I think the guy who plays "Rufus" in R kelly's Trapped in the Closet video is very attractive. Does anyone know his real name?

is anyone else listening to Love Letter? right now i especially like the title track, Love Is (duet with K. Michelle), and radio message. there aren't a lot of classic r. kelly being r. kelly moments, but they're in here (e.g. the "a love letter christmas" remix)

/\/K/\/\, Thursday, 16 December 2010 03:26 (fifteen years ago)

little bit of talk in the R&B thread

dig the title track too, and "radio message" and "when a woman loves" and especially "number 1 hit". rest is kinda all over the place and not really feeling the couple throwback joints after "when a woman loves"

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 December 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

so he has a song called "number one hit" a year after he had a single called "number one"? it's starting to verge on sad given how long it's been since he had a song hit #1 on any chart anywhere.

this album is so great! title track is my favorite thing he's done in years. lots of these songs sound like they should be hit singles -- wonder if any of them will succeed, or are they too out of step with the times?

swvl, Friday, 24 December 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

too out of step methinks ;_;

the stretch from "taxi cab" --> "radio message" --> "when a woman loves" --> "love is" is just one of the best things i've heard all year, just absolutely stunning

I don't necessarily love this yet but I like it. have only had a few listens though. his voice sounds great, some of the material doesn't grab me as much as the rest. "Taxi Cab" is my favorite so far even if it is a bit incongruous with the rest.

O'Shea the Cubeman (San Te), Friday, 31 December 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

i like how "taxi cab" is one of the four or whatever mj tributes on the album but is secretly the best of them by avoiding the obvious/kinda played out off the wall/thriller moves and going for angsty bad-era balladry "dirty diana"-style

tears of a self-clowning oven (The Reverend), Friday, 31 December 2010 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

first half is great, (as said before obviously) 2nd half doesn't interest me at all. the MJ tributes are sweet, i think he sounds more like MJ than Jackson on that new fake album.

KELLY: Yeah, she had a suite and she just traveled. But one night she got on the piano and started to play and we sat and drank and talked. Her spirit was unbeliev able. White lady. I need to read his new memoir:

"As the film credits started to roll, I couldn't move. I burst into tears. People walking past me patted me on the back, trying to console me. 'The Notebook' was beautiful, and I was crying because its hero and heroine had died together.

But I was also crying because I remembered a Valentine's Day -- when a helicopter dropped a rainfall of roses -- that had come and gone ... My marriage had died. And there was nothing I could do to bring it back."

A rainfall of roses!

Given that a lot of people believe that the video shows you, some of the behaviors on the video have become associated with you, particularly urination as part of sex. Pissing on people. You must have seen that Dave Chappelle skit.
“No, I haven't.”

He did several clips on his show.
“David Chappelle? [as though trying to place the name] David Chappelle? I don't…”

Chappelle's Show. Very famous.
“Okay…comedian?”

Really famous comedian.
“Okay, a comedian. Okay…go on.”

And acting as you, he did a parody of “Ignition (Remix)” called “Piss on You.”
“Mmmm.”

Likewise Macklemore mentioned it in his first big hit. [“Thrift Shop” includes the lyric Probably shoulda washed this, smells like R. Kelly's sheets…pissssss.] This has become part of popular culture.
“Whole lot of things become popular culture.”

But this is your name.
“Especially when it comes to a comedian, man. First of all, I have no respect for a comedian when it comes to being serious. If you get that. That's a joke.”

But this is your name and your reputation—pull up any YouTube video of yours and read the comments underneath, and pretty quickly there'll be a comment relating to this.
“Mmmm. Okay. Of course it is.”

Well, to ask the embarrassing question—to give you a chance to clarify something—and this wouldn't be illegal, but is that something you like as part of sex?
“Absolutely not.”

frogbs, Friday, 22 January 2016 14:18 (ten years ago)

“Well, my opinion on that is, I don't know what happened. I'm a fan of Bill Cosby's from the Bill Cosby show, of course—who's not?—and for me to give my opinion on something that I have no idea if it's true or not, all I can say is that it was a long time ago. And when I look on TV and I see the 70-, 80-, 90-year-old ladies talking about what happened when they were 17, 18, or 19, there's something strange about it. That's my opinion. It's just strange.”

Although if—
“[interrupts] It's strange. Strange is strange. I can't explain strange. That's why strange is strange. Because it's something we can't explain.”

But don't you think that if they're telling the truth, it doesn't matter how long ago it was?
“If God showed me that they were telling the truth, I would say that's wrong. I don't care if it was a zillion years ago. But God would have to do that, because God is the only one can show me that. No man can tell me that. No woman can tell me that. And when you wait 70 years, 50 years, 40 years, to say something that simple, it's strange. You know why I say that is because it happened to me, and it wasn't true.”

niels, Friday, 22 January 2016 16:21 (ten years ago)

70-, 80-, 90-year-old ladies talking about what happened when they were 17, 18, or 19, there's something strange about it.

Yeah, R. Kelly wishes a whole lot of people can't remember what happened to them when they were 17. Or 16. Or 15.

also i think ilx as a whole really needs to do a mea culpa for how much we used to clown on dero, like okay is he a corny critic, sure, but stuff like this he's doing is real reportage and real journalism and worth more than a boatload of record review, he's really stuck to this story when no one else would and the industry obviously would prefer to forget these children.

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 17 July 2017 14:28 (eight years ago)

Seriously. Hopper, for all her work, got far more credit than she deserved for that VV piece, which really in the end just amplified DeRo's voice/reporting. Jim's always done real reporting, though, and done a good job with it, but he's also done and said a lot of silly stuff, which can get in the way.

He can stand by his aesthetic takes and I can happily rubbish them, not that he would need to bother or care what anyone else thinks to start with. I will also gladly distinguish between opinions over said musical aesthetics and, per your note, actual reporting. On that front he has clearly done the work.

yeesh, sterling being a super fucking creep. is he still lingering around ILX or is he in prison now

akm, Monday, 17 July 2017 22:15 (eight years ago)

sterling also wrote a piece for the village voice where he dismissively compared the case against kelly to ken starr going after bill clinton

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 17 July 2017 22:17 (eight years ago)

the way ilxor was a safe space for old dudes to talk about young women on those teen pop threads was always so fucking creepy to me

kurt schwitterz, Monday, 17 July 2017 22:25 (eight years ago)

sterling isn't that old, he was at Cal the same time I was if not slightly later...oh maybe I am old. anyway it doesn't make him not a creep.

akm, Monday, 17 July 2017 22:41 (eight years ago)

Sterl is a pretty sharp guy about a lot of other things on ILX and still posts occasionally. I would assume he's fully ashamed of his R Kelly defenses? He never struck me as creepy whenever I ran into him in person.

El Tomboto, Monday, 17 July 2017 23:07 (eight years ago)

Slate interview with DeRogatis. Here's the crucial quote, for me:

How long did you work on the story?
Nine months. It came to me in early November.

What was the reporting process like? Was most of that time spent trying to get people to talk?
Most of that time was spent, post–Hulk Hogan and Gawker, finding a media outlet that was willing to run it. I’ve been working with BuzzFeed since Wednesday afternoon, and those were 12-plus–hour days every single day until this morning.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 19 July 2017 11:22 (eight years ago)

Yeah, that's pretty telling.

Sterl's position appears to be that consent laws are arbitrary when it comes to age

This underage sex cult news has been around for years btw... Back in 2013 there was an article on villagevoice of how R Kelly had a large amount of civil and criminal lawsuits that have been filed by girls aged 13-16 that he has been acquitted for by the justice system or settled out of court for (presumably) large sums of money and how allegedly Kelly had the girls recruit other girls their age (13-16) and had sex with many of them. Sad it took so many years to confirm the story.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 19 July 2017 20:42 (eight years ago)

today on Facebook R Kelly (or at least, his team) shared an interesting picture of him with Nelson Mandela comparing their struggles through adversity

the first 2 sentences of the response (from kelly's management):

Kelly supports the pro-women goals of the Time’s Up movement. We understand criticizing a famous artist is a good way to draw attention to those goals—and in this case, it is unjust and off-target.
