Awesome band. I like the old stuff just fine but their last one, Potemkin City Limits, came outta nowhere for me. Really great record.

I was never an all-the-time Propagandhi fan or anything but what I always liked about them was the fact it was really hard to get a handle on them. They had (have?) this incredibly clean sound that makes everything sound like metal riffs, but no way would you ever mistake them for a metal band. And their lyrics are unbeatably sardonic and self-reflexive/self-qualifying but there is absolutely no question of them not being serious about the stuff they talk about. In both these respects they are a lot like Dead Kennedys, but they don't sound like the Dead Kennedys. The more I type the more I sound like a superfan! But I'm not. I just like some of their tunes and the way they roll generally

I've improved my brain by delving back and buying 'Potemkin City Limits' which was released in 1963.
It's great.
More on the metal tip than 'Today's Empires.....' but still.Excellent.

band is just really great. every album enjoyable. I would rather be preached at than bored.

This is one band I've always wanted to check out but never have. I have no problem with preachy punk, I fucking love Crass & Conflict etc. I think the thing that put me off with these guys is the similarity with NOFX-ish 90s melodi-core but I know there's more to them than that.

Colonel. Start off with 'Today's Empires...'
It's melodic but not in that shitty way you reference.I'm talking seriously good melodies and playing.The lyrics aren't too bad but they're secondary to me.It's all about the music
To me there's not a duff track on the album. Those tracks that are weaker are elevated by at least one musical section in the song. There's some seriously good hardcore in the mix too

Their questionable name put me off- for years. Stupid me.

I bought 'Potemkin City Limits' second . At first it was too 'metal', but it's a real grower.

new record is very good but i find myself wanting for grounding melodic moments (see "potemkin city limits" and "human(e) meat" from the last record)

i'm listening to potemkin city limits now and its hitting me how much this is like a prog-punk precursor to some of fucked up's more recent stuff. is that a connection people a lot of other people have made?

Well I mentioned it cause listening last night I kept thinking of David Comes To Life, particularly all the really gorgeous layers done at such a high energy level.

i guess the reason i wouldn't necessarily make that connection is bc of how much later propagandhi is about straight up thrash metal, which there aren't many traces of in the proggy fucked up stuff (which is still very much about hardcore)

full confession i was p blazed and listening to 'a speculative fiction' when this comparison occurred to me, and i'd been shotgunning the early records for the last year or so til putting PCL on for the first time in years the other night, so i think the contrast was just in search of an anchor.

i think it's a neat connection to make tho! i just had never thought of that before

Starting to think Supporting Caste is every bit as good as Potemkin City Limits. So many amazing riffs and moments.

i like it sliiightly better. think it's their best record honestly even though you know less talk more rock 'til death

new album is among their best. love that these guys are still pushing their sound forward e.g. “lower order”

yeah it would feel like a transitional album except that they're always in transition these days towards some never-complete ideal, which fits with the increasingly tortured, conflicted lyrical content

i don’t have a kid but the last song on this record makes me *weep*

it hasn't supplanted "Without Love" as most emotionally bruising Propagandhi song but it's mighty close

also "A Lower Order" is probably their best animal rights song

wild in a catalog that includes "purina hall of fame" and "nailing descartes to the wall" but i agree

After 15 years I saw them live for the first time. They were incredible and I'm gonna stop myself there. Setlist was very similar to this one:

except with the additions of "Adventures in Zoochosis"(!) and "The Banger's Embrace." I could have used a few more Potemkin/Caste tunes but beyond that it was a pretty inspired set.

my shitty high school hardcore band covered "Fuck the Border" so that was particularly delightful, and of course "Back to the Motor League" is one of the greatest songs ever written and it was great to be reminded
