This is because we'll need a thread devoted to her sooner or later. Sooner is better, I say.

I can't stop listening to this song, but watching the video makes me feel like a dirty old man (and I don't care that she -is- 18 years old as of a few days ago...she looks like a baby here).

Bloodshy & Avant. My favorite part (that's not the hold & repeat effect on specific words) is the little ascending and descending sequencer part the runs throughout the song's chorus. Very cool.

Based on "17," I was definitely NOT expecting to like whatever's coming next. But "One" is fantastic. I read somewhere that this is gonna be her UK launch single, and the US launch single is going to be something different. I can only imagine it will probably be the worst song on her album.

http://www.theprophetblog.net/sky-ferreira-announces-debut-us-single-obsession-and-album-release-date

While Europe are enjoying the sophisticated, steely pop of Sky Ferreira’s “One”, the newcomer will be making things a little easier for American’s to swallow with the release of her radio-friendly debut US single “Obsession”. According to Sky, her record label forced encouraged her to release the tune, seeing the potential for a huge #1 hit. In a new interview with Arjan Writes, Sky grits her teeth and talks about the single, and how she believes it will open doors for her to release more of her own music in the future.

“A number one record is cool. That’s kinda why I’m doing ‘Obsession’. I mean, I like ‘Obsession’ – it’s a really good pop song, but it’s extremely pop. That wasn’t exactly what my goal was… But I’m glad that ‘One’ came out before that so people know that I can still do other stuff. I wanna be capable of doing all different types of music… but I’m glad that I get to do something like ‘Obsession’. I’m really lucky… At first I was really bitter about it, because I wanted my songs to be on my record, so it was a bit hard for me. I appreciate it and I understand that I have to compromise with the people who are distributing me and making it possible for me to have my own music out.

“I still very much stand behind ‘Obsession’… ‘Obsession’ is a funny thing; It might be my biggest song ever. It’s sad when I think of it that way though, coz I always wanted it to be my song that was the biggest, but I like it very much – it’s really catchy and everything.

“Doing a record like that just opens doors to letting me start other projects to and being able to come out with my own music. I guess when you have your name on the radio it kinda helps or something, but I like other stuff. Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” was completely different than “Alejandro” or something, it’s like a 360 or something you know, and over time she started coming out with [her own stuff].”

It’s interesting how Europe can get something that is a little less commercial, yet for America the music needs to be dumbed down and very commercial for people to even give it a chance. I’m relieved that Sky is expressing her true thoughts over her new single though, instead of going out and being fake like a lot of other pop stars. Besides, it sounds like “Obsession” is going to be a smash, and that her album will be a great mixture of radio-friendly hits, as well as quirky, edgier electro-pop.

Speaking of Sky’s album, it will officially be released on January 11, 2011.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh American label, why you gots to fuck around with things? (Granted, I haven't heard "Obsession," but if they're following the Ke$ha model and going with something completely obnoxious to create waves, I fear for the safety of my ears.)

Coincidentally, I had just listened to this for the first time somewhere else today. I'm not totally sold. The production is impeccable, but I find the chorus a little meh, melodically. The melody on the first verse reminds me a lot of a Kate Bush song circa "Hounds of Love" but I don't remember which one.

Well so far for me it's a half-hit, One, and a miss, 17, which sound like a bit like a leftover LaRoux track so I'm not that exited yet.

Aha, you're right, the original is much, much better. Still like the Sky one though.

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Whoever produced the Sky cover is obviously more rooted in club production than radio production. That BOOM BOOM BOOM beat sort of bludgeons all the charm out of it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:43 (thirteen years ago) link

"one" is terrific. i totally wrote off sky at first when i saw "17" playing on mtv, but wow, "one" completely changed my attitude about her. i hope the album is good!

and yeah, it seems like they're doing the ke$ha/"tik tok" approach for "obsession" -- build profile 'organically' via internet/myspace, etc., then unleash guaranteed-smash single late in summer, release officially a bit later, then let it slowly conquer airwaves just in time for the enormous post-christmas sales. it's probably a fucking dr luke/benny blanco prod. smh. (i was listening to the radio on the way home tonight and heard three dr. l/bb produced songs back to back. that is fucked up.)

and yes "alejandro" is wonderful

Anyway, I found a zip file of some demos, etc people have collected from over the past year or so. I vaguely remember hearing about her a LONG time ago, when she was still just a Myspace buzzword, but I don't remember if I actually listened to anything on her streamer.

Some of this stuff is good ("Femme Fatale" for sure), and some of it is really, really underdeveloped ("Almost"). afaict, this album could go either way.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, despite starting the thread, I don't expect her to take the wheel and steer pop in an altogether new direction. tbh, I haven't heard enough of what she's written yet to even know if she's a solid bet or if she's patchy. I do like "One" and "Femme Fatale," though, and those are incredibly different types of songs. otoh, if it's true that "Obsession" is a Ryan Tedder composition, I can just about already predict what it will sound like. She's probably wise to distance herself from it in advance, and that indicates to me she's pretty aware of what she's doing and knows she might have to do grunt work a couple times to get to a better place.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm surprised the one you like is "17", lex, given how much she sounds like La Roux in the chorus.

kk just heard "sex rules" which was very easily googlable. good tune and nice production, yes. i agree that her voice doesn't sound just right for the track as it is right now, but i'd say it's still a step up from "obsession" in that regard, or at least what we've heard of "obsession."

teledyldonix, Thursday, 12 August 2010 14:43 (thirteen years ago) link

And American labels wonder why they have a hard time selling records...maybe it's because they coerce new artists into recording tracks against their will that some focus group has determined will be in the Top 10.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 August 2010 16:14 (thirteen years ago) link

So is "One" actually officially available? I can't seem to buy, borrow or steal an actual mp3 (there's one poor, watery mp3 that sounds like it was ripped from either vinyl or youtube).

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 19 August 2010 18:14 (thirteen years ago) link

It was ripped from youtube.

The single is officially released in September. Have no idea why they waited so long between debuting the video and putting up the mp3 for purchase...other than to make people REALLY WANT to legit mp3. In which case, their plot worked.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:05 (thirteen years ago) link

They pushed it forward, thankfully.

Since I've listened to the video edit about a zillion times, the album version seems oddly too long. Still cool to have, though.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Listening now to Obsession in good quality through headphones and there's enough interesting stuff in the production to distract from the fact it's a pretty shitty single.

When is Ryan Tedder going to be hauled in and tried for crimes against humanity?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 09:03 (thirteen years ago) link

"He had this song called obsession that he originally pitched to a whole bunch of other people at first, but people put it down, it didn't seem right...It was pitched to like Rihanna, Adam Lambert, like all these huge people. Whatever, another man’s trash is another person’s treasure."
“I had to compromise with it. I mean, love the song and it’s very poppy and stuff, but you know, I think I just wanted to try something a little different at first, but, you know, I have to do what I have to do to get out. I mean, I don’t, like, hate the song — well, some parts of it I don’t really like.”

I like how it's just one of the songs tacked onto the end of the new NOW! compilation. I hope it goes nowhere and no one ends up associating it with her and that it doesn't make the cut for the album's tracklist.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:15 (thirteen years ago) link

the sad thing is that even as an 'album only' track on the now compilation, it is still easily outselling "one" (not quite sure why these compilations still sell this much)

lol I just left a reply on her Facebook page to her post about "Obsession" being the song of the day on some site or something, but it was deleted for some reason. To paraphrase, "I love everything you do, but I kind of hope 'Obsession' flops for no other reason than it might make people stop paying Ryan Tedder money to do things. Anything."

Guys, that song is really SO BAD.

The video for Obsession is up. In it, Sky is a crazy Michael Madsen fan.

Okay.My album is no longer coming out on 1-11-11...unfortunately.It was done, but things/people constantly change within ALL record labels & in life (DUH!). I am now recording even more material for the record because I feel like I've grown (musically) since when I was 15-16 years old. All of the songs will eventually come out because they are all important to me. I'm trying to push for an EP to come out in February too. It's been extremely frustrating, but you know "these kinda things happen for a reason".Thank you for the support and I'm glad I can CLARIFY what's going on...Keep your eyes peeled for some big things happening this winter...STAY TUNED!<3

PS .I am still on EMI

I'm coming out with my debut album next year and a new single early 2012 (Feb. most likely)

I now have amazing management & a team who is extremely supportive. I'm so excited to move forward!

Hopefully I can release a dance record also that has all of my old demos & some new ones that are electro pop....

She's not the most polished live performer because, up to this point, she's always been pushed as a video artist. I think the labels have finally given in and let her go her own way (which seems to have worked) and now she's got to get up to speed.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 06:11 (eleven years ago) link

yeah she's definitely a bit flat during that bridge

but hey, good for her. i love her latest ep (well i loved the first one too, but you know) and i think the album will probably be good too (not to mention she actually has a shot at releasing it this time)

Not quite as sensual but every bit as stylish was Sky Ferreira, the 21-year-old pop singer who was arrested on drug charges last weekend in New York and surprised FreeFest fans simply by showing up. Clad in a ratty Megadeth T-shirt and blue-mirrored sunglasses, she seemed more poised than aloof during “Everything’s Embarrassing,” her mid-tempo heart-squeezer about vulnerability and falling in love

i guess the earnestness of her lifelong struggle to make this super quotidian post-teen angst record is fairly disarming, like ordinarily i might have just thrown it in the haim bonfire if it was anyone fresh n cute up in my grill

anyone really buying into the personal narrative here is a halfwit or at worst a creep though, this record is from the saturday girl behind the topshop till serving sky's stylist more so than she herself

dyl, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 16:02 (ten years ago) link

They put together some of these tracks very quickly, so "half-composed" and "under-composed" are definitely ... potential drawbacks. But part of what I like about the album is the way it can accommodate those loose, unfussy tracks -- songs like "Kristine," the ones that feel like they're just delighted to be able to hang around in their happy private space making noise and cooing to themselves.

i guess the earnestness of her lifelong struggle to make this super quotidian post-teen angst record is fairly disarming

The thing I find interesting about the whole narrative behind her isn't some cheerleading "girl against the industry" thing -- it's that she winds up with an experience that connects so perfectly with certain types of quotidian teen angst! I mean: feeling controlled, feeling like nobody takes you seriously, feeling like your peers all gossip about you, having people think your boyfriend may be bad news ... it's like central-casting young-person issues blown up to IMAX scale, or at least Sofia Coppola film scale. And she seems very young and self-dramatizing about it in a way that's considered uncool and messy for people in the public eye, but gives the music a lot more passion, I think.

EMA also OTM. none of these comparisons are exact, though, there is something spot-on that I can't think of and it is bugging me and there is a 33% chance it was on the buffy soundtrack or something

Omanko sounds like it belongs in the middle of a holiday comp on Darla Records or something. strip the vocals and knock the production values down a couple notches and I could imagine several tracks on any number of 90's indie labels. so yeah, I'm half way through and this is my album of the year.

fffv, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 01:38 (ten years ago) link

to me 'omanko' is like kim wilde via spacemen 3. 'kristine' kinda recalls jesus & mary chain. in both cases, partic the suicide vibes on them - check 'ain't your right' for that matter. 'boys' and 'nobody asked me...' are the more hole-ish imho.

^^ if on a rockist/indie centric ref map, i guess. not that it matters to me, tbh. don't remember EMA. pink, yeah.

also, i don't find it that dark.

There are some echoes of the past on this album, but it doesn't code as particularly 90s to my ears. If anything, it sounds expressly "2013." Maybe I just have a higher bar for artists/bands/songs to clear before they sound properly from another time, though.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 07:26 (ten years ago) link

Anyone else think the first three songs are by miles the weakest here? Just strangely plodding and... square. Like are you guys sure there's no Dev Hynes involvement in this record because those three tracks certainly have the songwriting flimsiness and primary school recorder lesson approach to rhythm that I associate with him, especially in the vocal lines.

Things pick up with the excellent Nobody Asked Me If I Was Okay though and it's way better from then on. There's something a bit 2006 about all this as well, those rockier synth bands who popped up post-Ladytron, post-electroclash, like The Sounds and people like that.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 09:36 (ten years ago) link

oh noes not the dev lurgies. idk those first three sound perfectly of a piece to me, surely occasional ploddingess is the very hallmark of sulky juvenilia? like even if his involvement were the case those are all looks he glommed off 90s ogs in the first place anyway so it's not an issue in this context really.

tbh without the groundwork laid down by those first three it's not even half the record imo, regardless of their individual quality

r|t|c, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 10:26 (ten years ago) link

like even if his involvement were the case those are all looks he glommed off 90s ogs in the first place anyway so it's not an issue in this context really

Examples or it didn't happen. I think this particular kind of ploddingness is a distinctly post-2000 phenomenon really, there's a lot more fire in the even the most generic of the 90s acts we're discussing.

Totally agree that the second half of this stronger, I actually think from Omanko onwards is just about perfect. The first five songs are good but seem throwaway compared to what comes later. Those first few songs in particular remind me of Ladyhawke (on her first album when she was almost great)

Serious album of the year contender for me already.

I think I just hate it when songwriters remove the slightest bit of rhythmic interest from vocal lines, like even the rhythm of natural speech patterns is removed, so it just sounds clumsy and awkward. It makes it difficult for me to rate any song that does that.

Matt DC, Thursday, 31 October 2013 11:50 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, there's a weird dead flat to the beat vocal craze going on at the moment. I think Losing You by Solange is the best example of this, it's sung at if it were quantized. If used well this vocal thing can be interesting but it often makes the track feel sterile. Part of the reason that Haim album is so fun is the top line melodies.

I've been listening to this a bunch over the past week and have decidedly mixed feelings about it. It is much more rockin' than I expected, which I enjoy, I like the sonics of the album overall. But I find myself getting worn down by her over-emphatic singing. Her vocals have a tendency to take the songs too far into the Emo zone when I'd prefer it if she went darker. She hits the nail on the head here and there, but mostly I just want her to tone it down a bit. The songs don't seem like they should be sung at the top of your lungs. They need a certain level of disconnection or aloofness to really work.

That being said, I'm clearly not the target demographic for this, so I may be way off base.

Well she's got a discography of released and unreleased material that alone could amount to maybe 2 full LPs excluding this one, so I'm not surprised that whatever sessions were behind this album potentially produced a ton of additional material.

She was great live, and the crowd really went nuts for her. The band setup was very rock, although they had some synth and sampled stuff, so the more rock-oriented album material worked really well -- "24 hours," "Heavy Metal Heart" and "Nobody Asked Me" all sounded great. "Lost In My Bedroom," which I love, didn't come across as well IMO. She didn't do "I Blame Myself." I was very impressed with how she sounded though.

Stage fright & vocal chord issues are by far the most annoying things I’ve ever had to deal with. #1 thing I’ve learned on this tour is alcohol doesn’t help you (by you, I mean me) be a better performer just because you feel numb for a bit. Self medicating is bullshit. Don’t let people pressure you into it so you can get the job done or whatever…In any situation. After it fades away you’re most likely going to feel worse than you did before. Anyways,my point is have fun. Don’t do shit because of anxiety/insecurity/depression. It doesn’t help or make any of those things go away. I’m telling you from experience. If anyone knows how to deal with stage fright HMU. This isn’t supposed to be preachy, just an observation I made about myself recently.

So, OK, on the b-sides disc, is the version of "Everything Is Embarrassing" the original (superior) version, or the album version?

Probably gonna buy just for the Unknown Mortal Orchestra remix, but the answer to the above question will mean the difference between going out to get it right now and putting it on my Amazon wishlist or some shit

Homo schaduwkabinet (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 00:05 (ten years ago) link

is omanko about orgasms? something about it has always scanned as her encapsulating "the orgasm" into a song. rhythmic, raw, the self-satisfied breathy vocals, the frantic drums towards its climax.

"Omanko" is apparently rude Japanese vernacular for ladybits, so, yeah, maybe? I'm working it into a (terrible!) mix right now; it sounds amazing slowed down just a little bit.

The Letterman performance sounded good but it seems like a backing track mostly takes over the vocal on the chorus?

St3ve Go1db3rg, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

yeah well i mean there are harmonies in the chorus. idk why her backing band wouldn't sing them tho, unless they don't sing.

dyl, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:59 (ten years ago) link

I think I can hear a faint harmony on the title phrase, but it's more the way the lead vocal sound totally changes in that whole section, like it's double tracked and very compressed (you can hear all the notes equally well), and it just doesn't sound live there where it does in the verses. I guess it could be just the way they're processing her vocal differently there, but it sounds odd to me. It doesn't offend me or anything, and I thought Sky's vocals sounded great when I saw her live, although "You're Not the One" did seem a bit rough, which is understandable because it's a difficult song to sing -- the vocals are very constant and full of long phrases. I just was a little surprised by what I was hearing in that clip as far as TV performances go, but maybe that's pretty normal?

St3ve Go1db3rg, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

ok, i see what you mean now. she has been inconsistent live in recent months (prob due to her stage fright and vocal injury) so maybe that was why they used the backing track for the chorus. she sounded good tho!

dyl, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

Yeah for sure, didn't mean to sound too harsh on her. I really enjoyed her live show.

The tension in the chorus of HMH = A+

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 25 January 2014 23:47 (ten years ago) link

I love "You're Not The One" but I feel like "Heavy Metal Heart" actually slightly improves on the formula, it's even more monolithic in that unstoppable and uncontrollable avalanche sense that both tunes go for, like this is not even humans playing instruments anymore, just a mudslide of instruments playing themselves.

That said "You're Not The One" does have those amazing "Hey!" shouts at the start of the pre-chorus.

Tim F, Sunday, 26 January 2014 00:25 (ten years ago) link

its the slight tension in the ynto pre chorus and how the words are so perfectly crammed that makes the release of the hook that much more explosive. love how the pre chorus before the last hook is just a slightly buried and more minor version of the hook so when it comes back in for the last time its scream-at-the-top-of-your-lungs worthy.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 14:30 (ten years ago) link

she came to radio 1 to be interviewed many times leading up to the uk release date so i think she was trying to get a song on the playlist there. since that never worked out it probably didn't really reach an audience beyond people who had already imported or pirated it months before.

dyl, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 14:36 (ten years ago) link

still can't believe territorial restrictions and lagging release dates are still things the music industry is ok with

lex pretend, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 14:39 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, there is zero reason for release dates to be staggered internationally for any album.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 15:14 (ten years ago) link

It sort of spoils the happy-ending narrative that even after she finally delivers a great record (a) she fucks up her first UK show and (b) the label cocks up the release date.

Weird that Radio 1 aren't biting.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 15:17 (ten years ago) link

i don't think her lack of live prowess necessarily has much to do with what she's able to create in the studio. the emphasis on performing live is a fact of the industry but it's become way disproportionate in assessing an artist.

The low charting isn't surprising in the sense that, as others have mentioned, a lot of people would have downloaded the album or bought it on import last year. But then again it was only released in Australia in January and it at least scraped the top 40 there. Strange also that Sky charted at #73 when a band like the War On Drugs, for instance, who I would assume don't have a huge a UK profile, made it to #18.

(i'd also note that this is instance no. 45,863 of someone essentially saying "a racist is the most hateful thing one can be, therefore i am not a racist." as many have pointed out, people seem to think that being called a racist for anything short of burning a cross in a black family's front lawn is a grave injustice. it's like popular discourse has effectively abolished the existence of more than a few token racists by positioning the concept of "racism" outside of the continuum of daily life.)

MikoMcha, Thursday, 17 April 2014 16:14 (ten years ago) link

A white female popstar juxtaposing her image against black bodies to indicate some kind of edginess? Must be a Thursday.

No, but this is so typical of the shit Miley, Britney, Madonna, etc. pull and have pulled that I can't even muster up more than casual annoyance. It's too tired to really be risible at this point. This kind of thing deliberately preys upon embedded racist notions of white womanhood and it's vicinity to stereotypes of black masculinity to generate a response. So I don't buy her claim that the fact of her as the lone white body in this video as the leader of an otherwise entirely black gang in a song where she sings "I blame myself for my reputation" is purely down to coincidence and only hiring the most qualified people to be in the video.

Though I must admit I enjoyed the random dance break in the midst of whatever the rest of that was.

yeah it's just a huge cliché at this point - i'm disappointed in it on two levels, one the racist tropes it plays into and two what a tired concept it is anyway. i don't get the impression she's trying to ~make a point~ which lessens the offensiveness slightly but makes it barely worth any interest. how hard is it to do a video that doesn't play up to clichés and stereotypes, good god

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 April 2014 16:33 (ten years ago) link

The worst part about this is that it was a totally unforced error. The actual song (which is really good!) doesn't in any way suggest this video. As much as she represents this as part of her grand vision, I can only imagine the record execs sitting around trying to come up with ideas that were "edgy".

Week-late OTM to this: people seem to think that being called a racist for anything short of burning a cross in a black family's front lawn is a grave injustice.

These things always end up with: I don't consider myself a racist and hate racism and have friends of many races therefore nothing I do can be considered racist in any way, end of discussion, byeeee. The idea that racism is so pernicious because it can be subconscious and doesn't only apply to skinheads with swastika tattoos just doesn't figure.

Ferreira says that she is re-teaming with producers Ariel Rechtshaid and Justin Raisen, who helmed the entirety of Night Time, My Time, and has gone back and forth with French DJ Gesaffelstein about finding some studio time for the new project. Last March, Ferreira also began collaborating with Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes of the iconic Scottish alt-rock group Primal Scream, and now describes Gillespie as a new mentor whom she communicated with throughout her tour.

“The reason I like working with them is because there’s absolutely no pressure,” she says of Innes and Gillespie, the latter of whom served as the drummer of Jesus and Mary Chain in the 1980’s. “It’s nice to walk in somewhere and they’re not like, ‘Okay, your label is harassing me about this and that.’ I set it up without anyone else involved, so we just sit and write in a room and there’s no pressure. It’s also just really cool talking to (Gillespie)! Jesus and Mary Chain is one of my favorite bands ever, so at first I was a little nervous. It’s really nice to meet with someone and not be disappointed by it, to have them meet every expectation.”

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 1 February 2016 19:33 (eight years ago) link

TBF this is probably better than any Primal Scream song in 15+ years, to the extent I'm wondering if Sky gave them the song. Either that or it was written by some Sumnerlike ringer. Bobby G has been overproduced which is usually the best way to deal with his voice.

Imagining these two interacting is kinda gross, you can just imagine Sky approaching it with transparent hero worship and Gillespie just lapping up the fact that a person under 30 actually likes Primal Scream as if that's proof of his inherent genius.

Although I remember "I Blame Myself" and "24 Hours" stuck out. Two months later, everyone knew every word and were begging her to play "I Blame Myself." It was awesome.

yeah I was pretty impressed with his guitar playing - that is a hard song to play. no indication in any of DIIV's music that he can play that well. her vocals sound good, too. but it is a heroin song, given the circumstances of the time, i get why it's dark.

Great cover - on record at least she's always had about twice the vocal presence and intensity of Aimee Mann, so it's no surprise that she plumbs something more from this obviously good song than fools like me ever knew was there.

SKY FERREIRA RETURNS: THE MASOCHISM INTERVIEW

With an uncompromising vision and the studio hours to back it up, the enigmatic singer is back with a new single—and a promise that her first album in six years will be worth the wait.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 20:40 (five years ago) link

Additionally, Sky is even more particular about her final mixes. She will only be satisfied after she’s evaluated her song in seven different listening contexts: a car stereo; a smartphone with “regular” headphones; a smartphone with Apple earbuds; a smartphone’s built-in speaker; on a laptop; through “really bad, bad computer speakers—like the ones that came with Dells back in the early 2000s”; and the lush splendor of the studio, which is a personal luxury because, as she notes, “most people aren’t gonna listen that way.”

that's basically how everyone who's mixed a song in the past 30 years works.

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 15:29 (five years ago) link

I'd guess the distinction there is that she's doing it (but also I've heard mixers hate artists who do this kind of thing)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 15:46 (five years ago) link

("this kind of thing" = being particular and/or perfectionist about the final mix)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 15:46 (five years ago) link

Strange to read about the whole perfectionism thing when the new track is sounding a lot like a demo to me. Like, the vocals seem lost in in the mix? I'm not a fan, TBH. Maybe my expectations were a little too high after Voices Carry, which sounds like a million times better than this.

daavid, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 15:51 (five years ago) link

Every engineer I've ever worked with recommended listening to mixes on a range of speakers.

This sounds much more polished than Voices Carry, but definitely has some deliberately dry sounding drums and vocals that maybe make it sound a bit rougher.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 15:58 (five years ago) link

Stunning song.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 16:59 (five years ago) link

oh, I mean, every engineer I've worked with listens to mixes on a range of speakers, I'm just struck by the disparity between how fans/music journalists view artists who do dozens/hundreds of takes (very positively) and how engineers do (very negatively)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:01 (five years ago) link

(I land on the "very positively" side myself)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:01 (five years ago) link

I suspect the more established the artist and bigger the recording budget, the more positively inclined an engineer might be.

Position Position, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 20:30 (five years ago) link

Additionally, Sky is even more particular about her final mixes. She will only be satisfied after she’s evaluated her song in seven different listening contexts: a car stereo; a smartphone with “regular” headphones; a smartphone with Apple earbuds; a smartphone’s built-in speaker; on a laptop; through “really bad, bad computer speakers—like the ones that came with Dells back in the early 2000s”; and the lush splendor of the studio, which is a personal luxury because, as she notes, “most people aren’t gonna listen that way.”

lmao iconic

It’s too bad this stuff couldn’t have just come out as an album as opposed to drop by drop. (There are probably extenuating circumstances for why, of course.) As a mass of tunes, there would be a different feel to things.

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 26 May 2022 10:09 (one year ago) link
