In fact, I recall reading abt the time SY took Descension as the support act and they were apparently heckled. Descension do make that sort of blistering sound.

Disk 1: 2nd track is called 'Night of the Assassins' 3. Flames of Ice 4. A memory is far Disk 2: don't have the translation to 1 and 2.

The first 3 tracks on disc 1 is OK (1 and 2 on 'side 1' of the vinyl. Flames of ice on 'side 2' but A memory is far is not the last track on the vinyl. That is the 8:30 secs one on disc 2).

Its a straight swap (since it probably wouldn't fit due to the time considerations). Can you fit 27+ mins onto one side of vinyl?

Also the last (i think) 10 secs of memory is far is missing (just noting this, if you 15.32+11.35 that is slightly more than 27 mins). But i think my MP3 of the 'last one' is 21 mins long whereas I think they have all 25 mins onto vinyl (the bassline is the same 'melody' but it's a slightly different tuning I think, but I'll have to check).

I'm wondering also why didn't they bootleg it onto 2xCDs. maybe vinyl was cheaper...

It's a very good record. and when it's that good things like artwork don't matter. My small speakers connected to my computer cannot do justice to the sound of this band as I play the Mp3s. but my stereo speakers can as I play the vinyl (though it would surely pale in comparison to seeing this stuff live). So I'm glad I got it. Amazing what some of these bands were working at on the other side of the planet (recorded 'le 12 mars 1977 a Tachikawa' as it says on the webpage). It is a psychedelic rock record but the way they go on their 'noise assault' is pretty remarkable. so if you have a shitty computer get hold of it (I had most of these as MP3s but I had to get it).

there are a couple of things labelled variously "mass studio demo" or "mars studio demo" that are somewhat different - one features two versions of "romance of black grief" (i think) that are surprisingly subtle and have some nice tape-delay messing about. the other (september 9th, 1980) is atypical rallizes stuff with some noisy guitar.

the "red" cdr is pretty good, too, but as with all rallizes stuff they generally just did the same batch of songs again and again.

Anyone interested in Japanese psych/scuzz should seek the Gaseneta disc on PSF. 1978-era total punk garbage guitar that influenced High Rise later (who apparently shared some music on a cassette release with Gaseneta). Imagine speed-psych acid mothers minus the reverb, with a lot grottier production and a guy plowing through solos ultra-fast with gloves on...hits the spot for me!

got this last night: its pretty good in a sort of blue humans vein (I suppose its more to do with instrumentation and the fact that doyle is there). I'll have to hear this a few more times before i can say more on it.

The fact that I first thought it was "subtle" only shows the depth of my guitar-noise jadedness. It pretty much singes your eyebrows off. The tempo is slower overall. There is a very cool one-chord blues vamp that sounds a bit like John Lee Hooker on moonshine & ayahuasca, and though it claims to all be from one source, I suspect it may not be. THere are differences in sound, songs fade a bit too slowly, revealing the beginning of the next song to have actually been another one.

maybe i'm missing the point, having only heard '77 live, but i can't help that thinking people can get a bit overexcited when something is a) japanese b) noisy and c) hard to find.

unless you start explaining the 'pointlessness' of it all and in what way it 'misreads' psychedelia you will end looking a fule.

you are gonna have to give me examples of this. I think what rallizes do (two guitars feeding back and virtually bleeding into each other) with constant bass/drum pattern is something that no band I've heard of sounds like.

what is so 'hackish' abt their 'bluesy' guitar solos? You see, they are lifted from the blues but its not menat to be exactly like blues and so what if the bass parts are lifted from hendrix. The only thing you can say abt bass parts is that they are repeating pattern. Its mixed high up and it heightens the 'body blow' effect but its something to hang onto as they throw these formless guiatr shapes for 10 + minutes, same with the drums, which sound competent to me.

And song isn't their strong point but its a mix of song and jamming. its psych rock so you're gonna get that.

i think people have overintellectualized responses to this band, i really do. if it was just a tape of your brother-in-law's pick-up band you'd probably toss it in the bin (but discreetly, so as not to offend the brother-in-law). i will, however, give les rallizes denudes another chance just so i'm not guilty of condeming something without trying to understand it first.

When its done well, its exceptional.

funny you should mention neil young bcz just on wednesday i got hold of the 'red' and 'green' CDRs and I got reminded of Neil Young (guitars not as distorted as live 77, basically comes down to that). I think the blue cheer connection come from the use of distortion whereas the velvets comes from the use of repeating basslines and drum patterns.

but yeah, its a lot of things.

I like Rallizes but think it's decidedly minor work. Fushitsusha or Kosukuya they ain't.

I have a legit 'Live 77' cd. I'll be happy to let it go for, oh, $400.

perversely my favourite rallizes song is the acoustic kioku ha toi which i find myself humming on the regular. Tho sometimes Enter the Mirror, the Last One or Night of the Assassins takes its place.

In the past month I realized LRD are one of the best bands I've ever heard, just from the '77 Live album, which gets ten times better each time I hear it (especially on drugs). They have a few other releases floatin around too, like Yoda Go-A-Go-Go, which kicks fucking ass!!

Still one of my all-time favorites

Live 77 is indeed a classic. A pity that none of their other releases matches it.

bought dreaded phoenix copies of heavier than a death in the family and blind baby has its mother's eyes today, with significant regret. but there is no way that i'm otherwise gonna get my hands on "real copies," and no way that anyone's making significant scratch off limited runs of obscure shit like this, nice vinyl and decent packaging at high-but-not-obscene prices. it's not undercutting any legit market that i can see; alls it's doing is removing some of the geek cache associated with the rarity. and for me, it's functionally valid. i mean like i have all these tunes on my ipod, but they don't fucking work there. i basically only use my ipod for shuffling and to get familiar with poppy new stuff. i don't want some blone out 20-minute drug drone reverb epic to come on when i'm biking to work. it's unsuitable. i want to listen to this shit when i'm bonding w/ the couch and reading comix in ur wee wee hours, and that's the point at which i'm spinning vinyl. vinyl is appropriate in this case wr2 my ancient mariner lifestyle patterning.

I need to mention that there have been a number of issues/re-issues of Les Rallizes Denudes stuff on the rather amazing Univive label. These are either newly discovered tapes or nicely cleaned up. They're really expensive multi-disc jobs w/ nice packaging & the whole works. They're also floating around on the p2p sites. Rumor has it that Mizutani may be involved in some way with this label, at the very least bestowing at least somewhat legit status on them. I understand that they are CDs, not CDRs. Some titles:

My joy at having discovered this gem is somewhat dimmed by the realization that my quest for the ultimate gnarly skronkblast tsunami had perhaps ended. It grabs your head and makes a brain smoothie. Its a paint-peeling, wallpaper-yellowing, houseplant-killing, pet-epilepsy-inducing bundle of joy. If it were to take human form, just one of its sperm could wipe a badger's ass with Chuck Norris's nutsack. It could wad Chuck Norris into a ball & shoot him into low orbit with a slingshot fashioned from ox femurs & wolverine hymen.

One discog I looked at listed only Live '77, their side of Oz Days, and the 7"EP as being official. That's 3 out of a zillion CDs & LPs that are in circulation! I think buying these versions of Les Rallizes stuff is not too objectionable. Pretty much the entire Rallizes catalog is bootleg and it was tolerated even before the digital file swapping era. On the other hand, stuff like the Flower Travellin' Band material being bootlegged/pirated is really bad news. Phoenix seems to be taking some of their cues from the Japrocksampler material. A few years after Krautrocksampler a lot of legit reissues of rare German records started showing up on various labels, to everyone's benefit. Would there have been the Kraftwerk re-masters or the Neu! box set without the interest generated by this book and other artists and writers turning people on to the stuff at the same time? I sincerely doubt it. One of the worst consequences of pirate operations like Phoenix is that they basically destroy any chance of a legit, licensed, decent-sounding official reissue by sucking up all the demand with their BS needledrop bootlegs. I'm appalled that Forced Exposure carries Phoenix's stuff. Anyone ever inquire about that? Sorry for the derail, this has been on my mind a lot lately...

Merry-Go-Round Records (a division of S. Korea's Beatball Record) reissue of Montgomery Chapel is legit. mini-LP gatefold, repro'd liner notes, i don't know of any other. such an awesome album. holier-than-thou squares not taking drugs to make music for others to take drugs to.

in their first incarnation, Heavy... and Blind Baby... were already shameless boots, even if the pressed CDs gave them an air of legitimacy. so i wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Forced Exposure also carried the much-loathed Monk & Doxy labels.. Monk is expensive 'bootlegs' of old-time material without any liner notes & ugly packaging; doxy is more just straight bootlegs of stuff like hank williams & lightnin hopkins rarities. ugh.

i see yr point, but don't know that this is true in the case of FTB. can't imagine that he sold more than a few thousand copies of that thing internationally. if there was ever enough interest to justify a legit reissue, it still exists. hell, i'd buy it again just to get right with god, and i imagine a lot of the people who bought radioactive/phoenix copies (hardcore music geeks, all of us, i guarantee) would do the same.

both the FTB and rallizes LPs sound excellent, imo. packaging sucks, but i have no problem with the sound or the pressing quality.

a lot of the time, it seems to me, a steady stream of bootlegs aimed at geeks does more to build up and maintain interest than it does to diminish it. but who knows...

dude, selling "a few thousand copies" of a CD that retails for $17 (more in the case of the LPs) with no royalty payments or label hassles equals more money that most people on this board make in a month. and the guy has like 40 bootlegs out under the new label name! want a straight up needledrop of Silver Apples? every release of his that gets purchased funds more blatant thievery.

Phoenix put out a copy of the Fraction album (twice according to discogs). And I know that Mexican Summer is putting it out as well, and they claim this: "At long last, the FIRST fully authorized reissue of the psychedelic hard rock private press to end them all." And they also have a Bobb Trimble single as well. Are they somehow involved with this Phoenix label at all? Or am I way off base here

Sure he's also laughing in his bunker, somewhere, on how this stuff has gone. While others release every gig and note he's not even bothering and then you read news of a 'release'. Think a quid is too much to spend.

French Demo tape...is ok, I guess, never made a huge impression but I'll re-listen - only ever return to Live '77 and a gig from about '93 or so and a couple of other things.

Saw someone posting a few gigs from the 80s on youtube a few weeks ago, its in colour and takes away the mystique, but it sounds quite good.

Rallizes played some shows w/avant-garde theatre groups headed by Shuji Terayama so the punishing volumes and strobe lighting in that setting were (I guess) meant to heighten the tension.

Man, I was at that documentary screening too, at the Spectacle - I didn't enjoy it but I guess I just don't enjoy the whole lot of amateur-shot concert footage documentaries. I went in to it thinking there'd be more of a narrative structure. Am definitely humming the bass line of night of the assassin everywhere tho.

no lime - I know of that source for the bassline. The interesting thing about rallizes which not really many people acknowledge is how much in love with 50s rock n' roll they were (everyone thinks the starting point for this stuff is a mix of Blue Cheer and Doors amped up). That guitar at the beginning of the Everly's cover is pure rallizes.

Its a terrible piece, the worse was the speculation on Haino and Mizutani at the end. The article by Cummings from '99 (and various reviews) still is the best piece I've seen on this stuff. Hilarious (and not too surprising) that he hates that book by Julian Cope.

Cummings should not be too harsh on it, he has always struck me as being v very aware of making this stuff into 'esoterica'. A trap this piece falls head into. I'd love to know what they've 'influenced'.

I had a chance to chat with Kawabata briefly at Terrastock 7 about Cope's book and he was diplomatic, but noted that it didn't help when album sleeves were shown of a completely different release from the one he was talking about.

If that piece had been written by an ilxor and/or had not appeared on a corporate website it would no doubt be getting plenty of plaudits. The fact that it contains zero information is kind of the point of the article, isn't it? It's a piece about the mystery, and speculation is fair game, as is characterising Rallizes as esoterica (which is how I've always regarded them).

I don't find 'em that mysterious either. Some people who make things choose not to talk about it, or release that much. And because of the kind of group that was, i.e. one that was ever going to appeal to twenty people, it isn't too surprising that there was a revolving door policy of personnel and that was one of them was possibly then involved in political activity (or terrorism, take your pick) as many Japanese youth (and many from Europe and developed countries) were taking part in action and 'holidaying' in Palestine at that time.

When I first thought that listening to them might be something to do (as a result of that piece on The Wire) I couldn't find anything whatsoever for a good while. My copy of Live '77 is on this very crappy bit of vinyl with a photocopied photo of Mizutani (I kid you not). It got way better on slsk (bootleg heaven) but now you just hit youtube and there are days of it, along with pretty crappy video footage that would probably get rid of the mystique.

There are some fairly interesting angles (some which would require sometime to research and write-up), and some proper highlights comps to be done. Memory is gone but I had a top [so many versions] of The Last One.

i dunno, they're pretty mysterious to me. i mean, relative to other bands?
you guys will regret it when i'm accepting my best documentary oscar for "searching for mizutani" wherein I track him down and make him perform in dodger stadium.

There's a song on the 13.7.74 set (in the Great White Wonder box) called, or mistranslated as "You Were Known" with a lovely cycling chord sequence at a somewhat relaxed tempo that sounds like something Boards Of Canada might use. It's not a million miles from Dayvan Cowboy. Of course our boy proceeds to wring seven shades of glorious atonal sh!t out of it for a good nine minutes.

Note, a recording supposedly bearing the same title on the "Are You Ralliezed?" release and available on YouTube, appears to be another song entirely.

I didn't know it was released as Flightless Bird actually, just sorta been listening on the random - the echo-y stuff in Enter the Mirror and Flames of Ice, with all the strum & drum...its something very 50s(?) I mean they probably are one of the best psych bands that really have an affinity and channel that specific, late 50s rock & roll sound. There is a slower, more languid pace..

I mean the change of pace from one version of Flames of Ice in Live '77 to this one here.

The stabbing riffs in Flames of Ice are so addictive - totally a late 50s hangover.

How do you guys rate Naked Giza Star? I know it's just a comp but it seems to cover a pretty wide span of time (73 to 87) and, according to Discogs, "originated from a request by a music critic in 2003 for Mizutani to produce a high-quality release from a master source." It always goes (relatively) cheap, I was thinking about grabbing that one to feed this kick I'm on. Lately it's been all about France Demos and the mellow-but-still-blown-out psych folk genius of Deeper Than The Night (which has the best / worst cover art I've ever seen)

I'd been checking occasionally but hadn't seen that France Demo Tapes had had a more accessible release, although it does seem to be another Radioactive / Phoenix related label. That version of The Last One is blasted even by usual Rallizes standards. Isn't one of the other tracks also on Blind Baby, though?

I'll have to check, I'm not sure, haven't heard that one in a long time, and only have a crappy CDR boot of it. But yeah, the version of FDT I have is on Bamboo which iirc is another label by that Phoenix / Radioactive guy

Giving it a listen to a few cuts I could find and I'm not sure on it. The fuzz I can always hook it to my veins but not reaching cathedral levels for me..

I've seen a couple of reviews of Naked Diza Star (I'm quite sure it's Diza with a D) complain that the discs are CDRs, so tread carefully.

Listened to some of it yesterday. Only issue I have is the sequencing, it sorta skips around and spans a lot of time (73 to 87), but there are some pretty great jams on here. Surprised by how much I dug "The Last One" from '87. Also surprised that the audio fidelity of these boots never really improved in like 15 years. Like it's often difficult to tell what 'era' you are listening to based on audio fidelity alone.

But yeah, CDR or no CDR, it's quite a bit of LRD for not much dough, so I may go for it, if only to have some new jams for the car

So has anyone figured out why there's a swastika on the drum set in that one video? Because I love this band but it's been bumming me out since I saw it. And yes, I registered an account just so I could ask this question.

It's on the kick drum; you can see it pretty clearly at around 5:30. I know Mizutani was involved in radical left politics, but sometimes radical left-wingers become radical right-wingers. I have a feeling something else is going on here, but it just bugs me not to know because I otherwise idolize this band.

i did hear back and was tipped to a small group of far-right japanese bands doing ultranationalist / oi type things, none of which i feel like discussing in this thread. that said, i went down a discogs rabbit hole trying to see if there was any crossover between musicians in that scene and mitzutani's band c. '94 or really ever. nothing came up but tbh i didn't try all that hard. if that seems like a promising tip to you, feel free to send me an ilx mail and i can give you names of bands and musicians who were most certainly using nazi iconography / lyrics on purpose. as for me i'm going to move on i guess.

I thought the swastika was used quite a lot for shock value during punk and before. You see it on Siouxdie's armband, Side thirty, Gonn's amp cover et etc.

So would think it tied in with that.

Not sure if Ron Asheton's Nazi clothing fetishism does. That may be his own aesthetic.

Thanks for looking into it -- I'm tempted to do that discogs digging, but I think instead I'll just choose to believe that it was the drummer's misguided Stooges tribute. I just think that if Mizutani had taken a Nazi turn in the '90s, that would have made it into the legend. The fact that he played with Arthur Doyle in '97 also makes it unlikely (though not impossible!) that he believed in Aryan supremacy.

not sure if anything is to be gained by my weighing in here but ime the general Japanese grasp of Naziism and its tenets, both in theory and in practice, is very limited. This stuff is not taught in Japanese schools, the European context and history of it is obscured, and the understanding of the symbolism is vague. The average Japanese person does not really know what a Nazi was (much less a Jew).

That being said, it makes it more likely that that flag was more in the spirit of punk provocateurs, primarily British, that trotted out Nazi imagery for shock value, a detailed discussion of which recently took place here: The Ian Curtis memorial thread. It seems reasonable to assume that Les Rallizes Denudes were not real European Theater WWII buffs and more likely taking cues from a musical culture/iconography with which they were more passingly familiar (Stooges, UK punk, etc.)

Operating out of a small upstairs space just around the corner from the train station in the Kichijoji neighborhood of Tokyo, OZ was a scruffy, DIY affair that lasted not much more than a year. Between June 1972 to September 1973, the cafe and performance space became the nerve center for the city’s burgeoning underground and counterculture set.

Hadaka No Rallizes, aka Les Rallizes Dénudés, the psychedelic noisemakers originally from Kyoto, was one of the marquee names at OZ. Led by the enigmatic Takashi Mizutani, the now-legendary band was one of the earliest bookings for the venue, and would ultimately close out OZ Last Days, a raucous five-day blowout to celebrate the short but wonderful world of OZ. To commemorate the occasion, recordings made at OZ were released as OZ DAYS LIVE, a private press 2LP set featuring Miyako Ochi, Acid Seven, Masato Minami, Taj Mahal Travellers, and four tracks by the Rallizes—which constituted just a fraction of what had been recorded at the time. For nearly 50 years, these songs remained the only official appearance of the Rallizes on vinyl LP—until now.

With The OZ Tapes, we are finally able to hear the missing pieces. Stored on reels of Scotch analog recording tape, these recordings had laid dormant in storage for almost half a century. The previously unheard material reveals the Rallizes at some of their most unhinged and experimental, as well as moments of delicate tenderness—the two sides of Mizutani that would come to define his band’s legacy. Taken as a whole, The OZ Tapes help to demystify the band’s murky history, yet this vibrant and seemingly relatively innocent era only hints at the explosive, uncharted worlds into which Mizutani would lead the band.

77 Live is a fucking amazing record; I have a really good bootleg version with the title in French, but I will absolutely buy this new version if they've done anything noticeable about cleaning it up. Maybe the others, too.

Yeah, Live 77 is the tear-your-face-off one. Mizutani is actually mostly acoustic(!), so that's probably what you're looking for. And 67-69 live obviously is gonna be more Sixties-sounding, too.

I thought the production trick with all that PSF/High Rise/Keiji Haino stuff that came up in the wake of Rallizes was to wallop everything into the red anyway, all the better to conceal the fact it was probably recorded on a malfunctioning reel-to-reel.

Acid Seven, a bandleader and prankster who was a regular at Oz, recalled Mizutani interrupting his stoic silence at jam sessions only to utter existentialist riddles. He described Mizutani once taking a drag from his ever-present cigarette and proclaiming, “The smoke coming out of my mouth is extinguishing my ego,” with no further explanation offered.

By being totally uncompromising about the band’s sound, Mizutani effectively exiled himself from the Japanese music industry. Shime Takahashi, who played drums with the Rallizes in the mid-70s, recalled the band once working in a professional studio, only to find that the engineer never pressed record because he thought it was still rehearsing. Mizutani had been playing with the Rallizes for more than 20 years before releasing its three albums in 1991 — two sets of early recordings, and another double-CD live set of the band at its noisiest.

In a series of interviews this summer, Kubota said he had been working for months to sort through Mizutani’s collection, including numerous studio and live recordings.

“Now I have received the material for four full concerts and started working on it,” Kubota said. “It will be monstrous.”

Has anyone seen any news on the reissues? Pitchfork said the CDs would issue on 25 November, but the official website doesn't seem to have that info (it doesn't seem to be a well organised site).

Eh, I have been looking for a reasonably priced copy of '77 Live for years (certainly not paying the $130 they are currently going for), so I'll just have to deal with one that is slightly inferior.

FYI, I got an email back from the label:

The version of "The Last One" on Mizutani reminded me of Dadamah, which is some of the highest praise I can offer. The acoustic tracks on the first side are shockingly delicate.

Yeah, working my way through Citta '93 right now, absolutely incredible. Great quality.

The recording quality is pretty amazing, but...I really like the ultra-blown-out, Mainliner/High Rise-ish sound of '77 Live, and other Rallizes stuff, both earlier and later, that's more conventionally "psychedelic" doesn't really do it for me in the way their skull-squashing sonic attack material does.

Yeah I can totally get that, this is definitely "cleaner" sounding as compared to '77 Live and older boots. But I kind of like hearing it all a little more clearly and I think this epic "The Last One" still bulldozes my brain and ears.
