knife track i did this with was neverland iirc

not the greatest on that album by a long shot but very insistent

tldr swinton (nakhchivan), Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:40 (thirteen years ago) link

ohhh have done this with fever ray - i'm not done (easily best track on the album)

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:40 (thirteen years ago) link

i have never done this -- pretty sure hearing any song more than twice in the space of an hour would make me start to hate it

ok maybe 'seven' is just as good but IND is a place I like to be xp

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I once downloaded the incidental music from ABC World News Tonight in 1978, and listened to that for hours. The song is only a minute long, too. It kind of reminded me of Goblin, but more exciting!

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:43 (thirteen years ago) link

these tracks either seem to have insistent/thudding/motorik/etc recurring motifs or just a key change/chorus/half-second of sublimity

This got a lot of repeat play, too, when I found it for download. "Heavy Action" aka the Monday Night Football theme. ABC is good with the thrilling instrumental themes!

This is also a JAM – I found a clip of a girls' school orchestra playing it once:

The first time I heard Madrugada Eterna (the first time I heard anything off Chill-Out), I listened to it like 8 times in a row (and it's an 8+ minute song)

Polmo Polpo's Kiss Me Again and Again, I listened to for like an hour and a half when I first heard it. It's absolutely brilliant.

EDB, Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:48 (thirteen years ago) link

just a key change/chorus/half-second of sublimity

def

all the trax I mentioned have moments - timbres, melodies or shifts - that tend towards the indescribable - maybe if they're ever fully worked-out they'll lose their magic

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually, I got the madrugada Eterna stats wrong, It's 6 minutes, but I think I listened to it 13 or so times.

EDB, Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I alternated the slow version of "Hello It's Me" by the Nazz and the faster Something/Anything? version by Rundgren solo for a couple of hours once this year.

pretty sure hearing any song more than twice in the space of an hour would make me start to hate it

loved both versions more and more as they played on -- the only reason I stopped was I had to leave the house for an appointment.

That's Susumu Hirasawa isn't it? He's made a bunch of music like that. One of the best composers working today, and that's not even counting his soundtrack stuff. His solo albums in general are incredible.

Today I played "Wondaland" by Janelle Monae like 7 times in a row. It's just a neat pop song that kind of defies a normal description. Really catchy and pretty sexy as well.

I'm now remembering several occasions where I have played a single album over and over. Could have been something in the ambient vein like the Aphex track, but was likely something from Brian Eno's "incidental" works. By playing them for many hours I guess I was trying to approximate their artistic intent. Will I ever live in a future that actually sounds like the future?

...and when did Aphex get around to putting names to those "Selected Ambient Works"? I always thought they were codified by those funky symbols.

sonic youth - rain on tin

funny thing is, first time i listened to this i had the whole commentary in my head of sonic youth & punk basically reverting back to the principles they were so against... mainly, pointless noodling. which was basically my first reaction to hearing this song - but more you listen to it, you start realizing it actually has intent and likely isn't played any much differently at shows. still, it is a tad ironic that this really is the stand-out track on Murray St (far as I go).

^^^ George Michael's 'Monkey'. When this came out in 1988 I was 14 and made a mix tape to play in my knock-off Argos 'walkman' when I went on a mostly tedious one week summer holiday to Norfolk with my parents - this track was one of the highlights.

Brian Eno's "Through Hollow Lands". Around 1980 I had it taped on one side of a C90 tape as many times as possible. That's only 45 minutes so I am cheating a little here. I listened to it for meditation purposes. Probably I have never come closer to satori ;- That track for me is perfect to clean my brain of those weird things people usually call thoughts.

Van Morrison - Madame George

and most recently

The Pointer Sisters - Automatic

I also once spent a whole week holed up in a cabin while working on my dissertation, listening to nothing but Julia Holter - Ekstasis and Terry Riley’s Lisbon Concert (full albums).

both sides the tweed - dick gaughan

travelling through the north over the tweed into scotland. for some reason this fused with a sense of an immensity of squandered potential across the UK. of industry and political energy, intellectual advancement, education and artistic adventure, pissed down the drain in national fits of nostalgia, rural and landed regression, general small mindedness, conservatism with any sized c you fancy, probably with an unt somewhere at the end of it.

the idealism dick gaughan’s song, while not entirely free of some of the regressive tendencies above, was jibing nicely with alasdair gray’s motto “Work as if you live in the early days of a better nation”.

so i listened to it five or six times in a row into and out of berwick.

Fizzles, Friday, 19 January 2024 17:36 (three months ago) link

perhaps worth noting this song originally came to me in Will Oldham’s Idea and Deed at the end of Joya, where “both sides the Tweed” becomes a more philosophical exhortation to civic unity and achievement.

There is a third, entirely fictitious, version of this song - a figment of some misreading or misprision of mine: Berwickshire Tweed - where the same civic unity and liberty - is created through the industry of the weaving of tweed wool. in berwick. as if it were some sort of material expression of that conversion from personal liberty to civic emancipation, that’s the theme of the song.
