UNDERGROUND LOVERS - How is the other stuff??? I only have "Dream It Down"...

I think it's a great album... I like the female vocalist better but songs like "Holiday" and "Recognize" are incredible. I live in the US and I know they didn't release anything else here but I heard they have all these lps in Australia and other countries. Can anyone help me out??? Todd tejones@kforce.com

Hi there. I've got Underground Lovers' first two albums - "Get to know" and "Leaves me blind". The first was from 1990/91 and is good to great, while the second was in 1992 and is superb. I don't think any of their other LPs got released here in Britain, I did find a website for them which listed five albums including the first two. But from what I've got, I'd say all the records are worth seeking out.

I've got most of their albums, and Leaves Me Blind is still The One, as far as I'm concerned. Just for the opening minute of music alone, really.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Leaves Me Blind is excellent of course and probably their key album (I always found the first album a bit too unformed really) but I can never rave enough about 99's Cold Feeling, which augments their quasi-shoegazer haze with shades of Kraftwerk, Neu! and New Order (Anthony Carew once even called them Neu! Order) - chiefly there's some gorgeously morose synth-pop epics, but really the range of the album is shocking. As an album it's got a very strong Kid A/Amnesiac feel to it.

Plus extra kudos for getting Merida Suxxex from The Paradise Motel in as guest vocalist (what on earth is she doing these days???). If anything she does the whole methadone-coma thing even better than Philippa Nihil, though the latter has the classier name no doubt.

I've pretty much heard all of them and "Leaves Me Blind" is the best of the lot. "Dream It Down" and the one that came after it (whose title escapes me) are both quite strong albums too.

I have a big soft spot for the first album ("Get To Notice" is what it's sometimes called but it's self titled really. Blue sleeve.) but having heard it recently for the first time in a long time I was shocked at the quality of the production (ie. not that great). I've got a bit of a conflict of interest with that record as well (their drummer at the time recently produced my band's record, and my bass player took the photo on the inner sleeve. honest!)

Merida has apparently returned to her librarian job, if I recall correctly. I gather there was a fair bit of wound-licking to be done after the Bickford Motel split up.

Anyone have current status for the band? Listening to _Dream It Down_ now, and wondering if they put anything out after _Cold Feeling_.

scampering alpaca, Monday, 31 March 2008 16:13 (sixteen years ago) link

They did a soundtrack for a film (Mallboy) but I don't know what else after that, if anything.

Tim F, Monday, 31 March 2008 22:14 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah they're long gone. vince had a new band a couple of years ago who were pretty good but they seem to have fizzled out, he's now doing mist & sea.

one of the GB3 records had the most dead-on rip of 'smalltown boy' i've ever heard.

i think one of 'em actually directed mallboy, too!

it's really great. if i had to whinge about something i feel the sound is a little dry and anaemic at times but it's become my second favourite record of theirs (after LMB o course)

top 3 of the year for me

I agree that the sound of the record is a bit flat, especially on the uptempo tracks which is a bit of a shame since they are so amazingly propulsive. I would love to witness "Can For Now" live.

It feels like the most integrated of their albums? Like I can see bits of every previous release informing stuff here but in this really natural and intuitive manner.

Tim F, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 00:59 (ten years ago) link

What the hell, I completely missed news of this! WANT.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 01:01 (ten years ago) link

Digging this album a lot. I keep thinking "Can For Now" is Sonic Youth!

And it's on iTunes, nice.

Actually in checking their full entry how is it I missed Ways T'burn and Mallboy?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:37 (ten years ago) link

tour-previewed last year, released in April

Ways t'Burn got much radio love back when. Mallboy discussed upthread but was really a GBVG album iirc

Great to hear a "reformation" record which takes genuine risks, they're true originals in my book.

Who else would concoct a Go Betweens homage as perverse as "Riding"?

My thoughts exactly.

i actually own Dream It Down and Leaves Me Blind and quite liked both of those back in the day. will have to hear this new album from what people are saying.

Man I had forgotten how amazing Cold Feeling is. "Put Me In Your Movie" is just the best.

OTOH the two available songs from the forthcoming album kinda bore me.

Tim F, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 09:09 (seven years ago) link

A pity -- but yes I should go back to Cold Feeling sometime...

opening track of 'leaves me blind', 'eastside stories', is really quite a thing.
6 mins of big bassline, pounding drums, and layers of guitars/atmospherics.
not sure i have ever really delved much further into the album ...

Very nostalgic for that Guernica period of 4AD.

for its age, this cd sounds absolutely fantastic.
no remastering required.

ahh yeah, used to skip to this one as well.
8 mins of house of love styled groove + guitars.

Been meaning to check these guys out for yonks. Gave the "Wonderful Things" comp a spin and like most of it. Is it a good cherry picking of their pre-reformation period?

Also, any truth to the story that their name is an amalgam of The Velvet Underground and The Modern Lovers?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 2 December 2017 02:59 (six years ago) link

Yeah, that's a good selection of highlights. The Rushall Station selections seem a bit arbitrary, but then it's quite a consistent and understated record. (And under-rated, if this thread is any guide.)

Ok, I've gotten full into these guys. Picked up "Leaves Me Blind" last year and was blown away that I had missed them back in the day, it really fits in perfectly with the early 90s shoegaze scene but adds something uniquely Australian. Then I finally went back and listened to the rest of their catalog and picked up "Dream It Down", "Rushall Station" and the really intriguing "Cold Feeling". (I passed on "Ways T'Burn", that direction didn't work for me.)

Now to check out their reunion material...

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 14:54 (four years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfNBH_zyPe8 is a great video. "The Rerun" is maybe my favorite of the reformation tunes. Still absorbing the new record, but glad they released it as on cd vs. vinyl/download only.

Anytime someone falls for the Undies, I give a RIYL tangent to Glide. The same Oz mixtape swap that introduced me to me "In My Head" and "Takes You Back", turned me on to Glide, Custard, You Am I, TISM, Karma County, and a handful of others. Great stuff. Glide put out four albums (one posthumous to the singer's death) and a bunch of singles, all worth hearing.

Funny enough, I was way into Glide in the late 90s due to their being championed by The Big Takeover magazine. Wonderful stuff indeed, ending so tragically.

I struggle to remember much about Ways T'Burn when it's not playing but I've got a lot of mileage out of this performance of Starsigns on Saturday morning yoof oriented TV.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 28 November 2019 00:43 (four years ago) link

Aside from Starsigns, the only WTB which stays with me is the title track, languid and sweet.
