i really like how unnatural he can sound rapping abt the standard signifiers (money/cars/girls/etc.)--like a lot of the songs can be read as these blazed daydreams of some guy chillin in his room in nola.

i love the production on this album (the live instruments are a great touch) but I still don't "get" curren$y completely... he's obviously a goo rapper but his delivery/voice is just soooooooo monotonous and boring. i feel like all of the people who've jacked his style (wayne, wiz, etc.) do "curren$y" better than curren$y does

I think Curren$y's easily the better rapper between him and Wiz, but Wiz's personality is a little more outward while Curren$y's is more insular. Wiz also has a knack for catchy hooks, more so than Curren$y, I think. But they work well together. Just enough overlap in their styles but enough divergence between the two.

I think he sorta lets loose on tracks like "Address" (great track: "MAKING HOT WHEELS OUT OF HOOPTIES!"). And I think he goes in just as hard lyrically, it's just that the flows aren't as speedy. But the beats aren't built for those kind of flows.

yeah obv there's no one way all beats should sound, i'm just saying it sounds like garbage to me, the drums and the synths and everything. sounds like something i'd hear on a local mixtape and run to the skip button on.

for me rap in 2010 is a handful of solid releases from mid-weight dudes (gucci, jeezy, z-ro & friends, ross) and some really promising debuts, and then cool subterranean internet rap nerd shit like lil b & odd future & young l bay slap. as much as i love that yelawolf tape i strongly believe the follow-up will surpass it, and it's going to be really interesting to follow him and like, roach gigz and and krit too. hopefully starlito, too. lots of fun to be had listening but most of my favourite releases are auspices of hope that some 10/10 world-defeating rap music is in the works
last thing i want to do is shit on big boi or currensy, just hope that people cast a bit of a wider net as barometer of rap in 2010. there are like seven enormous jams on sir luscious

Hmmm, I actually feel like it takes a few tracks to really warm up. And that's including "Seat Change," which I agree is a bit weak. After that, though? My favorite three-track sequence on the album is right in the middle: "Roasted" (love the juxtaposition of hungry articulate rapping w/ that super-mellow weed-haze wood flute)->"Skybourne"->"Hangover."
― jaymc, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 22:05 (thirteen years ago) link
"Address" should be the closer, to be honest. Switch the order of that and "Life Under the Scope," which has a kind of dinky beat, and you have a great closer.

anyway anyway i have yet to hear this record -- i dig curren$y in doses & when the production is juuuuuuust right, which i don't think it was that often on pilot talk -- didn't think it was lush enough all the way thru -- either way i like his style tons in theory, usually less in practice over the length of a full album
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 November 2010 23:36 (thirteen years ago) link
to my ears this splits the diff between lush & spare -- my expertise in the genre is at best dated but having said that there's a little bit of old west-coast crawl in this as I hear it, something v. understated & groovy. I listened to the whole album twice today with varying levels of attention & much, much pleasure, texting friends "fuckin A go hear the new curen$y" etc -- it just snapped for me, and I'm pretty out-of-touch rap-wise, listen to anything on stones throw & don't really hear much else so take that fwiw

i think the real problem w/ the first pilot talk was that his rapping on it felt lazy, which was like, all you got out of it was this stoner-persona, the lilt of his vocals, & some nice if mis-matched production from ski. Also, guest stars with Respected Rap Pedigrees like jay electronica & mos def spitting guest verses. Anyone introduced to him through this record would have to feel underwhelmed
I think a problem that ive dealt with w/ curren$y & gucci & other rappers -- and something i tried to hammer home in the last line of my last gucci review -- is that saying 'the mixtapes were better' is not the kind of strategic 'i was down when he was underground' type positioning that it used to be. that 'the mixtapes' now are the catalog, and anyone engaging with rap seriously should know 'the mixtapes.' no one should be 'waiting around for the album.' it just doesnt make sense. these 'mixtapes' are straight-up full albums.
curren$y's mixtapes -- and pilot talk 2 sounds more like them than it does the first pt -- are great because they focused on a specific laid back vibe (which the first pt only occasionally glanced on, inexplicably) that created a sorta blank, relaxed platform for curren$y to spin some really interestingly-constructed lyrics. Like Gucci, his subject matter is fairly narrow; what's interesting is how deftly he weaves each individual word, sculpting verses that fold in on themselves like some kind of rapping origami crane. Its something that just sluices by you at first, but rewards repeat listens, these little intricacies that aren't used to make a 'point,' that aren't functional, they just exist as pieces of art on their own, each one with its own physical shape or something. The interesting parts are how each verse is constructed, theres a real beauty to the way each rhyme interacts on an individual line. its not 'deep,' its just art

are ppl really spending the same amount of money on the mixtapes that they are on the albums? that is the key q that tells you whether the artist takes the mixtapes as seriously as he takes the albums. of course that's auteurism -- you can say, how seriously the artist takes it doesn't matter -- but I'm not persuaded that the inverse of auteurism is as triumphant as its proponents tend to think
― aerosmith: the acid house years (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 25 November 2010 00:43 (thirteen years ago) link

admittedly this is a problem for me and the reason that i can't pay 100% attention to rap--i really don't listen to much music that i can't get a physical release of.
― questeon the answers (call all destroyer), Thursday, 25 November 2010 00:43 (thirteen years ago) link
thing is, with the major label system as fucked as it is, barely releasing any major label rap albums at all, the mixtape circuit is often the ONLY outlet a lot of rappers have to release material until they have an established fanbase that the labels can exploit. unless someone has a breakout hit, it usually takes YEARS for this to happen, and often times by the time a major comes calling, they've already released their best work.

― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, November 24, 2010
no it really isn't - i'm only just realizing that ppl here are "waiting for the album". u shouldn't do that anymore - the game has changed and you really have to consider mixtapes with original beats as as worth checking out as anything else.
― zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:07 (thirteen years ago) link
i don't mean that with regard to "taking rap seriously" - just as a casual listener u shld regard the two types of release as having equal potential reward
― zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link
i know deej is insufferable itt and kvlty elsewhere, but tbf he was bemused that pilot talk was a big deal when "dude went from nu-nas to 'i think wiz is better' over the course of one album :-/" and backed that up with utubes for u guys of what he thought currensy was capable of. pilot talk didn't interest me but what i've heard from pilot talk 2 is back to that niceness.
― zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:15 (thirteen years ago) link
I would have thought that mixtapes have been pretty well absorbed into the casual observer's notion of current rap in 2010. To use the strawman example pitchfork has been writing about mixtapes for ages.
I think these days we're often just a little too quick to be proud of not getting our heads around the logic of how particulars operate as genres (including how they generate product) on the grounds of being anti elitism and gatekeeperism. Those things exist, sure, but in an environment where there is no substantial barrier to getting with the genre on its own terms (because the mixtapes are as practically accessible as the albums) the charge of elitism in that context is pretty hollowed out.

deej, with that charge i was thinking in particular of your insistence that ppl acquire and process - or, preferably, already own - the 213 hours of music that constitutes quik's career rather than download a 1:30 hr tape judiciously sampling it. for me it's a more natural impulse to turn ppl onto stuff rather than imagine myself king of a rare & secret(e) fiefdom so i favor the more accessible option.

these two things are separate -- deej CAN be an unbearable asshole when he posts about rap but he's not always, and after his "i told you so" nonsense itt he posted a long post about why he digs pilot talk 2 -- legit jumping point for discussion & the kinda post that we want/need
i know that not everyone can sit around all day listening to mixtapes like most of the goons, but, like, mixtapes play a much bigger role when it comes to modern rap than albums. it's not even close. there is no gate keeping being done here where you have to show off your currensy or waka mixtapes punch card, but those of us that do listen to those tapes are gonna come in these threads & talk about those tapes, cuz it's always gonna be relevant. this is underground cliquey crap. rap in 2010 = mixtapes, songs only on youtube, songs only on hulkshare etc. it's not an asshole thing.
& deej is right about how he approached dan in the waka thread & john in this thread -- he's more of a dick to goons that aren't paying attention

i personally am kind of an albums guy and am not that big on picking through individual songs on blogs, youtube, etc. but mixtapes really are basically albums now and it's basically as easy to follow which big/good mixtapes are out as w/ official albums now, the whole thing is that it's not this dense inaccessible hardcore fan only scene it used to be.

"The mixtapes were better" is also pretty much a truism now, right?
Like, would it even make sense to consider the careers - even the commercial success - of Lil' Wayne, Gucci Mane, Nikki Minaj (to name three examples that to me seem particularly prominent) based just on their official studio albums?
Okay need to hear this now.

You don't NEED to hear anything, but given the mixtapes you listed there are all widely considered to be better* than their attendant studio albums, the fact that you'd bother to check the studio albums but not the mixtapes seems pretty arbitrary.
Like, I get not automatically checking every mixtape an artist puts out, but when some of them are in effect studio albums which possibly even the artist would admit are better than the album that just happens to get officially pushed by a major label, then disregarding them seems obstinate, the equivalent of thinking that, say, 3d animation is for kids.
* as always, insert caveat for Lil Wayne w/r/t carter II, shifts in style etc.
― Tim F, Thursday, 25 November 2010 04:31 (thirteen years ago) link
the equivalent of thinking that, say, 3d animation is for kids.
wouldn't say it's this kinda thing. more like, i've never bothered with any file-sharing or downloading, i tend to like artifacts, things i can curate and put on a shelf and then pull out at various times to reevaluate and hear again. so i've heard tracks here and there from the mixtapes. but once i leave youtube, i don't make an effort to download the full things and store 'em on my hard drive. not really the sins of the artist, more like i pay more attention to what's on physical format because it's what i've always done. maybe i'm old fashioned.

I don't think he's that much more popular either, but he has more commercial appeal than Curren$y does, let's just be honest here. Spitta's not the kind of rapper to make a "Say Yeah" or even "Black and Yellow."

i think the highest potential pop level of recognition for curren$y given his style and history is right around devin the dude levels, but what do i know maybe he lands a mainstream hit sooner or later

the reason ppl even know wiz is cuz curren$y put him on, and ppl know curren$y cus of wayne. basically their audience is the lil wayne post-carter ii mixtape fans. its a huge fanbase.

internet bias + black & yellow distorts things. (if wiz is more popular, its entirely on the basis of that single, which isnt why hes selling out colleges)

i did.curren$y is more popular than devin where and under what standards exactly? live shows? record sales? industry respect? among weedsmokers in the all important 19-34 demographic? on your blog?

i mean it in the traditional sense, that more people listen to him.
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:25 (thirteen years ago) link
i don't really think currensy cares about having a hit, which is what is holding him back from becoming any more popular than he already is
xps a) i don't think internet bias means anything when comparing two artists means anything and b) of course having a hit gives wiz an edge. duh. that's my point.
― The Reverend, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:25 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah I honestly don't see Curren$y ever having a hit. He's just not that guy.

fyi devin the ilx bubble artist in this case. he has some mild critical acclaim and older heads know him. but its a decreasing slice of old head rap fans. curren$y is a contemporary rap star w/ a broad fanbase. he has recorded w/ regional underground artists across the country, from j stalin to french montana

― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:30 (thirteen years ago) link
and ive given you 'quantifiable' reasons why
i don't agree with "mild critical acclaim" or even that curren$y is a star as of yet and it's not like devin hasn't already and isn't continuing to record with a shitton of regional guys but okay

i thought the whole album went platinum independently
regardless, talking about billboard numbers is grade-A stupid & pointless in this debate.
that's the problem tho w/ these arguments is that if we can't rely on what little quantitative numbers that we have, it's just one person's word vs the other's & it's hard to find the opposite argument to be legitimate

i'm basing it on how much i hear about Wiz from rap guys i know IRL or on twitter, how often he does big sold out shows in the area, other stuff like Wiz being on the official remix to a huge Trey Songz single even before "Black & Yellow" was even out. Wiz & Curren$y are definitely both pretty popular together and individually but it feels very clear whose mainstream profile is higher.

I really liked the first Pilot Talk but damn, Pilot Talk II is an improvement on all levels.
I liked the smooth production, but if there was a 'fault' at all with Pilot Talk, it's that sometimes the production was too relaxing and made me almost tune out the rapping. I think this feels more like a proper hip-hop album overall.
Curren$y brings a lot of tude too. "Fuck yo system, I get paid without it"....

First one has some great beats and great moments, but PT2 is so consistent and cohesive, definitely in the upper reaches of my albums of the year list. BTW, I'm listening to the new Destroyer right now and thinking that PT2 is like a rap version of Kaputt - similar musical aesthetic. and yes, I just smoked.

― O da Huge Manatee (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 April 2011 16:08 (twelve years ago) link
was talking about this w /a friend earlier but am i wrong or does alchemist kinda sound better w/ C than Ski
― geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Thursday, 21 April 2011 16:21 (twelve years ago) link
it's a different vibe, no? With Ski he sounds more like he's constantly floating on a cloud of weed smoke. he sounds more awake here. i fucks with both thoughlove the hell out of what Fiend is doing at the moment, btw
― rizzx, Thursday, 21 April 2011 16:30 (twelve years ago) link
This collabo is an excellent look for both dudes. Both Alch and Ski seem to work effortlessly with C$y tho, wouldn't be able to pick a 'better' fit atm.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 21 April 2011 16:44 (twelve years ago) link
Loving this, but isn't "the Type" like the third time spitta has made a chorus out of Big Boi lyrics? Maybe even all from Aquemini?
― champagne hippies trying to recapture their youth (Whitey on the Moon), Thursday, 21 April 2011 16:47 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, that feels kinda lazy at this point, but P and Spitta on a dope Alc beat overcomes that imo
― banjee trillness (The Reverend), Thursday, 21 April 2011 17:26 (twelve years ago) link
'the type'...u crazy for this one alc
love how the beat fades out and then fades back in with prodigy's booming voice

"love how the beat fades out and then fades back in with prodigy's booming voice"
Yah, excellent. Ive listened to The Type about 10 times in the last 24 hours, normally not my style.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 21 April 2011 18:40 (twelve years ago) link
curren$y should work with sid roams too (has this happened?)

― J0rdan S., Saturday, 27 August 2011 07:03 (twelve years ago) link
not on the tape btw even tho it has a drama drop
for real i could get down with a whole album of wayne going "and i'll still break her off like a chair leg" if he was rapping over some chill curren$y beats and letting his mind wander a bit ("yellow hearted... lemon meringue")
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 27 August 2011 07:06 (twelve years ago) link
heh, didn't recognize this as the "elevators" beat initially \(o_O)/

"squarey cubes" is like the proto-"fanute"
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:14 (eleven years ago) link
but that's what tip actually says. i never would've heard anything besides the actual french lyric if it hadn't been referenced multiple times on ilx.
― bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:20 (eleven years ago) link
some lyric sites have it as "not even square, he cube" -- maybe that's wrong tho idk, but it at least makes sense
― lamborghini persie (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:23 (eleven years ago) link
