Animal Collective - Feels

Feels has leaked. It's much more focused, but...

Why I find Animal Collective so exciting: Grass. It's fast, exciting, alive.
Why I find Animal Collective so irritating: Bees. It's sloooow and long and booooring.

pinder (pinder), Friday, 12 August 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

"grass" is the only one I like. It's fantastic though.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 12 August 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

banshee beat is the best song they've written.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 12 August 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

yeesh. i can't imagine thinking the slower songs on Feels are "sloooow and long and booooring". especially when compared to, say, Campfire Songs, and even then the slow long boringness of the songs are completely to their credit.

lemin (lemin), Friday, 12 August 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Only heard it once, standouts: "Grass", "The Purple Bottle" and "Banshee Beat". Esp. the last two are really tapping straight into my melancholy lobe.

willem (willem), Friday, 12 August 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

Loch Ravin is pretty great ... it's got that awesome "Footprints In Snow" ringing sound in the background - anyone know of any other songs that use that?

lemin (lemin), Friday, 12 August 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

I can't find this on slsk :-(

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

not even if you search the ILM-room?

willem (willem), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

i think slsk is broken on my pc cos i can only see like, four people in the ilm room.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

upgrade, maybe?

willem (willem), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

i love the first track as well. gorgeous melodies

rizzx (Rizz), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

The first half is bonkerz!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

Feels is absolutely great, can't.stop.listening. I especially like how it's really supposed to be a vinyl-album: the fast-paced bizarropsych on 'side a', the slow-paced dreamy songs are on 'side b'. Esp. Purple Bottle, Bees and Banshee Beat are SO fine.

Gerard (Gerard), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

doglatin yr using the 'new' server, 1.57. hardly anyone's switched over yet. you need to dl 1.56.

a, Friday, 12 August 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

how do you get to the ilm room on soulseek?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 12 August 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

right-click on the rooms list and press "Refresh" - it should be on there and it's simply

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 12 August 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

...called "ILM".

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 12 August 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Thanks! In there now.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 12 August 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

"banshee beat" is really fucking great.

jermaine (jnoble), Saturday, 13 August 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

The 1st track is my favourite too. But I like the whole album.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 13 August 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

this album is much better than sung tongs, and that says alot since sung tongs was an amazing album!

Lovelace (Lovelace), Saturday, 13 August 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

OK, Animal Collective! You've blown my mind again! Thanks.

marybeth, Saturday, 13 August 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

i must say, i miss the acoustic guitars. they were one of my fav acoustic guitar acts. still, i like how theyve evolved into more of a conventional rock band but still they're NOT a conventional rock band at all.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Saturday, 13 August 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

the first song sonds like a wussy arcade fire fronted by Tom Barman of dEUS. I mean this in the best way possible.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Saturday, 13 August 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

After seeing them perform this several times on tour, this is about what I expected it to sound like....its lacking the transcendent melodies of, say, "Leaf House" or "Winter's Love"...still, another positive evolution..but its no Sung Tongs

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Sunday, 14 August 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

the first song sonds like a wussy arcade fire fronted by Tom Barman of dEUS. I mean this in the best way possible.

fuck, this album's been sat in my "to listen to at some point possibly" pile for over a month, but that makes me want to stick it on RIGHT NOW!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 14 August 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty good. I don't like any of the songs as much as "Essplode," "Penny Dreadfuls," or "Who Could Win A Rabbit," but I appreciate the consistency of quality. There's a couple duds maybe but it's mostly good stuff.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 14 August 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

'rabbit' is my least favourite AC thing ever. including all their utra-noodly boring quasi-ambient nothingness.

jermaine (jnoble), Sunday, 14 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

i think this is easily the best thing they've done since spirit (discounting the panda bear lp) (and i liked/loved a lot of the stuff inbetween) (though i did not like sung tongs).

strng hlkngtn, Sunday, 14 August 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I love it all. Spirit to Sung Tongs. They're all brilliant. Genius even.
I'll drink from the Purple Bottle any day any time. I just hope they keep on making music until I move on into the next world.

marybeth, Monday, 15 August 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

They were never an "acoustic act", ever. They recorded a few things that were acoustic. They started out like this, it's not new.

Amazing album, by the way.

seahorse genius (seahorse genius), Monday, 15 August 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

you know what? you can even dance to this shit, shit. that's huge

rizzx (Rizz), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

It's true though, this record does bring them full circle to Spirit They're Gone, which I suspect will always be my favorite Animal Collective record.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

"They were never an "acoustic act", ever. They recorded a few things that were acoustic. They started out like this, it's not new."

i wasn't trying to pigeonhole them, im just saying their acoustic guitars have always sounded fantastic. Campfire Songs is still my favorite AC album and a big part of the reason why i loved Sung Tongs so much is that the crisp acoustic guitars made the album feel so autumnal.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Monday, 15 August 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I just got "Turning Into Something" via the YSI link, loved it, realized I saw them play it a couple months ago, and now crave to hear "Banshee Beat" and the rest of the album WITH A PAIN.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

All this talk has me very very excited about Feels.....the best moment of Sung Tongs were as good as you can get.

PB, Monday, 15 August 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

this album is gorgeous. PB and Nick, you wont be dissapointed.

jmeister (jmeister), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Can anybody post a track list?

Max Gulker, Monday, 15 August 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Did You See The Words
Grass
Flesh Canoe
The Purple Bottle
Bees
Banshee Beat
Daffy Duck
Loch Raven
Turn Into Something

Fetchboy (Felcher), Monday, 15 August 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

:-) this is great. 'Grass' is gorgeously giddy.

stevo (stevo), Monday, 15 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

i am quite amazed with AC. they never get old

Just downloaded and listening.

First track is absolutely gorgeous.

PB, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

wait till the second.

acidmouth (acidmouth), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

The album is great, but I think I prefer the way they perform these songs live. Same with Sung Tongs (with the exception of "Winters Love.")

Also, where is Sleeper Factory?

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

(by the way, how does one search for files and dowload them within the ILM room on soulseek?)

PB, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

PB,
right click and the option will appear in a sub-menu

jmeister (jmeister), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

pastoral and gorgeous... until they start singing like ween.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

Beautiful, everything about it. The fast songs are delirious, the slow songs are gorgeous. "Banshee Beat" alone exceeds any expectations I had.

I never liked their early stuff before Sung Tongs, and I didn't think they could top that one. But goddamn, this is a remarkable record. Really blowing me out of the water at the moment.

PB, Friday, 19 August 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

sleeper factory is on campfire songs, dude.

b8a, Friday, 19 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

is it a hidden track or something? I only have it on a live recording coupled with "Doggy"...my Campfire Songs has 5 songs, no Sleeper Factory

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

But goddamn, this is a remarkable record. Really blowing me out of the water at the moment.

amen, i can't see anyone topping this this year, AC = Beach Boys of 2005 but BETTER

rizzx (Rizz), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I realized the other day that this record sometimes surprises me by reminding me of the first two Mercury Rev records!

And then I like it quite a bit.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine mentioned the Mercury Rev comparison to me. The first track (Did You See The Words) on "Feels" sounds very similar to the first track (Swans) on the upcoming Islands album...

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I third the Mercury Rev comparison, it does remind me of 'Yerself is Steam'. Also elements of the Beach Boys in the vocal harmonies?

stevo (stevo), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

sleeper factory is not on campfire songs...it's just on that breezeblock recording, with "doggy", which is on campfire songs.
it won't be on any albums, i don't believe.

naturemorte, Friday, 19 August 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

A good friend with a long Mercury Rev history also mentioned that to me first thing, though I hadn't thought of it.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I love Bees! And I love the wacky monster noises they make. Unless those are supposed to be fairies or nature talking or something.

[email protected], Friday, 19 August 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

its all about "turn into something"

noizem duke (noize duke), Friday, 19 August 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

they are getting more and more consistent. i was afraid anything wasnt going to top sung tongs, this makes me hopefull. they had better keep em coming, no one else is.

big fucking trees (big fucking trees), Saturday, 20 August 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

"Grass" has got to be one of the more astounding songs I've heard in a while. Like some of the best tracks on Sung Tongs, it seems to distill all that is exhilarating about music to an essence, but "Grass" even goes a bit further. Amazing.

Oh, and unlike other AC stuff, I want to see the lyrics to this BAD. Genius.

PB, Sunday, 21 August 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I agree with you PB. Dying to see the lyrics. Can figure out about a 10th of what they're saying and I still belt it out. Genius indeed. Who would've imagined that they could keep getting better. And best album cover of the year as well. Genius.

gerardmonchichi, Monday, 22 August 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

Where'd you see the cover? I'd love to take a look...

PB, Monday, 22 August 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

well let's quit fuckin around and give these lyrics a crack. maybe tougher than disco inferno? separate thread? ah, fuck it, what better place than here?

here is a mess of an attempt at did you see the words (it's pretty decipherable right up until the line about eldery couples):

DID YOU SEE THE WORDS
have you see the words cut? open
your poor intestine can’t deny
incu-periods? drip from your mailbox
and blood flies? dip and dive
reach down in-siiii-ide
there’s something living in these lies

and when your newest kisser is peakin
you dress yourself up to not
get tangled up in arms and legs it’s hard to bend?
someone grabs a hold til you go oh-ohhh-oh
there’s something starting don’t know why?

in a house so cozy words are spoken
not to take our shoes off and unwind
and there’s minuets off in the background
drowning out ?????????? I’ll test the kiss goodni-iiiiii-ight
don’t keep my loving on my mind

cause it’s messy yes this mess is mine
my mind is messy yours is maybe not?

look at her similar ?????
look at her similar ?????

do the elderly couples still kiss and hug and
gradually ????????????????????????/
??????????????????????????????????
(holy shit i have no idea)

did you see the words you wrote
give me? everything?
and babies and? the hospital?
????????????????????????
kiss the few? ????? his shoes are haunted
show is ????

jared55, Monday, 22 August 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Woah! It looks like some book that would have belonged to my Aunt when she was a kid that I'd have found in a cupboard in my Gran's house in the South of France - that's got to be one of the best album covers I've ever seen!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Henry Darger to thread! Seriously, though, I love that that "Turn Into Something" song has a full-on country change in it. Can't wait to hear the rest of the record for the yodelling that Avey Tare was doing quite a bit when I saw them play last...

Craig D., Tuesday, 23 August 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Is this sounding like early Mercury Rev to anybody else?
Their best to date by the way. So good at points that it makes me need a wee.

feedle, Thursday, 25 August 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

whats a wee? I d agree its their best too. This album sounds a little more meticulously made and professional though. Like they are aware that a decent amount of people are paying attention to their music. To me their naive-hippy-chant vibe is gone and now musicians are trying to recreate something similar. It may not sound as authentic to me in that particular way but the songs are fabulous and their isnt one dud. It flows great as well and the last track is perfect.

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 25 August 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

whats a wee?

a piss

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 August 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

ahhh. I see now.

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 25 August 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Hi Feedle, what you doing here?

Sorry, right now I still prefer Sung Tongs. This is great, but for me I find all the tracks sound really similar - it's just a noise, albeit a nice noise.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 25 August 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

jmeister wrote,
"This album sounds a little more meticulously made and professional though. Like they are aware that a decent amount of people are paying attention to their music."

I agree. Sounds like they want new fans, maybe. I like the production, though I would have preferred the record if it were weirder, spacier.
Oh, by the way, I'm convinced that "The Purple Bottle" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard.

Salvador (Salvador), Friday, 26 August 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

"Bees" has that (very pretty) slightly out of tune guitar sound that I like in Cat Power's "Sea of Love" cover. But this song is so drawn out and nothing ever really happens.

Salvador (Salvador), Friday, 26 August 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

To me their naive-hippy-chant vibe is gone

this is a good thing imo

amon (eman), Friday, 26 August 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone else shy away from the first couple of tracks on first listen?

I was a little put off, and then by the middle of the album, I was captivated. I'm pretty confident this will surpass Sung Tongs in the very near future.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 26 August 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone else shy away from the first couple of tracks on first listen?

No. Because they're amazing and the best songs on the record.

PB, Friday, 26 August 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I did. And still do. I prefer the middle and end of the album.

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Friday, 26 August 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I agree with Recovering.

The first two or three songs aren't up to snuff. Could also be a sequencing issue. Either way, I was prepared to dismiss the album based on how it kicked off.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 26 August 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I agree with Recovering.

Yeah, we know. He was agreeing with you.

I think the first two songs are astounding, with only "Banshee Beat" coming close on this album.

But that's just my take on things....

PB, Friday, 26 August 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

my first considered impression here is that i really miss the production style of sung tongs. everything on ST was a little mossier and mumblier than on feels, where everything is a little too clearly articulated. im no audiophobe, but the cleaner production makes feels a little colder than ST. also, the comparison to a "jammy" aesthetic seems more apt on this one than previous. i mean, i feel like there can be a thin line sometimes between drone and jam, and that AC has taken a step over that line here, for better or for worse.

that said, ST took a LONG time to sink in fully, so im sure my attitude will change somehow as time passes.

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

PB:
If I were to adopt your chatboard social graces, I would point out that we already knew your take on things, but I'm not going to do that.

Considering I didn't like Sung Tongs AT ALL when I first heard it, I should be cautious about making statements on Feels.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Album of the year hands down. I've been listening to it constantly - and that's without my headphones or the stereo on. It just keeps playing in my head. It's beautiful and majestic and stunning. Wow. I haven't heard anything this moving since the first time I heard the ocean. Thank you AC please keep making music.

marybeth, Saturday, 27 August 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Hey? Where's Momus? What do you think? LOL

Momus seems to appear quite frequently when marybeth tosses out her fluffy opinion.

Marybeth is right on one point. Feels washes over me. I love this one for its intense peacefulness. Makes me damn glad to be human.

Gerardmonchichi, Saturday, 27 August 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Um. OK. I'm not senor momus. I am Marybeth great strong... and single. (ahem fellow ILMers...)
Anyway, loch haven is mesmerizing. I cant help but think that AC are one of the few timeless bands recording today. 100 years down the pipe people will still be listeining to this one, Feels. (And also the new Deerhoof, the Runners Four (holy concept album!) and the new Black Dice, Broken Ear Record (holy holy!). Best recordings of their respective careers.)

marybeth, Saturday, 27 August 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

loch raven is a really nice park/lake/dam just north of baltimore, about 15 min. drive from downtown.

also noteworthy, loch raven appears in a bluebook record, although slightly misspelled:
LOCK RAVEN DAM
10/27/58
(Bluebook)
10:30 p.m. Witnesses: Phillip Small, Alvin Cohen. One large, flat egg-shaped object affected a car's electrical system and caused a burning sensation on one of its occupants. Sighting lasted 1 minute.

amon (eman), Saturday, 27 August 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

pete smith you are effing crazy. this album is way muddier and is a lot less "clearly articulated" than ST.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Saturday, 27 August 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Damn Fetchboy! It's the spectral influence of the glorious Sun City Girls!!!!
And granted AC have become the masters... OH AC you are the best. Said swooningly.

marybeth, Saturday, 27 August 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

Fellow ILMers...
If I could have a cartwheeling yellow person, flipping her flips across this damn screen i would do so to draw your attention to the new AC. I have no shame. I luv all four of them damn handsome boys. And their music knocks my socks off.

marybeth, Saturday, 27 August 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Salvador (Salvador), Saturday, 27 August 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

THE LOCH RAVEN DAM CASE, 1958:

The case is best introduced by its witnesses:

"Shortly after you pass the dam ... the bridge looms up in front of you at 200 to 250 yards away. ... We saw from that distance what happened to be a large, flat sort of egg-shaped object hanging between 100 to 150 feet off the top of the superstructure of the bridge over the lake."

"We slowed and decided to go closer and investigate the object... When we got to within 80 feet of the bridge, the car went completely dead on us. It seemed as though the electrical system was affected: the dash lights went out, the headlights went out, the motor went dead. Mr S., who was driving the car, put on his brakes [after the motor went dead], turned the ignition once or twice. We did not get any whirring sound; we were pretty frightened at that point. ... We watched it ... for approximately 30 to 45 seconds and then, I am not sure of the sequence of events here, it seemed to flash a brilliant flash of white light, and we both felt heat on our faces. Concurrently there was a loud noise, which I interpreted as a dull explosion. ... Then very quickly, ... the object started to rise vertically. It didn't change its position [aspect], as far as we could tell, during the rising."
"The only different feature it had while it was moving was that it was very bright and the age became diffused so that we couldn't make out the shape as it rose. It took from five to ten seconds to disappear from view completely. We were very frightened."

"...We got back to a phone booth in approximately 15 minutes. We proceeded to call the Ground Observer Corps, with no result. Our story elicited only complete disbelief."
At the Loch Raven Dam, Maryland, USA, on October 26, 1958, at 23:30 EST, two men, Philip Small and Alvin Cohen, saw an egg-shaped object hovering over the reservoir. It was 100 feet long and 125 feet in altitude and glowed white. The car power and engine failed when they approached at 200 to 300 feet from the object. The object emitted a flash. It then shot straight up with a loud noise and heat. The witnesses later reported their skin was reddened on the side facing the object.

US Air Force Project Blue Book summary of the case:

Oct. 26, 1958
2230

U.S., Loch Raven Dam Maryland: Two young men observed an egg-shaped object hovering above Bridge No. 1 over the reservoir. It was 100 feet long, 125 feet in altitude, and glowing a dim white. Their car went dead 75 to 80 feet from the bridge, or about 200 to 300 feet from the UFO. After leaving the car and watching for another 45 seconds, they saw the UFO flash brilliantly white, shoot straight up, and disappear from view in 5 to 10 seconds. There was a loud noise as the object left, as well as an increased sensation of heat. The witnesses later noticed that their skin had been reddened on the side facing the object.

The case is filed as "unknown" by the US Air Force's project Blue Book.

Skeptics comments:

I have been unable to find any comment in the skeptics literature I am aware of. The only mention of the case I found is in the German "CENAP Report" number 1, written by Werner Walter, the active member of CENAP who enjoys to fly balloons to demonstrate that UFO witnesses are unable to distinguish them from extraterrestrial machines. He does not mention any car problem, nor any details, only that the two witnesses say that they have been sunburnt by a UFO. The only comment offered is that "cases with physical effects are very rare" and that "Jacques Vallée had to dig out an old case." No evaluation of explanation or suggestion is made about the case itself.

Discussion:

The halt of the car's motor was not a stall of the motor caused by an error of the driver. Car motors do stall, but here we have a disappearance of the electricity in the electrical system; which is quite different from a motor stall. We also have a reappearance of the electricity, after which the witnesses could use the car again as if it had healed itself. This is not usual; when a car has an ordinary electrical or motor problem, it does not usually repair itself a moment later.

Of course if that was an isolated incident, one may imagine that there was a loose cable in the car, which caused a loss of contact by mere coincidence when the UFO was approached, and fell back in place also by mere coincidence when the UFO departed.

The car's problem is coincidental with the UFO observation. This may be interpreted as simple hazard; however, this is not an isolated case of that sort. This happens during numerous similar UFO observation when witnesses are driving in an otherwise perfectly functioning car. In those other cases, the event is almost always also primarily a disappearance of the electricity and a reappearance of it, and this begins generally between the moment when the driving witnesses approach the UFO and the electricity generally comes back when the UFO goes away.

If this was all a stunning series of coincidences, other types of coincidences would be noticeable. There is no sensible reason to imagine that one particular type of coincidence should occur so often, while none of the other possible coincidence occurs with any significant frequence in this type of sightings. For example, a tire may explode. It would be a coincidence if a tire exploded when the UFO is approached by the car in this particular case. But if, in many cases, tires do not generally explode, but electricity generally disappears, it becomes irrational to deny that the disappearing electricity is a consequence of the presence of the UFO.

Because the UFO is generally luminous, or emits light, there is reason to thing that it all has something to do with electromagnetism. Thunder and plasma are natural events which have also something to do with electricity. However, plasma and thunder occur during particular weather conditions, and do not have any resemblance nor in duration neither in behaviour with the observation described here. Moreover, I have been unable to find any instance in which a car lost its power in association with the presence of plasma ball.

i don't even know what their song is about as i have not heard it. i just like ufos

This has really, really grown on me. Great stuff.. the Mercury Rev comparison is OTM. "Bees" is stunning. On the fisrt few listens it really just sounded like a jumbled mess to me, but it's really revealed itself.

Holy mo fo. What the uck. This dl is the bomb. Where have you been all my life?!? Wondering how this will blow up. Blow up our pathetic universe AC! you are album of the year without a doubt.

gerard cosl, Thursday, 1 September 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm still unsure. I quite like Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev but I'm not entirely I want Animal Collective to sound like them... There are a lot of great tracks on here but a lot of them are buried under, well... just a kind of hubbub of sound and this makes all the tracks very uniform in texture. This might be the point of the whole thing but frankly I still prefer the hippie chant stuff on Sung Tongs. That said, eventhat album took ages (like nearly a year) to sink in properly and now it's one of my favourite records of the decade.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 1 September 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

sung tongs is better, no doubt (I also prefer Campfire Songs and Panda Bear's album)...for whatever reason, this seems to be the album where people finally "get" them, it's more "fun" maybe, or just less meandering....but the blissfull high points of sung tongs far outweigh the playfullness of Feels, IMO

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Thursday, 1 September 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

I've completely changed my mind about this album. I love all of it -especially the first few songs. I love "Grass", "The Purple Bottle", "Banshee Beat", and "Loch Raven" the most. The only song that kind of bores me is "Daffy Duck".

This album just took awhile to sink in. Now I can't stop listening to it.

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

not even banshee beat, cozen?

jermaine (jnoble), Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I think it has some of the best pop stuff they've ever done. Addictive beats as well.

j. rosenberg (pukeandburn), Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

I was drunk when I wrote that, jermaine : /

listening to banshee beat now I quite like it

I prefer AC when they're a bit more solid and noisy

when they go sleepy and drifty I go sleepy and drifty

actually this banshee beat is pretty good!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I still prefer the hippie chant stuff on Sung Tongs.

i don't hear that record as anything close to hippie chants. are you sure you don't mean one of their earlier ones?

amon (eman), Thursday, 1 September 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Sung Tongs is full of kind of chanting and bongos and acoustic guitar.

Anyone else think Feels sounds like an alternate soundtrack to The Lion King?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

A lot of it gives me a weird kind of summer camp jamboree vibe. Especially "The Purple Bottle". I find it to be a really sunny album for the most part. I found some of their older stuff to be a bit eerie, and I think that missing element was why I didn't like "Feels" at first.

And I have to wonder if the Lion King parallel has more to do with similarities between some of their non-lyrical vocals to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". I think the "Prospect Hummer" EP reminds me more of that, though.

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

There is definitely a very sunny, jaunty quality to this album. It's like little kids playing at guerilla survivalism on the sunniest, breeziest day of the year.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm still getting over how good the song Prospect Hummer is to properly get into the meat of this album yet I think. Probably my song of the year.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm a rabid fanboy, and this is easily their best (even if "Spirit ..." is my favourite, but I have feeling that it could change soon ... )

Keyin, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

The B-side Fickle Cycle from the Grass EP is pretty damn good too. another of the hippy-chant vibe songs.

pinder (pinder), Monday, 12 September 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

Is the Grass ep out? Shit, I want to hear the hippy-chant tune. Is it like "Baby Day"? I loved that one.

Albums of my year:
Animal Collective Feels
Deerhoof The Runners Four.
I think we can place both into the album hall of fame. They both work on so many levels, and, more importantly, I can't stop singing and dancing and hitting the repeat button.

it's a good record. almost surprisingly so.

knife (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

haha I hadn't read this thread before writing a review of the album, but the very first post basically says what I said, except Pinder said it better and in way fewer words.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Feels >>>> Sung Tongs

However, I'm still waiting for an AC album with eight two-minute pop songs and two twelve-minute jam/drone pieces. Almost every track on the album seems to average the two extremes beautifully.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I like it, I think. It's odd how it's simultaneously moving towards a more "normal" direction and a weirder direction, but not on the same songs: the first two songs and the last song sound like AC playing indie pop songs, but the chunk in the middle sound like a spacier, less structured AC, more like Here Comes the Indian.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

n/a is right, but sung tongs is WAY better because it all sounds exactly the same. for both recent albums, the first two songs are the poppiest, most accessible songs on the album, but ST just sounds so much more focused to me. i still just cant get a handle on feels yet. that said, "bees" is totally unfuckwithable (and incidentally sounds more like ST than most of feels).

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

sounds more like ST than most of feels

Which is why it bores me, I guess...

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

ST is riiiich and deeeeeep though - dont you people care about riiiiichness or deeeeeeeepth???

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

i love feels without reservation. "banshee beat," people!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)

ST is also sunshine and summer, where this record feels cloudy and autumn. The more I listen to Feels, the more disappointed I am. It almost doesn't sound like the same people, despite the fact that all the voices and bizarre, muddied noises are clearly from the same people. I can't for the life of me imagine preferring "Did You See the Words" to "Leaf House". "Leaf House" is like a deep smile put to music. It's inspiring. Feels just makes me regret things.

and besides, Feels sounds like a real backtrack as far as production goes, everything is less clear, less...explosive!

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

ST feels more autumnal to me, I think it's all the acoustic guitar. Feels is more wintery.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

getting colder tho

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

"Grass" is very spring-y. It's even called "Grass."

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Never much cared for AC. Heard Sung Tongs a couple of times and couldn't get into it. Bought Feels on a whim and have been very pleased after just a few listens.

Dan Floss (Dan Floss), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Saw them tonight on NY Noise. They suck. The whole NY Noise show sucked. The guy from Ariel Pink looks like Andrew I noticed.

Zepp Floyd, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

I've gotta say Feels is growing on me a lot - there aren't many bad tracks on it at all. Still, I'm gonna say Sung Tongs will probably always be my favourite. Something about Feels just makes AC sound all the more like human beings and in a strange way reveals a lot of flaws. With ST, you really were given the impression that the band was made up of mutants from an isolated peninsula on the other side of the world, singing in some kind of pidgen English and playing the kind of music that they'd grown up with all their lives in an outback bush somewhere. Feels is a great alternative American album but doesn't quite capture the otherworldly semi-logic of ST.

2005: Everyone is Human After All?

Beta (abeta), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

whereas i ultimately found ST to be front-loaded (and i concur with dave's assessment that the album was a tad 'goofy') Feels has a real emotional weight to it. and the back-half, while incredibly slooooow, is just stunning.

Beta (abeta), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Saw them tonight on NY Noise. They suck.

they were fucking terrible the one time I saw them live as well. I just don't think they work live, or whatever it is they do live, I don't like it. the records are great though!

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I thought they were great live -- but it sounds like it varies a lot from tour to tour.

I would like to suck on some recording.

Does anybody have extra?

i agree. lately when i put it on it's quite enjoyable

held tony (held tony), Thursday, 20 July 2006 06:13 (nineteen years ago)

It's pretty interesting that Scott Colburn, who engineered "Feels", is now recording the next Arcade Fire record, given that "Feels" had a bit of an affinity with that band on certain songs (esp. how the piano was used, to my ears), even though AC hadn't heard AF while making it...

Craig Dunsmuir (Craig D.), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Aditya (dan138zig), Friday, 21 July 2006 06:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, this record kind of blows, quite honestly. The live shows in Spring 05 were...well...I would say really fucking great. The album's production and compression are awful, and the overall feel of the songs is thus diminished. But the live sets? They are so so good.

my favourite of their albums

still haven't totally gotten over feeling slightly irked by long indie songs, but these songs are compelling and ambient. i keep going back to this album over all the others, and actually prefer that gentler, more restrained side to their music than the racier stuff...

Oh twisted me I came to eat at the hall where we danced to some duds
My crowd of pals observed my fingers and prayed for the lunch I had hung
And cheers rolled out and I thought early of tunas in tennisons tubs.

That should turn into something
You should turn into something

Oh blissful bleed I came out peaking and leaked out like a wet clown
My tears rolled down and arms went round at night I gapped at her gowns
So often green but she held me my curtains were covered in hounds

She Said

Mom "Oh my sweet goodness wish you could be here every time"
Mom " But don't miss me goodness because I rub away every time"
Baby "Then groan at the goodness but do you mean not every time?"
Baby "Then gone in the goodness wish I could stay here every time"

A mistful meet with teachers speaking there muffled by buzzes and hums
So headphone tones do float me home my chair was begging to come
And I'm not bummed some works not fun then we crawl in the carpet like bugs

Unrestful eve i sipped on leaks and sat in the room had a grudge
The jumping dust made catfish bust from corners now dripping with mud
And she knocked twice and we got silly and noone knew what would come..

She said

Lover "Oh my sweet goodness wish you could be here every time"
Lover "But don't miss me goodness because I rub away every time"
Other lover "Then groan at the goodness but do you mean not every time"
Other lover "Then gone in the goodness wish I could stay here every time"

But you'll turn into something
You should turn into something

Still my favourite album of the oughts. :D

EDB, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

three years pass...

still one of the most profoundly & ineffably beautiful/moving albums i've ever heard. sort of cant believe it's 9 years this month since i first heard it.

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Sunday, 3 August 2014 02:27 (eleven years ago)

i remember early in high school someone told me about this album and i would look at it in the itunes store and play samples from each of the tracks (didn't have enough $ to buy it). the sample of "Grass" was so appealing to me but I was confused by the screaming. anyway, the album seemed like a window into a whole world of cool music i didn't understand but wanted to be acquainted with.

Treeship, Sunday, 3 August 2014 02:33 (eleven years ago)

i was 12, in the thick of becoming really, really obsessed with music. i remember lots of people on other boards talking about it, and I got the leak on OiNK (RIP). i must've already heard grass and liked it. i dont remember listening to the first three songs for the first time, but the moment The Purple Bottle started is etched in my mind. that hannah barberra technicolor sound of the galloping drums, a stunning visual - the heartbeat, the big big beat. still one of my favorite love songs ever. "crush high"

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Sunday, 3 August 2014 03:18 (eleven years ago)

i told someone that the purple bottle was my favorite anco song once and he sneered and said that was their "poppiest" song.

Treeship, Sunday, 3 August 2014 03:24 (eleven years ago)

all the jam band fans they gained around the turn of the decade are so annoying - especially, and I'm not speaking about you, the use of the acronym "AnCo," which was created by Carles/Hipster Runoff as a joke. But it took off even though it's another dumb acronym in the baby voice style of HR - i.e. vampy weeks. but ppl use AnCo sincerely. what also bugs me is that they already had an acronym - the AC! - which is way cooler anyway. end rant

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Sunday, 3 August 2014 03:30 (eleven years ago)

u guys r young. back in my day collected animals were all fields. but i was young then too and being an animal collective fan was quite exciting. the speed at which they were moving through so many great ideas. i saw them do feels songs live even before sung tongs came out! that was good.

Merdeyeux, Sunday, 3 August 2014 16:58 (eleven years ago)

vampy weeks! how come i didn't know about that, that is awesome.

i always write anco. and i don't really feel feels. strawberry jam and here comes the indian are my jams.

Frederik B, Sunday, 3 August 2014 19:04 (eleven years ago)

always heard 'AnCo' used pejoratively by detractors for some reason. They did gain a pretty hideous following and perhaps deserved backlash not long after this album, but up until Strawberry Jam I think they were one of the best and most imaginative bands coming out of the US indie/alt scene.

after merriweather, the frats at my college started playing animal collective sometimes. i remember vaguely thinking this should upset me but then realizing i didn't care at all.

Treeship, Monday, 4 August 2014 11:15 (eleven years ago)

i don't really get why people would blame bands for the fans that happen to be drawn to them. especially a band like this, which pretty clearly always did their own thing and let their music develop organically rather than chase any sort of fanbase.

Treeship, Monday, 4 August 2014 11:20 (eleven years ago)

OTM. A lot of anti=Animal Collective sentiment on ILM seemed to revolve around the 'kind' of band they are and what sort of people they allegedly attracted. Very rarely did it feel as though those slagging them off had even bothered to listen to more than 10 seconds of their music.

3kDk (dog latin), Monday, 4 August 2014 11:42 (eleven years ago)

I listened to "The Purple Bottle" yesterday for the first time in a long time and I couldn't believe that I used to like it so much, it seems so silly and childish now. OTOH, the song is about exactly that -- reminiscing about being silly and childish -- so perhaps I should shut up and learn to love it again ...

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 4 August 2014 11:43 (eleven years ago)

must admit i haven't listened to Feels for a long time either and I fear my tolerance for tweeful sentimentality might have dwindled since I was 25. lots of music sounds dated 10 years after the fact I guess.

3kDk (dog latin), Monday, 4 August 2014 11:54 (eleven years ago)

feels was a dissapointment for me when it came out. i had seen them play these songs a bunch of times and they had this weird, backwoods hillbilly psychedelic sound that didn't translate to the album. turn into something was called country fuck and featured a duck call solo! haven't loved an AC album since sung tongs, but I like seeing them live.

I thought the anti sentiment mostly revolved around the vocals? I'm super into AC but it's a difficult complaint to counter.

Tim F, Monday, 4 August 2014 12:30 (eleven years ago)

are the vocals particularly difficult? noah's got an excellent voice. i guess Avey gets a bit shrieky sometimes... never saw it as a problem myself but then i generally like weird-arsed vox

3kDk (dog latin), Monday, 4 August 2014 12:35 (eleven years ago)

two years pass...

mystifies me that anyone could've heard this heard this after sung tongs and thought "ah, right, they're a proper rock band now." i swear i hear something new every time i listen to Feels and it's been 11 years. SJ is another story. that record has no sonic depth. but just now i put on 'Banshee Beat' and 'Loch Raven' is just ending now, and I'm hearing new Noah vocals I never heard before. half the songs don't even have drums.

flappy bird, Friday, 19 August 2016 03:30 (nine years ago)

Saw them live like four times before this album came out, still find the studio version of "Banshee Beat" disappointing in comparison.

spastic heritage, Friday, 19 August 2016 03:53 (nine years ago)

I understand, the same thing happened with me and the Strawberry Jam songs. saw them five months after feels came out, and they mostly played SJ songs - it was incredible, the sour, darker, twisted side of the gauzy, lovey-dovey thing going on in Feels. i discovered the AC when Feels leaked, eleven years ago this month. the live versions from 04/05 are much heavier and noisier. the record is so sedated, i can imagine it was a surprise and a drag.

flappy bird, Friday, 19 August 2016 03:59 (nine years ago)

but i was gonna say - this is my favorite mixing job on an album ever. the go-to example of what mixing is and why it's so important. according to kria brekkan there was lots of hash involved. well, YEP! sounds like it. whatever it takes...

flappy bird, Friday, 19 August 2016 03:59 (nine years ago)

it's weird to think that this came out when "feels" was only a verb and wasn't a plural noun yet

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 19 August 2016 04:00 (nine years ago)

i wonder if they would have called this record "feels" if they knew it would sound like it was named after some cutesy twee reddit bullshit in a couple of years

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 19 August 2016 04:03 (nine years ago)

yeah i think about that every time i hear the phrase now. it hasn't been that long since 'feels' entered the lexicon, maybe 3/4 years? it's a drag

flappy bird, Friday, 19 August 2016 04:04 (nine years ago)

i don't know what's more upsetting... the phrase 'feels' fiasco or the widespread adoption of 'AnCo'

flappy bird, Friday, 19 August 2016 04:05 (nine years ago)

This is the second and last AC album I've put on a year end top 10 list.

They should take a year or two off, listen through and rate the various live recordings, and kick of a "Dick's Picks" sorta bootleg series. I'd be willing to buy one or two.

the working title of SJ was strawberry awesomesauce

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Friday, 19 August 2016 21:08 (nine years ago)

I've never gotten into Feels. I think the sequencing bothers me, it's way too normal with the hits at the start and a more shapeless second half. One of the best things with AnCo is their sense of dynamics, so important when working with loops and drones, but Daffy Duck and Loch Raven is simply too much filler with Turn Into Something way too obvious as an ender. Had the album been better constructed, the same songs but put together differently, it might be one of my favorites. As it is, I much prefer Strawberry Jam, for instance.

Frederik B, Friday, 19 August 2016 22:02 (nine years ago)

Just listened to this at work for the first time in maybe 10 years. Don't like it. I think if I liked indie rock in the slightest, it would make more sense, but it just isn't very interesting, and when Avey Tare sings (ie most of the record), I actively dislike. Record could work as decent ambient music if there were no vocals at all, or only the backing vocals, as the instrumental tracks and general vibe can be pretty. Otherwise, cannot participate.

listening to Strawberry Jam now as part of same exercise, and to give you an idea of AC that I would listen to, it would be closer to something like "#1"

Dominique, Friday, 19 August 2016 22:33 (nine years ago)

incidentally the 'feels' name was (maybe, kind of?) a plural noun, borrowing from brian wilson:

I go to the piano and play “feels.” “Feels” are specific rhythm patterns, fragments of ideas. Once they’re out of my head and into the open air, I can see them and touch them firmly. Then the song starts to blossom and become a real thing.

Nice find! Good shot thats the genesis of the name given Panda Bear's affinity for B Dubs

Treeship, Saturday, 20 August 2016 01:49 (nine years ago)

Im daft but is this album the genesis of 'feels' as a noun?

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 20 August 2016 03:43 (nine years ago)

99% certain it's not. People who say stuff like "all the feels" don't strike me as pre-merriweather anco fans

Treeship, Saturday, 20 August 2016 03:52 (nine years ago)

one year passes...

still never heard a song that sounds anything like 'daffy duck'

flappy bird, Thursday, 1 February 2018 07:42 (eight years ago)

Vastly prefer my memory of hearing these songs live to the actual album. The studio version of “Banshee Beat” is especially subdued compared to the live version.
