Man I used to love Archers of Loaf so much. I need to replace my old cassettes, not sure I even know where they are anymore. I used to get made fun of relentlessly in my design studio class because I had an Archers of Loaf sticker on my parallel bar and people wrongly assumed I was a big America On Line supporter because of the 'AOL' logo.

Last time I saw the full line-up was like late 90's NYC and it was completely amazing. I think that At the Drive-In opened that show but I could be making that up because it seems sort of odd.

nah that would actually make total sense to me, at the drive in started on flipside, def a lot of peeps that loved archers liked the early ATDI stuff

Yeah, they toured a bit with ATDI. I specifically showed up late to one show to avoid them.

I saw them with Helium in Columbus and it was SO RAD. I have seen Crooked Fingers a bunch of times through the years too.

Just curious -- has anyone heard the film score he did for Ball of Wax? (full disclosure: i am involved with this, so i am just curious if anyone knows it exists -- also it is really good even if it does have a very early 00s feeling to it)

i saw them as the opening act for weezer (blue album era) and i HATED weezer at the time (they've grown on me a teeny bit) so we all peaced out after AOL was done.

they sound great, esp bachmann's voice. iirc his voice got worse and worse as the band went on (i tuned out after vee-vee)

song sounds totally different, but his voice does interesting things toward the end and you totally forget that it's just him and a guitar. great post-show noise at the end of the clip too.

the reason i went was actually for the support act, small 23, who i was vibed up on at the time (need to see if that album still hold up), but i seem to recall enjoying the AOL set as well.

EB has been being great for a looooong time. i really love crooked fingers and other stuff he's done over the years. even when he's kinda off ("call to love" is corny) he's great. sure, there were some mawkish lyrics here and there, but dude can write a song, and he always performs with heart. that's not easy to maintain for this long. he also tries out a lot of different directions and never gets too comfortable there. really every album has its own character.

I distinctly remember EB saying that he wasn't interested in reunion tours, that he has been making music all these years and fuiud but I guess lots of u d and now he might as well help ppl relive their 20s.

I saw Archers in 95 or so and CF/EB a bunch of times since then, but I feel like he's family* at this point and I got no problem seeing the old band again. I'm not delirious about it but glad they're finally getting a slice of 90s pie.

Q w/r/t original post: what is the state of dude's voice? I seem to remember even on the Vee-Vee tour it was shredded and he was taking creative steps to protect it in the more aggressive songs.

I saw crooked fingers maybe five years ago (matt came out and they played 3 AoL songs btw) and it seemed fine iirc.

Y'all who are ignoring the 10+ years of Crooked Fingers stuff based on a snap judgment you may have made 10+ years ago re: the state of Bachmann's voice are just missing out. It's not like he has a Pollard-like back catalogue to sift through. The covers EPs are great, Bring On the Snakes and Red Devil Dawn are great, Dignity and Shame...has its moments (some of which are great) and it's all worth a listen or six. The s/t CF is kind of unusual w/r/t the voice thing, but the songs themselves are beautiful. "Broken Man" is devastating. Also Barry Black and BOW score? Great!

Better than fine imo! Anyway, before you poop your pants about the reunion, give the rest a try. You can blame me if you find absolutely NOTHING to like in there.

There are some great Crooked Fingers songs but the "Neil Diamond sings Tom Waits" vibe is a bit much

Listening to the Icky Mettle reissue: I guess it's been remastered? I can't tell tbh. It doesn't sound any clearer or fuller, maybe just louder. And the 2nd disc just has the AOLvsGOAT ep and a few other things that were already on The Speed of Cattle. So yeah, unless you've been hunting a copy of Icky Mettle on vinyl for a few years w/o any success, this whole thing seems kind of superfluous.

After like a million years, I've finally come around (mostly) to White Trash Heroes.

I don't really see any great need for reissues, unless there's some weird trove of unreleased tracks that they're sitting on. Their live (on CD/LP/bootleg) stuff never seemed like any huge improvement over the original recordings, seems like the b-sides mostly got out already, and the quality of their CDs was never a problem.

I never posted about the show, but I have time now to say this: it was good. It was. I had fun and bounced around a lot. I saw a lot of men in their 30s. But honestly I missed the CF songs.

Outside of The Speed of Cattle, there are only four tracks (iirc) that are scattered:

I saw the Black Lips at a street fest in Chicago last Saturday.

How was it? The last time I saw them live was a while ago. Probably like 2008.

they were fine, I never paid em much heed before. Preferred them to Man or Atro-Man, who went on just before. (but was most relieved it wasn't 103 degrees anymore)

haha wow Man or Astro-Man are still around. now them I probably haven't seen play since 1996.

Archers were ok, but some of the "here's something from album 3" moments were weak, and the "here's something from album 4" moments even more so. They had to stop by 8, and when they went into "White Trash Heroes" with 4 minutes to go...well, it was a chance for the true fans to beat the crowds going home. Waved hi to morbz (who I believe also bailed during "WTH"). Dudes should have played "What Did You Expect?" or "Traffic"

Finally seeing them tonight (couldn't sort it out last year). FUCKIN STOKED

They were loose and jovial tonight, and played just about every song I wanted to or thought I might hear. Except Wrong! How you gonna make me wait 14 years since I last saw you and then not play Wrong?

I'm kidding. I'll get over it. Just slightly bummed.

Late night tv musical performances get scrubbed pretty fast just as a rule. Most things that happened four months ago are gone already.

Questlove said on twitter at one point that just about all musical performances are just uploaded for, like, a 2 week window, and then they disappear never to be seen again. Kinda sucks.

yeah, i knew better than to rely on the NBC site, but was hoping maybe it would be on YouTube.

one time i found Nirvana on SNL but the uploader had rotated the video like 45 degrees so as not to be caught by ... uh ... whatever technology they use to monitor stuff like that.

thought maybe we could work together to find Archers on Fallon under the name "How to poach the perfect egg" or something. :)

anyway, this is a rare band that was cool back in the day but, imo, sounds even better now. stoked to have 'em back.
