Super excited for this, more so than the albums poll. Apart from Taylor Swift and Gaga both of whom I imagine will split votes over different songs, there didn't seem to be anything nearly as well-liked across the board as "American Boy" or "A Milli" or "Happy House" this year so I'm totally curious to see which tracks made it.

For me, it's totally the atmospherics, the dreamy textural stuff. I mean, my favourite moment is about 4:50 in Graphics, where the drum machine goes into New Order mode and that weird echoey NOISE goes off like an alarm as all the fuzzy sounds tinkle all around like wind-up birds gone wrong.

Trainer-squeak hooks, disco, big earnest 80s vibe, especially in the vocals, that shine& the lightness in the rhythm; the rhythm is so different and flat on those bands. Only heard a handful of stuff by each but I would never have thought about them in the same sense as Stop Talking.

saw Memory Tapes last week and they were okay - don't know the album well enough yet - occasionally brilliant but seemed to cut their set short for no apparent reason and didn't say anything to the crowd oh well. Bicycle is fucking great.

blueski, did you see them at The Luminaire or at The Social? I saw them at the Social and thought, for a guy who pretty much hates going out and is a bit of recluse, inspite of the sprightlyness of his music - they did a solid job.

i mean i've not heard mgmt i like half as much xp

I've said this before but the "Dull Life"/"Shame and Fortune"/"Runaway" section is my favorite part of the album; I often play that sequence in isolation as if it were an encapsulated EP.

The country-adjacent-ness of Hysteric really stand out in the Acoustic Version from the Deluxe Edition of It's Blitz, which adds a counter-melody on the fiddle. And yeah, I know it's the same thing as a violin, but it codes "fiddle" in my mind.

woa, yes, on the hook there, and suddenly the hook is much easier to take in the simple arrangement where the melody carries everything. But barring the hook and coda, the og arrangement is still nicer i think, with the singer pitching amid the guitars just marred by that one lyric. thanks for that.

49 (Kid Cudi) - Forksclovetofu OTM. Wake me up when the guy singing the song wakes up.

48 (Animal Collective) - nice overall sound, lyrics seem promising, gawd the effect on that guy's voice is really annoying though! I should check out this band more.

47 (Elektrik Red) - OK, this is nice. Kind of wanders all over the place but I like that. Not the best hook I've ever heard but great beat - could def. have a great time dancing to this.

46 (Memory Tapes) - not as soporific as Kid Cudi. If this was playing in a record store I'd ask what it was and then immediately forget. Seems to go interesting places as it meanders along but not really my kinda thing.

45 (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) - hey, this is nice! Probably the nicest-sounding thing I've heard by this band - I eventually warmed up to "Maps" and have a soft spot for "Gold Lion" but this is a better use of their bag of tricks I think. If Gold Lion was them realizing they should sound more like an alt-rock band covering "Play That Funky Music White Boy," this is them realizing they should sound more like Coldplay and I'm sold - great fucking chorus.

44a (Fever Ray) - i was with them on the big orbiting evil synth sounds but is this a comedy band? why do their vocals sound like Gregorian monks going on about Wookies? Next please.

44b (Basement Jaxx) - oh hell yeah! This is really cool. I should check these guys out more, I've liked basically everything I've heard by them and the chorus on this is just killer, closest thing I've heard from a non-mashup artist (I think?) to the Girl Talk payoff of a bunch of shit banging together to release your favorite song for the hook.

42 (Guido) - that there's a discussion over which sub-post-genre this belongs to is probably a sign that this isn't for me - I always stumble on these acts which as far as my brain is concerned get filed under Electronic. I like the synth sounds in this but I lose touch quickly when there's no vocals. I would probably get a lot more done if I liked music like this more. Toe-tapper though.

41 (Pill) - really liking this. Did he just say he's got pies flying at the sky?! I appreciate how the mix NEVER lets up, there's always this tension-inducing layer of buried yelling and stuff underneath the plinky-plonky sounds which are under the dude rambling about pies and the intermittent Beastie Boys sample. I genuinely have no clue what any of this is about but I'm feeling it.

a couple reactions to DC's reactions: i think the casual vibe of the Kid Cudi's vocals go perfectly with music, the flatness and simplicity of his delivery highlights the music, whereas more aggressive or bombastic vocals would put the focus on his "rapping" and wouldn't serve the song as well imo (though this just might be my predilection for dance music over rap talking.) can't even begin to see the appeal of that Basement Jaxx song. you should give Fever Ray's album a chance, i think that song is a bizarre choice as a single as it doesn't make much sense to me separated from the album; i'm gonna go ahead and predict that her album will top the ILX album poll or come close.

I think I would sort of give the Kid Cudi thing a pass if the hook had a little more going on. Not my sorta thing overall, I guess - too laid-back for me to find anywhere to exist in the song. (But I do prefer rap talking to dance music so maybe this guy is just a good litmus test for that.)

always forget that one of my favourite parts of these threads is seeing the reactions of people who didn't hear these songs before! guido and pill, my first two votes, great tracks.

"way u make me feel" was the b-side of "orchestral lab", which is just as beautiful - have pretty much always listened to them back to back. guido's got such a strong sense of melody and ability to evoke emotion. not gonna clutter up this thread w/youtubes but if you like that, definitely check out "orchestral lab", "cat in the window" (knife sharp strings), "beautiful complication" as mentioned earlier and this excellent article on guido's little bristol scene.

oh yeah for anyone hearing "so good" for the first time off that youtube clip, the best thing about the album version is how much swearier it is. "i thought i wouldn't really give a fuck / but now a bitch all in love" = line of the year.

really like that fever ray track - easily the best tune on the album too. was never a knife fan, so it took me a while to check FR out. glad I did.

second-best thing so far is kid cudi, but I too find the vocals really dreary and have to tune him out.

not much beyond that tickles me, but trap goin' ham is pretty forthright.

low rating for a track which seemed big out there on the internets. this and "Exhibit C" came out late in the year and seemed to appeal to not just the usual suspects who follow rap releases but also older heads who've given up checking for new rap and generalist music fans. I guess because they're quite traditional sounding in production, it felt like these were huge consensus records.

agreed^ "if i had a heart" is great for setting the atmosphere of the album, but as far as being an actual song it seems really slight. someone said upthread that it was by far their favorite song on the album and i'm just like O_o are we listening to the same album?

i got to love "if i had a heart" as an individual track b/c i had to, before the album was released; it's popped up in a few dj mixes too (notably dixon's excellent temporary secretary) and its steady pulse means it works really well there. also, it's secretly very catchy indeed (which "when i grow up" isn't, at all, for me).

that's true, it works surprisingly well on that dixon mix, sped up a little; though it does play a similar role as an atmospheric tone-setter

i could buy that he has 20 better verses but definitely not 20 better songs, and certainly not better singles. it felt like an instant classic to me because the chorus is so anthemic. "lemonade" is great but it doesn't have the wide-appeal sloganeering of "party, party, party let's all get wasted"

man, comparing it to "party like a rockstar" is selling it short as hell (whiteboy fetishizing in the video excepted). the "party like a rockstar" chorus is just them repeating the title over and over, whereas "wasted" -- as is the norm for tons of gucci songs -- has a chorus that is as wordy as it is catchy, and is inventive because of that. i think it has a facade of being dumbed down when really the chorus alone is as lyrical as any verse that was on rap radio this year. and obv the verses in "party like a rockstar" aren't even comparable to those in "wasted"

and i like "wasted" as much as "ante up", for the record

I agree it's a really good list up to this point. re: Washed Out -- he seems to be the lead dog in this whole subgenre, and it's not by chance. He does more with the same components than people like Neon Indian or Toro y Moi or Ducktails or whoever else. I hope when he finally make a proper album, he still writes the same way but increases the fidelity a little bit.

40 (Big Boi) - Second listen, remains pleasant - I think I'll walk around today and see if it ends up popping into my head all the time (which "Raindrops," "Hysteric," and "Trap Goin Ham" have all pulled off so far). I might DL this and keep it in rotation.

39 (Fever Ray) - Oh no, the wookies have been overthrown by a tribe of elvish Vikings mourning their lost loves from the mountaintops! And conducting freaky seances in suburban backyards, apparently. Actually this is much better than the goofy chanting one. Wouldn't mind a full record of this going on in the background, but since the chanting is apparently the killer, high-energy first track on the album I might be SOL.

38 (Florence, Machine, and Jamie xx Re-Work?) - I bet this sounds great on less shitty speakers. Right now feels a bit empty on the bass end. But a nice enough thing, I like the parts when the remix people are fucking with it more, the main singing stuff is a little too off-the-shelf soulful for me. I bet Fergie could do a good cover of this.

37 (Lindstroem & Prins Thomas) - By this time I'm super suspicious of anything where an O has a slashy line through it - shit never works out - but this is groovy! My copy has a glitch though, somebody took out the lead vocal that's clearly supposed to be here. I keep waiting for "Fresh" Prins Thomas to start dropping some Norwegian science but no. Don't get me wrong, this is fucking great music but if there's nothing to sing along to I can't figure what use to put this to. Ahh fuck, this is pretty good. The other tracks on Myspace aren't quite as killer but, whatever. Do y'all think I'll be able to find this at the record store?

36 (Gucci Mane) - Not quite getting this one. Pretty sluggish. Don't know why Blink-182 gets crucified for imagined red cups between takes and these guys can actually have them in the video and nothing bad happens. I mean I guess it's a pisstake of a frat party or something but there's not a lot going on here.
