I've never heard of this magnet magazine you speak of but in any case I think the real question you're trying to ask here is:
Since when did magnet magazine stopped caring about awesome music? And also at which point did I became such a jaded and pedantic person that feels the need to oppose idealisticaly the almost perfect homogeneity and righteousness of the hivemind.

This is very, very difficult.
― Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 October 2009 19:27 (fourteen years ago) link
OK, deliberately limiting myself to one track per 'artist':
1) Ride - Close My Eyes (Ride EP, 1990)2) My Bloody Valentine - Off Your Face (Glider EP, 1990)3) Slowdive - Slowdive (Slowdive EP, 1990)4) Boo Radleys - Foster's Van (Boo Up! EP, 1991)5) Telescopes - Ocean's Drive (untitled album, 1992)6) Aphex Twin - Ageispolis (Selected Ambient Works 85-92, 1992)7) PJ Harvey - Plants and Rags (Dry, 1992)8) Hardfloor - Acperience 5 (1993? - I got it in 94)9) Stereolab - French Disko (1993? - heard it on the radio then, but got it in 96)10) Blur - Badhead (Parklife, 1994)
I seem to have used up my ten in half the decade...
― Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:13 (fourteen years ago) link
Still need to add these, though:
11) Tricky - Ponderosa12) Motorbass - Flying Fingers / Les Ondes13) Boards of Canada - Turquoise Hexagon Sun

they all make me think of england. though they are not all from there. i actually have no idea where hardfloor is from. and boards of canada are from canada, right?. same queen anyway.
― scott seward, Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:26 (fourteen years ago) link
Hardfloor were German. Motorbass were French, I think. I might be wrong, but I think Boards of Canada are/were Scottish.
Re: selections - Ride could easily have been Seagull or Chelsea Girl instead. My Bloody Valentine should probably have been Soon, but that's just too obvious. Boo Radleys could easily have chose something off of Giant Steps, but I really like that earlier EP. Telescopes could have been You Set My Soul instead. Aphex Twin could easily have been any of about 20 tracks from SAW I, SAW II and I Care Because You Do. Blur could have been Beetlebum. Motorbass is kind of cheating choosing two tracks, but they run straight from one to the other and I think of them as one thing.
― Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:28 (fourteen years ago) link
or they make me think of english music magazines anyway. not criticizing! just saying, it would be easier to make a list of music if you excluded, like, 80% of the world from it.

'Everlong' is killing me right now and it wasn't even my favorite song off of that album. Might be getting nostalgic because everyone I known is in the process of parting ways... moving to different cities, different circles of friends, getting married, working all day long, etc... and the lyrics and the memories they evoke are aching very hard today.

Mine would honestly be close. Maybe exchanging the songs but Aphex Twin, Portishead, Massive Attack, Bjork, BOC, Pavement, Stereolab were all in heavy rotation in my early teens… hip hop would probably be missing… I got into it until the mid 00s and I realized I had been missing on some amazing albums.

I’ve decided the 90’s is a fucking weird decade for me. I’ll never be able to make a top 10 I’m satisfied with this decade. Gimme any other decade and I can easily enlist a top 20 that I feel satisfied with… not this decade though.
I have trouble separating what I actually listened to in the 90’s from the good stuff I found about later as an adult. There’s also stuff which keeps being pushed as “best of the 90’s” which I just can’t hear anymore no matter how good they might be (eg: Nirvana’s Nevermind and to a certain degree OK Computer), stuff which I loved as a child in the 90’s and I still think it’s funny but I find too immature nowadays to truly enjoy (eg: cafe tacvba, blink 182, hombres g), and cheesy dance tracks like say Scatman, Another Night, Believe, Better Off Alone, Rhythm of the Night…which immediatly make me smile if I overhear them somewhere but would probably never consider seriously in a top 10.
I went from being 5 to 15 years old in that decade. There’s too much going on in those years, it feels like 3 or even 4 different eras in time for me. Idk.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 03:30 (two years ago) link
I agree. There was just so much going on. Even coming up with the ten I did, I left out some of my favorite genres let alone albums. The 90s sucked in a lot of ways looking back, but sometimes I feel like the 00's and even early 10s were a continuation of a 90s explosion (that started in the late 80s). I'm biased, though, being as I turned 17 in '90, and I guess everybody overvalues the music they listened to in those years.
That said, it'd be just as difficult coming up with the ten worst songs of the 90s.

I actually like several of these! Actually with the exception of that Creed song which I do find terrible I think most of these are fun and some are even great. No way is Snow - Informer one of the worst songs of the decade, that song is awesome.
If I were to make such a list I guess something like Creed and Puddle of Mudd would make the cut.

xpost There does seem to be a certain lack of hip hop among selections here overall. I think of the mid-90s as a bit of a slump for hip hop and I wonder if we polled the noughties if more hip hop would be represented. (Voodoo chili I was gonna ask if the inclusion of Luniz means you’re from the Bay — it seems like a local fave. Personally I have to rep the remix, especially now since Shock G is on it. But anyway you scratched it from your list so disregard.)

Maybe y’all are right. Mostly it’s that I wasn’t listening to much hip hop from ‘95-‘00 other than Pac and J5 tbh. I was out of the loop on Nas, Outkast, Biggie, E-40…the list could go on. (I was going to a lot of great drum and bass parties all over the US tho.)Anyway that leads to me figuring out what’s wrong with my list — no Outkast. For now I’ll with Two Dope Boyz (In A Cadillac), seems like their proper anthem. And a deep fucking groove with massive flows riding on top of course. Dungeon Family surely one of the top production teams of the 90s in terms of influence.

Right I meant Organized Noise thanks. And I see I left Tupac out too, I only listed that Black Star remix. Pete Rock is another top 90s producer, except his influence was maybe more limited. But that remix also has one of Black Thought’s greatest guest verses too, it’s A+

I tried to:- include a broad range of genres that feel "1990s" to me (although lacking latin, african and asian music so let's call it "western")- hit singles or at least somewhat canonical genre classics- worldwide range but no songs that were just local hits (i.e. no finnish rap, american country, german schlager, dutch gabber etc)
Stardust Music Sounds Better With You (1998)Warren G & Nate Dogg Regulate (1994)Alice In Chains Would? Biosphere, interesting! That’s one I wasn’t familiar with — I’m just listening on headphones but it sounds like the sub bass is almost heavy enough for garage? Overall that’s half songs I would pick, but I haven’t even heard of much of the rest. (For those similarly in the dark, it seems Deus is some kind of Belgian indie metal [?], Entombed is Swedish death metal, and the Solar Quest sounds like some pretty basic acid techno. Respect.)

I don’t know, most of my knowledge of indie rock is pretty regional. I wasn’t closely following European indie at the time that’s for sure. I think Regulate is pretty great really, maybe not the greatest but definitely an excellent production. The lyrics are ok.

Bjork's Unravel is an amazing track
― Dan S, Sunday, 26 September 2021 03:37 (two years ago) link
I have serious trouble picking the best track from Homogenic, there’s so many classics in there. I think the only track that I tend to skip is “all neon like”, but I’ve been obssesed about every other track in there. There was a time where I’d have picked Pluto or Alarm Call. Then 5 Years was the one… I haven’t listened to it in years but I’d say from a diatance that Joga and Unravel are the two that seem to me like the safer choices for best songs. I’d probably change my mind if I hear the album again.

Oh and Hunter! Such a weird choice for a single, love it. Love the video, love the sort of martial beat. “How Scandinavian of me.” Yeah it’s a brilliant album.

I was supposed to work on a top 200 some months back and I've left it in the works, so I'll pretend I still need to pare it down and allow myself double the space.
Geto Boys - Mind Playing Tricks on MeThe Notorious B.I.G. - The WhatBrandy - I wanna be downFaith Evans - Love like thisBjörk - All Neon LikeTalk Talk - After the FloodSonny Sharrock - Many Mansions The Underground Solution - Luv Dancin'Digable Planets - Where I'm FromBlack Moon - Ack Like U Want ItDavid Sylvian - I surrenderThe Coup - Takin' TheseBelle and Sebastian - Like Dylan in the MoviesOutkast - Git Up, Git OutMazzy Star - Fade Into YouDeath - Lack of ComprehensionRomanthony - Hold OnGinuwine - PonyA tribe called quest - Bonita ApplebumSouls of Mischief - 93 'til infinity
Shit, I'm still missing Depeche Mode, Autechre, Cocteau Twins, Emperor, Ulver, Boubacar Traoré, Jeru, Penny Penny, Wu-Tang, EPMD, Sizzla and Los Fresones Rebeldes, what happened, oh yes it was a whole decade.

Hearing the Vulnicura live version of All Neon Like on YT made me return to it. It's the most Vespertine-like song on the album. My usual choice from Homogenic was Immature - which is this moment of solipsism, of crying and shouting and tearing the cocoon and loving it, power in vulnerability. Jóga, Unravel and Bachelorette are gorgeous but slightly demonstrative. I've never considered 5 years top Björk material - it's the beat... But that's redoing the poll all over again.
