De La Soul - Classic or Dud?

Is De La Soul dead? Do they deserve to be? Is their first album overrated and their second criminally underrated?

My name is Kenny, Thursday, 22 August 2002 19:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

All first three albums are classic, and I would say that it's Buhloone Mind State that's underrated, not ...is Dead, as that seems pretty highly acclaimed. Stakes is High is relatively bland, but still a little fun. But I think BMS might be the most consistently good.

Nick A., Thursday, 22 August 2002 19:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

the first album is a masterpiece in my book - modern classic and a benchmark of hip hop and sampling invention. i was less keen on what i heard on the second album (Keep The Faith etc.) but i'd say De La have been fairly consistent thru the 90s as well with strong tracks like 'Stakes Is High', 'Breakadawn' and 'Ego Trippin' springing to mind. I never checked out 'Art Official Intelligence' in full but the strength of the singles (Ooooh, All Good, Thru Ya City) indicated this was their best work since '3 Feet High & Rising' and confirms their status as reliable elder statesmen of the genre...the guest spot by Pos on Mint Royale's 'Show Me' last year was another winner for me

blueski, Thursday, 22 August 2002 19:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have yet to hear a De La Soul album that wasn't classic.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 August 2002 19:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

My opinion: First two albums: classic wonderful amazing, with DLSID edging out 3FH&R for Best in Genre. I was bored with Buhloone Mindstate, but I think Stakes Is High is the underrated one. I haven't fallen in love with the two AOI discs; but they're spunky and funny and energetic enough for me to think De La might have one more great record in them.

Matt C., Thursday, 22 August 2002 19:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

A band I've always loved but never listened to as often as I should, oddly enough -- and when I mean 'should,' I mean in the sense that everything I've heard demanding relistening! Time to dig out those old CDs again, I sez.

DK, Thursday, 22 August 2002 19:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think the song that got them in all the trouble "Transmissions Live From Mars"... instrumental downtempo (the imfamous Turtles sample) with French instructional dialogue over the top...

is STILL a really nice listen. if you take that song for face value away from the rest of the album, shows a real weird foreshadow of things Mo Wax/Beastie/Beck (mostly things I never cared too much for), but that weird international downtempo weird sample... it seemed to preface all that Cibo Matto/Stereolab/Stereototal (slow) modern rock-hop.

Not too big on De La Soul though; however, check this song out again if you haven't recently.

great albums, terrible live show. astonishingly boring and full of all the pointless posturing and entouragism that de la soul has always seemed to stand against. strange.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Back in '91/'92 they were one of the first hip-hop acts I really got into since my RUN-D.M.C.-soundtracked l'il-brat-hood days were washed aside by a torrent of Classic Rock Radio Immersion. I mean, you give a sugar-addled spaz-kid high school freshman a cassette tape that includes a skit featuring the phrase "what'd'you know about music, hamster penis?" and a song about a molested student out for revenge against a Macy's Santa and some samples from "Grease" and a great sex-rhymes track (with those "What's that? In your pocket?" samples -- oh damn) and Kermit imitations and beatdown anthems laid upon tapdancing music and "Bitties In The BK Lounge" and "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'"!!!! well you got an all-time favorite album for life, at least if what happened to me is any indication. 3 Feet High was great too but De La Soul Is Dead meant more to me back then than any new release album besides Nevermind -- and I haven't listened to Nevermind in years.
Boy, I got a little out of hand there.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 23 August 2002 01:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Despite "Eye Know" and "Roller Skating" in particular, never really got them until AOI. The early stuff seemed too crude in terms of sonics and subject matter; the middle stuff seemed to have ditched their vitality. Mosaic Thump brought back their fun side and mixed it with supersmooth sageness; Bionix is simply the sexiest hip-hop album ever.

B:Rad, Friday, 23 August 2002 02:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Count me in as someone who loved Bionix - the opening trio of "Bionix", "Baby Phat" and "Simply" are awesomely zing-like, both shiveringly tactile and open-hearted, generous, funny. I also like the generally-panned R&B-ish tracks - "Special" and "Am I Worthy Of You" are just so slinktastic.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 23 August 2002 08:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Classic. I even bought the "edited" version of the last one, by mistake, and liked it just dandy. I still think BUHLOONE is more consistently great, yeah, but the first was the most hyper, and the best.

matt riedl (veal), Friday, 23 August 2002 14:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Great albums, but my main memory of De La Soul is how out of place Ring Ring Ring sounded at the time from both rock and rap at the time.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 23 August 2002 14:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Don't be put off by their (sometimes deserved) rep for slack live shows. The most recent First Avenue gig was as funny and sweaty and unselfconscious as any rap show I've seen.

I played "Tryin'" before my brother's wedding a couple months ago, just to calm my nerves on a stressful day, and I damn near started to weep. The song is about being ready for the rest of your life, by guys obviously not ready for the rest of their lives.

All the records are great, but De La is greater than ever.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 23 August 2002 19:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

_De La Soul Is Dead_ is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Period. Everything on it is just classic (yes, even "Keepin' The Faith").

i totally forgot to mention 'Rollerskatin' Jam Named Saturday' which is possibly better than anything on 'Three Feet High & Rising' - except 'Say No Go' and 'Transmitting Live From Mars' perhaps

blueski, Friday, 23 August 2002 19:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Having only heard Bionix and the debut, pure classic. I have a feeling the rest of their work is just as brilliant, and it will be obtained eventually.

Yeah, I lived in the Twin Cities area from the age of 1 onwards. I went to high school in Hastings (so it is more St. Paul than Minneapolis). I can tell you all kinds of fucked up stories about that town.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 25 August 2002 12:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'd say the AOI albums are a major development in hip hop: mature music that isn't sapped of its wit or energy, and that doesn't devolve into crankery (PE) or self-parody (LL).

The Twin Cities hereby cast all their votes for "classic."

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Sunday, 25 August 2002 13:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

ha I never voted! but I like de la is dead so you can have mine.

3 feet is nice but they got sooo much better at everything

discovering that third de la album was when they really clicked for me, i think, and i started to actually have ideas about their music for the first time that really felt like my own rather than sort of blindly buying into one narrative or another, which i did when i heard the first two records ... i liked them but not enough to think about them. buhloone was kind of like a breakthrough (breakathrough?) where i realized De La were great and worth giving a shit about on a personal, rewind-this-record-over-and-over level rather than just paying my dues as a rap nerd by touching all the canon bases or whatever

i dont know if i think its the 'best' any more but its definitely the one de la record i most fondly associate w/ being a teenager and really getting rap, climbing up a neighbor's fire escape to watch the sun set on a rooftop w/ it playing in the headphones. good times

deej, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 19:52 (sixteen years ago) link

buhloone is kinda impersonal to me.... i gotta admit i love de la is dead just for having so many songs that are the shit and this big smart ass unified concept and i love stakes is high cuz it was the first de la album i actually got when it dropped but all of em are the shit including aoi ones and grind date

allmusic is OTM here:

Stakes Is High is often overshadowed by its predecessors in the De La Soul discography and, upon its release, it was lost in a summer of great import and consequence. Released on the same day as Nas' alter-ego epic It Was Written and sandwiched between albums like Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt and OutKast's ATLiens, it's very possible that Stakes Is High didn't get its rightful burn in respective tape decks and CD players. Aside from that, hip-hop was fully embroiled in the East Coast vs. West Coast beef, something in which the Native Tongues vanguards were seeming nonplayers. But it's under these conditions that De La offered an album that was not only sonically excellent and creative and pure, but an album with the year's most relevant and prescient message. The stakes were indeed high. Inter-genre violence was bubbling beneath the surface, overshadowing the turn hip-hop was taking — a turn away from what was a mid-'90s renaissance of the late-'80s golden age excellence, quickly evolving into what is now known as the jiggy era. On "The Bizness" — a song featuring the quickly maturing Common before his lyrical touchstone One Day It'll All Makes Sense — Dave spits "Do not connect us with those champagne-sippin' money-fakers." Hip-hop was at a crossroads, a precipice — whatever you'd like to call it — and De La were concerned. "Supa Emcees" asked "Whatever happened to the MC?" and cautioned "MCing ain't for you!" "Dog Eat Dog" asserted that folks were "fucking my love in all the wrong places" — an obvious metaphor. "Baby Baby Baby Baby Ooh Baby" is a sharp satire of the Bad Boy-style hip-hop that was beginning its reign, fit with a beat as Hitmen-esque as an '80s R&B revision with Posdnuos rhyming in a conspicuously Biggie-like cadence. No, this was not an unabashed hip-hop classic like 3 Feet High and Rising and De La Soul Is Dead, or as provocative and fresh as some of its 1996 peers. It was, however, an entertaining and unapologetic De La album that placed hip-hop in front of a mirror. It's also an album that did its part to solve what De La were articulating as a problem, ushering in what would become the newer version of the Native Tongues, with multi-production from a young Jay Dee, Mos Def's introduction to most listeners, the aforementioned Common cameo, and hooks from Erykah Badu and Zhané, artists leading the burgeoning neo-soul movement of the time. It was as if De La were providing an antidote. Stakes Is High is an important album of this era, an album of great production and the most skilled of MCs who diagnosed symptoms of what they believed were hip-hop health complications — but it offered the medicine.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 17:29 (fourteen years ago) link

The Art Official Inteligence albums are good - Mosaic Thump is the better one (nice trick making the skits a showcase for dope freestyles), but Bionix at least has two great tracks, sampling Gainsbourg and Carl Tjader. The Grind Date is way more quality, tho - it's about as fun and exciting as a conscious rap release could get this decade. A lot of really cool beats, great guest spots (Ghostface, Flava Flav)...them doing "Much More" on Dave Chapelle is like one of my all-time fave popcult moments. Even the cover booklet is great (it has this calendar-style gimmick.) They've become pretty good producers, too, and this Supa Dave West guy they've got doing most of the beats on recent albums is a talent.

It's funny, I'm a big fan but I hardly ever listen to what they're rhyming about tbh.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 17:35 (fourteen years ago) link

The first two albums:

"3 feet high" had lots of 'darker' moments, but everyone noticed the 'daisy' stuff.

"DLS is Dead" had lots of light/daisy moments as well, but people were expecting those but got 'surprised' by the darker stuff this time.

They are both great albums.

I vividly remember the spring of 1989. I was on a trip to colonial Williamsburg, and there was a freak blizzard that dumped something like two feet of snow, shutting down the park and basically relegating us to the hotel room, where I mostly plopped in front of MTV, which I did not have at home. I knew that New Kids on the Block was absolutely not for me, that much was certain; "Hangin' Tough" was in circulation. But at the same time, I remember seeing the "Potholes in my Lawn" video a few times, and feeling like I wasn't quite ready for that, either. I think I was in middle school classic rock mode. Obviously I caught up to De La Soul, big time.

xpost Feel like The Grind Date was fairly acclaimed at the time, seen as a return to form after the AOI records. It was #31 on the pitchfork EOY list. It also came out right before the sea change in rap coverage in rock/indie/mainstream critical outlets, so that probably influences reputation/legacy.

intheblanks, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 18:26 (nine years ago) link

Like in 2004 the top rap albums on Pitchfork's EOY were The Streets, Madvillain, Ghostface, Dizzee Rascal, Kanye, and De La Soul. And in 2005 they were Kanye, Cam'ron, Clipse, Beanie Siegel, The Game, Young Jeezy.

As our September delivery date has long come and gone, we'd like to address the delay, the plan moving forward and the expected release date of our album.
Releasing a record independently has been a real undertaking. In addition to artistic satisfaction, the administrative and executive end had to feel right as well. Side artist clearances and appropriating the best distribution for this project has been just as important. With negotiations complete, we are now working on the plan for our awaited release. Thank you all for your patience.
In late December we'll hit you with a treat and release a song entitled "Train Wreck" followed by our first single "Pain" feat. Snoop Dogg, slated for February/March. Album release date is April 29th.
We'll be sure to keep you posted on our progress.
Thanks folks.
Anonymously,
Us.

Eh, it's been a decade; what's another five or six months.

Evan R, Friday, 20 November 2015 17:00 (eight years ago) link

i guess. i just mean to say that nothing crowdfunded comes out on time ever and it would be smarter to buy a finished product if that is your end goal and/or send a check directly.

i made a scope for my laser musket out of some (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 November 2015 17:05 (eight years ago) link

nothing crowdfunded comes out on time ever

a) this is obviously wildly untrue

b) one would have expected that an entire De La Soul album would run into delays, especially when the funding was so successful that it suggested getting decent distribution would be worthwhile, not just shipping to backers.

glandular lansbury (sic), Friday, 20 November 2015 19:47 (eight years ago) link

a) it's proven by science

b) one would have expected that an album intended to release in 2015 might release in 2015 when that was the stated intention of the artist

i made a scope for my laser musket out of some (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 November 2015 19:53 (eight years ago) link

can't believe an artist's stated intention for their album release has changed plans for the first time ever!

(they ought to have informed folks ahead of September, definitely.)

(first thing I ever crowdfunded was a lavish hardcover comic that was meant to be exclusive to Kickstarter, but ended up being solicited through Diamond and subsequently available in comic shops something like 6-8 months before mine shipped. I still haven't finished reading it 5 years later bcz of disillusionment. but I've no beef on anything else I've kickstarted or pozibled or w/e)

glandular lansbury (sic), Friday, 20 November 2015 21:02 (eight years ago) link

yeah nothing wrong with delaying a release date if they wanna make things better but not keeping the people who already paid money for it informed is kinda lame

banned on ixlor (Jon not Jon), Friday, 20 November 2015 21:42 (eight years ago) link

i saw the zulli was out on the fanta blog but didn't even know it had started as a crowdfund piece!

all facetiousness aside, approaching crowdfunding as a consumer sport is a bad idea; the only reason to go that way is if you want to unconditionally support the artist. to that extent, i'm happy getting whatever de la makes whenever they make it but (from the buyer's end) there's something to be said to having to obey the constraints of a demanding market. It's not like losing the fetters improved, say, prince's output

The title "For Your Pain & Suffering" seems pretty sarcastic after listening to the music, though I mostly enjoyed it. Wasn't their new album supposed to be called "You're Welcome" at one point?

xxp yeah I listened to it again with different expectations and didn't hate it as much. I'm still interested in catching up Pos & Dave after all these and hearing what they have to say, but these accompaniments are so low energy, and the guests are so shoehorned in, and the whole thing feels like it's pandering to toothless AAA stations that consider 70 soul revival acts hip and edgy. It's just such an old man record I can't quite get over it.

it's so old man i really tried to get into it . like even the metaphors in the raps are some super outdated references it's embarrassing .

My enthusiasm's waning. I like the sound, but I wanted the songs to be as alive as that sleeve. The Justin Hawkins track is awful, the most turgid thing they've ever recorded, the Byrne song is almost as terrible, and the Estelle and Little Dragon appearances are eh. I still love "Greyhounds," "Royals," Here in After," and "Pain."

possibly why the band gave their albums away digitally a few years ago.

mark e, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 16:25 (five years ago) link

oh that's definitely why they did it

I'm just struggling to think of another act that released such hugely influential and popular records, that subsequently had their work disappear from circulation for extended periods of time for legal reasons.

I don't think so, it has to do with who filed lawsuits against who. That the Beatles didn't sue might have something to do with the fact that the Beasties were on Capitol... De La happened to get sued by a couple people that were incredibly aggressive legally (ie, the Turtles and Armen Boladian)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 16:45 (five years ago) link

So many shitty things about music can be blamed on the Turtles.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 16:47 (five years ago) link

eh good outweighs the bad imo

I've never cared for Zappa. the Turtles records + T. Rex + their backing vocals on all sorts of stuff (the Psychedelic Furs!) make them forever classic imo

▫◌▫ (sic), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 22:45 (five years ago) link

right, but I would guess that Tommy Boy didn't re-issue or license them to others for re-issue because of the legal settlements (having to pay Armen Boladian $0.01 on every copy sold or whatever it was)

guardians of the gums: i am tooth (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 23:25 (five years ago) link

I think Warner still held the catalogue actually! and while they could afford to pay a weird publishing split and an onerous mechanical here and there, once Tom himself was gone, there was no longer a perceived A&R value to making a lower amount on any one sale because the artist was out there promoting the overall oeuvre

Did and maybe do still love these guys but after revisiting their old albums, have concluded that they have quite boring voices. In a way that's their legacy, making it ok to be a rapper with a boring voice.

candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 15:46 (three years ago) link

They def had some late career highlights, grind date being the one yet sticks out, but I think what prince Paul did was balance out the boring voices with a lot of colourful distractions so you forgot that.

na (NA), Monday, 15 February 2021 15:52 (three years ago) link

these are opinions, all right

You can see their post Paul career as a way of fully embracing the regular guy shtick their voices previously only suggested. Eg - trying people. The humour also became less zany and quirky and more regular. In fairness, the first serve album did try to address the decline in clever humour a little bit.

Yeah, Art Official Intelligence: Bionix was surprisingly good - Mosaic Thump didn't feel like much past a few good singles, so I wasn't sure if they had it in them to make an album like that. The first three, Stakes Is High and Bionix are all excellent-to-great.

i thought mosaic thump was disappointing at the time. it's okay, i guess. bionix was a clear and obvious return to form.

even though it was an obvious attempt to get on the radio, i liked "shoomp" a lot:

shame they didn't end up including it on the grind date. i thought it continued the feel good vibe of bionix perfectly.

The thing is, buhloone is musically much more of a cynical or at least deflated record than the earlier two, even DLSID. Doesnt take a PhD in hip hop to see that.

candyman, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 12:44 (three years ago) link

well, "boring" is a pejorative and "low key" isn't. they mean two different things.

as far as the "pile on". i think i tried to engage with you earnestly on the "limitations of hip hop" thread until it was clear you didn't actually want a discussion about it. frankly, everyone here has been on the internet a long ass time and the way you post in a sort of professorial, condescending tone about black artists (here, limitations of hip hop, the prince thread) and how they lack in your eyes, puts up a lot of people's antennas here as signals of being ways of saying racially problematic things in code, let's say. you also don't really regard anyone else's opinion on hip hop or anything else, that's pretty clear.

also it is a community, so if you don't have a long history of posting and people understanding where you're coming from, you're not going to get as much benefit of the doubt.

"you post in a sort of professorial, condescending tone about black artists (here, limitations of hip hop, the prince thread) and how they lack in your eyes, puts up a lot of people's antennas here as signals of being ways of saying racially problematic things in code"

im fine with being thought of as being condescending towards hip hop, i have a love hate relationship with it. i can accept that. condescending towards all black artists? thats kind of weird. its prob more that the musicians i love are mostly black artists, and i am a critical person. i mean, i posted in the 'is jack white indefensible' thread here and made comments that are hardly full of adulation about his solo material.

actually, one thing that does bother me about your post is this specious idea of 'racially problematic things in code'. you are aware that there are many schools of thought within black music, that liking black music does not mean you have to like it *all*, arent you? that you can quite literally have a branford and a wynton in the same family? maybe think about that before you throw around ding-ding allegations.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 10 August 2021 20:11 (two years ago) link

Not a grandfather clause - it comes down to whether or not the language of the original license covered future technology or changes in the way music is eventually distributed. It's crazy, you're basically anticipating things you can't envision so you have to draft language that's broad enough to cover it (but not so broad that the licensor will balk at the agreement).

Saw these live on a UK tour in... 2018.. I think. midweek night, missing one person from the lineup (didn't even bother to check who it was, I'm a big fan, lol). Really naff gig, bad soundsystem didn't help. 50% of said gig was a random hype man shouting crass party hype stuff, making the audience crouch down and jump up to song cues while the rest of the band just chilled on stage. Felt like the we got the midweek in the boonies/'these rednecks will dance to a leaking tap' show. I was even more annoyed to find for same price tickets in London, a few days later, the whole lineup played with a full backing band, including brass.

I saw them at the Rooftop at Pier 17 in NYC in July 2019, and they were AWESOME. They were definitely having fun, and surprisingly energetic given how much older they are now. Anyway, they were probably in the right mood - they were in their hometown, I vaguely recall allusions to their struggles with Tommy Boy (like the PiL song goes, "anger is an energy"), and all the bullshit happening in the country was heavy on their minds, with Pos kneeling and leading the group in prayer at one point, basically asking for the strength to navigate these times without succumbing to hate. Speaking as an agnostic, even I was pretty moved by that.

Years ago on Sound Opinions, around the early '00s when it was still on WXRT, Jim DeRogatis reminisced about getting an advance copy (I *think* a cassette) of De La Soul Is Dead for review, and because there were major concerns of piracy, they threw in something like a braying donkey that would be randomly heard every now and then. He no longer had it but he said it actually added to the surreal nature of the album. (He brought this up because he wanted to talk about "Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa" for what was probably a Christmas-related show.

I've never been able to find any mention of this anywhere since then, much less an actual copy. Anyone know what DeRogatis was talking about?

I played the cassette to death so those extra songs on the CD always seem superfluous to me. I interviewed them once and Maseo told me the cassette followed the vinyl version tracklist, and the vinyl had fewer songs so they could fit without sounding worse. I too thought Basehead was on the tape but I'm struggling to find my tape or an accurate tracklist of it online (on discogs even). I know Johnny's Dead, Kicked out the house and Who Do You Worship were among the CD only tracks

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 19:38 (one year ago) link

I was curious about the negative reviews - here are two FWIW:

Bill Wyman in the Chicago Reader for Buhloone Mindstate (which placed at #8 for that year's Pazz & Jop poll)
https://chicagoreader.com/arts-culture/de-la-soul-a-tribe-called-quest/

"It’s another exposition of pulverized pop, but with side trips into drones, weird jazz, and other sorts of less-than-compelling sonic dreamscapes. It also contains a lyrical universe that’s beyond this willing listener’s ken, which is a nice way of saying I haven’t the faintest idea what the fuck they’re talking about."

And in Trouser Press's guide, written by David Sheridan and/or Steven Mirkin:

https://trouserpress.com/reviews/de-la-soul/

On De La Soul Is Dead, as on the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique, the band’s ambition outstrips its ideas. The feeble, forced skits that dot the album fall flat, and many of the songs can be heard as a reaction to criticism that De La Soul was soft. Unlike “Do as De La Does” (from 3 Feet High and Rising), where the group puts itself in a leadership position, songs like “Afro Connections at a Hi 5 (In the Eyes of the Hoodlum)” and “Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa” hew closer to rap convention, with harder-edged lyrics and sound. The album’s not bad, but it lacks some of the qualities that made the debut unique.

Superficially, Buhlööne Mind State is a return to form. While it does resemble the first album, there’s a pro forma air to the proceedings that even guests like Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker can’t allay; the sound is in the house, but the trio’s once-profound inspiration has fled.

two things are true in this case

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 19 January 2023 16:28 (one year ago) link

As someone who worked in clearance (albeit not in music) I can say that one of the major hangups for a lot of late 80s/early 90s agreements was how understandably there was no anticipation of the possibility of digital and online usage, and how some documents didn’t include the all-encompassing part where they cited any and all future media usage as being covered.

I had to license a song for a video my school produced for a faculty member - my first exposure to licensing - and the guy I dealt with was nice enough to walk me through it. IIRC he said you typically want "all world" (every territory and country) and most importantly "all media" and I think that became the standard term in the digital age in anticipation of downloads, streaming and everything else.

birdistheword, Thursday, 19 January 2023 17:26 (one year ago) link

I think you actually want something like "all media, whether now known or hereafter devised"...

Vexatious litigant (morrisp), Thursday, 19 January 2023 17:33 (one year ago) link

Just listened on youtube, and yep, no one asks if anyone in the audience ever got hit by a car. I don't know the intricacies of sample clearance -- specifically, why some artists are easier to clear than others -- but it's a little surprising that they were able to clear Zeppelin but not Eddie Murphy. And if this missing bit is representative of the rest of the album, I assume "Cool Breeze On The Rocks" will sound a LOT different.

two things are true in this case

I believe it was a late '90s Mojo piece about this album where I read that Tommy Boy had repeatedly assured the band and Prince Paul (who kept meticulous notes on the samples) that all the samples were cleared. Some were -- I think Hall & Oates and a handful of others -- but most weren't. So they were blindsided by the Turtles lawsuit.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 19 January 2023 17:37 (one year ago) link

oh yeah I remember reading that - in general I've never heard anything good about Tommy Boy

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 19 January 2023 17:43 (one year ago) link

It can be ridiculous. There was some show Carol Burnett was in where she needed to clear a Stephen Sondheim song, and she (and Sondheim) thought it would be easy because they were good friends. However it was something Sondheim co-wrote with a now deceased person, and when Sondheim contacted the publisher, they apparently just said "you only own half the rights, we need to talk to the estate of the other writer" etc. Forgot what happened afterwards but long story short, the more approvals you need, the more it sucks.

There was an article on Dylan licensing his music to films (before he sold his catalog) and it was easy - Dylan gets the proposal and either he likes it or doesn't, and he wouldn't price the license out of the film's budget which is why some films with less-than-huge budgets got to use Dylan songs. He was the only guy who had to sign off.

I always heard it as "shang a lang" but I never heard the original source until moments ago despite it being sampled to death.

In the video it says "a tri-camaro system is now set", which is kind of amazing, but it made me realize that I don't know what the actual original lyric is. All the online lyrics sites have something like "A tri-camera rolls since our music's now set" listed, but for the last 34 years I thought they were saying "a tricameral system", like three governing bodies.

Re: birdistheword

I thought licensing songs to films was primarily under the purview of most artists themselves and not their publishers. The Beastie Boys were infamous for being very particular about what films they allowed to utilize their songs. David Bowie wanted very large sums of money. He was probably one of the first artists to ask for six figures or more. Kate Bush, conversely, let Keith Gordon use “Running Up That Hill” for $1500 or so for The Chocolate War (1988), and it’s amazingly remained there on every home video release

beamish13, Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:48 (one year ago) link

I thought licensing songs to films was primarily under the purview of most artists themselves and not their publishers.

I think it depends on a few things including, but not limited to, the relationship of the artist to their publisher, and whether or not the artist actually owns and controls their own publishing, and who controls the masters.

In 2011 a TV show wanted to use "Who Are You," but Universal wanted $150,000 -- totaling $300,000, because the same amount has to be paid to both the artist (for the song publishing) and Universal (for rights to the master). But if the show's producers went to Townshend directly, whatever price Townshend set determined the cost. In this instance, Pete watched some episodes of the show, read a synopsis of the episode, and said "How about $7500?" So the show got "Who Are You" for $15,000 which is apparently dirt cheap.

And based on Joe Pera Reads The Church Announcements, I assume a similar deal was struck between that show's producers and Townshend/Universal, because I doubt Joe Pera had a budget approaching six figures for an entire season.

He has this great chill vibe in their videos. Like he's having a good time but also thinks it's a little funny that he's making music videos.

Ok, I will.

Was at Reading Festival, and DeLa were on, ahead of James, Carter USM and TheFall. Anyway, Carter were massive this weekend, and the crowd was full of JimBob/JohnBeast types, and everyone up to then was getting the "You Fat Bastard" treatment.

Anyway, it kicks in after three songs with DelaSoul. Trugoy is all "wait what, stop stop.. You Fat what?...."
Of course, crowd goes nuts and yells back louder.
Trugoy: "Oh yeah? Well, you can ALL! KISS! My BIG! BLACK! ASS!!"

Big cheer from crowd, rest of the set continues to be rapturously received, and I dunno someone buys him breakfast probably...

In recent years, Jolicoeur, had said he was battling congestive heart failure, living with a LifeVest machine affixed to his person.

Diagnosed 2017. They played a bunch of shows in England last year and had 4 booked for April. Were some/all of them living over there? This must have happened sort of quickly? RIP.

What do Pos and Mase do now? Is it all over for them? It is, right?

They were booked to play the Royal Albert Hall in London in April.

I think a preferred Tribe but I loved DLS more, if that makes sense. Maybe I didn't prefer Tribe. Buhloone is one of my favourite albums of all time.

I love Tribe but De La Soul is definitely the more important of the two

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 13 February 2023 17:37 (one year ago) link

Tribe have those elements of volatility and tension / genius that make a better narrative but I can get lost in the soup of De La Soul so much more. So much stirred into the lyrics, always underrated, as well as the sound.

When I was a student trying to teach Italian teens English at a summer school, I played them Say No Go once in a lesson on drugs thinking it'd be a new way to look at the theme. I only properly realised when I had the words up on the board looking at their blank faces, the impossible magnificent density of the language, how the fuck was I going to explain? Um drugs are like pleather mumble mumble moving on.

I hope it's not the end / the concerts could be made some kind of tribute, but that's in vain really. They seemed like a group who really liked each other. Dotting between here and the Yo La Tengo thread I see something similar, a career where being around forever and enjoying each other's company feels like part of the point. Quiet confidence, music as way of life rather than explosion, even if it doesn't make a great story for a doc or a warts and all retrospective. "The business of De La is our friendship," Mase said in an interview I read.

So as everybody has said this feels very cruel now they're about to get their comeback-equivalent hoopla and fuss. At least Dave will have got to see the excitement for the reissues if not the fruits of it.

Can't wait to have a proper copy of Buhloone Mindstate to submerge in when it comes. His verse on Area is my fave, just pure confidence and flute. Life really. RIP.

really going to miss the sound of his voice. the timing is so cruel. i hope for a communal moment when the world can celebrate his music next month.

easily on the level of losing Phife and MCA (and similar in some sense as far as the alchemy of the unit), but an even deeper hit for me personally.

I discovered De La via skate videos at age 11 or 12 somewhat out of order, first with I Be Blowin', then The Bizness and then Saturdays. Midnight Marauders was in heavy rotation too (goated for the Award Tour chorus). those albums cracked a new path wide open, as they did for many others.

Stakes is High is my most prized, but the discography is remarkably consistent. loads of great stuff on the later albums. a few rarer and under appreciated favorites:

xpost to ansa: "trouble in the water" with dj honda! stakes is high was a lot more "SERIOUSGUYFACE", especially for them, but that song really solidified that they were getting downright introspective and poetic in their old age. dave has a line in his first verse that has been stuck in my head on and off since about 1999—

de la def always overtly stood apart from a lot of rap stuff "black medallions no gold" but stakes is high is really an album about that where it was previously just one thread

i did recently listen to stakes is high for the first time in a long time, an album i bought the day it came out and enjoyed a lot, tho i never ranked it with their previous two, and while the complaining about the state of rap/the world is def tough to take the nice guy swag vibe is much worse just brutally self conscious and conflicted, common and mos def are not out of place here

they were always cool freaks doing their own thing but on stakes they want to be taken seriously for rap earned credit or something idk, not that it has nothing to recommend it but theres just a lot of jarring stuff on there, also no prince paul, he went way further into left field after the split

yeah I downloaded it (lol) last week after misplacing a DVD copy; the attempts at crowdpleasing mixed with the mild complaints about the bizness + the okay beats don't result in a great album. I'm comfortable ranking it behind the AOI albums and The Grind Date. "Supa Emcees," "Pony Ride" ""Big Brother Beat," and "4 More" are my keepers.

in hindsight it makes 98% of the "backpacker shit" it inspired look like motionlessly masturbatory nonsense. de la had a radio jam in "4 more" on their album though. so they win.

going back to everything recently it just strikes me how pleasantly out of step they always were. the classic line is "arsenio dissed us but the crowd kept clappin" and that so perfectly sums it up.

To be able to do a whole concept/rap opera thing and have the plot make sense, the superb "casting" (like Everlast as a dirty cop was inspired, and obviously all the others like BDK, Kool Keith, De La, etc) and then to center it on two relatively unknown rappers who are great in the lead roles, a real great piece of work. great beats too.

Confirmation about the replays:

So here's a question about replays: if they couldn't clear, say, a James Brown sample, studio musicians can re-create/re-record that. But why can't someone go into the studio and, doing an Eddie Murphy impression, say, "Anybody in the audience ever get hit by car?"

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 23 February 2023 17:37 (one year ago) link

Today, De La Soul announced The DA.I.S.Y. Experience at Webster Hall in New York City on March 2. This immersive activation honors the life and legacy of the late David “Trugoy The Dove” Jolicoeur, and the influence and impact of pioneering New York hip-hop trio De La Soul, which he co-founded with fellow members Kelvin “Posdnuos” Mercer and Vincent Lamont “Maseo” Mason Jr.

“The DA.I.S.Y. Experience”—named for the group’s song “D.A.I.S.Y. Age” off 3 Feet High and Rising, and standing for “Da Inner Sound Y’all”—will morph Webster Hall into the ultimate celebration of De La Soul on the eve of the group’s music arriving on streaming services March 3. Produced in conjunction with Amazon Music, the event will unite family, friends, and fans for a celebration of Dave and De La Soul. The venue will be transformed with artwork from the group’s classic album, 3 Feet High and Rising.

The Originals (Stretch Armstrong, Clark Kent, Rich Medina, and Tony Touch) will curate a DJ set dedicated to the De La Soul’s legacy. Fans can watch the set on Maseo’s Twitch Channel starting at 8 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, Posdnuos and Maseo, along with other VIPs, will be on hand at the event to celebrate their brother Dave. Fans can RSVP to the free event here: thedaisyexperience.com.

The Amazon Music channel on Twitch will livestream a series of interviews with friends of De La Soul and special guests, hosted by Rob Markman and Free Marie, starting at 10:30 p.m. EST.

Will the physical reissues of your albums be exactly the same as the originals, or did you need to redo some of the samples? johnnymoseley
Posdnuos: A lot of work went into getting hold of the masters and remastering, but everything will sound as tight and beautiful as you remember.
Maseo: It was frustrating that our first six albums weren’t on Spotify [owing to record company disputes]. It felt like we were being erased from history. Newer fans would ask: “Where’s your older stuff?” Now, they’ll be able to get it.

Well this makes it sound like these reissues will be shit shows featuring garbage relays of the original samples. I’ll wait and see but I’m the answer to this direct question is troubling.

In light of that Deborah Mannis-Gardner interview I posted upthread, it's probably a good idea to buy a physical copy of any other hip-hop album you'd want prior to the mid-'90s. It just sounds like there's a ton of albums out there that are extremely vulnerable to litigious rights holders, including some that I would count among my very favorites.

(I'm happy you like it just fine.) (I don't.)

It's taken them this long to reissue them as they'll be coming out, and they had to jump countless hurdles and jump through endless hoops to get there. If you want a copy of the original, they are plenty of them out there. These reissues are as good as they can manage them at this moment in time.

Yeah, "Magic Number" was on the radio, and I tried listening out for the replayed and/or changed things. Then "has anybody in the audience" popped up and I realised that radio stations still have the originals in their database, and I doubt they'll be updating them anytime soon.

Camper Van Beethoven rerecorded a bunch of songs for a greatest hits collection.

I think the Violent Femmes did this for Blister In The Sun on some soundtrack album.

Prince threatened to do it but as far as I know never got around to it.

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 12:55 (one year ago) link

I think this will be much different than Def Leppard re-recording "Rock of Ages" or whatever. Thinking it'll sound more like the Chic "sample" in "Rappers Delight".

pplains, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 14:46 (one year ago) link

They aren't touching the original vocals I assume, so it's a bit like a remix that's trying to sound as close to the original as possible

INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Tuesday, 28 February 2023 14:54 (one year ago) link

I was curious about this (and avoiding some work this morning) so did a quick a/b of what's on Spotify to the original CD.

The only other change besides Eddie Murphy I heard in The Magic Number was the "do the shang-a-lang" sample is at a lower pitch than the original. Maybe they used a harmonizer or something on the original and didn't on this, but it sounded like the same source (not a replay) just pitched differently. I can't hear anything else on that or Eye Know, but curious about the rest of the albums.

city worker, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 15:40 (one year ago) link

What does a “sample redo” mean in this context? Might they be replacing the samples with different but similar samples where the rights can be secured? Or recording “covers” of the sampled performances. Or resampling the original snippets but this time with the rights pre-cleared?

Pierre Menard, author of 3 Feet High and Rising.

bendy, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 16:33 (one year ago) link

i'm concerned that even if the sample replacements sound the same, just knowing that they replaced them is going to make it psychologically difficult for me to enjoy the reissues

INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Tuesday, 28 February 2023 16:36 (one year ago) link

By dint of replacing or cutting samples, the songs will have been mixed again from the ground up (probably no automation/recall in those days, or if there was, and by some miracle they still had the floppy disks, it'd be specific to whatever desk they originally used) The Magic Number sounds louder now because it is a modern remix and master, although you can hear that they've referenced the original, all the grain in the vocal tracks is still there, I think the panning is different in places though.

listening to buhloone mind state (original vers no streaming baby) one cool thing about this album is while theyre at the height of their dense abstract lyricism even when you cant literally understand what theyre talking about when you dont catch all the references it still feels like it make sense it never comes off as cryptic its still engaging, to me at least :)

With a track like TMN that is so ingrained in my memory, not hearing the Eddie sample is weird, but not a dealbreaker, but if the Syl Johnson sample was missing it'd somehow greatly affect my enjoyment of it.

But it's either this or the albums essentially don't exist, streaming. It took them this long to get to this point, and as mentioned above it seemingly takes a close side-by-side listen to notice the joins.

From everything I've read they spent literal years clearing samples, and there are a very few that they were unable to clear so they've either recorded the closest possible facsimile performances (which, given modern technology, is not actually that difficult) or omitted them. Anything where the whole song stands or falls on a sample they were unable to clear, they're obviously gonna have worked as hard as possible to re-create it.

(I'd love it if, instead of trying to re-create the sample on "Transmitting Live From Mars," they just chanted "Fuck the Turtles" for a minute and a half over a drum loop, but that's just me.)

OTM. Sample re-plays are pretty interesting to do, but obviously it's easier to do with a track that hasn't come out yet compared to one where so many people are familiar with the texture of a sample, the pitch of the reverb, etc.

slight derail but basically an attempt to move the streaming units to something that would pay for retirement funds, nice little rs story https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/teenage-dirtbag-wheatus-interview-brendan-brown-974332/

somewhat relevant to thread is the phone sample anecdote:

As beloved as “Teenage Dirtbag” is, it’s hard to imagine that any listener has spent too much time obsessing over the glitchy, three-note, synth-like sound that briefly shows up in the first chorus, right after the “she rings my bell” line. Still, last September, Brown attempted to crowdsource its origin, offering an engineering credit for anyone who could track it down. He was unsuccessful, and ended up having to attempt to reproduce the sound on his own.

“It turned out to be so much more complicated than we could have imagined,” Brown says, before explaining the process at length.

“We spent nine days transposing and moving harmonies around, moving the sound to different harmonies so that it sounded like the original, because we don’t know what the original sound was. It was just a phone thing sampled from somewhere,” he says. “It took us nine days until two o’clock in the morning. We were freaking out, like, ‘What the fuck? How do we do it?’ Anyway, we got there, but the process was like, ‘You gotta be fucking kidding me.’ We had to do all this research on DTMF, the Bell telephone system, to figure out what the notes corresponded to. … The sound happens again in the third verse, and they’re actually different harmonies. We got the first verse right, and the third verse wrong, so we had to start the transposing process all over again. That was another three days.”

I like this, about the Dilla beat for Stakes is High:

Tip is playing this new beat for Pos from Dilla and based on the history that those two have, anytime Pos gave a head nod to some shit, Q-Tip ended up keeping the beat and try to make something out of it, so he tried to use reverse psychology on this particular one. “Stakes is High” came up on the beat, Pos kind of held back. He was like, “What do you think of this beat?” “Stakes Is High” beat playing and Pos was like, “It’s all right. It’s OK” but then secretly goes off in the corner and calls Dave was like, Yo! This is the fucking beat. This is it right here. I’ve got to figure out how to get it but this is it. Then went from that point on. Pos reaching out to Dilla separately.

very sweet email from the band:

Dear Dave,

You were the heart of our group. You brought so much creativity, energy, and passion to our music, and your influence will be felt for years to come.

Your passing is a great loss not only to us, but also to the entire hip-hop community. You were a true artist who used music to inspire and uplift others, and you will be deeply missed by all who knew you.

This is heavy on our hearts and minds but we are smiling and even laughing at all the great times we shared with you. As we attempt to navigate this world without you, we stand grateful and proud of all you accomplished on this earth.

We would like to say thank you Dave for being a big brother. Thank you for being a friend. Thank you for the wise words placed in your verses. Thank you for the music you produced that is loved by so many. Thank you for never wanting to compromise the quality of our brand. Thank you for helping us become a group that will remain etched in the timeline of hip hop culture as well as the fabric of music and for now on when we perform “Ring Ring Ring Ha Ha Hey” we will say “2-2-2-2-222 we got an angel in heaven who can talk to you”.

We love you Dave and thank you Dave!

Everyone, please celebrate the life and legacy of Dave Jolicoeur, Trugoy the Dove, Plug 2, Dave.

this suggests they'll keep on performing post-Trugoy. Which I think is a good thing, but not entirely what I expected.

beamish13, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:13 (one year ago) link

Been slowly catching up on these albums after not listening to them for years…

3 Feet retains all its charm, such a fresh sound for its moment and I was reminded all over again how many acts in the 90s were biting this. The skits though. I don’t exactly mind them but they always kept me from coming back to this as often as it probably deserved.

De La Soul is Dead I actually find pretty tedious. The ratio of filler to fully form tracks is way off, it’s just not focused at all.

And then we get to Buhloone which I’m listening to now for the first time since probably 2000?? My god what a leap forward this is. It’s just absolutely flawless.

Back in the day of choosing what to spend your $15 on, I never picked up Stakes is High nor anything after that so I’m excited to dig into that next.

I wouldn't judge Is Dead that harshly but this definitely confirmed to me that Buhloone is their best album, and I agree that 3 Ft > Dead.

This performance-disk version, which omits 15–20 minutes of skits and japes, brings ...Is Dead into focus. It really is probably their best, it's just somewhat destructively intermingled w/ a Prince Paul comedy record https://www.discogs.com/release/210087-De-La-Soul-De-La-Soul-Is-Dead

I remembered the album version of « Ring Ring » was different from the single but I didn’t remember ir was THAT different, without the sax etc. It was their biggest hit, wasn’t it ? In France, by far anyway.

What, to stop broadcast/bootlegging?

Mark G, Saturday, 11 March 2023 07:54 (one year ago) link

Yeah! It was a big deal at the time, iirc. Just every several second/minutes there would be a big, loud donkey bray.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 11 March 2023 14:59 (one year ago) link

https://ew.com/article/1993/09/10/latest-war-bootlegging/

Music critics who received advance copies of De La Soul’s latest, Buhloone Mind State (Sept. 21 release), were treated to 13 new songs whose principal accompanist was a braying donkey. Another one of the hip-hoppers’ musical innovations? Nope, just the latest weapon in the war against bootlegging and the bigger problem of review tapes leaking out. ”With these noises, someone would be deterred from leaking it to radio stations, or actually enjoying it,” says De La Soul front man Posdnuos. ”This way, if you have one of these tapes, you would still have to go out and buy the CD when it came out in the stores. And if I hear bootleg copies on the street, I can tell where it came from.” It remains to be seen how successful a deterrent the donkey sound will be; some reviewers have told Posdnuos that the intermittent, high-pitched braying kind of grows on you.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 11 March 2023 15:00 (one year ago) link

Watching old MTV Raps episodes on Paramount Plus, De La is on playing Super Nintendo and talking to Fab 5, anyway he asked them their biggest influences and they all said Ultramagnetic MCs.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 11 March 2023 15:26 (one year ago) link

The tracklist from that promo LP version of the second album is a lot clearer and a more lucid statement. Since their songs are already built upon digression, adding more digressions in-between the songs is overkill, especially once you've read the comic strip in the liner notes and understand the general attitude behind the album.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 11 March 2023 16:04 (one year ago) link

ahh it was buhloone not dead that had the animal noises on it. one of those things i had only ever heard about, not actually heard.

also i think it's important to remember the format and media of the time: no internet, 900 numbers, jerky boys hadn't even come around yet, and most people didn't even have cable at that point. even with music there was an expectation of one-liners, "outrageous" and "wacky" situations... cheap entertainment basically! my point in bringing this up is: in 1991 it was still very much acceptable to thematically create an album the same way you would a movie. they certainly weren't the first music act to do it, but there is a sense of sarcasm and embellishment (especially on the second album) that is 100% theirs. it's one of the reasons i revere that album so much: it's like hiphop vaudeville.

I wonder if Greg Kott didn’t get it:

‘While renouncing the conventional topics of hard-core hip-hop (guns, ho's, inner-city pathology masquerading as manhood), it flirts with cultural and musical criticism on such cuts as "Ego Trippin' (Part Two)" and "I Am I Be." The braying of a donkey and the mantra "It might blow up but it won't go pop" also provide an oblique, running commentary on the hip-hop nation.’

The big rediscovery for me from all of this has been Buhloone Mindstate, which I liked at the time but it was never a big part of my listening the way the first two were — they were very much a college band for me, the first two albums came out while I was in school, so by the time of the third one I was off listening to a bunch of other stuff, De La Soul weren't "the future" anymore. BUT. Wow that's a great album. Maybe their best! I was surprised by how much of it I remembered even knowing that I'd never listened to it much. So anyway, I know I'm 30 years late on that, but it has been a real pleasure to dig back into.

It's the best kind of "mature" record - full of complexity and emotional depth, while the shift from dayglo sampledelia to more muted jazz shades (not to mention Maceo Parker's interludes) complements the shift in text. Complicated, not hard.
