How on earth do you get your tater tots so crispy and delicious?

Clarke B., Thursday, 19 September 2002 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

When you opened for us (Transport to Summer) at Middlebury, did you manage to get the furniture tower all the way to the ceiling? When we left, you'd gotten it about 2/3 of the way there. I think I heard they've since banned all bands from that room...maybe the "Sanchez presentation" had something to do with it...

Phil (phil), Thursday, 19 September 2002 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

My first question would have to be: who are you anyway?

nice feature on the band and their new record at Dusted: http://www.dustedmagazine.com/features/835. Cool idea to have the artist respond directly to points in a review.

Today's Guardian review says "there are bits of it that just sound like someone screaming at a buzzing strip light. "

OK, I really have to hear this now. A lot of my favorite recordings could be described like that!

That's a well-written review, but I'm really thrown by the 6/10 rating. The review certainly reads much more positive than that rating indicates.

"Today's Guardian review says "there are bits of it that just sound like someone screaming at a buzzing strip light. " "

It sounds exactly like this and its beautiful.
Loving the new album, its a real beast.

Been making my love for Rated O known around the board, guess I will here, too.
10:30 at the Oasis soundtracked my walk to work this morning and sounded great.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

"Brownout in Lagos" is INCREDIBLE.

yeah big time. and sounds like something really new for them which is a cool thing to be able to do when you've got so many records out.

dmr, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

Rated O might be favorite thing this year. Might. It's a sprawling monster, but after repeated listens things really start to form a clear shape. Um and you know...doobage and stuff.

Clash's policy indicates that 6 is actually a pretty good rating. It didn't get higher cos from a personal viewpoint I don't think of it as a "listen to it every day" album.

willem, Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:12 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno I think there are some cool sounds on this thing but I miss their songier songs and the whole thing is just too long and overwhelming. I don't hate it or think it's bad but I don't really want to listen to it.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:17 (sixteen years ago)

ah cheers willem! and a weekend so double good, you think it will be sold out?

no idea

rizzx, Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

I'd give it a 7 (love "Brownout in Lagos," don't hear anything on the rest of the album that even comes close; you can let it play through but it's really long.) Favorite albums by them are still Steel Rod EP and Each One Teach One.

xhuxk, Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

I think that Secret Wars(one folowing EOTO) is somewhat slept on.
I very much prefer Oneida in full on Krautpunk mode to Oneida playing songs, but I've always been most appreciative of the live experience, too.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

^^^^ This, on all accounts. I can see why n/a might not feel this as much as the more "song-y" stuff, but for me these guys have morphed right into the direction I like best.

and fantastic in Brighton. love the new record. once you give it a few spins you realise 3 discs isn't that overwhelming.

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i think the 3 discs work pretty damn great. it's less like a record and more like a rehearsal space jam, in a good way

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

I was all set to go tonight until I realised how much work I had to do :(

I thought I'd registered my approval of the new thing - especially the techno influenced jam on CD1 - on this thread but apparently not

Women Respond To Bassong (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:23 (sixteen years ago)

i should probably mention when they play at ATP New York in a few weeks they're basically going to be performing for a whole day, improvising with members of other bands playing the event and recording it all in order to release the highlights. me = pretty hyped.

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:24 (sixteen years ago)

Rated O just gets better and better. The River is such an awesome song. Did anybody nom it for the 05-09 Tracks Poll?

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't nominate any of the songs for the Tracks poll because it was so. fucking. hard. to pick just a few. Just an astounding album all around.

also according to bandmember showtime the last LP in the trilogy is finished and going to be called "Absolute II"

we put on a secret show for them in london five years or so back, and the setlist was 'sheets of easter'/'new day rising'. it was unbelievably awesome.

are you some kinda rap version of marc loi (stevie), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

For my money the best "rock" band in New York right now. Have seen them a bunch of times over the last year and they have always brought it in different ways. Ironic this was bumped today as their "Presents the Ocropolis" show was just announced for the Godspeed ATP, further tempting me to sell everything I own and head over to that. I was quite disappointed that more people didn't place Rated O high on their Best-of lists last year. Best LP released that's even in the orbit of "rock" music.

MFB, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

two months pass...

^Yes, to all of that, although I think Rated O is the kind of album that takes a long time to really sink in, because there's just so much of it and it takes so many different turns.

Will be dling both sets tonight! Love this band so much. Any news on the third in the "Thank Your Parents" trilogy yet? Not that I'm even close to bored with Rated O, but always ready for more.

"I am a fairly respected poster." (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 29 October 2010 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sure I read somewhere that part three isn't coming out until summer 2011, although a quick search for that hasn't turned up any concrete info so I might be misremembering. Kid says it has no drums and will be one disc:

What's the third part going to be like?

KM: It's going to be no drums. It's done, it's finished. I don't know when it's coming out. We have to submit it to the label first but it is done.

Are there any morsels of information you can tell us about it?

KM: It's conceptually coherent and it is one disc long. It's kind of all the same piece.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, agreed, and I'm still looking forward to this more than pretty much everything, but Kid Millions is such a brilliant drummer that its still a little disappointing. Kind of like hearing King Crimson in their prime would have a record without Fripp playing guitar or something.

fromt he Jagjaguwar site:

SONG LIST:
Pre Human
Horizons
Gray Area
Absolute II

Absolute II CD / LP (JAG190, released: 06/07/11)
Absolute II is the final piece in Oneida's Thank Your Parents triptych of releases, begun in 2008 with Preteen Weaponry and followed by 2009's acclaimed triple disc Rated O. With this release, the Brooklyn group concludes a challenging and profound long-term project. The Thank Your Parents triptych, totaling around 200 minutes, is intended to be listened to as a whole or in its component parts. Absolute II stands on its own, in addition to serving as a chapter in an immense whole.

The music on Absolute II is startling, rigorous and demanding. Oneida is a band that has been strongly identified with the frenetic, fluid drumming of Kid Millions and the relentless pulse of classic Krautrock, but this release contains neither audible drums nor identifiable "rock" music. The recordings move freely across accepted boundaries of rhythm, harmony, and tonality – not in the form of dramatic, willful experiment, but as a musical distillation of several themes that have emerged in the wake of Rated O's dynamism: paralysis, entropy, stasis, possibility, and finality among them.

While Oneida is known for unpredictability and sui generis musical forms, this release is particularly resistant to categorization, and it remains difficult to identify precise influences on the music contained here. This is particularly unhelpful, we realize; suggestions and recommendations for updating this info release would be welcome, as the band themselves don't really know or are being recalcitrant.

Yeah, I remember that now. I was kind of hoping it was one of those off-the-cuff things that didn't end up being totally true. Still super psyched for this.

I caught the second part of the Japan benefit Ocrop shows they did. It was really a feat of endurance. Three long (40+ min. IIRC) jams that went through various Oneida modes. I watched Kid collapse onto the kit at the end of the final set. Very worth donating and listening to! They are doing another Ocrop. a weekend in June - three consecutive dates. And they will be "presenting" The Ocropolis at ATP in Sept!!! So much Oneida love!

In a recent issue of the L Magazine (Brooklyn free mag) they posed the question: What's Wrong With The Brooklyn Music Scene? The first answer, from a lovely chap named Jason Diamond, "It's something of a crime that Oneida is still around and they aren't looked at as the best and most important band to come out of this whole Brooklyn renaissance of the last decade. I have no affiliation with the band, but I've watched for years as their contemporaries become famous, or far lesser bands jock their sound. That's a shame."

Nuff said!

They're such a brilliant band. Which is why it might be necessary for me to listen all of Thank Your Parents in order on acid to see if the final part makes more sense like that.

PG Harpy (Doran), Thursday, 28 April 2011 11:25 (fifteen years ago)

God, I'm still getting my head round Rated O.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 28 April 2011 11:29 (fifteen years ago)

Frankly I just don't listen to Oneida as much as I wish I did. They're such a good band, but I have to be in a certain mood and in the right company to really enjoy them. You can't just stick em on in the background while you do the washing up.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 28 April 2011 11:32 (fifteen years ago)

ve watched for years as their contemporaries become famous, or far lesser bands jock their sound.
might be true, but it might be at least in part the band's own fault? they don't seem too interested in pursuing a standard indie rock career, at least in terms of touring/promotion, etc. which is good in a lot of ways, but it also means that they're going to be a little less known. i think it'll all even out in the end.

tylerw, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

Well, to be fair, I think that they used to tow the typical indie rock line. At this point, dudes are married with children, and it's pretty tough to be a family man living on the road. Hence these marathon Ocropolis sessions, I suppose. I mean, I've seen them ten times in my life but none of those shows were in the last five years. And I've only been to NYC twice.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

I think that they are just too extreme/weird/sincere/awesome for mass acceptance.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, probably. i mean, i think it's admirable -- with them, i pretty much know nothing except the records, which is kind of rare these days?

tylerw, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

or just rare in general.

tylerw, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

That sucks. You should really see them! Let's meet at ATP in sept.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

is this ATP UK?

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

I got an email from Kid Millions today (no braggin) talking about taking his Man Forever project on the road.
I'll admit, I was a tad let down by the prospect of a local show with Kid that isn't Oneida. But he wants to tour the country (world?) and just hook up and jam with local drummers wherever he happens to be. I think that's really awesome. I mean, imagine you're an 18 year old kid in Iowa and you get to sit in with Kid and who knows how many other drummers and make a ridiculous amount of noise. That is pretty special, imo.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:25 (fifteen years ago)

ha, yeah that'd be cool.
would love to go to atp one of these days, but i am guessing this year is not the year.

Having been alerted to this, to respond to Doran:

Just to qualify: I thought no drums was a great idea and was really looking forward to some kind of cosmic synth masterpiece but on first listen I found it really airless, monotone and unengaging. That said they're a band who often does stuff that grows on me.

I gotta disagree, this is hooking me from the get-go -- if Neu! could do both the drum overdrive and zone equally well, no reason why any other similarly inclined band can't. I came in with no expectations and find it to be this massive, dramatic howling thing that's all about restraint and sudden, turn-on-a-dime moments. Cryptic as all hell in the best way, and it functions for me on its own and in combination with the larger whole.

I am more kind of amazed that you found a "farfisa in the trash" to be honest

a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

i only have one of their records, never been much of a fan but maybe someone can confirm my stalking:

r0b3rts0n th@ch3r = bobby matador = oneida / nurse & soldier and he lives in boston not nyc?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:10 (fourteen years ago)

yeah shakey i lugged it about three blocks home which was really annoying because i had a shoulder bag with a laptop and the door that covered the folding legs kept swinging open. i can't let something like that get tossed!

here is my cl post: http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/msg/2476835194.html

I confirm all that, CAD. He also used to be on ILX but I'm forgetting his handle at the moment.

Yes, I can confirm this. I can do so because I used to work with his wife Erica who is the other half of nurse and soldier!

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

Oh lol I just the post you revived this with CAD. That is funny. I've never met Rob so he won't know who I am but if you happen to meet Erica she definitely would - we're still facebook friends and stuff. She's great. When I left the place where she works she told me I was definitely the "coolest intern" they'd ever had and gave me a N&S CD as a going away present. Their kids are adorable too. :)

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

Well, if you tell Bobby that Trip Maker says hi, he'll probably react.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i am giving up on my dream of starting an american analog set ripoff band but am glad that of the 4 cl responses i got i seem to have picked the right guy to give it to.

anyway i have no idea how to approach this in person beyond "dude i successfully stalked you" so i'll prob just wish him the best!

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

I would go and watch your AAS ripoff band. Then I would love to be able to go and see AAS as well.

Actual LOL Tolhurst (Doran), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

I got to see AmAnSet in a living room in Lawrence KS and it fucking ruled.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

I saw them a few times in London. Each time people were talking through their sets. One time, there was a guy braying about his overdraft facility for about ten minutes straight through the first two songs. I pinned him to a wall and threatened to knock his teeth out if he didn't shut up. One of the most shameful incidents of my 30s.

(He shut up but the ephemeral bubble of gig enjoyment had been decisively burst by that point.)

Actual LOL Tolhurst (Doran), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

And I remember his DN now, it was Hurlothrombo.

I guess that's a fine line...

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

he just came by--super nice dude! he sort of shyly gave me a copy of the last oneida record as a thank-you (lol i did not let on that i had figured all this out) and was geeking out over the keyb.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

awww - cute

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 02:21 (fourteen years ago)

Confirmed: super-nice dude. Also, he plays the hell out of a keyboard, so I imagine it is a constant struggle to keep enough farfisas in playable shape around.
