"All musicians should write poetry or at least read it if they want to improve their game. Except for people who believe lyrics don't matter. This is the Brian Billick theory of songwriting: Defense (the music) not offense (lyrics) wins championships (Grammys). The best teams of course have both. And the Ravens were very dull and unlikable. They weren't built to last. My songs are built to provide years of shadowplay."

ath (ath), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

When God was young, he made the wind and the sun
Since then, it's been a slow education

And you got that one idea again
The one about dying.

Oh oh oh I'm lightning
Oh oh oh I'm rain
Oh oh oh it's frightening
I'm not the same, I'm not the same,
I'm not the same

There's a screen door banging in the wind
Remember you wanted to be like George Washington back then

Everybody's going down on themselves
No pardon me's or fare thee wells in the end

Oh oh oh I'm lightning
Oh oh oh I'm rain
Oh oh oh it's frightening
I'm not the same, I'm not the same,
I'm not the same

I normally don't care about lyrics in music, but nobody's lyrics sink into my head like Berman's. and this changes things. in fact without the lyrics, there is nothing there. its a different approach to listening. I feel like I'm hearing a real person.

marbles (marbles), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Ain't ya heard the news? Adam and Eve were Jews.

Good for Mr. Berman.

Savvy Jones (Savvy Jones), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I noticed the Jewish Forward did an article on him too. It's kind of funny.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

This is one of those things that says more about me than Berman, but is anyone else somewhat frightened about the implications for his next album due to his newfound strong faith?

like murderinging (modestmickey), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

so, how was the show?

arjun (arjun), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

It was really nice... the band sounded good (three guitars, keyboard, Paz on violin), especially on the new songs. DCB forgot the lyrics to a few songs (both from "American Water"), and was a little stumbly in general (he seemed more into performing at the Pitchfork Fest show), but it's not like you go expecting Neil Diamond.

One kinda bummer was that Cassie B. sang "The Poor, The Fair, and the Good" (my favorite) in a faux-"country" twang (as if maybe to emphasize its affinity with a Nashville ballad), which didn't work for me.

I'm at WORK, Otto! (samjeff), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the "the poor..." sounded like that on the CD

marbles (marbles), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

I sing all of the silver jews songs in a faux country twang. its kind of fun actually. either that or a faux punk clip. which works pretty good too.

marbles (marbles), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

On the sidewalk after the show, I bought a black long-sleeved tee for $5 - it has a white transfer of the promo pic above (DCB with the newspaper), and "Silver Jews" in vertical lettering... it's great!

I'm at WORK, Otto! (samjeff), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'll have to listen closely to the CD - I thought she sang normally on there. The put-on accent had too much of a "meta" effect onstage... like she was bored with the song, or something. It undercut the impact for me (I think the choruses are so beautiful).

I'm at WORK, Otto! (samjeff), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

x-post Mickey. I don't see why it should frighten you that he's become more religious, especially since it seems like it happened before the recording of Tanglewood. He's going to a conservative congregation, so it's not like he's become a hassid or Matisyahu Berman. And if he needs some religion to keep himself sane, off crack, and not suicidal, shouldn't you be happy for him?

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, the last line of the last song on Tanglewood Numbers (repeated over and over again) is "I saw God's shadow on this world".

I miss him too, but I did not love that last record. I think it signalled a need to give it up for at least a while.

grandavis, Friday, 2 March 2012 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

I't didn't quite convince me either, but I still hunger for more..

Mule, Friday, 2 March 2012 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

If he comes back I imagine it will be because he feels he has something new to say musically. I think that last record was evidence that he just wasn't feeling it any more. I think he made the right call for now.

183. Every line of "I Remember Me" is amazing, but the ending to the story never fails to absolutely devastate me:

He bought a little land with the money from the settlement
And he even bought the truck that had hit him that day
He touched the part where the metal was bent.
And if you were there you would hear him say.

I remember her and I remember him
I remember them and I remember then..
I'm just rememberin' I'm just rememberin'

I wasn't quite sure
If a night clerk was working within
From behind a red curtain
Limped a perilous person
He appeared to have some egg on his chin

This old yankee warlock
Brushed back a gray forelock
And bid me to sign in the book
With no bonhomie
He proffered the key
Never once did he give me a look

198. Well the water looks like jewelry
When it's coming out the spout
And nothing could make me feel better
Than a wet kiss on the mouth

I never knew the bird could fly so low

They don't come to you at all
