what were everyone's favorites from this year? what do you think will place high on the RA list? FACT list? other media outlets, etc

the late great, Monday, 3 December 2012 04:51 (eleven years ago) link

my top 5 album releases, off the top of my head

1. lone - galaxy garden
2. levon vincent - fabric mix
3. ital tek - nebula dance
4. actress - RIP
5. v/a - hemlock recordings chapter one (cheating, i know)

honestly i listened to a lot more stuff from the end of 2011 than from 2012, it feels like.

so tell me your picks.

the late great, Monday, 3 December 2012 05:03 (eleven years ago) link

let's see:

my no. 1 has probably got to be Ellipsis, for both the track itself and what it meant for me throughout the year.

Head High - Rave (Dirt Mix)

Dixon's excellent Live at Robert Johnson mix

formerly EDB (ed.b), Monday, 3 December 2012 05:11 (eleven years ago) link

Jai Paul - Jasmine
Mister Lies - Cleam
Nicolas Jaar - With Just One Glance
Storm Queen - Let’s Make Mistakes (Club)
Traxman - Footworkin on Air

Moka, Monday, 3 December 2012 06:48 (eleven years ago) link

Regarding Jam City, because it is so spartan. I didn't crack it until a day/week of being assailed by mimsy and suddenly it sounded perfect. A corrective. And its contradictory Romantic Brutalism helped it dodge the tiredness that plagued the Blackest Ever Black end of industrial traditionalism. Same reason I loved B.D.I.'s Decoded Messages of Life and Love 12". If it sounds like a factory, it sounds like a factory filmed by James Bidgood - polished, spritzed with oil and lit with red, blue and pink gels.

Jedmond, Monday, 3 December 2012 08:32 (eleven years ago) link

Jam City album was pretty meh other than "How We Relate to the Body" and "The Courts". A case of well-chosen singles if there ever was one.

i keep meaning to pick my favourite mixes too, i've listened to more this year than any other year i'd say. i'll have a think.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Monday, 3 December 2012 12:07 (eleven years ago) link

Inspector Norse was Jan 2012 I believe.

Mine are:

Spectr - Dance 4 Me (Scuba doing awesome Todd Edwards shit rather than fake Chemical Brothers nonsense)
Locussolus - Berghain // Telephone (dark basement techno // sparkly yacht disco)
Raiders of the Lost ARP - On & On (mysterious druggy disco)
Lauer - Trainman (mournful retro analogue house)
I:Cube - Lucifer En Discotheque (slightly camp krauty rock bosh)
Kolsch - Der Alte (end-of-set piano house)
Julio Bashmore - Au Seve (UK bass dude makes massive big-room house anthem)
Murphy Jax & Mike Dunn - Let's Get To It (Serge Santiago Mix) (sax-heavy 90s revivalism)
Hufschlag & Braun - Train To Cologne (Coma Remix) (friendly Kompakt-style house)
Pachanga Boys - Time (drippy Kompakt house)
Lucky Paul - Elephant Island (Midland Remix) (laid back 3pm beach bar house)
Bo Saris - She's On Fire (Maya Jane Coles Remix) (deep and druggy 3am beach bar house)
Emeralds - Does It Look Like I'm Here (Daphni Remix) (mostrous Relevee redux)
Abstraxion - Moribayasa (DJ Kaos Edit) (festival techno)
Broke One - The Empire (brightly-coloured sugar house)

And Inspector Norse but everyone's saying Inspector Norse.

Matt DC, Monday, 3 December 2012 12:24 (eleven years ago) link

there was another kolsch record i liked better than der alte, can't remember it though.

also i liked, in a cheesy way, the carl craig remix of slam, never heard anyone mention it but it's incredible:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB-lwmqx_KY

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Monday, 3 December 2012 12:28 (eleven years ago) link

The other Kolsch record I played a bit this year was Opa, almost electrohouse, massive chords, barely any space in the beat. Not sure if that's the one you mean though.

Matt DC, Monday, 3 December 2012 12:33 (eleven years ago) link

(That list is house-techno-disco only, there's loads of other UKG interzone/funky/Redlight-style chunky bangers as well but that just sits in a different compartment in my head)

Matt DC, Monday, 3 December 2012 12:35 (eleven years ago) link

had a google, this is the one i mean, love it:

good call on the first two here

coal, Monday, 3 December 2012 13:26 (eleven years ago) link

albums/commercial mixes:

legowelt - the paranormal soul (i might be blinded by my current infatuation with this very new record, but this nonetheless seems deserving of top ten status)
nina kraviz - s/t (i can see why some might not think this is particularly novel but it doesn't matter, this is beautiful)
andy stott - luxury problems (how is this album not blowing the fuck up on every single eoy list so far?)
blondes - s/t (one of many obvious choices)
john talabot - fin (see above)
fort romeau - kingdoms (this album stuck with me wayyyy more than i could've ever anticipated)
tin man - neo neo acid (apparently 2012 was a good year for not particularly innovative yet gorgeous and atmospheric lonely late night comedown-house full lengths?)
v/a - panorama bar 04 mixed by nick hoppner (god damnit i need to go back to berlin)
lone - galaxy garden (classy stuff)
juju & jordasch - techno primitivism (this thing is all over the place but stays compelling at most every turn)

i'll post some trax picks later, it still seems a bit early to make any judgements

what has stuck with me:

Some good music here that's new to me, or at least I couldn't ID before: Huxley - Let It Go, Head High - Rave. Thanks for those suggestions. Obviously Inspector Norse is this year's darling tho. For the alleged resurgence of techno this year, I'm not seeing a lot of the Midland, Pinch, or Shed here to indicate a significant presence. Personally I highly rate the MCDE remix of Midland's What We Know, in that vein. Otherwise I'd say Presk and Jimmy Edgar deserve mentions as well, Edgar's probably going to be getting noticed a lot more in the future since he's teamed up with Machinedrum.

The thread needs more of this - Bobby Bell - Until Morning, I'd say a much more fitting homage to Paris Is Burning than the tripe posted above:

Well that description could very well put me off anything.

The thing about "Inspector Norse" is it's very openly cheesy and sounds almost as dorky as you do right now, but it's got this emotional undercurrent that isn't necessarily immediately apparent. It kind of feels like the awkward goofiness when someone's about to open up their feelings to you in a big rush out of nowhere with tears in their eyes but their still trying to make up their mind about it and you know something's up.

This thread really underscores how disconnected ILM has become from commercial dance music.

Not a criticism, it seems reflective of a broader trend (in the music itself as much as anything else) over at least the last 7 years or so.

Tim F, Monday, 3 December 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

how do you mean?

always love a tim not-criticism

r|t|c, Monday, 3 December 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

One component of this issue being the almost-ghettoisation of commercial dance music - e.g in Melbourne the commercial radio stations that used to play a lot of it can satisfy the Friday night driving crowd just as well with all the clubby R&B and chart-pop, rendering "proper" dance music slightly redundant.

So commercial stuff flies under the radar much more than it did back when the demarcations between dance / r&b / pop were more clearly drawn.

Well as someone who spent a lot of time listening to bloghouse and dubstep, modern pop dance bores me to tears / just makes me want to cry.

Give me my grouchy techno records.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:04 (eleven years ago) link

At least from an American perspective, it seems really odd to call commercial dance music "ghettoized", where it has more of a platform than ever. But hell, you can add "Bangarang" to my list.

these bitches is my sons and i make dad jokes (The Reverend), Monday, 3 December 2012 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

Vahid, basically that there is near zero overlap between the music I tend to hear at mainstream clubs (whether straight or gay) and the music listed in this thread.

This wasn't the case in equivalent threads say 8 years ago.

But the likely reasons for that are a lot broader than just "this is what today's ilxors listen to now".

Another factor is internet culture making it a lot easier for people to hone in on stuff that sounds populist without actually being so (Funkystepz remixes being a good example of this).

Tim F, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:06 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah I guess the US is trending in a different direction - though the "platform" that dance music has there is still more tenuous than the platform it's always had elsewhere.

Tim F, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:08 (eleven years ago) link

Going to an EDM night makes 28 feel ancient, its so blatantly music for 16-19 year olds.

these bitches is my sons and i make dad jokes (The Reverend), Monday, 3 December 2012 23:12 (eleven years ago) link

And it can never go back to how it was at this point. The very fact that you have a whole generation kids, way younger than even Josiah describes whose first exposure to pop music is EDM means that they'll be attached to electronic music in some respect their whole lives, which has never been the case in the US before.

these bitches is my sons and i make dad jokes (The Reverend), Monday, 3 December 2012 23:13 (eleven years ago) link

harry fraud is dope and producers who started in an instrumental/dance music/beat scene/etc context do seem to be getting more work with vocalists, but if this stuff is filtering into 'mainstream' rap and r&b, it's happening pretty slowly? i can definitely think of examples, but only a few.

Yeah arguably a variety of remixes of "I Found You" fill this role, I'm not even sure if the Bob Sinclar one is the biggest in terms of club omnipresence (I don't really feel like trawling through every purported remix on youtube). The 2011 equivalent might be house remixes of "Rolling In The Deep", I think, though to be more precise the 2012 equivalent of those is this remix of Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason" which I hear quite a bit but haven't had a chance to ID yet.

If I was going to argue against myself i'd point to stuff like the Calvin Harris/Florence Welch single which gets played alongside this kind of thing but also has a separate unlife as a pop song.

My sense is that, for some people post-dubstep's belated discovery of R&B samples felt fresh, and for some people it was like "duh, took you long enough to work that out, it's been a thing everywhere else forver", and for the people in the first camp, by the beginning of 2012 it was like "enough already for this trick that will forever and always be associated with 2010 in my head" and for people in the second camp it was like "well objecting to this wouldn't be too different to objecting to divas or kickdrums, so..."

I think that post Dubstep mostly came to the RnB sampling by way of rediscovering its roots in 2step.

Of course if you were listening to 2step the whole time, like you were Tim, this must have been a painfully slow process.

Yeah, maybe it's just that being very invested in post-dubstep at that time, it seemed like EVERYONE in that genre was using r&b samples like that and it was cool for a while but then reached a breaking point, while in e.g. house, their use was spread out a bit more and the genre was never at any point as dependent on them, which created less of an opportunity for burnout? I still think that "Getting Me Down" had a weird sense of swing that set it apart even from other post-dubstep tho.

tx Tim!

in e.g. house, their use was spread out a bit more and the genre was never at any point as dependent on them

this is true of uk garage but not deep/non-mersh house: before 2012 it was just a here and there thing, now almost every other hip dh release has a Brandy or an Aaliyah vocal sample... as i said i don't mind it so far, but i sure as hell won't feel insatied when it's all over soon

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 03:01 (eleven years ago) link

Getting Me Down did have a weird sense of swing, its nowhere near as dependent on 2-step revivalism or Burial mimicry as a lot of that music was.

Felt new, and I think he's proven that he's not a one trick pony at this point.

Is that little melody running through "Maybe Tonight" (that comes in at around 3:20 on the Instrumental version) an intentional borrowing from Linda Rondstadt's "You're No Good"? I mean, it's not exact, but it kind of jumps out at me.

all i heard was like lush ominous melancholy iirc broadly speaking

agree totally, think this discussion was had at the time about talabot. haven't played it since the week it came out, i'm finding that sound, as i hear more of it, a bit emotionally overbearing at the expense of beats or complexity.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 09:48 (eleven years ago) link

Going back to Tim's point - it's kind of weird because dance sounds are all over the charts and commercial dance has completely eaten pop, R&B and to an extent rap. But garden variety commercial dance is kind of in a pop-that-isn't-that-popular holding pattern at the moment, and yr standard issue Rihanna or Flo Rida bangers fulfil that High Street club function in more or less the same way anyway.

ILM in general seems to acknowledge commercial dance more when the underground and the high street are closer together (as they were broadly between 1999 and 2002), and they've miles apart for the last few years. They're getting a bit closer together now, mind.

It's kinda difficult to judge though because ILM was much smaller and more dilettantish in the time period I'm talking about.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 10:10 (eleven years ago) link

And of course the dance press in general has mad form for looking the other way when things actually become popular, look at FACT trying really hard to pretend that Katy B's album didn't exist last year.

Really interesting list thanks, glad to see some d&b here. Those tracks would have completely blown my mind 10 years ago, and it seems like d&b is finally doing now what we hoped it was capable of, back then, although it may be too late for anyone to notice now. No mention of Rockwell's Childhood Memories though? Like a couple of the songs you mention, it does almost seem to break the d&b mold.

The other big trend in d&b this year was veteran artists making the crossover to slower tempos and four to the floor beats. Attempts like Photek's tend to leave me with the feeling that d&b artists tend to burn out young and should probably retire at 25 in general, but then again Boddika and Trevino have managed to impress me, and now I even hear Doc Scott mention that he's been working on some house tracks.

Was this also the year juke was supposed to blow up, or was that last year?

viborg, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 14:33 (eleven years ago) link

I'm surprised not to see any love for Monolake - Ghosts, it's a good'un. Definitely a winner for the folks on the board mourning the loss of sound design.

not heard his recent stuff but Photek's always done slow stuff well and his house track with Robert Owens from like 12 years ago is a total jam

disappointed to see Funky fizzle out this year, but Jackin and the new UKG stuff has taken its place quite nicely. I'm also fascinated by how the new UKG stuff both sounds a lot like and deviates significantly from the older stuff.

keep meaning to post to this thread, i'm not organized enough to pop off a list without digging through a bunch of stuff. some of the jackin tracks are pretty cool, but i can only take so much british mcing. these stand out: Nick Hannam & Tom Garnett - You Want Me, Driicky Graham - Snapbacks & Tattoos (Donkie Punch & Lorenzo Remix), Francois ft Louis Benton - I Can Say

Jackin' Chan

'I'm going to man up and admit that I prefer where the interzone thread began the year to where it ended it. Jackin so far is one of those things that I can see the fun in rather than feel it'

Kinda agree, kinda.

I think to much stock has been chucked at jackin' to early. It mostly just sounds like elecrto house from 10 or so years ago and every now and again you get the odd bassline/pop influence. Every tune is pretty much... That bigbeat/electro thing years back...

the late great, Saturday, 15 December 2012 00:24 (eleven years ago) link

well, ok, maybe it's just a mixing style preference.

xpost: ah yes I realize now it's the dub version that was mentioned.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 15 December 2012 01:52 (eleven years ago) link

But to be clear, I'm not the one who prefers 2-minute prog-style mixing. I like myself some Ben UFOs and whatnot but this mix is really strong in the "quick fade in/out" / "start/stop" department.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 15 December 2012 05:39 (eleven years ago) link

that's okay for me, it has such a strong command of mood, feeling and pace that i don't think it suffers much at all from the hands-off mixing style

the late great, Saturday, 15 December 2012 05:52 (eleven years ago) link

"hands-off mixing", that's probably the term I was looking for.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 15 December 2012 07:01 (eleven years ago) link

dont have a preferred style of mixing it really depends what the two records in question are

coal, Saturday, 15 December 2012 09:17 (eleven years ago) link

Agreed, for me It's all about the tension a mix can make. If that's through 64 bars of clinical EQing, or through hearing end-silence-start, as long as it makes narrative sense, and danceflor sense if in that situation, it's all good.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 15 December 2012 09:27 (eleven years ago) link

andrés' "new for u" is one of the consensus EOY picks that's new to me and i don't really get it? those strings are kind of super-cheesy and not in a good way, in a sort of "disco on a car advert" way

lex pretend, Monday, 17 December 2012 10:51 (eleven years ago) link

well, not really anything to get besides why people would like it so much

i guess a wan gesture of classicism to rise above the terrifying prospect of nailing your flag to a hot mast

thing is it doesnt even have the pipecockian depths of hypnotic detroit parrish stuff, it sounds like any herby hiphop producer's first go at house, a pitched up dilla offcut, which it appears it more or less indeed is

new for u was the jam of the summer, y'all are crazy.

i realize at least a few people here are contractually obligated to hate on things that they see at the top of more than one of these lists, but this track had a relatively organic rise to prominence for the last 6 months or so and as someone who's been paying attention it's totally surprising yet still pretty exciting to see it topping eoy lists. andres and dilla obv have a lot of similar features but i feel like going into the track expecting a prime example of "hypnotic detroit parrish stuff" is pretty misguided and kinda lazy

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Monday, 17 December 2012 11:53 (eleven years ago) link

"New For U" is fine but I'd want to find better places to jam in that case.

Mind you I recognise my own personal jams of the summer barely exist outside of a very small ILM bubble.

Tim F, Monday, 17 December 2012 12:02 (eleven years ago) link

i didnt go into it expecting anything, i was assessing it in the presumed terms of its exaltation, the vibe it taps into for people

r|t|c, Monday, 17 December 2012 12:09 (eleven years ago) link

sorry that should read "heard it out a fair bit"

coal, Monday, 17 December 2012 12:11 (eleven years ago) link

i am not exactly a huge stan for this track, mind you, but i always viewed it as a hip-hop producer's first, rough-take at turning a sugary soulful string sample into something a bit more uptempo and housey. it's definitely weird to talk about it as the foremost shining example of dance music in 2012 but i feel like it never had any pretenses as such, and it works for completely different reasons than something like a parrish or moodymann track (despite obvious stylistic similarities).

there is something far less 'heady' or 'deep' (or whatever you wanna call it) about "new for u", it just works and it's fun and it's simple and apparently a lot of edm listeners are craving those types of effortless-if-not-particularly-novel grooves

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Monday, 17 December 2012 12:11 (eleven years ago) link

If only people actually listened to the amazing music in 2012 that fits this description a lot more excitingly.

Tim F, Monday, 17 December 2012 12:16 (eleven years ago) link

the dance lists are usually a reliable source of new-to-me fun/simple/hooky/euphoric jams, i was approaching it expecting something like that (or a "oh THAT tune" moment) and was just rather underwhelmed

i've been working my way through this thread in a scattershot kind of way and there is tons that does live up to my expectations though, so far ejeca's "horizon", still going's "d117", the finnebassen track, the dennis ferrer/nick curly remix, the maya jane coles remix of bo saris and the reboot track are all top discoveries

lex pretend, Monday, 17 December 2012 12:20 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah Ejeca's "Horizon" is great.

Tim F, Monday, 17 December 2012 12:21 (eleven years ago) link

i am not exactly a huge stan for this track, mind you, but i always viewed it as a hip-hop producer's first, rough-take at turning a sugary soulful string sample into something a bit more uptempo and housey. it's definitely weird to talk about it as the foremost shining example of dance music in 2012 but i feel like it never had any pretenses as such, and it works for completely different reasons than something like a parrish or moodymann track (despite obvious stylistic similarities).

the "track of the year" is often like this, really, a sort of recognisable and more downtempo break from more structured or quintessential tracks. which by the end of the year becomes a kind of symbol for good vibe or happiness, with nobody actually really listening any more. don't mean that to criticise the andres track either, it's a bit like a "mumblin' yeah" or something of its time.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 December 2012 12:27 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah that's a good comparison, though "mumblin' yeah" felt more zeitgeisty I feel.

Tim F, Monday, 17 December 2012 12:29 (eleven years ago) link

I never heard Mumblin' Yeah out at the time and I was similarly nonplussed to see it topping lists in 2007 or whenever it was. Without having been there for it I just couldn't understand the love.

I still haven't actually heard the Andres tune.

definitely I can see how both tunes win you over by constantly emerging out of other tunes in the mix.

It's a weird thing, I remember with Mumblin' Yeah when it was first out I was in Berlin, and it was played heavily, a few times a night, with big reactions each time. It really has that "taking a break" feel to it that New For U has.

I haven't really been to clubs much this year but I've heard New For U in loads of sets from quite a range of DJs. I sort of feel that a lot of big tracks like this are just more recognisable than the tracks that surround them in sets, without necessarily being better, though I think it takes a DJ or fanatic to get really excited about a particularly well done groove or functional thing.

I agree that with Mumblin' Yeah, at the time, it was the zeitgeist thing that Tim mentions, which made it quite exciting and the kind of thing you really back for a #1.

What I find weird and impressive about Inspector Norse, is how it seems to refuse to become just a symbolic "yay" tune, every time I hear it out I feel caught up by the quality of the groove, and I sense that around me. I've never known a hit to endure so stubbornly.

i can actually see it being underwhelming in the context of it being named BEST TRACK OF THE YEAR as opposed to it being some track you heard in mixes a lot over the summer that kept growing on you and never stopped.

the amazing music in 2012 that fits this description a lot more excitingly

i'm sure you mean jackin house or something far different than what i'm thinking of, but i'm not arguing it's the best of the music that would fit this description. that loop is just plainly likable in a sorta nonpartisan way and thus it tops these lists easily. i'm a sucker for the track but i doubt many voters had it as their actual #1

I sort of feel that a lot of big tracks like this are just more recognisable than the tracks that surround them in sets, without necessarily being better

otm. I only found it what it was by October or so, and that's not for want of hearing it. I knew it every time I heard it and can remember back in June or July thinking "what is this" and knowing it was obviously a really big tune as I'd heard it so often. it doesn't demand you to go and find out.

The FACT list was kind of all over the place and their #2 was a Julia Holter album track so it's perfectly plausible there was very little in the way of consensus. The record that lots of people kinda like that is no one's #1 tends to do well in that sort of scenario.

bon and rau - morning funk - smallville is nothing new for anyone, was lucky enough to get to golden pudel in hamburg this year, absolutely amazing (and tiny) club - heard this at about 0530 on a wednesday morning, no bouncers, move d headlining, and support dj moved to working behind the bar after playing.

xps the juju and jordash album was sorta baffling at first, there are a lot of stylistic jumps and it wasn't exactly the deep house full length i was expecting BUT once it clicked i started loving it. seems rare for house producers to even try to cover this broad of a spectrum in one album, and jj&j definitely avoid mungolian jetset-style high-pitched maximalist goofiness or novelty when they go from say a murky almost sun araw-type jam sesh into subtle acid techno into woozy balearic stuff or w/e. it's similar to the terrence dixon album in that it's not easy to unpack but it definitely rewards every attempt at doing so

i love the juju & jordash album, it traverses a lot of different genres really naturally and none of it seems tossed off like they're just including non-tracky interludes to try to make an "album." the terrence dixon was too dissonant for me for the most part on first listen, i'll come back to it b/c everyone seems to love it, though. have you heard the mungolian jetset album from this year, though? b/c i really dislike the whole goofy maximalist thing, too, but mungodelics really surprised me.

I hadn't heard of or heard the Andres track either. Seems odd to see something so conservative (but not even pointedly so in the way that excites the pipecock brigade) so feted? I could def see it standing out in a set tho, doesn't really sound like much of the other house I hear recently, although I admittedly haven't been keeping up with that end of things. Seems like it would be pretty fun to dance to too.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 11:55 (eleven years ago) link

Damn why must you people ruin everything I love? New 4 U is wonderfully catchy tune. Is there really a Coldplay song better than Howling? If there is I haven't heard it.

So I guess I'm the only one with a soft spot for Nicki Minaj's Starships? I don't know why but I actually read some reviews and it seems like it was widely reviled as derivative of a variety of other mediocre dance pop songs, but to me there's just something about it...

viborg, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 12:08 (eleven years ago) link

I like Howling but I'm not sure I'd particularly want to dance to it. This end of dance music has had a soft spot for a fake Coldplay croon for a while - I'm thinking of the Supermayer remix of 'Heart's A Mess' by Gotye, half of what Apparat's done etc.

fucking love "starships", wouldn't have thought to bring it up in this thread though

"pound the alarm" was less ubiquitously anthemic but probably better? idk if it's nicki's branding or nicki's charisma (or just nicki's shamelessness) that elevates her trashy commercial dance-pop over most other people's, but she makes it pretty amazing

neither are really as amazing as i first thought they were, but i do prefer the og

the candi staton/larse and maxxi soundsystem/herbert remixes i gleaned from this thread are just ruling my life right now

Posted that on the general 2012 list, I love Tim and his approach.

Best DJ/live act you saw last year anyone?

Live - Shackleton, who is absolutely immense live EVERY TIME

DJ - Probably Omar-S. Carl Craig and Kode9 were also amazing

I know it's an idiotic request. Nearly every trap/bass/whatever video ever is either shot just in front of a garage or in a kitchen. All I remember is that someone was wearing a gas mask. Not much to go on...

Kevin Martin live for me. The Bug at a pre-Notting Hill Carnival bass party was one of the heaviest things I've seen all year with new MC Miss Red to add to Daddy Freddy and Flowdan. And then King Midas Sound at Corsica, probably even better.

Reading the Dope Jams rundown of the year reminded me of the talk about the Andres track up thread.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 18:21 (eleven years ago) link

they're right about most of those records but jeez dope jams schtick is irritating - those are some easy targets, everyone knows carl craig went to shit years ago, just pointless

suare, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

i kinda like the joe claussell but then i got no problem with elevator music

suare, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 19:00 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i dig me some elevator music, that rundown is positively pipecockian minus the drexciya shrug, or maybe plus the drexciya shrug, the math is a little complicated.

as far as carl craig goes, people get old i guess? the 'use me again' remix is kind of nuts imo.

i imagine the staff at dope jams is also aging.

one time when i went there the only staffperson in the place was napping on the couch, so

Another big favourite of mine from last year that appeared nowhere in EOY lists, and, in fact, I never heard about once outside of ILM, is this piece of synthpop perfection:

I noticed a lot of folk digging Silent Servant's Negative Fascination. One of the leanest techno albums of the year, great album.

yeah it's cool. was listening to that and Morphosis on Spotify yesterday.

earlier this week Dope Jams sent out an email announcing they are closing, btw. (they will still keep an online store going apparently but the brooklyn brick and mortar shop is closing)

I made a mix of my 2012 favorites. There are some non-dance things in there but as it is well over 50% house music I figured I'll post it here

27. Mohn - Ebertplatz 2020 (from "Mohn" CD on Kompakt) *
28. Josephine Foster - Child Of God (from "Blood Rushing" CD on Fire) *

Some of the tracks are stand-ins for albums. For example I like "Destiny" more than "Last Land" but that fit in the mix better and maybe fewer people have heard.

Francis Harris's "Leland" is probably my favorite house album after "fin" and woefully overlooked. And Susumu Yokota's album sunk without a trace. It wasn't even on Discogs.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 24 January 2013 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

True the vocals aren't very good. I skip those tracks. But the rest makes up for it. I'm generally finding that anything involving Greg Paulus (one half of No Regular Play) is well worth checking out.

Not heard it before, and yes, wow.

Tim F, Friday, 15 February 2013 20:54 (eleven years ago) link

From my POV its really rare to hear such a distinctive vocal w/that track, although my lazy ears just pick up her sound not what she says.

Like how it stops with a couple of mins left too.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 16 February 2013 11:07 (eleven years ago) link

yeah very striking isnt it, real proper marrow made flesh in a fraidy-cat zone where it's so often measly implied

if you dare check the original it's like some truly ghastly strictly for wankers inverted-commas tina turner thunderdome thing - this genius mix rightfully coronates her to spacequeen and creates a dark palace to prowl and skulk and brood in
