I know you are all too damn cool for the 2005 Grammy Awards; but don't you think they deserve a little thread action anyway?

Quibbles? Squabbles? Predictions?

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My predictions.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Your Record of the Year prediction is a slam-dunk. Ray might even take Album of the Year too.

There's nothing Grammy likes more than "comeback" records by legendary performers, except for "comeback" records by legendary performers who go on to get sick and/or die.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

grammy likes to switch it up?

great post, sourpuss!

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict Candido & Graciela's Inolvidable will win the Traditional Latin (or whatever category it's in), because they are both very old, and I don't think Graciela's gotten the recognition she probably deserves. (Heck, I haven't heard much by her myself, but I've been impressed by what I've heard by her from the past.) And the timing is good, since there seems to be a mini-revival of mambo at the moment, which includes a lot of attention to Machito (with whom she sung). Candido and Graciela have some of that lost era appeal of BVSC without having come from exactly the same milieu.

I haven't actually heard this or any of the other nominations in this category, except the Cachao CD, which wasn't my thing, so I gave it to the library.)

Ironically, I feel less sure about the salsa/merengue picks, maybe because I actually know something about them. I'll agree with M*** and say Victor Manuelle, but only by a hair. I think this Marc Anthony album was a lot better received (critically and commercially) than his last salsa album. SPO is probably the best of the bunch, but they already won a Grammy recently (last year even? I forget). It would help if I knew exactly which of these artists have won in the past.

The major categories--I don't have a guess.

RS, Saturday, 12 February 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and I agree that Egypt is likely to win in the contemporary world category.

I'm hoping Si Soy Llanero will win in the traditional world category. I think it has a shot, but I don't have much of a feel for the status of the other titles listed.

RS, Saturday, 12 February 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, I was thinking that SPH won last year in the salsa category. In that case, hmmmm, I really don't know who's going to win. (Also I see that GSR has never won a Grammy.) (Too bad there's not a salsa singles category.)

RS, Saturday, 12 February 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

RS: I know! Also, too bad there's no singles category for a lot of stuff (including polka, because THAT would be DOPE).

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 12 February 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

as long as Kanye's performance at the televised ceremony doesn't involve green teepees and Native American dress I will be cheering him on to win any awards he is nominated for.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 12 February 2005 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Since both RS and Sourpuss are present and accounted for, let me just thank RS for them salsa CDRs, v. much of the good. The Baron Lopez remix of Africando's "Yay Boy" was sweet.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 February 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(Glad you are liking some of it, Ned, but I am going to avoid derailing M***'s Grammy thread into yet another s**** thread.)

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 13 February 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

naw, it's all good! I'm going to sit down sometime this week and write a track-by-track analysis of that CD, RS.

You said you were up for other Latin action? or should I do my world-famous country-that-doesn't-suck mix or something else?

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm definitely up for some Latin action, heh heh heh.

I'd be interested in hearing other Latin stuff, yes, maybe just recent Latin stuff that you've liked.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahaha, okay

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's watching tonight? Maybe we can get a little action going on this thread -- if we can get one-third of the hilarity that ensued on the MTV Awards 2004 thread, then it'll still be a good night no matter how many times the RIAA president tells us that downloading is evil.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, i dunno. when is it on? there are 2 episodes of the simpsons on tonight.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it starts at 8. But don't worry, the show is 17 hours long, so you won't miss too much if you take an hour to watch the Simpsons.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm planning on watching the Grammy's....if the wife can stomach it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha ... who's to say that you can stomach it? Or, for that matter, can I stomach it? TUNE IN AT 8 TO FIND OUT!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to see Tift Merritt and Elvis Costello win, but no chance in hell of either happening.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Monday, 14 February 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I don't think they do.

daavid (daavid), Monday, 14 February 2005 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a good thing they didn't do the obligatory old-people-in-big-surprise-opening-number this time around.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh...they're still doing medleys, though.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It burns! Ahhh, the burning!

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

This show needs more shots of old guys in suits looking uncomfortable while Black Eyed Peas run through the audience.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Maroon 5 could really use some studio magic.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

what songs are they playing? SOME OF US ARE AT WORK HERE PEOPLE. DETAILS PLZ.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No matter how much of the crowd's there to offer fake spontaneity, actual crowd cheering always seems really sparse and faint.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

first of you that just says "Alicia Keys! aaagh! wtf just happened?" without any explanation I will hate for life.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam Ant!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Scottish people! Aaagh! WTF just happened!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Sike.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Adam Ant should already get paid $$$ in fashion royalities.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a creepy moment of "get it started" that was over the end of "this love" that was amazingly creepy. Franz Ferdinand are on now for their 30 seconds of upbeat guitar action.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

HOT TOWN! SUMMER IN THE CITY!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Grammy chaos!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The medley idea: REALLY, REALLY, REALLY BAD!

Franz Ferdinand rock. Fuck the Black Eyed Peas.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Usher offers the messy debacle his props from the audience.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ellen Degeneres and the Edge are sitting onto two feet from each other. Feel the electricity!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Skynyrd?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

If Lil Jon ran over Black Eyed Peas with a truck at the end of that medley, all would have been complete. As it is, I'm going to watch The Simpsons now.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Medleys are always a bad idea: I figure producers must think people doing one entire song lacks the necessary dynamics to snag eyeballs in this brave new iPod world.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock in exceptionally short supply in the evening's line-up, it seems.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Lisa-Marie Presley's gonna be part of this? WHY?!?!?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh. Latifah.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ms. Latifah, you're not gonna do jokes. PLEASE TELL ME YOU ARE NOT GONNA DO JOKES.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh what kooky and eclectic presentation combinations are we gonna see tonight?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

people who don't immediately turn the channel to Arrested Development at 8:30 are mental

lemin (lemin), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Franz Ferdinand sounded really good, except I kept thinking I was watching Stop Making Sense..

I don't ever want to hear that Black Eyed Peas song ever again. They played it at the DNC convention last year, and we all know how that one turned out.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I was kind of amazed that they managed to mash all those songs together, as much of a mess as it was...I mean, singing "Heaven" and "This Love" and "Take Me Out" and "Rich Girl" all over "Let's Get It Started"? actually I was kind of impressed that they were able to make that work at all logistically, but I guess they're all kind of the same tempo.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

two of those songs were in my top whatever singles of the year. jesus.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda liked that Los Lonely Boys just won an award. I mean, their music is deathly dull, but there's something sort've sweet about the three brothers winnin' something. And their Dad was there.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

BEPs should change that song back to "Let's Get Retarded," since it would fit even more TV appearances.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The Brit Awards (once) had a "Can't Get You Out of My Head" + "Blue Monday" mash-up; all we get are truckloads of incoherent medleys.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

that whole thing was a train wreck. if i didn't hate any of those songs before, i do now.

("take me out" is still sorta okay, but grrr.....)

lemin (lemin), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Well THANK GOD Alicia's not wearing a hat this time around.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that Prince's old drummer Michael Bland with Alicia?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Meanwhile I'm sitting here listening to video game music.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw Ricky Martin clapping!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the Alicia song was actually kinda awesome. See, people, you can be dynamic while sitting down!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the jamie foxx / alicia collab. was spectacular.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

PRINCE WINS!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait wait wait...who won the dance music awards?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

So did Bill Clinton, for best Spoken Word Album. The tally thus far:

Bill Clinton: 1
Usher: 0

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Toxic won best record, Kish Kash won best album in dance.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

This better get better fast.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Kish Kash won best album in dance.

Yet another Grammy/ILM mind-meld!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Arrested Development is on, change to that. Just refresh this page occasionally: http://www.grammys.com/awards/grammy/47winners.aspx

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

So now Bill and Hilary have both won Grammys ... surely this makes them the first ever President-First Lady couple to do so?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Gag, I missed Fergie's abs, never mind the "medley." Still in pukeshock from Maroon5's Sting vs. Jerry Lewis. Gee this was a swell idea Matt. OMG! Border Collies on the Animal Planet's Agility Dog Show (pre-Westminster,which is tomorrow night) thank U J

don, Monday, 14 February 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Jerry Lee looks cadaverous, but I'm sure he'd kill each and every individual in the auditorium one-by-one if he could.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

So did Bill Clinton, for best Spoken Word Album. The tally thus far:

Bill Clinton: 1
Usher: 0

-- m.e.a. (flpyrw...), February 14th, 2005.

Usher already won 3 awards that were announced before the televised ceremony.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

If I didn't have deep suspicions about ILM's ability to recognize a good musical performance, it was cemented by the completely mental remarks being made about what must have been a Grammy opening in an alternate universe, as everyone in that opening medly was fucking awesome. So far, this is the first Grammy Awards where it looks like everyone's going to give a fantastic performance (esp. vocally).

Okay I realize the above is slightly undercut by U2 starting out with the moany slow song but Bono still sounds good.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Arrested Development is on, change to that. Just refresh this page occasionally: http://www.grammys.com/awards/grammy/47winners.aspx

-- mike h. (m...), February 14th, 2005.

Arrested Development guest-starring Martin Short = I'm not watching.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, are you kidding? Gwen and Eve just sounded totally *lost* and without lung power.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i def. think the performances are quite good -- better than last years "lets throw them against the wall to see what sticks" haphazard collaborations.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ray Charles has also won three non-televised Grammys, which makes me even more confident that he'll pick up some of the big awards.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

this U2 song is good! I liked it when they played it on SNL too. why did they release such a crappy song as their 2nd single instead of this?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jamie Foxx did not play that piano

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That's one of the best U2 songs in recent memory, ruined by Bono's sombrero.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Quentin Tarantino is sitting next to the RZA.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I have a short memory, but has there been a presentation duo or trio that lacked a movie star?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

are you saying he didn't or he can't? I wasn't playing close attention to whether he was during that performance, but I remember it being a big deal that he was really playing in Ray.

(x-post, re: Jamie Foxx)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

is the kill bill soundtrack up for something?

(x-post re: Q and Wu)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't give the rock award to the old people!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the sound of Penelope Cruz's voice when she says "American Idiot". Dreamy.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Green Day are probably the youngest people in that category! would you prefer it went to Costello? (xp)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

billy joe's nu-goth look is so hott.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I meant don't give it to Costello!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i sure hope green day mentions that they hate war

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The only thing dangerous about Green Day these days is that eyeliner, which would get Billie Joe laughed out of my college cafeteria.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess they must like war, then.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Ellen was sitting next to Portia de Rossi, speaking of "Arrested Development."

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

actually remove the "sure." if they said something remotely inflammatory it would half-dignify their entrance into this circle

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I was listening to Warning the other day and looking at the liner notes, and Billie Joe is definitely looking better these days than the chubby faced blond crewcut look he had in 2000.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't they a couple?

xpost

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimmy and John Paul were sitting together!! Has there been a rapproachment?

Bill Frisell wins best jazz album, most deserved. Sundar will be happy.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe he wears the eyeliner to keep the glare down, like football players.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

war has been very very good to green day

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Great! The CHEVY AD has a mash-up, and still we have medleys on the Grammys.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Green Day didn't thank the fans first. I'm insulted.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hot Stuff" is a better rock record than "American Idiot"

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

For a second I thought that RV ad was a commercial for night!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

They should call her Queen Charisma.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

if they haven't seen Taxi, I guess

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Queen Charisma Vacuum.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I miss the days when the Grammys didnt even aim for alternative respectability. I want Hall & Oates and Kenny Loggins, dammit.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, Marc Anthony doesn't know how to fill out a shirt.

HE LOOKS LIKE FRED SOLINGER.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Set malfunction!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Marc Anthony supposed to look like a trashbag sack of shit? Is that part of the performance?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I want Hall & Oates and Kenny Loggins, dammit.

A Clay Aiken sweep!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG. My abuela watches a telenovela modeled after this performance! this is so awesome!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

So does this song have a plot? It looks like the set of a Telenovela.

Jay Smooth (jsmooth995), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, you guys hate Marc Anthony. he did play an unsympathetic character very convincingly in Man On Fire, though.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm so hammered right now. Marc Antony looks and sing like Hayden Christensen.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, naw...Marc Anthony's fine. Least he can sing!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God, Dan must be DYING out there!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoyed that. Marc Anthony sounded great.

"Freebird!!!!!!"

What do assholes in concert crowds call out for when this is playing? Just curious.

Hey, southern rock is kind of country-ish, so if we have country stars sing... oh fuck, this just isn't working.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

haha of course they do JUST the slow part of "Free Bird", no solos.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

THE GRAMMY MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE RED STATES!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is Keith Urban?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

michael daddino is this thread's all-star. You win the grammy!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

rednecks across america are no longer confused. keith urban & elvin bishop saved that bloated performance.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Is "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" considered a Southern Rock classic? (Painfully short cut-off there.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

What does Tim McGraw sound like when he's in tune?

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(double yuck)

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Keith Urban is a pretty boy Country superstar from Australia, fyi.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's Nelly to PC this mess up?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

And where are Big & Rich?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Dickey Betts!! Fuckin' awesome. I hope Roger is watching.

Elvin Bishop sounded nice. good to see the fellow maroon getting some love. They should have totally had Elvin and Dickey guitar duel the coda to Freebird.

Hey Josh, happy birthday, btw! (a birdie told me)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

although I guess that could be in reference to Nelly too! (xp)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

SWEET FUCKING CHRIST DO I HATE SOUTHERN ROCK!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

how great would it be if Neil Young walked out and decked the Skynyrd guy?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Rob! We should get a beer or something one of these days. I can show you baby pictures.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

If Gretchen's only going to sing a little part here, then the guitars are the only reason why this segment should exist.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, Bono's hat and mawkishly awkward tributes to his father made me want to snap my copy of War in half.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

This performance makes me happy I left before Skynyrd at last year's Naperville Rib Fest.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's see how much random crap we can flash in the background in lieu of a confederate flag?

Jay Smooth (jsmooth995), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ricky Martin again!!!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

What happened to the actual awards?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. Oh God. That's Ricky Martin? The Ricky Martin I know doesn't have a double chin.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The actual awards were canceled in the face of massive redundancy.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, Bono's hat and mawkishly awkward tributes to his father made me want to snap my copy of War in half.

The music on War makes me want to ... oh never mind.

xppppRICKY MARTIN OMGWTDFLOOPQO!!!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

patience, baby, we've got alllll night (xpost)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ricky Martin I know has been out of the spotlight long enough to get a double chin and a gut.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that Skynyrd in the KFC ad?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Synergy.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Will.i.am playing God in Joan of Arcadia amounts to type-casting of a sort.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Iggy Pop just died and rolled over in his grave.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Ricky Martin has the saturnine expression of a man who thanks God he wasn't cool enough anymore to sing the J-Lo/Marc Anthony duet or the Skynard number.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Queen Latifah. Not a lesbian.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Few, I thought she was going to introduce Melissa Etheridge!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oscar nominee, Queen Latifah.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god, now we have to pretend that we give a shit about Latifah's new record? play "U.N.I.T.Y."!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

CBS presents Queen Latifah, singing "Contractual Obligation."

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ellen should be flayed alive for wearing that shirt. FATWA!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Are the Grammys usually so chock full o' non-music-related celebs? I mean, who invited Penolope Cruz for cryin' out loud?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be great if this queen was singing on a throne. And by that I mean a toilet.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, she's really bringing down the house! I wonder if she's living single! she could run a barbershop, too!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Tyra Banks...co-presenting...with Hoobastank...are they just pairing up names that rhyme now?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Tyra Banks. Because -- let's face it -- you don't really want to know what Hoobastank looks like.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Penelope Cruz is the last celebrity I'm upset about seeing prance around sexily.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye just got robbed, big time.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait to see how Kanye freaks out over this one.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

But then again, Best New Artist is usually a curse.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, kanye's gonna be fuming.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Maroon 5 are collectively sporting "wtf how did we beat Kanye West" faces.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

maroon dood just covered his ass. (don't hurt me, hammer!)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Past Best New Artist winners.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Maroon 5's album was released in June 2002. best new artist! of 2004!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

MAROON 5 GOT NEW ARTIST YES!!!!

FUCK A KANYE!!!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Pervert. Weirdo.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

If Kanye loves John Mayer, he must LOVE Maroon 5.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

this love has taken its toll.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

If he can't even win Best New Artist (where he was considered a shoo-in) then it can't bode well for Kanye. This probably means he'll get shut out the rest of the way.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye did a remix w/ Maroon 5, btw.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

keith's solo held its own with Dickey's, speaking metarosexually! xpost too little Gretchen, yeah. Ah wish the Guntotin' Nascar Jesus would from Conan O'Brien would come rolling in with Neil ("SHA"is His themesong yall know) Holy Roadkill! Maroon5!

don, Monday, 14 February 2005 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Old people and children are funny. But not as funny as walking M&Ms!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye already won at least one or two awards before the televised ceremony, so no shutout.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

OHMYGOD SURVIVOR MANTIT SHENANIGANS!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Billie Joe's drag name is "Liza Minnelli."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye already won at least one or two awards before the televised ceremony, so no shutout

Yeah, that's why I said "shutout the rest of the way" just in case.

He's up against Jay-Z for Best Rap Album, which is no sure thing. He might win that, but otherwise, I think the only time we'll see Kanye onstage will be during his musical performance.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like I say every year, the Grammys will only give big awards to rappers if they spend more time singing than rapping (lauryn, andre).

The Grammys treat rappers like the GOP treats homosexuals.. "we respect your preferences as long as you try your best not to act on them"

Jay Smooth (jsmooth995), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

When did Green Day become Kiss?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

that was kinda fun!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Cyndi Lauper giving Green Day the love.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex OTM.
At least Green Day sound the same every time. No surprises.

Star Hustler, Monday, 14 February 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Jill Scott robbed.

Star Hustler, Monday, 14 February 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

when did Kiss look or sound like Green Day just sounded and looked? (xp)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't you see the lasers shooting out of Billie Joe's eyes?

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I was told not to look him in the eye.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil Jon!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Did G-d just get his first shout-out of the evening? Respect!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

has anybody mentioned politics? at all?

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend just made the excellent suggestion that they should've cut to a shot of Gretchen Wilson in the audience during the lyric "I'm not a part of the redneck agenda"

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Billie Joe said that rock can be "dangerous." He would've said "political," but he was scared to.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone watch the simpsons tonite? it was weird. and funny! lotsa rap jokes.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

do you actually care whether anyone makes a political statement at the Grammys? what does it matter?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

anayway, um , is there gonna be a zeppelin tribute or something?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

KISS and Green Day are parallels.

KISS = sanitized for your protection
Green Day = sanitized for your protection

Gretchen is a redneck. She couldn't even dress up for her probably only Grammys. And that guy next to her has to be a redneck.

Star Hustler, Monday, 14 February 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Simpsons" funny? Was it a rerun?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't it a little friggin' late to put Fischerspooner's "Emerge" in a commercial?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

is gretchen wilson gonna sing the battle of evermore with kanye west?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

what does "sanitized for your protection" mean?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It means those musical acts put little paper banners on their foreheads.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Isn't it a little friggin' late to put Fischerspooner's "Emerge" in a commercial?"

technotronic and the spin doctors will be right here to answer that question in a minute.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

are there any popular music artists that aren't "sanitized for your protection"? are they all parallel?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

So you won't get pregnant from rock, Al.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you mean like Gene Simmons brand spermicide?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"Simpsons" funny? Was it a rerun?

No and no, Josh. Attempts to be funny using hip-hop stereotypes + awkward attempts to explain that they're wiser than hip-hop stereotypes = Eh.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds v. dud.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"sanitized for your protection" = spun, glossy, corporate, parent-hated? but not quite dangerous enough to do much harm, all about the money and reciprocity you scratch mine I'll scratch yours

OK they're not similar musically but Marilyn Manson isn't playing or nominated so Green Day will have to do.

Star Hustler, Monday, 14 February 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yo, don't be hatin', M.-dog!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

THE GRAMMY MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE RED STATES, PART TWO!!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

again, Star Hustler, what popular artists does that NOT describe?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

JE! SUS! WALKS!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye should thank Jesus for teaching him modesty.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, it's another soap opera segment!

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That was frankly embarrassing.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You make it sound like it's over.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't Jesus roll these days?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Kanye going to pop back out of the coffin?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye is the spazziest dancer outside of M.I.A. -- you don't highlight his dancing in silhouette!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHA

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Errghugh Gawd, what is with the interrupted songs?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno why y'all are acting shocked. this is a modest set piece compared to the video(s) for the song.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus, like Red Bull, gives you wings.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ice Cube was not impressed.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

He's got wings on AND they cut to Amy Grant and Vince Gill, oh my God, that's too perfect.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Kevin Bacon is Stewart Copeland.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Beauty Shop, Ludacris and Kevin Bacon" would be a great name for a movie.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh. Just watched Kanye West. Good fuckin' night.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

YEAH KANYE

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Moments! WOOOO!

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye thanked Rhymefest in his acceptance speech! now Byron Crawford can shut the fuck up!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Kanye just forget to thank God? Priceless!

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

do you actually care whether anyone makes a political statement at the Grammys? what does it matter?

While I'd undoubtedly be mocking hamfisted horseshit as well, I'm kind of unnerved that all the pageantry is so divorced from what's going on outside, especially if they're gonna give awards to American Idiot.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

def. the best acceptance speech.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

that was an AWESOME speech. Kanye rules.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye's speech was pretty cool there once it got going.

(Kanye thanked God)

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that was awesome: he managed total arrogance and near teary-eyed humility simultaneously.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

you just summed up his career, dude.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I must have missed it when I was having a different sort of Al Bundy moment.

*stretches out on couch, places hand back in pants *

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, forget about losing the Best New Artist category -- imagine what would happen if he forgot to thank God.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

God would strip him of his golden pipes out of spite

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I started out annoyed with him, but the line about "I guess they'll never know!" had me seriously ROFFLING

holy shit Ed Reed just laid out Michael Vick at the pro bowl, I hope James Blount wasn't watching that

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"No and no, Josh. Attempts to be funny using hip-hop stereotypes + awkward attempts to explain that they're wiser than hip-hop stereotypes = Eh."

no, there were some funny bits, but most had nothing to do with the rap stuff. it was just weird. like that one season where every episode was weird and surreal and people died and people were cruel for no reason. it was strange.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

God would strip him of his golden pipes out of spite.

Nah, he'd be reduced to making commercials for women's body wash...like LL just now.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a good gag about Milhouse and the frisbee, but I've already forgotten much of the rest.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Simpsons has been v. good at making me feel awkward for watching it.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Kris Kristofferson sounds like Levon Helm nowadays.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

And now, a word from the soul deprived.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a crush on Joss Stone.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

O SWEET FUCKING JESUS DIAMOND - TELL ME HE'S NOT HURT

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

And finally, FINALLY the industry found someone other than Melissa Etheridge to do the obligatory Janis tributes. (Uh, even if it's not great...and even if Melissa's still gonna be in the tribute anyway.)

Ooh. Ow. Ow. Ouch. Err...

"If Joss Stone had managed to sell any records in this country, we would have given her 18 Grammy nominations. But since she didn't, we'll throw her a bone and let her be part of a time filler tribute segment."

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, that takes guts, Melissa. I still hate your music, but hey: props. I wonder how her cancer treatment is going? Well, I guess.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

James -- nah, he got up; took a lick diving into the endzone, his helmet got ripped off, but he was alright.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder how her cancer treatment is going? Well, I guess.

And since I had no clue I was almost going to make a Paul Schaeffer joke.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Breast cancer, isn't it?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

That Janis tribute was boring.

Star Hustler, Monday, 14 February 2005 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

shock

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it's breast cancer.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Etheridge quoted on the red carpet, from news article I googled: "I feel good, I finished chemo last month, I'm out, my hair's growing back. I'm feeling fine."

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked the janis thing. they both sounded pretty cool to me.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

it was shocking when she came out all bald like that.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked it better than the kanye thing. the kanye thing depressed me. the janis thing was more uplifting.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

that was pretty awesome. melissa's growling balanced out joss' vocal olympics.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I hope she does well. She's alright but shouldn't Janis been tributed like twenty years ago?!?

Star Hustler, Monday, 14 February 2005 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

actually slayer performing south of heaven in it's entirety would be the most uplifting, but i take what i can get.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Billy Bob's hosed! Alcohol and downers I bet. God I hate Tim McGraw~

Star Hustler, Monday, 14 February 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Billy Bob Thornton took a pause at the beginning of his presentation speech that was downright presedential.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked the part on the simpsons where homer rummages thru marge's hair looking for the remote and finds a framed picture of lennie in there instead. and the mel gibson cartoon on the christian vegetable kidz network where they are whipping a tomato dressed like jesus and all the tomato pulp goes flying.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish they would have done "Light Is Faster Than Sound" for the Janis thing, but I'm persnickety like that.

so Tim makes the 2nd male wearing a cowboy hat to sing about his dead dad.

the mel gibson cartoon on the christian vegetable kidz network where they are whipping a tomato dressed like jesus and all the tomato pulp goes flying.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

miccio OTM. I have a sneaking suspicion that Jack White will be MJ's heir to the "ghoulish musician with a fondness for children" throne.

Matt Chesnut, Monday, 14 February 2005 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT!??!?!?!?!?! LIVEAID MEDLEY??!?!! ok you people better actually write down WHO IS SINGING WHAT. enough of this OMG OMG bullshit

USA Today says one can expect:

"A fundraising sing-along of The Beatles' Across the Universe, featuring Bono, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Norah Jones (news), Alicia Keys, McGraw and Velvet Revolver. Viewers can download the live track from iTunes for 99 cents; proceeds go to Asian tsunami relief."

Rob Thomas now... Please let me die

blawa (blawa), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Maroon 5 had more good singles than kanye

Thats sort of ridiculous.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that John Mayer with Steve Jordon on drums and Who/D'Angelo bassist Pino Pallodino?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye is way better than Maroon 5. He is a shit hot producer at the top of the hip hop world. Maroon 5 will be in Matchbox 20 limbo in two years.

Star Hustler, Monday, 14 February 2005 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Maroon 5 had more good singles than kanye

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

he seems like a pretty smart guy, why does he make music like this?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

um, john mayer, that is.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't Matchbox 20 still play arenas?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks like John Mayer is standing very close, and Presley is standing really far away.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

john mayer's favorite single of the year was by colin hay. which makes some sorta sense.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no idea about career longevity but I dig "This Love," "Harder To Breathe" and "She Will Be Loved." I dig "Workout Plan" and "All Falls Down," though not as much. And I'll take "U Saved Me" over "Jesus Walks" cuz its funnier (both are stupid).

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

That strat looked like it was ready to fall apart. You'd think he'd be able to find a late 60s early 70s strat in better shape with the money he does

blawa (blawa), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole Elvis thing was just an excuse for the show's producers to have Lisa-Marie on-screen.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

God the Grammys tonight have been AWFUL! These "Lifetime Achievement Awards" are such a joke. Fuck Loretta Lynn.

better than the one where Bono threatened to "continue to fuck up the mainstream?"

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda wish U2 had come up with some sort of costume scheme for this album. astronaut suits or something.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I honestly thought they weren't too bad. Was pretty cool to see Melissa Etheridge in good shape, and she sung her heart out. The Jaime Foxx ALicia Keys thing was alright. It was just aweseome to see Dickie Betts up there. THe opening number was a good idea. I could've gone without Queen Latifa though...

blawa (blawa), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The opening segment and the Gospel tributes were incoherent, and J.Lo was terrible, but overall, OK, fewer misteps than usual.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i even thought her queenyness was okay.

man i flipped by just to glance at the grammys and anthony lapaglia is on stage. that guy couldn't even get on stage at the golden globes! if anyone wants to know how far the music industry has sunk or how irrelevant it is to the culture at large, there's your sign.

do they pick Beatles songs out of a hat for these things?

yay john mayer!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

They sounded OK as a chorus, but when jumping from singer to singer, it was kinda brutal.

The funny thing was how everybody -- male and female -- looked as thought they were the same height on stage. Except for Brian Wilson, who was eight inches taller than everyone else.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

that all-star thing was just... fucking WEIRD. im d/ling it from itunes just because, well, just because.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

If Bill Clinton soloed in the chorus, even *I'D* download the track.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Usher channeling Timberlake channeling Jacko*!

*I'm not talking about Jack White

wow, Usher's backing band actually managed to make "Caught Up" sound good.

maroon 5 have 0 good singles

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

do you think old guys like James Brown ever get tired of being called on to appear with current artists as a symbolic gesture of “passing the baton” onto them? “What, this Usher guy is the new me now? Didn’t I just proclaim that Hammer guy the new me a few years ago?”

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

JOHN MAYER, YOU ARE MY CAUCASIAN!!!

As "Clarity" was the song of the year this makes a valid substitute.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't James Brown have cancer, too?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

There's something unsettling about seeing Usher totally outdance and outsing James Brown.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

What exactly is Lance and Sheryl's relationship with each other? Are they friends, or more, or what?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

A true "passing of the baton" would be Usher pistolwhipping Justin Timberlake while James Brown holds JT's arms behind his back.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

These "Lifetime Achievement Awards" are such a joke.

so wait a minute. it's 2005 and they've just gotten around to giving a lifetime achievement award to the carter family? and to jellyroll morton? and to jerry lee lewis? and to art blakey? and to led zeppelin?

have they never had lifetime achievement awards before? or have they managed to come up with 47 years worth of country acts who deserved the lifetime achievement before the carter family?

i think james brown probably forgets about those passing the baton events each year between getting arrested for driving somewhere he shouldn't be (i.e., the courtyard of a mall) in the spring, to smoking crack in his boxers and a bathrobe in his car on the side of the road in the fall. so i doubt he minds doing them much. if he really wanted to pass the baton on he'd have shown up to the bar i did karaoke at last night, where this guy actually did a better version of "I Feel Good" than JB ever did... and for the record, i love james brown.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't the tsunami happen, like, a month or two ago? Aren't we Americans supposed to be better at this forgetting about the rest of the world and moving on thing?

Smallpox? Global Warming?

Aaron A., Monday, 14 February 2005 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Worst vocal performances of the night go to Tim McGraw and everyone except for Alica Keys, Steven Tyler and Billy Joe Armstrong on the tsunami benefit song. I'd like to ask Tim how he feels about getting outsung by J.Lo (who had support problems as opposed to singing the entire fucking song sharp).

Overall, these are the best performances I've seen at the Grammys in years; it's like no one wanted to be the Ashlee of the Grammys.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

At this point I willing to give the best performance of the night to Green Day. Tells you how important having a good rhythm section is a rock band is.

blawa (blawa), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

weiland *was* pretty hilarious doing that Bowie/Lennon impression.

I was just thankful to hear an audible rise in the applause level when Elvin Jones's name flashed on the screen.

I'm actually kinda choking up thinking about how much joy Ray Charles brought to my life. Norah pretty much nailed it in her acceptance of their joint award. Bonnie sounded good.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Best performances of the night so far have been Green Day, Alicia Keys and Marc Anthony's half of the duet.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm thinking Kanye's going to be robbed. You don't get a lead-up like that Ray Charles tribute and not receive album of the year.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Your Record of the Year prediction is a slam-dunk. Ray might even take Album of the Year too.

There's nothing Grammy likes more than "comeback" records by legendary performers, except for "comeback" records by legendary performers who go on to get sick and/or die.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a nice gesture and all, but it's not gonna make up for the fact that, say, The First Family got album of the year instead of Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the first family is hilarious!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, I never 'got' The First Family...maybe you had to care more about the Kennedys than I ever did.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Green Day, love or hate, are a tight band. Kudos. Alicia Keys is a honey and she's a winner. Usher performed very well. Kanye too.

Tim McGraw and J-Lo sucked. But none sucked harder than the no downloading president guy.

Star Hustler, Monday, 14 February 2005 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't watch anywhere near the whole thing, but the most shocking moment of the night was how awful Tim McGraw was. I always assume, somehow, that the C&W game is so competitive that anybody at the top has a great voice by definition. Guess not.

Didn't stop me from singing along with the chorus as I always do, though: "I played two-point-seven seconds of a band named Fu Manchu..."

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, three things:

1) During Alicia Keys' performance, it wasn't clear that she had been crying, so it just look like she had a drool streak along the side of her mouth. It took me a good two minutes to realize it was a tear.

2) There are some striking similarities between Tim McGraw and Scott Stapp.

3) Did that dude say that anti-privacy website they advertised during last year's Grammys has "educated a half a million people" about the evils of illegal downloads? Doesn't it seem a little strange that something advertised during one of the biggest television events of the year couldn't draw a million visitors in a year when, according to Alexa, Fluxblog is pulling over 100,000 a week? And how many of those visitors did the Grammys' site actually educate? I imagine most people who visited were either journalists or people who went there to mock it.

U2 are the new Stevie Wonder, as far as awarding Grammys for every damned thing they do goes.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the "ain't even close" referred to justin's singing beating the pants off of usher's lack thereof, not to U2. (did dirty vegas win a grammy when they did their mitsubishi song? that one finished in pazz & jop, though not nearly as high as "vertigo" did -- and i agree, "vertigo" does seem to hold the record as the highest finishing pazz and jop single to finish there merely on the basis of having been an ad.)

E *is* an F, where I went to school. (Though I suppose I didn't hate his mustache, if he had one.) (Speaking of mustaches, I decided Jack White now looks like MICHAEL JACKSON CROSSED WITH KID ROCK. scary!!)

chuck, Monday, 14 February 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

In terms of simple vocal production, Usher has a cleaner, freer sound than Justin; both of them do a fair amount of pressing but Usher's sound is more resonant than Justin's.

In terms of vocal flexibility, they're probably about equal. Justin has a stronger falsetto but the aforementioned tightness gives it a really unpleasant, uncomplimentary edge.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck, I wish that I'd had you as a professor in college. Nobody gets less than a C unless they're with the RIAA?

I'm like you regarding John Mayer. I can't stand his music, but I do like him. He's one of the funniest interviews that I did last year -- really a clever, charismatic guy. I predict that Mayer winds up having a long-term career in this entertainment industry. Hell, he could take over for Jon Stewart if necessary.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

With the exception of "Yeah!" Usher has a complete and utter charisma bypass when it comes to vocals, though. There's just nothing charming or interesting there. I'm not speaking technically, of course.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

This is neither here nor there, but boy was the filthy beast of ROCK properly tamed last night, between Iggy's cheerful mug silkscreened across Ellen's torso, sometime Detroit pugilist Jack White showing up as a lovable wuss, and a cute purveyor of the punk music assuring us that rock can indeed, be dangerous AND FUN.

Of course, that's television for you.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

question: what was the minor crisis that u2 referred to in their acceptance speech? the one that would've prevented them from playing the show, and also "for the rest of the year"?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Usher's singing feels completely amorphous and characterless; Justin uses his falsetto (which I like, and which I hear way more beauty in) for hooks and rhythm - his singing is way more *playful* than Usher's. The only fun in Usher's music, near as I can tell, is in his dancing; otherwise, the guy seems completely fucking humorless (inasmuch as I've seen him; it's not like I've read any interviews with him or anything, so it's possible I'm wrong about that). He was definitely the least interesting element of his biggest hit, though; his vocal parts were like holding patterns, fillerbusters, empty running in place between Luda and Lil Jon and those nifty beats. After a couple listens, he totally wrecked the song for me, actually. But he *is an amazing fucking dancer; there's no denying that. The mute button on my remote control was invented for the guy.

chuck, Monday, 14 February 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

not to use commerical success as an arbiter of quality, but why do you think so many people clearly would rather hear Usher than Timberlake?

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

With the exception of "Yeah!" Usher has a complete and utter charisma bypass when it comes to vocals, though. There's just nothing charming or interesting there. I'm not speaking technically, of course.

I would disagree, particularly on "You Make Me Wanna", "My Way", "U Got It Bad", "U Don't Have To Call", "Yeah" and "Caught Up". Oftentimes Justin's idea of injecting charisma into a song revolves around bleating like a goat.

Justin uses his falsetto (which I like, and which I hear way more beauty in) for hooks and rhythm

I fear to ask what you think of opera singers.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck what usher have you heard? from what i can gather you're judging him primarily on his last album

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Justin sounds more like Michael Jackson when it was okay to like him =\= Justin is a better singer than Usher.

known vaginatarian (nickalicious), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I would actually put Usher a bit higher than JT because he seems to have a better grasp of dynamics and restraint.

Usher vs. Justin = the ultimate lose-lose argument.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

where are all these people who "clearly" prefer usher to justin, anthony? (i noticed that in your pazz & jop comments too, and it made no sense to me -- how many more million copies has usher sold? justin had more hits, didn't he? he definitely has over the course of his career, if not with his most recent album, and seems to me he *may* have had more off his most recent album. and if even if usher is out-selling him now, what the heck does that prove? what makes you think there aren't still lots of people out there that prefer justin? i don't get where anybody blatantly picked one of them *over* the other one. JT's album is older; of *course* more people are buying usher now. but either way, since when do sales prove anything?)

chuck, Monday, 14 February 2005 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh, I prefer Donny Osmond to Usher, too ("One Bad Apple" far and away the most immortal Michael Jackson rip in human history.)

chuck, Monday, 14 February 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they both suck heartily from a big gravy pipe of lameness, if it makes you feel any better.....though Timberlake edges out Usher thanks to the admittedly striking "Cry me a River".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i never said it proved anything. I just think its odd that infinitely superior solo debut of a white magazine cover star with astounding pipes sold 2 million copies over and had one top ten hit while this bland nobody sells 8 million in a year and has four number ones, three of the tracks being in the top five at the same time. i was just curious if you had any idea how such an injustice could be possible, especially since Timberlake's tracks were all over the place and got considerably more pre-release hype.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Even with my favoritest drummer in all rock history Fish Fisher (of FISHBONE 'fame') providing drum tracks for Timberlake songs, I still prefer Usher.

Since when did this become the ts: Usher vs. Justin Timberlake thread?

known vaginatarian (nickalicious), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not trying to prove JT is better than Usher by any means, I just think Usher is deeply dull. If everyone else thinks he's great that's fine with me.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

woops! two (and obv I'm only talking solo)

Cry Me A River hit no. 3
Rock Your Body hit no. 5

Senorita hit no. 27

album hit no.2

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck check yr billboards - usher outsold/outhit jt by a TON. he had the number one single for like 30% of this year, number one album for 10% of it. jt hasn't had a solo number one single or album YET, and if you wanna stack up usher career vs. jt/nsync career usher still comes out ahead. get a radio dude.

i have a radio, i just change the channel on usher songs. (and the riaa website has justified at 3 million, last time i checked; i'd be interested in seeing how their career totals compare, but i'm too lazy to check again myself.) but again, what does selling 8 million copies or having three number one songs demonstrate? since when do number one songs automatically not suck? nobody said it was a conspiracy; i just said timberlake is more fun. (i also think the gore gore girls are more fun than U2 or creed, and skye sweetnam is more fun than avril lavigne or ashanti. so shoot me, you know?)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as single to single goes I might actually prefer "Rock Your Body" to "Confessions, pt. 2." JT's number is absurd in a more likeable way.

Right the fuck on. Selling out is the most senseless concept in the universe. There's two things in this world: Money, and a big stick to stir it up and make more money. And if you deny it, you should get out of the business world, and become a monk. And music is the business world.

Anthony, I asked this way back in the first 300 posts of this thread but the subject of Usher/Justin didn't come back up again until later: you clearly have a problem with white rappers who may not have as much cred/talent/popularity as many black rappers, so what's your deal with white R&B singers? why do you keep harping on this Usher/Justin thing?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, that should be "you clearly DON'T have a problem with white rappers" etc

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I fully support harping on the Usher/Justin thing because many ILM posters treat Justin like some version of nu-Elvis.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not a cred thing, Al. I just think the treatment of JT and Usher by the media is noteworthy in its institutional racism and how it hasn't played out commercially.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This is never sexy when the look on the dude's face is that of Usher's.

dan. (dan.), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

(Which is fair enough, Usher is trading as much on a sex appeal image as he is on vocal talent and if you don't buy into that, that's 50% of what he's bringing to the table gone.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I think a lot of the relative critical reception to JT and Usher has to do with many factors besides race; producers, for instance. Justin hangs out with Pharrell and Timbaland, Usher hangs out with Jermaine Dupri.

I love how there is always this collective head scratching as to why less people watch the grammies every year and blame it on something like "Desparate Housewives".

WIVES' BEAT THE BANDS
Tue Feb 15, 4:24 AM ET

THE Grammy awards last Sunday drew its lowest total viewership since Tony Bennett (news) won for best album a decade ago.

The telecast drew 18.83 million viewers, according to preliminary figures released yesterday. That was the lowest figure in a decade and the second-lowest in the history of the Grammys (news - web sites) TV show.

The 1995 Grammys were a low-water mark for the music awards because it was a year without a strong contemporary musician. Instead the awards were dominated by old-timers like Bennett, Bonnie Raitt (news) and Eric Clapton (news).

Among the key 18- to 49-year-old age group, the audience was off by nearly one-third.

Sunday's show was marked by a batch of awards for the late Ray Charles, who posthumously won eight categories in all, including album of the year and record of the year.

The lack of a single, living artist with a large following dominating the awards — as, for instance, Alicia Keys has in the past — may be to blame. So was the competition from the runaway hit "Desperate Housewives."

The awards won the 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. prime-time hours relatively easily among total viewers.

But at 9 p.m., "Desperate Housewives" outdrew the Grammys by nearly 3 million viewers.

J (Jay), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't find Usher particularly sexy myself, but I really don't see how Usher and JT vary in this regard aside from pigment and poise. The relation between those two is a lot less than Usher and Fabio.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

a lot closer, I mean

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think JT is that sexy either. He looks kind of like he has the mange.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

and Usher's falsetto breaks in "Confessions, pt. 2" and "Burn" actually feel deft and emotionally gripping rather than awkward battiness like in "Like I Love You" (though frankly I'm not surprised that some critics prefer the batty), so when I say "poise" I'm referring to both vocally and physically.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

And I enjoy the battiness too. I've sung "Like I Love You" at karaoke cuz its fun as hell and a friend rapped the Clipse part as if it was Jad Fair on a PCP jag.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I just like the JT singles more than any Usher track - and I'm sure they'd be something different, maybe even better, if Usher sang them - since people keep saying his voice is technically superior.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly no one here has seen the Behind the Music where there's this great "OH NO HOW WILL WE MARKET USHER" moment. They've been sexing up his image as much as possible for years. Maybe that's why it seems so plastic and creepy to me.

I am also very disappointed that the Grammys had very little Lil Jon. Did they tie him down or something?

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

so why are you surprised that people find usher sexless, then, even though lots of other people don't? how does one contradict the other?

Because people use their personal opinion ("I don't find Usher sexy") to contradict observed data (when Usher drops trou and rubs himself, many people in the audience react in a manner that could best be described as an en masse shout of "YUM YUM GIMME SOME"). My position is not the one which is attempting to contradict observed results.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not saying that Usher doesn't do "Sexy" things, but I am saying that I don't think he really means it. I find it odd, and some others find it creepy. I mean, it's like Debbie Gibson in Playboy. I'm sure a lot of people will pleasure themselves to it, but that doesn't mean it's not odd/creepy.

This is not to say that Usher is actually sexless, it's just that his act doesn't seem like his own personal expression - I think he's more naturally maybe a crooner/soulman type. He seems like a really cool person and I'm sure hanging out with him would be fun (I think hanging with JT would be annoying).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)
