In Praise of... Smokie - "Living Next Door to Alice" / Gompie - "Who the Fuck is Alice?"

For those who don't know the story, Smokie were a glam band who had a hit in 1976 with a nice little pop tune about unrequited love called "Living Next Door to Alice." Fast-forward to the mid-90s at the Gompie cafe, where "Living Next Door to Alice" was a crowd favorite. Whenever the song's chorus was played ("I don't know why she's leaving or where she's gonna go. / I guess she's got her reasons but I just don't wanna know. / 'Cause for 24 years I've been living next door to Alice.") the DJ at the Gompie cafe would then turn the volume down and the crowd would immediately shout, "ALICE!! WHO THE FUCK IS ALICE!?!?!" Hilarious! The DJ realized the new lyric's potential as a hit record and released it as a single. The only difference from the 1976 version of the song is that one extra line, but the song became a huge hit anyway.

Who would've thought inserting a single extra line into a song would make it 10,000x better?

Oh, and a couple months later, Smokie themselves released a cover of their own song with the new lyric sung by some comedian, but the less said about that the better.

Is that Alvin and the Chipmunks or Crazy Frog?

Exact same trick was employed around the same time with that old 60s staple "Hey Baby" by Bruce Channel by some DJ from Amsterdam's Cooldown Cafe. Then jacked by Austrians finest DJ Otzi afterwards, and then inevitably by some happy hardcore dudes too.
