It would have to be the Starstruck soundtrack, right? What could be better?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

since the accident or city slab horror?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Crowded House - Woodface

biz, Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

best in my collection is Hoodoo Gurus' Mars Needs Guitars.

teh Nü and Impröved john n chicago (frankE), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

"since the accident or city slab horror?"

Yeah, severed heads were the only group I could think of that could give Jo Kennedy a run for her money. But I still have to go with Starstruck. (as much as I love the Headz.)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

and, Hi Gareth! I was thinking of you and doomie today whilst playing The Unspoken Word's stellar album on Ascot entitled *Tuesday, April 19th*. You guys would love it.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

ac dc - highway to hell

tipustiger, Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

GARETH OTM (only I was initially thinking Come Visit The Big Bigot because I am a pop whore).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

(Also Kick has sentimental power for me.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

The Moles - Untune the Sky

caspar (caspar), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

I'll nominate The Triffids - Calenture

bg (creamolafoam), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Hunters + Collectors comes close too, just for the way that he says "WINCHING!!!" in the song "Towtruck". But it's not quite as good as Starstruck. Now I wish I had a copy of Human Frailty i could play. I haven't heard that one in years.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

i do own the jaws of life and the firman's curse, but i never want to play those for some reason.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Spring Hill Fair or some other Go-Bees record.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

When did the 1st Scientists album come out?

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Rose Tattoo - either Rose Tattoo or Assault and Battery.

Highway to Hell (like all Bon Scott AC/DC albums) came out more than 25 years ago.

xhuxk, Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

what about the angels/angel city, chuck? i thought they were yer fave.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Since I Left You (never heard an SH album)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

feedtime - shovel

dan (dan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

so what happened in the 90's down there, anyway? hahaha! just kidding. probably losts of stuff. i'll get to it all eventually. i promise.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I like Angel City, too! (And sometimes the Lime Spiders and Celibate Rifles and Scientists and Died Pretty and Men at Work and Savage Garden and Jamie O'Neal etc etc.) But Rose Tattoo are truly my faves.

xhuxk, Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

No love for the Saints' I'm Stranded?

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Wooops, too long ago. Sorry.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

>so what happened in the 90's down there, anyway?<

Country music!! And um, Powderfinger or somebody (though maybe those weren't really til the '00s, who knows?)

xhuxkj, Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Even a bad Severed Heads album stomps all over Since I Left You.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Go-Betweens. I'll take Liberty Belle, but really any will do.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

"Even a bad Severed Heads album stomps all over Since I Left You."

Amen to that! By an outback kilometer!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

In honor of you, Dan, I just put on my Big Car Remix twelve-inch. I'm starting with the Limo Mix.

Can't believe no one's mentioned The Church. I would choose Heyday as their best.

Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane

Jim M (jmcgaw), Thursday, 28 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

> Crowded House - Woodface

Crowded House were from New Zealand.

Palomino (Palomino), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Same thing! Ok, not really but close enough.

biz, Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

> ... The Church. I would choose Heyday as their best.

A fine choice. I'd nominate Starfish, which to my mind is not just the greatest Australian album of the last 25 years, but a strong contender for the greatest album ever.

Palomino (Palomino), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

> Same thing! Ok, not really but close enough.

Tell that to a New Zealander some time. You'll be eating through a straw for six months.

Those Kiwi's are known for their violence.

The Avalanches - Since I Left You

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Back in Black

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

What the hell happened to the Avalanches, does it take so long to get sample clearance?

Anyway either of the last two or Crowded House - Together alone, which if I'm being honest probably shades it.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

My take on what happened to The Avalanches:

"Oh shit! We only had enough ideas for one album! HIDE!"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

the Slugfuckers AND the Primitive Calculators pwn Severed Heads! wtf. I think they just sneak into the timeframe, right?

(also maybe: Paradise Motel - Left Over Life To Kill, Avalanches - Since I Left You, Spiderbait Grand Slam (just for "Glockenpop", y'know?), um . . . forgetting some obvious stuff, I know . . .)

etc, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

> either of the last two or Crowded House

My Kiwi friends, I feel your pain.

Palomino (Palomino), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Air Supply's Greatest Hits, Joe replied without a trace of irony.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

this is a difficult question to answer.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 28 July 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Prayers On Fire

From Her To Eternity

unlike The Avalanches, you rarely find the used bins holding several copies of either of these albums with a $4.99 sticker....

i don't think i can choose one, but a couple of candidates:

triffids - born sandy devotional
underground lovers - leaves me blind
screamfeeder - kitten licks
severed heads - bulkhead (yes i know it's a compilation)
go betweens - 16 lovers lane

leave it with me..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

even as we speak 'feral pop frenzy'

Custard - Wahooti Fandango

pistola, Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

other possibilities

someloves - something or other
died pretty - doughboy hollow
art of fighting - wires
the cannanes - arty barbeque

i've never heard the missing links lp in its entirety but it probably belongs here

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Laughing Clowns?

Either 'History of Rock n Roll Vol 1' ('Mr Udditch-Schmudditch Goes To Town' is possibly better but it's a bit too hard to get hold of to nominate without sounding like a wanker.)

scriblerus (mike lynch), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

who/what are screamfeeder, esoj?

etc, Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

there's no way i could answer this i don't think. i have great love for most of the albums esoj proposed though.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

brisbane band, started out more hardcore-ish but got progressively poppier over the course of half a dozen lps. 'kitten licks' is their classic, the subsequent albums were slicker but not as engaging.

in an odd way they're probably a big inspiration to australian emo bands (if there are any)

xpost

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

oh i forgot!! the hummingbirds - lovebuzz

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

hey jim i can't get hold of lovebuzz on cd, have you seen it around? i took heed of your opinion about blush though and managed to find a 'best of' for $10 to upgrade my cassingles. i love it! it got an absolute thrashing for a few weeks after i bought it.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

even i don't have it on cd :( although i have seen it around here and there. the idea that it is out of print is criminal

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

oh that is a shame.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

"in an odd way they're probably a big inspiration to australian emo bands (if there are any)"

There are lots! And they are considered big pests that people like to kill. Oh, wait, you said emo not emu. actually, it works both ways.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

also have you had a look at that new dom mariani anthology? do you think it is a good reflection of all his stuff, there doesn't seem to be much new stuff on there? i was thinking i could potentially get heaps of the original albums really cheap these days i suppose.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

i haven't seen it, but yeah you're probably better off getting the separate albums. the stems' stuff is nice price, the someloves album is getting royal reissue treatment in a month or two, dm3 stuff should be easy to find secondhand...

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

so many records so little time...

best? i dunno. my favourite? "Hanging Gardens" by The Necks.

(psst: best = favourite)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

I just realised that we're still at square one; nothing here really comes close to Starstruck, especially with the pop-up gatefold sleeve.

scriblerus (mike lynch), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

i don't even know what Starstruck is

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

haha neither do i jim. i thought it was because i was dopey.

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

a quick google indicates it has several songs by the swingers (not australian and a mental as anything track on, among others

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

actually i think the true greatest album is the "leather donut" compilation.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

er sorry i meant "waste sausage"

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

scott tell me there is a track on starstruck that sounds exactly like yellow by coldplayt.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

OMG!!! No! It is all very beautiful. I have worn two copies out. There is a gatefold copy!!! Ebay here i come.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

It also happens to be the greatest musical of the last 25 years, but that is for another thread.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Custard - Wahooti Fandango

-- pistola (pet...), July 29th, 2005.

hey i went out with paul scott's daughter a couple of times...

btw - crowded house were formed in sydney and had an australian member - seeing as though i HATE crowded house, they can have them. my pick, however is on nick cave and the black seeds 'from her to eternity'...

chris andrews (fraew), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

i thought crowded house had two australian members - paul hester and nick seymour were both australian, no?

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

nick cave and the black seeds

did they do a song called "sunflowers"?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights: otm with both Leather Donut and Waste Sausage! (but which to choose?)

scriblerus (mike lynch), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

She's the National Promotions & Publicity Co-ordinator at BMG Australia, which means helping out a lot of people with info on acts such as Hamish, the Australian Idol finalists, John Farnham, Duncan James, Augie March (pic'd) and a lot more...

Who are your personal 3-5 favourite Australian artists and why?
You Am I – favourite band full stop!
Augie March – What beautiful music those boys make.
Even – A true testament to the quality of what we have in our own backyard.
Machine Translations – each release amazes me yet I feel like the best is still to come.
The Sleepy Jackson – again another Aussie act I think will go from strength to strength. The future is bright.

What are your 3-5 most played Australian releases? Why?
You Am I – everything!

Augie March – "Sunset Studies" – this album travels with me.

Smudge – "You Me Carpark Now" – Best album title ever! Every time I think of it I have to play it.

RooArt Compilation – "Youngblood" - Bought with my first ever paycheck, I haven’t dug this one out in a very, very long time but I think the fact that I almost wore it out in those first few months warrants an inclusion on a ‘Most Played’ list.

Tiddas – "Sing About Life" – beautiful songs, blissful harmonies for when I need to be reminded of what’s important.

What do you think is the most influential Australian album of all time?
I would have to say You Am I's "Hi Fi Way", certainly the most influential for me and I know I am not alone there. For me, "Hi Fi Way" came out at a time when music had sort of grown a little stagnant and gave us something to be excited about again. I still get that same thrill to this day as I did the first time I heard it!

Who/where/when was the first local gig you ever attended?
Ratcat + INXS at the Sydney Entertainment Ctr. I think it was the Kick Tour – 1990? Not too sure [of the date] but I remember vividly that I went to see Ratcat and was not interested in INXS in the slightest – until they took they stage! They were undeniable that night, I left with a newfound respect.

Describe your most memorable Australian music moment:
Definitely Ratcat, Ride (UK), Falling Joys & The Clouds at The Hordern Pavilion 1991, an amazing night! And a triumph for Australian music – can anyone even remember what Ride’s set was like? I can’t.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

i've never head Leather Donut :( i was outbid on a copy the other day, it went for over $100

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

RooArt Compilation – "Youngblood"

surely not? it has all of three good songs on it if it's lucky. youngblood 3 was the best one.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

$100? and here i was thinking none of my vinyl was worth anything!

trying to think of a Gobs album has made me realise, somewhat to my horror, that they were a singles band. But that's a fight for another thread...

scriblerus (mike lynch), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

what are the greatest aussie albums of the previous 25 years?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

"RooArt Compilation – "Youngblood""

i have this! if it's the 80's one with 1313 Mockingbird Lane on it.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

yes it is

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Craven Fops, 'Spin the Bottle'.

(I'm not going to let the fact that I've never heard the whole thing stop me)

scriblerus (mike lynch), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sayin' it's the best, but Dave Graney's 'Night of the Wolverine' should get a mention.

My nom's for the greatest:
I second 'Axeman's Jazz' - Beasts rool
I also second 'I'm Stranded' by The Saints.
'Hi Fi Way' - You Am I. It's too complete for words.
...and I'm still thinking of more. I'll be back...

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if i still have that craven fops lp or if it disappeared in one of my many sell-offs

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

I think all the Hummingbirds shit is out of print apart from the $10 best-of. There's a bloke at work who's got most of their 7"s for sale though, if anyone's looking.

Crowded House: formed in Sydney, lived in Melbourne, 2/3 members were Australian*, management was in Sydney, business registered in Australia. "lead singer is NZ ex-pat" doesn't really outweigh everything else.

*or across all line-ups:
Hooper - 3 Oz/1 NZ
Rayner - 2 Oz/2 NZ
Hart - 2 Oz/1 NZ/1 US
Finn - 2 Oz/2 NZ/1 US (but Tim was a long-time Melbourne resident at the time)
Jones - 3 Oz/1 NZ/1 US.

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

(whoops 2 Oz/1 NZ/1 US on that last one, but they had git techs playing extra guitar and keyboards and whatnot so probably like 5 Oz REALLY)

the actual question of the thread is far too hard to contemplate

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

I think all the Hummingbirds shit is out of print apart from the $10 best-of.

maybe HAC should do for them what they're doing for the someluvvies?

No, really.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

the Whit;ams, Eternal Nightcap (I got so sick of this at the time but recently revisited it and changed my mind)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

moley said pseudo echo

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

also if it was on mono no one would have responded to my posts

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

just in case you have some lying around, dogs in space soundtracks go for like a hundred bucks on ebay. i think. on vinyl anyway. i don't know about cd.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

I was just kidding about Pseudo Echo. But that's a shame really, because it would be better if I wasn't.

Australians don't make good albums, only good singles. I'd nominate 'Pig's Arse' as the best ever Australian compilation album. If I had to pick something else, it would be 'Since the Accident' by Severed Heads or 'Leichenschrei' by SPK, or maybe something by feedtime or X.

moley (moley), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

o man i'm gonna sell my dogs in space lp

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

the weird thing is, i just looked on ebay and an american copy of dogs in space went for 100 bucks and two aussie copys went for 20 & 40. doesn't make sense. other than the covers they are the same, aren't they?

meanwhile, i found my dream copy of Starstruck with the original (and better) cover and the gatefold, but i don't have 26 bucks to spare right now:

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

ooh i've found a copy of leather donut for sale but it's US$55

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

there are two versions of the DIS soundtrack, aren't there, with one having all the swearing cut out? perhaps the expensive ones were the dirrrty version.

haitch (haitch), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

i'd love to see that movie again. i wore out the copy at my local video library when i was at highschool.

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

I think it's coming out on DVD! a restored print was getting toted around at... some film festival earlier in the year I think.

haitch (haitch), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

re-he-heally! one day a dvd i want is going to push me over the edge and force me to actually buy a dvd player. this could be it!

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

there is lots of hummingbirds stuff on ebay. including that love buzz cd:

http://cgi.ebay.com/THE-HUMMINGBIRDS-LOVE-BUZZ-CD-DELETED_W0QQitemZ4749963391QQcategoryZ43633QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

like a lot of people, i bought the dogs in space soundtrack cuzza the girly version of shivers. that got a lot of college radio play in the states.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

the version of pumping ugly musicle is pretty great.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

i think i was half asleep earlier... as i said - australia can have'em

chris andrews (fraew), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

what does it mean when it says 'deleted' in the title-bar thingo? i fear ebay as i have an addictive personality. hence i've never used it.

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

it means that it is out-of-print.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

can you buy the complete run of prisoner:cell block h on dvd in australia? if so, i might have to buy one of those all-regions dvd players. and rob a bank. (cuz i am poor, but i would love to have them all. you know what they did to that show here, don't you? cut all the episodes down to half an hour and took out all the good stuff. bastards.)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

I agree somewhat with the "Starstruck" soundtrack - although anything by The Swingers ("Practical Jokers", for instance - but they're bloody Kiwis!) will do. I also rather like Mental As Anything "Fundamental", Machinations "Big Music" (or "Uptown"), Models "Pleasure Of Your Company", Whitlams "Undeniably" (original version), Divinyls "Tempermental"...Radio Birdman "Radios Appear" (Overseas Version), I'm Talking "Bear Witness" (sounds like Scritti Politti, however), GANGgajang "1st album", B.C.O. "Born" etc etc - Australian music is truly decent stuff!

SoHoLa (SoHoLa), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

A fine choice. I'd nominate Starfish, which to my mind is not just the greatest Australian album of the last 25 years, but a strong contender for the greatest album ever.

It's a great one. I always thought "Spark" was an exceptionally cheesey number, but all the others are great. I used to have a Westwood 1 live concert from that tour which was out of hand. Would love to have it back...

sympathizer (sympathizer), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

An independent station in San Diego showed Prisoner: Cell Block H for a while when I was a kid. It was disturbing. That theme song is disturbing. Most of the things that were deeply disturbing to me as a child were things that I saw on TV.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

is the theme song "on the outside?" downunder the show was just called: prisoner

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

I think I have, or once had, a pretty fair portion of these, and Midnight Oil's 10 to 1 seems to be looming above them. I lost it somewhere and haven't heard in many years, so I may be off. So much great stuff listed above though.

Hunter (Hunter), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

My favourites:

The Triffids - Born Sandy Devotional
The Church - Hologram of Baal
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
The Go-Betweens - Liberty Belle etc.
The Paradise Motel - Still Life (though EP Please Keep Me Safe is better and the international comp release Left Over Life To Kill probably best)
The Underground Lovers - Leaves Me Blind
Kylie Minogue - Fever

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 29 July 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

I'd nominate Starfish, which to my mind is not just the greatest Australian album of the last 25 years, but a strong contender for the greatest album ever.

I've had a serious love affair with this record for 17 years now. Aside from certain friends and family members, it's the longest stable relationship I've ever had.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 29 July 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

Red Sails is better than 10-1 (though the CD could do with a good hard remastering)!

maybe HAC should do for them what they're doing for the someluvvies?

problem would be that Warners or Sony or whoever owns the rooArt stuff these days prolly wouldn't let it go. someone could maybe do a compilation of just the early Phantom singles, (at least you'd get Alimony) but I suspect the next problem would be Simon's reluctance to get involved with anything that might bring attention or success.

(M0dern G!ant played Hindsight as the final encore at their Sydney album launch, with Mary Wyer and T. Morgz on vocals, and got away with it by not telling Simon ahead of time they were going to do it. he actually smiled!)

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 29 July 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

i'd be very interested to hear more about Simon H and his relationship with the H'birds days..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

i am so hanging out for the Laughing Clowns box set, any day now

mentalist (mentalist), Friday, 29 July 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

These all need to be considered

Underground Lovers - Dream It Down
Church - Blurred Crusade
Drop City - Magix Transistor Radio

mentalist (mentalist), Friday, 29 July 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

This is really too hard. But if a gun was put to my head I'd probably mumble something about some Laughing Clowns, Go-Betweens or Triffids record circa 1981-4.

Was Kitten Licks quite great then?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

it possibly seems a little dated now but at the time it was a shot out of the blue. that jebediah and their ilk were chart stars and screamfeeder wallowed in relative obscurity was a travesty

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

do you reckon someone will release born sandy devotional again soon? i would like to upgrade that from my wobbly cassette version too

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

that should still be in print on mushroom - your local $10 cd store should have copies..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

nope it's out of print on mushroom

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

that's fucking ludicrous. somebody should be fired for letting that go out of print.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

thats a great record.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

If the Go-Betweens catalogue can be reissued twice over, then yeah, someone should find a reason to get excited about the Triffids again by now! The bits that are scattered across long-lost singles are themselves enough to get me excited about potential bonus tracks!!

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

i am so hanging out for the Laughing Clowns box set, any day now

is it seriously almost out?? omg omg omg.

gem, I'm pretty sure that I saw copies of it in a JB fairly recently!

haitch (haitch), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

Junkyard by the Birthday Party.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

i never really took to junkyard. and prayers on fire - though containing some great moments - doesn't quite work for me. i love the later eps though. and release the bats is one of the greatest singles ever.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

actually i don't own junkyard and feel a strange hankering to hear it RIGHT NOW.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

the only triffids recording i have on cd is a live recording at stockholm, it's very sad. although i must say the stockholm one is wonderful but still. it has this breathtaking version of 'how could i help but love you' which i'm always compelled to play at top volume at 4am when i'm smashed. i'm sure my neighbours share my deep affection for it.

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

was the mccomb solo record any chop?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

well there are none in the perth jbs haitch! i've been chasing it for a little while. i asked in 78s again today, they gave me some garbled explanation of labels changing which went over my head. no joy anyways.

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 29 July 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

That literal-as-can-be Laughing Clowns cover is hilarious. But the fact that y'all say it now FINALLY exists is making me tremendously antsy.

Hot Recs innit. They seem to have been talking about this for about a decade.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 29 July 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

It's being put out by Hot Records, their website doesn't say anything about it, that info came from www.thekuepperfiles.com

mentalist (mentalist), Friday, 29 July 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

fuckin awesome i might get a promo. hot recs rox.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

I might change my vote from Scientists to Celibate Rifles - Sideroxylon. This will probably change again later!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 29 July 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Five Languages was a pretty great one too, but I think I'll go with Marcello: Junkyard.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 29 July 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

i really love tactics - my houdini

i dunno about all this "best" stuff.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

Hi Fi Way - You Am I

The Velvet Overlord (The Velvet Overlord), Friday, 29 July 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

best celibate rifles album was actually *quintessentially yours* (american comp of best tracks of their first 2 aussie lps, i think.) their best single was "sometimes (i wouldn't live here if you paid me)." later stuff kinda wussed them out, as i recall.

xhuxk, Friday, 29 July 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I know it is not usual to pick a current cd for a list like this but the Go Betweens - Oceans Apart is my pick.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

The songs on Hi Fi Way are great, but I always thought some of the more uptempo tracks (like Punkarella) felt really sluggish on it (lacking in energy?), especially compared to the way they'd belt them out live.

The only albums I can think of that haven't been mentioned are Tex Perkins - Dark Horses and The Mark Of Cain - Ill At Ease.

Mil (Mil), Saturday, 30 July 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

YAI = ZZZ

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 30 July 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

There was a lot of buzz about a Dogs In Space DVD a year or so ago, but I wrote to the companies that were supposed to be handling it a few months ago and was told that there were no imminent plans to put it out. I hope that changes. It is on DVD already, but it's a crappy video transfer w/no extra items. I was under the impression that the Aussie version has dialog from the film between tracks (the US version doesn't) so I'm not clear on why ours would be more expensive.

dlp9001, Saturday, 30 July 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

Distant Locust - Fearful Pleasure

From the mid 80's. They were sort of what early Joy Division might've become if they'd had a drum machine and synths. Worth a listen now, when this sound is back in again,

Australia can have crowded house.. (And russell crowe while we're at it).

I like that sheriff lindo record!
Also back in black, Gerling 'Bad Blood', Nick Cave (though Boatmans Call and Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus are the only album's I've got)..

Anyone going to mention TISM?

Bn1, Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

I just rented the 2 disc Special Edition DVD of Starstruck--I guess it just came out here, deleted scenes and all. I'm so excited! I'm hoping to find out what happened to Ross "I Want to Live in a House" O'Donovan. I had such a crush on him back then. There's commentary and interviews with Gillian Armstrong, the writer, some producers and crew. No interviews/audio track with the stars, though, unfortunately.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 31 July 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

my youngest daughter would like to nominate the wiggles. i however . . .

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Sunday, 31 July 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr - yes, Tactics, although I'd vote for Blue and White Future Whale... which could also win a poll for "Most pretentiously-titled Australian album".

the most recent australian album that i loved was by Virgin Black. it was entitled * elegant...and dying * i think it made my top-ten for 2003. so, if you are ever looking for a great gothdoommetal album...

Rose Tattoo - either Rose Tattoo or Assault and Battery.

One of the dudes from Rose Tattoo (ie not Angry) runs my local bottle shop. He's a nice guy.

16 Lovers Lane is the finest Australian album of all time for sho.

Gala Mill by the Drones and Reservations by Sodastream (RIP) are two excellent recent Australian albums.
But definately NOT Powderfinger. Christ I'm sick of hearing those jokers.

Drooone, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

The only australian album I've listened to from the past 25 years was Wolfmothers titular album.

otherwise I would have to say highway to hell but I really haven't heard it and I dont know it it qualifies.

wesley useche, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

Wolfmother are fairly embarrassing. I apologise for them. And the Vines. And those cunts who do the "forever young" cover.

Drooone, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

Rand & Holland
the Necks
All India Radio

The Birthday Party - Junktayd of course

Zeno, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Dunno about the 1st Scientists album, a bit too on the pop for me, though you gotta have some respect for someone putting all those songsbout girls on one record.

I'd have to nominate Blood Red River (1983) or This Heart Doesn't Run On Blood, This Heart Doesn't Run On Love (1984) if you consider the latter to be an album (only 5 tracks).

But, of course, I'm biased. They're friends of mine and I gigged with them for 4 months when they chucked Brett out of the band.

Now and Forever -- Air Supply

rockcrit88, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

milky - just the way you are

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

I'll nominate The Triffids - Calenture

That gets my vote too.

t**t, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Lubricated Goat - Plays the Devil's Music

UncleTomfly, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Junkyard is cool but The Bad Seed slays...the switch of Mick Harvey to drums made all the difference in the world.

Hands up, who wants to die?

Changed my world.

Custard - Wahooti Fandango

pistola, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Calenture third/fourthed, but my co-worker was in Lubricated Goat, so I feel obliged to big-up "The Devil's Music"

Morley Timmons, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

Seward & Chuck are right, except for country music the 90's are thin on classic albums in Oz. Of course, a decade later, we have <moustache>Thirsy M*rc</moustache>, so the drought has finally broken.

moley, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

I was amazed to see so much 'Starstruck' luv on this thread. Is it really that good? Like, as good as Sweet and Sour?

moley, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

I'm suprised at the love too - my little brother used to rent quadrophenia and starstruck religioulsy on vhs when teenagers..have'nt seen it in about 17 yeaqrs...but would imagine it's still great - partly becasue 'the swingers' are the backbone of the group featured - at least 3 really good songs in it

grap-fu, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

Re Scientists 1st album, I've since found out what I thought was the 1st album was actually a compilation of that and the early singles - if that actually was their 1st album it would be the best power pop album ever!

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

INXS - KICK

BTW neil finn has gone on record and stated crowded house was an aussie band formed in melbourne with 2 aussies while he was living there...

...'don't dream its over' is a kiwi song though but you aussies can have the rest

hehe...

pollywog, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

damn right there oughta be some GoB's love on this thread. i'll pick talullah, but i like 16 lover's lane nearly as much.

outdoor_miner, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

free dirt - died pretty

honourable mentions:

out - happy hate me nots
rotund for success - severed heads
cinder - dirty three
spaceman in a satin suit - celibate rifles
the sun never sets - the herd
babylon - crown of thorns
ascension - the aints
hourly daily - you am i
venus traps fly - machine translations

typpo, Thursday, 15 March 2007 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

moley: yes, Starstruck really is that good, in fact it's better. If you liked Sweet and Sour it's a must-see... it's like that series older cooler sister or something.

mrlynch, Thursday, 15 March 2007 01:07 (nineteen years ago)

why hasn't anyone mentioned Toto yet?

MaGoGo, Thursday, 15 March 2007 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

Go-Betweens, Go-Betweens. Go-Betweens? Go-Betweens. Oh, Go-Betweens. Go-Betweens.

Honorable mention: That TISM album which actually sold more than ten copies because it captured the spirit of Melbourne in 1995 right there on compact disc.

King Boy Pato, Thursday, 15 March 2007 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

"I was amazed to see so much 'Starstruck' luv on this thread. Is it really that good?"

it's the best! and EVERY song is good. seriously, one of my fave movies and soundtracks ever. fave albums ever! um, but i guess i've rambled on about it enough on here.

i just found this awedome page with lots of up-to-date jo kennedy info:

http://www.the-cosmic-forces.net/cast/kennedy_jo.html

sadly, none of her other work made it over here :(

scott seward, Thursday, 15 March 2007 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

er, "awesome" page

scott seward, Thursday, 15 March 2007 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

wiggles - big red car

Rikard Fortworth, Thursday, 15 March 2007 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

Are you Australian, Scott?

Drooone, Thursday, 15 March 2007 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

oof, i get enough big red car, believe me.

i LOVE the new virgin black album, by the way. they might be my fave australian band right now. don't get me wrong though, i'll always have a soft spot for destroyer 666.

the cool thing about virgin black is that they are putting out THREE albums this year. a trilogy!

scott seward, Thursday, 15 March 2007 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

me, no. i'd love to visit some day though.

scott seward, Thursday, 15 March 2007 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes, you should.

Drooone, Thursday, 15 March 2007 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

It would be nice to meet you!

moley, Thursday, 15 March 2007 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

!

Drooone, Thursday, 15 March 2007 05:26 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, props to you for lovin the ol Destroyer 666. Then of course there's Bestial Warlust. My fave 'Heads records are not within the last 25 years (!!), so I'll go with SPK's Leichenschrei, which just about creeps in I think.

moley, Thursday, 15 March 2007 05:30 (nineteen years ago)

What about Lubricated Goat's Psychedelicatessen?

Brooker Buckingham, Thursday, 15 March 2007 06:09 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...

my double-disc edition of Starstruck just arrived* from Amazon!

* actually has been sitting in my boss's pigeonhole for who knows how long, possibly a week

mrlynch, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 01:41 (nineteen years ago)

clouds - penny century

I was just coming here to post this :D

Trayce, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

Been huffing In the Pines lately.

It's just so nice, isn't it. So pleasant.

Drooone, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

whatever album had "Don't Call Me Baby" on it

milo z, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

Love in Bright Landscapes is within the date range still, isn't it? Even though it's a compilation. And I haven't got a tape player so can't listen to my copy.

mrlynch, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

<i>Been huffing In the Pines lately.

It's just so nice, isn't it. So pleasant.</i>

i spent my sunday in the company of the dude that mastered the reissue. nice chap.

electricsound, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

stupid italics

electricsound, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 08:28 (nineteen years ago)

Does "Woodface" count? The two creative brains of the band were originally Kiwis, but they moved to Australia before starting it, and the other members were both Australians.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

Marcello nailed this one early on

J0hn D., Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Depends which mast you're looking at, J0hn.

t**t, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

well, i guess i'll say 'lovebuzz' by the hummingbirds.

andi, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Some other contenders, if Crowded House don't count, would be AC/DC's "Back In Black" (even though they had a British singer at the time, but he has hardly ever contributed anything positive to the band anyway) or one of the two last Kylie Minogue albums. Men At Work's "Cargo" is also quite nice, and a lot better than the better-selling "Business As Usual".

However, I think, if I cannot vote for Crowded House, I'll go for "The Bee Gees 1st", which is a great underrated 60s twee pop album, and still the best thing they've ever done.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm. Didn't see the "last 25 years" bit. That'll be Kylie Minogue and "Body Language" then (I consider that one better than "Fever")

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

No I would've picked you as a Savage Garden or Real Life fan, Geir.

moley, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

No = now

moley, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 22:47 (nineteen years ago)

I never heard that Real Life album. The two singles were great.

Savage Garden are too MOR.
