haha cant shake these chill vibes bro. srsly wish the 7" version of ar kane's "when your sad" was up on youtube - seminal imo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGhGpciODa4

really like this dude (?) + feel like 'chillwave' is better/cooler/more meaningful when its kinda gauze-y + grasping rather than like "lol super nintendo" or w/e. nostalgia as absence, innocence as loss.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z3Lg2JNeoc

also kinda obsessed w/ this ever since sum1 used to close out a RA podcast - not really chillwave obv but i think its gr8.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFhQMgV5Xus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhqlenE--ho

<3 this - thinking about the connections btw like 80s dreampop 'twee' + minimal synth use of tone/space + chillwave youth/summer obsessions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCm7K9j6O00

still how many chillwave trax are just a churlish prematurely processed version of this song???? looken @ u tori y moi.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkTsBy8JHZE

i guess this like p old now but i still think its better than almost anything else. love how 'big' it is but still beset by all the same anxieties - chillwave w/o inverted commas????

of all chillwave-related artists, I think that Chaz Bundick (Toro y Moi / Les Sins) is way underhyped, while his tracks often are great, whether he does french touch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7fU7nC4pbQ
(this one is a straight Stardust reference and I believe I posted it somewhere before, but the hell with it, there's never enough of quality french house)
whether he plays his guitar:

calm down and have your feminax(ico) , ive been eagerly listening to the tracks on this thread to try and find some good bands that may be lost in the blanket cuss this stuff tends to get. If anything this is the first time ive realised how straight-up most of it is, the freak element seems to have been slimmed down to delayed vocals/shoddy recording. Ive been a fan of the sort of stuff that gets props on 20jfg for a long time. I guess i was just after something wierder a la James ferraro

I dont really get how most of this stuff differs from twee indie of the last 20 odd years.

it kinda doesnt? thats the point? i mean i feel like the most of the stuff that 'started' chillwave was unabashedly more masculine & hippie-ish than sarah records or w/e but the big difference is probably just that now cheap synths/laptops are the focal instrument rather than guitars

this is the first time ive realised how straight-up most of it is, the freak element seems to have been slimmed down to delayed vocals/shoddy recording

haha well there's weirder stuff that could probably get classified as 'chillwave' considering how loose plax & i are being itt but i tend to think of chillwave as an attempt to translate some of the sounds/textures + aesthetic concerns from 'weirder' psych/drone/freak stuff of the past few yrs into a 'pop' format

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 16:59 (seven years ago) Permalink

nice def. but i think it kinda cuts out the unifying *concerns* of chillwave wrt nostalgia and how that is synthesized via emphasis on paratextuality etc.

the most important things abt chillwave are probably a) the yearning for escape into the 'idealized past'/childhood/pop culture nostalgia b) sense of aimlessness/unbeing/displacement as stand-in for current social/economic anxieties cf:

btw this is not in the spirit of this thread. i think its important that chillwave means a lot of things, kinda prefer this end of it to the more straight up "indie in a windtunnel" aesthetic tho obv i like both. (see my above def. for what ~chillwave means to me~)

also wrt beach fossils, i dont think i've heard any of the stuff from the last few posts before. but that outer limits thing is pretty great.

Any full album recs more along the electro side less on the guitary side?

a lot of the dancier chillwave stuff leans towards almost being space disco but:

blondes "touched" ep
active child "curtis lane" ep
hatchback "colors of the sun" (proto)
delorean "subiza"
com truise "cyanide sisters" ep

Yeah I've often confused Chillwave with Balearic as well except that chillwave is usually more lo fi and druggier sounding.

I still get confused as to what Delorean is classified as because they've always struck me more as Balearic than Chillwave.

And people like Dam-Funk and Onra aren't considered Chillwave, are they?

"i associate "chillwave" with "balearic." is that totally off-base?"

im glad someone brought this up. they share a very similar dna. hazy dreamy music that is made for comedowns or chilling out.
the ocean is a prominent metaphor that drives both genres. they also both share a love of nostalgia. "smooth" sounds are also operative for both genres. the only difference is that balearic is meant for dancing at 4 am as you are coming down, chillwave doesnt seem to have much dancing in the cards.
altho conceivably one can dance to washed out. i think thats where the difference lies, one genres is driven to dancers, while the others is geared towards rockers, but sonically i hear tons of overlap.

am considering getting into sun araw on the basis of this on patrol thing which is excellent. it is exactly what i think chillwave is supposed to be about, ideally (or was supposed to be about, back when it was pure and before hipsters came and ruined it). anyway, i understand from this thread that the categorization of sun araw as chillwave is somehow controversial and part of a contested zone. so am i out of step with consensus in thinking that sun araw is totally chillwave? or how do i get into other stuff that is like this, if maybe there is a thread for that instead?

I am sure someone will tell me I'm doing it wrong but I'm going to pretend chillwave = slightly sad slightly repetitive basic-timbre synth music.

but it does make me think of those microphones records (i may be the only person alive wholl still cop to liking those...)

I still dig them a bunch, not so much the Mt. Eerie material. Wouldn't call "The Moon" chillwave though.

Z S, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 05:18 (seven years ago) Permalink

i think of chillwave as spreading out from those sad repetitive vibes to include all the stuff that would sound good on the same playlist and also that those vibes issue forth from. like obviously some anco and black dice, but lots of guitar stuff too because ducktails come on essential to my comprehension. sad, evocative, nostalgic, basic, blurry, homemade, hissy, repetitive, washed out, beachy, summery, chill. not necessarily synths tho. it's not about being narrow.

a dystopian society awaits if we continue on this path. (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 05:29 (seven years ago) Permalink

Wouldn't call "The Moon" chillwave though.

i linked it because i think it fits really well into this idea of proto-chillwave i have - mb not sonically although the intro is p close - particularly the way he portrays nature/the ocean as both isolating & freeing ("the roar of waves, the pounding surf, two bodies on the earth/ it was intense just getting to be there next to you") + the yearning for escape into the past ("i drove up to the city at night and found the place where you grew up") and the wilderness ("i finally felt like I was breathing free").

also i mean a song about love + chilling on a roof & watching the moon + death?

to think that this music has anything to do w/people that aren't hipsters is just crazy talk

lol

imm 'chillwave' is kinda hard to define 'sonically' since its a little all over the map although repetition + distortion + synths + space are all important. what makes chillwave stuff different from balearic is the pronounced melancholy streak that chillwave has it wears it anxieties a lot more openly

does previous sun araw come anywhere close to this level of effortless free-form drip & drool?

plax (ico), Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:01 (seven years ago) Permalink

@mark: feels like sonically/lyrically/aesthetically 'chillwave' songs are beset by anxiety abt the future - theyre resolutely backwards-looking, towards an idealized self/place/time that youve already lost. plax's feris bueller nod is otm its music for ppl that are blowing off finals bcuz you were never going to pass anyway so why not go to the beach and get blitzed on bud w/ lime & just float in the ocean and watch the sun set

lots of these tracks are even structurally uncertain - they meander or burst to life and then fade or simply ride a groove for a few minutes and stutter out - the repetition of/motifs incl. childhood, youth, summer, vacation, escape, nature are all ways of ignoring reality. its fearful music made at a p fearful time but it deals with that by pushing those elements down in the mix - theres an 'undertow' of darkness the delays, distortion, echoes that speaks of the always present now.

also the loss that haunts the depictions of the various edens also gets doubled back into the future - youve lost your future before you even had it - so all thats left is a sunny beach or glade or p girl on a bike now now now

bored cant sleep thought id do a top 10 chillwave trax of 2k10 rundown. well see how far i get b4 i get 2 bored to keep going

10 Computer Magic - Teenage Ballad (High School)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79xL0iW2UCk

i guess the idea of a song abt being a bored young girl in suburbia 'who just wants to be free' is typically a sentiment for songs by lames like arcade fire or taylor swift but danz puts all the focus on the limits of her own yearning & uncertainty. the woozy frustration of the repeated 'no, no, no' part makes whats a kinda boilerplate chillwave synth track something deeply felt.

09 Emily Reo - Car

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INa_6vHuAwo

'distance' is the name of the game in reo's cover of built to spill's 'car'. it uses some fairly cheap delay/distortion effects to separate reo from the listener her montone barely ranging above the song's general drone. but its such a beautiful song that when the cracks appear in reo's facade it makes the desire for escape and renewal that much more urgent. 'i wanna see movies of my dreams' is a p rad chillwave epitaph

08 Beautiful Unicorn - Let's Kick It

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hBQaxqI7cY

one of the best tracks from the pastiche obsessed 80s dance end of chillwave i dont really have a lot to say abt this song just think it str8 kills for every single minute its on

07 C V L T S - Luck Surf

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBhrH6Qz5Po

there's something unfinished abt this track i keep expecting it to range beyond the three simple parts it has. at times it seems like the undertone of disonance will overcome the track sprawling out into true noise at other times it feels like the song might tighten up into a 'real' pop song. instead it kinda just hangs there running that groove raw, keeping you guessing.

06 Motion Sickness of Time Travel - Everything Must Die

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDdjpTJB9Lc

not a very chill sentiment! & while the chilly, processed vocals & the skittering synths glide over a track thats probably abt as ambient as 'chillwave' gets the glassy, distant, anxious music feels like a good encapsulation of what i get from the genre. its pretty but lonely, i can never make out what the girl is supposed to be saying, or telling me, or singing, & the whole thing seems afraid of itself. its music that feels uncertain of its place in the world, or at least thats how it feels to me.

Hyrule's (Lamp), Thursday, 23 December 2010 08:15 (six years ago) Permalink

05 Beach Fossils - The Horse

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4oko3Hj9r4

there are a bunch of great bands making sunny, jangley guitar pop with distorted vocals and some 'weird' flourishes & i like quite a few of them. & there are a bunch of great vidz linked itt along a similar line from toro y moi, wild nothing, pearl harbour, seapony probably others. but this is the song that i would play on repeat walking home from parties in the summer, the one where i know all the words, the one that i love the most

04 Games - Strawberry Skies

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5scYXIvAr7w

it feels impossible that this song isnt longer like there should be 5 minutes more of the midtrack build or just more in general idk. really not much to say about this its just a great 80s dance track with just enough melancholy to still feel like chillwave

03 Teen Inc. - Friend of the Night

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n27MTAPoy2A

smoothly chill rnb groove sounds hollow and ominous on closer inspection. god this song is so lonely, that whistle sounds like the mournful wind of winter, who the fuck is friends here, everyone dies alone. too cool to think about it i guess.

02 Tennis - Baltimore/South Carolina

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qkg3PhN0xpo&feature=related

i had hard time choosing btw these two so just cheated and put the whole 7". its yknow, chillwave, lo-fi, golden summer songs abt aimless and mostly unhappy seeming ppl. its gorgeous and obvious and wonderful. also when i saw them live they played for like twenty minutes, which is sort of perfect & right abt what i always aim for.

01 CFCF - Before and After Light

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsvC0iTxok8

the very beginning of this song sounds a lot like the music from final fantasty when you 1st cross the bridge north of coneria. i dont think thats why i like this song so much - its delicate and pretty and relaxed - but it helps. i had this whole idea about how this track has this interplay btw the nostalgic, chill, simple sounds of chillwaves and these anxious, dark-sounding stabs that keep intruding & what a great example of what drives chillwave &c &c. its p stupid but i do think theres something 'representative' about this track, maybe just how unrepresentative it feels on 1st blush

i dont get 'cheeky irony' from pink & i thought chill wave was supposed to be seeped in nostalgia not irony

― challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, January 25, 2011 2:27 AM (10 hours ago)

I wanted to say something about chillwave. I think if you look through this thread and the mini-lectures that Lamp and I give there's two distinct approaches. Lamp is focussed on the specific emotional condition of chillwave whereas I've p much taken a more structuralist approach. Both have merit and compliment each other, but what is important to know about chillwave is that it is by nature a synthetic genre (lamp and I have both argued that it is to a large extent a curator-genre also) Its important to bear in mind that its structural synthesis and explicitly quotational use of signifiers is in essense a metonym for its emotional core.

most of us can agree on the stando genre hallmarks, electronic beats, fuzzy samples, drifting sad vocals. what i want to talk about tho is why i quote the little exchange above, that is, why the partic. nostalgia of chillwave is easily mistaken for coy irony.

chillwave as a genre is incredibly self conscious. it tends to focus on the its own surfaces: gauzy palimpsests like faded photographs, memories blurred and irretrievable. The sadness in chillwave is a product of how the past is invoked *as* something impenetrable. The 80s refs are not ubiquitous, there are plenty of bands that seem to invoke 60s girl groups or 90s fuzz pop or new age meditation tapes. some reference to the past is enevitable, some lost eden.

This is the internal paradox of chillwave, its most emotionally resonant features are also its most superficial. it speaks to a generation so immersed in the refractive lenses of pop-culture that every moment seems filtered and pre-encoded. like that melancholic feeling of listening to your headphones in a new city and seeing everything framed like in a movie. the space implied between your headphones is abstracted, surface rubbing against surface in dense layers, and the cracks that time is lost in.

Love this thread despite somehow staying off. Thinking about r. stevie moore - more talk of him when ariel pink first appeared and gave interviews but I hear less now - and how his detachment from his sources as a strange house-bound rock star covering tv themes &c. are overt & form a big part of his appeal. it feels like the peculiar pleasures he taps into are underlining rather than glossing over the distance between him&his voice and the fertile colourful world of babes&stadiums. this is early true TV era pop in a way that someone like richard meltzer would hate/not get. I think this revelling in the gap between you & yr muse&content, enjoying the anaethecised feeling of never being able to make contact, is something he has in common w/ ppl posted in this thread. i cld build on this idea maybe.

appreciated plax's post a lot, some very apposite analogies - melancholic feeling of listening to your headphones in a new city and seeing everything framed like in a movie. but i'm not quite sure i know what's meant by structural synthesis or how that can be a metonym for anything.

ogmor, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:21 (six years ago) Permalink

i think what i meant is something like this: I've kindof talked a lot about the focus on the paratextual: samples *as* samples for eg. that is to say: dislocated fragments of sound like memories. Each element seems like something half forgotten, familiar but blurry. the tools used in the production recreate what the artists are trying to do emotionally: the impossible task of trying to recreate the past from these faded fragments. In this way the songs feel less like compositions and slightly more like the scene of some sort of ritual, the recasting of all this debris into something real and tangible.

plax (ico), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:42 (six years ago) Permalink

lamp has been amazing on this thread, the top 10 was great & we need ppl who are able to talk about this lucidly who also have shit like final fantasy in their vocab

the tools used in the production recreate what the artists are trying to do emotionally: the impossible task of trying to recreate the past from these faded fragments << this appeals to me in part, but i don't really think chillwave is an honest attempt to regress or recover or recreate the past, so much as a play on the unbridgable gap to the past as a way of moving round the seeming impossibility of making something new.

certain cultivated arseholes have decried chillwave as uninspired & 'creatively bankrupt' & presumably do not feel the weight of the presence of the entirety of recorded music, tv, articles &c. making new meaning impossible because all moves have been made so many times - the end of rock through over-exposure. i guess whiney et al wld say the self-conscious chillwave babe starts w/ if not a tabula rasa then at least possible routes forward. same sentiment is not shared by say, DUCKTAILS, who instead phrases his predicament: "you look to find direction, but all you see is your reflection".

it's not a retrograde attempt to reach back so much as an engagement w/ the current, present afterimages that are left from what's gone before. bookshops are starting 'memory' sections atm, memory as opposed to history i guess, memory of the past as opposed to the reality of the past which is only one youtube away so whats the point in spending energy on that. the fact that it's the past isn't particularly relevant (there's no particular mental distinction between past&present) so much as the engagement with that collective conscious - it's the same w/ lil b chanting ellen degeneres or playing the x-men theme. it's all muffled and incomplete, which makes it a lot more pliable but it's still resonant and can suddenly connect unexpectedly.

so you sit in yr EAGLES WORLD TOUR 1994 cap and create yr own spectral mythology ala james ferraro or w/e

ogmor, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 02:00 (six years ago) Permalink

i get what yr saying and i agree w/ u to a large extent except for "the fact that it's the past isn't particularly relevant" I like the bit about nothing being written onto a tabula rasa. instead there is a landscape strewn with shards of pop culture. social networking sites where people communicate emotion via youtube clips from old tv shows. The present is stitched together from the discarded remnants of the past. its kinda like walter benjamin and the angelus novus, the trash heap of history.

I love lamps line abt "how hard it is to feel things." I feel like this taps into the core of chillwaves disconnection. It's emotional music about not feeling anything. Its is simultan. anesthetised and yearning for a romanticised *past*. When I say past though I don't necc. mean a personal history, but an *idea* of the past. It is both idealised as a moment where you could feel something (i feel like this is always lyrically clear in lyrical motifs like teenagers, highschool, beaches, summer camp even the idea of summer and its fleeting temporality) and also like you said a kind of common language that people speak through now.

its like that andy warhol line abt how emotions always seem more real in movies. This seems to me to be the source of chillwaves nostalgia: not for a time *before* teen movies and youtube but for the source of those ~feelings~; smthng we can only barely piece together now.

thinking a lot about the way difficult times bring out the sense of foreboding & anxiety & that what ogmor's talking abt - the obv techno-historical dead end, trying to reconcile the past/present through art - is there but i wonder too abt the 'animal spirit' of the times & if that makes it seem harder to find 'new' or worthwhile things to say or ways of saying

like theres a quote from miss lonelyheart's: "at college and perhaps for a year afterwards they had believed in literature, had believed in Beauty, and in personal expression as an absolute end. when they lost this belief they lost everything" which kinda haunts me & helps me see 'chillwave' as a determined attempt to avoid the bitterness & defeat of this - in an age pervasive w/ loss its looking for something to hold on to or a mode of ~being~ that reconciles now and then?

i mean i also wanted to start a new thread called 'none but nyarlathotep 2011' for this kind of music if only to escape the joke genre name but also because i was thinking abt lovecraft's "the past is real. it's all there is" and how that short story's vision of alienated modernity fit so tightly w/ the move from 'chillwave' to 'witchhouse' and the increasingly dark tones of the small subset of 'new music' that im concerned w/

welcome back
good posts, everyone. Reading intently here.

who is ogmor? His name sounds like a misunderstood monster from a comic book.

I like that idea of the artist searching for a direction to take and only seeing mirrors. It makes sense. Everything I know about Benjamin I know from gaddis, and that was mind hurting stuff like if Glenn Gould wishes he were the Steinway to be closer to Bach, what does Bach do to be closer to Bach? Like to what degree is there a perfect Bach in the sheet music and the mechanisms of the piano and tape and mixing deck, and is there some equivalent that Bach himself was looking for, as if he could also remove himself from the equation (which reminds me of Stein's what are masterpieces). And if the realm of transcendence is for art then this makes a kind of sense, but I don't know.

I can't think of chillwave without thinking about cognitive development in children. I think specifically of the way we've lost oral culture and a lot of speech modes and replaced them with technologically assisted communications and commercial entertainment, while chemically people have processed the happy meals and bbs door games and shit the way people processed their oral culture - which seems what everyone has said but whatever.
McLuhan says that global communications have brought in a new acoustic age so to him maybe it's like the indelible parts of digested pop and commercial culture are our folk culture and these musics are a natural way to celebrate and tell about them. See above whatever.

i kindof like holding on to the chillwave name, i sortof like that it as a reclaimed pejorative i guess.

i like what bam is saying about "the way we've lost oral culture and a lot of speech modes and replaced them with technologically assisted communications and commercial entertainment" and it def seems like a kind of corollary to what i was trying to say. That is that pop culture has become folk culture in a way bc of how ppl have become disconnected from folk traditions via popular entertainment, cosmopolitanism etc. I think you can see this in some of the critical reception chillwave has gotten, ppl talking about musicians using their laptops like acoustic guitars and piecing together something primitive and quiet in their bedrooms that speaks to something private and traditional.

do you mean in relation 2 their being some sort of built-in inevitable failure. like you have to admit that this kind of transcendence is impossible and in a way it becomes a kindof playing out of that inevitability or?

plax I just saw your post but I addressed the issue of the impossibility (nonsense) of transcendence in my email. I think the resolution of the body removal problem is the actual mechanics of the piano/machine that you can touch and play with. It gives the artist a backdoor. It seems like I've created a problem that isn't there - I have and I admitted as much. But when I get depressed and my life seems completely joyless I start doing things like denying authorship and I think that's sort of what I was doing with Bach a year ago october, as if "Bach" were a functional, communally agreed on term that isn't where the preludes and fugues exactly come from. feel like shit

I think you're being nice and not sarcastic. That Emily Reo tape wasn't good at all - not chillwave, more like guitar strumming and singing and a really annoyingly low recording level. Would make you a tape maybe but that's sort of ocd, because I had this prefab thing that turned out to be disappointing and so I feel I have to replace it with something but I know I don't.

I kind of want the tip of the tongue/nostalgia/hypnagogia aspect of this to collectively run its course and see a new sharp premodern music come to fore.

i don't really understand why star slinger is getting lumped in with chillwave/indie stuff, sounds like straight-up rap beats. like southern 808 beats + early '00s kanye/just blaze-style sampling.

adult music person (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:44 (six years ago) Permalink

haha the very obv recycling of the early kanye style vocal sample is the most chillwave thing abt that track, maybe! also just the haze and the repeated vocals the way it plays with structure and pace (not the right word um) its full of chillwave/related signifiers also:

the teams vs star slinger record that that track is from is on mexican summer their videos nod @ pil's radio 4 (linked itt by plax lol) the stick w/ the whole faded polaroid blurred landscape aesthetic &c &c

WINNING. (Lamp), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:51 (six years ago) Permalink

the label and video are just presentation/window dressing though. i like his tracks a lot, but i don't hear all that much haze or nostalgia factor. someone like matthewdavid has way more of that going on.

adult music person (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:57 (six years ago) Permalink

well if you buy into the idea of chillwave/whichhaus as a 'curatorial' genre than the 'window dressing' matters a lot. i mean obv part of how this stuff distingushes itself is by the way it connects the emotional content of the music w/ the aesthetic milieu it exists within & so although there arent strong sonic similarties btw every song itt they share a # of structural/formal/paramusical qualities: repetitions, reference, reflexivity &c &c

idk i mean the layering & echo & repetition in 'punch drink love' connects it p well to lots of other chillwave stuff even if the specific sonic palette mines different sources from say cool runnings

WINNING. (Lamp), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:09 (six years ago) Permalink

anyway

a) even if you 'don't buy' my assertion that teams vs star slinger belongs in the chillwave thread there isnt really anywhere else to put it
b) its a rad track imo & i regret sleeping on last year's EP
c) 'say please' is probably an even tighter jam but i lynx too much

what! instrumental beat- and sample-based music (or whatever you want to call it) a pretty big tent right now, and to me this could easily fit alongside gold panda and various brainfeeder stuff.

adult music person (Jordan), Thursday, 3 March 2011 15:48 (six years ago) Permalink

i meant 'put it' in the sense of a place to post videos & discuss the song on ilm i.e. ppl posting gold panda videos itt also

also lol @ 'lumped in' i guess, contra ilm, this is a place where mentioning a song along side 'chillwave/indie' is not some kind of aspersion but a compliment

F♯ A♯, Red♯ Blue♯ (Lamp), Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:13 (six years ago) Permalink

even tho chillwave is mostly abt 80's vibes/samples, the 50's (60's?) sample in punch drunk love works just as well employed to the same effect. like, music played at a skating rink or at a thrift store lol

flopson, Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:19 (six years ago) Permalink

well part of what i think is rad is that theres the effect of the sample itself - the sound, the sentiment it conveys - but it also gets framed again by so obviously referencing kanye its kinda like what plax talks about where the intent isnt just to reference something 80s but also contextualize it & talk about its delivery &c &c. so instead of nodding at vhs or tv broadcasts theyre referencing early 00s hip hop, acknowledging the layers of media that surrond and influence things/creating distance e.g. "revelling in the gap between you & yr muse&content," or as plax indicates the "tools used in the production recreate what the artists are trying to do emotionally: the impossible task of trying to recreate the past from these faded fragments"

i mean i think its a really beautiful song but part of why it appeals to me aside from its formal qualities is the way it uses these techniques common to chillwave trax to also comment on the emotional purpose of the song, to recreate for the listener the emotional context theyre interested in

this is 'older' at least in the universe of five blog posts a day + unlimited mediafire d/lers but i keep coming back to this song - its central sentiment of 'dont try/dont try so hard/my love is easy' and the way the track squiggles and sways against the vocal harmonies makes me sad but i like how self-aware & essentially knowing the singer is. 'we get more than we deserve' indeed

cool runnings - i am you (starslinger remix)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFxLXj2FOCc
dominique & the new star slinger ep reminded me of this song, which i think is fantastic. the remix adds the echo & as much space as the endless blue sky but ties it the simplest thump. its a good example of how 'chillwave' songs can use static structures & a 'poor' range to make something catchy & pop & feeling

peaking lights - key sparrow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVgFaAZn8cc
the titular sparrow is 'much too common' & 'nothing special' but this is my fave track on the new album & its laidback sunny melancholy is perfectly pitched imo. a hazy ode to trying and failing, a recognition of limitations

young athletes leauge - glossed over

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUsMqqpdJy8
haha kinda dont have much to say abt this i think the bones of the track sound like the sorta thing u cld make on the playstation two mtv music generator game

death and vanilla - ghosts in the machine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YWnqdPE-S0
a friend told me that this is a p direct reference of some 80s thing but i cant remember what she sd. i hear a noir morricone filtered through early english dream pop. i dont think it really matters tho bcuz this is such a perfect marriage of emotional intent & technical skill the track just glides. i think its really beautiful

its mb more darkwave or something than chillwave but really beautiful & good, the vocals are breathy & lush though not evil at all. apparently they have been around for a while making ambient stuff, some long moments of that. there might be a million albums of stuff that sounds just like this (esp today) but, i haven't heard it. kind of perfect very simple, so few constituents & a really constant but deep movement thruout

i do like grimes stuff, i bought a cdr a while ago that is pretty good cant seem to find it. only time i hear chillwave atmospherically here is on the pa at the loft where i first saw her, & seems to be more & more going on there lately. sounds more like 90s trip hop to me than most stuff here. my fav local chillwave thing is d'eon, sometimes pretty clubby & silly, 90s house, breakbeats, some of its close to the starsling stuff upthread

this band vondelpark i've been loving them like a lot. I feel like i want to start a thread about them but they've just released a couple of things. they live just up the road from me in peckham apparently but they have this shrouded in tumblr internet-absence thing going on so I dont actually know what they look like or anything. this song reminds me of staying up to watch movies on tv at my parents house during the summer holidays. like when the house is quiet and dark but everything feels close and humid. it feels bleary eyed and yearning. Its feeding into the feelings i'm having about this summer a lot and in a way i don't think i can articulate right now.

Why do Ford & Lopatin get tagged as chillwave? I seriously dont' understand that at all.

Clarke B., Friday, 5 August 2011 15:08 (six years ago) Permalink

this probably is more of tumblr post but its origins are in ilx so:

i've been thinking a fair bit about the discussion/argument that i had w/ whiney on i guess another thread about the value of 'chillwave' & particularly about the way 'nostalgia' functions as an important emotional and aesthetic throughline w/in the 'genre'. upthread i ref'd lovecraft saying 'the past is real. it's all there is' & i think this is vital to understanding in large part whats attractive/'relevant' about chillwave/the larger cultural moment. like i was reading robertson davies today and he was saying something about how 'history is the way we make sense of the present' but how do we make sense of a present that is largely indistinguishable from the past?

this evening i was djing a party where they wanted '90s classics' and it was both disconcerting and unremarkable to see ppl barely out of their teens dancing along to mid-90s house classix; there was little to no divide btw the people who might be old enough to remember the songs i was playing fondly & the people for whom these songs should have little personal/historical meaning... isnt one of the consequences of technology to help divorce cultural artifacts from history? or put another way: if i still have access to the cultural products and ephemera of my childhood via youtube, torrents, ebay &c &c isnt my affection/consumption of them essentially present-tense?

i mean plax has been smarter/more eloquent about this but i think the more retro-steeped parts of 'chillwave' are partly about confronting a past that constantly surrounds us and dealing w/ the difference in emotional states btw 'then' and 'now'. or more clearly in talking about how the past never leaves us both emotionally (we still have access to those memory/feelings) or culturally (i still hear/see those songs/vidz) it makes explicit how pervasive our personal histories are, and how lonely that feels. taking the new washed out record for example i think you can hear this lack of delineation btw modern/historical - the music doesnt really seem to speak formally of any specific moment in time while also sounding vaguely 'dated'. but also taking the lazier, more direct signifier type of thing e.g 'i named my band MIRCO MACHINES remember MICRO MACHINES' this is also a kind of confirmation, of course i remember micro machines, i could buy them on ebay if wanted, theres no mystery or distance but a basic affirmation. i think whiney would probably scoff at this but when our shared culture is so fragmented that kind of confirmation, that we exist at the same time, is kinda valuable/meaningful?

i quoted proust too itt but this isnt about creating madelines but about erecting signposts in a time when memory and experience are almost interchangeable. & this all comes back to my posts about anxiety, in this equation the future stands resolutely outside our xp but the past is perfectly ours, knowable and controlled. so it becomes a refuge.

Lamp, Sunday, 7 August 2011 07:22 (six years ago) Permalink

idk thats pretty convincing but im not sure "the past is perfectly ours" i think the fraught knowability/unknowability of the past is central to how i grasp this whole thing. like the pieces are there but you can never put them back together again.

℗⎣▲✘ (ico), Sunday, 7 August 2011 18:55 (six years ago) Permalink

yeah i think your right i was p drunk when i wrote this, not that i dont stand behind the central idea but its not totally coherent... there are tensions i guess btw the past as lost eden and the past as slave to the present, thats part of whats driving the music really

Lamp, Sunday, 7 August 2011 20:29 (six years ago) Permalink

man vondelpark is p great - really into 'california analog dream' its kinda like a mid 00s indie rock song stretched taut and irradiated

i dont where else to post about this but ken seeno's tape on nna 'invisible surfer on an invisible wave' is so fucking great just these incredible expanses of synth and space but firmly rooted in the 'natural'. i guess it probably belongs on the knew age thread but i like this thread better and knew agers are just chillwavers in the morning anyway

melted toys - lost connection

probably not the best song on their ep but i like how much of a pastiche this particular song is the heaviness of the affections make it seem kinda rootless a bristol board collage of montone dreampop and euro influences

That's it right there. Good music is good music. Young people aren't supposed to be able to recognize and enjoy good music? The whole cult of the new, and the obsession with timeliness is imo, a strange type of insanity promoted by journalists who are taught to think only about the news.

yeah, i think "anodyne washed-out new order/fleetwood mac" is a good description for most mass market chillwave. there were a few great chillwave acts but there was also a flood of generic "chill" acts -- both synth and guitar-oriented -- and i think those are also part of the movement. i heard this g&tc song for the first time at shake shack.
