six years pass...

i heard Dan Baird's solo song "Younger Face" over the weekend after about 15 years. It's like a good late-era Replacements track. How does the Georgia Satellites stuff hold up?

Funny you should mention them. I was listening to Rubiyat for the first time in years last week, and had almost forgotten their Fogarty cover:

I've never listened to them much more than that, but it'd be a pleasant surprise if "Keep Your Hands" was more like the "My Ding-a-ling" of their catalogue and hid a bunch of actual cool stuff. Never thought to investigate.

Now, I hate that "I Love You Period" song Baird did with Rick Rubin. That doesn't bode well for me.

i'm pretty sure "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" was an outlier. I actually haven't heard anything by them since 1986, so I have little memory of it, but but I imagine them being a mishmash of Stones, Faces, George Thorogood, and a bunch of other dudes who the Black Crowes stole all their licks from and eventually rode to success with.

Keep Your Hands to Yourself is one of the coolest songs ever. not sure how much traction the song got outside of the southeast but that first verse will be live my head for life

Dan Baird's solo stuff sounds pretty good

"Keep Your Hands" is one of those songs like "La Grange" that I will always turn up max if it comes on the car radio. I don't think I have ever heard another Georgia Satellites song, maybe I should.

I loved them in high school and still listen to them today. Their whole Elektra catalog got reissued as a 3CD set a few years ago with a bunch of bonus live tracks and whatnot.

Baird is married and does not drink alcohol. During tours, Baird can often be found exercising in hotel gyms. According to Baird's blog on MySpace, he met Neil Young in a hotel gym locker room late one night. This provided Baird with an opportunity to make amends for his ineptness during a noisy backstage meeting the night before. The two discussed guitars and amplifiers, and Young complimented Baird on his music.

I saw the post-Baird lineup play a concert immediately after an Arena Football game in early '99.

If that box set seems like possible overkill, the old single disc Let It Rock is dirt cheap & killer.

In 1988, the band recorded a cover of The Swinging Blue Jeans' 1964 hit "Hippy Hippy Shake" for the movie Cocktail.[1]

Oh yeah, I had forgotten all about this. So there's a second song I know.

Otis Gibbs has a couple of good interviews with Dan Baird up on the Youtube. Dan Baird's Telecaster that he played in the Georgia Satellites when they got big he actually got off of Steve Marriott when he lived in Atlanta. Otis has a bunch of good interviews up, but these are recommended if curious.

I listened to the whole Let It Rock best-of yesterday, and yeah if I see this in a cheap CD bin will definitely pick it up.
