Hooray! I bought 'DI Go Pop' today for $16 (Australian - pretty cheap!) So let's celebrate with a thread on this band.

Thoughts after first listen: this is CLASSIC. These guys did post-rock the right way - they built on MBV's innovations and went further out of the realm of rock, without going all dull and small and characterless like most Tortoise and Trans Am. It's not electronica though - doesn't groove, it vibrates and wavers. Great mixture of sick noise and pretty noise. Reminded me of a more serious Position Normal at one point. Skewed melodies create a great mixture of sad/nostalgic and fucked-up/disturbing, a confusing feeling evoked by a lot of great 90s music eg Boards of Canada.

What does everyone else think? And what other DI stuff is worth getting?

I just downloaded 'The Last Dance' - beautifully Go-Betweensy.

the Summers Last Sound/Love Stepping Out ep is ESSENTIAL!

Is it easy to come by in this day and age? I've wanted to hear it for years and feel a trip to Berwick Street coming on.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'It's A Kid's World' is also worth tracking down. (Iggy's 'Lust For Life' used to interesting effect even pre-Trainspotting!)

rh, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah Keith, you wise good man you. ;-) I could go on, but suffice to say I'll bring you a burned copy of the EPs when I visit Melbourne in September if you like.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was fortunate to find DI Go Pop in the states, and now I can't imagine a world without it. Anyone who has the post-In Debt singles or a comp. thereof, please contact me!!

, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic!

I've not heard everything yet (even the mighty Audiogalaxy didn't have all the DI Go Pop era b-sides) But I love DI GO Pop, and Technicolour has its moments.

I've never thought about it before, but the Position Normal comparison definitely strikes a chord, I'll have to listen to that album again.

PS. Ned: You should have a CD winging its way to you at the moment, looking forward to hearing the missing B-Sid

chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaaarrrrgghh! I've been posting here for years and I still forget to add a couple of returns after my last sentence to stop Greenspun cutting off.

This is definitely one "feature" I don't want to see on nu-ILx!

chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks Ned!!! :) :)

Could someone help me? I'm trying to upload the first four sampler-era EPs onto disc, but apparently "The LONG Dance" isn't formatted correctly and I can't fix the formatting on it over on this computer (I'd have to go back home to do that). Could someone send a YSI of the song to me that's formatted correctly so I can finally burn it onto disc and clear some space on my very old 12 gig computer at home? Thank you in advance!

The guitar's entrance (I think it's a guitar) during In Sharkey Water sounds identical to music that plays when Shredder faces off with the turtles in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie. I'd YSI but sound recorder says my sound card is busy or something so I can't cut from the song. Anyone know what I'm talking about though?

Cunga (Cunga), Saturday, 24 September 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

I still feel terrible guilt that I don't have all those EPs everyone keeps talking about. I do have Summers Last Sound/Love Stepping Out and think it's fab. In Debt is one of my favourite albums (uh...CD's) of all time. But DI Go Pop! leaves me scratching my head. Are these EPs more like that or like the former?

There's a Tipsy Ghost on the edge of my couch (Bimble...), Saturday, 24 September 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

Not really like In Debt but most of them are closer to Summers Last Sound/Love Stepping Out than D.I. Go Pop (the album tracks that sound most like the e.p. tracks are probably "New Clothes For The New World" and "A Whole Wide World Ahead", I reckon)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 24 September 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

When I first bought D.I go Pop in 07 after much ILM hype I didn't get it, like if Bark Psychosis couldn't play their instruments or whatever (actually the word "dated" crossed my mind!), but then I took it for a walk in my headphones once and since then it has grown on me like mad. CLASSIC!!!

Now I want to hear everything this band recorded... obviously there's some more studio recordings, but are there any good live albums/bootlegs? Would be really cool to hear what they did with this live.

After a chance appearance on shuffle play, I have to ask

Disco Inferno: great band or THE GREATEST BAND?

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 13 February 2009 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

Oh the latter. Which song?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 February 2009 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

alright on the real i finally need to get something by these guys, i can only avoid them because of the dumb name for so long, the descriptions of them sound way awesome.

Drop me an email.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 February 2009 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

as much as i love the eps to death, they're like little embryos. i really think the masterpiece is di go pop. for me it's where crause's lyrical vision and sonic ambition ultimately manifested. in a horrible horrible disgusting would not wish this upon anyone way it kinda makes sense that they lost all their equipment after this record. the album title makes so much sense, this tiny burst of ephemeral technicolour beauty.

rio (r1o natsume), Friday, 13 February 2009 01:46 (seventeen years ago)

sorry to get all wanky, but this album is better than tusk to me

rio (r1o natsume), Friday, 13 February 2009 01:47 (seventeen years ago)

better than sulk even

rio (r1o natsume), Friday, 13 February 2009 01:47 (seventeen years ago)

Oh the latter. Which song?

"It's A Kid's World."

More to the point, it appeared in the following context:

Amon Düül II "Soap Shop Rock"
The Innocence Mission "You Draw The Streets Of Rome"
Disco Inferno "It's A Kid's World"
Yes "Yours Is No Disgrace"
Goldfrapp "Ride A White Horse"

Å few press photos were published in Melody Maker alongside the occasional story or review, but that's about it...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 1 August 2009 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

I was just thinking about it last week and I see it's been mentioned upthread but are there any DI live recordings available anywhere?

willem, Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:12 (sixteen years ago)

Eh, figured as much, Ned. Seems as various NZ libraries only have 2000s-ish issues or the digital versions of 1997+ issues. Hrm.

From an interview with one of the guys from No Age on Pfork this morning, regarding new album influences:

Pitchfork: Is there any brighter, more poppy music you have been listening to lately that might be having an influence?

RR: Yeah, actually. The Go-Betweens have been on rotation. They have a really interesting sort of sound collage. That and this band Disco Inferno have been two references for us in a lot of ways. There's a fun-ness in there. Disco Inferno is really heavily sample-based, but still has this pop element. There's this record D.I. Go Pop that I have been listening to a lot during the creation of this.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

Hmm! We'll have to see, I guess.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

really? "fun-ness" is the last word i'd use to describe di go pop

anita bonghit (rionat), Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

There's no problem. I mean, I'd do the same thing myself. I just won't be bidding anytime soon. No doubt there's folks out there who don't know about the repressing who will go apeshit...

I've still only got In Debt the Meat Puppets play Joy Division cd.
I saw them play the White Horse Hampstead in like '91 with the Whipping Boy. Very young guys with custom made instruments & that was before the sample triggering instruments I think.
Were pretty good. Che had good taste in the artists they released.
They were the label that pretty much launched Bark Psychosis too.
(I know BP played my old school, I think after I left. Played a school assembly, I assume with the same drummer Mark though i don't think he attended the same school. But that's Bark Psychosis not DI)

One of my favourite moments in music is that bit in "The Long Dance" towards the end and immediately after Crause sings "... but now my eyes point ahead / away from the ghosts of the dead", where the arrangement seems to warp and flex with this burbling that feels like the emergent guitar solo literally pushing its way through the surface of the song. And then the guitar solo does arrive and it's so impossibly happy and sad at the same time, it really captures the intermingled sense of hope and hopelessness the song tackles lyrically, the former so frail and chimeric, a flickering flame you have to protect because what other option do you have.

I have no idea whether the band ever listened to Fleetwood Mac but the structure of the song and the function and feel of the solo remind me a lot of e.g. "Gypsy" or "Eyes of the World".

(this is broadly true of "The Last Dance" as well, but the extended version really leans into the above so satisfyingly)

Tim F, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 00:36 (two years ago)

A fascinating comparison and not inapt. That they could so easily sit on the break between then and now in multiple ways still astonishes me.
