Ke$ha: Classic or Dud?

Why no Ke$ha thread? There's only Which Vaccuous Pop Irritant's "Influences" list is this?, and that one is chock full of gushing praise like "a whistleheaded pop irritant" and "i'm not surprised by her list, i'm surprised people actually listen to this hideous music she makes." and "Ke$ha's like a giant pile of crap on Mozart's face." THIS WILL NOT STAND!!!

Because I'm listening to Ke$ha's Animal album right now and I absolutely fucking love it. People go on and on about all the new girl pop stars out there, y'know the Katy Perrys, the Lady Gagas, the Hannah Montanas, the Avril Lavignes, the whoever it was that sang that "touch my man again and I'm-a fuck you up" song, but Ke$ha just destroys 'em. Destroys 'em! But you know what this album REALLY sounds like? (clears throat) "The Crush" by Annie!! (That was the non-album single she did with the Go-Gos revival sound where she sang "She don't know where to beGINNNNN!!") Ke$ha, obviously realizing what an awesome song that was, decided to make a whole album of "Crush"es. And "Tik Tok" is a GREAT SONG, people! I love it when she goes "oh oh oh OH!! oh oh oh OH!!" and I love it when she goes "Nuh-uh-uh-uh nuh nuh-nuh! NUH-NUH-NUH-NUH-NUHHH!!!!" in "Party at a Rich Dude's House." But what say you, ILM?

And in the Def Leppard have-a-catchy-chorus-and-then-have-an-even-catchier-chorus-as-the-refrain department, I count THREE catchy choruses in "Tik Tok":

1. "Pedicure on our TOES!! TOES!! Tryin' on all our CLOTHES!! CLOTHES!!..."
2. "Don't STOP. Make it POP. DJ blow my speakers UP. To-NIGHT..."
3. "Oh oh oh OH!! Oh oh oh OH!!"

there's a lot of animosity towards Kesha, not just here, I kinda get it and I kinda don't. Musically she's a lot like Katy Perry who hasn't been on the receiving end of nearly as much haterade so I assume most of it comes from the fact that she dresses like a homeless 90s club kid that makes people hate her so much.

Dinosaur is probably my favorite song off her album but minus that horrible horrible ballad it's pretty solid.

musically, Thursday, 15 April 2010 00:48 (fourteen years ago) link

"waking up in vegas" is better than any ke$ha song but "tik tok" is miiiiiiiiiiles better than any other KP joint -- perry's voice is just insufferable imo, and yes i find boilerplate autotune to be more pleasing

My big question for Ke$ha, if I ever receive the honor to speak with her, would regard the 200+ songs that were recorded during the 7-year period while she was recording "Animal." I need to know if there's any way I can have a copy of the 10 worst songs from those sessions as I'm sure this would be a remarkable CD.

http://www.scotusblog.com/2010/04/first-amendment-left-intact/

ok small point of order here:

On the broader question of what categories of expression should be put outside the First Amendment’s protection, Justice Alito argued that “crush videos” should not be shielded “because they are so closely linked with violent criminal conduct,” which itself gets no constitutional protection. He wrote: “The videos record the commission of violent criminal acts, and it appears that these crimes are committed for the sole purpose of creating the videos.” And, he added, Congress had before it “compelling evidence” that the only way to prevent the crime of animal cruelty was to target the sale of the videos — a perception that, Alito suggested, seemed to have been proven when the passage of the 1999 law led within a few years to destruction of the “crush video industry,” only to have it revive after the Third Circuit struck down that law.

Beatweek readers are still offering widely split opinions on what to make of Kesha’s recent avant garde Saturday Night Live performance of Tik Tok and Your Love Is My Drug – but the sales charts say she’s doing just fine. Her debut album Animal, which was released in January and debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Ten chart, has been catapulted back up into the top top, currently at #8. http://www.beatweek.com/news/4598-kesha-helped-on-charts-by-snl-performance/

Her metallic outfit and cape for "Tik Tok" and her black body suit covered in florescent paint for "Your Love" I guess constitutes avante-garde. Or maybe she's just going for a more MOR Lady Gaga approach.

maybe I'm just swayed by that influences list that annoyed Alex, but the visual stuff in her SNL performance just looked to me like a grab-bag of stuff you might get from, like, MGMT, Sia, Flaming Lips, old Daft Punk videos, etc.

(The performance struck me as terrible -- I like "Tik Tok" okay, I guess, and it just seemed like one of those moments where the pop star comes out seeming lifeless and silly and going-through-the-motions, totally unable to back up whatever feeling the recording created. Which is kinda embarrassing, since you could probably find someone in any given karaoke bar who could pull that song off better.)

Re: the Kesha music influences list.

It really isn't too surprising when you consider (and this culled from good friend Wikipedia) a) her parents are/were in the music business b) she's from L.A., specifically the Valley c) her family wasn't wealthy d) she was actually pretty studious and academic in high school

It really isn't too different from the filmmakers who grew up in the Valley, watched every movie at their local video store, and then later went on to have success as a director (Burton, P.T. Anderson, to name two)

I sorta think this is basically accurate (the vexation heaped on "homeless 90s club kid" look-and-feel) but to be fair, Katy Perry got/gets plenty of haterade on ILM! It's been a while but I seem to recall the original I Kissed A Girl thread throwing down some real negativity.

I think Ke$ha's problems boil down to, the songs are pretty good but the persona is galling. Right? Like, I want my dumb party pop songs to come from people who sound like you'd actually want to party with them. Except to the extent that Ke$ha is constantly promising casual sex in the near future, I can't imagine wanting to hang out with her - - - she comes off as loud, brassy in a bad way, full of herself, convinced she's funnier than she is, etc.... I mean these are basically the reasons I'm not so drawn to hang out with most 20-year-olds these days but really, her self-builtbrand is "sleazy, drunken moron." Sidekick version of Fergie on "London Bridge." Is it really surprising that there are people that this doesn't appeal to?

Also, I mean, the "$."

(This is all just going on the songs/videos - haven't seen any interviews or anything like that.)

still don't know how/why these exist, but the cooly g and untold remixes of "tik tok" lift the original out of "unlistenable garbage" into "interesting curio" territory (if not "actually amazing") - both are prob on autopilot-for-pay but it just shows how far you can go after a) removing some of the unnecessary autotune b) an actually interesting beat rather than rudimentary electrocrap c) treating ke$ha's vocals so that they're actually ON the beat rather than lurching around it.

god the wolf howls annoy the fuck out of me though

that example cover is terrible but actually better than the original

what's frustrating is that i genuinely think there's an effective, fun club banger hiding inside that song - it just needs to be played totally straight and robo-diva-voiced. where are the PCDs when you need 'em.

at first i didn't know what you were getting at w/ the canadian thing, but now that you explain it like that, i think you're OTM. it like she's going through the motions of being a big artist, when she's not really at that point yet.

there's a show on much right now called "disband," where they take a canadian band, make them work with a songwriter/producer in order to prep a song of theirs for a performance. they play that song live in front of said judges (mostly industry reps), and then they are told whether or not they should remain a band. it's quite entertaining to watch, but the bands that "win" go on to minor successes, and now there are around 2-3 that are just bombarding the airwaves. it's awful, because all they did was win a contest, but because they're canadian, they get an amount of play on the radio and on tv that's on par with some of the biggest american acts.

insane story here.
http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,741667,00.html

The "shouts" and "drops," the personal greetings from the stars, were as important as the money. The boy from Wesel insists that he never blackmailed a star, and so does Deniz. But the police are looking into charges of coercion, at least in the case of DJ Stolen. After all, he once bragged online that he had "blackmailed" singer Marques Houston, just like all the others who "sent me a shout." Now Deniz has changed his tune, saying that he was just showing off, and that none of it was true.

But how else is one to interpret what he wrote to US pop starlet Ke$ha? He also hacked into her computer, where he found photos of a breast operation, along with other photos that could destroy a career in the United States.

"Hey this is DJ Stolen from Germany. I just wanna let you know that i love you so fucking much," he wrote, adding that it would be nice to get a shout from her. Ke$ha apparently quickly understood how dangerous the situation was. This DJ Stolen had discovered her secret e-mail address, which meant that he might even have access to everything that was in her mailbox. Her response reflected her concern. Sure, she wrote, she would love to record a shout for him, as long as he didn't do anything with her private photos. "We should be friends," she wrote, adding: "i'll send you whatever drops as soon as you need em! What exactly do you want them to say?" Deniz A. replied: "Yo whatup you already know it's ya girl Kesha and I'm in love with my boy --- DJ Stolen." In return, he promised to keep her photos to himself. But just in case she tried to find him, he added, he had enough material to embarrass her in front of the whole world.

I sat next to pretty heavy-hitter industry VIPs, who said the "heat" on Ke$ha was nuts right now. "Heat" being a euphemism for number of people trying to get tickets. But most of all she was having such a blast it was hard to hate on her. Oh, she sang, too. Dropped most of the autotune trickery live. Now, she doesn't have much of a voice, but at least she made an effort, and the songs were much less annoying live than they are on record. Encore was "Fight For Your Right to Party" rapped by a guy dressed like Santa while Ke$ha and her dancers smashed said pinata.

punk is massively more important for how it changed the way ppl approached music than it is for the perceived quality of the music it produced, so dismissing it with "punk sucked" doesn't actually work if you want to have a serious conversation

the tax avocado (DJP), Thursday, 22 September 2011 20:45 (twelve years ago) link

god i have party at a rich dude's house in my head and it makes me so happy

lex, k's voice occasionally lacks the "grating"ness esp in her ballads, though her ballads are typically her worst ones. her voice is actually v versatile (even without autotune!) and she has some impressive range.

do her vox in "animal" bother you? they're pretty pretty, very clean, and the song is fantastic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBGCSTvLdNE

also "c u next tuesday" is as vocally non-grating as it gets tho the song as a whole isn't v good. "the harold song" is her best ballad (one of her best songs imo) but the chorus gets screamy. the verses are still wonderful and make me tear up. i'm trying to find a good comparison to what her voice sounds like/what she does with it when she gets softer, but all i can think of is "celtic." i know there's a point of reference somewhere but it's not coming to me.

would be remiss to forget "stephen" if we're talking about clean vox, but i know you hate the autotune.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

this just sounds like another Dr. Luke track. was Dr. Luke involved with "Good Feeling"? it sounds like that. somewhat surprising that lack of prominent autotune neither works for or against it.

anyway, it's kind of nice.

Kind of reminds me of Starships, which is probably the only song of the last year or so that will get more play at DC gay places than this.

skip, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

Heard the new one for the first time on the radio today right after that awful Owl City/CRJ song. It started off sounding basically exactly the same, and then there was a chorus about dying young and I was like whaaa and then I realized it was Ke$ha and it was almost like an antidote to the song I had just heard. I like it.

lot more mixing up her K$ party side and the 'animal'-type stuff within songs, but overall it's a pretty solid album, i think.

i think people are afraid to admit to like ke$ha for some reason, she is less respectable than other pop stars. but Warrior is really solid. c'mon, especially, is pretty awesome. it captures adolescent "yearning" much better than any of the katy perry songs that, i think, go for a similar effect. the problem is that every ke$ha song has at least a few especially dumb lyrics that don't succeed in being charming. good thing i am able to zone out and not hear the lyrics pretty easily...

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 19:13 (nine years ago) link

I... can't, with this. But I wish her all the success in the world with her case. What she's been through sounds horrifying enough, (but yeah, I cringe at what's to come.)

luke countersuing & claiming extortion

But in Luke’s lawsuit … he says the pack of lies is being engineered by Kesha’s mother, Pebe, and Kesha’s new management firm. Luke claims Kesha tried to extort him by threatening to spread lies about him to a blogger who started a “Free Kesha” website unless he released her from her recording contract.

And Luke says in his lawsuit he’s had a copy of a draft of Kesha’s new abuse lawsuit for months, and she was threatening to file it if he didn’t release her. In other words, he’s alleging more extortion.

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

Yeah that did get ugly fast. Kesha's claims seem believable, though, and if they're true it'd be interesting to learn if this was part of a pattern of nasty behavior from Dr. Luke.

I have a lot of respect for Kesha. It seems like she's making a concerted effort to clean herself up, fix the things that are making her unhealthy and unhappy, etc, and that's hard for somebody to do in her position. Seems like this is part of that push so I wish her the best

Evan R, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 19:26 (nine years ago) link

xp will be curious if this gets pursued criminally, seems like there would need to be more/some? hard evidence

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 19:38 (nine years ago) link

Most of these allegations seem hard to prove but (speculation) winning the lawsuit might not be Kesha's goal here; Luke's lawyers are alleging she's just trying to escape her contract with him—which, if any of these allegations are true, who could blame her

Evan R, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 19:48 (nine years ago) link

if she wants out she should let him go, clearly there can't be a working relationship anymore so if she's suing to get out of her deal that must mean that he's being unnecessarily vindictive in either asking her to fork over a bunch of money and/or threatening to hold her career hostage. seems like supporting evidence in her favor imo.

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 19:51 (nine years ago) link

A far cry from a mentor, Dr. Luke displayed despicable conduct in front of Ms. Sebert. Specifically, Dr. Luke would boast and brag to Ms. Sebert about how he liked to take girls out on a first date and "___" them in the ass."

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 19:53 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, J0rdan otm. I don't know the details of her contract, but one of the many reasons I'm inclined to believe her is that her partnership with Luke has been so fruitful (and his production/songwriting has been so key to her success) that I don't think there's sound business logic for splitting from him. Splitting from him to escape an unhealthy situation makes more sense; she's burning a very lucrative bridge

Evan R, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 19:55 (nine years ago) link

It would be ironic if Dr Luke of all people tried to use her lyrics against her in the media perceptions battle - though probably still unsurprising.

does the preliminary injunction thing mean that she can still win the case in the long run? someone smart help me out here.

Captain Maximus, Saturday, 20 February 2016 05:05 (eight years ago) link

Kind of. The preliminary injunction would have allowed her to record elsewhere (i.e., not for Sony) while the case is still pending. The underlying case, for rape/abuse etc., she can conceivably still win. Though there are also counterclaims against her, for defamation/extortion, etc., that she could theoretically lose.

Her argument in favor of the injunction, though, was that the window for success in pop music is so narrow that to delay recording opportunities is effectively to deny them.

dc, Saturday, 20 February 2016 13:51 (eight years ago) link

"commercially reasonable" ughhh

katherine in that 2011 link you posted it says that sony's deal with dr luke is a five-year one, which means that it must be up for renewal...this year? could that affect anything?

cher guevara (lex pretend), Saturday, 20 February 2016 14:20 (eight years ago) link

My understanding is that, while the five-year deal awarded Sony exclusive rights to Dr. Luke's work as a producer, that division of Sony (Kemosabe) is basically his to run indefinitely. Allowing him to start producing for nonSony artists again (if that happens) is not likely to affect Kesha's contract.

dc, Saturday, 20 February 2016 14:52 (eight years ago) link

Not that I support the decision, but I think the judge was in a difficult place here. If there isn't any evidence that Dr. Luke committed a crime, granting Kesha the preliminary injunction sets a terrible precedent and is essentially saying that all an artist has to do to get out of a contract they don't like is to allege an assault.

I hate the outcome because the bar to proving assault for women is already impossibly high. But I think Geragos didn't help matters by dragging Lady Gaga into this – that's a disclosure for Lady Gaga to make, not a celebrity lawyer.

Whole thing is ugly. Hopefully more evidence comes out or other women to support Kesha's case.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 20 February 2016 15:47 (eight years ago) link

do judges in cases like this really set precedents, though? i'm not a lawyer and i have no idea how shit works but it just reminds me so much of things lawyerly inclined leftie friends have said about the legal system and rape, which aligns with everything i've ever heard from non-lawyerly people about the legal system and rape, like basically everything is set up to not believe the victim. i mean she is basically being compelled to either work with, or substantially enrich, her rapist and abuser. so horrible.

shandemonium padawan (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 20 February 2016 16:17 (eight years ago) link

It's correct that trial-level judicial opinions do not set legally binding precedent that another trial-level court would be obliged to follow. However, a trial-level opinion in Kesha's favor would be considered "instructive" and could conceivably inspire similar suits.

dc, Saturday, 20 February 2016 16:31 (eight years ago) link

Right, okay.

Ugh.

It's also just... I mean I get that the law works in its own way and you can't always mete out the most just decision because of the way the thing works and so on. It just lines up so much with the thinking of, y'know, oh all women really want to go out and make up a fake assault to get attention/whatever. Not saying that was the judge's mentality (and certainly not saying it's yours!), just in a different culture that would be so obviously a drop in the bucket versus actual victims being contractually bound to their abusers. The whole thing's just depressing as hell, I know years ago in this thread I was pretty dismissive of her but I just can't even imagine being in her position.

shandemonium padawan (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 20 February 2016 16:35 (eight years ago) link

This is obviously anecdotal, but during my yearlong judicial clerkship working on mostly criminal cases after law school, I never saw a jury return a guilty verdict in a rape case. Not once.

dc, Saturday, 20 February 2016 16:43 (eight years ago) link

Granted, this was in Baltimore, where an understandably deep distrust of the justice system makes it difficult to get jurors to return a guilty verdict on anything. But still.

I think there’s a position in-between, contracts should address tangible assets (e.g. recorded albums) rather than future earnings.

Most importantly, a "good" contract should be equitable and mutually beneficial.

music industry is notorious for exploitative contracts

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:12 (eight years ago) link

A standard music industry contract (I used to work for a label) is seven albums, with the artist getting a higher advance for each subsequent album, but after each album the label has the option to renew or not. So if Sony lets Kesha make another album, and it tanks, they can drop her and she can go work with whoever will work with her.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 20 February 2016 19:51 (eight years ago) link

The objection is that Sony could deliberately stall her career by not releasing or promoting any records she makes.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Saturday, 20 February 2016 19:59 (eight years ago) link

i think the injunction hearing yesterday was about deciding whether or not the court could take the possibility of kesha working with dr. luke again off the table legally

sony and luke's label kemosabe have apparently agreed to allow kesha to work with other non-luke writers and producers but team kesha argues that sony will decline to properly promote/fund collaborations with other producers unless the court insists that luke is legally removed from the table as an option

exploitative contracts and NDA agreements cover up a lot of abuses in the industry, something that might help here is if there was some kind of artist/performer's bill of rights which specifies that recording contracts and non-disclosure agreements can be voided in cases where abuses like this happen

james brooks, Saturday, 20 February 2016 20:30 (eight years ago) link

Seems like Sony/Kemosabe should release her from contract on their own volition at this point.
Is whatever they gain in not doing so really worth all of the (rightfully) negative chatter?
Do they really imagine future Kesha delivering hit after hit for them, glad-handing on tv, operating like this never happened?

What can they possibly gain from this?
Seems only sensible to dissolve the contract and move on.

(Judge) Kornreich, who denied Kesha’s bid to get out of her Sony contract binding her to Dr. Luke earlier this year, wasn’t sympathetic.

“Every rape is not a gender-motivated hate crime,” she wrote.

“Although Gottwald’s alleged actions were directed to Kesha, who is female, (her claims) do not allege that Gottwald harbored animus toward women or was motivated by gender animus when he allegedly behaved violently toward Kesha.”

The judge dismissed Kesha’s claim of intentional infliction of emotional distress based on the statute of limitations with respect to the alleged assaults in 2005 and 2008.

And Kornreich, in bluntly cold language, implied the insults allegedly hurled at Kesha over the years weren’t severe enough for the court to act on them.

“Her claims of insults about her value as an artist, her looks and her weight are insufficient to constitute extreme, outrageous conduct intolerable in civilized society,” she wrote.

‘Kinky’ and ‘BFF’ were both ones I’d lose tbh, but the rest are wonderful. The ‘Island in the Sun’-reminiscent intro has me fantasising a Kesha-Weezer super gig. ‘Tonight’, the title track and ‘Birthday Suit’ are immediate faves and I feel guilty for dismissing ‘Raising Hell’ earlier in the year what was I thinking.

I like this new album so much more than Rainbow tbh

my feelings on this album will hinge on whether there's a 'rainbow' or a 'spaceship' equivalent probably

i don't think either is present, but the album's offering other pleasures

maybe i love "kinky" bc it'd be a pretty sick k-pop song

this album handles its pop moves better than rainbow (cf. the run from "tonight" to "honey" vs. "hymn" -> "praying" -> "learn to let go," the former is better to me on just a pacing level) but rainbow is still the weedier and weirder of the two? but then again high road has "the potato song," which seems to follow up on "rich straight white men" and take kesha further into the alt universe amanda palmer territory (which is fine with me, she's a good enough songwriter to pull it off) and then there's "father daughter dance" the most devastating thing she's ever put on a record? idk, both records are all over the place

i would prob think "bff" was ok if wrabel were deleted from it
