Is there a single band/artist that EVERYONE can admit to liking?

Choopy (Rahul Kamath), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:41 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

no. we've tried this before.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:42 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

There's not. Me and a mate tried to do it with singles, the best we could come up with was "Son of A Preacher Man".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:43 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

let's try Minuteman. there was widespread agreement on D.Boon...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:44 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

everyone seems to like the Beach Boys, or at least accept that Brian Wilson was a genius....this is a far cry from when i was growing up when it seemed like only people over 35 or extremely retarded had any time for them...when did the Beach Boys become trendy again, assuming they werent throughout the late 70s to early 90s (seemed to be the case, but then i was naive ill-informed and somewhat unenlightened mook then)

blueski, Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:59 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I've never met anyone who disliked Otis Redding. I pity the fool that does, but I've not yet met him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:06 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

How about the Stone Roses (c. 1989)? I don't see how anyone could not like their first album at least.

iggy pop is useless.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:08 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Iggy pop is useless.

I agree. The Stooges are vastly overrated. And the Iggy-penned comments accompanying the re-mastered Raw Power album have got to be the most self-serving, self-aggrandizing liner notes I've ever seen.

Only a heartless person could take issue with Stevie Wonder's peak work, but there are heartless people in the world.

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:28 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Stevie Wonder? Surely crap like "I Just Called to Say I Love You," and his participation in "That's What Friends Are For" and "Ebony & Ivory" negate any merit his "peak work" may have earned him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:32 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Everyone loves something by Ministry!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:32 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

The Clash!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:35 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I don't recall anyone here saying anything bad about the Pixies. Though maybe I just don't read everything.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:36 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

do people dislike "celebration" because of its constant prescence at weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc.? besides "she's so fresh" makes up for that immediately!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:39 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Aaron beats me to the punch re "Fresh" (exciting! she's so inviting to meeeeeee!)

I also don't recall anyone saying completely dismissing Public Enemy -- maybe their stuff after 1991, but not their entire oeuvre. Though I could be wrong.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:42 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

the Beatles? I've only met one person in my life who claimed to completely hate the Beatles, but I suspected it was some kind of silly, reactionary thing...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:44 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

well it's still hate so it would count (if they were posting here) (i think senior lurker DG hates the beatles: he's a silly, reactionary thing too haha)

pinefox hates public enemy (ok that's a guess but i will eat kelley deal if i'm wrong)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:48 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I just saw Kool and the Gang over the summer in Baltimore. The crowd was mostly black and old enough to remember when those songs came out. This really added to the experience, as I would have hated to watch the show with anyone who though that liking Kool and the Gang was a way of being ironic.

Can I add... The Spinners, Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, Chaka Khan?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:50 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

in that recent White Stripes MOJO article Jack White says something to the effect that "anyone who says they don't like the Beatles doesn't really like music." Which strikes me as kinda true, but on the other hand maybe this should just go under the "irritating things musicians say" thread...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:53 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I don't like the Beatles. The Pixies only strike me as okay, pretty good - I don't love them. I do like them much better than the Stone Roses, though. Has anyone shot down the Beach Boys yet? Mark is joking with the Clash, but I think Pulp and James Brown are still going. A few more worth trying: Little Richard, Al Green, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Shangri-Las, T. Rex.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:54 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I don't like Pulp, but I can get behind James Brown and the Beach Boys (although I'm skeptical that there isn't at least one Beach Boys hata out there, because I personally know a great many). Not gonna touch why you don't like the Beatles...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:56 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

(i don't hate the clash, just some their songs and the way they ponce about) (so i wouldn't shoot em down here, except on the alex in nyc/stevie wonder principle up-thread, which is too harsh i think) (on the other hand i think there are several other more dedicated hatas than me)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:59 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

there have been a lot of threads regarding the beatles, and in general, it seems a lot of people can't come to terms with the idea that liking the beatles is something everybody HAS to do. I know that for me, personally, John Lennon's deification has affected my ability to listen to his solo work. But I am a pop loser, so I like McCartney more anyways.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:59 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I've never much liked any of their songs. I own loads of cover versions of their stuff by lots of my favourite singers, and they are invariably the worst moments on albums by Aretha, Al Green, Otis and others. Ordinary performers. By far the most overrated act ever. Imposed loads of bad paradigms, and led to a stupid respectability for pop.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:03 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

otis redding is the most overrated act ever martin

C'mon, the Beach Boys are hugely sad. Any band that counts Mike Love in its ranks and records tepid shit like "Kokomo" renders themselves utterly ridiculous. Consider them shot down.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:07 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

you can't shoot people down by highlighting the things even ppl who love them will hate!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:09 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

negate any merit his "peak work" may have earned him.

That's why I said take issue with his peak work, not with the "entirety of his career" or whatever. The crap can negate his merit, but not the merit of stuff like Talking Book, etc.

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:09 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

but this "they recorded some crap stuff therefore they are DISQUALIFIED" thing is ridiculous. I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once. Why does the object of ILM's shared love have to be infallible...?

Anyway, now I guess I'll just throw my weight behind T. Rex and James Brown, since the Beatles and the Boys seem like dubious contenders.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:10 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

alex is cheating so as to sneak Killing Joke in when we are all exhausted

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:10 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Some not mentioned. In chronological order Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima, Elvis presley, Kinks, Skatalites, New Vaudeville Band, Slade, Motorhead, Chic, Human League, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Saint Etienne.....There's no great unifying band or artist after 1991.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:12 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

err what about composers?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:24 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

If we go by Alex's "if someone has released crap they're shot down", I'd say Iggy Pop would be the first one to go. I dig "Search & Destroy" as much as the next guy, but what about that 80's catalogue? Brrrr....

I'm willing to bet I'm the only person on ILM who can't stand ABBA, and even I like a few songs.

Everyone loves *some* Kraftwerk for sure.

The closest I can get is I like Afrika Bambaata songs that sample 'em.

T. Rex.

Eh, I think everyone could agree that they were OK, but do they really inspire widespread LOVE?

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:24 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I've disliked just about every band mentioned on this list, excepting New Order, whose recent work bores me anyway. The Beatles are an abomination.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:25 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

C'mon, I have to admit that even Killing Joke has released utter garbage (ladies & gentlemen, I give you OUTSIDE THE GATE), but let's remember the question: "Is there a single band/artist that EVERYONE can admit to liking?"

Personally speaking, no matter how great some of Stevie Wonder's stuff may be, I absolutely *LOATHE* some of his later work to the extent that I cannot bear to listen to *ANY* Stevie Wonder, and thus I cannot admit to liking him.

I do like the Pixies, the Clash, New Order, the Beatles, Kraftwerk, and Buzzcocks.

Daniel's spot-on about some of Ig's 80's work (let alone some of his 90's work)....some of which is irrefutably sub-par, but in the same way WL defends Stevie Wonder, I'll stand by Iggy. But, I suppose I can understand why some might not think he's exactly the messiah.

Has anyone mentioned the Rolling Stones as yet?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:33 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

how can you possibly nominate the Stones with their 25+ year track record of complete and utter shit, coupled with a monstrosity that has come to define rock n roll as a "business"?

Like you and Stevie Wonder, I honestly can't listen to the Stones anymore - even the stuff I used to love - without feeling sorta dirty and used. They're just such fucking trendhoppers and unrepentant whores.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:37 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Fair point, Shakey Mo.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:41 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I shoot down: Chackha Khan (occasional good stuff w/ Rufus doesn't excuse dreary solo career), Motorhead (like the occasional song, but too repetitive for me to LOVE 'em), Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Britney Spears, Bon Jovi, and for what it's worth Gene Loves Jezebell and Queen.

Now, if we assume that dave225 wasn't serious about not liking all candidates xcept James Brown (tho he could be, correct me if I'm wrong dave) that leaves us with:

James Brown

The Bay City Rollers

GWAR

The Cure

Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps

The Spinners

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes

Little Richard

Al Green

Buzzcocks

Undertones

The Shangri-Las

The Clash

Magazine

Louis Prima

The Skatalites

New Vauderville Band

Slade

Chic

Human League

St.Etienne

David Bowie

The Ronnetes

Mercury Rev

Johnny Cash

Can

AC/DC

Huey Lewis & The News

Madonna

Brian Eno

Marvin Gaye

Big Audio Dynamite

The Firm

The Bangles

Was Not Was

Joy Division

Abruptum

And, oddly enough:

Ted Nungent

Sproyton Layer

Eminem

Anal Count

Sammy Davis Jr.

(Graham's pre-1990 ban is just a sad and shows how out of touch he is with The Kids- I should know, I'm one.)

Contradiction, Shaky Mo? ;-) "

Sorry Ned, but my Rolling Stones comment was directed at AlexinNYC, who developed the "recording of crap=disqualified" rubrick. His nomination of the Rolling Stones is *his* contradiction (since he doesn't deny they've put out tons of embarassing shit). I wouldn't disqualify the Stones on those grounds, but Alex should have. I disqualify the Stones on the grounds that they really just aren't that fantastic, even at their peak. I don't love them. I'm sure there's plenty of people here who hate them.

If we are looking for something everyone likes, we have to accept blanket dismissals like Graham's, and we are almost certainly doomed. "I really do only like about three records made before 1990, is this so hard to understand?"

It is hard to understand, actually. Is it because it's "before your era" or something? Might it be that you simply haven't heard *ENOUGH* music that was recorded prior to 1990? Also, it's not like 1990 was some crucial watermark year like 1969 or 1977 (or ever 1994). Why 1990?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:51 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:43 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Um, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but saying you don't like David Bowie, especially saying you actually dislike David Bowie, given his MASSIVE influence on music and other assorted social implications (i.e. don't think for a second that DB didn't single-handedly cut a serious chunk of anti-gay preconceptions out of mainstream rock radio in his career), is kind of like saying you're really not all that with it, know what I mean? It's ok if you don't, but, you know, you're saying a lot of other things there, too.

It's like saying "I don't get Kraftwerk". The only response to that is I bet you don't get a lot of things...

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:15 (eleven years ago) Permalink

I try to get into Bowie every now and then, but I get rather bored with the music.

If I want glam I go T. Tex instead. If I want proto-new wave: I go Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt and Eno and Roxy Music. If I want theatrical art-rock I go Peter Hammill and Vandergraaf. If I want a record that is better proto-punk than Bowie I go Nadir's Last Chance. If I want weird psych-folk then, again, I go Tyrannosaurus Rex or even Tim Buckley. If I want orchestral, showtune weirdness then I go Scott Walker. If I want the best street-wise rock I go VU's Loaded. If I ever want guitar madness then I go the Sweet Sister Ray bootleg. Not to mention Alex Harvey, Steve Harley, Alice Cooper, the Cockettes, and Jobriath all fit in here somewhere.

Call us folks who don't suck Bowie's dick clueless but everywhere you turn are artists with greater vision than Bowie whom he cannibalized so he could turn himself into some mythical rock star legend.

As for the the "gay issue" so to speak, the Cockettes are super-esoteric but they challenged anti-gay stereotypes more radically than Bowie ever did.

Call us folks who don't suck Bowie's dick clueless but everywhere you turn are artists with greater vision than Bowie whom he cannibalized so he could turn himself into some mythical rock star legend.

Ok, this is pretty much spot on, and he's admitted as much, but that's part of his brilliance. Musicians are almost always the product of their influences- it's what influences they choose and how they build from them that defines their greatness. Bowie's choice of influences were exceptional, and in the process of chasing them he created his own unique vision.

As for the the "gay issue" so to speak, the Cockettes are super-esoteric but they challenged anti-gay stereotypes more radically than Bowie ever did.

Yeah but they never cracked mainstream pop and rock radio the way Bowie did. Disco-bashing, gun rack sporting, "Stones Rule!" "Stairway To Heaven is the best song EVER!" guys grew up listening to Bowie tracks and still loved him enough to keep him in that arena, despite all those rumors that he and Mick Jagger were playing leap frog, despite the fact that DB's stage persona had some serious ponce leanings.

Stand up to the crowd! Who cares what they think. If you like something, it shouldn't matter whether everyone else does or not. Who is more of a creature of the crowd: the one who sheepishly follows the crowd taste, or the one who always has a knee-jerk reaction against it?

Well, their songs usually just never seemed to me to have SONGS attached, which was the problem, I guess. mixed-gender pop groups - abba, s club, steps - usually come with this blue peter sheen to them which really distracts from any emotional import their lyrics would have in the hands of others; also the men, especially if they sing, tend to be completely superfluous to proceedings. i like songs here and there by all the above groups, but as entities i'm not particularly enthused.

I'm more mystified that people keep bringing up bands (Yo La Tengo, EC, Talking Heads, etc.) who have already been unceremoniously drummed out of the running... however yes, obviously the answer is "no" there is no band that everyone loves because there's always someone like Geir with a weird politico-aesthetic agenda who will refuse to see any value in a given canonical performer. Can think of quite a few people that will hate that once they hear it. Sounds okay if you like electronica though

the Dirt, Thursday, 19 April 2007 12:51 (ten years ago) Permalink

I dunno; I keep getting these indistinguishable promos in the mail - the Field, Field Music, Freezing Field etc. - and they all sound like bad Beta Band impersonations.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 19 April 2007 12:57 (ten years ago) Permalink

i'm sure i remember some music from the adam & his ants band

You are, I think, confusing them with Fields.

Os Mutantes?

Interestingly, if you google "I Hate Kraftwerk", most results are duplicates of someone saying "I Hate Kraftwerk... Not!"

the next grozart, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:18 (ten years ago) Permalink

the only proper google hit for "i hate adam and the ants" is class:

A similar game to kippering is the game of 'Aaaaah'! To win a round of Aaaah, simply get someone to correct a blatantly false statement. For example;

A and B are listenind to the radio. Wham!'s hit single Careless Whisper begins playing.
A : I hate Adam and the Ants
B : This isn't Adam and...
A : Aaaaah!

Really, if you can't hear the difference between The Field and Field Music, maybe its time to hang this whole "music" thing up, no?

Yes there are. Any guitar music popular with people over 18 qualifies in this argument. Adam & His Ants are better than all of them.

Beethoven's a good bet too, but I suspect you'd start a flame war with that on a classical music board

Huh? I'm sure some exist but, speaking as a classical musician, I've never met a classical musician or fan who didn't admire at least some Beethoven. Many people would say that some famous pieces like "Fur Elise" are overrated though.

Ditto. I've hardly ever heard anyone with bad things to say about LvB, discounting those who would foolishly write off classical music altogether.

What wouldn't be classified as AOR in 1980 isn't AOR today either. Music is timeless. Genres don't change.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:51 (ten years ago) Permalink

Btw. Beethoven I did pick on purpose. You will have those who consider Bach and Handel "too pompous and affected", Mozart and Haydn "too simple and too twee" and most post-Beethoven classical "too complex".

Beethoven sort of fits between all those.

wasn't being entirely serious with the LvB remark. What I mean is you'll probably get a whole other discussion about him on a classical music board. On here, there's simply not enough people who care.

Honestly, the only way this discussion could ever be relevant, would be if it were limited to popular music, and preferrably stuff that 'everyone' listens to. Not that hard to find something that no-one would object to simply on the account of never having heard it. "Who doesn't like Monk & Canatella?"
