There should have been a "no" option. :)

Jordan, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:43 (sixteen years ago) link

But I voted for Scofield for his 90s records.

Jordan, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I just got that Tal Farlow Quadromania thing, mostly for the Savoy trio sessions with Mingus and Red Norvo, but basically the whole thing is incredible... probably still gonna vote for Grant Green, though, because Idle Moments was the album that really got me into jazz.

bernard snowy, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

does that django guy count as jazz?

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Why not?

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:48 (sixteen years ago) link

FUCK, HOW DID I NOT PUT HIM ON THE LIST?!

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I specifically remember typing his name, then thinking "I'll move him down the list so he's not next to all my other favorites." I must have forgotten to move him.

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

So I guess if you want to vote Django, just write in Django and we'll tally the numbers.

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Shall I go ahead and make an uninformed vote? I know one guy and I like him.

dean ge, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

You filthy swine.

Grant Green.

Brandon Ross? Masujaa?

Oilyrags, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:58 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess I could have included William Ash too. And Jeff Parker

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I already forget who I voted - Jim Hall? I'm fucking beat tired.

SHARROCK

Rock Hardy, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Most underrated - Bauer

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I gotta lot of love for a lot of these dudes, but I think it's going to inevitably be Sonny.

Oilyrags, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Sharrock gets huge love on ILM. I won't be surprised if he wins.

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Oooh! Wait! Ben Monder--really under-rated, and what about Lenny Breau?

Jubalique die Zitronen, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I also thought of Ben Monder too late.

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyway, I have a hunch that the Paul Motian Trio's version of "Tinkle Trinkle" with Frisell handling the monk-chords might make you think twice about such intolerance.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:02 (sixteen years ago) link

The fact that I have to choose between McLaughlin and Joe Pass is a fucking crime though.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Got "Ask the Ages"? That's the one to have, if you have to only have one (but luckily you don't.)

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Another underrated dude (admittedly I only know him from one Oscar Pettiford session) - Atilla Zoller.

I left out Pete Cosey because I think of him more as a rock guy who played on some fusion albums, but I don't really know him that well.

Django, but Grant Green is pretty great too.

talrose, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Guitar is the Sharrock to have, but Ask the Ages is almost as good.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:23 (sixteen years ago) link

There's a Sharrock collection on eMusic that has a few Ask the Ages cuts. I think it's the one title they have of his, so it'll be easy to find.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Does anyone else think Joe Pass is just a flashy robot? I might've heard the wrong stuff...

Rich Smörgasbord, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 02:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I never cared much for Joe Pass - even the "Virtuoso" recordings everyone raves about. I think "robot" is harsh, but he's kind of like the Oscar Peterson of guitar.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 02:29 (sixteen years ago) link

"like the Oscar Peterson of guitar"

This is rather otm, but that's part of what I like about him.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 02:29 (sixteen years ago) link

He's a little too perfect and pleasant all the time.

I do like the Joe Pass/Herb Ellis stuff. Have you guys ever heard them do Seven Come Eleven live? Holy fuck!

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 02:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Jim Hall has the touch.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 02:48 (sixteen years ago) link

A lot of these guys are not really jazz (Sonny Sharrock is a rock/r&b guitarist for sure). Pat Metheny's playing with Ornette is probably my favorite jazz guitar but he's disqualified with the relentless tastelessness of his other stuff. I can't remember who I voted for already, either Jim Hall or Freddie Green.

For the most part, guitar solos in jazz are really boring.

theboyqueen, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 04:05 (sixteen years ago) link

"A lot of these guys are not really jazz"

lol dude you're a treat

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 05:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Perhaps I worded that incorrectly. It is difficult for me to compare what Freddie Green did and what Sonny Sharrock did. Better?

theboyqueen, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 07:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Brandon Ross? Masujaa?
-- Oilyrags

Exactly!
Also - Richard Leo Johnson.

t**t, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 08:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Django Reinhardt vote here

But for early jazz, you left out Eddie Lang and Lonnie Johnson too.

bendy, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 11:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I do like Jim Hall, but I'm going with Derek Bailey.

2for25, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 12:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I left out Pete Cosey because I think of him more as a rock guy who played on some fusion albums

fair enough. actually I have no idea what Cosey did besides those Miles albums, was he a session guy in Chicago R&B?

but Derek Bailey, who is great, seems only tangentially connected to jazz too. and Eliott Sharp couldn't swing w/a machine gun @ his nutz.

m coleman, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 12:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think old Del Bailey would have been very chuffed to be described as a jazz guitarist

Tom D., Tuesday, 26 June 2007 12:49 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah Cosey did Chess Studios stuff but even before that he played in ex-Sun Ra sideman and AACM co-founder Phil Cohran's group Artistic Heritage Ensemble. so he comes from a jazz background.

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Django.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I miss Cosey on this, another "rock guy who played on some fusion albums" and, like Cosey, did it very well-Tommy Bolin.

I'll go with McLaughlin for "Noonward Race" alone.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:50 (sixteen years ago) link

tommy bolin! he's much more of a rock guitarist than cosey -- a great one in my estimation -- and yeah his fusion stuff w/billy cobham and others is good. as is his fusion-y 1st album Teaser.

m coleman, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Charlie Christian is the best.

BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Confession: I've never heard note one from Derek Bailey.
Further confession: I used to have a coupla albums by Django and Wes, but in general (Philistine rockist that I am), the only jazz guitarists I've ever paid much attention to are the so-called fusioneers - the ones who turn the amplifiers UP. I've never cared much for that fairly bland tone that is standard for jazz guitar (or used to be.)

Of the ones above, the only ones I've listened to a lot are McLaughlin, Sharrock and Ulmer. And of those three, I've gotta say John McLaughlin, largely to counteract all the ILM hate he receives on occasion. And for "Noonward Race". (Magill OTM.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 16:32 (sixteen years ago) link

McLaughlin is great on Mahvishnu stuff, Shakti, Miles records, etc., and deserves more credit than most just for that. But he's committed a long, seemingly unending string of jazz crimes. Also, fuck Friday Night in San Fransisco. That shit SUCKS

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Ok, it doesn't really SUCK, but it's super corny

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Is that the guitar trio stuff?

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, Al DiMeola/Paco DeLucia/McLaughlin. Always gets repped by guitar doods.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 16:45 (sixteen years ago) link

ponytails + Steve Vai guitar w/handhold cutout

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 16:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Jordan -- that's wot you'd like to vote for?

t**t, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 17:11 (sixteen years ago) link

No, that = guitar doods.

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 17:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Hmmm...now that you mention it, I believe I only have two McLaughlin "solo" albums in total, and I've heard almost nothing he's done from the 80s onward, which could indeed conceivably suck. But damn, how many classic albums did he play on during 1969-72 alone? A dozen?

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 17:15 (sixteen years ago) link

"My Goals Beyond" totally kills.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 17:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Charlie Christian is the best

Sure enough, he plays like a guy with his hat tipped back.

Rich Smörgasbord, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, he's definitely on enough great albums to make up for even a lifetime's worth of lousy albums. No pun intended, as the Lifetime albums are really good.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Does Chet Atkins count? Or Danny Gatton?

Jubalique die Zitronen, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 22:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm probably lame but I'm voting for John McLaughlin. His playing with Miles is off the friggin chain.

DJANGO. *secret door to speakeasy opens*

Granny Dainger, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 23:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Pete Cosey is on Electric Mud.

I don't think jazz guitar has really hit its zenith, there are some great players but there are few of these guys which are as amazing as writers. I think partially because there was alot more money to be made by guitarists playing other music without as much hard work.

The 70s and 80s were really good for jazz guitar. During this time for the first time the guitar became a more acceptable instrument in music schools. I think this is another major reason jazz guitar has not had as many important players as other instruments. Well that and you don't get into marching band playing guitar or at least it didn't happen much in the 40s to 60s.

Ralph Towner and Terje Rypdal probably also deserve to be on a list such as this one. They both have made some good records and have a unique sound for a "jazz guitarist".

earlnash, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 23:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I wouldn't put Electric Mud on my resume! ;-)

I voted for Grant Green (am session completist nerd), but might have chosen Johnny Smith too if he had been listed (which he probably deserved).

I also really like Jimmy Bruno but he is just more of a tip to anyone who might care than that he should have been on the list.

Saxby D. Elder, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 00:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Bruno's a great guitar teacher too.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 01:26 (sixteen years ago) link

OK I was riding the M11 bus up 10th ave in Manhattan this eve and a grey haired older black guy w/guitar got on board at 48th. I won't say he looked EXACTLY like the late Sonny Sharrock but the resemblence was strong enough to freak me out, esp. considering this thread. uncanny.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 02:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Grant Green, people! He could swing almost any tune he tried. Also, nice to see Tiny Grimes on the list. Everyone should hear "Marchin' Along" with Coleman Hawkins from the album Blues Groove (1958). Nearly 18 minutes long, Grimes solos for 8 minutes before Hawkins comes in.

todd, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 03:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Did anyone mention Vernon Reid? I hated Living Color, but he has a couple jazz records out that are pretty good. Emusic has them if you want to check it out. Can't remember the name, but I like the one with the reddish cover. Also, stop giving Vai a hard time. And those expensive Vaibanezes would be a treat to own.

dean ge, Thursday, 28 June 2007 23:31 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, Vernon Reid used to be good! He used to play with Ronald Shannon Jackson on some good records. and was he in prime time? I am too tired to look now but I feel as though i remember that. I wouldn't think he belongs in the poll though but nice one for reminding people that he didn't always suck ass.

Wes all the way until he started to make really bad records.

Saxby D. Elder, Friday, 29 June 2007 01:12 (sixteen years ago) link

As a matter of fact, Reid's most recent records are go-for-broke weirdo fusion that works just fine for me.

I saw Jim Hall not too long ago. The show was kind of a let down, actually.

Nathan, Friday, 29 June 2007 04:46 (sixteen years ago) link

He's kind of hit or miss as a leader - sometimes I question his taste in sidemen, arrangements etc.

Hurting 2, Friday, 29 June 2007 05:01 (sixteen years ago) link

i can imagine that Jim Hall can fall pretty easily into the EZ listening category -- but his stuff with Sonny Rollins, Undercurrent w/ Bill Evans and the Alone Together record w/ Ron Carter are all pretty sweet. It probably just takes someone pushing him outside of ye olde comfort zone.

tylerw, Friday, 29 June 2007 16:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Also good w/Art Farmer.

Hurting 2, Friday, 29 June 2007 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Whoa, have you guys ever heard Herbie Mann - Memphis Underground? Sonny Sharrock comes out of nowhere on "Hold On, I'm Coming," which just played on my Pandora.

Hurting 2, Friday, 29 June 2007 17:21 (sixteen years ago) link

never heard that one. herbie mann's record covers scare me.

tylerw, Friday, 29 June 2007 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I like all the Herbie Mann albums with Sonny -- don't forget Roy Ayers and Miroslav Vitous were in the band too!! ... 'Windows Open' is a good'un .. also one of the live ones gets pretty hot. Not the live one titled 'Hold On I'm Comin' (which i think was just ok), but the other one.

The version of "Airegin" from Incredible Jazz Guitar is another one of those songs that gets stuck in my head really often. I'd say at least once a week.

Oilyrags, Saturday, 30 June 2007 13:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Grant Green didn't get desperate and making loads of unfortunate musical mis-steps until long after Wes was dead. I doubt he was the winner of this poll for his "acid jazz" material, he was just a bloody great player is all. Was he better than Wes (or Django or Charlie Christian for that matter)? Maybe not... But there is a good reason that he is the winner.

Question: did the people who voted for him do so because of his pre-1970 material (as I did) or post?

Saxby D. Elder, Saturday, 30 June 2007 15:22 (sixteen years ago) link

i actually can't remember if i voted for Grant or not, but I may have -- I like both eras of his playing, though, yeah, there is some dumb 70s stuff. Some great 70s stuff too! "The Final Comedown"! Pre-fusion era, "Idle Moments" is a stone cold classic.

tylerw, Saturday, 30 June 2007 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link

re Wes "mis-steps"? What, the A&M stuff? Because if you're talking about the Verve albums, you're mistaken. Those smoke just as much as the earlier records. They just have different arrangements--the playing is the same, if not better. This "early Wes" vs "late Wes" trope that has been around for years, and it's totally stale. The verve records are *great*, and how many A&M albums are there, two tops?

I love Grant, but he'll always be second banana to Wes. Wes is just twice as exciting. I've never heard Green do a chord-melody, or an octave solo. He's very one-dimensional compared to Wes.

Johnny Hotcox, Saturday, 30 June 2007 16:23 (sixteen years ago) link

OTM. Incredible Jazz Guitar alone trumps Grant Green's entire oeuvre, and who cares if he made "musical missteps" (i.e. paid the bills) later.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 1 July 2007 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

These Wes Montgomery live records are really hot. It is why I voted for Wes.

Smokin' at the Half Note
Full House
Complete Live in Paris 1965

earlnash, Sunday, 1 July 2007 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

no doubt, wes was amazing!

Saxby D. Elder, Sunday, 1 July 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah the live Europe stuff is just insane. Wes is one of the very few guys who consistently pins the "WTF did you just hear that?" meter

Johnny Hotcox, Sunday, 1 July 2007 21:34 (sixteen years ago) link

if Wes has any drawbacks, it's that he's almost too good, and too fluid. it could get boring, I suppose. he never makes a mistake. he's like Bird.

Green is a much more hesitant player, which brings another aspect to it. You can hear more of the ANGUISH of life through Grant's playing. I think that's why people are attracted to him. Wes is more like an alien from another planet.

Johnny Hotcox, Sunday, 1 July 2007 21:38 (sixteen years ago) link

"Blue n' Boogie" on Full House is so killer. The section at the end where Wes and Johnny Griffin play back and forth off of each other is really exciting.

It is a shame that some of the SF dates that Wes did with Coltrane never got recorded. I bet those were pretty hot.

earlnash, Monday, 2 July 2007 03:55 (sixteen years ago) link

if Wes has any drawbacks, it's that he's almost too good, and too fluid. it could get boring, I suppose. he never makes a mistake. he's like Bird.

Why does most jazz guitar SOUND so shitty? So many guys on this list either have unsatisfying and weak "clean" sounds or use obnoxious effects to cover up the flaws. Only a handful make a really satisfying sound with their instrument, either clean or with effects.

It hurts me to do so but I think I really disagree with Hurting 2 about the sound of jazz guitarists. Question: Are you comparing them to rock guitarists? (You very well may not be.) I feel that many people take rock guitar sounds, which are almost always deadened by amps, as a standard for the sound of the electric guitar. The instrument has more to offer sonically!

Question: Are you comparing them to rock guitarists? (You very well may not be.)

No, I'm more comparing them to the sounds of other jazz instruments. I find guitar (in the hands of most) to be one of the least-satisfying sounds in jazz -- it's usually so dynamically flat and often fails to blend properly with the band. It too often sound more like a note machine than a real instrument.

I used to dislike most jazz guitar as well, and I still don't always like to listen to recordings of it that much, but I figured that I live in a big city where there are lots of good players playing gigs in bars and restaurants with no cover, sometimes with bass and drums or singers and often even conveniently located in Manhattan so I figured I'd go out and check some of it out. If you can see Bucky Pizzarelli for the price of a beer, why not? Especially since he might bring his son John along or some other guitar player like Howard Alden is at the bar waiting to sit in. How do you know what the guitar tone of one of these guys is really like or how it fits in with a band until you have seen them live?

Everything You POLL Is RONG (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 03:05 (twelve years ago) link

I actually never quite understood his recommended practice routines. I mean "practicing" all of those tunes every day alone would take a few hours if you really did it. Then he'd have like three other books for you to practice out of, and you were supposed to do each thing in every key in every position on the fretboard, and it seemed like it would take 8 hours of FOCUSED practice to get through all that plus whatever was assigned for combos and improv classes and such. And I just did not have that kind of focus.

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 03:06 (twelve years ago) link

I know what you mean. Obviously you've gotta practice a lot and practice stuff on a regular basis, but to give people a giant list of stuff and say you've gotta practice this giant list every single day seems like it would be demoralizing to everybody but the most fanatical student. Which some might say is the point but still. Actually I saw the other guy for a few seconds this evening but didn't really talk to him. Singularities Going Steady (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 22:37 (twelve years ago) link

If you hang around with some Jazz guitarists you might find that a reasonable number of them actively dislike rock guitar, both the notes that are played and the effects they are played through. You might even here somebody say "These kids ruined music!" Which is fine if the disliker is over 60 but is really kind of weird when they are under 50. (Which ultimately might cause somebody else who does listen to rock to say that they hate Jazz guitar in return.) Some might actually cover it up by picking a few players to appreciate-"Oh yeah, I like Jimi Hendrix!" - but that's about as far as it goes. I'm sure somebody will say I made this up, but I assure you this strawman exists.

This is absolutely 100% true. I've been in on many of these conversations, and this attitude spans generations (though isn't as prevalent with younger players).

Charles Shaar Murray, in his brilliant Hendrix book Crosstown Traffic, had a great line about how if some homicidal time-traveler were to strangle at birth every jazz guitarist between Charlie Christian and Jimi Hendrix, the overall arc and development of the music as a whole wouldn't be any different.

In other news, apparently when Congress reauthorized the FAA a month ago, they made it clear that musical instruments were permitted as carry-on baggage so long as they fit in the compartment- you can see this on the TSA website, guitars and violins specifically mentioned- but I don't think the airline personnel have been informed, you still have to argue with them about this

Did you guys know that Lenny Breau's first jazz session (1961) was with Levon Helm and Rick Danko as rhythm section? Also, it fucking smokes. They're not an amazing jazz rhythm section but they get out of the way, which is the best thing they could do for his liszt-esque runs.

Albee Thousand (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 4 January 2013 12:42 (eleven years ago) link

The whole story unfolds like some kind of Michael Chabon/Cameron Crowe confection about The World's Greatest Guitarist, piling incident upon incident of, just when you thought there were no more left, another Guitar Player's Guitar Player or Guitar Player's Guitar Teacher stepping forward to say "I thought I knew something about the instrument but then Lenny came to town and stayed over to my house where we jammed all night and he showed me had mastered my style and in fact greatly improved upon it. Whenever he came through again he would stop over and show me some new stuff he was working on while I kept the tape rolling but I in the end couldn't really play it because my technique wasn't good enough." All this leading up to the dark Sunset Boulevard/Jim Thompson denouement. I exaggerate but not much.

Today would have been the 92 birthday of Jimmy Wyble, who I believed I've mentioned here before, who passed away four years ago shortly before his eighty-eighth birthday. He started out in Western Swing, playing with both Bob Wills and Spade Cooley, among others- listen to his solo on the original version of "Roly Poly"- and later played jazz with the likes of Red Norvo, Benny Goodman and Frank Sinatra- look for him in Ocean's Eleven and The Screaming Mimi. Later on he did tons of film and TV work, playing on the soundtrack of The Wild Bunch and The Flip Wilson Show among many others. Later still he was known as a teacher to many, many guitarists and for developing a contrapuntal approach for playing guitar. I was lucky enough to meet him once the before he died. The kind, gentle demeanor and devotion to maximizing musical matters and minimizing the attendant trappings that inspired so many were completely in evidence, you could feel it, even when he was just sitting at a table. You can read about him here http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/Forgotten_Heroes_Jimmy_Wyble although there is something strange with that link, some pages seem to repeat.

Now based in New York, Harrison has a career that includes playing with a big band, writing chamber jazz, wildly reimagining old country songs and composing for string quartets.

...Harrison — who earned a 2010 Guggenheim fellowship for his work — says his longtime friend Nels Cline explores similarly vast territory on the guitar. The two met in the 1970s, made a record together in the ’90s, and last year Cline performed at Harrison’s annual Alternative Guitar Summit

1978 Joe Pass and Paulinho da Costa album "Tudo Bem"

After countless solo guitar albums for Pablo, Joe Pass performed this welcome change of pace, a set of Brazilian tunes. Joined by fellow guitarist Oscar Castro Neves, bassist Octavio Bailly, drummer Claudio Slon, percussionist Paulinho da Costa and keyboardist Don Grusin, Pass plays warm solos on a variety of Brazilian tunes. Highlights include three songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim (including "Corcovado"

Sad to hear this. A great player who chose to play less instead of more. I´m still getting to know his immense body of work, but my introduction to his music was "Class Trip" with Mark Feldman on violin - and it´s great. I was lucky to see him in Rotterdam, The Netherlands with this particular band around the time they released "Wait Till You See Her". I hope ECM will continue their rerelease schedule of his records (many records for other small labels are out of print) and that they will release a live DVD at one point.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 11:23 (six years ago) link

I remember seeing him during a slew of the "electric jazz fusion" band days...RTF, Abercrombie, Ralph Towner. Abercrombie's ECM dates are still favorites. RIP

The book with sheet music "Timeless: The Music of John Abercrombie" mentions that he played on more than 240 albums. It´s a great resource for guitar players as he explains how he approaches composition and soloing. He was indeed a member of Stark Reality.

EvR, Thursday, 24 August 2017 07:27 (six years ago) link

I´m also very fond of this album, where he sounds great. A nice combination of early Miles Davis lyricism and post-Bitches Brew grooves.

Abercrombie tears shit up on Enrico Rava's Katcharpari from 1973, which was just remastered by the MPS label. It's a very Jack Johnson/On the Corner-ish album, and Abercrombie's guitar playing is ferocious.

Ooh need to check this out. I always thought he was kind of a slept on guitarist in hipper jazz circles although he has had some commercial success.

I reviewed the new Malone album in my Stereogum column. You can stream one track there.

I just remembered I have 3 Billy Cobham albums from the '70s with John Abercrombie on 'em. Gonna dig those out.

That´s correct. There are 32 tunes from his entire career, from "Timeless" to "Within A Song" + a discography. It also features some alternative chord voicings heard on record but not listed in the lead sheets. You´ll learn about his obsession with minor flat six chords that imply the aeolian mode.

I may have mentioned that he took over for Ted after Ted died and I had a semester of lessons with him. He was a very nice guy and a good teacher but I was in a really bad emotional place at the time and couldn't absorb much. I did gain one very useful lesson from him, which was to think about setting up your next improvisational moves on the neck of the guitar the way a pool player sets up for his next shot.

Surprised by the zero votes for Metheny, only because the biggest jazz fanatic I knew in school (which is saying a lot because I knew quite a few who were dedicated fans, playing in bands, hosting a jazz radio show on the school's radio station, etc.) was also a guitarist who worshipped Metheny, and now that he's teaching somewhere I'm sure he's pushing him on to his students. I would never vote for him but despite my reservations I have grown to like him, he's a good sideman on a good number of albums I really like and I love the one he did with Ornette Coleman.

Having his name misspelled might not have helped his vote count.
I'm enthralled by about half the tracks on his debut, respect his outing with Ornette, and everything else I've heard completely escapes me. Especially when he plays that guitar synth sound that sound like my cat talking to the birds: "mew mew mew mew mew mew...mew mew mew mew mew".

More to the point, where's Terje Rypdal?!?
