Because I do.

I liked that one I kept seeing on 120 Minutes, with the woman in the playground. Then I heard another one and I thought 'meh'. Oh well.

This song still rocks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBb0zSmNevY

They're pretty sweet live.
― William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 2 September 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)
cover art for new album : shit. really really shit. the singles have looked pretty great making the choice of artwork all the more unexopected. did they run out of money ? [still figuring out if i actually like the band]

'heart breaker' is a top tune
― Michael B, Friday, 9 January 2009 20:02 (seventeen years ago)
Album is so-so, with a few standout tracks.
― zeus, Friday, 9 January 2009 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

I do...

I'm surprised at how little coverage it has got here - to my ears, it's a classic!
― yugi ex, Friday, 23 November 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)
so good
― everythingsgross, Monday, 26 November 2012 19:18 (thirteen years ago)
Listening again tonight, it's still a brilliant album. Looking forwards to the new one in the New Year.
― yugi ex, Friday, 29 November 2013 21:24 (twelve years ago)
New album is a bit more sparse and pared-back. A bit early to make my mind up about it yet but its certainly good. Kind of disappointed that ILM completely these guys.
― everyday sheeple (Michael B), Sunday, 9 March 2014 18:33 (twelve years ago)
I like them. Just started listening to the new album so I can't really say much about it yet.
― LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 10 March 2014 06:22 (twelve years ago)
I liked them in the beginning, but the first lp didn't do a lot for me and nothing I've heard from this one does either. Wasn't there a line-up shake up sometime before the first lp? Whoever left probably had some influence that's missing now.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 10 March 2014 06:25 (twelve years ago)
The new one is actually their fourth album. I never heard the first one but I liked Nights Out and The English Riviera. They used to be a trio and then added a drummer before the 3rd one.
― LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 10 March 2014 06:40 (twelve years ago)
Oh right, I'd forgotten a bunch of the songs I liked were collected on Nights Out. Don't think of it as an album, so I blanked on it.
Wiki tells me it was the bassist who left (to pursue his side project Your Twenties, which iirc never lasted beyond two singles). Losing one member and adding two between Nights Out and English Riviera did something to the chemistry and approach, though, and nu-Metronomy isn't for me.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 10 March 2014 06:50 (twelve years ago)
i meant to say that ILM completely IGNORES these guys
― everyday sheeple (Michael B), Monday, 10 March 2014 10:04 (twelve years ago)
I'm hearing a lot of Squeeze/XTC on this one.
― What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Monday, 10 March 2014 11:48 (twelve years ago)
"Love Letters" is one of the singles of the year for me, an earworm for sure. And I like the sparseness, too.
― agincourtgirl, Sunday, 16 March 2014 22:39 (twelve years ago)
Casual fan of the last album, particularly its singles. Gave the new one a go over the weekend and it seemed dull.
― all is fair in love and womp (monotony), Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:19 (twelve years ago)
I tried so hard to like The English Riviera, but I couldn't get into it. There are a few tunes on there that are nice.
However, I quite like the new album.

New single is not bad.

i really like what ive heard of the new stuff.
theres just a slightly whiny quality about his voice, but i really like the songs.
― StillAdvance, Monday, 23 May 2016 20:51 (ten years ago)
There's a strong Scary Monsters vibe to the new record, and it comes in at a tight 40 minutes or so.
― dinnerboat, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 20:02 (nine years ago)
Like it but slightly prefer the Fatima Yamaha remix of 'Old Skool' to the original, likewise the Cassius remix of '16 Beat'.
― nashwan, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 20:12 (nine years ago)
i've been playing the crap out of 'the english riviera' all week and i absolutely love it
― Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 15 March 2017 13:13 (nine years ago)
for years i tried on and off to penetrate this album but it's only last year that it took hold, and christ did it take hold. 'corinne' has been on repeat for the past hour.
― Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 15 March 2017 13:17 (nine years ago)
I dismissed this band completely when they appeared on the scene but having just discovered English Riviera, I gotta say its really a timeless classic. So different from everything that's out there
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 20 April 2017 15:45 (nine years ago)
So ten years after starting this thread, I finally went to see them last night (in Brixton). I don't know anything off the most recent album and only downloaded two tracks off the one before (The Most Immaculate Haircut and Never In A Month Of Sundays) (those might not be the names, but something like that) and they played very little of the earlier stuff so I had no idea what I was listening to most of the time.
― Warren's Treat (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 20 May 2017 08:41 (nine years ago)
Still don’t get why ILM doesn’t care about these guys. They’re pretty big in France
