Also, forget Ether, that he was able to step out after he got smoked on his own track via "Renegade" shows loadsa self-confidence.

27. The luau was sharp, right Jay? "On the strength money!"

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't really think he got smoked on Renegade. They have really different styles, and Eminem's is more obvious, but Jay has some great lines in that song.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:06 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't know, I always fastforward to Em's verse.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:10 (twenty years ago)

SIDE QUESTION:

Am I the only one that thinks "Ether" is kinda meh...I like the Takeover like 1 million times more...but the general consesus is that Jay got pwned by Nas...I don't get it....Same thing w/LL Cool J and Canibus...Second Round KO kills LL's responses, but I always chalked that up to LL being more popular and Canibus never sold.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:13 (twenty years ago)

Motherf***ers
Say that I'm foolish
I only talk about jewels
(Bling bling)
Do you fools
Listen to music or
Do you just skim
Through it?
See I'm influenced
By the ghetto you ruined
That same dude
You gave nothin'
I made somethin' doin'
What I do through
And through and
I give you the news
With a twist
It's just his
Ghetto point-of-view
The renegade
You been afraid
I penetrate pop culture
Bring 'em a lot closer
To the block where they
Pop toasters
And they live
With they moms
Got dropped roasters
From botched robberies
Niggaz crotched over
Mommy's knocked up
'Cause she wasn't
Watched over
Knocked down
By some clown
When child support knocked
No he's not around
Now how that
Sound to ya?
Jot it down
I bring it
Through the ghetto
Without ridin' 'round
Hidin' down duckin' strays
From frustrated youths
Stuck in they ways
Just read a magazine
That f***ed up my day
How you rate music
That thugs with
Nothin' relate to it?
I help them see they way
Through it, not you
Can't step in my pants
Can't walk in my shoes
Bet everything you worth
You lose your tie
And your shirt

26.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:13 (twenty years ago)

M@tt - otm, but you forget that Canibus brags about his "ass-eating" skills which may have had unintentional effect.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Jay's style is much less rhythm-heavy -- almost talky -- so it doesn't hit you as hard next to Em's, but I actually like Jay's verse better. It's a little like putting Steve Cropper next to Eddie Van Halen in a guitar-off.

xpost Yeah I always thought Ether was weak too, especially next to Takeover.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:16 (twenty years ago)

M@tt - otm, but you forget that Canibus brags about his "ass-eating" skills which may have had unintentional effect.

haha i forgot about that! canibus is such a nutball! but some of that shit is awesome...watch me rip the mic from your arm, stab you in the groin, stick you for your vanguard award....99 percent of your fans wear high heels.....trained to run 50 miles through soft sand....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:32 (twenty years ago)

99% of your fans don't exist! OHHHHH

...that line didn't even make sense. You're right.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:41 (twenty years ago)

xpost
takeover was lousy music criticism set to a beat. ether was slow and methodical, dismantling jay as a person and as an artist. i like jay, and feel pretty silly debating this in 2006, but facts remain.

s>c>, Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:30 (twenty years ago)

'cockafella' 'gay-z' = dismantling jay as a person and as an artist?

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:34 (twenty years ago)

Jay-Z vs. Nas threads: The Next Generation

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:35 (twenty years ago)

wait, who actually thinks "Ether" pwned Jay-Z? That song sucks.

And yeah, I always cringe at the ass-eating lines in "2nd Round K.O." (too bad, 'coz the rest of the song is surprisingly fucking convincing)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:36 (twenty years ago)

ether = lot more than just calling jay gay. the third verse of that song not only dissed jay, it defined him. it provided listeners with a context for seeing jay as emotionally weak and vulnerable, artistically derivative and shallow, and ethically and morally challenged. it was personal and savage, and did a lot more to humanize jay than jay's own attempts on the black album did.

s>c>, Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:49 (twenty years ago)

See to me when he got all personal like that it just came off as desperation. "You're ugly" - thats the best you've got? Speaking of washed up new yorker rap beef, you know Cam just dissed Jay right? He also calls Jay-Z ugly. And he talks shit about his sandals. And says he looks like Joe Camel.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:55 (twenty years ago)

deej, no disrespect, but read the third verse again:

http://www.ohhla.com/anonymous/nas/still/ether.nas.txt

most methodical, witty and painful diss ever, by a long shot. there's a reason that the term ethered has become a hip-hop synonym for owned.

besides, all jay really said was that illmatic was nas' only hot album (so not true) and that "the world is yours" wasn't a hot song (once again...).

yeah, i heard that cam is dissing jay. i don't know...new york rap is dead cuz people still make cock-rocking threads about jay-z, biggie and nas. this is like the second thread on ilm recapping jay's 100 best lines (and they're pretty bad selections, btw) and this is one of the only like three or four threads on ilm about hip-hop. i love jay, biggie, nas, etc...i like them a lot...but nyc hip-hop has collapsed under the weight of their history and fiddy's greed. sorry for the tangent. i'll blame the patron.

s>c>, Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:16 (twenty years ago)

roffle did you say you'd blame Patrin?

No but seriously I agree w you about NYC rap being lame now, but uh 1) my quotes werent bad! 2) "The World Is Yours" is pretty awful 3) yeah I don't agree about the album thing but I just thought Jay's performance was a lot more effective because it seemed so effortless. Nas sounded mean but humorless and it sounded awkward and creepy to me.

I actually went back and read the diss on ohhla after you posted, I know there's more to it. I just dont think he pulled it off. (And there's plenty of wrong shit he said too - Jay stole Nas' style? Whatever) Agree to disagree about that one. Esp. because its 2006 and we're debating Ether vs. Takeover!

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:23 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait never mind what I said about "World is Yours" I was thinking of "If I Ruled The World." "World is Yours" is classic of course.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:24 (twenty years ago)

it provided listeners with a context for seeing jay as emotionally weak and vulnerable

uh, which is what makes him great. moron.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

i love jay, biggie, nas, etc...i like them a lot...but nyc hip-hop has collapsed under the weight of their history

I think you're kind of OTM about that, actually.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually not sure he's dissing "World is Yours" there, he's just showing how he did more with one idea.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Nas on Ether kind of reminds me of John Kerry responding to Bush/Swift Boaters/any other attacks -- he always sounded angry more in a frustrated than a tough way. Jay's attack on Nas in takeover sounds focused and self-assured. Nas in Ether sounds like he's just trying to come up with every diss he can think of. He has some moments but then blows them by tossing out all these other weak lines.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:35 (twenty years ago)

hahaha...yeah, i'll blame nate. i've been waiting so long for him to turn in his aceyalone review that i've been driven to debating nas vs. jay. you hear that, nate?

and whatevah gabb. jay z's personna, if not always his lyrics, was until that point based on him being arrogant and untouchable. just read the examples given in this thread. but i'll stop now, cuz just like jay said about argueing with fools...

BTW Nas also gets the wrong Rockefeller in that song which is kind of dumb.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:40 (twenty years ago)

xpost
nas sounded authoritative on ether. if you want frustrated anger, see jay z on superugly. i still have the mp3 of when jay showed up at hot 97 after the supposedly definitive phone poll re: nas v. ether. after jay loss, and by a pretty wide margin, he sounded sad.

and after superugly came out, when his mother called up the radio station and made jay apologize on air...classic. that's my jay z moment #25 actually.

s>c>, Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:43 (twenty years ago)

Dude I turned that Aceyalone review in almost two hours ago. (On a 1/20 deadline, rite?) It woulda been sooner but I had to concoct a better closing line than "damn it when is RJD2 gonna produce that Ludacris record he always wanted instead".

disco violence (disco violence), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:50 (twenty years ago)

jay z's personna, if not always his lyrics, was until that point based on him being arrogant and untouchable.

uh, if you don't understand the concept of 'subtext'. or if you ignore multiple textual examples, like, oh, "frail nigga, I couldn't much work with my hands," or, you know, rapping over the FRIGGIN ANNIE SOUNDTRACK

Nas on 'Ether' is a straight-up homophobe, and little else. And you know what we'd call any white person who talked that way about Jay's lips.

Music business hate me cause the industry ain't make me
Hustlers and boosters embrace me and the music I be makin
I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollars
They criticized me for it yet they all yell "HOLLA!"
If skills sold, truth be told, I'd probably be
lyrically, Talib Kweli
Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense
But I did five mill' - I ain't been rhymin like Common since
When your cents got that much in common
And you been hustlin since, your inception
Fuck perception go with what makes sense
Since I know what I'm up against
We as rappers must decide what's most impor-tant
And I can't help the poor if I'm one of them
So I got rich and gave back, to me that's the win/win
So next time you see the homey and his rims spin
Just know my mind is workin just like them...

Me, I run the show, oh
And these kids
Don't like nobody comin' around here
Fuckin' with they dough for shit
You enterprisin' though, and I like it
But fuck with the big dogs yo, I gotta bite ya
Look, it's outta my hands
And you gettin money 'round here
Is not in the plans
Don't hop your ass outta that van
Head back to Kansas
I'm sending niggas back up in campuses
Chances slimmer than that chick in Calvin Klein pantses
Let me guess, they said it was money round here
And the rest is my stoppin' you from gettin' it, correct?
Sorry to here that
My guess is you got work at the hotel
I'll take care of that, you'll also see,
Now please, give me the room key
Ya twitchin', don't do that
Ya makin' me nervous, my crew
Well they do pack, them dudes in murderers
So please, would ya, put your hands back in sight
They don't like to see me nervous
You can understand that, right?
You draw, better be Picasso, you know the best
Cause if this is not so, uh, God bless
You leave me no choice
I leave you no voice
Believe you me son
I hate to do it just as bad as you hate to see it done
Now calm your boys
Cause I'm findin' it a little hard to concentrate with all the noise
Get the point
I'll let you go, before you leave
I guess I outta let you know
I need those keys
And a promise you neva, no matter the weather,

And niggas is praying to god so long that they Atheist
Where you can't put your vest away and say you'll wear it tomorrow
Cause the day after we'll be saying, damn I was just with him yesterday
I'm a block away from hell, not enough shots away from straight shells
An ounce away from a triple beam still using a hand-held weight scale
Your laughing, you know the place well
Where the Liquor Stores and the base well
And Government, fuck Government, niggas politic theyselves
Where we call the cops the A-Team
cause they hop out of vans and spray things
And life expectancy so low we making out wills at eight-teen
Where how you get rid of guys who step out of line, your rep solidifies
So tell me when I rap you think I give a fuck who criticize?
If the shit is lies, god strike me
And I got a question, are you forgiving guys who live just like me?
We'll never know
One day I pray to you and said if I ever blow, Let 'em know
the stakes and exactly what takes place in the ghetto
Promise fulfilled, but still I feel my job ain't done
Cough up a lung, where I'm from, Marcy son, ain't nothing nice
