quite an unwieldy term "electronic dance" but what can you do

i'm not taking ownership of the process, just responding to our dear durr durr durr's request to get it rolling

feel free to

1) nominate tracks (i'll start a google doc to keep track)

2) argue about the scope of such an exercise and bitch about terminology

3) make suggestions about the process and point system

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 03:26 (twelve years ago) link

electronic dance

so for starters i suggest rather than setting a nomination deadline immediately we shoot for a (somewhat arbitrary) minimum number of nominations and see how many people are on board with this

then if and when we get a certain critical mass we can set a two week deadline from there

have sworn off poll threads, but fuccit. are there established point score systems from past polls we can adopt?

'electronic dance' is definition enough. i'm sure it's an interesting semantic argument for aspies to have, but really we innately know what's on the table here.

the Tupac herogram (haitch), Thursday, 19 April 2012 03:40 (twelve years ago) link

no we don't

fauxmarc, Thursday, 19 April 2012 03:42 (twelve years ago) link

yah i think 'shuffle 10 resident advisor eoy lists' prob covers it but u know dont get upset if those obtuse ilxors get off on nominating cher lloyd or russell haswell or w/e

re: mechanics there is more than one established system and i haven't participated in other polls myself so i'm hoping people can come to consensus on it cause otherwise i'm liable to just copy the most recent high-profile poll

re: stupid noms i'm not sure if everyone is comfortable w me or someone else editing the list BUT if you nominate wm basinski rest assured I will hunt you down and make you pay

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 03:55 (twelve years ago) link

srsly though i think it would be pointless (for example) to try to argue about whether squarepusher should be included, no doubt people will nominate stuff in the IDM zone and the pop music zone and if that stuff ends up winning the poll c'est la vie

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 03:59 (twelve years ago) link

i should say i'm inclined not i'm liable, like i said i would rather this be a consensus / community thing rather than just take the reins

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:05 (twelve years ago) link

in what sense??

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:09 (twelve years ago) link

thank you for creating this, late great. really appreciate it. here's my input:

-"electronic dance" is just too wide of a scope. beside, RA has already done that for us. so I suggest restricting it to techno and house only.

-two weeks deadline is okay.

-10 nominations per person.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:13 (twelve years ago) link

and please be as honest as you can. don't write off a track just because it's a mega hit. if you love "who's afraid of detroit?" then go for it.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:15 (twelve years ago) link

k but what about ukg? is it house? what about two step? drum and bass? trance?

also why the 10 nomination limit? seems to me limiting votes would be much smarter than limiting candidates

two week limit is fine IMO, should we just say 5/1/2012 (or 1/5 if you're in a barbarian country?)

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:18 (twelve years ago) link

actually maybe not smarter but just more practical

idea is to spread a wide net and then narrow it, for example prisoneer might know about 25 hard techno tracks the rest of us might have forgotten to list

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:21 (twelve years ago) link

i like how it went from hugest scope ever in dance music to a relatively dinky scope in dance music

fauxmarc, Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:23 (twelve years ago) link

errr house is house and ukg is ukg. and I don't think there's any doubt whether dnb and trance count as house/techno. I mean, really?

sorry, I mean 10 votes per person. about the candidates, do we really have to set it? why don't we just make it free to pick from all house/techno tracks available?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:24 (twelve years ago) link

guess what i'm getting at is that if we really want to be inclusive and comprehensive limiting noms seems counterproductive

we want people to think hard about their votes, this preliminary stage should be like "oh yeah what about THAT killer track?!?" not like "oh shit maybe i should hold off on my noms in case i forgot some track or other" or "damn i forgot crazy frog will someone nominate it for me"

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:25 (twelve years ago) link

i think the best (and most common) voting method is giving a set number of points (50?) to distribute among tracks as you see fit

but yeah i dunno the scope question is a tough one and i'd like to let people like tim and lex who have been very active on dance threads and who often advocate for things like ukg to weigh in on it too

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:30 (twelve years ago) link

and then there's the question of FRANKENDANCE

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:31 (twelve years ago) link

well i will nominate these big dumb obvious choices:

the mfa - the difference it makes (superpitcher remix)
delia gonzalez and gavin russom - relevee (carl craig remix)
ada - i love asphalt
cortney tidwell - don't let stars keep us tangled up (ewan pearson remix)
vitalic - la rock 01
hystereo - winters in the city
antena - camino del sol (joakim remix)
jurgen paape - so weit wie noch nie
alan braxe and fred falke - rubicon
kiki - gas 126

why i was asking about remixes, btw

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:35 (twelve years ago) link

seems a little weird to have a "best dance tracks poll" and NOT have remixes imo. unless you were talking about what would happen if multiple versions of a track get nominated?

y'tulip, y'pea-brained earwig (donna rouge), Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:36 (twelve years ago) link

no, i was just wondering if i would nom, say, that Jaques Lu Cont remix of "Mr. Brightside".

really worried about people being sniffy.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:37 (twelve years ago) link

let them sniff, imo

the Tupac herogram (haitch), Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:38 (twelve years ago) link

remixes are fine

different remixes are different tracks on a record so they are separate in terms of both nomination and vote

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:39 (twelve years ago) link

I don't really get what you mean about nominations and candidates but I'm flexible about it, really. It's the scope that I'm concerned about. I just think that there are countless "top dance tracks" lists already and do we really want to see one more? With only house and techno it just feels more focused and "purer."

The points idea sounds good.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:40 (twelve years ago) link

I think the problem with "let's keep it house and techno" is that while it may seem obvious to some that drum & bass or UKG aren't applicable, I don't think the position of uk funky or post-dubstep or electro-house are nearly so clear cut, but I get the impression from durr durr durr that he'd want all of these excluded.

And then, if uk funky is excluded, should we also exclude Dennis Ferrer? And if we have a different position, what's the basis?

This comes down to 'what does durr durr durr (or anyone else) really want out of this poll' - I don't think 'house/techno' is a particularly clear answer.

yes, tim. I want uk funky and post-dubstep excluded, as much as I like both. but I think electrohouse (booka shade, etc) belongs in this poll. as well as Dennis Ferrer. I mean, he's as house as house can be in my ears.

About Dennis Ferrer, I don't understand what's the deal. Yes, maybe his tracks get played by uk funky dj's but his tracks are house, no doubt about it.

I think it's best to have a wide range of noms, and people can decide for themselves what they consider to fit under the umbrella. If only because I think this Dennis Ferrer/UK Funky v House thing would be just the tip of the iceberg.

yeah I was just citing it as an example.

But if you can't see why saying "The Cure & The Cause" is in but "Do You Mind" is out is thoroughly inconsistent then you do not have ears.

Tim F, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:15 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not the kind of person who typically says "screw genre it's all a big free for all" but I thinkl there are loads of fairly dodgy assumptions behind running "house / techno" together as if "we all know" what kind of music this means.

Tim F, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:16 (twelve years ago) link

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:36 (twelve years ago) link

my motive for wanting to include stuff like funky, ukg, dubstep, etc is just to make a more interesting poll and to include more diverse voices while still keeping the logical consistency of ok, these are all musics we can trace back to, or i dunno, maybe just essentially indebted to mr fingers and kevin saunderson (even drum and bass)

it's probably why i prefer RA's end of year roundup to LWE's, or pitchfork's to terrorizer's or CMJ's

what's the argument for purity?

would a workable compromise be to do an all-inclusive poll and then release the data and allow people to figure out separate "house only" or "techno only" rankings by throwing out shit they don't like?

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:38 (twelve years ago) link

don't see why some m.i.a. couldn't be considered if someone wanted. pull up the people rather than than paper planes, for example

fauxmarc, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:41 (twelve years ago) link

i think part of the point of a nominations process is to exclude tracks that don't meet the criteria at this stage, and by "don't meet the criteria" i'd say anything where the nominator is obviously stretching a point. UKG etc. are fine in this context imo cos at least one of their ancestors is Detroit.

FWIW i think it would be much much much much much better to

1) quit bitching

2) nominate your tracks

3) look at the final list

4) investigate tracks you think are suspect

5) resume the bitchfest about it *after* people nominate stuff you don't like

afaict everything nominated so far is more or less kosher so let's give the process the benefit of the doubt for now and get on with it, we can draw lines in the sand later

sieso on youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNJk631iwtQ

but on four tet's fabriclive sieso is not that track. it's actually the track that's titled ichso on my mp3. discogs and online retailers also have different versions of which is which.

nice work everyone, it is nice to wake up to nominations and not a clusterfuck

there is def some stuff on karl's list i'm gonna vote for

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 15:51 (twelve years ago) link

so... can we nominate d'n'b and dubstep or what?

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Thursday, 19 April 2012 15:55 (twelve years ago) link

actually DL, you're not allowed to nominate anything, we discussed it upthread

j/k

personally i don't care but i don't think we've found any collective clarity about whether this is a house/techno poll or something wider than that, you can arm wrestle w/ durr durr durr if you want

tbh though i think from checking out what's been nominated so far by people, seems like d'n'b is not going to garner very many votes and i doubt trad dubstep will either so i'm not sure it'd be worth the trouble

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 15:59 (twelve years ago) link

but yeah, if it were up to me i'd say go ahead and post up whatever you feel like

FWIW i think if we're going to "strike out" stuff like the knife or hot chip or w/e the "burden of proof" should be on the person who wants to get rid of it, not the person who wants to include it

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

then I'd like to nominate

I need new, hip khakis (DJP), Thursday, 19 April 2012 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

i LOVE "you big dummy", was running through my head for hours the other day

FWIW i think if we're going to "strike out" stuff like the knife or hot chip or w/e the "burden of proof" should be on the person who wants to get rid of it, not the person who wants to include it

^^ does this sound like a good compromise to everyone?

because some stuff is starting to creep in the list (juke, footwork, dubstep, etc) that i imagine at least one person might find iffy and i imagine it's only a matter of time before someone nominates something that more than one person finds iffy

or who knows, maybe we've just reached that point of "fuck it, nom what you want" consensus

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 21:24 (twelve years ago) link

ALSO we will eventually need to import this into a spreadsheet and it would be very helpful if everyone delimited their nominations the same way ...

remixers get added to the track title, it's not ideal but it's better than adding them in with the orig artist

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 April 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

lol i seriously have NOTHING to add to the noms at this point i don't think, you guys are maniacs

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 April 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, that's the best way to handle remixes right now

at the end when we tally and analyze which artists placed the best we can manually work them back into the artist category

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 21:57 (twelve years ago) link

in other words, in that sort of final analysis, wasserman would get the points for the regensburg remix rather than markus guenter (the original artist)

Is it wrong to nominate Vladislav Delay's "Anima", as it is a 60 minute track that takes up a whole album?

Tuomas, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:29 (twelve years ago) link

is it danceable?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 08:32 (twelve years ago) link

The Fires Of Ork - Sky Lounge - great piece of music... Can't imagine dancing to it though, gently swaying maybe...

mmmm, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:32 (twelve years ago) link

Whoops, I didn't notice the "dance" part in the thread title... Is this poll for dance tracks only, i.e no ambient/downtempo/experimental/etc stuff?

Tuomas, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:32 (twelve years ago) link

Anima as a dance track? .. And I think I've killed the vibe a few time with my selection!

mmmm, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:35 (twelve years ago) link

How do you define "dance" anyway? Tracks with a dance beat, or tracks that actually gets played at dance clubs? Because there's plenty of stuff (like IDM, minimal techno) that would fit the former definition but not the latter.

Tuomas, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:37 (twelve years ago) link

and there's a lot of stuff that DJs will drop into a set that is blatantly not "electronic dance" but i think on the whole it's reasonably clear what we're voting for and hopefully outliers will just not get votes

What is jazz? Well, lady...

coal, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:49 (twelve years ago) link

Electronic dance music (EDM) is electronic music produced primarily for the purposes of use within a nightclub setting, or in an environment that is centered upon dance-based entertainment. The music is largely created for use by disc jockeys and is produced with the intention of it being heard in the context of a continuous DJ set; wherein the DJ progresses from one record to the next via a synchronized segue or "mix".

Okay, here's a revised nomination list, I removed all the beatless/ambient/etc stuff, if this is supposed to be a "dance" poll. I still don't why it should be limited to dance, but it's up to you to decide.

Btw, after this is over, would people be interested in a 90s electronic music poll? I could run that, if there's enough interest.

Tuomas, Friday, 20 April 2012 11:02 (twelve years ago) link

i dont see why it should be limited to music tbh there are loads of great books and films that should be in this poll, also some amazing bagels ive eaten the last 2-3 years particularly

coal, Friday, 20 April 2012 11:03 (twelve years ago) link

Great point.

Tuomas, Friday, 20 April 2012 11:04 (twelve years ago) link

To elaborate: everyone knows there's a lot of overlap between electronic "dance" music and "non-dance" music, plenty of producers have released both, plus it's sometimes hard to tell if a track is supposed to be "dance" even if it has a beat. So this kind of artificial division feels weird, unless we limit this to actual stuff that people dance to at clubs; but in that case, many of the nominations here wouldn't apply. So I think it'd make much more sense to just have a general "electronic music" poll.

I'm not familiar with Hot Chip, but I listened to that song on Youtube, and it sounds like a rock tune with a drum machine and some synths; there's an electric guitar, electric bass, rock vocals, even some "real" percussion (I think). So I guess it'd be a stretch to call it "electronic music".

Tuomas, Friday, 20 April 2012 13:24 (twelve years ago) link

But, IMO, to avoid dispute, people should be able to nominate what they want; I'm sure the voting process will weed out rock songs and other shite like that.

I believe that comes out to 506 so far

So for the love of good ctrl + f before you post.

wow! It's looks like I know less about "electronic dance" than I do about current metal.

I look forward to checking out the top tracks voted.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, he should have a sort of Dom-Passatino-dead-pool voting right: I don't want him around but would value his opinion on such matters.

EDB, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

EDB, you included "Knights of the Jaguar" in your master list, but as someone pointed out, that one is a 1999 release.

Tuomas, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:38 (twelve years ago) link

Well, it's not so much "my list" as much as just everything here, copied, pasted, and arranged. I didn't bother going through each nomination to make sure it qualified.

EDB, Friday, 20 April 2012 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

There's no way I'm going to plough through this whole thread to find out if there was ever any agreement about what counted as 'electronic dance music', so I don't know if the Ada track I'm nominating counts (it's certainly electronic, but you probably wouldn't dance to it):

Ada – Happy Birthday
The Age of Selfishness – Wakako’ka
Art Department – We Call Love (DJ harvey remix)
Awanto 3 & Tom Trago – Good Old Days
Cajmere – Say You Will

Will carry on alphabetically later on...

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 20 April 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

so i'm *already* starting to think about how to tally and count and score votes

i know the "ranked ballot" thing from 50 pts for #1 to 1 pt for #50 is popular, i have some niggling doubts that its actually the best way to do it because it seems to heavily favor certain parts of the distribution, but at the same time i know its a very subjective question.

for example, it seems slight un-fair to me that 5 #10s has the same weight as 4 #1s, or that 5 #20s have the same weight as 3 #1s. i guess what i'm saying is that it seems to heavily favor the center of the distribution which might be why so many "middle of the road" choices place relatively high on certain poll threads.

personally i am sort of leaning in favor of a pazz-and-jop style poll where people have, say, 100 points to divide among 10-20 choices, that way a few people w/ bad taste can't commandeer the poll and everyone's choices are meaningful

OTOH like i said, this is all off-the-top-of-my-head thinking and i've never participated in *any* other polls on ILM or ILE so i'd love to hear everyone's suggestions

also EDB and anyone else who wants to help me with logistics please shoot me a webmail

What if the on heady week we loved it for was back in 2003 and we're having to refresh our dancefloor-damaged memories? All my vinyl is on the other side of the world and my portable hard drive's dead - it'll take a little while to piece together clues from old emails/messageboard posts/etc.

for example, it seems slight un-fair to me that 5 #10s has the same weight as 4 #1s, or that 5 #20s have the same weight as 3 #1s. i guess what i'm saying is that it seems to heavily favor the center of the distribution which might be why so many "middle of the road" choices place relatively high on certain poll threads.

there's also the option of going the arithmetic progression route but ramping up the common difference every ten or so places, for example 50-49-48 geting 1-2-3 pts, then 40-39-38 getting 11-13-15 pts, 30-29-28 getting 32-35-38 pts, etc... though in my experience the results usually aren't that much different than those gained with the standard '50th 1 pt, 1st 50 pts' procedure, and middle of the road picks inevitably prevail no matter what system you choose, especially if a large numble of people are involved (i guess the only properly anti-MOR system would be some sort of super-quirky/wacky version of the Village Voice model like, i dunno, distributing 1000 points to 10-50 tunes?)

Well, the poll title says tracks of the 00's. It irks me to include tracks from the past couple of years. Might as well add songs from 1999.

On an unrelated note, I was thinking that maybe splitting it into two polls would be a good idea to reduce the noms. On one poll original tracks and on the other one remixes. Just like they do it on Resident Advisor.

OK

a few reminders

1) even though the list of nominations is not going to be capped - unlike many other polls where people got a maximum number of nominations - the # of votes ARE going to be capped.

2) so whether we go with a ranking or a points system, you aren't going to be able to vote for *everything* you want to, and i am personally strongly in favor of giving extra weight to ballots w/ fewer tracks on them (a point system would make this simplest)

3) this means that you probably want to go through the list and see how many tracks are already up that you'd want vote for before you add any more nominations. for example, i just spent five minutes doing that and found about forty tracks i would probably nominate myself. this means i am now going to flip through my collection and pick maybe ten tracks i really want on the ballot so i can vote for them, rather than just grabbing every mix and compilation i have and nominating every track i enjoyed

4) as EDB said, for the love of god, please control-f or at least scan the list, just scrolling up and down quickly through the list i see a bunch of repeat noms, many of them rather obvious choices too

the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 18:44 (twelve years ago) link

There's so many tracks now that there's going to be a really thin dispersal of votes presumably with a few tracks getting shitloads and some really surprising choices in the lower reaches of the list.

yeah even though i am a maths/sciences person and statistics and probability is not my strong suit i can intuitively tell that "long tail" effect is kinda going to fuck over the integrity of the results if that tail gets big enough

the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 18:58 (twelve years ago) link

or i guess i should say long enough

then again i imagine that is always a problem to some extent with any poll with a similar methodology, the choices/ordering at the "bottom" (ie less popular) are going to be less predictable and meaningful than the "top" no matter what, it's just going to be a matter of degrees

and also i am sure in the end the moaning on the results thread will not be about process but rather about the definition of house/techno and the pernicious influence of dance hipsterism / contrarianism / middlebrowism / grimebloggerism / pipecockism (see: jazz albums poll results)

the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 19:02 (twelve years ago) link

TBH though it wouldn't be that different to having no nominations at all and everyone getting carte blanche to vote for any dance track they wanted.

Part of the reason I nominated more than I could feasibly vote for was because I wanted to at least have the option of voting for some of them, I have no idea what's going to make my final ballot and I want other people to have the option of voting for them as well.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Saturday, 21 April 2012 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

yeah that's fair

i feel like i have a pretty good idea of what i'd vote for but that's mainly because memorability = quality in my head

the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

to go back to what moka was saying about restricting the poll to 2000-2010

i do worry that my ballot is going to skew heavily toward the new new new, i found myself wanting to put a lot of stuff on the shortlist from the whole post-dubstep scene (2562, martyn, untold, hessle audio, etc) and i wonder whether that's just because their impact is much more immediate for me than, say, electroclash classixxx

(insert ramblings about critical distance)

the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

i will probably vote for songs i had the most fun playing in clubs or dancing to, 2000 to 2006 was when i djed and went out to hear djs a lot.

JacobSanders, Saturday, 21 April 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago) link

yeah even though i am a maths/sciences person and statistics and probability is not my strong suit i can intuitively tell that "long tail" effect is kinda going to fuck over the integrity of the results if that tail gets big enough

ime the more ballots that you receive the more 'legitimacy' - in the sense of % of total votes cast - the middle range of the results will have

its not that yr wrong is that the more ballots cast the further down the list the 'consensus' extends. i think its debatable about which of these is the most valid, i guess it depends on what the stated aim(s) of this poll are and whether or not you feel that a track with a limited but passionate constituency 'deserves' to place over a track with broader support.

this is such a depressing thread

Lamp, Sunday, 22 April 2012 00:06 (twelve years ago) link

why do you say that, lamp?

tim - i was wondering about that too, also even though i'm a huge fan i think it's easy to acknowledge that their 90s work fairly blows away their 00s work, though theo has been having a slight renaissance lately

it would be interesting to try to work with some sort of geometric mean system - that way a track that got a 20th place vote and a 30th place vote would average at 24.5 pts whereas a track that got two 25th place votes would average at 25 pts

we would then need to, uh, de-normalize the means by multiplying up by the number of votes

Herbert - Moving Like A Train (Smith N' Hack Remix)

I've been having a good time w/this or w/e because I've been able to dig out setlists from 06 house parties or mixtape tracklistings from 03 or primeval ILx threads about Areal from the two-three years where I only had internet access at netcafes or songs I remember from the two times someone from Kompakt came to NZ to DJ during that decade &c&c&c. Admittedly this isn't coming through by just listing tracks, but I figure once the nominations are sorted we can start advocating things.

Er I'm w/V4hid on the possibility of a geometric mean system or something as an alternative to the standard ILx vote weighting system, but I don't have a lot to contribute math-wise.

Re: scoring, there's nothing really wrong with the system used in the artists polls (40,36,33,30,28,26,24,22,20,19... or something like that) - you can start with biggish gaps between the top ten and then have much smaller gaps lower down. I would imagine that for most people your 18th and 19th placed tracks are pretty much interchangeable position-wise so there's no reason to have much of a points differential.

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 22 April 2012 12:14 (twelve years ago) link

As the first nomination poll on ILX I feel qualified to participate in, I'm excited! re: vote systems

i am a math hobbyist so i am just having fun with it

the late great, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

ok, a quick look at "limiting cases" reveals the geometric mean system to be a surprisingly terrible idea. it seems to work pretty well at rewarding consistency when the spread is not crazy.

but consider the following situation

track A receives three first place votes. using a normal point system, the geometric mean comes out to 50 points, and multiplying up by three gives us 150 points. you get the same result using the geometric mean system.

track B receives three first place and one fiftieth-place vote. this should give track B a tiny "edge" on track A, but instead the geometric mean comes out to about 18.8 which gives it about 75 points overall!!

the late great, Sunday, 22 April 2012 19:50 (twelve years ago) link

i think the geometric mean system would work well if we did the sort of thing where we narrowed it down to the same 50 finalists and then *everybody* ranked those same 50 tracks, but the way the poll is set up right now it doesn't make sense at all.

the late great, Sunday, 22 April 2012 20:56 (twelve years ago) link

like i understand that on the surface it seems like, ok, it's just an edit of a 50s doowop track or whatever, but then again i see on your list you nominated a mark e track which is itself just an edit and joakims remix of camino del sol and floating points vacuum boogie, both of which seem much less "dancey" than the "beggin" remix

and besides, the "beggin" remix was a club smash and conceptually not so different from, say, a lot of moodymann tracks

like theo's parliament ugly edit or his etta james don't really seem to convert those tracks into house or techno tracks, they more or less sound very true to the originals and just give djs more to work with, whereas (iirc, admit i haven't listened lately) the frankie valli thing makes it waaaaay more danceable and modern than the original

i dunno, i did also say upthread it was really sticky territory and that i didn't want to be the one making the decision!

Late great, it's not a matter of dancability. It's just that in Pilooski's Beggin you can still hear 80% of the original track. A different animal from Moodyman's works in which you can really hear the rework done. In a lesser extent the same can be said about tiger n woods, revenge, mark e, 6th borough, etc. Although I'm still not sure whether they're eligible or not. I'll leave it to you guys to decide.

Why not? Your list had Studio, Blondes and Lindstrom & Prins Thomas and they're even closer to pop/rock than Fever Ray (assuming its electronic-ness is your complaint).

Concerning BoC well it's definitely electronic and compared to some of the noms I've seen that are borderline ambient this one at least has a driving beat throughout. Maybe not apt for bodyrocking but you can definitely bob your head to it.

Moka, Monday, 23 April 2012 06:59 (twelve years ago) link

I mean honestly, I love both tracks but Studio is hardly electronic either and I'd even argue is dancefloor worthy if those are our parameters. Compare it to the Fever Ray track and tell me which one fits better the concept of electronica:

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 07:41 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, we have plenty of not-really-clubby electronic music in the noms, how is BoC different from that?

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 07:42 (twelve years ago) link

This is exactly why I don't think the word "dance" should be in the poll. Anything with a steady beat is technically danceable, so there'll just be endless arguments whether this or that tune is "proper" dance.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 07:44 (twelve years ago) link

For example, a lot 00s minimal techno is such that I couldn't imagine dancing to it, but I'm sure there are other people who think it is dance music.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 07:46 (twelve years ago) link

xpost: My point. I mean let's take Ricardo Villalobos, I love him and think his tracks deserve to be in the top ranks in this poll but if you can imagine dancing to a tune like 'sieso' you might as well dance to BoC.

Moka, Monday, 23 April 2012 07:52 (twelve years ago) link

as a curious bystander who won't be participating (but will probably follow the results for pointers), i'm also a little confused by what the submissions criteria might be.

i wonder if the the distinction is primarily functional, between music that's aimed explicitly at the dance floor and stuff that caters more to the non-dancing user. if so, then what's wrong with mostly electronic mainstream pop that works as dance music? you know, like madonna tracks or w/e. is that stuff excluded cuz it's too accessible and well-known, thus would soak up lurker points? or is the central presence of the unsampled human voice an automatic disqualifier?

also, is "electronic dance" music defined here in a negative sense, by the fact that it couldn't conceivably be described as anything else? (i.e., not pop, not rap, not indie, not rock, etc...)

yuppie bullshit chocolate blogbait (contenderizer), Monday, 23 April 2012 07:54 (twelve years ago) link

I think Durr Durr Durr really wanted a "top 100 electronic dance tracks you'd be most likely to buy either from a vinyl record store or from beatport or juno, preferably limited to music made (or released by labels) in Germany or Detroit, of the 00s" poll, and has been fighting a rearguard action ever since.

Tim F, Monday, 23 April 2012 08:04 (twelve years ago) link

FWIW I was thinking of nominating the Stuart Price extended version of Madonna's Hung Up, but it's not on YouTube and I can't remember exactly how it goes. But anything which there's an equivalent to an "Extended Club Mix" is fair game tbh.

I'm generally leaning in favour of the disco edits being included and away from Fever Ray/BoC (at least in unremixed form), based on what I remember dancing to, but not hugely fussed.

etc, Monday, 23 April 2012 08:06 (twelve years ago) link

I think we need to start over. I think maybe it would be clearest to call this top 100 bobbins/partisans tracks of the 00s.

But yeah, the thread now has dance in the title anyways. I won't be voting for BOC then.

EDB, Monday, 23 April 2012 08:16 (twelve years ago) link

"top 100 electronic dance tracks you'd be most likely to buy either from a vinyl record store or from beatport or juno, preferably limited to music made (or released by labels) in Germany or Detroit, of the 00s"

This would then limit the voter pool to a small subgroup of posters - basically the people who post to the "rolling dance" and "techno/house bobbins" threads - which is okay, I guess, if you want it like that... But maybe he should've then advertised the poll only on those threads, like the rap goons did/do on their yearly polls. Starting a general thread means others beyond that niche are gonna get interested, and hence we get into arguments like this.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 08:20 (twelve years ago) link

(x-post with EDB)

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 08:20 (twelve years ago) link

I dunno, I think it seems pretty reasonable to open up a thread to all instead of imposing self-ghettoization.

EDB, Monday, 23 April 2012 08:24 (twelve years ago) link

So basically: if you want to do a poll that get more voters than the bobbins crew, you gonna have to accept that people's definition of "electronic dance" is wider than in those threads.

(x-post)

groovemaaan, Monday, 23 April 2012 08:30 (twelve years ago) link

If we base our picks on danceability then we might as well nominate kylie minogue or something and that would defeat the purpose of this poll. I mean, surely "EDM" is clear enough to you? BoC is IDM and fever ray is electronic(pop?) whatever. Wikipedia has a traditional definition of EDM which I quoted above. Let's follow it. That's the key word I guess, traditional. This might be a stretch but it's like Dylan and Springsteen don't belong in a punk songs list even though their lyrics are sometimes "punk." By the way good point Moka about Studio, Blondes and Pole. I wouldn't mind if they're deleted if they contradict what I was saying.

P.s. please bear my english.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 23 April 2012 08:33 (twelve years ago) link

According to the definition you posted, several Kylie Minogue tracks would actually apply here. I don't really see how/why those tracks should be excluded; they were written to be danceable, they were/are played at dance clubs, the only non-electronic part in them are the vocals. So how are they different from other dance music with vocals that's been nominated here, like Basement Jaxx?

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 08:42 (twelve years ago) link

I got people to dance to Villalobos, but Boards of Canada or Pole would surely clear the floor or at least confuse kids dancing

Also some of Arnold Kramer's paintings are now available as jpgs, feel they should be included as some have depicted a form of dancing and are viewable at any point during the last decade

The rhythm of work itself is a form of music but I guess it depends if we're restricting this purely to leisure time

For fuck's sake, this really isn't that complicated. Any definition is inevitably going to engender some set of contradictions, and unless we're willing to refine things down to an arbitrarily narrow set of criteria (which would just be counter-productive) just try to aim for the very clear convention that's been laid out. Otherwise it's like arguing about the definition of art or sex: you're not going to find one that's 100% coherent, but there's still something of a consensus on what you mean by it.

Electronic dance music (EDM) is electronic music produced primarily for the purposes of use within a nightclub setting, or in an environment that is centered upon dance-based entertainment. The music is largely created for use by disc jockeys and is produced with the intention of it being heard in the context of a continuous DJ set; wherein the DJ progresses from one record to the next via a synchronized segue or "mix".

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 23 April 2012 09:10 (twelve years ago) link

If that's not clear enough I don't know what is :(

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 23 April 2012 09:10 (twelve years ago) link

That would rule out poppy dance music acts like Basement Jaxx or The Chemical Brothers though; their music isn't "produced with the intention of it being heard in the context of a continuous DJ set" any more than Kylie's is.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 09:22 (twelve years ago) link

I won't get into that. But I'd agree if we kinda start over and use that Wikipedia definition. Yes that means ruling out poppy dance music acts.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 23 April 2012 09:29 (twelve years ago) link

"How do you define "dance" anyway? Tracks with a dance beat, or tracks that actually gets played at dance clubs? Because there's plenty of stuff (like IDM, minimal techno) that would fit the former definition but not the latter."

and there's a lot of stuff that DJs will drop into a set that is blatantly not "electronic dance" but i think on the whole it's reasonably clear what we're voting for and hopefully outliers will just not get votes

― aboulia banks (Noodle Vague), Friday, April 20, 2012 8:45 AM (3 days ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

This. End of discussion. Just vote and if you're the only one that votes for Kylie because you want to make a point and it doesn't make the results, then fine.

I did suggest this solution upthread, but since we now have Durrr disqualifying some of the nominations before the voting even starts, it's not as simple as "just vote".

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 09:55 (twelve years ago) link

Btw, I wouldn't vote Kylie "just because I want to make a point", but because I've danced my ass off to her tunes in a nightclub setting and enjoyed them as electronic dance music.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 09:58 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, if you want to have a house/techno poll, I'm fine with this, just call it a house/techno poll. But dance music has always been larger than that, and it has always had some overlap with pop.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 April 2012 10:01 (twelve years ago) link

it's electronic dance, a.k.a. EDM. I guess we all agreed with that and I compromised for this after wanting only house and techno. but I guess it's not clear enough for you that stuff like Kylie are not EDM.

The Madonna track that should be here is "Sorry (Man With Guitar Remix)".

Or possibly "Erotica (Confessions Studio Extended Remix)".

Both of which I would choose as dancefloor bangers rather than pop songs.

I think that if someone can stoutly claim that the reason they are voting for something is that it's something they have danced to and enjoy dancing to, rather than because it's a good pop (or whatever) song that one could dance to, then that should be justification enough.

OH!

Arguing about the legitimacy of random remixes and ambient tracks or 00s Boards of Canada tracks that no-one cares about is just wasting time really because most of this stuff will just be washed out when people start voting anyway.

anyway for me the fear is not that pitchfork-type choices will crack the top 10 but that they will dominate the top 10. i personally have no problem w/ lcd topping the poll but i would be mighty disappointed if it was all lcd, the knife, etc in the top 10

but, now that pipecock's gone, i can confidently say i am the realest n***a alive. and even for me, the joy of seeing stuff i like in polls is not from seeing it dominate a list from the usual sources (for example, lwe) but rather from seeing stuff i like make the cut in unlikely places - from seeing, for example, ostgut-type techno crack the RA list, or from seeing functional dance music of any stripe infiltrate the pitchfork list.

the late great, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:56 (twelve years ago) link

in fact, i find "true. techno. music." sites like LWE pretty tedious when it comes to year-end listmaking and critical opinion, though i do appreciate them as a source for finding out about new music.

Srsly though:

- firstly, check out Moodymann albums - A Silent Introduction and Black Mahogani being most key, then Mahogany Brown and Forevernevermore.

- Theo Parrish is not exactly like Moodymann but they're mentioned in the same breath for a reason; their styles complement one another. Get Parallel Dimensions first and foremost, then First Floor. For a third pic I would go with the Rotating Assembly album.

- Norma Jean Bell is a saxophonist/producer who worked a lot with Moodymann, and her album Come Into My Room is (to be reductionist) basically Moodymann with added sax.

- Andres is another Moodymann protege and his self-titled album is like a short, focused Moodymann album which I probably listen to more than any Moodymann other than ASI and BM.

- Trus'me is basically a Moodymann clone but that doesn't change the fact that his debut Working Nights is about on a level with ASI and BM (in my opinion).

voting is fun, especially if you don't dwell on it to the point where it doesn't make sense, just go with whatever impulse you have when you look at the list of nominees. i find it weird that people have enough time to read the thread and wring their hands about the whole process but not enough to just vote in the damn thing so we have some interesting results for people to argue about. i have no idea what the lurker factor will be like on this poll, i'm so confused about ilx-lurker-electro-taste after Autechre and Mouse on Mars won those other weird polls.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 26 April 2012 12:37 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not too bothered about voting or seeing how the voting plays out. I am interested in seeing nominations. Discovering new music and rediscovering music that I haven't heard for a while is what I'm here for. I think dance music is quite unique because people tend to get into it fairly intensely and then fall out of love with it. Just my theory maybe but people attach the music to going out clubbing and lose interest when they slow down going out. Nominations can represent eras.

afaict, none have a thorough, well-curated career overview compilation available. seems like craig's recent sessions remix collection for !K7's about as close as it comes. half surprised that soul jazz or a similar label hasn't undertaken something like this - for moodymann at least.

on a serious note and fwiw i don't really understand NV's reasons for not voting.

my criteria for voting is the same as it would be for any other poll - assuming i could only take 50 of these tracks on an ipod to a desert island, which 50 would i take? a lot of stuff on this list i probably wouldn't listen to in any context other than a mix (and a lot of these i don't like and would probably never listen to)

but the 50 on my shortlist i have certainly listened to, by themselves, definitely more or as much as any other individual song from any song-oriented genre i like

Lamp, Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:16 (twelve years ago) link

tbh when there's a subject i'm into i forget for a while why i rarely vote in polls which is that mostly i don't think in terms of lists and charts. but listening back to stuff for this particular poll i cdn't separate a lot of the individual tracks from the contexts in which i'd hear them - which is true of a lot of music for me anyway so - it just felt nonsensical to say "this is my favourite" when i'm much more a "this here right now is my favourite" listener. and for some reason picking "what i like right now" feels wronger for dance music because i feel it as much more of a continuum - i think i'd find it easier to pick favourite albums because they feel more monolithic and self-contained.

as i say, none of this is a critique of the poll process, the run down and the left-field choices are all interesting to me. it's more something i discovered about how i felt about dance music - and i ought to add as a predominantly armchair listener for the span of this poll - while i was thinking about what to vote for.

good point, missed that. a well-chosen two disc comp is thorough enough for my purposes, and that one looks great. oop though, and seems to have had pretty low visibility outside the established scene?

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:32 (twelve years ago) link

there are definitely some tracks on this poll that have that "this here right now is my favorite" vibe - particularly a lot of the post-2010 stuff and post-dubstep stuff seems to me like something i may not be into five or six years down the line (cf 2step, most of which, though not all of which, i used to consume w/ a passion but which now mostly sounds badly dated and fluffy to my ears)

i'm mostly voting for things i've been listening to for years and years without getting tired of them, stuff like "live goes on" and "miura" and "poney pt 1" and "r&b drunkie" which just never seem old and never leave my ipod and always put a huge grin on my face even though it's been five or ten years since i first heard them

snark aside i guess what wd be the point of trying to push Juan Atkins to people outside of the "established scene"? it's a pretty big scene at this point. and Tresor was a big label within those terms.

well, a point made by several in this thread is that EDM is a genre that exists almost entirely in a specific context: dance clubs. the music resides largely on minimally packaged 12" singles produced for DJs, these records often issued in limited quantities by obscure labels and carried by shops that cater almost exclusively to DJs and dedicated fans of the scene. the albums that represent the scene both inside and out are mixtapes more often than not. artists release material under a variety of different names, and even the biggest tracks are as likely to be known as remixes as they are in their original form. this makes the music rather inaccessible to potential fans who aren't part of the scene.

my attitude is that all music deserves to be heard by as many people as might be interested in it. and that outside club culture, "thorough, well-curated" career overview collections are a good way to expose interesting & important artists to curious would-be fans.

Heh, I'm definitely willing to, though. And I'll do my best to sort out "questionable" nominations.

EDB, Thursday, 26 April 2012 21:52 (twelve years ago) link

Well, we're at 1053 now, though there's dozens of duplicates and "questionable" nominations that need to be taken out.

Having compiled all the nominations, let me say that for all the hand-wringing about house/pop distinction, over-nominating stuff (i.e. adding every track you kind of enjoyed) has made the nomination list way more arbitrary than any fever rays track ever could. Granted, I'm still questionable about LCD soundsystem (surely something like yeah (pretentious mix) would be elegible?)

I added everything to a google spreadsheet that's here

I think the most effective thing to do is have a sort of "flag nomination" system, where if you see something you don't want on, flag it, and it will go to an external review board (i.e. we'll debate it here for 2 days to no conclusion).

EDB, Thursday, 26 April 2012 22:28 (twelve years ago) link

EDB you're thinking the same way i am - just scanning the list i see way more random house/techno choices than questionable pop or indie choices

one thing we could do is have everybody nominate 50 tracks they think should make the cut (w/o sorting into a ballot) and then chop out everything that doesn't get any votes

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 22:30 (twelve years ago) link

then do a full ballot

thanks again EDB

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

Good work EDB. There's quite a lot of duplicate entries there, and it's quite amusing that Matt DC's nom is listed with his comment:
Mylo - Drop The Pressure (I don't even want to vote for this but the idea of the Gloria Estefan bootleg being nominated and not the original is horrible)

fauxmarc, Thursday, 26 April 2012 23:24 (twelve years ago) link

A further elimination process seems like overkill but I think anyone who wants to nominate more stuff should honestly ask themselves "will this actually make my top 50"?

At this point I doubt that anyone will be obsessively checking everything they haven't heard out of the 1000+ noms so there seems to be little point in expanding the field.

Lamp, Thursday, 26 April 2012 23:47 (twelve years ago) link

i don't have any agenda, durr durr durr brought up the idea and i thought it might be fun?

i see a lot of poll threads on ILM and i never click on them because i basically don't give a shit about what they're polling about, thought i'd step in and facilitate this one because i have a lot of past dance-thread sins to make up for. also because i always looked at those threads on new answers and thought "we should do a dance one".

i always thought about doing separate house and techno ones but always figured it'd be hard to draw the line and everyone would get super-frustrated, sort of smh that we're doing a much more inclusive poll and people are still arguing about it

the late great, Friday, 27 April 2012 00:08 (twelve years ago) link

to answer your questions

1) i don't think there's enough critical distance to do something canonical on 00s dance music. it's hard enough coming up w/ a disco canon let alone 00s dance.

2) i am pretty certain that the results are not going to look like 50 tracks i'd want to take to a desert island w/ me ... i'll feel lucky if five of my picks make the top fifty let alone ten

3) not sure what an aesthetic soi is, is that like a soi disant critical theorist of the hardcore continuum?

the late great, Friday, 27 April 2012 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

I think the most effective thing to do is have a sort of "flag nomination" system, where if you see something you don't want on, flag it, and it will go to an external review board (i.e. we'll debate it here for 2 days to no conclusion).

I see that my two Barbara Morgenstern noms were flagged as "pop?". If you really must, you can delete "Gute Nacht", as it is kind of a synth poppy (though everything in it is still electronic beside the vocals), but "37°" is a pure instrumental electronic tune with no singing.

Tuomas, Friday, 27 April 2012 06:57 (twelve years ago) link

I see two Knife songs have been flagged as "popish". I'm pretty sure they're Lutheran.

No good can come of whittling down the nominations. If you can go through to flag things you want to get rid of, or things you want to keep, you can put a ballot together. Just let people vote and call them a feeb if you don't like their list afterwards.

seapunk run. run punk run! (Noodle Vague), Friday, 27 April 2012 08:32 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, if your nominations are missing, just put them in, or mention it here (but again, if you have no intention of voting for it, probably no point of having it there).

While I think submitting 50 track list first solves a lot of problems, I doubt people are willing to submit a list, and then submit another one.

EDB, Friday, 27 April 2012 08:45 (twelve years ago) link

lol@venetian snares

that Slowhouse record is good, forgot about that, tho i can never remember which track is which

coal, Friday, 27 April 2012 09:04 (twelve years ago) link

Just let people vote and spare the endless handwringing.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 27 April 2012 09:10 (twelve years ago) link

Like when magazines or websites do these sorts of lists people are basically free to vote for anything with no nominations process and those turn out alright*, the number of nominations is a red herring.

*Okay they are often lame but not as a result of having too many options to vote for.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 27 April 2012 09:12 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, at this point the nomination system is kind of... well, pointless (other than giving a convenient advice list to refresh people's memories).

but yeah, OTM.

And why did someone 0_o my Poison Dart/Skeng noms? The former is definitely top 50 material.

EDB, Friday, 27 April 2012 09:56 (twelve years ago) link

I see two Knife songs have been flagged as "popish". I'm pretty sure they're Lutheran.

ba dum TSSSSSSSSS ;-)

poison dart / skeng is post-dancehall NOM DENIED

the late great, Friday, 27 April 2012 15:25 (twelve years ago) link

spare the endless handwringing

b-b-but if we did this there would be no ILX

the late great, Friday, 27 April 2012 15:26 (twelve years ago) link

lol wth how does venetian snares not count

fauxmarc, Friday, 27 April 2012 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

"Venetian Snares is electronic music and you could dance to it if you wanted to hmmmm??? do you see?????"

dancing to ragga/jump up/breakcore is not some foreign thing that people decidedly don't dance to unless they're trying to make a point reserved for hypotheticals, like i don't even understand where people can come from with this unless they've been to zero dnb parties ever at which point how can you get all decider-er on anyone's appropriate place in edm

fauxmarc, Friday, 27 April 2012 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

did anyone get round to starting a spotify list for all this stuff?

btw didn't i braek ur heart (NickB), Friday, 27 April 2012 15:43 (twelve years ago) link

so, what have I missed here?

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Friday, 27 April 2012 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

I think Coal was pointing and laughing at Venetian Snares rather than making a point about their eligibility.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 27 April 2012 15:47 (twelve years ago) link

Okay, here's a start on a spotify playlist, let me know if it works:

spotify:user:lumpygravy:playlist:1y6YgTuBxq8bmwdTnKbJrX

Only got to the end of adding the A's before I got horribly bored, but I might do more another time. Only 50% of the tracks were available (39 out of 78). Feel free to chip in...

btw didn't i braek ur heart (NickB), Friday, 27 April 2012 16:21 (twelve years ago) link

Would it be really bad form if I abandoned alphabetical order and just added ones I nominated?

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 27 April 2012 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

(I think I know the answer to that, but I can't see us ever working through the whole alphabet)

Everything is eligible imo even this crap

coal, Saturday, 28 April 2012 06:10 (twelve years ago) link

You get the noms you deserve, whatever people decide is suitable is de facto suitable because its whatever ILX thinks is suitable and if that means Hot Chip and Venetian Snares instead of Mr G or Mike Dunn there's nothing wrong with that, its what ILX is into

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 02:04 (twelve years ago) link

Some of these nominations are a bit on the poppy side, and I'm dubious that any nominations at this late date will gather any consensus, but only about half of my favorites were already covered above:

Blondie - Heart of Glass (Jesse Garcia Electric Spain remix)
Offer Nissim - Perfect Love
Rihanna - Don't Stop the Music (Jody Den Broeder Big Room mix)
Missill - Glitch (feat. Jahcoozi)
ATFC feat. Rae - Giv Me Luv (Ocean Trench Mix)
The Amplifetes - Somebody New (Claes Rosen Vocal remix)

DJ Sneak - Fix My Sink

Moodymann - J.A.N.
Pépé Bradock - Life

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 11:40 (twelve years ago) link

Hold on, you're complaining about other people's choices not being electronic enough, and you're nominating "Rose Rouge"? (Not that I've anything against it, brilliant tune!)

Tuomas, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 11:58 (twelve years ago) link

But but, isn't it jazzy/deep house? I've never complained about some tracks being "not electronic enough" anyway. Maybe you mean not EDM enough.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 12:04 (twelve years ago) link

i was thinking of nom'ing sandstorms, life and JAN the other day, but got sidetracked, so thx
