For the last couple months ive listened to nothing but this dude. This is total late pass for me obv -- i just assumed he was, like, a Hell Rell type talent for a long time & bought the "NY fell of" narrative past when it was fair. But now I can't get this stuff off my ipod.

drop the top / picture me rollin / stake sause / blow me a dub / goon music / i warned u / flash dance / where do i go / all my life ... this stuff is kind of perfect to me, blend of really melodic ear & lyrical rapping, matter-of-fact real talk and a reggae-style inclination for reversioning classic pop jams ("do for love" "I want you" even effin "Englishman in new york"). dame grease's production is extroverted pop ish but with a real dilapidated feel, appropriate for post-golden era new york.

anyone else feelin these band

flopson, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 06:45 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i'm into this to a point, like i said when he came up in swag last year thru the first rnt comp. i got into him thru noz, predictably enough. this post, in fact. deej is actually in the comments there but since a gucci track was up first i guess there was no way he was gonna make it to the end. anyway i ended up dling a lot of tapes, reading everything i could abt him and actually wrote the original version of his current wikipedia entry for some reason.

i think noz realized he was doing something unique in NY with his relationship to melody, sort of like a less embarrassed, less cynical 50. 50 often sounds like he's too gangster to really try to sing, so he'll just indicate melody enough to get it across or condescend to make it commercial. with max b his woozy relationship with melody is inherent in every track, inherent to who he is & what he's doing on the track. anyway i agree coke wave is a good starting point, & quarantine next. i have a few more but i can't really distinguish them tbh. there was always another tape coming up. on further investigation btw, last year's A Wave Called Yes is a mix of old and 'new', i presumed it was all old because it has shit like "tattoos on her ass" on it plus, u know, he's in jail.

i presumed he was gonna be in jail forever, plus after the first flush of summer i think his mixtapes are just a nice listen, so i'm not really excited abt him as a future talent at this point but i'm enjoying bumping coke wave again, it's sounding gr8.

zvookster, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 13:20 (thirteen years ago) link

This whole tape is great forgettable and fun sing song rap in the way that Kid Cudi’s publicist would probably throw around those words, except for real. (It’s probably not new either in the sense that Max might have dropped six tapes since.) Here Max and one of his weed carriers from straight out the Roy Rogers Fixins Bar float around on this ethereal track. It’s like something the Block Beataz would whip up had they grown up on the Heatmakers instead of Mannie Fresh.

noz on "all my life" & Quarantine from the above link

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 14:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i've got the "best of the wave" mixtape - it's some dope thugged out melodic music but i don't have too much to say about it really. 50 is the obvious reference point for me. what's the crossover with this tape and the others you've mentioned btw?

pete rock did a song w/ max b & it bangs.

heres what it said when pete rock talked about it in vibe:
NY's Finest--Pete Rock (2008)
“I got introduced to Jim Jones through someone who was working with him. I called him up and said, ‘Hey, I’m going to come through your session with some beats.’ We did a song called ‘G’s Up,’ which was on Jim Jones’ first solo album. Then from that came the song ‘We Roll’ from New York’s Finest. This was before Max B got locked up. Jim told me that Max actually convinced him to jump on that song because he didn’t understand how to come in on the beat. Max was kind of helping him out [laughs]. But it came out excellent.

well the being high part probably is

wavy g. wavegarten (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:03 (thirteen years ago) link

this reminds me of the oj album in that it sounds like a bunch of tracks from the mixtapes, without dj drops. theres not enough of a substantial change to make it feel like "ahh, the debut" the way you did going into say GRODT. i do think this record is pretty dope, but in a low key way & much like gucci doesnt stand out in his catalog of mixtapes

so fly zone (D-40), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i pretty much feel it -- i think it's easily one of the best albums of the year so far but i think lots of rappers are dealing w/ this same problem

it seems like you can go three ways

-- go full pop like b.o.b. wiz khalifa & pretty much abandon any trace of rap in your music, at least the rap of your mixtapes

-- go halfway like gucci did w/ SVRD and end up w/ some softserve joints that no one wants to hear interspersed w/ hi-fi versions of your bread & butter like "heavy" or w/e

-- make an album quality mixtape like max or waka or boosie that has better quality & quality control than your albums & no dj drops but doesn't feel like a 'growth' of sorts (maybe the waka is objectionable in this context)

wavy g. wavegarten (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

waka's an exception cuz he didnt have nearly as much material out as boosie or max. but thats otherwise otm

so fly zone (D-40), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

max's other prob here of course being that hes in jail & cant record his own 'lemonade' or w/e

wtf happened to zvookster? he was annoying itt

D-40, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:37 (thirteen years ago) link

the big zvookster post is the best in the entire thread fyi esp this

i think noz realized he was doing something unique in NY with his relationship to melody, sort of like a less embarrassed, less cynical 50. 50 often sounds like he's too gangster to really try to sing, so he'll just indicate melody enough to get it across or condescend to make it commercial. with max b his woozy relationship with melody is inherent in every track, inherent to who he is & what he's doing on the track

flopson, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:39 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont think he quite has it there, altho i agree that max has a unique take on melody -- its a starting pt
but i dont want to give it away 4 free if u get my meaning :D

D-40, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:41 (thirteen years ago) link

also all his other posts were distracting/annoying

D-40, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:41 (thirteen years ago) link

... this stuff is kind of perfect to me, blend of really melodic ear & lyrical rapping, matter-of-fact real talk and a reggae-style inclination for reversioning classic pop jams ("do for love" "I want you" even effin "Englishman in new york"). dame grease's production is extroverted pop ish but with a real dilapidated feel, appropriate for post-golden era new york.

this is really great

just fwiw

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:44 (thirteen years ago) link

of course then he went & pulled an oj the juiceman on me & released that terrible mix cd w/ lex luger beats real & fake

D-40, Friday, 15 April 2011 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

I have now listened to both Coke Wave and the new album. I also like French Montana, hadn't heard anything of his before apart from that single with Curren$y from last year. Anyway i really like this stuff, but i always enjoy a rapper who's not afraid to indulge in some semi-amateurish crooning so it definitely ticks that box.

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Sunday, 1 May 2011 08:29 (twelve years ago) link

max b & jacka are like inverses of each other; one's a west coast rapper integrating east coast & the other is an east coast integrating west; they make total sense to compare.

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Sunday, 1 May 2011 08:31 (twelve years ago) link

it also makes sense to compare those dudes bcuz of their rapping styles, which i did in that para

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Sunday, 1 May 2011 08:41 (twelve years ago) link

no it doesn't, pretty much the only connection between those 3 artists is "these are people that the author of this review loves and has to bring up at every opportunity"

hong does your geirden gro (some dude), Sunday, 1 May 2011 10:57 (twelve years ago) link

i dont usually like to get into this because i think the writing stands on its own & i address that within it. if you need more, i still disagree with you.

both rappers i was using as examples because they are both max b's contemporaries and have a similar delivery style -- cool remove vs. the more emotion-on-sleeve style of z-ro or boosie

gucci was brought up primarily because hes the main pitchfork-acclaimed street rapper in the style from the last couple of years, so it makes sense to use him as a reference point

max b & the jacka are basically mirror images of each other, born less than a year apart, one incorporating west coast rap into an east coast style & the other incorporating the opposite. they both have relaxed, sing-song flows that are very melodic. of course, there are lots of differences too, but the framework to both their styles is very similar

also, have you even listened to the jacka? do you even know what you're talking about?

its not like these are 'artists i bring up at every opportunity' because i have some single-minded obsession w/ them, its because i think they are three artists whose significance to the art of rapping is real and observable & evident, that they are important rappers for the form. its beyond 'personal favorites.' there are lots of rap artists im into that don't fit into this -- an example is someone like AZ.

but you have it backwards -- my taste often tends to be more driven by what i think feels important vis a vis rap's development & my values w/r/t aesthetic choices made in that history; its not that i like an artist & try to justify that after the fact by making wild claims for them

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Sunday, 1 May 2011 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

i realize that this perspective on criticizing rap is very anti-some dude (sorry abt using your real name when shit got heated i wasnt paying attention) bcuz your style tends to be, & if im wrong correct me, very into rappers who dont make a lot of grand arguments of importance for themselves (something max b & jack & gucci all do) but are sort of workhorse low-key dudes like styles & post-roc freeway. which is cool; but i dont appreciate being told my approach is somehow not thought out or is simply about pushing my taste on other people when theres a lot more to it

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Sunday, 1 May 2011 14:05 (twelve years ago) link

i should say, my taste as represented by rap arguments on the internet with people who care about that sort of thing often tends to be driven ...

bcause my entire taste isnt represented by the kinds of artists we all talk about in these debates, necessarily. a lot of times i see what im doing as a corrective, which means im working on championing artists that i like who may not have as much of a critical profile but imo are doing something observably significant that deserves that kind of profile

it wasn't, and i didn't say it was. you're the one who has to bring a gun to a knife fight and post 20 times every time someone says 1 or 2 brief things about/to you. do you want your thread back or not? say 'yes' and i won't post here again, promise.

dude youve been doing these drive-by sniping zings about my writing on artists that i focus on for months now, stop acting like this is out of nowhere. it seems like you have an issue w/ the way i approach it, & you absolutely do bring it up like its some kind of flawed approach to criticism instead of the kind of 'thats our deej' type ish flopson was talking abt.

and you prob read 20k words on ilx in a given day so you can stop acting like what i wrote upthread was some kind of dense essay too

ugh c'mon man i pointed out something i thought was funny with no hidden agenda and as usual you bring some "there are unspoken ISSUES we need to HASH OUT here i don't appreciate this THINLY VEILED ATTACKS" shit that makes this feel like we're in marriage counseling. we can talk about this if you want but not if you're gonna make it feel like a group therapy session.

this sounds likea point-blank 'what you wrote here was incorrect' criticism, not a 'lol, deej mentioned artist he talks about a lot' ribbing. youre backpedaling into 'just zings bruv' which is fine but when u first posted it read to me as some kind of disagreement w/ its relevence to the piece rather than lighthearted lols

um, which one of us is famous for saying "i have been otm on this thread"?

some dude, Monday, 2 May 2011 16:40 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know any of these guys' music & I know D-40 will think this is just me takin a shot which it isn't it's just me talking about something I've been thinking about since I was a kid which comes up in this thread but FWIW probably nothing but other SoCal grampas will be able to attest to the following: the LA Times for years had a writer named Robert Hilburn for whom absolutely everything had to be framed in the context of the artists he liked best. He would have framed that differently: he would have said "these are the artists who are important and who frame the current pop dialogue" or something like that. Nevertheless, absolutely 100% of his readers lol'd at him twice a week because he was completely incapable of reviewing anything at all without referring at least once to Springsteen or Elvis Costello or X, and for a while there to Big Country and the Alarm. Once every review, it'd be like, "INXS are good, but, in lacking the vibrant optimism of Bruce Springsteen or the cutting worldly-wise wit of Elvis Costello, they come up short" and it got to be very, very lol. Growing up with this, back when I had designs on being a critic, I took this from it: no matter how certain you are that the artists you feel are most important in the current dialogue are, and no matter how certain you are that comparisons are fitting and apt, if you have some artists whose names you seem to mention in pretty much everything you write, people are going to clown you, either to your face or behind your back. If there are artists you namecheck regularly, people's radar will be up about it and they will clown even when you'd be likely to say "look I know I'm always talking about Springsteen but these guys really sound like Springsteen. D-40, I take from the way you talk about it that your writing is important to you, so I thought I would share this idea, if it's unwelcome, no harm intended, the end.

bananas foster wallace (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 2 May 2011 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

fwiw my problem w/ whiney's review is, i see the reason he made those comparisons, but for me that kind of writing is pandering, that an artist shouldnt have to be justified on alt-rapper approved grounds to be worth hearing & can stand on his own two. its a different comparison than what i was doing, which was connecting lines between three seemingly unrelated artists who actually approach the form very similarly.

fwiw because im tired of this 'deej is obsessed w/ [x]' coming up everytime we talk about any of an entire series of artists ive talked a lot about on ilx, im going to set this out there:

1) some artists are talked about a lot by critics / on ilx, some are not

2) if an artist i like is not talked about a lot by critics, i will spend more time here talking about it

3) if an artist - say dj quik or e-40 or gucci, for examples of artists i used to talk about a lot MORE on ilx - gets picked up by wider discussions here, i tend to talk about them less, because theres no need to get a ball rolling

4) if an artist is not, i tend to spend more time talking about that artist, because what he's accomplishing artistically feels undervalued to me, so i try to convince others of his/her value

5) none of these things are particularly related to my reference to the jacka in a max b review, which was more about identifying different approaches to the art of rapping between two similarly-minded artists.

can we be done now?

aero was describing how that kind of thing can LOOK to readers regardless of intent and was recommending you consider that when you write, which i agreed with. but if you want to be an either/or absolutist about it, that's cool, i personally think those 2 perspectives are not mutually exclusive.

Like, you can't just drop it that Ship doesn't see eye to eye with you in terms of the jacka and gucci mane, you just have to keep going. And I don't think it's a horrible characteristic on its face -- it works for you when you're constantly evangelizing about music, but when it's about your own points it gets tedious and borders on maniacal imo

heres a short version.

'yeah i figured you guys would get a kick out of that but i did it anyway cuz i think there is a connection between the artists -- i can go into detail if you like but it wasn't just a cataloging of the artists i like'

now you wouldnt be able to make jokes about how much i wrote, as if that was an indicator of something. would this convo have turned out differently? would i be overreacting? am i taking a 'joke' too seriously bcuz i take issue w/ you saying that i did that 'out of nowhere'? am i not allowed to take issue w/ that? are all zings hands-off because they're just jokes, even when its sorta implied that you mean some of the shit behind it?

i guess what im saying is, im careful not to 'lose perspective' or draw connections where i dont think there are any, so when you were clowning like id failed to do that it felt like you were dissing my writing & legitimacy rather than the fact that im a fan of whatever rappers.

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 01:30 (twelve years ago) link

it is true that hardly anybody has any idea how to record drums any more - take a record with well-recorded drums to any decent mastering engineer & you'll see the guy's eyes get wide & he'll be like "WHERE'D YOU HAVE THIS DONE, WHO DID THIS" and you'll hear the horror stories of the garbage that gets brought into mastering facilities with instructions to "clean it up"

coo coo khal (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 01:32 (twelve years ago) link

im going to rewrite that

im careful when it comes to approaching my writing to keep as much perspective as i can so the audience can trust what im saying, to avoid drawing connections that dont exist, or being anything other than 100% honest (as much as that is possible) when writing about this stuff, so when you were clowning the writing it felt like you were mocking my writing rather than my interest in the aforementioned rappers. which i will put up with from anonymous ppl on message boards, but i take the writing itself seriously, and if you make some joke about it that feels like youre arguing with how ive written something, i'll probably respond seriously. people are defensive about their writing!

what's yr method for lovely drum recordings? it has always seemed hard from my v limited home studio type experiences.

I don't think you can really get great drum sounds at home unless you have a pretty big home and/or a SERIOUS ear like Phil Elvrum who could probably get great drum tones in a refrigerator if he had to. But I don't record, I just work with people who do & I've watched dudes with proper ears set up the drums & listen for fuckin' EVER (drives me nuts) and then after what seems like ages they'll start nodding while the drummer's just playing whatever and move a fader into place and you hear it if you're in the control room, it's like, oh, wow, that really seemed like a waste of time but it most assuredly was not because now this sounds so good I just want to listen to it by itself. Otherwise it's a question of not settling for shitty mics, keeping yourself out of it enough to really just be listening instead of kidding yourself about what sounds good or doesn't, and being extremely patient - mic placement, understanding whoever's technique you're recording, asking questions about the actual song so instead of having a default "if I have a hard-hitting drummer, I use an RE-20 on the kick" you're saying "what's going to sound good on this song?" one drum/cymbal at a time.

I seriously think recording is the art of profound patience, I would be a terrible producer because I'm very "hit record let's get this now"

oops yeah i guess i made it sound easy and john is right, it's not, but i meant more the 80s brought so much gating and all that stuff and now it's even worse, like i meant use good mics and a good room and a producer that knows how to do it and don't mess it up with processing

coo coo khal (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 01:47 (twelve years ago) link

whatever happened to melissa joan hart. a friend of mine is a pretty decent sound engineer, and his proficiency seems rooted in the same stoicism/reptilian focus that makes him a champ at shit like rubiks cubes and world of warcraft; just being able to keep tweaking and revising over&over oblivious to hunger or fatigue. but I think approaching it from a sort of more producerly standpoint is worthwhile, keeping you focused on your ears and what the sound is up to, and it seems taking the time to relisten is the only real way, so

ogmor, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 01:57 (twelve years ago) link

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 17:18 (twelve years ago) link

my issue w/ al basically comes down to, for whatever reason, his 'zings' often come across like personal criticisms while others dont. they come across like dismissive condescension rather than just-lolz. obviously, he doesnt give a fuck, which is fine, but he cant act shocked if someone takes it personally

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 17:18 (twelve years ago) link

kinda lukewarm on this dude. i really like "where do i go" and other joints like "live comfortable" but unless he really connects with his hooks or like, wakes up on his verses, he's pretty boring. it's mostly his vioce for me, which is really dry/anonymous - i mean i've loved other rappers with shitty articulation but he doesn't have 50's knack for melody or like, gucci's bounce or deep pocket of flows. or the sense of humor of either. idk maybe i have to listen to more

yeah i think u have to listen more pretty much everything u said is 100% wrong/the opposite of max b reality

flopson, Thursday, 5 May 2011 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

haha

i think his style's just not what i dig

ha was gonna say -- like or dislike him, vocal personality, 'knack for melody,' 'deep pocket of flows' are all things dude totally ownz

not that he doesnt have some blander songs

BUT i am a gang starr fanboy & find myself drawn to dudes who are sort of anti-ludacris types in their delivery

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Thursday, 5 May 2011 23:26 (twelve years ago) link

cool, relaxed, behind the beat, understated, etc

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Thursday, 5 May 2011 23:26 (twelve years ago) link

"knack" was my operative word really - again all i've heard is the debut but while he definitely has a tendency toward melody, to me he uses it more as a crutch than anything else - hit/miss ratio on the hooks isn't that great imo

"understated" is otm i guess, can't really pin down what bores me about dudes like him yet for the most part I dig someone like mega

i think i'm actually fronting a bit - i actually enjoyed it more than i'm admitting, even if i didn't like the aesthetic - kind of the converse of your typical "didn't like it but i respected it" line

really i think it's his voice more than anything

so much of max's appeal for me is in the total package of how his music operates -- how he slurs his words, the sly humor, how equally sleazy & charming he is (not an easy thing to pull off) -- the vibe is incredibly unique

I keep going back to Model of Entropy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zw95xdfMQnY

I'm particularly fixated on the way he sings "truuuuuuue/bluuuuuuuue" like his voice is about to give, also the way he drags his sssssssssssss's. These type of suave little details that Max seems to be loaded with are what keeps me coming back for more.

He is new for me, still getting acquainted with all this but that track really stands out. That tight snare has a warm pop to it, sounds really nice at high volumes with that sub bass rolling around underneath.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 24 June 2011 05:33 (twelve years ago) link

thats one of the few traxx w/out dame grease production -- agreed that it stands out tho

arachno-misogynist (D-40), Friday, 24 June 2011 06:21 (twelve years ago) link

That explains why it doesn't really sound like anything else on VS. Also just realized he might be singing "too" in staid of "true."

Currently serving a 75-year jail sentence, rapper Max B is keeping busy making use of old and new technology to make new music. Old technology (the payphone through which he raps over collect calls) and new technology Legitmix, an innovative new platform that allows the Hood Internet-produced track "Hold On" to be released with an uncleared Madonna sample.

Legitmix lets you legitimately give away or sell your work by creating a Legitmix file for your remix, mash-up or DJ set. A Legitmix file is like an instruction set fans can use to seamlessly recreate your work using their copy of the source tracks. Legitmix can search a fan's computer for source tracks so they only need to purchase the ones they are missing. The recreated remix is identical to your original version and can be automatically imported into a fan's iTunes library. In a few clicks fans can buy your work and the original tracks you sampled.
