I've been watching these daily and still manage to come to tears every time.

I can't decide if Clapton or Santana is my favorite - Santana, overall, has the funniest ensemble humors - the interplay between the keyboardist and Carlos is priceless. But Clapton's facial expressions and body language make for a funnier subject of focus.

I've emailed this to many friends and relatives without explanation and it's amazing how many of them are like "what's wrong with Clapton? When is this from?" Hahahaha....

It may not be music you dig, but you'll be able to appreciate his musicianship - the guy gets great tone, he's doing his thing, hits some really beautiful chords...even if you don't like it, you can space out with SV a little. Now scroll up and play the one that says "steve vai shreds." See how the music, from the first second, is really, really terrible? but how the audiene applauds anyway?

The first one I watched, I couldn't tell if somebody had rerecorded the part or just ran it through some kind of anti-autotuner or maybe it was the actual recovered part from the original gig that had later been overdubbed/tweaked/buried in the mix to sound better. Like one of those Linda Macca backing vocals.

well yeah that too... but it's the amateur quality of the playing which initially made me laugh.

My favorite shredder is the guy with Santana on the timbales.

for me, the appeal is the starkness of the audio setting. the background accompaniment and the audience roars are just reduced to feet shuffling and canned polite applause audio looped from a cheap sound effects cd. It's a bit like that first Neil Hamburger single "Looking For Laughs" except these videos are even better. Even better are the low key or abstract vocal submissions.

The guitar playing sounds like Paul Leary minus effects which I doubt was intentional.

It's great that he's started adding the other instruments, the ones where you only hear the guitar but can see a full band playing aren't quite as awesome. plus, more jokes!

I think it really helps that the sounds are exactly what come out if I try to play. The way the amp makes some rubbish noise, the notes sound off and there's loads of dicking round, yet still the audience are treating them with reverence.

That and Vai's face, which is also hilarious in the real video.

I love it when, like Slash, they stop playing for a moment and run to a different part of the stage.

And Bruce Dickinson going "It's the monster!" made me lose it.

These videos make me sad. Why? Because I find them kind of amusing but not laugh-out-loud funny. To be honest, I started with the Clapton one, and figured out after a minute or so that the music wasn't what he was actually playing. But I didn't understand that the music was supposed to sound COMICALLY AND CATASTROPHICALLY WORSE than what he was actually playing. And that made me feel it must be the case that I don't actually understand what makes music work at all, and maybe I should just stop listening to it, even though I think of myself as liking and appreciating it.

These are all great. My only complaint - and it's a minor one, all told - is that all other players are heard *only* when on-screen. Kind of works against the suspension of disbelief that makes these videos so wonderful.

I showed these to a roomful of people last night: 75% were in absolute hysterics, and 25% were utterly annoyed and unamused. I think StSanders has accidently stumbled upon some kind of weird humor litmus test here.

As for me, they make me laugh so hard I can barely breathe.

yeah i played this for some french people and one guy - an avant-garde jazz drummer - was in absolute hysterics, the others had no idea why it was funny; when they finally got it they were amused, but more by our amusement than by the video itself

To be clear, I'm not trying to say that some people "pass" and others "fail." The people who were annoyed and unamused in the room completely understood the concept and the joke, they just thought it wasn't at all funny. The whole thing really made me wonder about the differences between people's humor, and for some reason reactions to the shred videos really demonstrate those differences to a degree I don't think I've seen before.

I'm not sure if they author's intent was to have the production of the hoax sound purposefully amateurish or not.

I think it helps to have been around people who have played more or less in that style (or to have been such a person). Helps you understand just what the difference between a crap sound and a "pro" sound is, since that's one of the really amazing devices in these things. They sound more or less like something someone would actually play--just not those people, in those settings.

Also I was listening to "Saints" by Marc Ribot and the first track kind of reminded me of some of this stuff... (better obv.)

These are so hysterical that they've gotta be fakes. Real people aren't capable of that much disjointed noodling. The camera angles are similarly cut-up, so it must have been edited together. And the intermittent applause must have been dubbed in. Right? Right?

Uhh, ok, I've actually watched these again now, paying more attention to the guitarist's fingers. Whoever did these did a good job. Still, a three-necked guitar is funny no matter what you play.

Dude, I was watching some concert salute to Roy Orbison on VH1 Classic late one night -- it was from the late '80s, around the Traveling Wilburys time... there was a big mega superstar jam going on to "Pretty Woman" -- Roy sang a few verses, then it veered off into Clapton, Tom Petty, etc. (I forget who they all were) playing on and on and on. all I could think of was how utterly perfect that jam segment looked for the StSanders treatment. I was delighted just imagining it, while watching the goofy video of those guys playing and mugging...

I don't know where else to post this, but 10 years ago on YouTube there was a version of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" where the vocal track was about a quarter second behind the beat, and it was hilariously bad, and I can't stop thinking about it today.

I heard an anecdote from David Gamson (producer / Scritti Politti member) where he found that the separate tracks in the Pet Sounds box sit together perfectly in Protools. So he pitch shifted some of them so they were just out and made a mixdown. Then, when he next had guests round for dinner, he started a conversation along the lines of "Don't get me wrong, I like the Beach Boys but their tuning could have been better" and played them the mixdown when they asked what the heck he was talking about.
