Tim F, now is your time to shine.

Not The Other One (Mr Andy M), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:52 (thirteen years ago)

Where does the line come between funky, jackin and afrobeats? I still don't really understand the differences clearly.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 26 July 2012 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not ignoring this thread btw.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 July 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think afrobeats really has a line (because afrobeats is an umbrella term rather than a genre or scene per se), there could be funky afrobeats and for that matter jackin afrobeats if the artists in question fancy it.

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 July 2012 21:25 (thirteen years ago)

Where does the line come between funky, jackin and afrobeats? I still don't really understand the differences clearly.

Well I'm not an expert either but I think it mostly comes down to the different kind of beats. Funky = beats with clave/3:2 type snare patterns at about 130bpm. Jackin = much straighter-sounding beats with the snares on the 2 and the 4 in each bar. I think Jackin tunes tend to be slightly slower too, closer to 120bpm but could well be wrong on this.
Afrobeats is a bit more diverse and harder to pin down. Some of the beat patterns are def similar to Funky, but the genre covers a lot of different types of beats at different tempos. The main thing that marks it out is obv the influence from African music, and a lot tunes have vocals or MCing done in West African accents + patois. That's the other thing that separates it from Funky and Jackin, it's more heavily vocal/song orientated.

Not The Other One (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 26 July 2012 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

why does it have such a terrible name

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 26 July 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

Terrible names are just a tradition in uk dance music at this stage tbh.

Not The Other One (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 26 July 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

Great name duh.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

is this a thing? how is it different to...house music

these were basically the only tracks on the summer jams thread that weren't amazing, right?

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:12 (thirteen years ago)

wrong.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:22 (thirteen years ago)

hey i put dj ma1 in mix and you still don't listen whys that

the late great, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

i'm sorry i misunderstood this to be about acid house, not a subgenre of funky

the late great, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:25 (thirteen years ago)

It's not really different to house music (at this stage) - comparable to late 06 / 07 funky in that regard, with different sonic reference points.

Which means it has roughly the same capacity for greatness as you might expect of music "not really different to house music" - quite a lot as it turns out! But I'm not obsessed with it the way I was with funky this time four years ago.

I can't post youtubes at the moment but suffice to say Hannam and Garnett's "you want me" is total top five of the year.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:27 (thirteen years ago)

i am ignoring this thread btw

r|t|c, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:29 (thirteen years ago)

what a terrible start to the thread.

Good luck with this Tim, this stuff comes in for a hella amount of stick. I'm sick of trying to defend it to people already.

Benny B, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

Haha. Use of "partisans"?

Tim F, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

Tim F, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

"you want me" just made me want to listen to the sadie ama original

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

afaik 'jackin' house' takes some of the elements of bassline but combines with a more traditional house (or maybe electro-house) palette. it's fun and it reminds me of when producers from the grime/garage/dubstep scenes started fuckin' with house properly and there was a year or so where it felt like that music could really go anywhere.

in my personal exp. the ppl i know who are heavily into uk-centric dance music scenes don't really seem to fuck with house that much (apart from a few uk ppl who are deemed releveant). i attribute this (and i could be totes wrong) to house being so daunting and ~unknowable~ where as grime or garage or whatever is more easily geeked over and fetishised. so for me, when these uk producers open up their sound in this way it is really exciting and opens up so many possibilities.

big fan of that nick hannam ft. tom zanetti track & the nick hannam track that samples robin thicke. there really is very little separating 'you want me' sonically from the house music that is massively popular in london/rest of europe rite now apart from the AWESOME, AWESOME rap. always find it interesting to see on facebook how the tom zanetti raves seem to have hot creations house ppl and big garage names on the same bill.

hardhouse banter (tpp), Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:34 (thirteen years ago)

also notwithstanding that several of my favourite dance tracks of the year are based on r&b samples, i am sick to death of listening to new dance songs and hearinga familiar cut-up voice hove into view today

i hear one which sampled "promise" yesterday - i forget where or what, it doesn't matter - and literally turned to yell at the computer. LEAVE CIARA ALONE

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

^ I'll give You Want Me a listen in a bit (got the radio on just now).
I think the main thing that's holding me back with this genre is something like... there's been a few tunes I've heard that I've liked a lot (mostly ones posted on that 'Certified Jacking' youtube channel), but they've seemed like 'exceptions to the rule' kind of tunes, and I don't like being in that kind of relation with a genre. Part of why I fell so hard for funky is that at its peak (for me) I could love the whole breadth of vibes right across the scene. But there's been tonnes of Jackin' tunes that people have showed me and I've just felt like 'nah that's naff' and a lot of them as far as I know are fairly representative of where the sound is at right now.
I'm aware this all sounds like hand-wringing.
(xpost to Tim)

Not The Other One (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

I think Hannam is signed to Hot Creations now?

it was the dva remix which i thought just sounded surprisingly like a good ny tribal / deep house track, ditto most stuff i like on roska kicks snares

dissensus thread is awesome

like we have all these big name producers with no sense of a sound, no scenius, all their releases such a big deal, and none of that hardcore vibe of producers just putting out fuck loads of tunes that just do the business on the dance floor

vahid in that case there are about 20 billion sunday roast productions waiting for you.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 July 2012 23:55 (thirteen years ago)

oh nice

are they any good or are they like 20 billion jamie jones associates

the late great, Thursday, 26 July 2012 23:56 (thirteen years ago)

in case there's any confusion i mean "i'm leaving" which basically sounds like a slightly more afrocaribbean ("africanism?") version of the nuyorican soul thing

the late great, Thursday, 26 July 2012 23:57 (thirteen years ago)

i always pitch it way up too, if anything it's too laid-back and straight

some are good but it gets pretty wearying.

I've only started listening to some of this, there seems to be a love of sampling really super recognizable vocals & wacky clips from movies.

so this is basically moombahton at a faster tempo?

boxedjoy, Friday, 27 July 2012 10:03 (thirteen years ago)

i would send you a link tim but of course like jamie jones associates and sunday roast productions there are 20 billion online mixes to listen to and some are good but it gets pretty wearying

the late great, Friday, 27 July 2012 10:06 (thirteen years ago)

having said that it's in the first mix / newest mix here but i don't think you'll care much for it because it's not about scenius it's about my imaginary world where everything is one big detroit continuum

the late great, Saturday, 28 July 2012 05:38 (thirteen years ago)

After having the owl/ufo bass from 'You Want Me' running in my head for two days straight, I have to say Jackin is growing on me. I think the electro part turned me off initially, but the skippy beats, warpy owl bass, cheeky/cheesy samples, and blatant drugginess on some of these tracks is winning me over.

Astrochimp32, Saturday, 28 July 2012 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

I think I like about half of those youtubes. Was vibing quite a bit to Away We Go earlier. A lot of the tunes I like sound a bit like slightly slower, slightly straighter equivalents to the garagey bits DJ Q plays. A lot of this stuff has an enjoyable effortless sort of feel to it. Might try and post more coherent thoughts later, but yeah I'm coming round to it a bit.

Seriously who the hell came up with the name? There's only one kind of jackin house. It's from Chicago and it existed two decades ago. And by jackin they really meant JACKIN. I don't hear any jack here.

jamie duggan CHOOOOOOOON

ok i get it, this just sounds like a mersh version of stuff i already really like (old classic records, well rounded, julio bashmore, etc) w/ added bassline emphasis

my initial reaction is that this IS kind of like the same sort of blend i'm going for right now, but when the bassline is not interesting or the vocalist is not charismatic it is neither more nor less boring than when the same thing happens in yr average carl craig track

also that it's waaaaaay too slow

the late great, Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:15 (thirteen years ago)

like in the carl flanagan track, it reminds me of this documentary or something i saw about "style" as applied to battle dancing (i don't know if it was about locking and popping or voguing or soul dance or what) and somebody was like "sometimes you watch someone dance and you wonder if they imagine what it's like for other people to look at them or if they don't give a shit about style"

that's how the "epic build" and "off-key-ness" of carl flanagan makes me feel, an undeserved victory lap around the fruity loops manual

the late great, Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:17 (thirteen years ago)

if its LFO owls you want, that'd be Nick hannam's 'Homeless' or Cause & Affect's 'Don't like to do that' - not 'You want me' as astrochimp said

Benny B, Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:18 (thirteen years ago)

As with funky it's often played pitched up - though on some records (e.g. "You Want Me") the original speed works better in my opinion.

The Rise of Owl-Bass (Mr Andy M), Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:49 (thirteen years ago)

I love those the owl bass on those two, Benny, those are much better examples. The part of 'You Want Me' I've had stuck in my head is that eerie UFO/ghost sound that comes in at the beginning of the track, before the bassline, that then becomes more high-pitched and bird-like around 2:23 in that youtube clip.

Astrochimp32, Monday, 30 July 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

owl bass? isn't this just like 1990 bass?

the late great, Monday, 30 July 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

Tim F, Saturday, 4 August 2012 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

really? thank you. i'm most of the proud of the "champion sound" bit at the beginning of the first blake baxter thing.

so am i deliberately misinterpreting aspects of the sound ... or rather am i ignoring (specifics of geography aside) that separates, say, standard bobbins and what rob might call predigested fact-ulum from the more vibrant funky and jackin scenes ... or would you just say i'm shoehorning everything into a frankendance sort of mush?

i'm really too old to follow developments in all continents and scenes but i wish i had kept up more w grime and funky now

the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 22:39 (thirteen years ago)

i often get the same sense listening to some of this music as i do listening to herbert's "let's all make mistakes" and whatnot

the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

Well I don't think your mix has anything to do with "jackin house" within the meaning of this thread, unsurprisingly!

The thing with funky is - or was - less for me about socio-geographical borders than a certain kind of overriding logic of groove that might not be apparent on a track by track basis. Pulling, say, Champion or (at the absolute opposite end of the funky spectrum) DJ MA1's remix of "I'm Leaving" into orbit with techno and tech-house and dubstep and etc. makes even those tracks feel very different.

This is probably at least in part a result of the fact that funky could perhaps have been described as a certain perspective on house rather than a full-fledged individual genre. I guess that precariousness is maybe why I have always tried to insist on distinctions from a critical perspective; funky didn't have the obvious distinctiveness of uk garage, whereby if you dropped a 2-step tune into a different genre mix it usually still sounded like... a 2-step tune.

(so 'predigested fact-ulum' is in some cases a certain light or framing that may be there or may not be - although then of course some tracks/artists adopt that vibe irrevocably).

Importantly though, cutting across genre lines doesn't always = frankendance, it depends on the strength of the through-line constructed (Let's All Make Mistakes is a paramount example of this).

An article I wrote recently for Audimat was basically me trying to set out a theoretical apparatus for the above but it's in French :-/

Tim F, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:15 (thirteen years ago)

right, so they just sound like particularly choppy or spacey broken beat or house tracks? i think a lot of sounds the way early "space disco" stuff like 90s idjuts, paper recordings, etc just sounds like tech house in that context (blending in w/ stuff like DiY)

personally i also think that's an argument for their strength

the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:18 (thirteen years ago)

i like the idea of fact music as a framing thing ... are FACT and BASS the same or different as superwords i wonder ;-)

the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

i should not post so fast

it reminds me of how early "space disco" tracks (90s idjuts, paper recordings, etc) just sounded like tech house at that time (blending in w/ stuff like DiY)

the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

makes even those tracks feel very different

what's interesting to me is that as a sheltered listener that's pretty much how those tracks "feel" to me, it doesn't sound like an incongruous transition or trick to me anymore than playing blake baxter with derrick may or eon with moodymann

the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:26 (thirteen years ago)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 12:42 (thirteen years ago)

Would love to see a Jackin' Refix of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Kiss"

...also there was an amazing snippet of a Jamie Oliver track ("Doin' Time") floating around on a random club vid posted on Dissensus. Pretty sure it snatched its vocals from a Sublime song.

I'm starting to like this stuff almost as much as I did Funky back in the early days.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 6 June 2013 07:37 (thirteen years ago)

there's a sequel/remix to that now which is even better and weirder... in true jackin style they called it "dorothy's armpit"

r|t|c, Thursday, 6 June 2013 11:21 (thirteen years ago)

Must hear it, that track is amazing, darkside vibes. Chris Lorenzo is some kind of genius.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 6 June 2013 11:50 (thirteen years ago)

ya it's on one of the recent 2:31 rinse sets but i forget which unfortunately

r|t|c, Thursday, 6 June 2013 11:51 (thirteen years ago)

22nd of May is Lorenzo and Shorterz, I'll try that.

lol

Thanks for chasing that down. Amazing. I think I need to hear the rest of this show.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 6 June 2013 12:05 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I did she that she has a show. I'm going to try and catch her in London this month.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 6 June 2013 12:06 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the 2:31 shows are v good... not wild omg stuff the way jackin nuum hype (or the marcus nasty 2012 sets) implies but a true representation of how the midlands crew puts its spin on today's house n bass sphere. strictly speaking i don't see jackin as really existing any more tbh, at least not the way it did last year

think you'll find as you listen your question on the ukpopbass thread answers itself better than anyone could possibly tell you (within ten thousand words anyway)

r|t|c, Thursday, 6 June 2013 12:24 (thirteen years ago)

I need to dig deeper and follow those guys more closely, but the midlands house sound, whatever you want to call it, has a druggier, ravier vibe than anything else in UK dance I've heard for a while. This show from the 29th has more echoey, stutter vision, deep house effects circa late 90s early 00s than anything on the pop thread (but also with Bassline inflections)

It is also clear that Hannah Wants has shifted into a slightly more "sophisticated" sound than what she was playing when I checked her mixes out last year. Kind of hope she doesn't go further down that path though. Her mixtape 0513 is pretty much perfect imo.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 6 June 2013 12:45 (thirteen years ago)

I love tunes like "Dorothy's Forest" and "Kneadin" that are basically these compulsive broken machine loops, like they take the name "jackin" way way way more seriously than everything else does.

Tim F, Thursday, 6 June 2013 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

Tim F, Thursday, 6 June 2013 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

Vocal on "Kneadin" reminds me of Omni Trio.

Also great, very late 90s prog-house to my ears...

r|t|c, Friday, 14 June 2013 01:09 (twelve years ago)

Haha, was listening to a 2:31 set and thinking "what the fuck is this amazing tune?", then realised it could only be "Dorothy's Armpit".

"The Tickle" is great too, yes.

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 21:59 (twelve years ago)

if it happens to be the 5th june one then there's a tune of c&a's at 54 mins or so that is thee very zenith of yr "compulsive broken machine loops", more or less just a clanking 8 bar riddim

on the most recent 12th june they actually premier an official(!) remix of a new newham generals tune and they sound to the grimey manor born. so nice to hear d double on something decent again!

r|t|c, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 22:12 (twelve years ago)

Yeah it's the 12th June set I'm listening to. Will listen to the 5th.

What's the baile funk sampling tune later in the 12th set? That also fits the bill perfectly.

Also the remix of "Jack" at 89 minutes.

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 22:19 (twelve years ago)

Which I should stress is totally amazing.

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

i'm just getting round to the second hour of 12th june now, left it at the newgens track

the best periods of these last couple of shows have been when they just get their heads down and do banging driving in-the-pocket house sets (like what normals think of jackin i suppose) only with the current tools at hand. very exciting, makes me want to get a gym membership

also their occasional throwback record of the week slot is invariably excellent and cratediggy, i must go back thru and note them all down

r|t|c, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 22:23 (twelve years ago)

Actually I think it's the track just before "Jack" I'm talking about.

Real time education going on here.

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 22:23 (twelve years ago)

Haha yes I've already tested the first half of this set at the gym, it's a perfect soundtrack.

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 22:24 (twelve years ago)

the funny thing about these sets is that for me they've rekindled my enthusiasm for jackin (well, belief in its agency rather) but also made me surer than ever that viewing jackin as some wild isolated sui generis tribe is totally the wrong way to gain any meaningful purchase on it

basically i think these might the first mixes that arent just a showcase of great tracks but articulate the true vibe fully

r|t|c, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 22:37 (twelve years ago)

http://soundcloud.com/pete-graham/pete-graham-lorenzo-marina

oh the baile funk sampling tune!

omg i hear the the other one now. the wild west themed one with train crossing bell? idk what it is but YES it's brilliant

god i love how they either mix in or actually interpolate parts of 'marina gasolina' preceding to give it the full touch of evil mexican border town lawless twilight vibe

r|t|c, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 23:01 (twelve years ago)

the funny thing about these sets is that for me they've rekindled my enthusiasm for jackin (well, belief in its agency rather) but also made me surer than ever that viewing jackin as some wild isolated sui generis tribe is totally the wrong way to gain any meaningful purchase on it

Yes, I've struggled with the question of whether enjoying jackin' in the context of, say, a DJ Q set, is getting a misreading on it the same way I would have considered to be the case for someone approaching funky via Oneman or whoever. Like, is there something inherently point-missing about the polystylistic pick'n'mix appraoch?

Obv. a key difference is the nature/character/context of the person doing the picking and mixing. But it also just feels like jackin' itself is less interested in constructing its own soundworld, is more open to and curious about the world around it, forms a cluster of intensity within a broader disseminated vibe-chain rather than establishing its own nation-state-of-vibe.

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 23:06 (twelve years ago)

yeah like i mean take for instance 'jack' playing now, at first you think oh right it's 'jack' big tune on the scene etc etc. but listen closer and isn't the crucial kinda weirdly queasy animal groaning that makes the track (counterintuitively not erotic at all in juxtaposition with the vocal) such a move totally at home amongst jackin - absolutely not appropriated by in dialogue, but something already there that jackin waxes and wanes on as it suits it

r|t|c, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 23:20 (twelve years ago)

and after that the same taiki & nulight mix of ray foxx that dj q played just to underline the point

r|t|c, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 23:23 (twelve years ago)

Agreed re "Jack". BUT! What is that oh holy fuck amazing broken machine loop at about 111 minutes??

Tim F, Thursday, 20 June 2013 09:30 (twelve years ago)

don't know but this is the wild west one you two were talking about upthread:

https://soundcloud.com/justin-martin-music/db087-01-justin-martin-and

there's also one simple reason i think that makes 2:31 shows more vibey and exciting than yr average jackin/house & bass mix: tunes being mixed in and out relatively quickly! i mean selection-wise 2:31 obviously has its own quirks of course (tons of C&A, Shorterz' euro-leanings) but mostly it's the same tunes you get in other jackin/h&b mixes, with the difference that those other mixes usually feel plodding coz the tunes drag out for cca 4 mins and here it's all fast-paced whizz-bang stuff - which is how it should be, 'proper' house tunes usually peak several mins in but this stuff lays out all its wares as soon as it can so it does not lend well to trad house mixing really

Mind Taker, Thursday, 20 June 2013 10:07 (twelve years ago)

v true of course. kinda starting to wonder if there's actually any type of music that i wouldnt enjoy as long as it was mixed hard n fast

doh yes it is indeed 'wheelgunner'. rmde epic diligence fail since not only do i see i must have heard it in mixes loads of times but i already seem to have the dirtybird players comp on here

mt would you also happen know what the very linear bouncy number is they play with the breathy "couldnt do this without you" male croon?

r|t|c, Thursday, 20 June 2013 10:51 (twelve years ago)

BUT! What is that oh holy fuck amazing broken machine loop at about 111 minutes??

― Tim F, Thursday, 20 June 2013 10:30 (1 hour ago) Bookmark

tim surely you havent failed to recognise your own beloved 'kneadin'??

oh wait but the clanker i was on about upthread is there at 118 mins actually

r|t|c, Thursday, 20 June 2013 10:54 (twelve years ago)

No 111 minutes not 71 minutes!

Tim F, Thursday, 20 June 2013 12:02 (twelve years ago)

And by the same token do you meant the clanker at 78 minutes? Because that's some serious clanking action.

Tim F, Thursday, 20 June 2013 14:13 (twelve years ago)

Also Mind Taker is spot on with the analysis. Further to that point these machine loop tunes like "Wheelgunner (Dub)" arguably don't even work as standalones, the trick is in how Shorterz and Cause & Affect drop into them and then mix out as soon as possible into something else.

Tim F, Thursday, 20 June 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)

am slightly more predisposed to Youngman's style than to Gartner's and *still* can easily off the top of my head name several Gartner's tunes i've enjoyed while struggling with Youngman - WG's Britney remix is up there with the best of mersh electrohouse, JY's best can barely compete with, say, the grooveliciousness of Jason Hodges' "Sweat of Your Brow" rmx or delirious all-out wackiness of Soydan's "Running with the Beat"

(sorry for furthering the thread derail but i rarely get a chance to ramble on about this sort of stuff!)

Granted it's a mix of tracks from only one producer, but still, thanks for this! Awesome!

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 20:52 (twelve years ago)

oh niice, thanks for bumping

JEFF 22 (Matt P), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 21:00 (twelve years ago)

YES. Excellent mix.

Starting with "Darlin" is kinda inspired too.

Tim F, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 21:54 (twelve years ago)

shamefully - and god knows why - this is the only Benny's recent ukg-related mix i haven't checked out yet

when i saw the tracklist i was puzzled/intrigued by the omission of several HUGE tunes that have become available between the two Lorenzo volumes ("Money Cant Bye It"! "Shake It"! "Stronger Than Me"! "Moving Closer"! "Trouble"!) - guess i'm so used to a somewhat sturdy consensus on key jackin tunes that i tend to forget that not everyone has to have the same taste as me? or maybe the mixmaster just wants to keep a few aces up his sleeve for the third volume, who knows ;)

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:27 (twelve years ago)

"Kneadin" is the biggest tune not included IMO. Also some days my tune of 2013.

Tim F, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:28 (twelve years ago)

not out yet, forthcoming on Dirtybird (and yes, it's fantastic!)

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:32 (twelve years ago)

Yeah that wasn't a knock at Benny B! TBH I'm astonished at his painstaking collation of the tunes included on these mixes.

Tim F, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:37 (twelve years ago)

oh wow, cheers guys you made my day :)

mind taker: would have definitely put 'shake it' on there, didn't know it was available. Must confess I don't think I know the other tracks you mention! Could easily do another volume right now but there'd be too many old tracks on there so I'm gonna wait a while. 'Kneadin' is obviously fantastic.

my fave recent one is the C&A remix of Stanton Warriors' 'Cut me up' which is absolutely monstrous. It was a free download I think and I included it on this new ukg mix I did

https://soundcloud.com/tomgarnett11/tom-garnett-lorenzo-trouble-1

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:03 (twelve years ago)

god cant believe money cant buy it passed me by, definitely hunting that mutha down.

i sse now i've got(and adore) 'trouble', was an oversight i guess. there really is just too many great tunes to keep track of

Benny B, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:11 (twelve years ago)

well there's certainly much less great '& Lorenzo' tunes now that Cause & Affect have crossed over to the semi-big leagues but the C&A 2013 output makes up for it big time imo

btw i *super* enjoy dipping into the 2:31 rinse shows every now and then... on the face of it C&A would appear to be the weaker link, what with them tending to play the same tunes over and over again, but it's really at its best when both them and Shorterz are at it - Shorterz always has a superb warmzy selection but struggles ramping the energy levels up, C&A bits bang but they can't do groovy warm-up to save their lives, put them together and it's magic

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:23 (twelve years ago)

Haha that take on 2:31 is both something I actually agree with and structurally designed for me to agree with (like I would assume it was correct even if I'd never heard a 2:31 set).

Tim F, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:28 (twelve years ago)

agree about the 2:31 shows i've heard too, haven't checked for a few weeks though

the craic is from datwun at dissensus is lorenzo engineers all of shorterz' tunes as well, for some reason he doesn't get credited as collaborator.

Benny B, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:34 (twelve years ago)

perfectly human to lose track of the constant stream of aceness lorenzo's involved in tbf - plus ime it's quite common with a lot of jackin for the functional genius not to scream itself out on first skim (take for instance, idk, 'rude boy' or '21' or something - you see what it is immediately but feel it only in situ)

anyway

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gh0eLQcRtjY

and of course

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QOCvlio9KE

also search out cause & affect ft jamie george 'another time', and most pleasingly the new hw&l remix of jessie ware 'confess to me' which is no fireworks iirc but perfectly corrects the original into just what you wanted it to be

r|t|c, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:40 (twelve years ago)

haha i must say despite (or perhaps wood-for-the-trees because of) listening to 2:31 religiously i've never really detected too much difference between who's playing. and the "warm up" sections always seem pretty lively to me! shorterz picks out the great odd bit though, especially on poppy soulful songful lines - most recently saarid ft javi 'future lately' on nurvous from a few years ago but pitched right up

idk how to put it really, you just feel the enthusiasm with him, that pure hunger to find bits and not just scrape by playing promos he gets sent

kinda sadface that there hasn't been another bdot/jonarr-dotzz mor flip since 'rhythm's gonna get you'. he had such a gift for them!

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 00:04 (twelve years ago)

yeah thats another tune i'm after.

still, at least with twilight zone the 'Grizzle' micro-genre is coming along nicely :)

Benny B, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 00:12 (twelve years ago)

hmm i am not familiar with this term, please advise

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 00:19 (twelve years ago)

i swear i keep seeing it as tag on soundcloud, can't seem to find any examples now. I'd been wondering if anyone else had noticed this and its not just my imagination. Anyway the tunes I associate it with are C&As 'joe grizzly' and obviously the recent pete graham & loz ones and a few others. You know the type

Benny B, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 00:27 (twelve years ago)

yunno, the super abstract stygian soundworlds ;)

Benny B, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 00:34 (twelve years ago)

right ya i figured :)

was pondering if it mightve been a wordmash like grindie rather than a figurative like grime, but mainly i hadn't reckoned on 'joe grizzly' being in the lineage

grizzle... yeah i could get into it, beats 'weird jackin' at least

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 08:15 (twelve years ago)

I will stan for any music designated "grizzle" on principle.

Tim F, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 08:20 (twelve years ago)

this grizzle stuff is a heady mix of stuff to try and tagcloud up

vonstroke/dirtybird, lo end big beat/hi concept ninja tune triphop (someone like dj vadim idk), old skool 8bar/grime thuggery thru to whatever you would categorise someone new wave like woz in... etc

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 08:25 (twelve years ago)

it's great on 2:31 when they have occasional little moodpiece periods of playing this stuff together... you have all this house n bass mayhem and then you just absentmindendly drift off for a little uneasy while

vonstroke 'can't wait' is usually somewhere at the heart of it

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 08:29 (twelve years ago)

"Kneadin" is the biggest tune not included IMO. Also some days my tune of 2013.

yeah woz did spring to mind, something like the remix of kry wolf's concrete maybe, those rock-hard electro beats with 808s. 'So special' by hw&loz even.

Tim F, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 01:50 (twelve years ago)

Wow @ Alyson Williams' "I Need Your Loving".

Tim F, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 01:56 (twelve years ago)

he done that brandy / ali love duet just for me, i know it

taking "autumn mixtape" at its word this is a beautifully judged just-loose-enough selection of chunky bangers and def a perfect showcase for shorterz' exemplary warm-up game wot i was talking about earlier

idk if it'll get the full ministry chart treatment but i kinda feel like the legit scandal 'fu gee la' refix might come back around in a bigger fashion next year, rap samples are totally on the come-up right now in every strain of house and this one's hanging in there in that particular way

alyson williams, jazzie b and nellee hooper innit nuff said. funnily enough i've recently been thinking about how the ldn shuffle scene is kinda maybe opening up a space for a different take on our beloved s&m streetsoul nuum but it's still too liminal to commission an official advisory document just yet i think

r|t|c, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 10:59 (twelve years ago)

s&m streetsoul nuum

perfect

is there even a shuffle tune I could listen to that hints towards that.

Tim F, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)

erm well i honestly wasnt trying to be oblique for the sake of it, it doesnt really lend itself to a nutshell, just mystic divination via shitloads of listening sadly

http://soundcloud.com/officialrhyscat/rhys-cat-one-life

really this is the one that pushed it over the line for me, i guess it might not seem so much in a showy way but for something in its fashion to win an acceptance in this age does feel quite fresh, something long-dormant awakening

i mean everyone sorta knows the deal with shuffle by now, like what it's supposed to be - the narcotic introversion, stalking industrial bleak anomie, shade of bleep hardcore submarine sonorities and/or leather jacket geezer 8bar like jon e cash or w/e (also heard radford remark on one tune as "like a metalheadz version of house"), portentous digital boogie, some of it hot creations tongue-in-cheek, verging but rarely tipping into a jagged dexplicit/ballroom mania - one soundcloud tag had it as "3d house" which i quite like - these kinda revolving schematic polygonal mesh wireframe vertices and such, "cutting shapes" after all. 3d house also works best like 3d from massive attack who perhaps better exemplify the moody vox sample matrix than s&m, although there are some dubwise capers at play i feel

Absolutely love that stripe of funky tune that's like vaguely lethargic menacing bug-eyed 3am post-"Killer R&B-house - this, the Major Note$ remix of J-Will's "Deja Vu", the O.B. remix of Addictive's "Domino Effect"...

carnao 'get out' obviously the precursor blueprint for the vibe - sounding like terence trent d'arby as u said at the time - mark radford and lance morgan actually have one that samples lenny kravitz 'fly away'. a constellation might include

rtc, you had a bit of a turn-around on shuffle now then? I'm still not fully immersed, and don't have much of a grip on artist/tracks titles yet but been vibing off those House Ent. November live sets this week, you heard them? Good stuff. All the talk upthread of post 'killer' streetsoul boogie house seems like such a great idea and I agree some tunes are moving in this direction, not sure if its quite there yet though. Love that 'Gone in the morning' choon.

Benny B, Thursday, 28 November 2013 11:13 (twelve years ago)

only heard the lance morgan one, good energy start but seemed to tail off into linearity after 15 mins... don't feel i've had altogether too much luck with live sets really, mainly i've become diligent about radford's shows - he's not quite the marcus of shuffle but they do feel more essentially concentrated for being a touch hungrier and more varied (him tracklisting clearly also helps a lot). however yeah i'm not all in by any means and wouldnt quite yet consider any set i've heard for agnostic presentation

idk basically i was feeling like my uk aesthetics had maybe not ossified but coagulated in a way that was preventing me seeing the wood for the trees with this stuff so i p much just blasted it non stop until the arterial crit blockage was forcibly dislodged :)

and yeah must stress the s&m proposal is inchoate to the point of wishful... still though, that rhys catania tune is very striking and i did stick on the carlton album again after my last post and if u squint ur ears the palette is really not too dissimilar tbh.... maybe i'll anonymously send the 'do you dream' accapella to carnao or something for a giggle

'gone in the morning' a choon indeed, lol at them being trying to be mysterious and evasive abt whether it was donaeo! completely unrelated to this all moody dubby biz but mark radford and false identity's remix of luke burr 'inside you' (public demand cash-in cover of victor romeo) is an absolute future summer bubbler worth seeking out

the lance morgan was my fave out of those november sets (the arun verone one is also worth a listen). ha beautiful stuff. this is a freebie now too i just spotted, still the absolute nuts

http://soundcloud.com/tomgarnett11/tom-garnett-chris-lorenzo-2

funnily enough (well it's fairly logical and probably just confirmation bias but hey intersectionalism) as shuffle gains little footholds in the wider house world it doesnt seem as awk as it did a few weeks ago to talk about it and jackin simultaneously, some bits are starting to turn up in 2:31s and this mix in particular has a fair smattering of crossover

http://soundcloud.com/tom-shorterz/tom-shorterz-rinse-x-02-31-1

shorterz' own 'baby' tune there especially unexpected imo. on the other side of things shuffle has its moments too - low steppa in the audio rehab fold now for one and in the new radford set there's a brill new false identity tune called 'let the bass roll' round the half hour mark that's a zincish funk break roller i'd wager cause and affect would be proud to call their own. might rip it later tonight but the whole set's sounding as good as any to check out in full i'd say

Jackin basically continues to be the best party music there is

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 5 December 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)

It's been interesting hearing Hannah Wants straddling the line in her sets between jackin and the moodier (and chartier) uk house bubblers - she never QUITE abandons her jackin roots and there's no doubt the two sides of the coin go together quite comfortably, but it feels to me like there's something irreducible and un-co-optable about straight jackin tunes, a willful narstienesss that stakes them to the underground come hell or high water

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 5 December 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

i realize i'm tempting the gods by saying "un-co-optable" but fuck it

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 5 December 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

lol at but <3 'annoying little dweeb', and woah this new marc spence ep is fucking sick! Remember hearing that tune 'be there' a few weeks on some show (2:31 probably?) and nearly doing my neck in. File next to the brilliant Pete Graham 'friends' release from last month.
https://soundcloud.com/marc-spence/marc-spence-collaborations-ep

rtc, i haven't listened yet to the shorterz and radford sets you mention above, but you mentioning a 'zincish funk break roller' has got me thinking about early noughties breakbeat garage in relation to jackin'. The tuff steppin' n risin' bassline on 'be there' sounds like beatfreakz or blowfelt or someone. then there was all the 4x4 stuff like narrows, dj wire, dj faz etc which also often reminds me of lorenzo's sound. i sometimes think of jackin as taking those essentially flawed garage offshoot genres and making perfection out it by adding a sense of humour. mind you, has anybody done a jackin hnb version of 'I don't smoke the reefer' yet? Cos it would make perfect sense and be kinda obvious.

anyway not got much to add about the shuffle/jackin convergence til i've listened to those sets this weekend.

Benny B, Thursday, 5 December 2013 23:40 (twelve years ago)

i suppose the very fact that dj pantha didn't really switch to jackin after bassline died, but became Arun Verone and blew up on the london scene must stand for something. Got the latest radford on now and notice he's dropping a few tunes from midlands producers too.

Benny B, Friday, 6 December 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)

woah yeah this 'let the bass roll' thing is totally c&a meets zinc!

Benny B, Friday, 6 December 2013 00:26 (twelve years ago)

aaah and now that luke burr remix, this set is ace so far, probably the best I've heard from this scene 1 hour in at least. I can see a few anthems getting in the coming year, it definitely seems to be on the very cusp of something or other. must admit im quite baked atm and this may not sound so good tomorrow, but i'm really, properly enjoying this one for a change rather than just trying to like it.

Benny B, Friday, 6 December 2013 00:58 (twelve years ago)

Benny B, Friday, 6 December 2013 01:02 (twelve years ago)

thats very thorough of you :)

haven't really been listening to radfords shows til now but if you could post one of the best ones with a tl it'd be appreciated. Would you say this nov 30 set is atypically varied and warmer sounding for him? Some of my faves on there are the icy, menacing ones from louie anderson and nightshift.

Benny B, Sunday, 8 December 2013 18:44 (twelve years ago)

yer man trilliam would likely know better than i tbh but yeah the sets have been gradually warming up i'd say - def an influx of new producer blood (from outside london probably tellingly) bringing a grimier energy vibe (showcased here to launch radford's new sublabel, although the tracks sound better still in the show context i think: http://soundcloud.com/plusrecordings/plus-recordings-promo-mix) and then yeah the introduction of the false identity and low steppa type bits has for the moment folded garagey fun back into the equation. picking up some rap samples too (where jackin of course led the way)

the 'old' guard so to speak (carnao, rs4, playtime, storm, d'vinci, louie anderson, nightshift, nrky) are still the crucial framework to the whole thing for sure though... i did actually listen to a couple of sets from february and july i still had knocking around just for comparison and in retrospect the aspects i like now probably were there then too (albeit arguably in a more mimetic chrysalis stage idk) and i'd just been uncharitable

r|t|c, Sunday, 8 December 2013 22:25 (twelve years ago)

set picked fairly at random (they're all quite even really, although the one with the shay & sinista guest mix recently that i believe you heard was a bit of a flop imo). iirc radford accidentally coins the splendid phrase "upgrunt house" here btw

got the 26th oct set on now. the odb remix!!!

Benny B, Monday, 9 December 2013 13:35 (twelve years ago)

Listening to these now. Everytime they use vocals it goes from good to brilliant: Truce's "Take Control"!

Need to check out that mix.

Lots of Rs4 tracks as well, never heard of them.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 12 December 2013 13:41 (twelve years ago)

rs4 actually happens to be oris jay

r|t|c, Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:44 (twelve years ago)

lol i would not have expected that

Tim F, Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:05 (twelve years ago)

Kind of makes sense. There's a definite progressive vibe to that first Mark Radford mix that ain't far off the vibe of Oris Jay's breakbeat garage back in the day.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:22 (twelve years ago)

All the dub effects and overall sense of urgency.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:24 (twelve years ago)

a few months old i know, but have to draw attention to this awesome track from Playtime Productions in case anyone missed it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MchTufJfgoA

but really anything I've heard from has been great - our kind, inevitable, cruel summer, sicker than your average, how to love me, born to die remix, just one kiss are all fantastic. They seem quite akin to jackin in their approach to samples and remixes. Probably my favourite producers out of this scene so far.

Benny B, Friday, 13 December 2013 00:25 (twelve years ago)

RS4's "Locked On You" is so massive.

srsly benny what can we say about this

r|t|c, Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:58 (twelve years ago)

oh my days...

this was actually wrongly id'd on dissensus (unless its a new remix or something) as a Majesty & Vanz track from this set https://soundcloud.com/majestydj001/siesta-nye-sidings-warehouse

seems like the tracks been around at least a year then. That Majesty set is sick btw if you haven't already heard it.

So the Paranoid Resistance EP on Rinse ("Smoke Machine" plus two new tracks) basically presents jackin' as a (more) stripped down versh of the Forgemasters:

Benny you are a superstar.

Tim F, Monday, 3 March 2014 22:59 (twelve years ago)

Funny how Smoke Machine is already such a deathless classic.

I remember first hearing it in a 2:31 track in July and totally loving it but kinda doubting myself, like "will I quickly get over what is such a slight track?"

But it's as compulsive now as it was then, more so maybe.

Tim F, Monday, 3 March 2014 23:01 (twelve years ago)

2:31 set, that is.

Tim F, Monday, 3 March 2014 23:01 (twelve years ago)

Tim F, Thursday, 13 March 2014 20:40 (twelve years ago)

my god this hannah wants ´roots´ is really something. no one really talks about this era of speed garage/bassline/funky house do they? only know one track (or even artist) on the whole thing.

Ruff Driverz – Deeper Love (Ruff Mix)

right away my interest is piqued

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:16 (eleven years ago)

yeah these glimpses into the secret lineage of the bigtunesmp3 nuum (if u like) (and by extension the bassline scene) are really fascinating

iirc other jackin scene characters (perhaps not the big hitters) have done similar soundcloud mixes albeit never tracklisted... some are like rave or piano organ house classics etc

on the 0231 shows shorterz has a couple times made intriguing reference to a birmingham scene or vibe where speed garage ruled presumably a lot longer or laid ruffer roots than it did elsewhere

tbh besides like idk madchester and bristol (and the odd fleeting derisory lol at donk or scouse house or w/e) how many of these localised histories beyond london ever see the light of recorded day - not to mention the extent to which london takes historical credit for groundswells elsewhere

i mean i guess "secret lineage" is exactly wrong tho - more like just the process of things being so popular they become forgotten and vice versa

Tim F, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 09:24 (eleven years ago)

that is a very nicely written press release. i feel i should point that out. thumbs up to that person.

like it sez, the ep totally is a great microcosm of the shows - they haven't tended to announce these tracks so it was a pleasant surprise to discover all these familiar bits were in fact c&a, especially as they'd been on a run of grimy bass devastators in remixing other people. ('dimensions' in partic is exactly like some great unassuming lil groover shorterz might have found on local talk or w/e) (thread of shorterz jams would be something i'd be happy to talk to myself in actually)

lorenzo's aptitude for hazy summer vibes lately is perhaps a bit underappreciated - the c&a mix of zinc 'show me', 'i wanna be'...

r|t|c, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 10:03 (eleven years ago)

Mistakes is all-time, obv. Great to have this official version.

Not sure I've heard the other ones before tho. Bird Flu sounds like it could belong on a Perlon release or something.

Somewhat perversely, I'd totally get this on vinyl if Rinse pressed it up. I'm increasingly reverting to some old school ways :)

i probably never mentioned it from chagrin for having eyerolled at tracer lumping them in with the duke dumont thread so many times :P

presuming hw&cl had nothing to do with its making it's a p delightful intuitive happenstance that that video should use all that retro tv footage and stuff, summoning as it does all the old creepy twilight zone sampladelic grizzle numbers (plus a nice extra dash of ballardian kink)

Shift K3Y - Touch (Chris Lorenzo Remix)
J. Phlip, Chris Lorenzo, High Priestess - Walls
J. Phlip, Chris Lorenzo- Lights
Keys N Krates - Understand Why (Chris Lorenzo Remix)
My Nu Leng - You've Been Gone (Chris Lorenzo Remix)

i still like to put on a playlist of all these occasionally (plus the cause & affect remixes of pantero666, ray foxx and grades too), they really are quite amazing... if the earlier stuff was stygian then this crop last year was like being cast into tartarus

idk i hope loz tries his hand at soundtracks or something someday, the claustrophic ~sound design~ is so outrageously good, always making me draw for the greek mythology analogies obv, low scrapes of chains along catacomb corridors, distant guttural roars and howling shrieks and hot furious breath of terrible pitiless deities #dancemusic

r|t|c, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 14:11 (eleven years ago)

otm

best #dancemusic producer of the decade so far, no contest

Benny B, Thursday, 19 March 2015 10:31 (eleven years ago)

the other thing that emphasizes best producer in a studio engineer sense (rather than best ex nihilo artist as such) is the fact that though he is so dominant he is also genuinely collaborative too, or at least works at his best bouncing off other people... like after the vice article you started seeing all these crass dickhead aspersions flying around about hannah wants' role in their stuff together, which is super dumb cos a hannah wants & lorenzo track is plainly distinct from any pete graham & lorenzo, from any donkie punch & lorenzo, from any c&a, etc. (i mean the bdot ones are literally probably him leaving loz 4am voicemails like "mate, mate... tina arena" but even still that's what had to happen to for those tracks to ever exist). and the same applies to his remixes too the way they feed off something in the original that isn't always component

this is a point that benny's comps have already underlined a thousand times obv

r|t|c, Thursday, 19 March 2015 11:42 (eleven years ago)

dont forget we've got the skrillex collab to look forward to this year!

ooh yeah that is alright. been meaning to have a think about 3000 bass, turning into a unexpectedly decent post-everything locus thing (see paleface now has some good bits on there)

"classic whack-on-a-few-random-acapellas-lying-on-the-desktop jackin" is true indeed but as we all know classic jackin also means anything-but-lazy casual savant genius production masterclass, which this is. even itself being called 'babycop' tbh! 1+1 to reference a third, ladycop, son of

i'm sure we could easily fill out the ids for all of that set now. was uncharted territory at the time!

holding a month at ~25 in the charts now

back in sept (and with 'darlin' before) i couldnt see what target & danny weed saw in rereleasing, i mean the tune remains forever a marvel but the context seemed long gone. i know better now - it was always a hidden jackin nation, never just yorks and mids - look at that towie/geordie shore video. over the last few months i've become addicted to this:

Real England

which blends a certain strain of current top 40 (analogous to kiss fresh daytime) with pure distilled wite flite banter, geezers all called dean raised on big chunky sugary sweet tooth pop garage breakbeat and 2step. this is a proper regulated fm dial station that plays richie dan 'call it fate', deetah 'relax (b&f mix)', blowfelt 'back up back up' at 2 in the afternoon

(it is also producing nothing whatsoever in terms of interesting new music but just anthropologically it's a rush)

well my first listen was last night when I bunged all the tracks into vdj, notched up the tempo and mixed through them, so that probably helped. i generally don't listen to these sort of things as albums anyway, just collections of tracks to dj with. the only one i actively disliked was 'we are', 'sleep talk' seemed like a highlight.

faint praise I know...

it's a house album, of course it's completely inessential

mad ting or wot. d double and steinski!!!!!

skippit is a mosh-bass-grime etc producer from southampton who i might have characterised as a delinquent younger sibling to royal-t - iirc he came to brief prominence late '14 with a whirring monster re-edit of flava d's 'in the dance' and for the most part has carried on in that marginal bootleg vein since

dj shadow interview samples and dusty breaks are the super extreme outlier obv but it's interesting to think of og jackin's morbidly amused chuck-it-in magpie restlessness resurfacing in whatever this current yoof scene is

Only the most tenuous ring-filtery connection to jackin tho really.

nice

just as an NB jclc, the 'jacking house' in that mix is the old-school chicago-style definition. this thread is about the birmingham, UK centred style of housey bass-driven garage with big nasty ring-filter sounds on the bassline

one of those extremely confusing bits of nomenclature, like the two quite different genres 'afrobeat' and 'afrobeats'

I regret posting US jacking house to the UK jacking house thread! still, a great mix

is birmingham jacking house related at all to birmingham techno (surgeon regis etc) or are we talking just completely different eras / scenes?
