Which I am listening to right now. Holy fuck this is good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 November 2006 03:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, SERIOUSLY loud as hell -- Bardo Pond, Godflesh/Jesu levels of feedback and distortion, also weirdly pretty too...like a perfect puree of nearly everything one could love about loud evil guitar music at sludge tempos.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 November 2006 03:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I know this bands music quite well.

New album Idolum = heck yes.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 May 2008 22:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I got this in the mail, tried to listen to it in the car last night but decided that it wasn't exactly driving music. Sounded pretty cool, though.

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 17 May 2008 23:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Hahah, no, driving music it is not.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 May 2008 23:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Tis great music!

Anxiously awaiting this one!

liking this one more than Lucifer Songs so far.

rockapads, Sunday, 18 May 2008 01:44 (fifteen years ago) link

OK, I gave it a listen... sounded fine to me, but I'm not quite sure I see what's so transcendent about it. Could somebody please extrapolate on what makes this so special? (And that's not me being snotty, that's me being honestly curious)

Jeff Treppel, Sunday, 18 May 2008 01:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm with Jeff, here (though I haven't heard the new one: going on Godlike Snake and Lucifer Songs). Lots of the right moves and tones, but there's something missing, or something I'm not quite catching. Normally, I'm a sucker for the boiling psychedelic wormhole thing, but Ufomammut come across as more studied than transcendent. Like Yob, but nowhere near as good.

contenderizer, Sunday, 18 May 2008 18:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I don't really think "transcendence" is so much the game here as just some nice solid brick wall riffing, with some math-y psych-y elements. I shall definitely check out this Yob you speak of.

telepathy_rock!, Sunday, 18 May 2008 19:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I also just want to declare that this kind of music should ALWAYS be listened to on cranked speakers and NEVER on headphones. Honestly this didn't start to leave much of any impression until I listened to it on speakers.

telepathy_rock!, Sunday, 18 May 2008 19:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Shame the vinyl is so expensive on their label, im sure its worth it for the awesome artwork(i do have a morkobot vinyl), but 50 euros for 1 new lp is a bit much.

So these dudes are over here in a couple of days:

The Italian art collective MALLEUS, known worldwide for their striking poster designs and screen printing magic, will be returning to San Francisco this month alongside Alan Forbes, Firehouse (Chuck Sperry and Ron Dnovan) and countless more international artists, under the tour banner Dark Nouveau, a return to the roots of poster creation. Dark Nouveau evokes equally the fin de siècle style of Toulouse-Lautrec and 1960’s San Francisco Psychedelia. It operates as a manifesto of reinvention and revision, aimed at connecting to the poster movement of the Decadent Period to the Belle Epoque and folding it into the Psychedelic Period to the present modern global silkscreen movement. Dozens of other artists will be involved; see the full list of artists and full info on the festival here: http://www.malleusdelic.com/eng/home.html

Additionally, UFOMAMMUT - the oppressive, cerebral doom unit which contains several members of the MALLEUS Collective - will be playing their first American shows in October! Two California shows have been booked in conjunction with the Dark Nouveau art tour, in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

UFOMAMMUT - First US appearances!
10/16/2009 Nomad - Los Angeles, CA
10/24/2009 Varnish - San Francisco, CA

UFOMAMMUT will be returning to the US in May 2010 for the annual Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore.

I got Snailking a few weeks ago, and I'm in sludgy-love. Which record next?

bendy, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 08:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Lucifer Songs and Idolum are both quite good.

Ned, catch them live if you can - they can be quite good if in the right mood!

Marco Damiani, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 09:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm so jealous! I might have to go to Baltimore Death Fest next year just to see them. My favorite current metal band.

And I'll echo Marco's recommendations of Lucifer Songs and Idolum, but if you like those be prepared that you'll want everything else, including their album with Lento, Supernaturals Record One.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 13:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Lento are quite good too: more or less from the same "scene", there are also Edible Woman, who play this quirky, organ-led hardcore punk. Heavy but somehow poppy.

Marco Damiani, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 13:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Haven't heard of Edible Woman - will check out ASAP.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 13:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Their new album, recorded by Lorenzo from Lento, is their best: should be out in a couple of months. Less mathy, more spacey, with better songs, not afraid to sound poppier.

Marco Damiani, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 14:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Cool. I'll keep an eye out - the stuff on their MySpace page was interesting.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 14:55 (fourteen years ago) link

I've been a fan since the demo. Wish these shows hadn't been announced on such short notice. Gonna try to add them to Fall Into Darkness 10/29-31 in Portland if they're available...

This has been out since May 5 and no one's mentioned it?? I had to find out about it flipping through Decibel at Borders. Why isn't there more fanfare?

http://i46.tinypic.com/28tuvki.jpg

"“EVE” is the fifth album of Ufomammut. Recorded at Locomotore Studio in Roma by Lorenzo Stecconi (Soundlord on Idolum), “Eve” is a 45 minute long single track developing in 5 main movements. Passing through the massive atmospheres of Idolum and filtered by the mastodontic riffs of Snailking, “Eve” is a new step in the sonic adventure of Ufomammut, another level in the band's sound research. The album is a homage to Eve, the first Woman on Earth, and the rebellion to her creator for bringing knowledge to Mankind."

ImprovSpirit, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 15:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Amen. If they never disappoint, does that mean I should get Godlike Snake and Lucifer Songs? I have MP3s of Snailking, love it. Even though it's OOP on CD (available on double vinyl) and sells for $130 on up, I think I found a copy at HBDirect, which normally specializes in classical. Crossing my fingers that it's not a mistake and they really do have it. If anyone has lossless files of the totally unavailable Godlike Snake, PM me and I'll trade for it!

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 16:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Godlike Snake is the only one I haven't been able to find a physical copy of - I have some high quality mp3s, but it's not the same thing. If you like the other stuff definitely get Lucifer Songs, as it smokes too. The cd version I have came with a cool copy of of the video backgrounds they used on that tour - super trippy stuff like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSiXEbtLpeA

and get a copy of the collaboration with Lento. It's pretty amazing.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 17:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I found what I was looking for here -- Godlike Snake in lossless, supposedly a 2006 remaster, and other stuff... If any of you partake in the stuff that isn't OOP, at least buy the new one!

UFOMAMMUT: Supernatural Italian Doom Unit Sign With Neurot Recordings

It comes with absolute honor to finally announce the meeting of marvelous minds, as Italian masters of thunderous psychedelic doom UFOMAMMUT sign to Neurot Recordings for their next album. Their last album, Eve, was met with great critical acclaim worldwide, and judging by the studio updates we are receiving, their next opus will be even more epic in its proportions and probably their heaviest and most cacophonous record to date.

This is what Neurot owner Steve Von Till had to say about the signing: "Welcome UFOMAMMUT to the Neurot family. UFOMAMMUT is our kind of band. These sonic brothers from Italy are heavy, psychedelic, and driven. We couldn’t be happier than to have them working with Neurot Recordings for their next full-length album. Though we have been fans of their music for a while, being able to meet them and share the stage with them on our recent trip to Europe was awesome. We formed a great and meaningful bond, which of course is the most important aspect of what we do. We admire their prolific nature as visionary musicians, as members of the Malleus art collective, and as owners of their own label, Supernatural Cat. They truly embody the same spirit of music and art that we all strive for. UFOMAMMUT is in the studio at this very moment working on their next epic."

UFOMAMMUT also commented..."Working with Neurot signals an evolutionary change for UFOMAMMUT. In the last years we've built up our own music world, doing everything by ourselves, working on our own art and recordings, creating a label, and taking care of every aspect of our projects.

We feel very excited by this change because this confirms that we did a good job, especially coming from these guys who we have always considered a great inspiration.

We're sure this Neurot and UFOMAMMUT friendship will open new perspectives and directions in our sonic adventure, because we feel we have the same vision and attitude about what music should be. In few words we feel totally honored and proud to become a part of the Neurot Family."

This news really does mark the alliance of almighty talent and we hope that you will follow this story as it unfolds in the coming weeks, more news as and when we can bring it. In the meantime, European fans can catch UFOMAMMUT on tour beginning next week and into October.

Thewhole catalog is wicked. I'd rank the top three

1. Eve
2. Snailking
3. Idolum

bendy, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 12:49 (eleven years ago) link

I love Ufomammut so much I almost was gonna travel to Europe and see them at Hellfest in France. They'll probably come to the U.S. this fall though. They'd better!

I have three of their albums in my top 100 heavy rock list - http://www.fastnbulbous.com/best-heavy-rock.htm

Once the second installment of Oro comes out this fall, I'll judge both as one double album. Technically it's all supposed to be just one song!

The reactions I read to their performances at Roadburn and Desertfest Germany were so enthusiastic I almost considered dropping $1,600 for flight, ticket and other travel expenses to see them at Hellfest on June 16th with Unsane, YOB, The Devil's Blood and Saint Vitus. Go to Hellfest site, there are buses coming from pretty much everywhere in Europe for a good price.
