Surprised there isn't already a teeming thread on this masterpiece.

It is stunning and is going to get the full CoM treatment.

It's what I always imagined grime/dubstep should sound like - empty, vast and deeply emotional.

I doubt any record will sum up the grey steel of 2006 London more fully than this one. It seems to be a compilation of tracks recorded between 2001 and now. But on early listening this is astonishing; the blackened mirror image of SAW II, Horsepower Productions in negative, Post-Millennium Tension.

Any thoughts?

theres some talk in the grime/dubstep thread i think

pretty good album, sounds like it should soundtrack Blade Runner or something

it has a similar vibe to classic Tricky albums too

I looked at that thread but decided against posting there because of the same troll who ruined the Scott Walker/Drift thread.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 08:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I've said most of my thoughts already - I listened to tracks of it 45 times in the week it came out according to my last.fm page. The thing that gets me is that the guy doesn't use a sequencer. It's all made using Soundforge which is v. impressive and also maybe explains the really organic sound to it.

As I said before the only thing I don't like is the track with the rap on - the only thing I've really liked that Spaceape has done was the cover (of sorts) of Sign 'O' The Times he did on an earlier Hyperdub EP.

If I was running any kind of electronic label right now I would be commissioning remixes from this guy. In fact... why not Relevee (Burial Mix)? :)

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 09:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Agree that the voice on Spaceape deflates the overall tension somewhat. The strength of the album is its dark corners, its underheard or misheard whispers in the shadows of knives and prayer.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 09:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I've only listened to it twice in full, but I think the album as a whole doesn't quite live up to its best tracks - i wish the whole thing had abandoned virtual-reality-divas moaning in anguish all over it, but it's only a couple of times and very fleeting! I still like some of the instrumental tracks though, the overwraught atmospherics remind me heavily of the best, most gothic bits of DJ Shadow's The Private Press (regardless of how verboten such a comparison might be for 'ardkore continuists).

The production is awesome yeah. Although again there's a distinction b/w the tracks with great, fluid rhythms and those with more run-o'-the-millish dubstep and halfstep beats. And the Spaceape track is definitely the weakest.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 10:01 (seventeen years ago) link

The best time I find to listen to it is late at night, not entirely awake (Chris Morris' Blue Jam worked on the same principle), so the sounds drift into and disturb one's head.

Tried this Sunday night, awoke deeply disturbed, switched to the radio and it was "Gotta See Jane" by R Dean Taylor. "Windscreen wipers splishing, splashing..." It seemed strangely apt.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 10:28 (seventeen years ago) link

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 10:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Marcello- total agreement on this one./ However I got a beating for this by Boy Child on the dubstep thread (that's floating about here) cos apparently it represents the worst aspects of hermeticism amongst a certain strain of dance music fan. Hmm.

ANYWAY: Have you heard the "Original Garage" mix of "U Hurt Me"? Its only on one mix (available here...http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_blackdownsoundboy_archive.html#114529091176863831) dunno if it'll be released later, but its basically a Balearic-pop version...

IMHO: Spaceape track works well (it IS distinct to the rest as it has a live vocalist rather than distressed samples)but it has a tightly wound minimalist funk in its slightly out-of-time beats (especially when the hi hats come in) which is really compelling...

It's the whole "elegy for Omni Trio" bizniz that I don't get - if anything this is (at its best) a cross b/w early dubstep and the more musical/emotional techstep a la the first Dom & Roland album.

The Boxcutter album was streaming online for a while, it was more like technically well-done & clean, slightly orientalist (by way of Photek maybe) bassy IDM in the autechre-electro style.

It was ok, but not much melody or anything else gripping for me, I couldn't make it through the whole thing.

a review from http://www.failme.net/

First thing that has to be stated is that this isn't a straight up dubstep album. It can't be, there's far too many clever rhythmic and

melodic twists and turns to keep it held down by something as trivial as genre or style. He takes dubstep's distinctive motif's (warping b-lines, downward drums, silent gaps) and furnishes incredibly layered pieces of futurist funk.

The eastern sunrise opener of 'Tauhid' might be weighted down with swathes of sub. But, like the rest of the album, there's a light footprint to it all. Even the murky, out-of-focus echo of 'Skuff'd' seems to have a spring in its step. Whilst bass-heads will find solace in darker moments like the magnificent 'Brood'. The rest of us will find this a seasonally apt piece of accomplished electronic music.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 03:04 (seventeen years ago) link

"First thing that has to be stated is that this isn't a straight up dubstep album. It can't be, there's far too many clever rhythmic and melodic twists and turns to keep it held down by something as trivial as genre or style."

I agree that the album ain't straight-up dubstep (although it basically is in parts - the weakest parts ha) but the second half of this statement is ridiculoid.

The beats at their best are better than most current dubstep but not all (and generally not as good as first-wave Horspower/El-B etc. for the sake of an easy comparison) - the focus here is really the texturological side of tings, the heaviness of the synths and samples which gives the music a physicality not in the sense of groove, but in the sense of it feeling physically tangible, like you're gonna get damp if you listen to the tracks with rain sounds.

Still think it's an amazing EP masquerading as a decent album.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 05:03 (seventeen years ago) link

At it's best it very handily inspires a lot of purple prose (see immediately above) which i think is reason alone to at least like it, and will probably propel it to quite a bit of crossover critical (if not commercial) success.

speaking of hyperbolic, this is from the latest bleep newsletter: "Its everything that Goldie´s Timeless ought to have been." (quoting k-punk)

that comment pretty much makes me want to avoid this album even though i am intrigued. i am very resistant to this premature canonization stuff. was "timeless" critically reviled on it's release? i recall reading a few recent posts here that tear it apart pretty well, but "ought to have been"?

I thought that a record as cinematic as The Drift demanded a cinemascopic treatment...also that particular passage had to stand as it was because it was perhaps the most painful thing I've ever written in CoM, or the thing which has caused me the most pain to write because it involved confronting personal demons which I had long strived to avoid, but which listening to the record had provoked.

In any event I have divided the passage up into digestible lines, and the Burial piece is now up for lovers of "nonsensical flowery prose."

marcello, nothing personal, but your blog piece sums up why brit music writing disgusts me.

three paragraphs of deeply gross classist handwringing about the "working class" - do you really only see "wretchedness" every time you see someone in the lowest tax bracket? and i like this one: "they are given the illusion of education and enlightenment" - aren't you also culpable? why are you so willing to see the education of "people who work in call-centre servitude" as illusion?

followed by five paragraphs of blogging about blogging.

followed by several paragraphs of vaguely musicological nonsense:

"record looks and feels like something unofficial, unauthorised; an urgent samizdat, a desperate plea from an ending world, an artefact whose emotions are so necessary to communicate that packaging would constitute both delay and distraction."

dude, it looks like any techstep album from the early 2000s!!

breakfast pants (disco stu), Thursday, 1 June 2006 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I think what annoys me about these "cinematic" dubstep beats is that they often sound so stiltedly unphysical. One of the points about having beats hovering at circa 135 bpm is that you can get a really great hip-focused groove going, but dubpstep extracts the hips and frequently what is left is this stilted anti-flow, this stiffness that sounds like the music has been broken or winded or crushed by a corsette, a machine that's had some vital part removed and can't work properly.

Techstep did this too (this is part of the similarity) but the speed and the shameless use of breakdowns and climaxes gave it a sense of a broken machine spiralling out of control. With dubstep - slower and seemingly suspicious of the notion of song dynamic - that never happens.

The Dom & Roland Industry comparison makes a lot of sense for me, above and beyond the fact that Industry is definitely my favourite techstep album. I think Burial beats out Dom & Roland on the texture front, the warp and weave of the samples etc. But D&R beats out Burial on the beats/grooves front because, even when it's basically a straightforward 2-step groove (maybe 4 tracks or so), there's a real energy and intensity to the groove, a friction between the physicality of the beats and the lush mournfulness of the textures and melodies - when this is combined with an excitingly syncopated rhythm (on tracks like "Thunder", "Chained On Both Sides" and especially the peerless "Elektra") it's unstoppable.

It's clear that Burial can construct excitingly syncopated rhythms and on the best tracks that's what he does, but frequently he still sounds caught within dubstep's horizon of wounded undynamic grooves, like a post-Timbaland version of the leaden, lumpen boom-bap which drags down so much comparable downtempo.

???? Marcello help me unpack that analogy, I'm feeling tipsy and dense and can't even work out what the relationship b/w Saint Etienne and Menswear is right now, let alone how my comments relate to it.

NB 1. I don't have an issue with rhythms sounding like broken machines. It's just that ideally a broken machine should sound, well, dangerous, rather than merely, well mildly impaired.

NB 2. I'm not saying that the entire album suffers from this, only about half.

Might you not consider it a simulacrum of "dangerous"? The punctum here lies in how it suggests, and perhaps even seeps "dangerous" without snarling it out in capital letters (which is another reason why "Spaceape" doesn't really work)?

"Might you not consider it a simulacrum of "dangerous"? The punctum here lies in how it suggests, and perhaps even seeps "dangerous" without snarling it out in capital letters (which is another reason why "Spaceape" doesn't really work)?"

I suspect I am not being particularly clear here:

I think (and it appears that I agree with you on this perhaps) the beats on Burial's album are best when they're not trying to be obviously dangerous, when they're at their loosest and prettiest, e.g. the first proper track and the track with the sampled reggae vocals towards the end (sorry I'm not totally on top of tracknames much yet). These tracks are still pretty dark sounding, but part of that is due to the thickness of the arrangements and the slightly foreboding use of spatialisation - the way the sounds emerge and recede so boldly. It's also partly due to what Simon R called the "murderous panache" (or something to that effect) of proper 2-step a la Artful Dodger - beats don't have to be obviously doom and gloom to feel threatening.

The weakest beats are the ones which cleave closest to the current dubstep norm of a sort of self-contained hard-brokenness. These ones seem to fall between two stools: they have that wounded, muscly quality of techstep, but none of the sense of release you get with the best techstep. It's most obvious on the Spaceape track but even with some of the better tracks like "Southern Comfort" I'm left thinking "the beat is the weakest part of this track."

Actually the Dom & Roland album shares this affliction to the extent that all techstep did - there's a track on it co-produced with Optical which is very hard and very carefully arranged, but so constipated in feel that it never generates any interesting tension. I guess if there's one word I'd use to describe bad dubstep beats it'd be constipated.

Totally. Late last year I spent an enjoyable Plaid (yeah, they were playing dubstep) gig leaning on the subs. Felt like the bass was going to choke me.

its all about the bass pressure, best experienced in a club- its a physical thing-- much more physical than any beat--- the tracks are specifically engineered to be as massive bass wise as possible on finely tuned club systems

not surprised about plaid playing dubstep - i think one of my first thoughts when i heard "request line" was how much it sounded like plaid or two lone swordsmen.

I wouldn't mind hearing a whole track from this, 'cause I was not feeling the snippets linked on the other thread. There might have been some okay beats happening in there, but they're drenched in enough reverb as to be unintelligible and attack-free. Maybe I don't "get it".

Midnight Request Line sounds like Plaid? Do you mean harmonically or in terms of sound design? Surely not the latter. Skream's sounds on MRL strike me as far too fluttery, slightly-cheapo preset-like to merit much of a Plaid comparison. (This is not a value judgment btw).

Tim, you said that you found the beat in "Southern Comfort" to be the weakest part of the track. Do you also consider it "constipated," i.e., do you include it among the dubstep tunes that don't "generate any tension"?

"Tim, you said that you found the beat in "Southern Comfort" to be the weakest part of the track. Do you also consider it "constipated," i.e., do you include it among the dubstep tunes that don't "generate any tension"? "

I guess I wouldn't go quite so far w/r/t "Southern Comfort", although there's something about the way it loops into itself which bugs me - the variation on every 8th bar is better than the usual beat. "You Hurt Me" has a v. similar beat structure but I like the beat more (also it has those awesome, albeit too sparing "DROP!" samples).

I love the rhythm programming on "Gutted" though - even though it's barely there!

In retrospect it's only "Spaceape" that is actively bad in this sense. Though i could take or leave "Prayer", and while "Wounder" works it's not for the beats.

If it was an EP along the lines of:

Distant Lights
Night Bus
You Hurt Me
Gutted
Broken Home
Forgive

... It would be unimpeachable.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 4 June 2006 12:59 (seventeen years ago) link

does "spaceape" feature the vocal stylings of THE spaceape, the one from dubstep allstars vol 3?

because his presence on vol 3 IS "actively bad", in fact it's terrible, and i can't believe people aren't calling kode 9 out on it!

not only is it sort of embarassing - would any of these dudes rep for "dj kicks: rockers hi-fi"? - but in this case it's just ... yuck.

"Victims themselves of a close encounter / Desperate abductors, constructors / Become an infected vex / By an alien virus"?

dude ... shut the fuck up.

gaseous (gaseous), Sunday, 4 June 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Sunday, 4 June 2006 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I think Spaceape helps make Dubstep Allstars vol.3 much more listenable than vol.1 and 2 which were a bit boring. I completely disagree with everyone saying 'Spaceape' is the weakest track on the Burial album. I think after 'Distant Lights' its one of the strongest. Its a breath of fresh air in what is sometimes a bit claustrophic record. In fact I get the sense that his presence on the album and DA vol.3 is precisely to spoil the fun of both the instrumental (techno) purists on one hand, and urban purists on the other. Fact is, its a pretty big oversimplification to reduce Spaceape's lyrical contributions to rehashing Linton Kwesi etc.

Anyone that has heard Spaceape live recently in the UK will know that the line of argument on this thread, from carlin to finney is somewhat off the mark regarding that track. And I really wish people would stop constantly referring dubstep back to techstep. There is some substance to that contrast, but its actually such a lazy critical move to make the kind of comparisons, especially with the Burial album, which doesnt seem aimed at the dancefloor in the slightest.

Brian Best (ukb), Monday, 5 June 2006 08:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Spaceape just sounds like bad Saul Williams to me, and it completely ruins the atmosphere "Distant Lights" built up by spelling everything out. It's like having Einar out of the Sugarcubes come in halfway through SAW II. This way please, sir...

A lot of early album "techstep" wasn't either! It's not like we're talking about Bad Company!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 5 June 2006 12:20 (seventeen years ago) link

But you are talking about 'Industry' which is basically an album composed of 12s, so far from the Burial one, whereas I think, texturally at least, this album resonates more with stuff outside the hardcore continuum.

I also think it is ridiculous to suggest that its rhythmically better or worse than early dubstep. If anything it will help attract attention back to those guys, but its clearly taken that influence in another direction altogether. El-B & Horsepower's production was always clinically clean.

Brian Best (ukb), Monday, 5 June 2006 13:05 (seventeen years ago) link

The Breezeblock mix at barefiles.com is better than the album. It omits the weak tracks, has two amazing ones that aren't on the album, and great mixing. Sonewhow 'Pirates' sounds more badass on it. Maybe that's just the quality of my mp3 files though. The only great track that isn't there is 'Broken Home' which would have spoiled the dark mood anyway. Only 'Wounder' gets a bit annoying after many listens.

Thing is tho is a Skream album not going to be pretty hard-going? 45 mins of Fruity-looped arpeggios and cheeky-chappy interpolations of dub? I mean he's a fun DJ, and his best choons are excellent, (and I know he's working with vocalists- Warrior Queen I think...? on his artist album) but all the same I suspect this may grate in a way Burial's shizzle doesn't...

My friend Catherine (who sometimes posts here and sometimes on Dissensus) loves the Burial album, but said she had no way of placing this music in historical context, so i said I'd make her a compilation of different stuff that Burial vaguely reminds me of or seems connected to. This is what I came up with:

1. Nu-Birth - Anytime (Dem 2's Nice & Sleazy Mix)
2. Horsepower Productions - Fist of Fury
3. Skream - Midnite Request Line
4. Wiley - Pick Yourself Up (Target Instrumental Mix)
5. Aaliyah - We Need A Resolution
6. Tricky ft. PJ Harvey - Broken Homes
7. Donnacha Costello - Dry Retch
8. Pole - Tanzen
9. Rhythm & Sound - Truly (Vladislav Delay Remix)
10. Dillinja - The Angels Fell
11. Hidden Agenda - Dispatch #2
12. DJ Shadow - You Can't Go Home Again
13. Johnny Dark - HCD 2

Come on, don't go "I don't get it (album/hype)" after just one day. Allow it some time, it gets under your skin. Well, it worked that way for me anyway.

willem -- (willem), Thursday, 20 July 2006 10:58 (seventeen years ago) link

It's very much failing to get under my skin after repeat plays... It's alright but I'm just not finding it vital or surprising enough to draw me in more fully.

Tim F is v.much OTM calling it a padded ep because there are (frustratingly) brilliant _bits_ on it. But the whole seems to fail somehow where it shouldn't have.

And it really would have helped to have had ALL of South London Boroughs on it because the title track would have been far & away the best cut on it (then Southern Comfort, then others) on a sound design level. The less Dubstep-y this gets the weaker, less atmospheric and menacing and emotional it feels. Yet the gauzy more ambient stuff seems to be getting the unfair share of the praise.

I'd have a hard time rating it below a 7, yet vast chunks of this lag far, far behind the truly effective parts in real musical power. Whilst never ever being hard to digest or bland or anything at any time it still ends up not feeling _really great_ either.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the potential is there, but it just needs stronger hooks/melodies/tunes or something else.

Doesn't compare even remotely in imagination to darker Tricky, Massive Attack or FSOL (circa "Dead Cities") or acres of other dread Jungle... If Hyperdub didn't exist and seem fresh & untested for it I'd expect this to have been released on Lux Nigra.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I think some of the reason it doesn't feel as urban and desolate as people are claiming is it's just not fractured enough.

Fair enough to the 'burial' concept but it feels for the most part TOO hermetic and sealed around it's own foggy dreamscape to sound truly dangerous or threatening or unsettling. It needs more breaking glass and interruptions to "normality" in it I think.

Er... mind the bad grammar.

Michael Dieter (Mika), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Um I appreciate the sentiment Michael Dieter, but all the same Skream and DMZ as fractured??? Howso sir? Skream is melodic, his beats frequently pretty "flat" and non-jittery, (tho his new EP does have a jittered to shit track, ill give you that... chances are you've not heard it yet tho, so...) his music sits on conventional chord progressions and straightforward basslines -- not that fractured really... DMZ are normally pretty straightforward too how are you defining "fractured" here? I always though something like the rhythm to "boys love girls" by Kano was pretty fractured sounding, each turn of the drum track cutting at a different acute angle to the next, beset with awkward syncopation...

But yes: Burial is in no way a bass-head record, whilst the sub-bass is present it is mixed well back, as there is quite a lot else going on. Check out Pinch for some real "holy shit that's a lot of sub down there" action...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

@ Fandango's much earlier point: Yes, "Sth LDN Burroughs" the track itself is fantastic (and yes the little rushes of white noise are great sound design) and would have lifted the album up a bit. The real weakness is the torpid middle stretch when the half-step stuff kind of sits there, moping like a sad eyed teenager... not dark enough, or weepingly sad enough... however, if you've heard his remix of Blackdown's "Crackle Blues" you can see that he's definitely getting much better at the less 2-step tracks, this one sits on a half-step snare pattern but feels immense... another track which would have improved his debut album with its presence I think...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link

"(i dont like this much at all btw. tim's pitchfork review had me thinking it was the second coming of horsepower.)"

I wasn't really thinking about it in that way but maybe I'd now say it is the second coming of horsepower and that's part of what undermines it slightly. I still love many tracks on In Fine Style but it's hard to listen to in full. HP were better rhythmic programmers than Burial I think (nothing here is as startling rhythmically as, say, "Pimp Flavours") but overall Burial has a broader sonic palette.

This is definitely the first time I've received e-mails about a review with half complaining that I was too enthusiastic and the other half that I was too negative.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:20 (seventeen years ago) link

all the same Skream and DMZ as fractured??? Howso sir?

All dubstep sounds fractured to me to a certain extent. Always tripping over itself and creating angular grooves. Skream falls into this paradigm for me - while he might sound non-jittery and so on, I think even 'Monsoon' or 'Request Line' would sound less so mixed into a different genre...

I agree, 'Boys Love Girls' is a 'fractured' sounding track. But it's such an exceptional record!

In any case, Burial is much more melodic and non-jittery than anything in dubstep or grime. The Germanic Basic Channel/Pole axis on the sound is an innovative approach I think. The point is to find a new synthesis, which requires reducing certain aspects associated with the London underground.

This certainly seems to have been overhyped something awful. Of all the dubstep I've been listening to lately, which admittedly is not so much - Skream's Stella Sessions and Skreamizms, some Loefah, Zomby, Blackdown - this is the weakest. Neither superior headphone listening, certainly not something I'd like to hear out and no more 'redolent of the decaying asphalt of the urban landscape of Ken Livingston's London' or whichever poetic trope one wishes to employ, than other things out there.

The notion of "Southern Comfort" being the only good track on there is kinda weird to me. Such a boring beat!

I would put all the vocal tracks ahead of it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 23 July 2006 23:08 (seventeen years ago) link

i was actually listening to one of horsepower's vocal tracks today (not "one u need," the other one) and they have such an odd bass sound. it's not oozy or dread like modern dubstep. it's, like someone said above, very clean and strobing...kind of this very clean, rounded pulse that throbs throughout.

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 23 July 2006 23:35 (seventeen years ago) link

What's the other one Jess? Was it one of the Turn-U-On tracks?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 23 July 2006 23:42 (seventeen years ago) link

gah maybe "electro bass"? (did that have vox? this is where making mix cds with no tracklisting bites you in the ass.) the vocal element is quite minimal really. it might be a dub.

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Monday, 24 July 2006 00:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I was saying on Dissensus the other day that someone really needs to compile and release all the Ghost, Shelflife and Turn-U-On tracks - now that would leave the Burial album for dead.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 24 July 2006 01:05 (seventeen years ago) link

that whole era is so undocumented/collected. i probably have most of them spread across a dozen cd-r's, but such an amazing moment (what...18, 24 months tops?) that's practically forgotten already!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 July 2006 01:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Isn't that "One You Need" though? Or maybe I'm getting confused. Either way it's brilliant.

The Burial remix of Thom Yorke's "And It Rained All Night" is lazier than most Burial things I've heard. I'll probably end up praising it in a few days, knowing how I warm to things, but it really seems more like existing beats grafted under a vocal. Not nearly as good as the Bloc Party mix.

mh, Monday, 17 December 2007 01:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I like the new Burial album quite a lot. If you have a look at the other Burial thread I actually don't really talk about the album quality so much as the dodgy rhetoric people feel compelled to use when discussing him.

Burial seems to be one of those artists for whom one is not allowed to express even a vaguely equivocal position. I gave the first Burial album an 8.1 or something like that for Pitchfork and got more hatemail than for any other review complaining that I was too stupid to recognise a good record when I heard it.

Having said all this Pipecock is correct that in theory I should absolutely adore the second album given he effectively (if unwittingly) followed the advice I gave in my review. Instead I only like it quite a lot, about as much as the first album. I've wondered about this myself.

I suspect that the familiarity with his approach has meant that it's been less precious to me than it would have been had it been released as his first album. My gut reaction is that nothing on Untrue is as good as "You Hurt Me", which provides its blueprint, but it might be more correct to say that after "You Hurt Me" it's harder to be surprised. If anything I've not even given the album the chance to grow on me properly - I've just not been compelled to pull it out that much.

Tim F, Monday, 17 December 2007 01:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I think both albums have the same flaw actually which is that they have four or so amazing tracks and a bunch of pretty forgettable ones.

Alex in SF, Monday, 17 December 2007 02:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I disagree with Tim though. I think the best tracks on Untrue ("Etched Headplate", "Archangel", "Raver") are better than anything on the first record.

Alex in SF, Monday, 17 December 2007 02:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think Untrue is a major step up, in almost every way, for Burial. Still, my favorite of his songs is Unite, from the Soul Jazz comp Box of Dub, Vol. I.

U Hurt Me is v. good, tho.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 17 December 2007 02:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Tim's point about the rhetoric around Burial ties in with my belief that Burial is the kind of goth it's 'okay' to like. "It's dark and spooky and I don't have to admit to liking somebody in bondage gear and ambisexual makeup!"

it's funny to hear some of my friends talk about this record, like one dj dude for whom it's a totally out-of-nowhere sound. like he has no reference points for it at all.

Jordan, Monday, 17 December 2007 03:58 (sixteen years ago) link

archangel is the archetypal burial song. everything else is just a clone or a prototype for it...

...i love the way it doesn't sound like anything else out there but his own works so when you campare the rest of the album or other tunes of his to it, they're found wanting

pollywog, Monday, 17 December 2007 04:08 (sixteen years ago) link

As I said, i think that it's likely that my sense that nothing on the new album is better than "You Hurt Me" is actually reflective of something else, like a drop in interest in Burial generally, rather than the actual quality per se.

Ned I know what you mean but it's no more true for Burial than it was for DJ Shadow - and I think there's a great deal that the two have in common.

Tim F, Monday, 17 December 2007 06:16 (sixteen years ago) link

"I like the new Burial album quite a lot. If you have a look at the other Burial thread I actually don't really talk about the album quality so much as the dodgy rhetoric people feel compelled to use when discussing him."

which is another reason why i was kinda confused, because even though we discussed many things about it, i dont remember you specifically saying whether you liked it or not!

"Having said all this Pipecock is correct that in theory I should absolutely adore the second album given he effectively (if unwittingly) followed the advice I gave in my review. Instead I only like it quite a lot, about as much as the first album. I've wondered about this myself."

when i read that older post, i couldnt even believe it. you totally nailed his direction over a year before the album came out. i had to do a double take on the date to make sure i wasn't imagining things!

"I suspect that the familiarity with his approach has meant that it's been less precious to me than it would have been had it been released as his first album. My gut reaction is that nothing on Untrue is as good as "You Hurt Me", which provides its blueprint, but it might be more correct to say that after "You Hurt Me" it's harder to be surprised. -- Tim F"

for me nothing was ever really "surprising" about his music, but that is also not one of the things i look for in any music. but for me "untrue" album definitely seems like an expansion and a contraction at the same time: he expanded on the ideas in the first album, though mainly in the ideas present in just a few of the tracks. i think it works better because of this (i am one of the people who thinks the space ape jam was the weakest on the first one, simply because it was too "different" and kind of lost the flow of the album) and the tracks that he came up with for the new one are definitely superior to the first album. if anything, i am now more doubtful of the first album simply because of how much more i like the new one!

pipecock, Monday, 17 December 2007 15:24 (sixteen years ago) link

and I think there's a great deal that the two have in common

I know Mackro was thinking more DJ Spooky but I'll buy both as comparison points, and I think we're seeing rhetorical redux bigtime in the vein of the critical response around both ten years back in Burial's case.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 December 2007 15:30 (sixteen years ago) link

i think comparing burial to shadow is pretty close in terms of mood and atmosphere, at least as close any i can think of. not sure why there should be racial baggage with shadow though, he did shit with Paris and his crew included Blackalicious amongst many others, he was no isolated white guy. do you mean in getting crazy hype just because he was a white guy? even still, im not sure that was the exact reason, how many people really knew he was a white guy just from hearing his music? i wouldn't have guessed it and he wasnt even pictured on Endtroducing.....

pipecock, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Just breath, pipecock. There is always racial baggage when white american guy's make hip-hop and I doubt you can find too many pieces from 95-6 on Shadow that didn't mention his race or the fact that his music was out of place in the present world of hip hop.

Anyway I wasn't thinking so much sonically in terms of the Shadow-Burial connection (although there are some similarities, yeah) more just two guys obsessed with a particular strand of a genre that was largely out of vogue at the point where they were making music (Steinski-style cut-n-mix instrumentals for Shadow, El-B-style 2-step) and who achieved as much if not more success from fans who normally wouldn't care about the music scene they were ostensibly and rather distantly a part of (in Burial's case, seemingly by choice, in Shadow's . . . well.)

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 04:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I feel the same way. If I try to listen to it through, by like track five I'm thinking "Oh christ, more dirty bass noises and minimal shuffling beats. Oh, and here come the spectral vocals". Then when a track from the second half of the album comes up on shuffle and I really enjoy it. I'm still not feeling the beat-less tunes though, don't know under what circumstances I'd be in the mood to listen to one.

The nearest I can come up with is that it works quite nicely as a soundtrack to the late night stoner set.

because he doesn't get 90% of his samples from mgs and it would seem from interviews he has a good grounding in 'ardkore, jungle and 2step.

Reason I'm not in any way anticipating his dj kicks is because he isn't a dj.

mh, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Admittedly, it's a subtle track; requires a longer attention span than a lot of music these days. But there's some pretty stunning work going on in there. This isn't a giant leap forward, but a refinement of his sound.

A lot of dubstep (even a lot of the good stuff) tries to grab your attention from the start with some insane new beat. I think one of the reasons Burial will be remembered as one of the genre's greats is because of his sense of restraint. He can hold back on the novelty on one track and then just kill it with a massive beat on the next.

surprised no one's posted this today:

'In a forthcoming interview with Clash, Daddy G of Bristol legends Massive Attack reveals that Burial is planning to make a remix album of Massive Attack material, in a modern equivalent of 1995's Massive Attack and No (sic) Professor's No Protection.

"I don't know if I should really say this … What the plan is... you know that Mad Professor record that we did? (1995's No Protection). Essentially trying to get that together, where Burial essentially remixes quite a lot of the new tracks. Brings out a different version of quite a lot of the tracks that we've done".'

untrue pitch, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 01:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I can't say that Fostercare is among Burial's best tracks, but I like it. It is slight, but that's part of the appeal. I love how you can hear the footsteps falling through the song, like you're following someone wandering the streets alone at night. And the vocal bits are a bit more varied than on Untrue, in pitch, texture and the distortion applied to them.

So not his best song, by any means. But an interesting piece of noir.

Some of the other tracks on Disc One of this Hyperdub comp are slammin', e.g., the Darkstar and Flying Lotus tracks.

i dont like VW shit but i 'get it,' like it has an internal logic & i see where the appeal lies. every defense of this ive read feels reducible to folks being really really glad someone could turn 2step into idm a decade late (give a facile but pretend-intellectualized 'justification' for pop music that doesn't obviously appeal to ppl's populist impulses, just their anti-populist ones)

like, its the kind of thing i dig for a song but i cant really get on board with this 'the artist is a genius & his albums are near perfect' kind of stuff ... it just seems like compared to the endless variety & quality in the genres as a whole that he's inspired by there's a lot more going on, many more strands to follow

i liked 'archangel' for awhile. i thought it made sense w/ the narrative that kinda came up around his music. its just that this narrative works for a song but doesnt really feel like it deserves to define an artist's career, or something -- there's not enough there to maintain my interest over more than a track

I thought Burial was a nerdier Massive Attack for the 2000s, with a little bit of the idm baggage along for the ride. Which is fine, because I really like his stuff.

Almost posted that Daddy G quote, but if you read the original interview, it sounds more like the idea of approaching him's there, not necessarily that he's been approached. Anyone from MA saying they're going to do something is best approached with an "oh, that's a neat idea" if you like it, or dismissive eye-rolling...

Both solid tracks, though I wouldn't say they're pushing any boundaries. Feels like the first one has little Burial input - it's more deep house or something than any kind of dubstep - the second makes a lot of sense as a meeting of soundworlds.

Gold Panda is basically biting Four Tet/The Field anyway from what i've heard but i don't think either of these sound particularly like him. Certainly not Mirror, which sounds like Burial surprisingly enough.

Simon H. Shit (Simon H.), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 05:48 (thirteen years ago) link

These are amazing. Yorke should have thrown Feral into the garbage can and buy the rights to any of these for King of Limbs instead. Imagine how sweet it'd be if Four Tet or Burial joined the rest of Radiohead for an album/tour. I'd definitely be interested in hearing how Johnny Greenwood could contribute to their sound.

Moka, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 10:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Also this might just be me but Four Tet seems to be the real genius behind these burial/four tet collabs. Burial has been a one trick pony for a while now and seriously needs to consider a change of palette in his samples.

Moka, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 10:12 (thirteen years ago) link

moka otm about burial. he should have quit after the first album cos he cant seem to go anywhere else after that other than not quite as good tweaks on what he already did perfectly first time round. though i didnt think the tracks with yorke were that amazing.

superflyguy, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 12:25 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i mean the best tricks on this are the four tet tricks i think, but idk i was a little let down by the last four tet album bc after moth/ringer/love cry i thought he was going down the post-ds path farther than he did, so like I appreciate any excuse he has for making this kind of record.

I'm glad he's dropped that (excuse my terminological illiteracy) "echo beat" that you kept reappearing on Untrue in at least the first 3 songs and a couple later.

The only way I can describe it is that it goes "boomph-ba-da-da-boomph-ba-da - COONK"... "boompha-ba-da-daboomph-ba-da - COONK"

but I mean it really was weird and I was fairly surprised that critics seemed to generally ignore it. It took a couple listenings to realize that he just wasn't transferring the same beat from song to song and only differentiating between them by song titles and atmospherics/samples.

Radical Adults Lick Based God Style (kelpolaris), Monday, 28 March 2011 04:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, I would argue that the beat you are describing, and variations of it, are his signature. You know it's him instantly. He owns it. And for me personally, it still works at album length.

Best spot in London to listen to Burial is under the bridge near Finsbury Park station, I've found. Particularly when waiting for a heavily-delayed night bus.

I've only heard Kindred off of this so far. Personally find it incredible, especially turned right up on decent cans. Especially, yes, walking under overcast skies as I did on Sunday. It's long, but it's definitely set into three distinct movements. The most effective trick is that "lightning crash" that sounds like it's made up of several sounds clustered together, and the way the vocal samples seem to form around these - there's an awful lot of tension - pressure in the meteorological sense of the word.

mh, Friday, 14 December 2012 17:19 (eleven years ago) link

Bought it last night, listened to it a few times with errrr 'suitable' accompaniment...not sure what to make of it yet, feels/is more framgented than we're used to from him. Some of those fragments are lush, almost-housey in their bounce, others are Burial-by-numbers spectral washes with that chain on metal sound he loves. One of the sections samples some late 90s/early00s dance track that's super obvious but I can't quite place it for some reason.

We put on the Kindred EP straight after and I've got to admit that it made this new one sound a bit slight.

rough sleeper is fantastic!

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Saturday, 15 December 2012 14:46 (eleven years ago) link

They're both fantastic. There's very few producers who can come with a similar sound every time and not get boring

paolo, Saturday, 15 December 2012 17:11 (eleven years ago) link

I find "Truant" to be the stronger track. They're both messier and 'sketchier' than his previous releases (including "Ashtray Wasp"). "Rough Sleeper" has some great passages, but it's a bit of a mess as a whole, with some parts more successful than others.

But the build up and sequencing of the first eight and a half minutes of "Truant" are breathtaking... Bevan has a great sense of drama. The segment between 3:50 and 5:13 is some of the best work he's done. I might lazily describe it as Indo-Caribbean Futurism (?) that only could've come out of the UK. It easily gives Shackleton a run for his money. The track sounds a bit like an evolution of the aesthetics of "Fostercare".

A bit of a mixed bag as a whole. Still a worthy effort, though. Would love to see a proper album built on some of the ideas heard here and on Kindred.

azaera, Saturday, 15 December 2012 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

ornamental cabbage (James Morrison), Sunday, 16 December 2012 22:00 (eleven years ago) link

I sort of agree with that 'mini-album' comment. Each track does seem to have 2 or 3 distinct sections. The first time I listened I thought the tracks had changed but they hadn't.

"Rough Sleeper" has some great passages

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Sunday, 16 December 2012 23:52 (eleven years ago) link

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 17 December 2012 13:31 (eleven years ago) link

three weeks pass...

This thing's a grower.

Still not quite sure what to make of the whole organ segment of "Rough Sleeper". There's little as far as momentum to the beat and not really an ambient feel either; kind of stuck somewhere in the middle. But god do things pick up after that. The "light surrounding you" vocals and the chimes are such a welcome new direction.

And "Truant" is still a stunner.

azaera, Monday, 7 January 2013 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

feels like the most refined, 'pop' thing he's done. even if it's a complex series of developing sections or movements. even if he's using a chintz-y lexicon unit to pitch his sounds. don't really consider myself a burial fan, but i've played this new one(two) endlessly. nice to have such frequent, and increasingly varied output from somebody.

'Ashtray Wasp' now his greatest song IMO

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Monday, 2 December 2013 10:56 (ten years ago) link

That bit where the riff comes in quietly at about 1.45 is one of my favourite ever bits where a riff comes in

cardamon, Monday, 2 December 2013 11:54 (ten years ago) link

And that cycling bit at about 3.16

cardamon, Monday, 2 December 2013 11:55 (ten years ago) link

And yeah - it is ashtray wasp that has that bit at 8.00 where it turns into a weird glam groove in a scary sad mist and goes 'Darkness falls upon me' (or is it flies? lies?)

That's a bit of burial I'm always looking for and always forgetting which song it's in

cardamon, Monday, 2 December 2013 11:59 (ten years ago) link

Dunno about anyone else, but I think negative emotions are extremely difficult to put into a piece of music that you'd actually (honestly) want to listen to, it requires a pitch-perfect sensibility to avoid turning into parody – Burial today one of the few people who can do this?

cardamon, Monday, 2 December 2013 12:04 (ten years ago) link

Ashtray Wasp also has the really sad submerged jazz ending

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Monday, 2 December 2013 12:10 (ten years ago) link

" 23 dec. 2013 - UPC: 888003991057. Tracklisting. 1. Rival Dealer. 2. Hiders. 3. Come Down to Us "

Guessing the date might be the physical release since digital was going to be next week (Dec 16th)

that title track is fantastic. and with the second-half of that song, he's still experimenting with longer, weirder, more ambient song-structures (like he did on the truant/rough-sleeper ep).

Daniel, Esq 2, Wednesday, 11 December 2013 13:01 (ten years ago) link

the beginning of hiders reminds me a little of david foster's instrumental theme to st. elmo's fire? but i really dig it, especially as it builds to something almost rock-ish sounding.

this ep feels like a fairly big departure (into interesting directions) to me. initial impression is that this ep is one of the best things i've heard this year.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 16:51 (ten years ago) link

i'm loving this. i feel like there've been glimpses of burial approaching something resembling pop/house in the last two, little melodious rave-y suites we hear snatches of here and there, but nothing as fully fleshed out as on this one.

Come Down To Us is completely ridiculous, isn't it?

MikoMcha, Thursday, 12 December 2013 14:03 (ten years ago) link

I think I'm obsessed with the sprawling hot mess that is this track. The "you are not alone" sample drop at like 10:30 is so hilarious. "There's something out there..." And the concluding dialogue at the end of being transgendered? So the theme is like a Walt Disney meets hardcore continuum Christmas coming out prog-opera?

MikoMcha, Thursday, 12 December 2013 14:15 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, this track. I'm inspired to write some Come Down To Us fan fiction.

If anything, it counters some of the more tasteful, selective nostalgia for the nuum.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 12 December 2013 14:30 (ten years ago) link

This whole queer aspect of the EP, this is really an unexpected turn right? It's like Burial meets DJ Sprinkles.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 12 December 2013 14:50 (ten years ago) link

Is the sample of the transgendered person at the end the same person that is sampled on the last track on his debut "I went in to the bathroom to get some aspirin and I happened to look in the mirror and I swear to God I see something that I can't describe but it sure as hell is not my reflection"?

Rotating prince game (I am using your worlds), Thursday, 12 December 2013 18:09 (ten years ago) link

Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 12 December 2013 18:15 (ten years ago) link

The transgendered person talking is Lana Wachowski, Don't think she appeared on the s/t.

mums go off when i enter the building (monotony), Thursday, 12 December 2013 18:46 (ten years ago) link

idk and maybe this is a cross-post w/ the gender identity thread but the whole prospect of being trapped in a body that isn't "who you are" sounds deeply unsettling and fits w/ burial's project i think. the "other rooms, other worlds" bit at the end of Come Down To Us is key here-- giving voice to liminal states, androgynous voices/vocal samples where the gender is switched mid-sample, ~murkiness~ etc-- all this is old-hat burial stuff, only thing that's new here is a level of explicitness that has been missing from his catalog. or else is new to my ears at least.

kyenkyen, Thursday, 12 December 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

Listening to this for the first time now. You really know an artists is a critically overindulged one-trick pony when a change of sound this minor is hailed as a controversial left turn.

festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 20 December 2013 16:18 (ten years ago) link

damn this is still amazing. the few-second stretch on the title-track, just around the 1:00 mark, where the song's main riff is kinda audible, but slurred and submerged, then jumps to the forefront and locks in, is brilliant.

Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 2 January 2014 02:36 (ten years ago) link

Nobody forced you to like him or click on this thread, or did they?

Sorry, didn't realise this was only a thread for positive comments. FWIW I do like Burial, or some of his stuff at least, but he is very indulged and granted a level of reverence that 99% of producers aren't, even when he's being lazy or uninspired or just a bit crap, and the tracks here don't represent anywhere near as much of a curveball as is being claimed in some quarters.

Matt DC, Thursday, 2 January 2014 13:27 (ten years ago) link

you're right. should've thrown every identifiable aspect of his sound out. these tracks, especially the b-side, sound nothing like anything else he's done. i don't see where you are getting that vibe from it. you don't have to like it, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

illegalblues, Thursday, 2 January 2014 16:17 (ten years ago) link

I've accused Burial of being a one-trick pony in the past, but I felt like the new single was making a big statement even before he came out with his statement about bullying. The sample choices and way they're used are extra evocative on this release. I think he's getting better with time and I'd rather play his last 2 eps than his first album at this point.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 2 January 2014 16:24 (ten years ago) link

the tracks here don't represent anywhere near as much of a curveball as is being claimed in some quarters

no, but it's a noticeable change, just like his experimenting with very long pieces, with several movements, was a noticeable change, just like his moving into more propulsive, upbeat tunes (with four-tet) was, at the time, a noticeable change. i don't mind him mining his signature-sound, especially since he is moving it around, albeit incrementally. i actually prefer this to the genre-hopping you see with some artists (including my beloved r.e.m., who developed and discarded several signature-sounds, and kinda hung around other genres for an album or so, with varying success).

I don't really like it for roughly the same reason as Local Garda, it's his usual sound with the addition of some other really out-of-place elements. "critically overindulged one-trick pony"

I'd only vaguely heard of Burial before hearing it for the first time by accident, around the time of Untrue. But I can attest that if I'd heard all the talking about Burial before hearing the music I'd probably see him as overindulged too.

I've barely kept up with the writing about Burial since those days – am I right in thinking he's become a 'breakout artist' kind of, like how Aphex Twin finds his way into playlists and record collections and conversations that peers of Aphex wouldn't get into?

Don't think one-trick pony works though, too many different things going on across the records. It might all take place in a broken mirror but you get different pictures floating across it.

"claustro" has to be his best track since rival dealer

ufo, Thursday, 30 May 2019 13:30 (four years ago) link

four months pass...

so, if you take all of his tracks released under just burial post-rival dealer, you can make a pretty damn good full length. we're talking 2015-present basically.

chronologically, the songs are:

temple sleeper
young death
nightmarket
subtemple
beach fires
pre dawn
indoors
rodent
claustro
state forest

that he staggered the release of this material over the course of several years i think lessened its collective impact, unfortunately. but if you take this stuff in as the proper full length follow-up to untrue, it's a pretty bold step (forward?).

also totally with ufo on 'claustro' being an absolute jam and one of his best.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 15 October 2019 17:56 (four years ago) link

temple sleeper
young death
nightmarket
subtemple
beach fires
pre dawn
indoors
rodent
claustro
state forest

so the reason for this revive is because i've been listening to a playlist of just this tracklist and it's really pretty good. the sequence this way is pretty wild. hooks you up with a dope beat up front with 'temple sleeper' but then uses the hard transitions on 'young death' and 'nightmarket' to go way off into experimental (arguably non-musical) territory until 'predawn' gets back into beatier songs. the transition from 'indoors' into 'rodent' into 'claustro' is very epic and good. 'state forest' as the closer is so satisfying after what preceded it.

burial is good fall music, btw.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 01:29 (four years ago) link

'Street Halo' through 'Rival Dealer' probably amounts to my favourite album-or-two worth of Burial--equivalent to a 3rd and 4th LP.

The work post'Rival' has felt a little wispy and indistinct--but I'll try queuing it up as a body.

Soundslike, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 02:17 (four years ago) link

yeah the 2011-2013 releases from Street Halo to Rival Dealer are absolutely his best work (especially Rival Dealer which is absolutely transcendent) and have far surpassed Untrue for me. the Massive Attack remix EP from that period is unfairly overlooked too

his work since has been pretty hit and miss unfortunately. the ambient pieces have been pleasant enough but relatively underwhelming and while i love "claustro", the other more beat-driven tracks he's released over the past few years haven't done much for me.

ufo, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 11:44 (four years ago) link

Genuinely love 'Subtemple' as an ambient piece but 'Young Death' is the best thing he's done in this timeframe imo. Not into his rave revival efforts, hope he branches out further.

nashwan, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 12:26 (four years ago) link

Tried this playlist today, agreed that it works well as an album. Made me laugh when the banging beat started on pre-dawn after roughly half an hour of ambience. If this was an album, Rodent would be the hit single.

I am using your worlds, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 14:35 (four years ago) link

so, i don't know why i never did this before, but if you take the songs from his 2011-2013 releases and put them in order to form an album, not only is it really long, it's actually a pretty great follow-up to untrue. kind of takes the super pretty aspects of 'ghost hardware' and 'shell of light' and builds on them and lets it simmer until it closes super appropriately with 'come down to us'; and it ends up as a burial "album" that is actually very pleasant and life-affirming. really am starting to think that i agree with ufo in saying that this is his most fertile period. the way i sequenced it is just the running order of the eps as they were chronologically released:

street halo
nyc
stolen dog
kindred
loner
ashtray wasp
truant
rough sleeper
rival dealer
hiders
come down to us

it hangs together really tightly.

really hoping the 'claustro' / 'state forest' single is a precursor to something bigger and that that is forthcoming soon.

02 Beachfires
03 Subtemple
04 Young Death
05 Nightmarket
06 Hiders
07 Come Down to Us
08 Claustro
09 Rival Dealer

CD2:
01 Kindred
02 Loner
03 Ashtray Wasp
04 Rough Sleeper
05 Truant
06 Street Halo
07 Stolen Dog
08 NYC

missing a few tracks though - "pre dawn", "indoors", "temple sleeper" and "rodent". i guess "pre dawn", "indoors" and "temple sleeper" were't on hyperdub so that's maybe part of it, but "rodent" was. not that i really miss them

yeah I love this already

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 6 January 2022 15:58 (two years ago) link

I like it. I would almost prefer if it didn't have the voices, which are just a little too BURIAL for me, a bit jarring to start with and then become monotonous after a while.
Haven't listened to that much Burial in recent years but I'm surprised he's still mining this very specific "foster care advert" aesthetic this far into his career, cos as nice as this is, it could be slices from Untrue but with the drums taken out.

definitely a sign of the times that this thread isn't at the of of the new answers page. In my day, a new Burial release was an event!

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 7 January 2022 19:33 (two years ago) link

Ha. New Burial is just a cozy part of the holiday tradition now.

I like it too...obv it's not very 'memorable' in the way that Untrue is, but I like the Burial vocal chops combined with the Burial ambience. And I think there's more going on in the music than seems immediately apparent.

I don't know how much I'll return to it, but I hope I do.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 January 2022 19:49 (two years ago) link

Mostly collected here, the first half are the ambient ones, I prefer the bangers like Claustro and Street Halo, and still like Come Down to Us for long-form emo ambient Burial:

his peak was the run of Kindred, Truant/Rough Sleeper and Rival Dealer in 2012-13, with Rival Dealer being his absolute best, check out those first

ufo, Friday, 7 January 2022 23:25 (two years ago) link

co-sign that, ufo.

(although i did really like 'claustro' and consider it among that lot of "his absolute best")

Really enjoyed this new one. Ran it several times through. As calstars said - you try to listen actively and it takes you away so quickly.

I've warmed up a bit to "Chemz" and "Dolphins," but I will go to my grave not understanding why Antidawn was not hailed as a major statement upon release. Even here, there didn't seem to be much enthusiasm for a record that is to me a really fascinating pivot from one of the most innovative artists of the past twenty years. Maybe everyone was secretly hoping for a return to form, ie just repeating Untrue but less good?

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 12 August 2022 21:41 (one year ago) link

Antidawn is what my niece and nephew call my wife, but hey

Mark G, Friday, 12 August 2022 21:45 (one year ago) link

untrue isn't even his peak though, kindred through to rival dealer is much much better

i don't think antidawn was that much of a pivot though, he'd been putting out similar ambient stuff occasionally for a while, going back to "subtemple" and "young death"/"nightmarket"

ufo, Friday, 12 August 2022 21:49 (one year ago) link

That's true, but committing himself so completely to that vibe was rather unexpected, no? And I actually agree about Untrue, I just assume that's the consensus pick. The early singles will always be my favorite Burial shit, along with the self titled LP

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 12 August 2022 21:53 (one year ago) link

from 2016 onwards his output has been kinda all over the place so going further with a style he'd already spent a while exploring wasn't really a big surprise, him putting out something album length was though

ufo, Friday, 12 August 2022 22:04 (one year ago) link

Been hammering Rival Dealer recently - never not sent into a different world when the "saw myself crying" bit rolls in on "Come Down to Us"

bain4z, Friday, 12 August 2022 22:20 (one year ago) link

i still think about dog latin's "foster care advert" remark and i lol. but i love that shit

I agree! I'm not sure why most people go for Untrue over the debut but there you go

paolo, Sunday, 14 August 2022 09:51 (one year ago) link

Antidawn was a bit of a let down for me I gotta say. Committing himself to that vibe over an album length release was a bit of a surprise but it's not like it came completely from nowhere, as has already been pointed out.

The first track, “Hospital Chapel” (the title itself is almost too painfully evocative if you’ve ever lost a loved one in a hospital), is a slow ambient track that I can see people not connecting to - it takes a long time to get going - but it is great

Dan S, Friday, 21 October 2022 00:05 (one year ago) link

i don't think this is "more like his older work", it's more ambient stuff

ufo, Friday, 21 October 2022 01:12 (one year ago) link

high-frequency chimes, ominous low-end synths and percussion, vinyl crackles, cuts and buzzes, beatific vocal samples, ghostly sound effects, and a mournful dream state

elsewhere: great way to tease new music in the streaming era. all those unauthorized fan uploads on youtube had to have been expected by xl; subvert everything.

revisiting his past year or so of tunes because of this and i have to say how much i've come to like 'unknown summer.' it's such a subtle slow burning joy of a track+ufo i have to challenge your assertion that it doesn't at least compete with 'boy sent from above' in that category.

(let us also not forget the thom yorke collabs, but i digress; 'boy sent from above' a very significant tune)

further, the few stray non-hyperdub tracks from the past few years -'temple sleeper', 'pre dawn'+'indoors'- are all pretty neat in retrospect of this new material for xl.

Definitely my favorite Burial in a while, and I say that as a staunch fan and apologist for ambient Burial and the very underrated Antidawn EP. I liked Chemz / Dolphinz and Streetlands, too, though not as much.
