The more I watch them, the more helpless with laughter I get. It's the occasional applause sounds that do it, I think.

That drummer is clearly taking the piss - ba dum pish!

snoball, Monday, 22 October 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

The Jake E. Lee one is my favorite.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 22 October 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

The Metallica one is amazing.

Jordan, Monday, 22 October 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

-- Milton Parker, Thursday, 20 September 2007 00:57 (1 month ago) Link

(I usually started people on the Eric Clapton because it's the most plausible and disarming, then once warmed up, into the Metallica / Van Halen / Santana and then the Jake E Lee is the knockout)

stsanders' little comments for each video are key ("02:46-03:10 hyper improvisation jam") and anyone who has Focus- Hocus Pocus (live '73) on his favorites = my kind of fellow

Milton Parker, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

oh shit new iron maiden one!!

oh my God the maiden one

J0hn D., Monday, 22 October 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

Jake E. Lee one is a champ, too.

roxymuzak, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

yeah the clapping on the Jake E Lee one (not the audience, the Ozzy claps) are so sad and wonderful and hilarious

J0hn D., Monday, 22 October 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

i don't get it either. LOL old guys playing guitar...?

I love how the drums are always made by some 1993 casio keyboard

filthy dylan, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

deeznuts, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

the keyboard at about 1:14 in the Santana one is just the greatest thing of all time

ethan it's not "lengthy and abstract," it's "comic"

J0hn D., Monday, 22 October 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

I've been watching these daily and still manage to come to tears every time.

I can't decide if Clapton or Santana is my favorite - Santana, overall, has the funniest ensemble humors - the interplay between the keyboardist and Carlos is priceless. But Clapton's facial expressions and body language make for a funnier subject of focus.

I've emailed this to many friends and relatives without explanation and it's amazing how many of them are like "what's wrong with Clapton? When is this from?" Hahahaha....

Davey D, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

also "terrible" but everything's just in synch enough to plausible (almost)

xpost

Jordan, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

ethan still doesnt seem to get it

chaki, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

My favorite is the Van Halen one where it goes into a brief bit of "Iron Man"--dudes, I was on the floor....dying!

JN$OT, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

maybe one of you geniuses can explain it better

and what, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

the opposite of this

chaki, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

the subjects of these videos are generally regarded as great guitarists. but the music is...not that good!

gff, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

Favorite moments:

Keyboard player in Clapton vid @ 0:38
Percussion dude in Santana vid @ 0:26 saying something into the mic
Fuck it, the whole Santana vid

Davey D, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

The first of these I saw made me gently smile once. If I don't find them funny more than once does that mean I have no joy in my heart? They just seem funny like ironic cover versions are funny, i.e. never-to-once and barely.

caek, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

got it during the slash one

i have such a faint idea of how clapton plays anything except the radio hits that, watching that one first, i was just like "err whats the big deal?"

Mark Clemente, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

funnier than these videos = picturing aw trying to decipher spinal tap

i dont get the big joke of sitting through a 5 minute guitar solo video to find out that rock music isnt very interesting to listen to

and what, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

hhaaahahaha ethan you really don't get these at all

J0hn D., Monday, 22 October 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

J0hn D., Monday, 22 October 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

J0hn you are killing me

Davey D, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the Clapton one somehow seems too good (or at least somewhat more plausible than some of the others).

JN$OT, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

They're not actually playing what we are hearing, Ethan! Get it?

JN$OT, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, the passion of Yancey

Davey D, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

also re these vids: its not so much the "concept" of the videos but the execution. for example: slash's whistling just sounds fucking funny.

chaki, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

I get them. They are not very funny though.

caek, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

I'm gonna do a me version of "Long Kiss Goodnight" to make a video for E so he can share our joy in this stuff

srsly tho E if you go to that sound opinions thread, scroll down 'til you find the actual video of Steve Vai shredding on his triple-neck. It may not be music you dig, but you'll be able to appreciate his musicianship - the guy gets great tone, he's doing his thing, hits some really beautiful chords...even if you don't like it, you can space out with SV a little. Now scroll up and play the one that says "steve vai shreds." See how the music, from the first second, is really, really terrible? but how the audiene applauds anyway?

I can't even think about these without getting the giggles

J0hn D., Monday, 22 October 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

oh fuck the steve vai one is so amazing, I mean the way he just...stops. for no reason. and then starts up and plays some horrible scramble of notes and then stops again. and then everybody claps. gaaaah

J0hn D., Monday, 22 October 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

I love Tony Levin in the Van Halen one.

Davey D, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

well trying to explain them to slow guys kind of take the funny out. thanks ilm.

chaki, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

chaki that's a damned lie and you know it, there is nothing that can ever diminish the funny of when the keyboard guy in the santana one starts playing "the final countdown"

J0hn D., Monday, 22 October 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Clapton's initial bend at like 0:04 is beyond classic.

Davey D, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

Davey have you watched the Steve Vai one

J0hn D., Monday, 22 October 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. Oh yes.

Davey D, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

Goddamn, Vai's facial expressions during those fretboard slides might be the best thing in the history of A/V.

Davey D, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ everything

roxymuzak, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

max, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

I was wondering that chaki - I mean, I'm hardly a great musician but I do play and I wonder whether that just attunes your ear so that the second Vai does that opening slide you go 'wait dude's amp sounds like it cost a dollar'

J0hn D., Monday, 22 October 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

Chaki cracks the code

Davey D, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

Not for musicians only by any means. It's funny to me, and I don't play anything at all. Of course, I saw Derek Bailey at Tonic.

unperson, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

The first one I watched, I couldn't tell if somebody had rerecorded the part or just ran it through some kind of anti-autotuner or maybe it was the actual recovered part from the original gig that had later been overdubbed/tweaked/buried in the mix to sound better. Like one of those Linda Macca backing vocals.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

For the crowd to go wild at that and go "Oh, yeah,Iron Man!", that's funny.

Danny Mendez never expected to become an internet sensation. When he first created "Flaming Shot Disaster Montage," he was just out for a laugh. "My buddies and I really liked watching the flaming shot mishap clips, like where a dude would spit out the shot and light a girl's hair on fire, and I had the idea to put a bunch of them together set to Green Day."

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

"If I actually played like that, perhaps I could finally be on MTV and in Rolling Stone and have a real career," said Ojala's original target, virtuoso guitarist Vai, through a spokeswoman for his label, Epic Records.

aww, somebody's bitter :>

Jordan, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

Vai o vaiii

I actually detuned my guitar slightly yesterday with the intention of doing this to a Mountain Goats clip. Then I realized that it would take a lot of time, what with me having zero video-editing experience and zero audience-cheer samples. Bummer.

the hip hop equivalent would be a clip of someone considered to be "one of the greatest MCs ever" but overdubbed with someone with really amateur skills/flow...

but maybe the genius of these clips is that the guy is actually a good musician pretending to be a bad musician...

kind of like in a movie about acting and the actor has to "act" (Mulholland Drive deconstructs this well), and the viewer can tell the difference.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

jhøshea, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

well yeah that too... but it's the amateur quality of the playing which initially made me laugh.

My favorite shredder is the guy with Santana on the timbales.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

for me, the appeal is the starkness of the audio setting. the background accompaniment and the audience roars are just reduced to feet shuffling and canned polite applause audio looped from a cheap sound effects cd. It's a bit like that first Neil Hamburger single "Looking For Laughs" except these videos are even better. Even better are the low key or abstract vocal submissions.

The guitar playing sounds like Paul Leary minus effects which I doubt was intentional.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

It's great that he's started adding the other instruments, the ones where you only hear the guitar but can see a full band playing aren't quite as awesome. plus, more jokes!

I think it really helps that the sounds are exactly what come out if I try to play. The way the amp makes some rubbish noise, the notes sound off and there's loads of dicking round, yet still the audience are treating them with reverence.

That and Vai's face, which is also hilarious in the real video.

These videos make me sad. Why? Because I find them kind of amusing but not laugh-out-loud funny. To be honest, I started with the Clapton one, and figured out after a minute or so that the music wasn't what he was actually playing. But I didn't understand that the music was supposed to sound COMICALLY AND CATASTROPHICALLY WORSE than what he was actually playing. And that made me feel it must be the case that I don't actually understand what makes music work at all, and maybe I should just stop listening to it, even though I think of myself as liking and appreciating it.

Subsequent to being hired as a transcriber, Vai did overdubs on many of the guitar parts for Zappa's album You Are What You Is. Thereafter he became a full-fledged band member, going on his first tour with Zappa in the Autumn of 1980. One of those early shows with Vai on guitar, recorded in Buffalo was released in 2007. While touring with Zappa's band, Vai would sometimes ask audience members to bring musical scores and see if he could sight-read them on the spot. Zappa referred to Steve as his "little Italian virtuoso" and was listed in liner notes as "stunt guitar" or "impossible guitar parts."

chaki, Thursday, 25 October 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

true story about a famous old mothers groupie names 'laurel'

His name is Stevie Vai,
And he's a crazy guy
Last November, I recall,
He needed a spanking

He decided then
A female specimen
Would be exciting for a night
To give him a spanking

Laurel was her name
She came to Notre Dame
He told me just the other night
He oughta be thanking
Her for the spanking

She was large and soft
And she beat him off
Made him drool upon his dork
And gave it a wanking
After the spanking

Hair brush!
Oh! What a hair brush!

Then did she exclaim:
"There's another game
That we can play with this device,
And then a banana!"

It was slightly green
Vapors in between
Rising up to fill the room
And COOK the banana

Later in the dawn,
Laurel carried on
Got right up and dressed herself and
Ate the banana

I showed these to a roomful of people last night: 75% were in absolute hysterics, and 25% were utterly annoyed and unamused. I think StSanders has accidently stumbled upon some kind of weird humor litmus test here.

As for me, they make me laugh so hard I can barely breathe.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

the litmus test comment above really fascinates me.

To be clear, I'm not trying to say that some people "pass" and others "fail." The people who were annoyed and unamused in the room completely understood the concept and the joke, they just thought it wasn't at all funny. The whole thing really made me wonder about the differences between people's humor, and for some reason reactions to the shred videos really demonstrate those differences to a degree I don't think I've seen before.

J, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure if they author's intent was to have the production of the hoax sound purposefully amateurish or not.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 03:40 (eighteen years ago)

I think it helps to have been around people who have played more or less in that style (or to have been such a person). Helps you understand just what the difference between a crap sound and a "pro" sound is, since that's one of the really amazing devices in these things. They sound more or less like something someone would actually play--just not those people, in those settings.

Also I was listening to "Saints" by Marc Ribot and the first track kind of reminded me of some of this stuff... (better obv.)

These Robust Cookies, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 08:30 (eighteen years ago)

These are so hysterical that they've gotta be fakes. Real people aren't capable of that much disjointed noodling. The camera angles are similarly cut-up, so it must have been edited together. And the intermittent applause must have been dubbed in. Right? Right?

I tried dialing these up this morning in search of a laff, and found they're gone -- what a mega bummer. Hopefully the dude will put them all back up on a website of his own.

It's cool he was on Kimmel, but yeah -- watching him do it live obviously isn't how the humor "works"! (It was funny how they had Slash come up at the end, as if to "show him up" -- though maybe it was meant to be a friendly jam session, hard to tell.)

morris pavilion, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

I thought the thing on Kimmel was cute.

Dear internet, just because producers try to take something hermetic and insular like a dude editing videos in his room, and make it interesting for television, does not mean they don't "get it"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

how great would it have been if after slash came up, dude dropped his funny-bad style and totally outshredded him.

Jordan, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, for reals. (They didn't select very good clips -- the Slash one he was playing along with barely had any shots of Slash's fingers/guitar -- though maybe the guy himself chose them, who knows. I think you really have to watch the entire clips to appreciate his deal... the laughs come in how they "develop," with the weird pauses, etc... but yeah, it's cool they tried.)

Dude, I was watching some concert salute to Roy Orbison on VH1 Classic late one night -- it was from the late '80s, around the Traveling Wilburys time... there was a big mega superstar jam going on to "Pretty Woman" -- Roy sang a few verses, then it veered off into Clapton, Tom Petty, etc. (I forget who they all were) playing on and on and on. all I could think of was how utterly perfect that jam segment looked for the StSanders treatment. I was delighted just imagining it, while watching the goofy video of those guys playing and mugging...

Many thanks Big Hoos aka the steendriver.

Any idea how I can save this work of the world's greatest at the top of their game.

The Clapton one particularly should be buried in a time capsule. Along with the great man himself. Immediately!

three months pass...

i can't do a proper search for these clips anymore - not since some dude developed a hairbrain scheme to imitate the original idea, but in a way that's not funny at all. and he's done a whole bunch of them, somehow missing the point that the guitar overdubs are meant to sound amateurish. take it easy on the legit, rehearsed pentatonics, bro!

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 05:40 (eighteen years ago)

that Steve Vai one is priceless. He HAD to be one of the dudes that complained. It makes him look like such an ass.

rockapads, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 06:06 (eighteen years ago)

It was Malmsteen who complained no? He's a total fuckwit anyway

Some tonight (Conan?) show actually had StSanders and Slash playing together, so I doubt it was him.

S-, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 06:47 (eighteen years ago)

They said 3 guitarists complained and mentioned he thought Vai and Malmsteen were two of them.

There's some collective of guys (forget their "band" name) that's done 100+ of these sorts of full-band play-along "shreds". Some of them are awful or stiff, but a few (Journey's "Any Way You Want It"; Human League's "Keep Feeling Fascination"; Danzig's "Mother"!!!) are beyond great.

My bad if they've been posted already.

St Sanders is probably the most accomplished (was he not also the original shred video maker?) but the Beach Boys' I Get Around and Johnny and June Carter Cash's Jackson both still leave me gasping for air

The best shreds are definitely for me the guitar-heavy mainstream rock/pop-rock - the Focus tune seems about the absolute limit. Any further and we're going down the Captain Beefheart shreds route.

I don't know if it's an actual 'shreds' video or a 'musicless' music video as the title implies but it's sort of the same concept.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 28 November 2019 04:24 (six years ago)

ok I see now by looking at the related videos that the 'musicless music video' is another thing but they live in the same awkward universe as the shreds ones. I'll be right back I will be watching as many as I can.

two years pass...

I don't know where else to post this, but 10 years ago on YouTube there was a version of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" where the vocal track was about a quarter second behind the beat, and it was hilariously bad, and I can't stop thinking about it today.

Attached by piercing jewelry (bernard snowy), Thursday, 7 July 2022 14:33 (three years ago)

I heard an anecdote from David Gamson (producer / Scritti Politti member) where he found that the separate tracks in the Pet Sounds box sit together perfectly in Protools. So he pitch shifted some of them so they were just out and made a mixdown. Then, when he next had guests round for dinner, he started a conversation along the lines of "Don't get me wrong, I like the Beach Boys but their tuning could have been better" and played them the mixdown when they asked what the heck he was talking about.
