Which Vaccuous Pop Irritant's "Influences" list is this?

Okay, so over the weekend, I spotted a picture of a current pop sensation (no, not Lady Gaga) wearing a t-shirt with the VOID insignia on it. I was deeply incredulous that a whistleheaded pop irritant like _____ dared sully Void's good name with her vileness. Upon sharing this revelation with a colleague this morning, he answered: "Dude, check out her MySpace page ... she likes good music." I find it imposible to believe that a child capable of making such awful pop would be fan of decent music, but check out her list of "influences" and see if you can guess who I'm talking about:

Kinda think you're overestimating how important 'appealing to the indie audience' is here, tbh

List is sort of weird but does read to me like one person's hypothetical taste in music - reminds me of quite a lot of ppl I know who are basically 'indie' but not by design so much as their tastes just... gravitated that way

Y'know what I think it is that's so upsetting about Shania wearing Ramones and AC/DC shirts? It's that she herself is nothing but a sparkless careerist. Based on her press, she's has nothing but contempt for her audience and positively LOATHES being a "public person." Beyond that, her music is completely inconsequential, banal and rife with the same amount of meaningless cliché that plagues, say, the Corrs! Meanwhile, whether you appreciate them or not, the Ramones and AC/DC are artists who have *INSPIRED* people. There are more bands that were spawned in the wake of these two giant names than Shania could ever hope to affect. The Ramones and AC/DC inspire *PASSION* in their fans, whereas Shania merely manufactures fucking PRODUCT and shifts units to consumers who clearly don't have very high musical standards (does this make them subhuman? No, just that music doesn't interest them). Therefore, it is offensive to folks who *DO* take music seriously (whether you think that's silly or not) that Shania is limply trying to imply some affinity/appreciation for individuals who actually make music of quality. I doubt Shania even enjoys music to begin with.

Ms. SEBERT: It was close - 1500. I was, like, very studious. I was actually in the international baccalaureate program, in AP, I, like, loved physics and math and I was in the marching band. And then after that practice I would drive to Belmont - it's a college in Nashville - and just for fun listen in on Cold War history classes. Just 'cause I just think it's so interesting.

And I was so curious kind of about all that I ended up taking my first solo trip to Cuba. So point being: I was very studious and really curious about a lot of things that are much deeper than, you know, partying and dancing.

Also I suspect when lady pop stars wear t-shirts w/ logos of bands they probably don't care for, it's less an attempt at edginess than just because they have logos that look good

Markelby's Greasy Spoon (DJ Mencap), Monday, 15 March 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Interestingly, not many of these apparent influences make the list:

One of the benefits of the half-talk-half-rap delivery she uses for many of her verses is that it’s infinitely plastic; she can adopt any tone, apply any level of sarcasm or referentiality. At various times throughout the album I thought I heard Kim Gordon, Moon Unit Zappa, Johnnette Napolitano, Debora Iyall (Romeo Void), Deborah Evans-Stickland (Flying Lizards), Kathleen Hanna, and Laurie Anderson. Which if you’re trying to make a list of feminist forebears is about as good as you can hope for, and I hope I’m not just hallucinating the similarities. (Definitely not with Laurie Anderson.)

last year Miley Cyrus made a big deal of wanting to meet Radiohead at the Grammys, and a few months later said that she's never heard a Jay-Z song and doesn't listen to pop music. I think general cynicism about pop music is so widespread that even the people that make it, especially the young singers, are just kind of dismissive of what they do and try to make sure everyone knows they like much cooler music than the stuff they get rich off of.

some dude, Monday, 15 March 2010 15:26 (fourteen years ago) link

and I guess ostensibly having a bunch of pop stars with cool underground influences would make pop more interesting, but instead I think them being so divorced from what they do, taking songs they don't like from producers/songwriters and just kind of going through the motions with them (and maybe later doing a 'difficult' record once their career's already on the wane), is just a huge drag.

Vevo’s ‘Area Codes’ features Kesha “Ke$ha” Sebert in Nashville (615). The 22-year-old talks about life in a tour bus, having weird influences because her mom wrote country music and her brother listened to punk rock, having a “redneck dumpster diving chic” fashion sense, and fulfilling a fantasy by debuting her video at a tranny bar in Nashville.

It looks like they didn't even bother to remove the duplicate entries from the two lists. The lower-case list does look like the kind of thing someone might attach to their own list in order to ward off indie-blogger disdain. But this is all speculation - maybe the same person did write both lists.

I guess I'm specifically thinking about Ke$ha here, only insofar as what I know of her image seems to be very deliberately created and the notion that she would make a point of telling the world she digs, like, the Vaselines and Optiganally Yours seems to be at odds with it? Personally, I more offended by the fact that it's Eric Singer wearing Peter Criss' make-up in the pic above than I am by Gene Simmons pressing the flesh with a stockbroker. Gene Simmons being an avaricious jackass is not breaking news.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 00:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I do think it's true that a list of favorites means something different to younger people than it does to older people -- sometimes the items refer less to in-depth long-term fandom and more to just liking something from/about an act. I mean, older people will do this with pop music, where saying "I love Stacey Q" might just mean you love "Two of Hearts" -- if you're young and on the internet a lot of stuff can work that way! An internet like a giant radio where you can love an act for whatever part of them you come across.

Plus I don't even want to get into anything about whether she can "actually" like stuff like this, but I'm not even sure there's that radical of a disjunction between most of those tastes and singing this variety of pop song! I mean, this tends to be abundantly clear to us the other way around: you'd never be surprised that Jim O'Rourke might like HER, would you? Or that I like loads of things on that list but would be reasonably impressed with myself to have made some of her music?

yeah i mean...probably everyone on this board has a few favorite artists that noone would be able to guess just looking at a picture or meeting briefly, but there's always this feigned shock when famous people like less predictable stuff -- the old 'omg a rapper likes Coldplay!' thing -- as if they're not capable of the same dimensions as us. it's pretty hypocritical and condescending imo, to have hugely diverse listening tastes and then be skeptical of people who are young or pretty or rich or famous or just not on message boards all day having the same capacity.

I agree, it's not going to be every teenager, or even a majority of them. But even 15 years ago when I was in high school, I knew girls from the cheerleading squad or the basketball team who would listen to Clash and OpIvy records. Sometimes people can be normal/preppy/popular and still be well-rounded or have eclectic tastes.

With Kesha, you have a performing-arts-oriented woman in her mid-twenties who comes from a punk rock family, so I don't think the list is at all inappropriate.
