MOON SAFARI by Air

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How can you listen to music while you have sex?? Don't you just feel like you're in a cheesy porn movie? It'd be like when you're trying to walk across the dance floor looking cool and purposefully NOT walk to the beat.

laurie, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never understood the whole "Moon Safari" thing, maybe because I prefer harder music during sex ... give me some good techno, or industrial ... I suppose I don't mind swirly ambience, but instead of Air's French-pop warmth I'd rather have something dark and heavy with bass. Air would feel kind of silly, and for the most part I'm serious in bed.

But I understand the whole 'porn star' thing -- going to too much trouble to find the perfect music would spoil the mood. How could you play a favorite song and not hear it and devote attention to it -- distracting you? I remember that happened one time during "Disintegration," it felt ridiculous.

whitehouse

(he steals norman's gag = he is too glum to make his own tonight), Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Personally, I think techno would be too distracting, but hey...whatever mows your lawn, y'know?

MOON SAFARI works because it's suitably ambiant and relaxed, for the most part.

Other frequent choices: BLUE LINES by Massive Attack, PROTECTION by Massive Attack, IT'LL END IN TEARS by This Mortal Coil, BLOOD by This Mortal Coil, PIECES OF MAN by Gil Scott-Heron, THE PINK OPAQUE by Cocteau Twins, MAXINQUAYE by Tricky, MAN by Neneh Cherry.

Ultimately, it's really all a matter of taste and mood. Hell, if all parties concerned are in the righ mood, it really doesn't matter what's playing, be it MY BEACH by the Surf Punks or AT WAR WITH SATAN by Venom.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You have to let things happen by accident, I've found.

Dead Can Dance, it sets a cool atmosphere.

Jordan, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, whatever it is, it sure ain't that sedative dim-lights-and- incense lounge house "groove" crap that floods every dance record store in the form of quadruple record compilations, and makes every other dance club a snooze fest.

Greetings From LA on repeat. "This is the... ugn... fourth time... I've... ugn... ugn... ugn... heard... ugn... that... ugn ugn ugn... song..."

Las night it was "Geogaddi" followed by a piece I composed for bedsprings and voice. Blonde Redhead's 1st is a favorite for when I take ol' one-eye to the optometrist. I usually don't put on specific music tho. MBV works. And you can't do much better than "Let's Get It On".

The Orb's "The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld"
Madonna's "Confessions on a Dancefloor" (twice, both times tongue in cheek)
Luscious Jackson's "Fever In Fever Out"
pretty sure someone played Dead Can Dance once

Whatever's on the Weather Channel. No joke that's where the composers of 80s porno soundtracks have gone out to pasture. But these days they're playing Christmas renditions, so you can either get into that or not.

The only other music I've listened to for sex in recent memory was we put on some trance station on Pandora. And I haven't really listened to much trance since I was a teenager, but I must say that it was pretty good for bonin'. Later on that night I tried to switch it to a Lindstrom and Prins Thomas Pandora station, and that started out alright, but devolved pretty quickly and we both burst into laughter and turned it off, with my wife saying "I can't fuck to this elevator music!"

This year, it has been Ripperton's Niwa. Many, many times. There was also a memorable encounter to Leonard Cohen's Live In London, which admittedly wouldn't have worked in any other circumstances.

Worst I ever did was the White Album. It was all good until Obla-Di-Obla-Da showed up. "oompa-oompa" is NOT sexy.

A reoccurring gag in Don McKellar's Last Night has Callum Keith Rennie's put Parliament's "I've Been Watching You (Move Your Sexy Body)" on each time he makes a conquest / crosses a act/partner type off his bucket list. Should I date another fan I'll have to put it on (for laughs, if nothing else). It segues into "Funkin' for Fun".

Once, quite coincidentally, I had some Mozart playing - forget what - and his movement's ending corresponded with ours. Whump! Whump! Whuuuuuuuuuump! At the time it was comical, and we both laughed. I don't think I've eve had music on since then.

This is a silly thread of course, very ilx circa 2002. The music - if at all - should suit both people entering the sexual arrangement iirc. It cannot be one person (ie. the ilx poster) putting on something that might be off-putting for the other person.

Havind said that, I've enjoyed great sexual synchronicity with both Natacha Atlas' 'Foretold in the Language of Dreams' and Cocteau Twins' 'Blue Bell Knoll'.

In lost my virginity to a Metallica bootleg album. I brought the poor lady back to my place with the promise of checking out some bootlegs and she got bonus bad sex.

The best musical interlude in that respect was when I was hanging out with a stripper and I played her US3. She started dancing to the single and next thing you know, I was experiencing something out of Penthouse Forum.

Needless to say, I have a very soft spot for that album.

Seriously, Rowland S Howard's Teenage Snuff Film and also the record he did with Lydia Lunch. Also HTRK - Marry Me Tonight. Clearly RSH gets me going.
