I say a resounding CLASSIC!!!
Think about it. Motley Crue, Whitesnake ,Guns N Roses ,Poison, Warrant,Winger, Love/Hate,Skid Row, Cinderella, Faster Pussycat(the most underrated band of all time), Tesla, Firehouse and so much more! Great classic bands. Who were REAl men. Knew how to party hard ™
They took drugs,shagged audience members had hundreds of groupies.They acted like how bands should.
The fans, especially the ladies could dress up and look like proper chicks. Instead of that darned grunge where it made everyone dress like a dyke. Girls should be allowed to make upa nd look feminine if they want. Sadly Nirvana/Pearl Jam /Grunge killed off the most exciting scene in the 80s.
Sadly the particular success of Pearl Jam killed off Glam Metal.
Leading to the whining , depressing state of 'rock' called Nu Metal as it is now.

Oh how i wish for the halycon days of 80s metal. The audience is out there. But not on VH1. Did you see how excited the kids were on MTV Awards last night when Axl Rose belted out the finest rock songs of our generations.
The boys are back in town!
Lets hope more bands find the hairspray,the make up and amps turned up to 11! and show that metal is the most dangerous form of music alive. By being 'pop metal' it can subvert the kidz.

Guns N Roses, Motley Crue etc may still be going....but then again so are Gerry & The Pacemakers..... Chicken in the basket 80s metal means nothing to the kids of today.
About as relevant as Ki$$ or ZZ Top or Hanoi Rocks or Alice Cooper (and nowhere near as good)
All those bands you mentioned removed PUNK ROCK from the music. NY Dolls,Aerosmith,Hanoi Rocks knew about attitude and punk rock. Sadly the airbrushed,turgid mtv hair metal bands didnt.

punk was the worst thing to happen to the music industry. Look at it now. dreadful skate punk or ska punk. At least ska punkers have fun. just a pity the music is so shit.
If the industry realised that theres good party metal bands out there then the kids would buy that instead. Proper music.
At least back then there was guitarists who werent ashamed to be good!
Its time rock went back to state of the art modern production like they did in the 80s. Its the only way to get new sounds.
I hope we get a new wave of glam bands and the older ones make as succesful a comeback as G N R.

Sorry, but I was a teenager when it was at its height & have bad memories. It seemed to lack any subtlety, whereas some great things came out of punk - the independent thing for one, which spawned new interest in virtually every other form of music at a time when major labels would only sign rock bands (alongside the ubiquitous manufactured stuff).

80s sleaze/rock'n'roll/hair/glamrock: Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Warrant, Ratt, Pantera, Guns 'n Roses, Twisted Sister: DUD!!!! Gimmicky 70s rock 'n roll which traumatized a generation. Red spandex, poodle hair and pink makeup. A Ziggy Stardust nightmare. I've-got-clamps-on-my-testicles vocals, endless guitar masturbation and sloppy AC/DC ripoff rhythms. DIE DIE DIE!!!!!

What about Nelson? they had great hair! The best thing about the 80s metal/glam bands was they looked good. Image is sometimes secondary to the music. Lets face it MC5,Stooges,Velvet Underground,Bowie had great images but the music wasnt that good.

Weird, most of the female metal fans that I knew in the eighties wore T-shirts and blue jeans everyday.

Oh, and Cinderella were Classic, but mostly in their later, bluesier period. Ratt were Classic because they blessed us with "Round And Round." Guns And Roses were Classic because they fooled everyone into believing that they were Classic. All of the others that you mentioned are Duds.

Then again, my idea of a real man is Tom Verlaine or Kurt Cobain, so what do I know?

Whats wrong with 80s pop metal?
If we're gonna have metal i'd rather have it POP than noisy crap like Sepultura,Slayer,Slipknot or indulgent arty metal bores like QOTSA, Tool,Kyuss.

Anyone else remember John Mendelsson's explaination for this? He said that they dressed that way so that groupies would know how they should be dressed when they went backstage.

Maura: I saw black jeans occasionally, too. I should have just said jeans.

Also, I thought that Jackyl was an nineties band. They're classic, too: any metal band that has the sense of humor to put a chainsaw on one of their records is a classic in my book.

I'm still not sure how you can go this many posts about 80s metal without mentioning either Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica or Megadeth.

Those hairspray bands sucked. Freakin' Dio or Accept was a whole lot better than any of those bands.

Subject for discussion: The eighties were the decade in which hard rock/heavy metal replaced pop as the mainstream of rock music. Or should I say the nineties?

I cant believe anyone would listen to hair metal. Pop and metal shouldnt mix. If anyone grew up in that decade then they would know how bad that music was.
It was metal for people who didnt like metal. I remeber at high school some people liked those bands and they always said to others"Its not heavy metal,its more soft rock" as if it justified it all!
Those who listened to it were the ones who believed rock was proper music and pop wasnt. Yet they were listening to the most mainstream chart orientated music at that time.

Much of it was enjoyable but I don't know that it was a lot better than any other period of rock music. It wasn't exactly a creative high point, you know? We just like it more because we grew up on it. Most of the 70s movements that preceded it were probably more substantial but it might have been as good as grunge. It didn't produce many great albums. (I'm curious how many of its advocates here listen to Pride or Open Up And Say Ahhh. . . or the first Skid Row album on a regular basis.) Contemporary modern rock radio probably has more interesting music to offer in all honesty. Much more variety, more efforts at hybridizing different genres including the incorporation of non-rock elements. I'm not really sure that classic rock radio has improved since it started playing Def Leppard more than Deep Purple.

No, I don't judge the music on that... well, in a way I do. It makes me feel uncomfortable to listen to it because of all the baggage that goes with it. (I actually really do like early GnR, and someone mentioned Anthrax at the thread's top, who were quality). However, I can't call myself a "fan" of it, not only because most of it fails to appeal to me (on the whole, I don't like guitar driven music that much), but, secondly, it makes me feel like the consensus view on this is that it's great to like, as long as you don't really like it, which is a view I'm fucked if I'm subscribing to. It's exactly the same way that student cheese parties have made me slowly despise "Build Me Up Buttercup", which I used to love before university. Maybe I'm wrong, but... it makes me feel uncomfortable.

The German Poison played excellent thrash/proto-black metal (like "In The Sign Of Evil"-era Sodom) and became quite a cult band with their demos. The resulting album's good too. The band is long dead, although some members started a new band with the very silly name of "RU Dead?". Never heard any recordings of that band though.

CLASSIC!! I listened to Nuclear motherfuckin' Assault today. There's some great pics on their website of the band playing - still just as drunk and crazy as they always were. There's a great one of John Connelly with an empty Budweiser case over his head rockin' out lying on the stage. The next time Slayer does one of their alcohol tours they need to get Nuclear Assault on the bill and I'll follow the tour everywhere and be at every show.

Survive is by far my favorite Nuclear Assault album - go figure. The one before it was too hit and miss and they lost some of the hardcore edge on Handle With Care - especially on the Glenn Evans tracks.

'Fight To Be Free' and 'Survive' are still some of the most intense metal songs I've ever heard. One of my all-time favorite metal moments is where John Connelly screams "Its time to stand up and make yourself FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" on 'Fight To Be Free'

You can probably tell I really love that album. Its an all-time favorite. I hope theyre iTunes friendly too. Whatever that means.

'Rise From The Ashes' is probably the best song though. I remember listening to that shit so loud and that part where Dan Lilker plays that really fast bassline by himself and they go into that fuckin INSANE fast part - thats just amazing. They were and still are such an underrated band. They are right behind Slayer for me when it comes to just brutal, agressive hardcore metal.
