Will Smith/Fresh Prince: C/D?

Most people rate DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince pretty highly, but they usually credit it all to Jeff. I think he was one of the great DJs, but the Prince was a great rapper too. I recommend listening to the album He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper, especially the title track. Starring in a sitcom and then becoming a movie star isn't the way to street credibility, but I think there are still moments on his lightweight pop-rap records that show how strong a flow he has. And this is prompted by hearing the new Men In Black-linked single, which I think is terrific.

So does anyone agree? Or is he a movie star who's lost what little talent he had?

Will Smith puts lie to the idea that people in the pop arena are untalented. For "Miami" alone, he's classic, but when you throw in the DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince stuff, he's almost untouchable.

Classic, if just because he pisses so many of his so-called peers off, mainly by actually being more talented than them. Especially search "Men In Black" and "Will2K"

i will shrug off my reactionary opinions about his later stuff. i'm sure there's some good there... yes, summertime was pretty good.

he's the dj... was not so grate. unfortunately i'd say that the best album was Rock the House.

Just went to an excellent wedding in Westchester where "Miami," "MIB" and of course the all-conquering "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" were all played...twice! Utterly classic and pure virtuoso pop. I mean, just consider Men In Black:

Movie exec (cluelessly): "Mr Smith, we'd love to have you do a little tie-in number since you're also known as a rap singer"

Fresh Prince: "How's This? cuz we're the first, last and only line of defense against the worst scumoftheuniverse!"

Movie exec: "Can you work in the noisy cricket?"
