An italo-disco Annie is so obviously what the world has always needed that it amazes me no one has thought of it before. The single, I'll Be By Your Side is on Bigstereo right now, and it's been a long time since I've loved a song this much on first listening.

If it does sound like Annie (yeah, it's a lazy comparison), it's the wistful Annie of Heartbeat or My Best Friend. But the backing is proper italo, straight out of 1983, no question.

The other clips on her website sound great as well. I am anticipating the album hugely now.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 30 July 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

Ohhhhhhh.... even over tinny-ass work computer speakers this sounds delightful. Vocally very different from Annie. Nice.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Sunday, 30 July 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

was that track, maybe called "crash and burn," on the robyn album italo?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 30 July 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

(damn that album is good)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 30 July 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

yeah --- when the fuck does that come out US?

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Sunday, 30 July 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

i really enjoy this single a lot, it's very pretty and winsome in that valerie dore style (who's a much more accurate touchstone here than either robyn or annie).

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 30 July 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

I like this stuff.

31g (31g), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

The full length album is very good. I hear the Rude 66 "909 mix" is even better than the 808 one.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 8 January 2007 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

That 808 Remix is completely at odds with the rest of the record, ugh.

I loved Disco Romance upon first listen, although, now that it's been a while, I guess I mainly listen to "I'll be by your side", I Know", "Anorak Christmas", and "Hold me so Tight" off of it. Not a bad ratio, though.

Z S, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

"HE KEEPS ME ALIVE"! The most beautiful song of the year!

daavid, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

Correct. Shame it wasn't on the European release of the album.

caek, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

I hold Sally Shapiro almost entirely responsible for my inability to properly appreciate the Chromatics album. 'He Keeps Me Alive' is amazing!

Matt DC, Friday, 12 October 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

gareth told me you wouldn't shut up about the chromatics album

jaxon, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

Buggered if I know, but yeah, probably.

Matt DC, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, "He Keeps Me Alive" is super! The other newie, "Jackie Jackie," is also great; nice vintage PSB style production with ABBA-esque chorus. Again: super. Both written by this guy btw:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=66025460

(He wrote "Anorak Christmas" as well.)

David Bachyrycz, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

The record's being released in the US on October 30th.

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/44466-sally-shapiros-iromancei-comes-to-north-america

three handclaps, Saturday, 20 October 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

Nixon? I really like this version of Anorak Christmas, not as good as Shapiro, needs her voice imho, but who is it? Although actually when he does the don't go bit at the end, that is very good and nice I think.

I know, right?, Saturday, 20 October 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh that Nixon dude's voice is terrible, thank god he has Sally to write songs for though.

That North American tracklisting looks good, more like a proper album than a lengthy EP.

Matt DC, Saturday, 20 October 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

This is now out in the US! Thinking of going to get my copy tonight.

deej, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:12 (eighteen years ago)

deej, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

In your defense, Annie is hot.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 10 March 2008 03:18 (eighteen years ago)

this chicks voice really bothers me

deej, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

It's a little chirp-y, but I like it. She's better in small doses, I'll give you that. The single is v. good.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 10 March 2008 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

will there be hot chicks at her show? a friend invited and im deciding whether to go and thats really my only motivating factor atm

deej, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:31 (eighteen years ago)

maybe youre unimpressed by this bcuz it's really boring

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 March 2008 03:32 (eighteen years ago)

I clicked on this hoping there was a new single or something. thanks, haters.

31g, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

winston, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

tremendoid, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

she's the farthest thing from boring, i know that.

tremendoid, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:50 (eighteen years ago)

did you try "He Keeps Me Alive"?

tremendoid, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:50 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, this stuff sounds kinda pretty but i think i just find her voice to dull/irritating

deej, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:55 (eighteen years ago)

man the line between "pretty" and "putting me to sleep" is pretty thin for me

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 March 2008 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

i agree

deej, Monday, 10 March 2008 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

she wasn't really front and center on her first big single, in a weird way, and it was great so I don't think of it that way I guess. Her limitations are pretty obvious as a singer but the nu-talo is exquisite imo.

tremendoid, Monday, 10 March 2008 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

"nu-talo"!!! hahaha

i heard she doesn't perform live OR dj during her "live sets"

jaime, Monday, 10 March 2008 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

here we go

tremendoid, Monday, 10 March 2008 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

ok that's actually good to know thx.

tremendoid, Monday, 10 March 2008 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

I still play the US version of Disco Romance a lot, and I think I'd likely count it as one of my favorite lps of the past few years. I feel pretty biased though, as my love for the sugary synth-pop end of italo is pretty much off the chart.

SS does have a new 12" out now on Permanent Vacation, containing 2 of the new tracks from Disco Romance, and a couple of remixes (including one by the Junior Boys).

Michael F Gill, Monday, 10 March 2008 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

just downloaded the Sally Shapiro Remix Romance V.1 album and it's quite good, most remix albums blow but this is really good.

remixers are holy fuck, lindstrom, junior boys, tensnake, juan maclean and woodhands [who are from Canada and you should also check out their album]

theres my two cents.

zappa, Friday, 11 April 2008 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, shockingly good for a remix album.

Gukbe, Saturday, 12 April 2008 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

i really really want that..

winston, Saturday, 12 April 2008 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone downloaded vol. 2 yet? Not as many familiar names on that one.

(also, does anyone know if it's getting a physical release at all or if it's just through Paper Bag's mp3 shop?)

Telephone thing, Saturday, 12 April 2008 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

havent been able to get all of vol.2 yet, but i've heard the russian futurists and cfcf mixes because they're on a website already, can't remember the one. they're good mixes thou, the futurists mix is more like a cover version and the cfcf mix sounds like an old madonna tune, good stuff.

not sure about a physical release but on the paper bag site is says digital only so it might be just that

zappa, Saturday, 12 April 2008 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

just heard "i'll be by your side today" and i guess i don't get it :/ sounds like by-the-numbers 80s electro dance with very thin, 60s french-style singing

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 12 April 2008 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

it grew on me. there's a few better on the album than that tho - i like that remix of 'find my soul'.

blueski, Saturday, 12 April 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

blueski - the remix album grew on you or the disco romance album?

tracer hand - i have the north american version of the DR album with He Keeps Me Alive on it which is a highlight, you should check out that tune, it's a good one.

zappa, Sunday, 13 April 2008 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

sounds like by-the-numbers 80s electro dance with very thin, 60s french-style singing

are people reading reviews leading them to believe that it is anything other than this? i mean, i personally really enjoy this album (it's one of the best indie-pop albums in a long long while) but people seem to be expecting it to be some big innovative blockbuster or something

winston, Sunday, 13 April 2008 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

^^^^

exactly what i was thinkin.

zappa, Monday, 14 April 2008 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

The Canseco's remix of "Hold Me So Tight" borrows heavily from the extended version of Electronic - "Getting Away With It".

She's worked with Tensnake on at least some of the tracks which makes me think it could be amazing. I'm hoping she ditches the italo and goes for the full-on widescreen, brightly-coloured Permanent Vacation sound. Although I haven't actually heard the single yet.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 July 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

The thunderbolts-as-orchestra-hits in "Miracle" are so awesome. I don't expect the new album to be that much different from "Disco Romance", although from the tracks I've heard, the production job seem to be a bit more rich & detailed.

It has leaked. And unfortunately, nothing except for "Let it Show" is grabbing me at all. Granted, I only really liked a few songs off of the first one, but at least on that one the other songs were not bad, definitely bearable. This one is for the most part skippable, at least for me.

I must push back and say the second album is awesome. I find all three albums very consistent in songwriting, with a bump in production values as time goes on.

Looking forward to hearing this new one more. Glad "Don't be Afraid" made it out of semi-obscurity and onto the tracklisting. Also the saxophone solo in the middle of the album: sublime.

I wasn't a fan of "My Guilty Pleasure" either. This one's much better. Still nothing as strong, melodically, as some of the songs on the first album. The sound is reminiscent of some 80's stuff I can't quite put my finger on, but it's no longer Italo. Maybe Pet Shop Boys?

SS albums have been some of my favorite things in the past 8 years. Only just realized there's a free album on their website collecting almost all of the remixes Johan has done. The unreleased Jam & Spoon mix is great! Surprised the Friday Bridge remix is NOT on it, though.

oh jesus, i thought you meant the lead singer had died. don't do that!

wizzz! (amateurist), Wednesday, 11 May 2016 00:28 (ten years ago)

Sorry! I meant that they had broke up.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 11 May 2016 00:32 (ten years ago)

I still really love all three albums + the album of remixes Johan did under the SS name. They captured the sincere sentimentality of italodisco without being overly cheesy/kitsch or strictly track-based, and they weren't a one-off.

I was just today listening to "sleep in my arms" on repeat

Just released a second low-key-but-great track with Ryan Paris today, looks like they will both be released in a week. Miss Sally's voice a lot these days.

single on Friday! and there's a new one from Annie due this week too. All we need is Cloetta Paris to return.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 19:25 (four years ago)

Cloetta Paris is a very good SS clone, although the production / vocals are a little more generic IMO.

I am naturally super excited about any new Sally Shapiro material.

Gorgeous, if a bit darker than usual but hey it's on IDIB. Full "collection of new material" in the fall!

this is excellent, reminds me of the Junior Boys remix a lot.

So glad to have them back. Perfect timing with a new Annie single out today as well.

yeah, this really sounds like Pleasure Masters-era Annie!

A little disappointed that the new single is just last year’s single with Ryan Paris.....although with Sally singing Ryan’s part now. Song now sounds flatter and less dynamic (original is amazing). At least the full album is only a few months away.

Love this album, feels like they never left. Maybe a few more slower/darker songs this time, but really satisfying throughout.

Still irked by the new version of Forget About Me, although the song itself is fantastic. Love on Ice is also essential even though it’s missing from the album.

new album out end of may, new single out today. Also included their good cover of PSB’s Rent. Good stuff for the faithful.
