women in particular have (and always have had?) perhaps more potential to do something interesting in this milieu. I mean, god knows, the dudes have ruled, but the women (from Patsy to Dolly to Loretta to Emmylou and so on) have always rocked the boat in the best possible way. There's just so much more they can write about, and it doesn't hurt that the mode for young country dudes right now seems to be almost exclusively party music. But then, as Alfred pointed out, it's a pretty close circle of country ladies doing the interesting stuff.

two weeks pass...

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/26/arts/music/out-and-riding-high-in-nashville.html?hp&_r=0

Changes do seem to be afoot in Nashville. Mr. McAnally cites the reaction to Ms. Musgraves’s debut, the closest thing country has to a Generation Y manifesto, as evidence of “hunger” for a new kind of country music. The close-knit group of collaborators that produced that album includes Mr. McAnally; Ms. Musgraves; Mr. Osborne; Luke Laird, a songwriter-producer with dozens of hits under his belt; and Brandy Clark, a rising singer-songwriter, and a lesbian.

Like previous Nashville iconoclasts they are changing country from the inside, upholding its songwriting traditions while tweaking its clichés and tipping its sacred cows. Ms. Musgraves’s mission statement song is “Follow Your Arrow,” co-written by Mr. McAnally and Ms. Clark, which spunkily advocates nonconformity of various kinds, including same-sex romance: “Make lots of noise/Kiss lots of boys/Or kiss lots of girls, if that’s what you’re into,” Ms. Musgraves sings.

Ms. Musgraves recalled the “Follow Your Arrow” co-write: “I had a few lines, ‘Make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys.’ I was like: ‘I wish I could just say: ‘Or kiss lots of girls.’ And Shane was like, ‘Why can’t you?’ I’m not sure that line would have happened if Shane wasn’t in the room.”

very nice, didn't know McAnally was gay.

still want to think more about the correlation between today's *audience* of country music, & the success of McAnally & the coterie of singers mentioned in the article---like, what is it about that audience that primes them to respond to these songs? maybe the answer is, nothing, duh, they're just good songs, nice melodies, good singing...but I think there's more than that to it. but it hasn't been the month for me to do that thinking alas.

Wow, that McAnally story read like a major piece. Clip and save.

I think the success of the songs he and slightly similar writers have come up with stems from something I think I mentioned upthread. Country music is still so formally conservative that it doesn't take much to stick out. At the same time, many of its fans are so attuned to its tropes that they've become really sensitive (in every sense) listeners, receptively picking out every witty turn of phrase and totally aware of the subtleties of each track's narrative. It's also a fan base pretty evenly divided between men and women, so the audience is by definition broad. Play by the rules as a writer and, ironically, you are accorded more freedom to flaut the rules, since once you've hooked a fan base they'll have your back forever.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 26 May 2013 13:28 (ten years ago) link

right; I think in your last sentence you mean "rules" in two different senses, though. in the first instance you mean the "formal" rules: these are melodic & textural rules. then in the second instance, you mean the topical rules: what you can talk about. in the second sense though you can't flaunt things too much: the audience isn't gonna buy much in the way of say science fiction (Joe Diffie's "Third Rock from the Sun" pushes that about as far as you can go). You gotta write about things that are "real". but what's "real" for country's audience today is pretty broad! & as long you're writing hooks that meet the formal rules, you can stray pretty far from conservative orthodoxy...as long as you're staying within what's real for that audience. homosexuality is nowadays within its audience's real.

Euler, Sunday, 26 May 2013 14:13 (ten years ago) link

This is how genre fiction works, too, you know. Mystery fans and airport-thriller fans and horror fans and sci-fi fans all know what they want, and the folks who play within the rules but tweak them in some small but vital way rocket to the top of the heap with astonishing speed.

Re Kacey Musgraves, I read that Times article this morning and checked for her on YouTube - the first performance I came across was "Merry Go Round," from a recent awards show, and I didn't like it much. But I'm listening to the album on Spotify now and it's pretty good. I don't totally love her voice, though - it's too crystal clear and pretty-girl chirpy for me, I wish it had more grit to it.

Really like Brandy Clark, the songs are just so well done. Lots of great little touches:

-leaving out the final refrain of "Divorce" is such a nice move, the song just hangs there as it fades out....
-love the organ and guitar swells in "Hungover", and the half chorus is another tasty choice...
-"Stripes": I'm a sucker for this sound, and dropping back to the minor chord on the final word, "stripes" in the chorus is just delicious....
-"He's some stranger's husband, and I'm some stranger's wife" is the heartbreakingest line I've heard in a long time....

Good stuff

i have so many thoughts on brandy clark that i haven't managed to write down yet - i didn't know she was a lesbian

she seems to have taken down all but four songs from her soundcloud? so glad i got them before she did that. further research indicates that "the day she got divorced" has been done by reba mcentire and "crazy women" by leann rimes - neither as good as clark's own versions

"just like him" is exactly as much of a sucker punch as she intends it to be, especially the big line about love being like coming home but she came from a broken one

Never let it be said that Hank Williams III hasn't brought something new and different to the world of heavy metal. Danny Barnes of the Bad Livers once opined that a really fast speed metal tune was roughly the same tempo as an ordinary bluegrass breakdown, and Hank3 seems to have reached a similar corollary regarding the verbal speed of punk rock howlers like H.R. of the Bad Brains or Keith Morris of the Circle Jerks, and the syllable-crushing skills of a good auctioneer. Credited to Hank 3's 3 Bar Ranch, Cattle Callin is a 75-minute exercise in a genre Williams calls "Cattle Core," in which he marries speed metal guitar figures and high velocity double-kick drumming to recordings of livestock auctioneers as Hank cranks out neck-snapping tempos and sheets of metallic noise, while guys shout out one price after another for this steer or that heifer with a velocity that makes Hank sound like he's the one straining to keep up. If this sounds like a joke, Hank seems to be having fun with it, but he also shows a genuine respect for the these guys and their very real talents, and the music he weaves around the auctioneer's calls not only makes reasonable sense but twists in and out of the patterns of these found vocals with rough-hewn grace (though the pace is fast and relentless enough that there isn't much rhythmic ebb and flow).

Supposed Former ILM Lurker (WeWantMiles), Monday, 14 October 2013 09:00 (ten years ago) link

yeah it was a surprisingly pan-genre show. she did the weezer song last time (i don't know it) but i was surprised by "i put a spell on you" and "three little birds"! both played quite straight, she didn't pretend to be a torch singer or (thankfully) do reggae, but she didn't countrify them either. she did a great job of linking them to her own songs: during "i put a spell on you" i was thinking, this reminds me of her bluesy version of "mama's broken heart" - which she then segued into. and during "step off" i thought, wow, never noticed the kind of ska rhythm, can totally imagine a reggae version of this song and then she segued into "three little birds".

pretty packed house and audience loved it, amazed by how much she's blown up - it was barely 6 months ago that she played to a not-at-all-sold-out bush hall.

Surprised to find out that Brandy Clark wrote a chunk of this album, because I've played Same Trailer Different Park more than most albums this year and can't get into the Brandy record at all. Partly because its character observations just feel dull to me, whereas the Kacey album has so much more spark and wit.

I've played the Caitlin Rose album a ton this year as well, maybe that's at the slightly indier end of the spectrum but it's also great.

It's a bit of burying the lede there. After all, TV/radio has a long history of censoring mentions of drug use. Granted, it's erratic, but it'd be more of a bad thing if they somehow subverted or censored the sentiment of the song rather than that one detail.

I'm getting the sense from this thread that a lot of what people love about Musgraves comes down to the lyrical content, something that rarely matters in a big way for me as a positive (though it can matter as turnoff) about music. This especially jumps out in xhuxk's review. Maybe I read it too quickly but it seems overwhelming about what the music is "about." Also, all of this: popular music talking about the underbelly of society! excitement is a bit puzzling. I know we are talking country specifically, but is it really that unusual country? I'm sure I must be missing some more basic musical appeal here. It's probably just not (currently) for me, I still am not much of a country fan; though I have been checking out a little Leann Rimes (I love "Blue"), inspired by talking with a young aspiring country singer I know with a much less than six degress of separation connection to Rimes.

It's not that I find what I've heard of the Musgraves album unpleasant, but it just doesn't excite me. I'll probably try again at some point.

To pick it up from a different end, I'd be interested in hearing more about what people like about the way this music sounds. Maybe I've missed it. I know there have been some specific (but general) comments on what's special about Musgraves' delivery.

A very young, not unattractive aspiring country singer, tbf.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:17 (ten years ago) link

I'll be honest, I came to Musgraves as mostly an outsider to modern country music, like besides T. Swift, Miranda Lambert, etc., so I don't really have a lot to go by besides lyrical content.

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:19 (ten years ago) link

Well, the music doesn't sound like Def Leppard, so that's something that sets it apart from a lot of radio country. It's not afraid to be quiet or sound like people playing in a the same room. It's not afraid to be thoughtful or sensitive or sound like something other than the soundtrack to kegs being loaded off the back of a pick-up because Friday night woooo! I mean, it's no avant-skronk boundary pushing fusion or anything but Musgraves seems to recognize that there are various boundaries in country music just as she recognizes that there are subtle and smart ways to sneak past them.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

Well, the music doesn't sound like Def Leppard

And xhuxk still likes it?!

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:24 (ten years ago) link

it's an interesting question. i normally don't put a ton of importance on lyrics -- a lot of my favorite songs i still don't know the lyrics to, and i'll just sing along in some soundalike gibberish if i'm so compelled -- and yet i do think the lyrics on this album are especially tough to separate out from its sound (and indeed, at her recent show, i found myself singing along to every single word). sometimes what i love about the way the record sounds is how well it evokes the lyrical content: the guitar solo at the end of the "i miss you" chorus as a lonely call; the carefree lazy sound of the plucked banjo at the beginning of "it is what it is" like a resigned shrug of the shoulders. and sometimes it's in contrast: the warm, softly atmospheric shimmer of "keep it to yourself" only just hinting at the sympathetic subtext underneath her harsh words. but the lyrics are the center of it all -- there's nothing about the sound that's inherently new or exciting or hip, but it works so well for me.

I guess you can interpret it as being about weed: "It's hi-i-i-i-i-gh time / to slow my roll" ha ha, but it's a pretty ballad that I hope makes the cut for her next album.

Driver 8, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 21:49 (ten years ago) link

There are live videos from a few years back of her performing an early, shaky tune that’s nonetheless saved by its refrain: “I’m not good at being careful, I just say what’s on my mind/ My idea of heaven is to burn one with John Prine.”

Matt DC, Friday, 29 November 2013 11:59 (ten years ago) link

Absolutely. She's the most likeable pop star around. That's the genius of Follow Your Arrow for me - subversive (in country music terms) sentiments delivered in the most winningly casual way, with nothing strident or self-congratulatory about it. I played it to a class I was teaching about protest songs the other day and they were all instantly won over. The "whor……ible person" line does it every time.

I heard part of an interview with Linda Ronstadt yesterday. In it, she recalled the first time hearing Emmylou Harris, being in almost total awe, and having to decide, split decision: would I rather be her friend or be her rival? She chose friend, and it benefited them both. Which is a sideways way of saying how glad I am that this particular group of writers and singers, the dudes (mostly writers) and the girls, are so in sync. Musgraves, Clarke, Monroe, Lambert ... It's amounting to a real satisfying body of work accumulated over a short time. When is Angaleena Presley releasing a record?

any guesses as to which would be the biggest vote-getter in 2013 polls, 'merry go round' or 'smoke' or 'arrow'?

j., Saturday, 21 December 2013 22:39 (ten years ago) link

last December I first heard "Merry Go Round" in the radio while driving through Nashville. today I heard on the same station again driving through, but this year the dj was effusive about her accomplishments this year. very cool year!

Euler, Saturday, 21 December 2013 22:53 (ten years ago) link

arrow was around longer and made the rounds on the awards show, so i'd guess that.

no, i think 'merry go round' was around longer - technically a 2012 single - and was nommed for awards etc., but 'arrow' is fresher, maybe more prone to attract votes?

j., Saturday, 21 December 2013 23:14 (ten years ago) link

my guess is that "blowin' smoke" will be mostly neglected, with "merry go 'round" and "follow your arrow" sharing the attention.

if we're talking pazz & jop, it's worth noting that "merry go 'round" already placed there last year (25th). i am guessing, since many didn't hear the song until she started getting lots of press in 2013 (i myself didn't hear the song until it was peaking at radio -- maybe january?), that it'll get votes this year as well. p&j does that thing where it includes a song's votes from the previous year if the number of new votes is great enough (i think at least ~half the previous total), so if that happens it could place again, presumably higher.

dyl, Sunday, 22 December 2013 00:35 (ten years ago) link

yes, that was my reason for wondering about the probable numbers

it's the song "gravy" that she has performed live over the past while. unless she has rewritten the song to be different from how it sounded in live performance i honestly don't really like it, it's clearly meant to be a less lyrically 'controversial' "follow your arrow" and some of the similarities in melody and progression are so blatant as to be distracting

"Follow Your Arrow" sounded facile and pat -- lyrically and melodically. This is better (e.g. the banjo and pedal steel solos), but it plays as if the songwriters were so in love with the title concept that they failed to imagine an accompanying song.

It's closer to "Step Off' than "Follow Your Arrow" IMO, though all that really means is that "mind your own business" is a recurrent lyrical motif for Kacey.

Musically/arrangement-wise it's not really much like either (or anything else from the debut).

OK, I've given it a quick listen and yeah, sometimes trite isn't far off the mark. It's also a little too ... gentle? Safe? A little too campfire on the beach? But her vocals/melodies are fine, and it's got a nice, chill vibe all the same. I look forward to spending some quality time with it.

"Musgraves’ already-trademark brand of kitschy, catchy country tunes"

the thing with this album is that it feels like she's getting into the box that's been created for her; even its better songs feel like pandering, to an extent

ugh @ all of this

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 29 May 2015 09:01 (eight years ago) link

I like how "Biscuits" is basically the same song, but different. When I saw her play it live, for some reason I didn't think of "Arrow." And when she did "High Time" live, I definitely got the Hawaii vibe, too, which is one reason why I described the feel of the album as kind of beachy. That could potentially position it for a summer crossover, but it's so mellow and not rock the boat that it sort of smooths itself into a corner. Again, not bad, often lovely, lots to like, sounds like her, just not assertive enough to make an impression other than the fact that it doesn't make much of an impression. That is disappointing, even if little on the record is objectively sub-par.

Will I curse things if I concede I've got high hopes for the new Ashley Monroe?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 May 2015 12:02 (eight years ago) link

OMG, I was playing the album for my wife, who is a HUGE fan of the last album - like, a weekly listener - and she mentioned this morning that "one of the new songs is the same as one of the old songs, just with different lyrics!" She meant is as a complement, actually.

OK, this hit the spot a bit better tonight (thanks, beer!), but I think the problem is not really that it's trite but that its production choices and arrangements are too timid. By choice, sure - she made the decision - but it hurts the album, imo. There's only one outright stinker, "Late to the Party" (which sounds like Norah Jones covering "Tears In Heaven") but the rest are pretty solid songs crying for a little more oomph and diversity.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 15 June 2015 14:51 (eight years ago) link

it's so sweet!

anyway

Will I curse things if I concede I've got high hopes for the new Ashley Monroe?

i also have high hopes, the title track is incredible

imo the weakest song here is the title track and it's still pretty charming. i would suggest the album is maybe compromised by her writing from a more general perspective but the most egregious example of this, "somebody to love," is completely gorgeous and precise, so lol

precision is what this album really lacks to me, i hear her singing about cardboard characters and simplistic archetypes (of places as well as people) and hardly any of the nuance that made STDP so special. it sounds like an album made by someone who knows that the mainstream know her via katy perry. sort of disappointed by how low it aims, mostly: lots of easy-to-hum songs, hardly any easy-to-love songs. "good ol boys club" and "fine" are slightly better i guess

lex pretend, Monday, 15 June 2015 15:34 (eight years ago) link

lol y'all made this sound like 13 "follow your arrow"s in a row and maybe that's why i'm surprised by how vivid and effective it is

anyway it sounds like an album made by someone who knows that the mainstream know her via katy perry is not what i get from this record at all and is really uh :\

even the more intimate songs are trite though, almost every song follows the same formula, i don't hear anything vivid here

lex pretend, Monday, 15 June 2015 15:48 (eight years ago) link

and SO MUCH peppy repetition where STDP had so many lines that surprised me or undercut what had gone before or took the song in a different direction...like i feel you pretty much know where every song on this album is going from its title and first line

lex pretend, Monday, 15 June 2015 15:51 (eight years ago) link

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:30 (eight years ago) link

it doesn't sound like same trailer. the arrangements are way more relaxed

Song for song, it's catchier and richer than ST. Like lex, I have a problem with how on the nose these songs are, how she (sill) relies on the cutes. "Cup of Tea" is the nadir. It’s 2016, rural America’s changing, and changing fast enough so that Musgraves can be less indebted to a wink-wink conceit.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:49 (eight years ago) link

*still

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 19:50 (eight years ago) link

one-listen take: i am quite relieved that this is nowhere near as bad or predictable as i had feared it would be from "biscuits," which may be the worst cut on the album other than maybe "cup of tea." i haven't been unusually struck by any of its lyrics the way i was on hearing same trailer for the first time, but the songs are still quite a pleasant listen and many of its arrangements are gorgeous. yeah, i probably won't like it as much as same trailer in the end (which is kind of a high bar anyway), but it's certainly not enough of a step down for me to be disappointed either.

the two bad songs i mentioned aside i was also way off the mark in thinking that the album would just be a bunch of safe retreads. yeah lyrically she does sometimes rely on some of the same tricks which is getting eyeroll-inducing/tiresome but idk, otherwise (esp. sonically) she's definitely venturing somewhere new for her. whether others have done better in similar territory is another story (obv they have) but it still sounds good so i find it hard to complain ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i do think it *sounds* different from stdp. it's not necessarily 'better' in that regard (maybe some parts of certain tracks are), since stdp was also quite gorgeous, but it certainly stands out more than the songwriting this time around.

dyl, Tuesday, 30 June 2015 21:16 (eight years ago) link

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 30 June 2015 21:22 (eight years ago) link

i don't think it sounds radically different, but definitely smoother and more polished across the board. Just faultlessly even-keeled to a ... fault. Like I said earlier, I think the production is what hurts the songs. Many of the tracks on this album would have been better served with different arrangements and different sounds.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 30 June 2015 21:41 (eight years ago) link

So after about five or six listens, I can stand behind "This Town" and "Miserable" and to a lesser degree "Biscuits" , "High Time" and "Fine/whatever the willie duet is called". The rest feels sing-songy and formulaic to me and not especially worth returning to. Spectacular production, as noted above, but so glossy that it often slips out of my hands.

A quick peek at the song credits suggest that what i like best about this album is where brandy clark put hands on, so maybe i just need to wait for her follow up album.

Love this album. Production is beautiful and I find her presence endlessly likeable and reassuring. Agree with those who say the Follow Your Arrow-a-like homilies are the weak spots.

impossible raver (Re-Make/Re-Model), Thursday, 3 September 2015 10:01 (eight years ago) link

I finally listened to this yesterday. It does sound great, and I love the steel guitar playing in particular. The album pushes the boundaries of what I think Hawaiian country music would sound like, like Elvis on "Beyond the Reef".

I do not like the homilies, though, and that's most of the songs, no? So many songs written in the second person (or is it imperative tense?): but addressed to "you"---though I guess "Keep It To Yourself" is written that way too, and that's my favorite on the debut. This album has almost no love songs, really just "Late to the Party", and very little intimate writing: nothing like "It Is What It Is", "Back On The Map", "Keep It To Yourself". I like "Die Fun" and "Fine". But I hope she'll turn her songwriting a bit more inward on the next album, since she's shown us already how keen her voice is when aimed there.

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 3 September 2015 10:45 (eight years ago) link

"Late to the Party" is one of the better cuts, although it has a little of that bland NPR pop-folkiness that hurts some of this latest effort. She also climbs up the scales vocally a bit on that track in a pretty manner, while on many others is stuck in a similiar intonation/perky pop-folk narrow range.

"Late to the Party" sounded great live earlier tonight. "Die Fun" was nice. The 2nd album cuts sounded better live. The steel guitar and Hawaiian guitar touches from the band worked well too. She also did "No Scrubs," "These Boots Are made for Walkin'" (while wearing light-up go-go boots backed by her band in suits with flashing lights on them

I enjoyed the show. They closed with an a cappella "Happy Trails". She urged the fans to call country radio to get her airtime. She also proclaimed her joy that she was in DC the day the Supreme Court issued its gay marriage ruling.

saw her open for Willie Nelson on Saturday. Her band is great, most of the material was great, and then there were a couple groaners (wtf is that "mind Your Own Biscuits/and live will be gravy" song ugh). She did "Rhinestone Cowboy" as a tribute to Glenn, which was cool. Also laughed when she said where she was from, a bunch of people hooted/clapped, and then she responded "I dunno what you're clapping for, that place sucks shit"

IIRC, I read somewhere that outside of a few numbers she didn't really get to sit and write much new stuff for Pageant Material, so many of the songs on it were unrecorded ST,DP leftovers.

http://ew.com/music/2017/12/12/kacey-musgraves-golden-hour-new-album-interview/

For the upcoming Golden Hour, due in early 2018, following her heart meant trying out new styles as well as writing some of the most honest and genuine tunes of her career. Though she once expressed interest in making a reggae or surf-rock album next, Musgraves describes her new LP as having a “trippy” twist, citing the Bee Gees, Sade, and Neil Young as influences. And while she’s often celebrated for her clever wordplay and witty turns of phrase about small-town life, Musgraves says she avoided wrapping every lyric “up in a little bow” in favor of more direct, reflective songwriting.

Damn, Alf wasn't kidding: http://www.punchland.com/?post_type=post&p=89081

Part of that new approach was inspired by country star Kacey Musgraves, apparently. “I went with Ariel to see Kacey Musgraves at the Greek Theater in LA [in September 2016],” he says. “The thing I loved about it was it wasn’t too loud — I’m definitely becoming a cranky old man — so I could really hear every word. The music was really clear and her voice was really clear. I’m the type of person who has spent hours poring over the avant-garde poetic lyrics of certain songwriters, and there was something that felt so good [about how] from the first verse, you knew who was singing, who they were singing to, what kind of situation they were in. After the show I realized there’s not a ton of Vampire Weekend songs where you could listen to the first verse and immediately answer the question of who’s singing and who are they singing to.”

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 February 2018 08:52 (six years ago) link

First two songs are excellent and showcase everything I love about her - clever, playful, and imaginative, and man can she write a hook. Her melodies have always stood out.

Worth noting that her supporting cast has changed a lot. Every song on the first two albums (with the exception of the Willie Nelson cover) were cowritten and produced by some combination of Josh Osborne, Shane McAnally, Luke Laird, Brandy Clark, and/or Natalie Hemby. And there were a lot of other talented people in the room - Misa Arriaga (who seems to have split with her romantically & professionally), Charlie Worsham, Kree Harrison...

From what I can tell she's mostly collaborating with a new team, and a lot of her band has changed.

Interestingly, both of the two lead singles (and Velvet Elvis) were cowritten with the McAnally/Laird/Hemby, so I'm interested to see if the rest of the album holds up.

Simon H., Tuesday, 6 March 2018 20:52 (six years ago) link

I'm mildly anticipating it. I liked the debut, but she's the least interesting singer and writer of the Miranda Lambert Pack; certainly she's the pick for those who think Lambert, Ashley Monroe, Brandy Clark, etc are too country.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 20:54 (six years ago) link

niels, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 21:18 (six years ago) link

i wasn't gonna go there but i don't find brandy clark particularly too country, she has a very dance-y/pop hits sound

F# A# (∞), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 21:24 (six years ago) link

Yeah KM is also the pick for those for who love country music but whose tastes run more to KM than Miranda Lambert or whoever - that's just the way taste runs. If Kacey also appeals to people who aren't that interested in country, that's cool with me.

Tim, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 21:59 (six years ago) link

I think Kacey is pretty country, at least as much as Monroe/Lambert/etc., all of whom have been pushing at the boundaries of pop and rock in imo more aggressive ways than the more chill Musgraves.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:01 (six years ago) link

I think so too - tbf Alfred didn't say she wasn't, Alfred said KM was the pick for people who found Brandy Clark and so on too country - I am guessing Alfred knows or reads such people and isn't strawmanning on some authenticity-is-better kick, because that's not really his game AFAICT.

Tim, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:07 (six years ago) link

Authenticity? Moi? I'm wearing Target boat shoes.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:15 (six years ago) link

Musgraves is Western swingier than the others, none of whom have been Austinites to my knowledge, and has alt/pop aspirations, but not sure why those are necessarily any less country/traditional than Lambert's rock tendencies or Monroe/Presley/Clark's sometimes-countrypolitan, which can sound particularly folky in Clark's non-Southern voice.

Moo Vaughn, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 01:02 (six years ago) link

If we must rank, then I do prefer Monroe and Lambert a little bit (for different reasons) (Clark and Presley a little less - though I loved Wrangled from last year), but I think there's a risk of acting like all of these performers are doing the same thing, or focusing on the surface level stylistic differences rather than some of the more subtle differences between them. The biggest reason I can imagine someone loving Musgraves most of all is that (at least on STDP) she is arguably the tightest songwriter of the five, there's a "just so" elegance to tunes like "I Miss You" that really stands out to me at least; some listeners might dislike that of course, but it doesn't really map onto a more/less country continuum IMO.

(although based on the above-cited comment from Kacey about resisting wrapping up every lyric "in a little bow" this may actually be less true of her forthcoming album)

Tim F, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 01:38 (six years ago) link

oooh Like a Rose is as tight if not tighter, I think.

IT's not that they're doing the same thing necessarily; they share songwriters and producers, though, which means a certain aesthetic concordance. Tom Petty and George Harrison and Roy Orbison were vastly different performers and songwriters, but Jeff Lynne's production made them sound like brothers, or at least Wilburys.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 01:51 (six years ago) link

yeah there’s some obvious stunners on here — slow burn, lonely weekend, oh what a world, space cowboy, wonder woman, rainbow for me — but i think what makes the album is that even on the songs where the lyrics or concept drag a bit (happy & sad and golden hour i think) the melodies and production are so richly textured that there’s still a lot to grab onto, and then eventually you kinda warm up to the songwriting the more you sit with the album

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 30 March 2018 21:22 (six years ago) link

I gave this a once-through today and it was nice. Nicer than I remember her other records being, anyway. And then I got stuck on "Rainbow" at the end of the album because there's part of the chorus melody that's a direct rip from Survivor's "The Search Is Over" and that made me ridiculously happy.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 30 March 2018 21:23 (six years ago) link

I'm really blown away by this album, the songs are great and the production is truly perfect, so rich and gorgeous and airy. one of the best sounding albums I've ever heard

niels, Sunday, 1 April 2018 11:42 (six years ago) link

the tempos alongside the beats connect this album to pop r&b to me: like, you could go from "I Feel It Coming" to "Oh, What A World" on the radio & it would sound natural. It's a different way to link to pop than like Luke Bryan where it's his singing that has rap cadences. Here Musgraves sings like she's always done but the beats make it sound like Miguel. I'd love to see those two tour together.

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 2 April 2018 13:06 (six years ago) link

I'm not feeling this album much at all. It sounds canned, a buncha expensive demos with little evidence of a band approach (I couldn't figure out until I got to the guitar solo in "Velvet Elvis" – I was relieved!). Musgraves' vocals get monotonous after a while – not much variety.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 April 2018 13:11 (six years ago) link

oh well. on first listen I think it's delightful.

I like hearing how country artists going pop these days keep the banjos as a mark that this is country. Swift did this until 1989. This album is more like Fearless than Speak Now in terms of its progression outside of country. I'd like this to be a pop hit but being a country hit seems likely to me.

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 2 April 2018 13:15 (six years ago) link

Swift did this until 1989.

This has been pretty par for the course since peak country pop c. Garth Brooks and Shania Twain, who lest one forget released three different versions of "Up!' in 2002, one "country," one "pop" and one "international."

its weird that it wasn't really there for her less-good last album lol but also makes a lot of sense, im super tired of the jaded knowingness of ppl with no taste though

ppl say its a new carly rae jepsen unless it takes off, thing to me is this is much better than carly, i mean you could easily have said that about the second rae sremmurd when it first dropped, shit didn't do well sales-wise until black beatles took off virally a few months later

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 2 April 2018 22:31 (six years ago) link

plenty of ppl openly talked about how they were somewhat disappointed by her last album

idk why the carly comparisons are coming up, silly meme she tweeted aside. is p4k reviewing the album the tipping point into this territory?

dyl, Monday, 2 April 2018 23:30 (six years ago) link

she doesn't have a 'hit' like she did on the first album, but its not like that radio hit was 'call me maybe' lol ppl always liked her as an album artist

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 2 April 2018 23:34 (six years ago) link

re deej: in order for there to be backlash, there needs to be a coherent media/hype narrative of "this is capital-Q Quality" to backlash against. that just wasn't there for pageant material, which everyone seemed to implicitly agree was good but not tastemaker crossover/premature "is this a classic?"-level good.

austinb, Monday, 2 April 2018 23:50 (six years ago) link

sure. but it also shows the irony of a 'backlash' which is that its less about quality than abt people's annoyance with the behavior of their peers lol

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 2 April 2018 23:53 (six years ago) link

i don't disagree with that. my main takeaway from backlash culture is that it indicates a protectiveness concerning genre artists who make Very Good albums, and the tendency to then describe those artists as somehow "above" or apart from the genre they emerge from.

austinb, Monday, 2 April 2018 23:58 (six years ago) link

yeah thats dumb as hell, i think there's a reason i like kacey but dont spend a lot of time on country typically, but i def don't think its that she's better at country as much as she's better at things i like in pop songwriting

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 00:08 (six years ago) link

which is a totally valid reason! but also a distinction that a lot of ppl don't make, and one that kacey honestly has kinda dragged herself into, considering her twitter's been retweeting a bunch of the "i hate country -> new kacey comes on holy shit" memes as of late

austinb, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 00:13 (six years ago) link

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 00:24 (six years ago) link

She's been doing a lot of woodshedding as an opening act, from the usual country pop suspects to Katy Perry. I assume she took advantage of the range of audiences to test out her new stuff, to see where she wants to go. I can't imagine her a standard issue huge country star, but I'm not exactly sure where she's going, either.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 01:19 (six years ago) link

this is a good album, and not that it matters but it sounds the least country out of all her releases to my ears

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 13:20 (six years ago) link

Honestly that's the only thing about her that bugs me a little, too many weed songs and jokes. I think it's a shame that at this point when you say "Willie Nelson" the first thing most people think of is "weed," and not "incredible singer/songwriter/guitarist." She sorta similarly has too much going for her to typecast herself with the weed cliches.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 13:38 (six years ago) link

Like, Bob Dylan, one of the greatest of all time, does "Rainy Day Women," and the stoner punchline follows him around for the rest of his career. Or Tom Petty, with "You Don't Know How It Feels." As if every single rock/country/rap/whatever act is not smoking pot all the time anyway.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 13:41 (six years ago) link

i understand why it might be offputting -- but one might say she is normalizing (norml-izing haha) weed use for women? (bob dylan, willie nelson, and tom petty are men)

It comes down to my aversion to her voice and the singer-songwriter staidness of the arrangements, despite the vocoders and disco-lite filigrees. The Brandy Clark album from two years ago does a lot better with similar attempts to send electrical shockers through the material.

dyl, Thursday, 5 April 2018 02:12 (six years ago) link

no never, i just read she had been a country singer or something.

piscesx, Thursday, 5 April 2018 02:56 (six years ago) link

i gave this a proper second listen

there's a cluster of three tracks that are just amazing

mother
love is a wild thing
space cowboy

happy & sad is potentially a great track as well, which would make that four great tracks back to back, but it might be a grower

i'm a sucker for piano tracks so rainbow is a very nice outro

also what's the problem with smoking weed? she seems/sounds chill and would be cool to hang with

best track has to be love is a wild thing, though -- those keys after the music stops (at 2:56) reminds me a lot of future islands for some reason

stylistically it is a lot more varied than her previous albums i want to say, as well

I feel like she didn't write these songs for her own voice... she keeps reaching for high notes that don't seem to suit her range.

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 01:24 (six years ago) link

our reactions to 'slow burn':

me: 'this has a really stunning arrangement but i wish it changed up the basic bliss-out chord-sequence a bit more, we've heard it a zillion times'

tt: 'why not hear it another?'

it does modulate the third chord of the sequence nicely i guess

imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 09:33 (six years ago) link

Oh come on that chord change in Slow Burn is amazing and completely elevates the entire song, I could hear it again and again for much longer than the song lasts.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 09:49 (six years ago) link

Fair enough.

Butterflies is really lovely too. More as we get it

imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:13 (six years ago) link

What I don't get is how Beck's Sea Change can get such a (wrongful) kicking in the recent poll of his albums, and yet this is widely lauded - they occupy a similar sonic space and vibe to me (this is more pop, and less orchestrated, obv)

I know this is one of my insane comparisons and Completely Rong etc but I can't shake it. It's a positive comparison at least!

Wonder Woman is another good song. High Horse less so

imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:28 (six years ago) link

Rainbow might be better if another high-profile female US popstar hadn't put out a piano ballad called, uh, Rainbow just a year ago, and it be quite a bit better than this. You played yourself Kacey!

That aside (and High Horse), this is a solid album with a couple of grand highlights

the production on this is incredible, one of the best-sounding albums i've heard in awhile. i've been listening to this more than anything else lately, along w/Ashley Monroe's Sparrow. my favorite remains Love Is A Wild Thing, but the title track is up there maybe bc it was also one of the songs she performed when I saw her live opening for Willie Nelson last year and it caught my attention more than anything else in her already-impressive set. Well you can search and find the Rolling Stone interview and others where she describes acid as a great drug for artists because it’s humbling, and how she was tripping on LSD and feeling far from her mother who coincidentally texted her right then, leading to her writing the song. So “lysergic” not exactly misleading. She also says that she loved the last Tame Impala and wanted to bring some of that sound to country.

yeah it's hard for me to imagine the album with more powerful/commanding vocals? i do think that something like "rainbow" also really benefits from a certain narrowness of range. the whole album is just sort of meditative, even the real emotional moments

flopson, Thursday, 4 October 2018 23:35 (five years ago) link

I would rank :
1/ Pageant Material : great songs, melodies, lyrics , production
2/ Golden Hour : amazing production and arrangements, fantastic melodies but the lyrics are a bit impersonal/generic love songs(and less fun)
3/ Same Trailer Different Park : very nice songs, cute/clever lyrics, great first album
And I love her voice. It's strong and emotional.

I really love the debut, hated that Mind Your Own Biscuits song so much I never got Pageant Material, and her recent singles' Dolly-goes-disco steez I appreciate in theory but it's not really the kind of thing that plays to her strengths imo.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:28 (five years ago) link

i liked pageant material a lot at the time -- i listened to it again earlier this year and i still see the charm in it but it's seems clearly her third best album to me. i still appreciate it tho bcuz she was mining a very specific set of her influences. but the songs on "same trailer" are more clever and from a production/songwriting standpoint golden hour is like, in another strata

J0rdan S., Friday, 5 October 2018 18:47 (five years ago) link

when she hits the chorus on "Golden Hour" it's the most blissful thing imo

omar little, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:52 (five years ago) link

Basically, I simply like her work a lot, mostly the 2nd and latest albums (I like the 1st one but less).
I don’t really understand how one can love the 1st one and hate the 2nd one (or vice versa) though... they’re so close !
The 3rd one is something else : less country, more mainstream pop, so I can understand how one could like it but dislike her previous output.

Ok after the eoy singles poll I gave a chance to Golden Hour and I’m in. The production on this is so good, everything sounds so warm and perfect, how did they make the acoustic guitars sound this good? It’s insane.

I’ve read many comparisons but one I’ve yet to read and the one it reminds me the most is Aimee Mann, particularly “lost in space” but you know, less engineered.

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 August 2021 14:31 (two years ago) link

I don't even know what "channeling Jackson Browne" means, though in the case of Jackson Browne it generally means "makes me not want to listen to more than a few songs out of several decades of recorded output."

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 31 August 2021 17:40 (two years ago) link

this is a weird album, unfortunately not a masterpiece like golden hour

there's some really good stuff but also lots of tracks that are just ok. despite the shift towards more pop-influenced textures there isn't anything close to a "high horse" attempt at a pop hit, and it's generally strongest when sticking to her roots. "if this was a movie" also has lovely ray of light-vibes, wish there was more of that

ufo, Thursday, 9 September 2021 22:54 (two years ago) link

i like "justified" a lot -- i think there is a simplicity in the chorus lyrics in a way that hits extremely similar things to i.e. "happy & sad" that made me long for her bow-wrapped songs of yore but the melody actually stuck w/ me. i'm prepared to like this more than the reviews are indicating, tho i think she's prob bound to snap back a bit in terms of songwriting and i am looking forward to that. i've listened to golden hour several times recently and it's such a perfect lightning strike of an album that comparing anything else to it just seems kinda unfair

J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 September 2021 22:58 (two years ago) link

a talented ‘Rebel’ with Balls (Spottie), Friday, 10 September 2021 06:08 (two years ago) link

Hum yeah I’m just finishing listening to it and… it’s not very good unfortunately.
It lacks the things that she’s usually so good at : smart, witty, charming lyrics and great melodic hooks.
There’s not a line or a hook that has left a mark on me.
I’ll listen again and may change my mind but so far it feels like her weakest album.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 10 September 2021 07:39 (two years ago) link

wish there were more moments like the flute solo on "there is a light"

"simple times" is the worst track on the album, really stilted melodically & has all of this album's flaws in one place

ufo, Friday, 10 September 2021 08:07 (two years ago) link

I had high hopes for "there is a light" as it starts well and sounds lusher than the rest but it doesn't really take off and the arrangement may be a bit silly by the end (including the flute !).
But I don't remember exactly so I'll have to listen to it again since it seems like the most ambitious track of the album.
The rest all seem to end before doing anything (and usually I'm all for short tracks !).
For instance "cherry blossom" is the same melody/lines "cherry blossom/tokyo" round and round without the melody being strong enough to carry it... during 2min.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 10 September 2021 08:18 (two years ago) link

yeah the songwriting is just never anywhere near as strong as her previous work, either melodically or lyrically

ufo, Friday, 10 September 2021 08:23 (two years ago) link

I haven't given it a listen yet, but I suspect this is another example of a what can happen when a breakthrough record suddenly earns someone a big new audience but also expectations that never really existed before. I kind if wish it was released without all the hoopla newfound attention brings, too. They're playing up the press-release "a story in three-acts" thing big-time, which is bad enough, but also it kind of irks me (just on a personal level) that this is being marketed as a divorce album specifically and not just another breakup album. Not only was she married for just two years, I honestly didn't even know she *was* married. And the end of a two-year marriage with no kids just seems ... I don't know, kind of small potatoes in the grand scheme of the last few years. Or maybe the likes of Laird and McAnally are just better at getting good stuff out of her than the new team?

Listening to both albums this morning, I wondered what Musgraves might've done with the new Low songs and vice versa.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 September 2021 12:46 (two years ago) link

xp it does really lean into the divorce angle a few times lyrically so i understand that marketing angle. the three-act thing is even on the back cover but it's pretty loose in actuality

i don't think it's that the songwriting team is any worse than before - it's the same team that co-wrote most of golden hour & produced all of it, but they've pushed even further outside their country comfort zone this time with more awkward results. most of the songs feel like solid starting points that could have been fleshed out further into something great, but just weren't.

ufo, Friday, 10 September 2021 12:52 (two years ago) link

This is much better than I expected. Reminds me conceptually, but also certain places musically, of Ray of Light.

btw I'm not a Musgraves fan other than of the debut I rarely play, and I'm not hearing much difference between the wan tunefulness of Golden Hour and this one.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 September 2021 13:56 (two years ago) link

there are songs that are pretty melodically reminiscent of golden hour, like "cherry blossom" and "if this was a movie", but golden hour really lets its songs breathe, while as aixtc said, the tracks on this one largely end before doing anything. like, "cherry blossom" could surely use a bridge to elevate it etc. instead of just looping the chorus for two minutes

To me, her previous work had such strong songwriting displaying her gift for great melodies and hooks (for instance "Butterflies" is marvelous) that this one is disappointing.
It's not bad but, yeah, the melodies don't... blossom !

Apologies and noted!

Seems like some of the criticism I've read has focused on the lyrics being too plain, lacking in the witty double-entendres and playful cliches she's deployed across her work. The cosmic, sunbathed, iridescent sound of Golden Hour was also innovative and fresh and felt like a new space for both pop and country...I don't think this is different in kind but clearly "radiance" was not what they were going for on her divorce record.

Personally, while I truly adore those first three records, I found the cute cliches were wearing thin with writers like Musgraves, Luke Laird, Shane McAnally, and Brandy Clark leaning into them too often. I like how writers like Emily Scott Robinson and Katie Pruitt are writing searing personal stories with plain spoken words from distinct POVs and was hoping to hear more Kacey in this record. Going to have to give it another spin but the melodies seemed perfectly strong to me...

ufo, Friday, 10 September 2021 21:29 (two years ago) link

the first 4 songs leave me pretty cold but this really kicks into gear right around "justified". "breadwinner" in particular is awesome -- it's really the inverse of "high horse" in that she's on her's but also bcuz the production feels organic and detailed as opposed to sounding like she opened up a 99 cent can of something labeled "disco." from "camera roll" on i think the songs start to map along the contours of her past music in a way that feels familiar and comfortable. "easier said" and "hookup scene" have an ease of motion between sections that feels trademark her even if the arrangements and lyrics are going somewhere new, a bit more broad.

that initial section it feels like they're spinning their wheels in terms of the production but as the album goes on it does take on a distinct form that is different from golden hour imo, it's more layered, a bit knottier, but also i think they got better at what they're trying to do in several places. "breadwinner" and "there is a light" (practically a todd terje song!) stand out as tracks that actually make golden hour feel like a prelude to something richer, which i didn't think was going to be possible going into this album.

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 September 2021 23:10 (two years ago) link

there's a tiny bit of the flute solo in "there is a light" that sounds like it's referencing the flute riff in "down under". thankfully not the part they got sued over though, hope men at work don't sue her either.

ufo, Friday, 10 September 2021 23:41 (two years ago) link

i want to be clear that i do quite like this album, just have probably been a little harsh bc it's following up a masterpiece & there's so many ways this one could have been much greater instead of just merely good. i really miss the bridges & instrumental breaks that gave the songs on golden hour more room to breathe & more of that would have fit so well with the vibe she's going for here. "there is a light" is one of the few moments where it really goes for that & it's a real highlight as a result. "good wife", "if this was a movie", "angel", "camera roll", "easier said" and "hookup scene" are all really good too.

i still really dislike "simple times" though it's so plodding & stilted it makes me think of weezer at their most mediocre

I honestly didn't even know she *was* married

for whatever it's worth, her ex's last two albums are *excellent* if you have any interest in hooky Americana/rock songs about being a major fuck-up and feeling bad about being a major fuck-up and trying to move past being a major fuck-up. both are among my most-played albums of the past few years:

Dying Star (2018): http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_myPyJ2Mth_R-_RXKOgIfs3OHYnkA_CCn8

alpine static, Saturday, 11 September 2021 18:28 (two years ago) link

Cool, will listen! I should have expected better of Musgraves, but I just figured he was some bro-country Blake Shelton type or something. Of course, now she us dating some marketer/model/influencer or something, right? That's a business card I can't get behind.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 11 September 2021 18:35 (two years ago) link

He's definitely not bro-country. He's also not exactly endearing in a warm and fuzzy cutesy faux-indie Kacey Musgraves sort of way. He seems like he's been through some tough stuff and he has a chip on his shoulder.

He may not be for you, of course. I just think he's got a lot of great melodic ideas and his lyrics are good enough for me.

The first half of Dying Star is particularly strong, imo. Shape & Destroy doesn't reach quite the same heights, but is more consistent.

On the latter in particular, you can hear his love of punk and emo coming through loud and clear in places. And in between the albums, he released an EP of covers: Dashboard, Saves the Day, Blink-182, "Teenage Dirtbag" ... and he did a good (faithful) job w/ Taylor's "All Too Well" ... they're all in this playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1byb4iuVdwKBZcinPCnjaOwL8ENS5GS3

akm, Saturday, 11 September 2021 22:08 (two years ago) link

So I was right about "Justified," I was happy for it to show up in the run of the album. That chorus is a kicker. I like the album overall, I would love for it to be more space disco. Maybe there will be remixes.

Finally listening to this, it's ... fine. I think "Camera Roll" (playing now) is the only that's kind of clicked with me so far. I agree the songs sounds too weirdly underdeveloped. I think it intriguing that Alfred brought up Low, because those songs on the new album are super spare and simple yet the group found novel ways to expand them and make them interesting. Here it all feels kind of abrupt.

Anyway, my wife's hot take (especially after meh reactions to Waxahatchee and Faye Webster yesterday): "why does everyone have to be so quiet and boring?"

BTW, my fave overlooked country break-up album is Allison Moorer's "The Hardest Part."

"Easier Said" feels like an instant modern standard in the same way "Butterflies" did by the second listen.

This is an extremely rare case where an artist's preceding album hit me so hard (after already deeply enjoying her first two albums) that I fully expected this one to be a letdown on some level. Aside from the opening track being the weakest, damn near everything here is astounding: the crystalline production (the guitars!), brief earwormy snippets (e.g. the spoken refrain in "There is a Light"), evocative yet more universal lyricism (anyone else enjoy contrasting the Beijing line in "Slow Burn" to the Tokyo reference in "Cherry Blossom"?), thematic consistency/the genuinely earned sense of melancholy, & her incomparably godhead voice.

Was odd seeing her interviewed by Stephen Colbert on Thursday only b/c she didn't play a song afterward. She was charming like always though. Doubt that playing the title track at the VMAs earned her the new fans she deserves. And it doesn't look like her winter tour is selling well, but playing NBA arenas was probably a bit of a reach. So it goes.

Anyone pick it up on vinyl yet? Releasing it on four different colors is silly. Nonetheless, hoping to grab a copy tomorrow.

Wally P. Doyle, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 05:24 (two years ago) link

My anecdotal take is that one's reaction to this one is directly related to one's reaction to the last one. If someone thought Golden Hour was the Best Album Ever, they will probably love this as more of the same. If they thought Golden Hour was a step down (or away) from the first two, then they may not like this one that much, either. I wonder if this fits with the first album theory, that one's take on an act often depends on which album in the discography they heard first?

it doesn't look like her winter tour is selling well

You mean because they haven't instantly sold out? Could also be because she is charging superstar prices, $150 (plus fees) for modest seats in an arena (even more for better). Could also be covid, but it's probably the big leap up in venue size plus the high price.

I dunno, I got the feeling the album received a ton of love and was at least considered by many to be a breakthrough, minting a bunch of Kacey Musgraves fans that weren't necessarily there for the first albums, winning the Grammy for Album of the Year, made her a style icon and/or star, etc. I assume it's why she is touring arenas and not clubs (or even theatres). Last place I saw her was behind Pageant Material, and it was ... 1500 seats?

She played the Chicago Theatre in March 2019. I totally forgot she was a Lollapalooza headliner that summer. Regardless, ever since bands like the Arcade Fire and Black Keys and Bon Iver started playing the United Center I have no idea what even constitutes an arena act anymore.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 15:20 (two years ago) link

That's nuts. Seen her a few times and don't think I ever paid more than $30, albeit pre-Golden Hour.

Indexed, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 15:43 (two years ago) link

I mean ... she's probably 5X bigger now than she was pre-Golden Hour. Maybe more.

$150 is obviously a lot for a ticket, but considering what some second- and third-tier acts charge in my city, I ain't even blinking at $70 (before fees) just to get in the room.

She's good enough, but (go figure) pretty chill. The first time I saw her, in a tiny club in 2013, she covered Weezer. Could not imagine her in an arena, but if I've learned anything over the years it's that good, bad or indifferent live, once a band clicks with a big block of fans they'll react to you like you're the Beatles no matter how you do on stage.

“butterflies” is kinda the skeleton key of sorts to golden hour for me in that it really should be a chintzy, grating song but there’s all these little production flourishes and an overall grace and lightness of touch throughout that make it not just tolerable but enjoyable for me. it’s still prob in the bottom 3 or 4 on the album if i was ranking but it’s the one i look at and say “i should hate this but they were so locked in that it really works”

Butterflies is a bright blissful moment and rather in the top 4-5 for me - if it makes any sense to rank songs here. I think it takes talent to make a song so simple and striking, and you really need the voice if you bring it in the spotlight with so light an instrumentation. A little bit like Newsom's having Easy and '81 to open HOOM.

I don't know folks, this started out mocking Kacey but now we're genuinely discussing Chipotle menu items. Somewhere out there is a VP of Marketing who deserves their bonus.

Here's some anti-marketing: Never go into a Chipotle after 7pm. It's bad news.

(*I semi-stole this observation from someone's tweet)

heterologous booster (morrisp), Wednesday, 17 November 2021 01:12 (two years ago) link

I forgot about this, but the very last time I went to the local Chipotle in Chicago, I saw this fly land in the chicken. I told someone working there, and she misunderstood and said, "oh, you want chicken?" and immediately stirred it up, essentially burying the fly in there. I was like "NO NO NO!" I tried explaining and even though they didn't understand, I managed to get them to remove the chicken tray. I didn't see them throw it away though, they did it with intense skepticism, so for all I know, they put it back after I left. I never went back because all I can think about after that was eating a burrito with a fly in it.

At least it wasn't a factory farmed fly...

Not a fan of multi-tracked vocals but it's a pretty tune and am relieved to hear a pivot back to acoustic guitars and cheeky, authentic lyrics.

I'm a little disappointed that there are only seven different LP editions.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 8 February 2024 17:54 (two months ago) link

not her anti-weed anthem! good song tho

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 February 2024 17:55 (two months ago) link

I like the text painting with the "I found a deeper well" melody descending and how the chorus transitions into those gentle instrumental passages. Rather understated for a lead (title track) single.

this is great. something about the directness of the lyrics mixed with the intricate, yet conversational melody is giving labi siffre? maybe i'm crazy

understated yet lush, very excited for the album now

Not bad.

To be greeted when I enter one of my favorite bars with "cherry blossom" annoys me.

this is more promising than the last album's singles for sure

ufo, Thursday, 8 February 2024 22:20 (two months ago) link

promising, and a reminder that Golden Hour is one of the best-sounding records in recent memory

alpine static, Thursday, 8 February 2024 22:32 (two months ago) link

it doesn't quite sound as good as golden hour (the multi-tracked vocal is a bit much here) but it's close yeah

ufo, Thursday, 8 February 2024 22:48 (two months ago) link

The multi-tracked vocals on the verse really bothers me. I've seen critics (Caramanica iirc?) call her voice "thin"; I think it's lovely, but this ain't helping.

Indexed, Friday, 9 February 2024 17:31 (two months ago) link

her voice *is* "thin", that doesn't mean she doesn't use it to good effect tho

'not bad' is my impression of this one. i thought her last album was fine.

pleasant enough golden hour-lite

ufo, Thursday, 29 February 2024 14:29 (one month ago) link

compressor on the vocals a bit aggressive vocal to my ears

but yes, otm

corrs unplugged, Friday, 1 March 2024 13:50 (one month ago) link

listening to the album it's actually less golden hour light and more a continuation of star-crossed

her songwriting more subtle, refined

more situations, less concepts

some 90s production vibes too, rnb notes

doesn't sound perfect to my ears, but sounds like something I'll be playing a lot

corrs unplugged, Friday, 15 March 2024 07:58 (one month ago) link

Very pretty, lovely harmonies throughout. I'm a sucker for some finger-picking and harmonies so this right up my alley. Except for the drums; kill all "lo-fi study beats" drums in music pls

H.P, Friday, 15 March 2024 08:27 (one month ago) link

On her softer / politer side, with pretty bland and lifeless arrangements, songs rather indistinguishable. Clearly I miss the pop.

Nabozo, Friday, 15 March 2024 10:00 (one month ago) link

this album is just ok. it's generally pretty but kinda uneven and i'm not really sure what it's aiming for with the production. it has a similar bag of effects lying around as golden hour, but it isn't at all deploying them towards golden hour's widescreen wonder and generally feels much smaller in ambition. it's never really bad but it's rarely that good either?

ufo, Friday, 15 March 2024 11:22 (one month ago) link

hell yeah folk rock kacey!

gundam wig (diamonddave85), Friday, 15 March 2024 15:57 (one month ago) link

This album is fine. It does not really rock at all. I wish she weren't so wistful daydream navel gazey "it's a new day" all the time, but that's the mode she's been in for a while now, I guess. Music for Walking in the Woods.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 16 March 2024 13:00 (one month ago) link

This album confirms that, really, she just bores me.

poppers fueled buttsex crescendo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 16 March 2024 13:33 (one month ago) link

Listened to the album a couple of times at work yesterday and it kept my interest a bit more than Star Crossed did, but it still seems way off the brilliance of Golden Hour. I'm not exactly feeling like I'm desperate to go in for another listen.

I seem to be having the same issue with a lot of the albums I was looking forward to this year. Ariana Grande, The Smile, Erika De Casier, Hurray For The Riff Raff, MGMT, Grandaddy and Faye Webster. None of these are terrible albums at all, I just haven't felt engaged with any of them.

kitchen person, Saturday, 16 March 2024 20:37 (one month ago) link

I'm bummed to be in agreement with so many people about this album's consistently pleasant but boring vibes. Hearing any one or two of these in isolation could be welcome but as a whole album, it's oddly monochromatic. I'm someone who thought Same Trailer... and Golden Hour were basically perfect (and the Christmas album too, frankly, for what it was). While I'm glad this album doesn't aim for the same strained conceptual framework as star-crossed, that album at least had the intrigue of someone dealing with personal collapse shortly after reaching their artistic and popular peak--it felt like a little more was at stake. Deeper Well on the whole suggests that she has newfound clarity about life but the music + production seems to prioritize politeness over anything that might approximate revelation or freedom.

It's also weirdly humorless. Kacey can be funny, both in previous music and in interviews and online...where is that person in these songs? I laughed when I opened the CD and the centerfold opens to a picture of her wearing an embroidered peasant dress surrounded by geese and the insert image on the fold-out liner notes is of her holding a chicken...at first I thought it was poking fun at the idea of "back to basics" or something, but the more I listen to the album, it seems like a misguided stab at reaching for significance, like..."You know what's really IMPORTANT? Poultry."

The (positive) WaPo review describes it as a "wellness lifestyle record."

Feel free to wince a little upon hearing that Kacey Musgraves is now singing about the holistic benefits of moon bathing and jade bracelets, but please know that unlike other recent pop albums that dabble in wellness woo-woo — Lorde’s “Solar Power,” FKA twigs’s “Caprisongs” — the singer’s new record, “Deeper Well,” totally gets away with it. Why? Because Musgraves is a country star who ultimately believes in Willie Nelson more than astrology, tarot or Goop. She knows that the greatest country songs ever written aim to provide tidy answers to the thorniest questions of existence. Lucky for those of us who think of wellness lifestyles as spiritual make-believe for people with money, those are still the kinds of songs Musgraves wants to write.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 18 March 2024 19:45 (one month ago) link

(Technically he calls it a "wellness lifestyle album," but same trailer.)

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 18 March 2024 19:46 (one month ago) link

it's a nice little album, but the plaintive directness i admired about the song "deeper well" is an exception among the tracks here, most of which struggle to rise beyond lyrically mundane. it helps that "deeper well" has one of her most classically gorgeous melodies, the others seem to go in one ear and out the other.

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Monday, 18 March 2024 20:18 (one month ago) link

Better than where most lifestyle brands would have those melodies go.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 18 March 2024 20:28 (one month ago) link

I really wanted to play the contrarian in this thread. A mostly acoustic, chill album that doesn’t really have any big singles actually sounds perfectly up my album. And on first listen I was really taken with it. But after a week of many listens I’ve more or less landed where many of you have. It’s a fine record, just ok. I agree that it’s lacking a lyrical sharpness that is really required when musically it’s so unchanging (and maybe four songs too many at that).
