the feud that cut to the heart of gothdom... which way do you slide?

Our American friends should note that we are talking about what you call The Mission-UK here.

I'm a Sisters of Mercy man myself, but I reckon history has been overly unkind to the Mish.

I think we all just call them the Mission these days as well. They're playing here in three weeks...

Twelve years ago, I was scarfing down everything I could by both bands. I had no shame, no. ;-) Sisters songs hold up much better over time, I have to say -- and even with Wayne gone from the line-up, Eldritch found ways to survive.

God, are the mish still going? And what of the eskimos? Wayne Hussey + Craig Adams were formidable in the Sisters and useless in the Mission. As substantial as dry ice, as someone noted at the time.

I'd always vote for the Sisters line-up with Wayne, Craig and Gary Marx, but after the Great Goth Schism,.....

First round goes to Andrews for trumping Wayne & Craig with the SISTERHOOD e.p. (tho' that's supposedly Alan Vega crooning, not Andrew, as legalities forbade).

Second round goes to Wayne & Craig, as everything up through the TOWER OF STRENGTH single was faaaacking great, and great fun live as well.

Third round goes back to Andrew for the "This Corrosion" single (supposedly about Wayne, but whatever).

Beyond that, all parties concerned seemed to collectively lose the plot. The Mish never really made another great album (some might argue they never made a good album to begin with). FLOODLAND was great, but VISION THING was rather sad.

Ah, fuck it. I'm waiting for the inevitable Kiss-styled reunion, then I'll vote.

Always had a soft spot for the Sisters of Mercy. Utter irony, since I'm not what you call "an obvious Goth chick".

"Tower Of Strength" is unbelievably classic.

I despise both.

Sisters! The Mission is for weenies..

I always thought it was James Ray who 'sang' on the Sisterhood LP.

No real question here I reckon - the Sisters back catalogue blows the Mish away (now that sounds like a SIM lyric..), is funnier, wittier, more danceable, cleverer, and has more spangly guitar noises. And they attracted better looking fans than the Mish. Nonetheless, the 1986 Mish stuff is great and the "Serpents Kiss" video one of my all-time top five vids - doing silly goth dances by a river indeed !

I've been listening to the Mission's greatest hits album. There's a lot of shite on it. But there are some real corkers too. On balance the Sisters are far better, and a much more consistent band, despite the personnel changes.

Tower Of Strenght is total classic, though.

Sub-thread: Who would be a better Wedding Band? I wager the Mish would be a bit more versatile in that setting, no?

The March Violets own this thread.

Yowsa.

"Walk into the Sun" was nice, but the Violets were always going to be the redhead step-sibling to the Sisters.

Okay I'm sick of looking for decent threads about the freaking Mission.

I just looked up and played the first Mission (UK) 12" for the first time in 20 years and guess what?

I am still more goth than you.
