Perhaps this will be the folk album they have always had it in them to make

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

lol

I think all their albums are secretly folk, but you don't notice since they're using the wrong instruments.

StanM, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 17:19 (sixteen years ago) link

It will be full of bleeps and blips. Reviewers will give it an above-average review for being intelligent, while yearning for the old days when Autechre used to write tunes. Thom Yorke will base his 2009 solo album on it.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 23:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Autechre will discover the true meaning of atonality when they construct bloops and beeps that follow an inotation nearer to that of pure (natural) intervals, which is closely tied traditionally to tonal feeling, the sense of key. To the untrained ear you wont know what the fuck you are listening to, but it is really folk of the orient applied to synthetic sound. Imagine an autecherean gamelan.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

the max/msp argument is pretty dumb. i mean, there's any number of ways to generate algorithmic music (with max/msp even), and lots of it doesn't sound at all like autechre (who, as far as i understand it, only partially incorporate generative stuff in their compositions).

jermainetwo, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 18:59 (sixteen years ago) link

the first thing i thought was solstice which is twice a year, but they've munged it to be quarterly or maybe it was recorded around four solstice points over the past two years. how long has it been since the last lp?

Trayce, did your bf pull the trick yet? Im listening to the first track supposedly - Anterior - it's 11:25. It might be real I dunno. I don't have time to listen atm, I gotta study for finals.

Next time someone asks me to define Autechre I will say this.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 14 December 2007 03:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Anterior - I hope this isn't real. That is the chintziest melody EVER. I guess it improves at around 6:33 w/the more detailed interplay of pulses, but I dunno. I hope this is fake

Lowell N. Behold'n, Friday, 14 December 2007 04:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Well the tracklist put forth on this site doesn't mention any "Anterior." Note the number of 9s that appear in the song names.

Leee, Friday, 14 December 2007 06:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm afraid its nowt to do with me! Unless R's been up to shit I dont know about.

Trayce, Friday, 14 December 2007 06:28 (sixteen years ago) link

This Anterior track (which is quite long, and I wouldnt ezpect it to be so long with the amount of tracks supposed to be on the album) seems "chinzy" in the sense that it is lacking all the modulation expected from the sounds I'm hearing. But compared to Vi Scose Poise of confield, maybe it isn't lacking as much as I think. Overall, it sounds like IDM my friend makes so I don't think it's real. And it doesn't have any epic quality to it.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 14 December 2007 08:33 (sixteen years ago) link

The first half of "quaristice" sounds related to either "square" or "four", and 9 is a square number. Or, it's a double album, 9 is twice 4.5, and 4.5 is (the midpoint of) the interstice between four (and five). Or or, I'm making complete rubbish up. Yeah, that last one.

(Why have none of my IDM nerd internet pals who've been so excited about the last few while I've been going "eh" said anything about this? Are ae finally over even among the DSP-spotting community?)

^ Thanks for the link.

I'm a little disappointed, though, at least upon first listen. Only the final track really grabbed me. All three seemed drenched in reverb, which normally I don't mind, and certainly isn't foreign to Autechre's music, but seemed out of place here. I guess those who were put off by their algorithm-centric compositions from the past decade or so might like this, as it's more stripped down and less wacked out. The problem is that they didn't really replace that space with anything compelling.

Z S, Sunday, 27 January 2008 22:40 (sixteen years ago) link

That was my first reaction as well … though to give them a break, I usually have to hear what they do with a very high bitrate to really get all the sonic details, and it also takes me a year to 'get' what they're doing – I didn't appreciate Untilted until recently.

This kind of judgment on first listening to lowbitrate samples is what the group itself is anxious to avoid I'd imagine.

True. When I was listening to it I kept daydreaming about the DJ saying "Whoops, somehow I was sitting on the reverb button! This is what the songs really sound like, sorry!", and then playing them again. I'll still give it a fair shot when it comes out. I probably need to revisit Untilted. I only gave it about a month before I gave up.

It's weird - it's like they're taking a step back (reintroduction of apparent simplicity and melody) and one forward (order in the chaos they'd built up until now) at the same time - if that makes any sense. Think I'm going to like this, but then I like pretty much everything they've done.

StanM, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Here I was ready to write them off. Based on the Beeb and Wire exclusives, I'm excited that they've finally ditched the super-compressed Draft sound.

They essentially slag off the limited edition release in their Clash interview http://www.clashmusic.com/feature/autechre-quaristice;

It makes no odds to me. Actually, it does; I’d prefer (people) to download it than buy it physically. It fits our agenda much better that way. Our plan has never been to produce CDs - it’s always been about making music. If there’s a way of charging for it and getting the content to people, then we’ll adopt whichever is the most transparent. The actual product is the FLAC file – but I don’t object to those who want to own something that they can hold”

yeah after three albums in a row mostly featuring 5-7 minute long gradually evolving tracks, just fausting together 60 minutes worth of snippets seems like a good way to go

the board recording mp3 of the 2005 glasgow show is great. basically the same set I saw in SF at mezzanine, far more straightforward & clubby than anything they put on albums (though the acid numbers on this new one come close)

To those still hoping for a return to the old Autechre sound:

I have just settled down and listened to Incunabula and Amber and realized, in retrospect, how cheesy they were, and how contrasted our newer ideas are. Even though I might still think we're still banging out big riffs and big beats and whatever sort of cinematic, cheesy moments, you just realize that you're too close.

I tend to agree with his assessment, although I'm sure many people would think him loony for saying such a thing.

skimmed thru this on bleep. first track is nice, simm begins really well but loses it a bit for me. the only other thing i like is bnc castl - the temptation to stick a massive kickdrum under it is proving great.

I only listened to the first hour or two, which was pretty much solid hip-hip/electro. Tuned in a while later to hear the somewhat obscure early Depeche Mode b-side "Now This Is Fun", which they also played on their 2005 webcast.

If whatever I've downloaded here is the new Autechre album, I'm very happy with it - but doesn't it sound different from everything else? Here I was, waiting for another bunch of ever-randomising clunkjams and here is something that's actually a lot of fun!

Jordan, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 23:26 (sixteen years ago) link

So the london gig was night was in a fucking car park. Roofed but a bit short on walls, only about half a dozen coats were in the cloakroom, it was so cold. And the bar didn't take cash, you had to buy tokens... which were sold in blocks of £10 minimum. Massive cuntitude. And no re-entry, which scuppered my plan of nipping out to a local boozer till they came on at 12.30am.

They weren't as headfucky as that review suggests. If you've seen them any time over the last ten years then they were pretty much the same, which is fine if you like that kind of thing. And I do. Really excellent rhythms, it felt like they'd invented half a dozen on the spot, never heard before and never to be heard again. Weird noises and screeches yes, but they rarely destroyed the groove. And definite old-skool ae melodies, strings and glockenspiels, bubbling underneath. Virtually all new as far as I could tell, only recognised a couple of melodic snippets from Quaristice.

Did start to feel a leeeedle bit samey about halfway through though.

ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:23 (sixteen years ago) link

LOLs at ADM talk in Guardian review. Welcome to the 90s son.

Also LOLs at "their own music is scrambled and mashed-up beyond recognition. Vaguely danceable rhythms are suddenly destroyed by sonic screeches" coz everyone there was wanting the straight four to the floor of their last few LPs I guess.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Ooops, IDM not ADM. Dunno what ADM is--Autistic Dance Music I suppose.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:27 (sixteen years ago) link

ah but live cough idm cough, even ae, always has been more four to the floor and danceable than the records (which always led me to wonder exactly what records they were playing and how could i get them. never did figure it out.)

Support from Rob Hall (standard IDM dj set, see above) and SND, who played... just beats. No melodies. Virtually devoid of interesting rhythms, even. It reminded me of the standard complaints about ae - cold, abstract - but this lacked any of their complexity, it was totally transparent. Didn't do it for me at all.

ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:30 (sixteen years ago) link

A good gig I think - I was entirely sober and yet completely lost track of time - seemed to last about five minutes, and I don't think I fell asleep. The wall of bass did get a bit much at times - submerged almost everything else. And yes, quite chilly. And a lot of people there could have done with a more recent bath or change of clothes.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:44 (sixteen years ago) link

no wai! i set my alarm for an hour later 'cause i needed a bit more sleep after the gig, or i'd have heard that, and probably would have freaked me right out. now i'll have to install realplayer, hmph.

xp. well maybe not four to the floor as such, but more consistent and more danceable. imho i guess.

ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:54 (sixteen years ago) link

The .ram file isn't actually what was broadcast, it's an extended version of the interview - the bit on the radio was shorter but had vox pops from last night etc.

koogs, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Not when I've seen 'em really.

There was a fair bit to get down to when I saw them circa the last album, and the new one has some straight passages of electro-y stuff that I don't think people could consider onjectionably undanceable. Also not being a dick but I can't think of when Dave Simpson has ever expressed an interest in dance music (but I don't maintain davesimpson.xls or owt)

I liked bits of the limited edition CD all right, some of the pieces sound better when allowed to wander all over the place to their natural improv endings instead of being clipped off. but there's a lot of overlap & the obvious point of this whole casually-edited pile-of-tracks project is to force us to do our own editing

this band has always made such beautiful albums that I love listening to all the way through, but I shouldn't have even bothered with the physical version of this one, it's inherently an ipod project

Yeah, I'm listening to the new remixes most too. Track 3 very very dark. A poster noted on WATMM that the first track PLC ccc is a chopped and screwed version of the Quaristice track.

Unfortunately most of the other posters there are sulking that they are not getting a live soundboard recording that they feel they as fans are entitled to, and as a result trashing this release in a fit of pique. Knobbers.

I like that... insidious. I could usually hang with the dissonant nervous freaky shit from the last couple of records that would clear out any room, but this is different than that. It's oogy. It makes me feel unwell.

what songs?

CaptainLorax, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:33 (fifteen years ago) link

they put out 13 tracks (in high-res .mp3 and .flac formats, downloadable from bleep.com) that are mostly (lengthly, one track is approx. 59 minutes and very minimal) variations of the album tracks 'perlence' and '901010>>|-|'. There is a radical remix of the track 'the Plc', which is a highlight. It is also the first track that was released.

the regular album tracks are far more succinct and already contain most of the highlights. the only worthwhile track on the limited, 2xCD deluxe edition was an extended (and more developed) version of The Plc.

six months pass...

Out of any 2008 release that I spent a good chunk of time listening to, Quaristice is the one that completely dropped off the face of the Earth for me. And it was true for others, apparently - while 1678 other albums were mentioned in the 2008 Pazz+Jop list, Autechre makes no appearance.

Anyone still listening to this? What's the diagnosis (time of death, etc)?

the maximum value that ZS obtains given its constraint is 8 (Z S), Saturday, 24 January 2009 02:09 (fifteen years ago) link

while 1678 other albums were mentioned in the 2008 Pazz+Jop list, Autechre makes no appearance.

Funny, I noticed this as well and almost noted it in the P&J thread.

ilxor, Saturday, 24 January 2009 03:14 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm not a big Autechre fan, so haven't listened to this one more than, say, twice. Both times were the week I bought it, probably.

ilxor, Saturday, 24 January 2009 03:14 (fifteen years ago) link

I kinda forgot about it too

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 January 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, one thing to remember P&J is a collection of top 10s. I can see how none of these 500 people thought it was one of the 10 best albums of the year, even those who liked it.

Mark, Saturday, 24 January 2009 04:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I listened to a few tracks off it tonight on iTunes, still sounds just fine...?

ilxor, Saturday, 24 January 2009 05:29 (fifteen years ago) link

but doesn't Pazz&Jop and other "best of year X" lists for that matter tend to favor albums that come out closer to the end of the year?

personally, I have listened to this album (and for that matter the new Squarepusher album) a lot this year (Itunes sez 11 times for Quaristice), and dug both records. But a certain number of folks that would have had more loyalty/interest say 5 years ago are just not noticing how truly strong these albums are.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Saturday, 24 January 2009 07:03 (fifteen years ago) link

I listened to this album more times than it deserved. 901010 |-| etc. is a worthwhile track. and the opening wafts. otherwise it's garbage.

Lowell N. Behold'n, Saturday, 24 January 2009 08:08 (fifteen years ago) link

I gave the album a good few listens and it didn't blow me away (tho' I certainly wouldn't say it's 'garbage') but then I basically overwhelmed myself by getting the album and the bonus disc and all the digital EPs and the Japanese bonus track - 45 tracks in total. Too much to take in. 'Altichyre' off the bonus disc is boooooootiful though.
