Is it wrong for an indie rocker to LOVE System of a Down?

Cuz I do. Go Ahead and rant, but I love em'

Jockey, Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought System Of A Down was the indie-approved nu-metal band.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, there's also Weezer. (Much less 'nu-', admittedly.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, you're fired.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Weezer aren't even metal! I think my nuts are more metal.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

And, Jockey, yes it is very wrong. Maybe a couple of years ago, you could've snuck a copy of Toxicity (and maybe some Deftones disc) out of Newbury Comics between Radioactivity and that Loose Fur business. But now, you'd better be rockin' the Opeth hoodie or YOU. ARE. OUT.

[xpost]

Hence, the firing.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan's Metal Nuts is surely the next big anime to hit stateside.

adam (adam), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, do your metal nuts say "Squirtle" a lot?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll have to ask my wife.

The Ghost of OH NO HE DIDN'T (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the only reason I'm thinking of listening to them is because they're indie-approved and I like their politics so I think I should probably fuck right off,

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

but at least I'm not guilty about it so haha

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I just wish their lyrics weren't such indefensible crap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I just love the schizophrenic riffs with the big drums and the carnival barking vocals. I refuse to feel guilty because I dont want to always listen to 7 minutes of blips and bleeps with a guy moaning about how he's a geek and his mommy spanked him or something...

Jockey, Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Their early stuff was better.

Rockist, Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask AaronHz.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sort of an indie-rocker, and I love 'em. Do not feel guity. This is good rock (new one and older stuff).

southern lights, Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

if loving is wrong i dont want to be right

Who is this?? Send please.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I doubt you'll find anyone here who would try to make you feel guilty for that, Jockey.

I love 'em too. If anything, I feel guilty for liking something with such terrible lyrics.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Love them. I don't think the lyrics are trying to be good in the way indie rock lyrics try to be good. Most of the indie rock I own has random, silly lyrics that don't say much of anything. SOTD just happen to be over the top and ridiculous. OK! I mean, why feel guilty. Hmm, Queens of the Stone Age (indie approved?) are on the radio right now and their lyrics are pretty damned stupid.

I used to have a copy of some Korn vs. Daft Punk mashup, that might be what you're looking for.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

So... Indie Approved Metal:
QOTSA
SOAD
Rammstein (yes? no?)
Early Black Sabbath (cause, y'know, Malkmus loves 'em)
Motorhead

what else?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 20 May 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate SOAD because they always come up on ebay when i'm searching for cds on Morr.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 20 May 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Mastodon, Burning Witch, Sun O))), crazy japanese metal, some stuff on hydrahead and most stuff on Southern Lord or Load are indie approved, I believe, but I'm basing this on a couple years ago.

Shaun (shaun), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

And my friend helped Rick Rubin with mastering their new album, so I'm famous.

Shaun (shaun), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"b.y.o.b" is awful

miccio (miccio), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I like those guys a lot. Haven't heard the new one, but they'd be hard pressed to come up with a better song than Deer Dance from Toxicity. GREAT song.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

You hurt me, miccio.

Sundar (sundar), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems like they have a lot of good ideas but their songs are just always MEH. The singer has some cool moments but usually he is crap.

A homunculus of Darby Crash, .... created for the purposes of *EVIL* (ex machina, Friday, 20 May 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

their not really lyrics as much as space fillers; after all, man cannot live on yodel dodel la la la laaaah's exclusively- gotta throw some unrelated but actual words up in there too o'wise it's just instrumentals

(if only i could spell onomotopeia)

natlawdp, Friday, 20 May 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like the new album, but i am quite aware of its flaws at the same time.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 20 May 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

And if selling babies for crack is wrong, I don't wanna be right!

Ian Riese-Moraine is on toffuti break! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 20 May 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Mezmerize is fantastic, and the lyrics bother me less and less as I listen to it more and more (and realistically they're not all that bad to begin with...hard to imagine, say, a Rush fan getting on a high horse about them). I'm still kind of hearing the record as Opeth lite, but that's not such a terrible thing.

dlp9001, Friday, 20 May 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my gawd, this is all so tragically wrong! the lyrics are just about the best part of the whole fabulous package.

Lee F# (fsharp), Friday, 20 May 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll grant that "My cock is much bigger than yours" is a great opening line. Have to think about lyrics as best part for a while...luckily I'm listening to this at least twice a day, so plenty of chances to reconsider.

dlp9001, Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

casio plinker, Saturday, 21 May 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Just saw the SOTD live thing on MTV2. Now I have to go see these guys play... Daron is such a diva.

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 22 May 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I still just love the fact that it's a bunch of Armenian American dudes from Glendale doing all this. It makes me so happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 May 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

it's wrong for anyone 2 like this band

andy bell, Sunday, 22 May 2005 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Early Black Sabbath (cause, y'know, Malkmus loves 'em)

I suspect that the actual reason indie guys like Sabbath is that Sabbath kicks ass

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Sunday, 22 May 2005 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

people who refer to themselves as "indie rocker" = DUD, squared

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering if they're from Glendale but some bio I read said they're from SF? I havent heard the new album in full yet (I hated thel ast one's singles, but like BYOB) and yet I just wanna say...
DEFTONES

-- cutty (holle...), May 20th, 2005.

YES!! seriously.. they are so underrated! nothing SOAD do can compare to half the atmospheric tracks on White Pony

Vichitravirya XI, Monday, 23 May 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

boom! boom! boom! blah blah bombs creating death showers and other piss poor metaphors.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Monday, 23 May 2005 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

system of a down = the dismemberment plan of nu-metal

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

BYOB is incredible. It's what Nu-Metal SHOULD have sounded like. Shame we had to go through nearly ten years of bullshit from Limp Bizkit et al to get to this.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Old School Hollywood" is one of the greatest things any band has ever done in the history of like everything.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Maiden is indie approved. Actually, most metal seems indie approved these days.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck Klosterman's greatest (and sole) triumph.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

He's doing the Lord's work.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Time for a heresy (as opposed to atheism).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, I just reread Fargo Rock City and that's such a weird book...I have a background scarily similar to Mr. Klosterman actually (farm kid from MN sticks way into 80s metal turned indie dude later in life), but he has some really accurate observations about the way people thought (metal fans, that is)...the whole thing about how keyboards seemed like a total heresy but now he can't really remember why....also the non-metal acts that it was okay to listen to (Petty, Mellencamp, others)....BUT THEN, he's just INSANELY MISREADING THINGS....like this schtick about how Rush were a Christian band, he seems completely ignorant of the whole Ayn Rand thing...then he makes some comment about how Peart "loves Jesus more than he loves The Trees", when Trees is obv. such a ham-fisted racial strife/possibly anti-Affirmative Action screed it's like HAVE YOU EVEN FUCKING EVER LISTENED TO THE TREES???

Basically, he's sort of a great observationalist, but a fucking horrible analyst.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)
