recorded with pete kember of spacemen 3 -
looks like the new one will be different from the debut: quieter, maybe minimal, with 60's psych influences:
song dor dan tracey - indeed sounds like television personalities/modern lovers.it's working - kinks/barrett, maybe even animal collective.congratulation - slow flaming lipsdestrokk - spacemen 3 (surprising..)
it's gonna be enjoyable.i think.

He hasn't released an album as "Sonic Boom" since the early '90s, so it's probably fair to call him Pete now.

That's not an MGMT cover, that's the inside gatefold of an old E.A.R. record - I can't remember the name of the painter but he did a lot of psychedelic cartoon stuff. Will google "E.A.R." and "The Transaction" which was the name of the painting and see what comes up.
Jesus Christ, I knew no good would come of those tots hanging around Sonic Cathedral like a pair of floppy puppies. Eurgh.

After seeing these guys open for Of Montreal in a cafeteria five years ago, where they more or less just did karaoke over a PA backing track, I bought their Time To Preted EP. I got it home and was blown away at how good the thing was. Melodies Melodies Melodies. Amazing, catchy, poppy stuff. I was confused as to why the indie- community had yet to embrace these two dudes.
Flash to two years later, and they're on the cover of the NME and "Kids" is playing everywhere. Except where there used to be a perfect electric drumkit, there's now a live one, and....well, the magic's gone. It's not just that they're huge(ish) now. It's that their album pretty much sucked (save for the two tracks that were on the EP + "Electric Feel"). They used to exude a "we don't give a shit" attitude; now they're some psychedelic AnCo mockery.
I hate to be the "I just want them to be the way they used to be!" guy, but so it goes.
I urge everyone who likes even a single of these guys' songs to check out that debut EP. "Love Always Remains" > "Indie Rokkers" > "Kids" is pure pop gold. The breakdown in "Indie Rokkers" is probably the best thing they've done.

from brooklynvegan:
You have won a chance to be part of an extraordinary MGMT event. The MGMTmobile will be visiting 6 cities, and we are challenging YOU to come find it
We will reveal clues to the location 1 hour prior to arrival. The first 6 people to this location will be part of a very special MGMT experience. Be sure to stay tuned as we reveal each city below. [Where is MGMT?]
This show "event" starts at 5pm?
UPDATE: This is NOT a show. My guess: they're going to play the record for people that get there in time. UPDATE 2: And it's not even for that many people. The first people that got there went into a van I think. UPDATE 3: The first few people that got there were loaded in a van. The rest saw "MGMT Was Here" written in on the sidewalk and were GIVEN A BUTTON!
Sorry I ever even posted about this. :-( -- Lame stunt.

― Moka, Saturday, 20 March 2010 23:49 (thirteen years ago) link
Siberian Breaks and I found a whistle were my favorites on first listen. Doesn't seem to be anything in here ripe for singles radio or clubs but this is much better than what I had put my hopes on. I feel an odd relief after I started to lose all hope on them after listening to that fake leak :P

― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 March 2010 04:58 (thirteen years ago) link
this has some moments -- "someone's missing" & "i found a whistle" -- but it really does kind of reek of a band grasping at something and not knowing at all what that is. i'm sure they're proud of making a left turn album that will divide their fanbase and critics, but i'm pretty sure there will be a day when their fame has passed when they look back and say "yeah this album is pretty retarded." it's pretty laughable that this is being released by a major label.
also lyrically, not like it matters all that much, but they're still very much the band that rhymed "electric eel" and "electric feel"
― shabba canks (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 March 2010 05:31 (thirteen years ago) link
it's funny -- yeasayer & mgmt toured back in the day before mgmt really blew up, and after hearing their respective first albums, if you told me, "one band will overreach in an attempt to make a challenging second album and it will lead to nothing of worth and quite possibly might kill their career" and "the other band will pare down their negative qualities and write a second album that is not perfect, but indisputably has three or four epic, monster anthems" i would not have guessed that mgmt would be the first band and yeasayer would be the second
― shabba canks (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 March 2010 05:36 (thirteen years ago) link
I saw that tour and thought Yeasayer basically blew MGMT off the stage, but they've yet to effectively transfer that energy to their recordings.

― Blue Sky Whine (SeekAltRoute), Sunday, 21 March 2010 08:41 (thirteen years ago) link
Considering how much of a disaster that first "single" was, I'm surprised at how not terrible this record is. Doesn't even come close to something I'd recommend to anybody beyond "Check it out, I guess" -- but it's mostly harmless (occasionally interesting) psych (with a few half-decent Sparks impersonations thrown in for good measure). I previously thought this band had no staying power, but I'm willing to recalculate that if they can refine what's on Congratulations for the future.
That said: commercially, this record will drop like a fucking stone. Can't imagine them staying on Columbia after this one, although I can't see them on any of the major indies either (Domino, MAYBE). So, time will tell.

No Johnny, I never actually said I liked it, I still think it's awful. But yeah, the leak I had was just a bunch of annoying pitched voices and atuned synth pads... come to think of it, I don't know why I thought it was the real deal as it sounded nothing like the vocalist from MGMT.
― Moka, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:27 (thirteen years ago) link
two songs in and it is my opinion that you guys are wrong about this not being commercially viable--sounds very accessible, reaching out of lo-fi dance glow into unobtrusive psych pop will get these into way more people's hands and the impending 4.0 pitchfork review won't do enough to stop it.

it's not bold to be a pop band that releases an album that has no singles but has a bunch of songs like "flash delirium" that flail around in the name of "unexpected stylistic curveballs" -- it's just self-defeating and self-hating

i think it's pretty hard to read it as them intentionally trying to pull back from the sort of fans that they've amassed -- they said that they don't want people to download their songs, they want people to download the album and listen to it in full, blah blah -- for people who only heard "kids" or "electric feel" and then here "flash delirium" or w/e, i'm not exactly sure that a lot of them are going to be enticed into hearing the whole album! that sounds as pretty close to "intentional career suicide" as a major label rock band can get

Ok. Here are a few for starters. Its psychedelia is unpsychedelic. Instead it is twee, mannered, goofy and aimless. To the extent that it makes a Flight Of The Conchords LSD music parody sound like The Calico Wall by comparison.

But I don't even hear that much dedication in the record! My biggest problem after that one listen is that it seemed pretty dull and lifeless. I loved the debut because it was fun and packed with so much joy. This time around things just feel a lot more flat.
I'm sure that doesn't count as "valid" criticism though.

Wow I think you just helped me nail my main criticism, I don't want a "downer" record from MGMT. That's about the complete opposite of what I look for in them! Lady GaGa already has some pretty dark elements in her music, particularly some of the non-singles on the her mini-album.

― kwhitehead, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:14 (thirteen years ago) link
Ok I'm giving the whole thing a second chance.
1. It's Working - This actually sounds decent and makes for a good opener. A few nods to psychedelia... oh hey a harpsichord! Will we get eastern instruments too? Mmm... seems not. It got a tad annoying towards the end and even tho the chorus got drilled add nauseum, when it was all over I couldn't remember anything about it.2. Song for Dan Treacy - I'll be honest, I've no idea who Dan Treacy is but I thought this sounded like a throwaway Of Montreal song. Got a bit better towards the end as it started to accumulate energy but it's been a confusing listen so far.3. Someone's Missing - Hey there's the eastern instruments! The bassline helps shape an otherwise amorphous piece. Ends up being too short and uninspired. First revelation that they didn't gave a fuck when recording this and I'm starting to wonder why should I.4. Flash Delirium - Nice mood but as the song progresses it starts to sound like a bunch of half assed ideas that dont fit one another, I'm starting to sense a trend in here. The ending was terrible, MGMT should never resort to screaming.5. I Found a Whistle - Probably the most anthemic thing on the album so far. I thought it was good the first time I heard it but this time it felt like annoying hippie drivel to my ears. The psych influence starts to grate.6. Siberian Breaks - Best song on the record. Lovely synths here and there. Seems to channel Flaming Lips somewhere round the middle. I like many of the individual ideas in here but don't think it works that well as a whole. Good but not enough too keep me interested through the whole 12 minutes. I don't see returning to it very often.7. Brian Eno - Sounds to me like some sort of terrible rockabilly band trying to hommage space age pop. Didn't paid attention to the lyrics but song is incredibly annoying. I suppose this is what johnnyo refers to as the humor in this record.8. Lady Dada's Nightmare - Meandering synth pads, not too much of a song.9. Congratulations - Somehow reminds me of VU's Loaded for the first minutes and I like that, as it progresses, though, it starts to sound as detached and uninterested as the claps that end the record.
If I have to be positive the best thing I could say about this record is that it has a great album cover and the production is a step up from the blown-up sound from Oracular. As for the music, they need to rein it in a little bit... I'd like to isolate a few moments and ideas that could've made a decent piece and throwaway the most part of it.

The more I listen to this the more I like it. Lots of little hooks that over time get more and more interesting. LOVE LOVE LOVE the title song. Great slow jam. The first couple of songs I now detect a really strong Tromp Le Monde-era Pixies influence, especially the first song. "I've Got A Whistle" is pretty rad.
And I really like "Lady Dada" a whole lot. It's kind of like a Bruce Haack version of "White Christmas" getting derailed and lost in soft noise.
Still think "Brian Eno" is a bit annoying.

Sonic Boom is in a huge I-collect-Nazi-memorabilia phase at present. To the point where he's actually wearing shit out that could ruffle some serious feathers among folk who don't take kindly to that sort of thing. not optimistic about new record though, getting slammed/poo-pooed/ignored for going out on a limb and making a weird(er) album after a pop smash seems to do a number on a band's head... it's like they want to be ariel pink but are going about it backwards. they should write a whole bunch of great catchy songs but perform and record them in a weird amateur bedroom kind of way instead of writing weak meandering songs and then doing these big slick productions around them.

i don't agree with this "trying to be weird" narrative. congratulations had eccentric elements, but the hooks were there; songs like "song for dan treacy" "someone's missing" and the title track are total earworms. i think one of the things people responded to in oracular spectacular was this sort of groovy wiccan undercurrent, which was way more 60s than most 2000s indie, and i think they just are continuing to refine that san francisco sound. i mean "i found a whistle that works like a charm/ and when my noose is tied i can blow it/ and fall right into your arms / fifteen centuries of dissolution and grief/ and return a yellow trickster and a thief." classic psychadelic Odin reference, the god of the hanged. the album reminds me of new hope pennsylvania.
― Pat Finn, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 04:51 (ten years ago) link
people talk about this album like it's jandek or something but in actuality it is a total joy. i hope they get "weirder" with each new release. also, this isn't noted very often, but the production on congratulations is way better than on oracular spectacular, which sounds really bright and metallic for some reason. i want to hear it remastered.
― Pat Finn, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 04:55 (ten years ago) link
I think people are talking about the new song, not Congratulations. You think the new song has hooks? I never got into congrats, but my favorite songs on oracular are The Handshake and Weekend Wars which are both somewhat adventurous but still great pop songs.
I mean I guess The Handshake hinted that they were going to screw the label over and spend their advance on acid, but this is not the way to go about it. You can make an uncommercial "fuck you" album that's still great, but somehow I don't think this new one is going to be their Dopesmoker.
― wk, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 05:13 (ten years ago) link
maybe not "hooks" on that one, but it seems pretty straightforward melodically and not at all "out there". what it reminds me of most is yoshimi-era flaming lips. idk, it is like camp psychadelia and it sounds really into what it is, if that makes sense.
― Pat Finn, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 05:21 (ten years ago) link

― i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Friday, 21 March 2014 05:58 (nine years ago) link
it's pretty different than oracular. the song structures are generally looser and there are more surprises. but the main thing that's brilliant about it is the way the band plays with the album's inevitable failure in the wake of oracular spectacular, a fluke hit they would never again live up to. i mean, there are few moments in music journalism more memorable to me than mgmt essentially bracing the new york times for disappointment when they were profiled as part of the promotion for the album. similar sentiments abound in the album: "the hot dog is getting cold / you'll never be as good as the rolling stones." "dead in the water / it's not a paid vacation/... yet all is well if the ticket sells." on one level, this kind of thing is just funny, a way of trolling the whole media cycle they were caught up in. but there are also anxieties about artistic belatedness on display that seem more pointed and serious. "we'll always be a step behind him, he's brian eno."
i guess mgmt had already explored their fatigue at the idea of being pop stars in "time to pretend". "congratulations" takes this further, and in more personal directions. i mean, the closing track -- which is the source of the album's title -- is basically a fuck-you to themselves. they are not convinced that their music has any real value. and yet, they clearly have a ton of fun with the wiccan-psychadelia stuff, like "i found a whistle" which would have blown people away if it had been written in 1968. so that's the other twist. there is a way in which the band's stated ambivalence about their work is liberating and i think, for them, that's the whole point of making fun of the whole idea of the pressure of a sophomore album.... to get some distance from the whole thing. and it works! there are moments that seem pure and fun. but also as a listener i can't shake the uneasiness these guys clearly feel about their whole career. all of this stuff is compelling to me.
― Treeship, Friday, 21 March 2014 06:24 (nine years ago) link
tl;dr this is the definitive album of the era of clickbait journalism because on a literal, lyrical level it is consumed with anxieties about its reception.

I found the s/t really dull & badly produced... this is at least nice on the ears, warm synths... but I feel that they really were poisoned by the harsh rejection of Congratulations. Such a shame, that record is so so fucking great.
― flappy bird, Tuesday, 17 October 2017 20:59 (six years ago) link
yeah "Something's Missing" is all time imo. sort of existing in a glorious psychedelic nexus between Jackson 5 and Pink Floyd. the build up and that final chorus is so beautiful, and the A/B structure of the thing is so perfect.
"I Found a Whistle" has that utopian pop thing going for it but w really cool production and backwards sounds and stuff. a lot of this record feels very "Clouds Taste Metallic". maybe hearkening back to the space gospel of "They Punctured My Yolk". i think they hit this feeling in the first album with "The Youth" (probably my 2nd favorite track from that album after "Weekend Warriors").
the title track is so perfect. it has that sweeping-the-floor feel to it. it is the sound of a champagne bottle popping, hittin' the dusty trail. spare acoustic guitar and drums, with little rainshowers of synths, like tiny digital fireworks. it is so pleasing to listen to. this really scratches that Roxy Music itch, of truly futuristic pop.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 18 October 2017 00:09 (six years ago) link
yeah otm, especially about the title track "sweeping the floor" feel. it's such a beautiful song, an instant classic in a way. all about that descending bass line.
my favorite has always been "Song for Dan Treacy." completely manic and catchy and just fucking fun, those Scooby Doo synths on the chorus. & the thing jolts from section to section and actually gets better. "It's Working" is a great opener, too. "Siberian Breaks" - again, brilliant, and something they'll probably never attempt again because they got slapped for it in 2010.

new song
MGMT have shared a new song called “When You Die.” Take a listen below, and also check out its corresponding psychedelic music video. MGMT recently shared the visual for their new song “Little Dark Age,” the title track off their forthcoming fourth record. The album is due out in February according to the New Yorker; while its release date and tracklist have yet to be announced, the group have been performing new tracks from the record while on tour. Little Dark Age is the follow-up to the band’s 2013 self-titled LP. Read Pitchfork’s 2013 interview with MGMT.

there's a brief interview in the new Rolling Stone. describes Congratulations as a "disappointing experimental album" that alienated "fans, critics, and even their record label." apparently they handed the new album in to Columbia last April, and were told it wouldn't come out until this month. they have one more record left on their contract & are eager to not be on a major label. made me kinda sad. the piece says the record is their most poppy since Oracular Spectacular, praise that I don't know how to take. makes me equally excited and nervous. from the end of the piece:
"I would love to just go straight from fucking around in my attic to putting something on YouTube," says VanWyngarden. Goldwasser has an even bolder vision: "Maybe instead of putting out an album, we'll put out an immersive art installation where you go into a house and each room is a different musical landscape. We can enter the David Byrne era of our career."

new album is pretty good not my favorite but it will grow on me for sure. feels a lot like the first album at times. lots of 80s style synth pop here w the standard Pink Floyd Lite subject matter. a few tracks remind me of "I Wear My Sunglasses at Night" or something. like the song about looking at your phone is actually really cool. "Me and Michael" is better than "Kids" and probably gonna make them a lot of licensing dough. the song seriously rules. lyrics, chorus, all of it, feels like a lost 80s classic.

Lou Reed Turned Down an MGMT Collaboration, Told Them to Fire Their Managers: The band say they asked the late icon to appear on Congratulations
While talking about working on the album, they revealed that they approached Lou Reed to contribute vocals to their track “Lady Dada’s Nightmare.” “He pretty much said it didn’t need it,” they reveal. “And then he talked about how we also didn’t need managers, and our managers were there.” Soon after, they ran into Reed at a dog show (where they were dressed as dandies)

Yeah, tight band, great light show, they put a lot of work into it. It helped that the hall has great acoustics, but they sounded great.

Buddy saw them and said they did a video mocking those who only like their 3 huge hits. Yeah - only the hits you made your careers on :-/

the show was amazing. it leaned heavily on the new album witch was fine with me. it was all techno color and made you want to dance. the did play their three big hits and the place was packed. they had video going on with a smaller HD screen in front of a bigger screen and flashed all sorts of stuff on it. they were pretty psychedelic for the most part. fun show and will see these guys again. they should be massive in this type of music climatic (2018).

they played the same set but closed the show with "Siberian Breaks" instead. "Congratulations" was also played but was the last song before the Encore instead.

Wow that's great and a little bit new for them, I could take a whole album of songs like this. Bunch of youtube comments point out a Cure influence and I can hear that

Me and Michael booms!
Always like returning to little dark age whenever I need that particular taste of pop. Giving congratulations its first listen based on the reaction in this thread. Loving this second song, like a mid era Beatles song at 1.5x speed and a coat of slick modern production
