Rapeman? Do EP's disqualify a band?

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:09 (twenty years ago)

No, that's even better. And the Normal counts then.

snowballing (snowballing), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Monks?

mikko (mikko), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:20 (twenty years ago)

The classic Pink Floyd line-up with Syd, which was almost a different band.

zeus (zeus), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Ah, I was this close to saying the Syd era Floyd. Instead I'll throw in Rites of Spring.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:26 (twenty years ago)

Ah, but Syd is on "A saucerful of secrets", two tracks at last count.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:29 (twenty years ago)

I also wonder if a band would be disqualified if they put out a couple of singles as well only one album.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:39 (twenty years ago)

Mono (the nineties english duo) - Fornica Blues

snowballing (snowballing), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Lightnin' Rod (an album and a single)

Baby Huey & The Babysitters (2 singles and an album)

Main Source (handful of singles, 2 compilation tracks and 1 album..that lame mark 2 version minus Large Professor rhyming/on production doesn't count)

Deep Wound (a 7" and two comp songs)

Siege (a demo bootlegged onto 7" and 3 comp songs)

Odd Squad (1 album)

Real Live (an album and a compilation track)

Kiss It Goodbye (an album and a single)

Manzel (a couple of singles and some unearthed songs 20 years later)

Marva Whitney (a few singles and an album)

Negative F.X (a demo that was released as an album)

Money Boss Players (one ep, a few 12"s and a couple of comp tracks)

b0ring, Thursday, 16 March 2006 13:30 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe that no one has suggested The United States of America yet! Plus, there are no pesky compilations to confuse matters either

Life Without Buildings

ample parking (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 16 March 2006 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Ooops. So compilation albums count as full albums, then?

No, they actually made two entirely original albums: Philosophy of the World (1969) and Shaggs' Own Thing (1982). The eponymous Rounder comp came out a few years after Shaggs' Own Thing.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Thursday, 16 March 2006 13:50 (twenty years ago)

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Orchestra Luna, although admittedly the cult is quite small.

The Secret, who did the Cockney Rebel soundalike "I'm Alive."

There's that "Phantom's Divine Comedy" record that does for The Doors what the first Klaatu LP did for The Beatles.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Dart - 36 cents an hour (on che). they did an ep later kind of.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

let's empty the cupboards:

Moldy Peaches, Avalanches (I'm not holding my breath), Moby Grape, Fire Engines, New Radicals, Linda Perhacs, Simon Warner, Ultrasound, and Subway Sect (I think)...

katie, a princess (katie, a princess), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Neu! made three albums.
-- Jeff K

Heh heh...I know, but they all sound the same to me! (Same LP covers too.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Ummm, Moby Grape had at least six albums (more, if you count reunion LPs). Or did you mean Skip Spence? Or Bob Mosley? (one solo LP apiece).

James, Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Any room for cult bands that neever really made any albums? Rocket from the Tombs, Electric Eels, ...

Dave NSFW (dave225.3), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:40 (twenty years ago)

hmmm...I had always thought that Moby Grape had only one proper LP...let me make up for that:

Chris Bell

hank s (hank s), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:43 (twenty years ago)

No, Moby Grape released quite a few, up to 1971 or so (and then a couple more years later). The problem is that the first one is the only LP that ever seems to be available on CD. I'm not even sure the others were ever made available on disc (outside of some tracks being included on compilations).

James, Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

But what more Grape do you need than the first album?
Morgan (I can't find out anything about these psych rockers, their song "Welcome to the Void" is so classic!)

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:54 (twenty years ago)

The Ramones.

....

But seriously, now, uh... I can't believe no one's mentioned Emitt Rhode's band, The Merry-Go-Round.

Ryan C. (Badarts), Thursday, 16 March 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

erm... Emitt Rhodes', that is to say.

Box of Fish - Slap 'Em Round the Gills

-- ratty (ra...), March 17th, 2006.

Certainly had it's moments tho a bit patchy. Sounds fantastic for an eighties album except for a truly horrible digital piano sound on some tunes. I thought they were shithot for a year or two but never fulfilled their potential. Perano was a major talent I think.

dr lulu (dr lulu), Thursday, 16 March 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 17 March 2006 01:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna cheat a bit on this one:

The Gothic Archies

daavid (daavid), Friday, 17 March 2006 03:07 (twenty years ago)

has anyone mentioned Robert Johnson or Skip James yet?

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 17 March 2006 03:26 (twenty years ago)

We should get clearer on our definitions. :-) Lots of the above have made EPs, sometimes multiple EPs, although not strictly "albums." F'r example, the Gothic Archies had two EPs, Liquid Liquid had three, Young Marble Giants had at least one other EP, and we've found a way to cheat on a handful of other answers too!

One could argue that the Gothic Archies, being a Stephin Merritt project, should be disqualified anyway, since it's just another pseudonymous diversion from Merritt's "day job" in the Magnetic Fields, which really is the true cult band out of all of his various creations and projects. If we equivocate by saying that the Gothic Archies and the Magnetic Fields are really the same group, then they get disqualified from the thread altogether.

Or maybe I should shut up and go back to my Roxicet again.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Friday, 17 March 2006 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Didn't the Germs only have one proper LP?

Also Crosby, Stills and Nash, and CSNY, although I think they may have yanked Neil back for one reunion LP.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 17 March 2006 08:03 (twenty years ago)

Nig Heist! I think.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 17 March 2006 08:06 (twenty years ago)

DNA maybe? I know they released various stuff here and there, but it's all culminated on one disc now. Same thing with Scratch Acid.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 17 March 2006 08:09 (twenty years ago)

Terris.

wait, to be a cult band, does someone have to like you other than the NME?

Lee F# (fsharp), Friday, 17 March 2006 08:52 (twenty years ago)

probably.

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 17 March 2006 08:55 (twenty years ago)

Stump

Son of Bazerk

Beatnigs (DHH doesn't really count)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 17 March 2006 12:25 (twenty years ago)

I thought about Stump, but figured their myriad EPs disqualified them.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Friday, 17 March 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

They have myriad EPs?

1 - Nevermind, then.

2 - Where can I find them?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 17 March 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Since when were EPs equivalent to albums?

Dadaismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Friday, 17 March 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Stump have two albums? "Quirk Out" and "A Fierce Pancacke"?

Johnny Jarvis, Friday, 17 March 2006 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Anal Magic and Rev Dwight Frizell
Chinaboise
Kenneth Higney

If EP's don't disqualify a band, then I'm going to throw Kleenex in!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Two completely fried LPs that are cult in my house:

Foodbrain - Social Gathering
Horrific Child - L'Etrange Monsieur Whinster

rombald, Friday, 17 March 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

I amend my earlier post to "Where Can I hear Quirk Out?"

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 17 March 2006 23:52 (twenty years ago)

If EP's don't disqualify a band, then I'm going to throw Kleenex in!

But they made two albums as LiLiPUT...

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Friday, 17 March 2006 23:57 (twenty years ago)

What!? I thought they made only one! I gotta go check those notes again (obviously I heard it all from that double disc). But it's all on one double disc, so maybe it kind of counts. In a way.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 18 March 2006 01:04 (twenty years ago)

What!? I thought they made only one!

LiLiPUT and Some Songs.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Saturday, 18 March 2006 01:15 (twenty years ago)

The Daughters of Albion, whose self-titled and only album is also rather great and distressingly not on CD.

Cynic - Focus -- the robot death metal classic

larssen (larssen), Monday, 20 March 2006 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Um, someone did mention the La's.

And I am just now getting the funny, funny Ramones joke way back. (That even though they made 20 albums, they all sounded the same, so they're the same album.) Har har.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Guess Modern Talking is in the same category as Ramones then (except they were hardly a "cult band")

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 20 March 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

EG & Alice.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 20 March 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Jeff Buckley, if we're talking proper albums.

Hurrah for the person who mentioned Life Without Buildings.

It's been almost three years since the Dykehouse album, wonder if we'll ever hear from him again.

Cibo Matto. Yes, I know they put out two albums. Still miss them, though.

Relaxed Muscle were funny.

Emily B (Emily B), Monday, 20 March 2006 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Emily: Not to nitpick, but regarding Dykehouse, it has been about two years since Midrange came out. He's a friend of mine & I know he is working on new material & recording at home. From what I hear, he is still operating in the dreampop mode, but trying to push beyond the "paying homage" thing that certain critics seemed to have such a field day with last time around.

Sexy MFA (Hexy M.F.), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 03:07 (twenty years ago)

I venture to say Angus Maclise, as only one official single and perhaps one record of his material was released during his lifetime. Now we can find loads of compiled material and so on, but this doesn't really count. He is totally a cult hero.

trees (treesessplode), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 03:31 (twenty years ago)

Not to nitpick, but regarding Dykehouse, it has been about two years since Midrange came out

Ah, well, I was wrong then. But good, I really liked the album a lot and will be glad to hear a new one.

Emily B (Emily B), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 03:42 (twenty years ago)

There are two Embrace's Geir, one with only one album and one with four albums and two comp's.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 10:00 (twenty years ago)

THANK YOU BeeOK!! Plus we are talking about "cult" bands, right?? : )

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Okay, now I feel stupid for not remembering this, but, I just barely remembered a band that I freaking LOVE who only released one EP. mabey a track or two on a comp, but basically just an EP. And that band is

PEACE CORPSE!!!!
I can't say whether they are a cult band or not, but they sure are in my book. Please do comment on them if you like them or not, or I shall be forced to create a thread based solely on them!!!

Just because they had to change their name for legal reasons doesn't mean Cocoa Brovaz/Tek & Steele aren't the same duo.

Liaisons Dangereuses, just saw some very cool live stuff by them on youtube, they were definitely cult, and only made that one album!

Sunsonic - though not a cult band as such, just that one of the duo supposedly joined a cult causing the band to no longer exist.

For a band that only released a demo and a 7", Strid has a remarkable cult status in Metal circles.

xpost. Cardinal didn't release another album, it's true, but 3-4 songs emerged from their attempted reunion, and they're pretty great. Google can find...

Oh, Vaselines (mentioned upthread) obviously not so anymore.

V-Effect not yet mentioned, and their one is pretty great. Skyband is another one, though that's more of a supergroup.

I think this has finally been answered between the latest version of Vernon Joynson's Fuzz Acid & Flowers REvisited and Richard Morton Jack's Endless Trip. Love that lp, wish it would get a legit reissue. Should appeal to fans of Wooden Shjips I think

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 13:16 (fifteen years ago)

good call re One Dove.

i'm still holding out for the pre-touch up version of that album to get a release.

never heard it, but it was supposed to be a lot better than the official version.

mark e, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

I believe it was released, as the LP version (a double, I had one, and I think it's on a minidisc somewhere)

Mark G, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 13:50 (fifteen years ago)

oh !
didn't know that. i thought it was only ever made available prior to them signing to Boys Own as a promotional item and so never officially released.
guess its time to go a googling.

Delakota only made one (pretty good) album (which had one all-time favourite amazing single on it).

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 9 March 2012 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

Bark Psychosis only made one lp as a band. They also had 2 compilations of early stuff etc plus about 10 years later Graham Sutton came back and used the bandname for another lp with none of the other members.
Can't really think of a Bark Psychosis without John Ling
