the terms, conditions and limitations of the interface seem to put this well within the realm of fair use. if for any reason the riaa came to him he could just shut down an offending user's subdomain. you aren't sharing files, and you can't upload an album, and you're limited to 12 tracks. people will try to fuck with it and he can just pop the accounts.

I would probably not have a problem ponying up a figure between $5-15 a year to have this. Like Whiney said, when people ask what you're listening to, you can just point them to your muxtape page, and people can give it a listen without any annoying real-life/itunes/rapidshare bushwheat
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 27 March 2008 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

― fukasaku tollbooth, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:23 (eighteen years ago)
can someone point me to a thread or a remotely informative article about the streaming royalties deal?
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 27 March 2008 20:26 (eighteen years ago)
Here's the thing Tom: there isn't one presently. It's because there isn't one that the site will be shut down since the folks behind it won't be able to play whack-a-mole on what's legal and what's not.
If you search any article related to Pandora or any other site that involves streaming royalties you'll find that these payments may crush streaming music as we know it.

i think that muxtape helped themselves by not posting any info about number of times any tape's been played, but that's just a charitable guess on my part. this site went from 0-60 in no time at all, so i'm guessing we'll find out sooner than later.

i just finished mine, and now the whole thing has disapeared. and you know i was totally beginning to think, i'd pay for this as having an online mixtape facility as clean and easy as this would be just perfect. lets hope the people behind this sort out the techno woes that they are obviously having. and yes, cant believe within 2 days the sheer scale of love the site is getting. so simple, so good, its like the birth of google all over again, but without the necessary backing.

Okay, I made a mixtape of Finnish cover versions of international pop hits, maybe someone will find it fun. Here's a list of what the original songs are:
"Kukka Hiuksissaan" = "San Francisco" "Riisu pois jo arkipaita" = "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" "Kesäkatu" = "Summer in the City" "Muukalainen" = "Starman" "Exodus" = "Exodus" "Rasputin" = "Rasputin" "Sheikki Ali Hassan" = "Hadschi Halef Omar" "Besame mucho" = ??? I don't think this is the famous "Besame mucho". "Maria Maria" = "Maria baiana Maria" "Limon limonero" = "Meu limao, meu limoeiro" "Johnny, mua muistathan" = "Johnny, Remember Me" "Niin paljon kuuluu rakkauteen" = "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing"

― J0hn D., Monday, 31 March 2008 12:59 (eighteen years ago)
indeed, and given all evidence (and intuition, really) the hard sell is not necessary here.
I am resisting the urge to make more user names just to make more mixes, because I don't think they want me to, and lordy knows their servers are taxed already. But my current mux is massively different from my first one, which was made at 3 in the morning as soon as I heard of this, and had a certain drowsy ineptitude that I kinda miss now. :( Twelve tracks is never enough.

I've deliberately uploaded mostly songs for which I've either a) received prior permission to use for my blog, or b) I'm in touch with in some form or another and I don't think they'd be bothered. The sole exception is Fall of Saigon, but you find them...

Nah, it's like 4 mb, I was getting that for a lot of 'em. BUT, I did get a number of songs to upload.

― RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 11 April 2008 08:28 (eighteen years ago)
actually, i was getting that same error for smaller files. i tried recording them using dbpoweramp/lame and it accepted them after that, so maybe it's just shitty encoding or something. weird that it suddenly got picky, though.

I don't get why some folks want to treat this like it's a real mix, it's just a playlist? I'm using mine to keep a few folks who might want to know what I'm listening to lately in the loop without having to burn and exchange CD-Rs, with the bonus of encouraging them to participate in long-tail capitalism through one of the few pay-for-song-download providers I approve of

Is this a mozilla firefox problem perhaps?
ahh, it might be. it only works about half of the time when i use firefox - some of that probably due to the old version of flashblocker that i need to replace. it usually works in opera ok (my computer is old, though, so sometimes it freezes up).
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 24 April 2008 07:29 (eighteen years ago)
I don't get why some folks want to treat this like it's a real mix[
Well, try to get some sleep in spite of that, if you can.
Real mixes take more thought and care and more fun to make, and if it's a mix of something close to your kinda thing, you get a lot more out of them.

kept getting errors on tracks I was trying to upload yesterday, it wouldn't recognize mp3s I had ripped myself (vinyl -> Audacity) as mp3s. anyone else had this problem or figured out how to solve?
― dmr, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)
i got around that by reconverting them in dbpoweramp to lame mp3s. i don't know why that works or what the problemis but it seems to do the job.

A mixtape is pretty much just a tape with a playlist on it. A mix CD is pretty much just a CD with a playlist on it. A muxtape is a playlist, yes, this is correct.

How does this work? Are mixes just a lists of tracks, or is there some way to actually listen to them?
clicking a track name just puts a small black bar at the right in internet explorer (latest version).
In firefox there are lots of bits of blocked flash at the bottom of the screen (I have flashblock) that when enabled do precisely nothing.
― mei, Thursday, 8 May 2008 12:09 (eighteen years ago)
Hmmm. After more mucking around clicking a track seems to load then play it on firefox (after enabling a load of flash), but still does nothing on ie.
― mei, Thursday, 8 May 2008 12:12 (eighteen years ago)
Okay, nearly sorted.
If you want to download the music from a muxtape use firefox, this: http://paininthetech.com/2007/10/03/fake-iphone-user-agent/ and this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59

I can't get a single mp3 to upload to the site, I just keep getting the "Error: The file you uploaded either wasn’t an mp3 or the upload was interrupted. Try it one more time, if it fails again (but plays on your computer) Muxtape can’t handle it yet." error. I've converted them to LAME mp3, edited the tags, but nothing I can think of seems to work. What in the hell am I doing wrong?

Alright, can someone just tell me if the site's just down or something? I can't get anything to upload - no matter how its tagged, how popular or obscure, mp3 format - I've now tried over a hundred different mp3 files and each one gets the same error.

The majority of the class was Indian people so I put a couple Indian songs on there that a class member sent me. For some reason, muxtape didn't let me add some songs I wanted on there like Spinto Band - Brown Boxes and some other Indian song.
1. Coldplay - Vida la Vida 2. Hall & Oates - Method of Modern Love 3. Bjork - Venus as a Boy 4. some Indian song 5. Calvin Harris - Colours 6. Roisin Murphy - Sow into You 7. Dishwalla - Counting BLue Cars 8. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps 9. some other Indian song - x shamur - let the music play 10. No Air (Duet With Jordin Sparks) 11. Geggy Tah - whoever you are 12. Is there an easy way to do searches on MUXTAPE (e.g., for a particular playlist or song, or by various categories)? I don't see any search function on the site's front page, and the only way I've been able to find playlists so far is either from the front page, thru the MUXTAPE blog or from various places outside the site itself (like here). Thx.

Okay, I've totally changed my muxtape, now it's a collection of old school trance/rave tunes from 1992-95, one of my favourite periods in electronic music:
Here's the he tracklist:
1. Marusha - We Are the Bass 2. Yello - Bostich (Westbam's Hands on Yello) 3. Hardsequencer - Broadcast 4. Microglobe - All Our Colours 5. DJ Tom & Norman - Bass 4 Love 6. Paul van Dyk - Pumpin' 7. Pascal FEOS & Dr. Atmo - Make Me Cry 8. Cristian Vogel - Small 9. Disko vs. 3Phase - Bass Overload 10. Air Liquide - Liquid Men with Liquid Hearts 11. Lazonby - Sacred Circles (Jens Mahlstedt Remix) 12. Rejuvination - Requiem (Part 1)

the two singles/widely circulated mp3s-- 'arms like boulders'/'taking the farm'-- are amazing but the rest of the ep kind of floated off to me. sounded like some of the album cuts on the peter bjorn and john album but minus the pop sensibilities (not like war on drugs need them). haven't heard the full-length yet though.

I'm using FF3 and can't get muxtape to work (and never could on earlier FF either). I have adblock and noscript installed, but have muxtape allowed in noscript, but still no joy. I get a little flash icon at the bottom of a mix page, but clicking on it doesn't get me anywhere. Is there something I'm missing?
― krakow, Saturday, 2 August 2008 06:44 (seventeen years ago)
there's something on the muxtape blog about the new version of firefox having problems. doesn't work at all with new opera, either, and i'm guessing nobody gives a shit at either opera or muxtape.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 2 August 2008 07:06 (seventeen years ago)
I hadn't ever looked at the blog, thanks.
From Jul 8th:
Adblock We recently got a bug report that helped us determine that Adblock (a popular Firefox extension) has a tendency to interfere with Muxtape. If you’re having problems with Firefox and you have Adblock installed (even if it’s disabled) it just might be the culprit. We’ll try to figure out a workaround.
But sadly there's no follow-up yet.

― The Macallan 18 Year, Saturday, 2 August 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)
Since I can't seem to get this to work for me (I'm not keen to remove adblock/no-script, or to try IE), how is it supposed to work, so that I know where to focus my frustrated clicking? The individual songs seem like they should be clickable, but then there's also this flash doohickey down at the bottom of the screen...
― krakow, Sunday, 3 August 2008 07:25 (seventeen years ago)
Weird, I use FF version 2.0.0.16 with Adblock Plus, and the it works fine with me. I haven't even disabled Adblock for the Muxtape site.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 3 August 2008 08:02 (seventeen years ago)
well, i can't listen to it buuut:
again and again and again: dutronc, blue rondos, sheridan & price, the cedars, charles lloyd, clapham junction, dry ice, serge franklin, jan panter, one in a million, american blues (pre-pre-zz top), danny mcculloch. i love the mcculloch tune, in fact, it's so chilled out. he was the bassist for the best period of the animals, the ridiculous pseudo-psych period, a left to do a mellow solo album.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 3 August 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)
I started out trying to make one for the "post your faves muxtape" thread but then I realized it was an impossible task and I'd end up leaving out too many songs, so here's my half-done, not-all-favourites one.
― Roz, Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 3 August 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)
I got inspired by the "Pure Moodz" thread on board 77, so I decided to do another Muxtape. I've always been intrigued by the idea of "authenticity" and "inauthenticity" in music, especially regarding "world music" genres, which some people seem to think are inexplicably tied to ethnicity. So I did a muxtape of songs which freely (ab)use musical ideas from other cultures: you have Finns doing reggae and bossa nova, Swiss imitating Afro-Cuban music, "traditional" music mixed with modern electronic sounds, Moroccan reggae, a Jamaican singer performing a pseudo-European tune, etc...
http://nexinexim.muxtape.com/

7. Carola - Maria Maria
8. Burhan Öçal & Jamaaladeen Tacuma - Groove Alla Turca

I completely changed my other muxtape too, now it's a gayish disco/synth pop/electro mix.
1) Herbie Hancock - Tell Everybody 2) The J.B.'s - Rock Groove Machine 3) Patrick Cowley - Menergy (12" Version) 4) Yello - Vicious Games (12" Mix) 5) Bronski Beat - I Feel Love (Medley with Marc Almond) 6) Magazine 60 - Don Quichotte (Extended Version) 7) Rockers Revenge - Walking on Sunshine (12" Mix) 8) Nona Hendryx - Too Hot to Handle 9) Grace Jones - Driving Satisfaction 10) Planet Patrol - Don't Tell Me 11) Marc Almond - Jacky 12) Shakespear's Sister - Dirty Mind (E-Zee Remix)
― Tuomas, Sunday, 17 August 2008 07:59 (seventeen years ago)
I was kinda blown away by that J.B.'s tune when I got the record... The tune is from 1979, but it totally feels like proto-house, complete with a modulating synth squeal that sounds kinda like a 303. (Though obviously it can't be a 303, since it was only released three years later.)
