My vote's classic. Never got ahold of Peter Perrett's Woke Up Sticky, and keep swearing to get around to it. Anyone know what has becoem of him recently?

Classic. I love "Lovers of Today" and put it on most mix tapes I make for first time customers (girl friends).

, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Classic and beyond! It's a shame that Perret/Only Ones seem to be so ignored these days, except for "Another Girl, Another Planet". I'd vote for "Even Serpents Shine" as slightly the best album ("Curtains For You","In betweens" - genius) but all three original studio albums are great.

As for "Woke up Sticky" - get it if you can find a copy. It's worth it for PP's desperate version of "I'm Not like Everybody Else", although most of the originals are good too.

"1st time customers", yeuch.
i just got a great song by them on a comp tape from someone actually. Not someone that wants to get with me tho' (I don't think)

From the lack of response it looks like The Only Ones mean nothing to anyone any more. That's a shame. Or as Peter Perret put it "It's a crime/It's a crime/I'm always in the wrong place at the wrong time"

Sorry. I was away. I love the Only Ones. I'm always confused about how many people know them. Classic. Favourite song: 'Prisoners'.

Nick, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have an Only Ones tape somewhere and remember not much liking it. But I've got nothing interesting (even to me let alone you!) to say about them so I didn't answer the question.

Tom, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hey, if you send me their records, maybe they'll mean something to me ! But for now, "Another Girl Another Planet" is all I know - it's pretty great.

Patrick, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I had a massive teen crush on the only ones, triggered i believe by inadvertently witnessing PP's 1st post smack live appearence, bizarrely joining the heart throbs for an encore at camden underworld. they did lovers of today.i remember my bewildered young self thinking "fuck, its keith richards, no, its iggy pop, no, he's too cool to be julian cope".i spent the next three years convinced perret was the epitome of cool. still listen sporadicaly: even serpents shine, the debut, the peel sessions & remains are all stone classics. the whole of the law, the prisoners ahd, oohh, bundles more. babys got a gun is unremittingly dire tho'. & also they have the distinction of being THE uglieset band of all time.

cw, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What a voice. Certainly one of those Great Lost Talents. It took me an embarrasingly long time to realize that Another Girl, Another Planet was probably about heroin.

Sterling just called them a punk band over on the Only Connect III thread. They always sounded a bit like that to me (I kind of think of them as having something in common with Buzzcocks) but I have a feeling that anyone around at the time would think this an absurd notion. I mean look at them! They look more arse-end of glam/pub rock really. And those guitar solos are a bit of a punk no-no, dontcha think? I think Perrett's blank delivery is what confuses things.

Nick, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

They're more displaced NY punk than anything else aren't they? much closer to the Dolls/Hell/ Patti smith lineage than any UK peers. Thank god they didn't embrace the punk 77 dresscode tho' - can you imagine...

cw, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Take it from 'someone who was around at the time' it IS an absurd notion, Nick! The arse-end of glam/pub-rock idea is close, as is the NY punk idea, but only valid for Patti Smith. Half of the Only Ones were of course real 60's veterans - Mike Kellie from sort-of-proggers Spooky Tooth amongst others, and Alan Mair from The Beatstalkers. Perret brought the NY/drugs/glam-punk chic and John Perry was a shit- hot lead guitarist, but not really a punk. None of this matters a jot, as The Only Ones were magnificent!

Dr. C, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Re: the Only Ones and the US: in that video comp you used to be able to get back in the early '90s, John Perry can be seen wearing a rather fine Modern Lovers t-shirt

Mark Morris, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Have noticed 'Another Girl, Another Planet' being used on two different tv trailers recently - one for that Australian 'That's Life' rip-off on C4, one for some ITV medical bollocks starring Martin Sheen. WTF is that all about?

Andrew L, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I only have the red vinyl rerelease 12" from February 1992 (it was to promote a New Wave compilation, and had 'Pretty In Pink' on it too!). It's just 'Another Girl' and 'Lovers Of Today'. I like both tracks, but I don't exactly feel in the presence of greatness when I hear them.

Maybe that sounds bad. What I mean, they suggest to me that the Only Ones were - Good. And that's good enough.

the pinefox, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Andrew: 'The Secret Life of Us' is a rip-off that outstrips its predecessor. Bonzer!

My favourite Only Ones track: 'Miles from Nowhere'. I like some of their songs a great deal, but his singing, plus the wearisome drug content = dud over extended periods.

stevie t, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Have only heard the "Another Girl, Another Planet" song as covered by The Replacements. I remember an Only Ones track being included on the 1-2-3-4 Punk and New Wave Box Set.

Dr. C - thanks for the recommendation on another thread. I ended up getting the first two albums. But I may get the compilation later cos 'Lovers of Today' isn't on either of them. Right now, I think I have a slight preference for the second album cos it seems more pop, the first one rock.

but his singing, plus the wearisome drug content = dud over extended periods

I actually love his voice. It's too bad his personal life eliminated any possible ambiguity in the lyrics - or maybe I'm just being naive.

two years pass...
I was listening to the new 2CD set "Why Don't You Kill Yourself?: The CBS Recordings" (which compiles all three albums plus pretty much everything else they did for CBS) over the weekend and thought it was time to start / revive an appropriate thread about them.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001HK1VA.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I knew they were good but to be honest I'd forgotten quite how good - at their peak they really were right up there with Buzzcocks for creating perfect fey / winsome punk / pop songs.

As has already been said, they were viewed with (at best / least) suspicion by the mainstream UK punk scene, mainly because: some of them were "too old" (i.e. over 30); drummer Mike Kellie had actually been in (eeeek!) Spooky Tooth; Only Ones themselves (as England's Glory) had been about and gigging before the 'Pistols; they clearly knew how to play their instruments / write songs (not the only respects in which there are similarities between them and The Vibrators) and didn't conform to the "faster, louder" punk stereotype.

Nevertheless they were out and playing many of the same places around the same time - and often on the same bills - as most of the usual UK punk suspects; and they continue to appear on innumerable "punk" compilations, usually (OK, always!) with their signature tune "Another Girl Another Planet".

I vaguely remember reading a story somewhere about them playing a gig with the 'Pistols, where Sid was apparently astounded by Peter Perrett's huge capacity for smack - whilst Perrett was horrified to encounter Sid using water from a toilet to mainline speed!

Not particularly surprised to see comparisons above to some of the NY punk bands - 'though maybe a little surprised not to see any mention of Television during that discussion....

Not remotely surprised to see that that the estimable Dr. C loves 'em of course.

Another similarity that struck me over the weekend was with Morrissey / The Smiths; particularly as regards the precision and determination with which certain unusual words are selected and deployed - sometimes almost in spite of the scansion and melodic flow of the song.

Was Mozzer much of an Only Ones fan does anyone know?

Unfortunately (and probably inevitably) it did all start to trail off somewhat during the third album (much 'though I love both the Only Ones and Pauline Murray, that duet really wasn't a very good idea, was it?!?).

I remember purely by chance being present at their farewell performance 'in '81 - Peter Perrett looking totally emaciated and completely lost and forelorn in the middle of the stage The Lyceum; shivering with cold under those burning hot lights and despite multiple layers of jumpers and coats and scarves.

What an appalling waste of a phenomenal talent.

If I had to POO it would probably have to be "Out There In The Night" (could this the best / only good song written about a cat since "Lucifer Sam"?).

Anyway, I say classic, obviously - what say you?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 7 June 2004 09:45 (nineteen years ago) link

A lost soul for sure. He was sort of in the same bag as Mick Jones in a way, in that his 'keef' et al fixations were the right kind to allow him to succeed under the 'punk' banner, but the amount of hype and pushing thanks to CBS, worked against them. Anyway, it was good that 'another girl' became a belated small hit. But the man himself was a waster of his own talent. so it goes...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 7 June 2004 09:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think it was a waste - we got 3 great albums. That's more than most. I do feel badly that his life has been a bit of a mess though.

Me, The Doc and Mark Grout.... that line-up could only have been more predictable in The Only Ones had come from Wokingham!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 7 June 2004 10:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow, I looked up this thread only this morning while I was listening to the first album. Thought about reviving it, then realised I had nothing very constructive to add other than "Cor blimey, what a flipping fantastic band!".

Am I losing my marbles or do I detect a lot of Perrett's drawl in Howard Devoto? Or is it vice-versa?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 7 June 2004 10:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Funnily enough I thought about Howie too Nick - in terms of lyric-writing more than vocal delivery 'though; more Pete Shelley on the voice imho.

In chronological terms don't really see how Perrett could actually have informed Sheley or Devoto initially - although I'm sure they would all have listened to each other's work subsequently.

I suspect all three may have had some impact on Mozzer 'though (Shelley and Devoto maybe more directly because of the Manchester connection).

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 7 June 2004 10:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I really like the only ones, but i'm not from wokingham. i want that 2-cd thing. my vinyl is less than stellar. what extra stuff soes it have. b-sides?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 7 June 2004 11:04 (nineteen years ago) link

'A' and 'B' side of the first single that they released (themselves?) on "Vengeance" before signing to CBS (Comsat Angels compilers please take note!); both the alternative 'B' sides to the original releases of "Another Girl..." all the other 'B' sides and all the alternative takes / mixes previously included on the 1CD comp. The Immortal Story.

The only significant omission I can think of is "Silent Night" (which appeared as a single - apparently on Vengeance - a couple of years after the band split up).

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 7 June 2004 11:19 (nineteen years ago) link

The 'story' video.
And a book 'homme fatale' or some such.

I notice how book and vid both end with 'the new stuff is fantastic' i.e. about to come out (and in both cases had to wait what, ten years and a heartthrobs team up?)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 7 June 2004 13:44 (nineteen years ago) link

AGAP was released 14 April 1978, so shortly after that...I love Only Ones to distraction, although I'll be the first to admit that they didn't fulfil their potential on the albums...Has anyone heard the album they supposedly recorded for CBS of covers (apparently called Hits Hits Hits) in response to their lack of chart action and their label's subsequent frustration? Maybe the demos don't exist.
I think Perrett's solo stuff is terrific, too. So classic, then, apart from giving the Manics too many riffs and solos.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Monday, 7 June 2004 13:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, the influence on the Manics is obvious (the hairstyle, the solos, the chiffon). There was a compilation out in about '92 (The Immortal Story?). Got into them around this time. The Peel Sessions is the definitive stuff though. Most of the studio output does not live up to it.

Robert Moore (treble), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I came across what appears to be a complete list of every known demo, recording session, single, album, compliation, bootleg, etc. etc. that Peter Perrett's known to have been involved with when I was trawling the web earlier; and I can't see any mention of a covers album on there....

Well, did anyone see them on Jools Holland last night?

A very wonky version of AGAP, but still magnificent to see them again. Vocals were VERY dodgy, both Perrett's and Perry and Mair's backing vocals. The performance was pretty energetic though. Great tone from John's magnificently battered olympic white Strat, although he simplified the middle solo a bit (to accomodate for aging fingers?) He's still pretty much my favourite guitarist anyway. Perrett was playing a horrible PRS (ugh!) instead of his Tele and Mair was playing a very unusual Les Paul bass. Mike Kellie looked exactly the same, and as you'd expect, played like a God.

They'll be on Saturday's show doing 2 songs I should expect.

Ferocious, post-VU-sounding band. Produced by Alan Mair? Never knew that.

“Miles From Nowhere,” for one, has something interesting going on with the drums as well.

one year passes...

The only thing I ever had was Special View, which is not a good place to start, I've been told on ilm, but his sheepy whiney voice was what turned me off, don't know how much another producer or better songs could do to fix that (songs might've been ok, but voice v. distracting)

Peel Sessions is the one to get.

That's what I'm told, but vox demotivates me even to check those Peel tracks posts. Speaking of Squeeze, they're gonna tour w Psy Furs.

The old compilation “immortal story” is very good, but I love the voice. “The beast” is my fave but the Peel version is definitely better.

I put the 1st CD of the Sanctuary 2CD on and my player refused to play it. Need to fix player still.
Otherwise would have that first l.p. and a half on rotation this week.
Do enjoy those first 2 anyway and whatever live stuff I've heard. Guitar gets more ballroom patchy live QMS like in places.
Perret wound up being sent to school at Bancrofts which was across the road from my grandparents. I think he came from the other side of London though.

2CD set is Why Don't You Kill Yourself on Edsel not Sanctuary. Pretty good though either way.

If you don't like Peter Perrett's voice you're not going to get very far with the Only Ones.

Well maybe---in more recent times, I've learned how to listen around the singer when I like the band well enough to try, and these musos did sound better when I tried Special View on a better stereo than mine. What the hell, I might like him better now too.

Special View is a great place to start, who says otherwise?

Surely enough versions for a tribute album.
